Welcome back.

Rules are simple: Votes are tallied every hour, with whatever course of action being the most popular being the course of action taken. Write ins are encouraged and non-mutually exclusive votes will be combined if possible.

When a roll is called for, roll a D100 unless otherwise specified.

For a short summary for the new and to recap:

You are Alex. A newly minted trainer and camping enthusiast just starting out on your journey at the age of Seventeen after your father lost his job in order to help pay the bills.

Last time, you woke up on an island after hitting your head on a submerged tree trunk and after making a rudimentary camp, you fell into a dream where you battled your long-time rival, Mike and met an old man who called himself Henry. In the morning, accompanied by Holly and Judy, you found Henry's cabin and caught Latias.

Now, you find yourself in a small campsite covered in deadwood and hemmed by blackberry bushes and heavy clouds threatening rain.

"Right, let's get to work." You say, starting on hauling some of the more substantial bits of deadwood into a pile out of the way.

The others join in shortly and soon enough, the space available to you is clear enough you could fit your tent, or two of the others in.

"I think I can see why nobody's been using this spot." Martha says, shaking her head at the blackberry bushes. "Trying to clear all this shit out would be a pain in the ass, without work gloves.

"You don't have any?" You ask, startled.

"Do you?" Martha asks, arching an eyebrow at you.

A quick check of your bag reveals that yes, actually, you do have a pair of sturdy gloves as part of your caving kit.

"What if we just used our fire types to burn up the blackberry?" Kathryn offers.

"That's insane." You reply, beating Fie to the punch.

"The bush isn't tinder dry, but it'll still burn without much encouragement." She says. "So, no."

"I could always get Salazzle to poison the blackberry." Jean notes.

"I dunno... Sludge Bomb is pretty indiscriminate." Fie says doubtfully.

"Don't sweat it." You say, pulling on your gloves, adjusting your coat and releasing Rusty.

He looks up at you, wide eyed and alert.

"Gimme a hand here, Rusty." You say, pulling out your survival knife and going to work clearing the brush. "Get in under these vines and use Metal Claw to dig them out." You say.

Rusty gives a nod and a growl, before squeezing into the thicket and starts ripping it up by the roots.

It's all you can do to pull what he uproots out and cut it up small.

Jean helps as best she can with the detritus, setting a fire going and piling it to dry out.

The bushes are also loaded with berries, which she's gingerly picked out and set aside for the time being.

Meanwhile, Gareth has dug your tent out and is endeavouring to get it set up, but he's not having much luck. Not surprising, considering it's nearly four times the size of his.

You've made a reasonable dent in the blackberry, enough for another tent to be set up in, but it's still going to be cramped and there's plenty more blackberry to be dealt with.

"Sure." He says, before digging out his own gloves.

It turns out, many hands do indeed make light work.

Between Rusty's efforts and Gareth's help, you very rapidly start making headway with regards to clearing out the blackberry.

Sage's help is useful as well, with regards to unsticking the more tangled and stubborn sections of blackberry, at least up until you hear a yelp and look around to see she's got a length of thorny vine stuck in her ears and she's doing the hot foot amongst some stray pieces that haven't been added to the fire yet.

>>5187744

You drop the clump of vines you were just pulling out and head over to Sage and delicately fish the vine out.

She calms down and lets you pick her up and examine her feet.

Fortunately she hasn't got any thorns stuck in her feet, but with how she's whimpering, you get the impression she has no desire to go anywhere near the blackberry again.

You pet her reassuringly, before depositing her next to Jean.

"You help Jean with the fire, okay?" You say.

Sage gives a yip in response as Jean gives you a thumbs up and continues stacking bits of blackberry vine on the fire.

You've made some real progress now with regards to clearing space:

There's enough space for your tent plus three of the others now and you've got a healthy supply of fire wood, but there's not much room to really move around in outside of that.

And you're starting to run out of blackberry to clear.

There're a couple of bottlebrushes past them, but that's starting to stray under the big gum trees.

Which, caming under those, isn't really a good idea, considering the size of some of the fallen branches you see further out into the underbrush. Particularly if the wind picks up like it did on your way to Newport.

Then, a drop of water hits your cheek and looking around, you can make out the first raindrops starting to fall as it starts to spit.

>That'll do, get another couple of tents up and settle in.
>Might as well clear out the rest of the blackberry. That's space for another tent, or a camp bathroom.

You sweep over the now cleared patches of blackberry and Jean gets Salazzle to poison them so it doesn't grow back, before you pitch a couple more tents as the rain starts to pick up in intensity.

After you're done, Martha rigs a tarp between the tents, so you've got some space to sit.

"Well, this isn't so bad." Jean says, stacking the fire higher. It's too early for dinner just yet, but getting a bed of coals going is going to make that much easier later.

"So... w-what do we do now?" Holly asks.

"We can't exactly train our pokemon or anything with how cramped it is, but now would be a good time to do any studying or planning." Judy says. "And you can still practice with your psychic abilities." She adds.

Holly nods and settles down to do just that, focusing intently on a small rock.

Well, you've got plenty of time to do stuff now, so you might as well get some talking in and you've got a few questions for Gareth specifically.

You catch his eye and jerk your chin towards your tent.

He nods and you both move away from where the girls are busy doing their own thing and into your tent.

"What's up?" He asks as you both make yourselves comfortable.

"Just wondering if you had any input on that whole dream sequence." You admit.

Gareth nods.

"I've got to admit, I'm jealous you got to meet Henry Williams like that." He admits. "Though, this Mike... was he the one who tried to hold us up at the junction to Route One?"

"Yeah, that was him. We've never gotten on." You confirm.

"Hm..." Gareth says, scratching his chin. "It's a little concerning he seems to be following us, like this then, but it's interesting that he be the one who you faced in that dream as well." Gareth says.

"How so?" You ask.

"He's somewhat... dull." Gareth explains.

"He has a tendency to annoy people, is an incorrigible bully and his default vocabulary is full of profanity." You note. "That's not a surprise."

"No, I mean his aura." Gareth explains. "Normally, people like you're describing have a tendency to have very aggressive and overbearing auras. His isn't. It's... faint. As if he's disconnected from it, a bit like those idiots in Team Green."

You blink, taken aback.

You're pretty sure if Mike met anyone in Team Green, he'd be just as likely to bend them into a pretzle and steal their wallets, but you have to wonder at what sort of correlation there is there.

"What's interesting about that is, Henry had you face him instead of someone else. We would've been more or less the same distance from you on that island and yet, he chose to pit you against Mike instead of me or Fie, or Jean." He explains. "So, there might be some sort of bond between you."

"Probably mutual dislike." You say.

"Possibly." Gareth agrees. "Still, we won't know for sure unless that sort of thing keeps happening." He says with a shrug.

"You enjoying the trip so far?" You ask after a beat.

Gareth nods.

"Yeah, it's been great so far." He confirms as you dig out the incubator to check on your egg.

It doesn't seem like much has changed since yesterday, but the egg is moving fairly regularly now.

"Getting to meet new people and travel with you and the others has been great." He adds, grinning.

"How're things going with Jean?" You ask.

Gareth freezes up at this and the expression on his face is comical, even as he starts to blush bright red.

"Um... alright." He says evasively. "How're things with Fie?" He asks.

You grin.

"Nice and cruisy." You reply. "You staying in her tent, or vice versa tonight?"

"Uh..." Gareth manages, blushing again, before all but bolting out of your tent.

You have to chuckle a little at his reaction as you put the egg back in your pack.

It's definitely getting close to hatching, it'll just be a question of whether it hatches on the road or here at the lake.

Looking at your watch, it's a little way past three o'clock. That's plenty of time before dinner and evening, it's just a question of what to do with the time.

You pull out your pokedex.

You completely blanked when Mike sent in Sneasel.

And while that's forgivable in the context of a dream, partiularly while you're concussed, it's not the first time you've seen a pokemon you don't immediately recognise on the trip so far.

You've seen more than your fair share come through the Greenshoot pokemon centre, but plugging the gaps in your knowledge now seems like a good idea.

That in mind, you start browsing your pokedex.

It turns out that there's a lot more pokemon that live in Arnet than you figured.

And a lot more variety, but considering how often it rains down here in the south-east, you're surprised at the abundance of fire-types everywhere.

It's one thing to know Arnet is classified as semi arid, but it's another to see it, you guess.

There also seems to be a lot of Legendary sightings, both around the lakes and mountains, but also around the islands to the south.

They tend to be blurry, but around Mount Reflection in particular, there's a lot of videos and photos, along with old accounts of a Rayquaza calling the mountain home.

There's also the enduring mystery of how Lake Audacity never seems to lose water, even though it's in the middle of a region that by all rights should be deep desert and the only river that leads into it is dry half the time.

After about an hour, you put your pokedex aside and blink to try and refocus your vision.

You feel sure you can recognise any pokemon from Arnet now and most you could reasonably expect to see on the road.

You sit up and stretch. That was a nice rest, but you kind of want to do something else now and you feel like you can't possibly cram anything else into your brain right now.

You get up and go outside to walk around a bit.

Just a short break, then you'll start getting an overview of the gym leaders. Yeah.

The others are mostly occupied with their own study or pokemon, barring Gareth and Jean, who're having a hushed conversation as you go around the edge of the camp, flicking the odd piece of missed blackberry vine into the bush, before you go back into your tent, where Fie is just now rolling out her sleeping bag.

"Hey, just taking a break?" She asks.

You nod.

"Can't sit around studying all afternoon." You reply.

Fie nods.

"That's true enough." She says, flopping down on her sleeping bag. "Still, the rain's not going to be letting up any time between now and tomorrow morning, so not a lot else to do. Unless you want to give everyone a heart attack again." She adds lightly.

"Two concussions are more than enough for one week." You reply, pulling out your sleeping bag to join her.

You sit in companionable silence for a while, before a thought occurs to you.

"So, your dad gets protective where boys are involved, huh?" You ask.

Fie shrugs.

"Protective is the wrong way to characterise it. Selective might be a better way to think of it." She replies.

"Selective?" You ask.

"He doesn't want me hooking up with a trainer, he wants me to marry a 'working man'." Fie replies, rolling her eyes. "He thinks the reason me and my brother don't have 'real jobs' is because we got into pokemon training." She explains.

Fie nods.

"He is." She confirms. "His justification is, he's worked hard, he deserves a hobby." She adds drily.

You stare.

You're pretty sure if your mother heard that, she'd beat about ten different kinds of shit out of him.

"Arceus..." You say, shaking your head. "It's one thing to worry about having money, but it's another entirely to go around dictating people's lives like that."

Fie nods.

"Yeah, that's why I took so well to martial arts." She says. "He respects anyone who can beat him in a fight, which precludes most Gym challengers, so... I might have spent an appreciable fraction of my journey practicing specifically so I could kick his ass." She admits.

"Yeah. It can get hectic sometimes, but it's not quite as hestic as you hear about." She says. "That 'three losses' thing? It's actually a yearly percentile. And that aside, it's really satisfying helping people get their start." She adds.

"Yeah, about that. Your brother's gym business and Ethan's bug catching, are those one-offs or do all the leaders have side-challenges?" You ask curiously.

"Everyone's got their own thing." Fie confirms. "It could just be a bit of fun, or it could be practical. Or both." She says. "Daniel makes people do a fitness set. Dad either makes people spar with him or one of his pokemon. And I vary it up a bit, depending on how wet behind the ears a given challenger is." She adds.

"How so?" You ask.

Fie waves a hand airily.

"Oh you know. Make sure kids know fire safety, first aid, that sort of thing." She says, then gives you a wry smile. "You're kind of a pain in the ass in that regard, because you really know your shit." She says.

"Thanks." You reply, feeling rather elated at the complement.

"Still don't know what I'll throw at you, but I do try and make it a learning experience." She adds.

"Do you know what any of the other gyms do?" You ask curiously.

"I do." Fie confirms, then raises a hand. "I'm not going to ruin the surprise for you though. That's half the fun. You can ask people on the road or look up everyone's bios, but getting insider information off me is kind of cheating." She adds, forestalling the obvious follow up. "I'm only excluding my brother and father from that because you know Daniel and dad... well..."

"He's a prick?" You suggest.

"Well yeah, but I've also got a stake in you kicking his ass." She adds. "You're a pretty good fighter, but you might want to try picking up another style to supplement it." She suggests. "Dad's is just full-out aggression. A lot of holds, locks and punches, he's not likely to give you the space for some of those fancier kicks."

That does sound like it'd be a pain to deal with, but you have some practice with countering holds. Not a lot, but some.

You nod all the same, since it sounds interesting regardless.

"What did you guys used to do that you drank enough to have stories like that?" You ask, startled.

You figured Fie and her friends for a lot more responsible than that.

"Poor decision making." Fie replies. "Games of truth or dare that went out of control, mostly."

"Better question, why did you have alcohol in the first place? You would've been what? Fourteen?"

Fie fidgets.

"It was supposed to be for cooking." She explains. "But... you know how it is. Stupid kids doing stupid things." She adds.

"I guess I can understand that." You concede.

"How about you? Any standout stories?"

"Oh, yeah." Youy say, nodding. "There's a pack of wild Houndour and Houndoom in the foothills of the Divide." You begin. "I would've been about twelve. So, I've gone off camping with dad and his Arcanine for the weekend and he's setting up camp when I go for a walk and come across one of their pups."

"Oh, Arceus..." Fie says, looking apprehensive, like she's expecting this to be another near miss disaster.

"So, me not knowing any better, I start playing fetch with it and just start attracting more and more of the pack, who think it's great fun." You explain. "So, I keep throwing sticks and they keep bringing them back for about an hour before dad and Arcanine come looking for me, at which point they scatter. I didn't really think anything of it until we got back home and mum blew up and grounded me for a month for putting myself in so much danger."

"Yeah, I'm kind of with your mother there, but I've got to admit, that is pretty damn impressive." Fie admits. "Especially considering that photo of Martha's." She adds. "...Actually, that Eevee of yours, how'd you meet him?" She asks as the thought occurs to her.

"Found him poking around an old machine shop looking for food." You reply with a modest shrug. "Why?"

"...Huh." Fie says, looking actually incredulous now. "Eevee are really, really skittish." She explains. "And... yeah, I can actually believe you did that, after that rainstorm." She admits. "Actually, was that the first time you've been attacked by a wild pokemon?"

"You'd remember." Fie says seriously. "I mean, you're still looking around to see where that Rufflet is." She notes.

She's got you there, you have to admit.

"Well, what's the significance?" You ask.

"I'm not sure, it's just super weird." Fie admits. "Still, it sounds like a bit of a gift. Maybe it'll develop as you muck about with aura?" She says, then shrugs.

"Maybe."

"You didn't actualy tell one of your stories." You note.

"Huh. I didn't." Fie admits. "Well, all the ones involving Judy involve her getting drunk and winding up in one of our tents accidentally, usually buck naked.
It kind of stopped being funny after the second time." She adds. "And I told you about how I became a trainer and nearly died because I was a dumb twelve year old..." She sighs and shakes her head. "That story of yours kind of blows the majority of mine out of the water." She admits.

"Hey, this isn't a competition." You note.

"True..." She admits. "Still, there was that time I tried climbing Mount Aspiration in search of an Alolan Vulpix." She says. "Kind of the reason I hate caves."

"What happened?" You ask.

"I nearly froze to death." Fie says frankly. "If it weren't for Cinder and my then-Carkoal, I probably would've." She adds with a grimace. "I got about halfway up and got lost in the cave network." She explains. "The crazy part is, I woke up back at the roadhouse at the base a couple days later. There's just a mental gap there for two days." She adds.

"That's... huh." You say.

That is kind of crazy.

"I mean, Mount Aspiration is full of Psychic pokemon, so it could've just been then, but even so, it still weirds me out." She says. "Worst part is, Alolan Vulpix aren't found on Mount Aspiration." She says. "They're mostly found along Route 9, between Ferrisville City and Springreach Town."

"Ouch."

"Yeah, not my proudest moment." Fie admits.

"And you give me shit for my misadventures." You say, without any real sting.

"I've been there, done the stupid shit and lived to tell people not to do it." Fie says with dignity. "Just because you know what you're doing, don't go getting complacent." She advises.

"Alright, alright." You say, waiving her off.

"So, anything I ought to know about your brother?" You ask.

"What do you know about him?" Fie asks in reply.

"...Pretty easy going." You say as you think on the owner of the local Gym. "I genuinely didn't realise that he was a Gym Leader, he runs the place as a general fitness centre." You admit. "He always struck me as just a pretty cool guy who was really into fitness and personal development."

Fie nods.

"Yeah, that's Daniel." She confirms. "He's the one who suggested I ought to make my challenge about preparedness, fire safety and knowing just what the hell you're doing. Three guesses what his is about." She adds.

"Fitness, diet and the importance of warm up stretches?"

"Close. Last one's the importance of not overdoing it." Fie corrects. "And in case you're wondering, no, he's not about to give you a hard time over me." She adds. "Hell, he's more likely to call me and tell me not to scare you off." She adds.

"Hah. Well, no danger of that." You assure.

Fie fidgets and blushes a little at that, but doesn't say anything.

It seems like Fie's back on form today, because she's giving you a real workout.

This is just what you needed: It's not no-holds-barred, but Fie is a really, really good fighter-

Your line of thought is cut short however as you slip on the wet leaves. It then terminates in shock and pain as the kick Fie just through misses your thigh and instead lands square in your groin.

You give a yelp and roll around in the dirt, trying not to swear or groan too much as you're wracked by pain.

You're dimly aware of Fie releasing Cinder and being carried back to your tent and her getting your towel and looking very contrite and embarrassed all the while.

You can see Fie pretending not to watch, but she's clearly enjoying the view.

You're just about to start putting on dry clothes when the tent flap opens and Kathryn pokes her head in.

"Everything- Oh." Kathryn says, blinking.

"Uh..."

"I'll just leave you guys to it." She says.

Now alone, you quickly finish changing, before going out yourself.

"...And you're sure you weren't-" Kathryn says, then blushes as she catches sight of you.

"We weren't fooling around." You assure.

You're still goddamn sore, but that's beside the point.

"But why were you in there then?" She asks Fie. "While he was changing."

"Art appreciation." Fie admits, shamelessly. "Speaking of changing, think I will as well." She adds, before ducking into your tent.

"I didn't get kicked in the balls for sympathy, if that's what you're suggesting." You say with dignity. "And I know I look like a walking disaster storm, but I'm more like a trouble lightning rod." You add.

"So you didn't fall over on purpose?" Kathryn asks.

"No, I slipped. If it had've been on purpose, it would've been way more controlled." You say. "Also, not somewhere I was clearing of blackberry not even an hour ago." You add.

Thefire's got a nice bed of coals going now, so after knocking and getting a 'come in' from Fie, you retrieve your cooking utensils and your food and start preparing dinner.

It's a bit of an eclectic mess of ingredients that everyone provides, but the core ingredients you have to work with are sausages and beans.

Adding in the dried vegetables everyone else provides, you quickly manage to throw together some 'bullshit stew', as the Junior Ranger Leader who ran your local group called it.

You don'thave that much in the way of spices or whatnot to work with, but soon enough, everyone else is eyeing the bubbling pot as you put some potatoes on to boil and prepare a damper.

"How did you get so good at cooking like this?" Holly asks, mystified as she watches you work.

"A lot of practice." You reply modestly.

"I'd have thought you'd need at least a table to work with." She admits, sounding embarrassed.

"It'd be nice, but it's not a hard requirement." You assure. "I mean, if I were feeling lazy, I just could've put some canned beans in the pot, but that's hardly going to feed everyone." You add reasonably.

"Eh, depends how many cans you put onto cook." Martha chips in from across the fire. "Still, I'm not about to complain about having someone in the group who can cook worth a damn." She says.

"Wait, I thought Kathryn could cook." You say as Holly looks just as surprised as you.

"No, Kathryn likes cooking." Kathryn corrects as the girl in question fidgets. "She's banned from cooking group meals unless she's got supervision." She elaborates.

"Huh." You say intelligently. That's kind of interesting, considering where you got that impression.

Shortly thereafter, you've got nothing to do again as you set the timer for the stew and look around the camp:

It's stopped raining for the moment, but there's no telling when it'll start again.

Jean and Gareth are meditating by the flap to her tent, while Martha and Kathryn seem to be having a cutthroat round of some game on their phones while Judy reads something absently on hers.

Holly is looking around with an attitude of uncertainty, while just in the door to your tent, Fie is sat grooming her Flareon.

Looking over at Fie reminds you: You've got a grooming kit as well.

And this is the first good opportunity you've had to actually give your pokemon some treatment.

"Hey, I brought a grooming kit back in Newport." You say to Holly. "And it looks like you've taken good care of Checkers. You mind showing me how to make the most of it?" You ask.

"Oh, uh... I guess?" She says taken off-guard by the question.

You nod before going and retrieving your kit and laying it out.

"Oh, it's a beginner's kit..." Holly says. "It's pretty basic, but that's the whole point." She adds, before releasing Checkers and starting on brushing him. "Every pokemon's different, but you need a firm hand to get any shed fur out..." She begins, frowning as though recalling lectures she's received on the subject.

You listen closely and do as she says as you watch her with Checkers.

Sage squirms and yelps a little at the beginning, but she soon settles down as you find a pressure she seems to like and lets you brush her with nary a complaint from then on as you work the dead fur and some minor tangles out of her fur.

"You're good at this." Holly says as she moves onto Cotton, who seems to be a very patient Swablu with how he sits through Holly going through the manual in the beginners kit for handling feathers.

"Thanks." You say as Sage, evidently feeling that you've done enough, jumps up and goes and sits by the fire, the picture of contentment.

You hold up a finger, then go and grab the container of poke treats and shake a few out for Rufflet.

He tilts his head, regarding them and you before hopping over and starting on eating as you start brushing the dirt out from his feathers along with some tiny mites you see on his feathers, frowning as you try and get them all.

They must be unbearably itchy.

Looking in the basics kit, you find some powder that, after a quick glance at the label, confirms that it'll kill the mights.

Once you're done brushing Rufflet down, you cover him in the powder. He shakes and squawks, but afterward, he definitely seems to be relieved as he flutters back up to his perch and settles in.

"Right, that's not a bad idea." Holly admits. "Can I have that powder?" She asks.

You hand it over and watch as she treats Swablu as you move on to Rusty and start polishing his carapace, much to his evident delight.

You briefly wonder what sort of mites he might have to deal with then quickly move on to other subjects, because the thought of tiny little insects capable of chewing through his metallic hide is absolutely terrifying.

You just hope it's your imagination.

Nope, you've got to know now.

A quick search in your pokedex later reveals that yes, Aron actually do get infested with little metal-eating parasites and the infestations can get pretty severe.

The entry also notes that the Aron line tend to combat this by wallowing in dust or mud and that they've been known to let bird pokemon to peck at them to get at the mites.

Aside from those pests, the only real issue that Aron have is with iron deficiency leading to a weak and brittle carapace leaving them vulnerable to predators that would otherwise steer clear of them.

There's also a footnote that this latter malady is a common problem among Aron in the hands of inexperienced trainers who aren't as informed about their charges' diets as they should be.

You make a mental note to see if you can't get Aron some scrap iron or something in Silveridge then refocus on polishing him, pausing after you're done to give the stew a stir before moving onto the rest of your team.

You chat a little with Holly while you work and learn that aside from Checkers, she doesn't actually know that much about pokemon.

Which, if that dream-version of her father is any indication, is further evidence he's a shitbag, in your view.

It's not long before you've finished grooming everyone, barring Latias, who for the sake of yours and everyone elses space, you decide to let be for the time being.

You even give the egg a polish before putting the incubator back in your tent for the time being.

You're no expert, but you think there's a good chance it should hatch within the next day or so, with how it moved under your hands.

The sun's setting in earnest now and the rain's coming down again.

Martha and Judy are hanging up electric lamps so you've got some proper light and everyone's just waiting for the stew to cook at this stage.

"It's going to need at least another hour." You reply. "Still, it's starting to get late. How about that game?" You ask.

There's some discussion at this, before the consensus comes back in the affirmative.

"Gareth." You say after a moment's thought.

"Yes?" He asks.

"Truth or Dare?"

"Uh... truth?" He asks cautiously.

You have to think for a second now, but it's no real surprise he went with truth, all things considered.

"Have your aura abilities ever landed you in any trouble?" You ask eventually.

"...Yes." Gareth says after a moment, very cautiously.

To his immediate right, Jean blushes, though that might just be the fire. It's nice and hot now.

"Care to elaborate?" Martha asks, grinning. "Can't just leave things there." She notes.

"I... er... gave someone the wrong impression." He says awkwardly. "This was years ago, mind. I was young and didn't know any better." He adds hastily.

He looks distinctly uncomfortable.

"Alright. Fair enough." You say, nodding. "Your turn." You say, indicating to him.

"Alex. Truth or-"

"Nope. No back and forth." Martha says, holding up a hand.

"Alright, then... Judy." He says after a moment. "Truth or Dare?"

"Dare." Judy says, with no hesitation.

"Um... I dare you to..." He stops, clearly thinking.

"Take your time." Judy says.

"I dare you to do twenty push-ups in the rain." Gareth says at last, looking like he's had a stroke of inspiration.

"Aw. Alright." Judy sighs, before going out into the rain, assuming the position and, to her credit, doing just that, even though she has to stop and give her arms a break twice in the process, before brushing herself off and coming to sit down again, dripping wet and flushed with exertion. "Okay. Holly." She says.

"Y-yes?" Holly squeaks.

"Truth or Dare~" Judy sing songs.

"Um... D-dare." Holly says.

You wince in sympathy. She's going to be doing a lot of dares tonight, you don't doubt.

"I dare you... to kiss one of the boys." Judy says impishly.

Holly blanches.

"Wait, what-?" Gareth manages before Holly gets a determined look in her eyes, rounds the fire and kisses you full on the mouth.

Holly swallows.

"Dare." You say.

There's not much in the way of truth that would be that interesting anyway.

"One sec..." Jean says, before disappearing into one of the other tents before re-emerging wearing a glove and holding a bright red berry with squat spikes you recognise as a Tamato Berry.

You take the Tamato Berry and bite into it before Jean can say anything.

She stares as your mouth turns into an apocalyptic inferno of-

Arceus above, why did you do this? Hot damn, that's spicy.

All told, you manage to keep it together as your eyes tear up, you start to visibly sweat and turn as red as the berry you're holding as you chew.

"Damn. These do have a kick to them." You note, blinking away tears before cutting up the rest and adding it to the stew before washing your hands.

"Well. That's going to warm us up." Fie says while Jean continues to stare at you.

She clearly was expecting you to have a much more intense reaction to trying to eat a berry that's ninety percent capsaicin.

"Right then, my turn again." You say, clapping your hand.

You kind of wish you hadn't just did what you did, since you could've dared Judy to eat one, but it is pretty nippy, so everyone's probably going to appreciate the warming effect when the stew's properly cooked.

"Judy." You say.

"Yeeees~?" She asks, leaning forward.

"Truth or Dare."

"Dare."

Apparently, she's as willing to take it as dish it out, which isn't really a surprise, you suppose, considering what Fie said she's like.

"I dare you to kiss one of the other girls." You say.

"Don't threaten me with a good time." She says, before turning to her immediate left and all but pouncing on Martha, who flails as she's pushed down as Judy proceeds to do exactly as you say and then some until Martha physically lifts her off.

An effort that takes more effort than you'd have thought necessarily, except Judy apparently was clining to her like a limpet.

"Please don't encourage her." Martha says, shooting you a filthy look as she keeps Judy from resuming where she left off.

"My turn." Judy notes, prompting Martha to release her.

"Martha, Truth or Dare." Judy says.

"Truth." Martha says instantly. "And if you ask when the last time I got off was, Judy, I'll throw you into the lake." She warns.

"Aw. Okay then, do you have a crush on Alex?" She asks.

"No." Martha replies bluntly, before turning to you. "I respect you, but you're a bit too wet behind the ears for my taste." She says.

Huh. Well that's a thing.

"Alright, Fie, Truth or Dare?" Martha asks directly afterward.

"Dare." Fie replies.

"I dare you to go jump in the lake." Martha says.

"Arceus, give me a hard one, why don't you?" Fie says, rolling her eyes and walking off into the dark, followed by Cinder a moment later with a towel as she releases one of her team which uses either Flash or Sunny Day to give her some light as she crosses to the lake shore, wades out up to her knees, then bombs into the water.

A moment later, there's the sound of splashing as she surfaces, intermingled with a stream of profanity, as she walks out, before being bundled up by Cinder who promptly returns her, soping wet to the fire.

"Arceus, Martha d'you have any idea how cold it is in there?" Fie demands.

"Hm. Must be pretty cold to get that many emphatic 'fucks' out of you." Martha admits.

"Yeah, no shit." Fie grumbles. "Alex, Truth or Dare?" She asks once she's a little more composed.

"Gareth." You say, making him jump.

"Er... Dare." He says, pre-empting you.

"Okay, I dare you to confes how you feel to Jean." You say.

It's pretty clear to you that they're crushing hard on each other, but they seem to be dancing around each other.

As if to confirm your suspicion, they both gape at you and blush bright red.

"E-er... um... uh, Jean?" He stammers out, looking rather like he's about to faint. "I... I, er... I really, um... like you..." He manages awkwardly.

Opposite you, Kathryn gives you a thumbs up and a wink as Jean fidgets.

"Yeah, I... I like you too." Jean admits, before there's an awkward pause. "It's your turn." She prompts, apparently deciding to deflect instead of delving further into that, though they do seem to be subtly gravitating together as Gareth thinks.

"Kathryn." He says. "Truth or dare?"

She's a big, solid young woman, but laid out on your stomach like this, you have no trouble comfortably supporting her.

"Huh. You're actually kind of comfy." Kathryn says, looking down at you as Fie giggles at the sight of the pair of you.

"Don't mention it." You reply. "At least make it more challenging next time, Gareth." You add as he gives the stew a stir in your stead.

"Anyway, I guess it's my turn now." Kathryn says, looking around at the others. "Hm... Holly." She says.

"Um... Dare, again." Holly replies and you hear a rustle as she presumably puts her pokedex down.

"I dare you to do situps until it's your turn again." Kathryn replies.

Holly nods before laying back and starting.

"Judy..." Holly says as she completes her first and lowers herself back down again.

You've got a really awkward angle, so you can't see her around Kathryn's knee, but it sounds like she's doing pretty well.

"Truth." Judy says, instantly.

"Out of everyone here..." Holly says. "Who would you like to date the most?" She asks.

That sounds like a question straight off some list, but you suppose it's as valid a means of coming up with questions and dares as any.

"Hm. Who I'd like to date the most?" Judy says, sounding actually genuinely thoughtful. "For a serious answer, I guess Alex?" She says, sounding unsure. "Gareth has his thing and everyone else has their own deals, but Alex doesn't seem to have much going on." She explains. "Just for a date though, probably have to go for you though, Holly." She adds, earning a strangled noise from her in between her light breathing as she presumably keeps on with the push-ups.

"Speaking of Alex..." Judy says, with an air of teasing. "Truth or dare?"

You feel a degree of smug satisfaction at this.

Of course, you've not met Fie's father yet, but you feel confident you can at least make an impression if it comes to it.

"Um... Fie...?" Holly asks, breathlessly.

Apparently, she's still making good on her dare.

"Right. Holly, truth or dare?" Fie asks after a beat.

"Dare." Holly replies.

"You are just a glutton for punishment." Fie comments. "Alright, I'll give you an easy one. I dare you to sit next to Kathryn." She says.

Fortunately, next to Kathryn, she doesn't weigh much, but you're going to need a break soon.

"Exactly how lewd is this one you're tripping over yourself?" You ask.

"Um..." She manages. "S-skinny dipping. With..." She trails off.

"That's insane." Fie says. "It's *freezing* out there." She adds.

"Who's he got to go for a swim with?" Judy asks, leaning in.

"Um..." Holly says, fidgeting as the rain continues to patter down on the tarp overhead. "M-me." She says.

"Anyway, dinner's ready. How about we call time and eat?" You suggest.

"Probably for the best." Martha agrees.

Kathryn stands and stretches, followed by Holly, who hesitates, before handing you a bowl of stew and potato along with some of the damper before sitting down next to you.

"Sorry." She says, chancing a look your way.

"I... I know." She says, nodding. "But like Fie said, it's fun teasing you with how unflappable you are." She replies.

"And what if I'd said okay?"

She fidgets.

"Well... I guess we'd have gone for a swim." She says, studying her bowl intently.

"Don't let the other girls rope you into everything they can get away with. One too many pranks among friends can make things go sour." You note, deciding to caution her now. "Judy doesn't seem to know when to leave well enough alone. She likes making people squirm too much."

She nods.

"I know." She says. "But... I wanted to," She admits. "I thought'd be like that dream." She adds, looking at you

There's something in that look you can't quite place. She's not pouting, or scowling, but there's something there, but you're not quite sure what.

"D'you want to talk about it after dinner?" You ask.

"I guess." She replies.

It's not long before you've finished dinner and Martha starts washing up, at which time, you give Holly a nudge and nod to your tent.

Fie sees you go and gives you a smile and a thumbs up, before you go in and indicate for Holly to sit down.

"Alright, it's just us." You say, making yourself comfortable on your sleeping bag.

She takes a deep breath, then lets it out slowly.

"Okay. So, um... you know that dream the other night?" She asks.

"How could I forget?" You ask rhetorically.

"Well, um... I've been feeling... less scared since you um, shattered that thing." She says awkwardly. "Judy's Gardevoir said it was a representation of um..." She trails off, then shakes her head. "Of my fear of my father." She fidgets. "Apparently, what you did amounted to, er... psychic spring-cleaning. And I've been feeling more confident and less afraid since." She explains.

"You don't owe me anything for that." You say. "I couldn't just stand by and let that thing throw you around." You note. "Besides, it could've turned on the rest of us."

She shakes her head.

"It wouldn't have." She says, with certainty. "Still..." She fidgets. "I've... um... been having other dreams since..." She says, now starting to blush. "Nicer ones..."

You nod and indicate for her to continue.

"Well, that's good to hear." You say. You can hazard a guess as to the nature of them, but you're sure if you press her, Holly is going to clam up faster than you can blink.

"Um... y-you um... feature in them..." She mumbles fidgeting as she fiddles with the hem of her dress.

"Is that so?" You say.

She nods, visibly pink now, even in the dim light coming through the tent door.

"I um..." She squirms. "I r-really like y-you." She manages, flushing bright red now.

Well, that's about what you expected, the only question now is how you're going to deal with this. This is a lot heavier and more fraught than you were anticipating and you get the feeling you could make an absolute mess of things if you say the wrong thing, one way or another.

"Um..." You say, fighting back panic. "Can- can I put a pin in this conversation for a minute?" You ask weakly.

She hesitates, then nods.

"Sure."

You nod gratefully, before ducking out of the tent and hurry over to Fie.

"There a problem?" Fie asks quietly.

You quickly relay what Holly said to you to her.

"What am I supposed to do?" You ask. "She's smitten. And I don't want to hurt her, but-"

"Okay, calm down." Fie advises. "Don't just slam the door on her." She says. "I don't know how bad she's got it, but the safest bet will be to ease her off." She advises. "It sounds to me like, like it or not, you're who she's looking to for safety and stability. You're her rock. And her knight in shining armour." She adds. "Set some boundaries and give her time."

"Set some boundaries and give her time." You repeat, sounding at least a little skeptical.

"Hey, I'm not a psychic or a shrink." Fie defends. "What Holly needs is a therapist. In the absence of one, someone with their shit together to help her along." She adds, before poking you in the chest. "That means you."

"Alright." You say, nodding. You've got to admit, this talk's been reassuring. Even if Fie hasn't provided you an out, she's given you a course of action.

At the very least, her she's given you some perspective that you were chronically short on.

Fie gives you a thumbs up.

"Just keep your clothes on." She says lightly as you stand and head back into your tent where Holly is perched with an attitude of anxiety.

That's a little more blunt than you were expecting, but you suppose it just goes to show how much she trusts you that she actually admitted that to your face.

She's still bright red and she looks just about ready to bolt, obviously waiting for you to say something, though you're not making any effort to hide your surprise at her admission, so she's got some idea at least.

You're actually not that tired, all things considered.

You quickly relocate your things to Martha's tent and get set up, before, after some thought, you release Latias.

It's a testament to the fact that Latias is indeed young that she fits with enough room left over for you to move freely.

She coos and looks around before settling down when she sees the entrance and lets you scratch behind her ears.

You're once again left in wonder at just how soft and fine her downy feathers are.

"How about some light reading?" You suggest.

You receive a friendly bump and a coo in affirmation, before Latias settles.

You pull out your pokedex and quickly search up the entry on Latias to read.

It's understandably short and rather dry, focusing on the known biology and ecology of Latias and Latios, the scant little that's known of their abilities and areas where they're frequently sighted. There's no real cultural notes or legends in the bio, but Latias listens raptly the whole time.

Apparently, she likes storytime.

This is borne out when you go to stop and she gives you a disappointed coo and puppy-dog eyes.

"Okay, one more." You say, before flicking to one of your previous saved tabs, this one happening to be Cutiefly.

When you finish this entry, which takes much longer, simply due to how much more is known about Cutiefly due to how common and widespread they are in comparison to Latias and Latios, Latias does the same thing again, evidently thinking that you'll do whatever she wants, so long as she begs.

Unfortunately, she's right.

You just can't say no to puppy dog eyes, so you find another random entry and start reading.

This time, the subject is Bidoof.

Unsurprisingly, this entry is absolutely massive. You've barely made a dent by the time the tent flap opens to admit Holly and you're on the verge of falling asleep.

Latias, in contrast, doesn't seem to mind in the slightest and is listening with rapt attention.

"You were reading with her?" Holly asks.

"Yeah, just about Latias and Latios at first, but apparently she liked it, so we wound up doing a few more entries." You explain.

"Aw, that's sweet." Holly says.

"Yeah, anyway, I'll give you some privacy." You say, before stepping out of the tent so she can change.

You really need a drink, anyway, and the billy is still hot.

Everyone else seems to have decided it's time to call it as well. You guess you were reading longer than you expected.

After you've had your drink, Holly steps out to give you some privacy before you settle down to sleep.

"Please don't try hugging me while I sleep." You say with your eyes closed.

"I'll try not to." Holly promises. "You are very huggable." She adds, the sound of rustling polyester informing you that she's squirming with embarrassment.

Moderation is the moral of this story. You're just going to have to get over that pesky weakness for Baby-Doll Eyes.

The scene shifts to you and Latias reading, both of you happy and healthy.

The scene fades into an indistinct kaleidoscope again before resolving again. This time, it looks like the night club you went to.

And it's on fire again, except you're sat at your table equidistant between Holly and Fie while you talk and in the background two monstrous men, one wearing an expensive suit and the other a stained hi-vis vest and overalls have an epic fistfight, adding to the carnage.

Huh. They do both have degrees of father-figure issues, don't they?

They're both commiserating and occasionally shooting you fond looks when they think the other isn't looking.

You give neutral answers when addressed to avoid offending either of them, but you feel discontented.

Finally, Fie gives you a poke in the ribs.

"So, we having that threeway?" She asks drily.

>Okay, this is just stupid.
>This isn't right. You're *with* Fie. You're just looking out for Holly.

This isn't right. You're with Fie.

You're looking out for Holly since it's the right way to go.

You shake your head and waive the question aside.

The scene dissolves again into a pleasant haze.

You just put that down to being tired.

The scene resolves again on Holly, except now, she's sat pensively on the edge of a bed in a well-appointed room,

This looks familiar.

She looks up.

"Well..." Holly says. "N-no, not quite." She says uncomfortably, before the door opens and the same grotesque parody of a business man from last time storms in, except this time, significantly less massive.

"Go take a chill pill. Or do a line or something." You say derisively as you walk to the door, showing absolutely no regard or fear of the man in the door. The apparition steps back, ostensibly to give you room as you take hold of the door yourself. "If you actually want to protect your daughter and not control her, this isn't the way." You add.

"Don't you talk-" The apparition begins, before you slam the door in its face, apparently actually hitting it in the face by the sound of the thud, followed shortly afterward by the sound of a body hitting the floor.

You sigh and turn back to Holly after a moment as the door doesn't burst back open immediately to an enraged business man and go sit beside her again...

At which point the door bursts open again.

"What have I told you about bringing strangers here, Sophie?" The apparition shouts. "Especially boys?"

"Holy crap, did this actually happen or is this a phobia of yours?" You ask incredulously.

"Ph-phobia." Holly replies. "F-father didn't like me having friends outside of the girls' school I went to." She says. "He didn't like me talking to boys on the bus either, so he started getting the chauffeur to drive me and pick me up. I was never allowed to go anywhere unchaperoned..." She sniffs. "The last week or so... it's the most freedom I've ever had." She confesses. "And you're the first boy I've ever gotten to know." She adds. "And I know you're with Fie but..."

You go close the door again, then wedge a chair under the handle, before returning to sit by Holly as she valiantly tries to maintain her composure as the walls close in around the both of you, before she's crying, great heaving sobs as her brave face shatters like glass and the classically rich bedroom turns to a stereotypically dank, stone dungeon and chains form around her wrists and ankles.

You blink awake as your alarm goes off.

You yawn and sit up to see Holly doing likewise, before crawling out of the tent to give her some privacy after killing your alarm.

Nobody else seems to be up yet and considering that the rain is pattering down on the tarp still as you kindle the fire again and put some more water on to boil, you can't really say you blame them.

Looking at the forecast on your pokedex, it looks like the weather should break around mid morning.

You're up, so there's no sense in trying to sleep in now.

Once Holly comes out, you go and get changed, then pour a hot drink before working on breakfast, which, soon enough has Gareth and the girls poking their heads out and shortly thereafter, joining you for breakfast.

If there's one thing that can be said for cooking for a camp this size, you've got options.

Between sausages, eggs, bacon and beans and for some off reason, chips, you're probably eating better than a lot of trainers do on the road.

"In what world are chips a breakfast food, Judy?" Fie asks, shaking her head as she accepts her plate.

"Well, hashbrowns are." Judy defends as everyone else digs in.

Fie looks like she wants to argue, but clearly, she can't think of how to.

"Why not do pancakes one morning?" Holly suggests.

"I mean, we could, but they're a lot more hassle to do properly." You reply. "I'd argue the chips were as well, but..." you trail off. Somehow, Judy made frying them over an open fire look easy.

She just grins modestly.

"It's supposed to rain until about nine or ten." She says. "Anyone want to play-"

"No." Everyone choruses.

"Aw." She says, looking put out.

That does beg the question what you're going to do, though.

"Huh. Yeah, I had a dream kind of like that as well..." Fie says. "I guess Holly pulling us in would explain that." She adds thoughtfully.

You clear your throat.

"How'd your girls night go?" You ask.

"Yeah, really well." Fie says, nodding. "It was nice to catch up properly." She adds. "Thanks for letting us use your tent."

"Don't mention it." You say with a shrug.

"Holly should stop pulling people into her dreams as she starts getting a better handle on her powers." Fie says, apparently guessing what's on your mind. "And in the meantime, it seems like you're having a positive influence on her, so don't go tying yourself in knots over it." She adds.

You nod. You were a little worried about what Fie thought of that.

Fie lets you go there and after some thought and a little study, you decide that the best way to spend the morning will be to teach Sage Telekinesis.

It's a move that requires a lot of concentration, but according to to the pokedex, she should be evolving soon, so you think she's up to the task.

When you release her outside and outline what you want her to do, she frowns at a nearby branch before destroying it with a Psybeam accidentally.

You reassure her thats okay okay when she looks back at you apprehensively, before urging her to try again.

The same thing keeps happening though, until, as the rain starts to lighten off, she manifests a shroud of psychic energy around a small branch, though she doesn't manage much more than that.

Still, it's a good start.

She yaps and leans into your pats as you congratulate her on a good effort.

You pack up shortly afterwards and set off again, even though it's still drizzling.

Your coat's dry now at least, so you're in no danger of winding up soaked.

This should be the last day of this hike and you're all eager to get back on the road again. It's been good fun, but all good things have to end eventually and there's more to be seen on the road.

You check the forecast as you walk.

The forecast is that this break should last until lunch time, we should get you all the way to the actually good campsite marked on the trail.

The image shows that the campsite actually has a sheltered eating area as well, so you should be able to wait out the rain there, though frustratingly, you'll only have time to make it back to the lakeside camping ground before the sun sets by the time the rain breaks, which leaves you with a choice:

You can spend the night at the camping ground again, or you can start towards Silveridge tonight and try find a campsite on the road.

The problem is, the forecast is for patchy showers for the next couple of days, so there's no telling how much progress you'll make.

You suppose that's just life as a trainer.

You won't get anywhere stopping at every inconvenience, so you guess you'll just keep pressing on and start out for Silveridge tonight.

"Kind of hard to guess what the weather is going to do today." You note.

"Yeah, this time of year is kind of a pain in the ass for travelling." Martha agrees. "You've got two choices with it if you're a trainer: suck it up and walk or take public transport."

"Well, I guess we'd better start out for Silveridge tonight." You say.

"That's reasonable." Fie agrees. "We're probably not reaching the roadhouse, but we should be able to find a place to camp." She adds.

"Um..." Holly says from her spot next to Kathryn, then hesistates. "N-nevermind..." She says.

"Just say the word when you get tired, Holly." Fie says without missing a beat. "I'll get Cinder to carry you."

"A lot of people type cast me since I'm specialise in fire types. It's always funny to see them do a double-take when I say I swim for a hobby." She adds.

"I'll bet." You reply, grinning yourself at the thought. "You have a favourite pokemon?" You ask.

Rufflet seems to be spooking the ones here: There're a lot of Taillow chattering and flitting about as he follows you.

"Thundershock." You say and Volta obligingly launches a bolt at the branch.

Unfortunately, instead of hitting Sobble, she hits the branch it's sitting on, sheering it off and sending Sobble and the branch both crashing into the brush.

"...Good job, Volta." You say after the initial surprise at seeing the branch drop subsides, before you head into the brush to see if you can't find that Sobble.

As luck would have it, it's just shaking off its own shock at having abruptly fallen along with its perch as you push into the brush and looks thoroughly disoriented.

While Sobble is recovering, you underarm a ball at it.

It promptly disappears before the ball rocks, once, twice, a third time, then clicks shut and vanishes.

You'd have liked a Mudkip more, but Sobble aren't seen very often.

And the option of trading Sobble for another pokemon aside, you could always give it to Tom instead.

He's got to be wanting a pokemon of his own pretty badly now, after you gave Chloe Vulpix.

And even if they do start battling one another, you've got every confidence of that being a fairly even match, even if Tom has type-advantage. Chloe's got a knack for fighting dirty.

All told, you're feeling pretty good about about that.

"Great job, Volta." You say, ruffling her mane and earning a purr from her in response as you pick your way back to the path in time to see Holly toss a ball of her own at a battered Feebas.

You watch with bated breath along with the others as the ball rocks, then rocks again and again, before... *click*.

"I did it!" Holly cheers, fist pumping and jumping for joy.

"Awesome job Holly," Fie says, giving her a pat on the back as Gareth claps politely as she retrieves that matte black ball and she congratulates cotton on a job well done.

Gareth meanwhile, looks like he's debating catching a Feebas himself.

Sobble for Tom is good enough.
Maybe we can get him to join a sharpshooter club like how we did ranger school or kapoeira.

Nope, you've got to leave something for Chloe to do herself when she goes on her own journey.

You can tell her when and where to look if she really wants a Feebas for herself.

Unsurprisingly, it doesn't take Gareth long to land a Feebas of his own and you're off again.

"Even if this doesn't work out, I can always trade Feebas to someone else who'll take care of him." Gareth reasons. "What're you going to do with that Sobble?" He asks.

"I'm thinking I might give him to my brother, since I gave Vulpix to my sister." You reply.

Gareth nods.

"That's a reasonable idea." He agrees. "Neither feels left out and they both get a good friend and reliable partner."

"Pretty much." You confirm.

"I guess that explains why you're not nervous about that egg hatching." Gareth says. "You're used to caring for your brother and sister, so there's not much different with caring for a baby pokemon."

"It'll either hatch today or tomorrow." You reply.

"In that case, I should be able to." Gareth confirms. "But do you really want to ruin the surprise?"

"I don't mind." You reply. "Besides, if you check, I can make preparations with food and whatnot, or get advice from Kathryn."

"That's a fair point." Gareth says. "Alright, when we stop for lunch, I'll check. Provided it's not hatched, anyway."

With this point settled, you press onward, making good time to the picnic ground, which you arrive at shortly before lunch, giving you time to set stuff cooking on the gas barbeque under the shelter before you join Gareth who is meditating with the egg.

"Okay, I think I've got a good idea of what pokemon this egg contains." Gareth says. "I guess the girls really wanted to go all in on their 'helping new trainers' thing, because unless I'm mistaken, this is Riolu egg." He says. "And she's awake."

You sit, stunned, for a full five seconds as you process that information.

You're not exactly a pokemon expert, but Riolu and Lucario have a certain reputation that precedes them. And if you remember correctly, there's an imbalance of the sexes with females being far less common than males.

"No, I wouldn't want to intrude." Gareth replies. "I might do some training."

"One of these days, we'll meet in the middle." You reply.

Gareth chuckles.

"Yeah, one of these days." He agrees, before going off to train.

With that, you settle yourself on the ground, close your eyes and focus on your breathing.

It's hard to focus.

You're nervous and excited, but you do your best to calm yourself down and focus.

It seems like this is a bit of a lost cause though. You're restless and you're keen to get back on the road again.

When Holly calls lunch, you don't do much more than blink your eyes open, as if you'd just been having a rest.

Lunch itself is a simple affair, just sausages and bread. No one seems to be too fussed about anything elaborate right now.

As you're eating, you listen attentively as Kathryn outlines exactly how to take care of your soon-to-be hatched Riolu.

Predictably, they're a lot of work but only for a few days, at which point it, or you guess she, will be able to look after herself as well as the rest of your team.

"You got all that?" Kathryn asks.

"Yeah, that's pretty straightforward." You admit.

"Just call me if you've got any questions." Kathryn says, before giving you her number to register in your pokedex.

You finish lunch and clean up in short order before you're off again.

It doesn't look like it's going to rain again just yet and you make the most of it, to the point where you're approaching the camp grounds by mid afternoon, which is a phenomenal effort, all things considered.

It's a lot emptier now than it was when you arrived and you're tempted to call it a day now, but nobody looks like they want to stop, so instead you keep going and soon, you're back on Route 2, headed northward. You're probably not going to make the campsite marked on your map, much less the roadhouse, but it feels good to be back on the road again, even if it looks like it's going to pour again tonight.

You're about an hour up the road from the lake when the first fat, heavy drop of water splats against the ground next to you and another bullets off the back of your head.

The others quickly pull out wet weather gear, as it starts to drizzle, but the drops are heavy enough to clue you in that this is going to be a pretty intense storm.

>Push on for the marked campsite.
>The best bet would be to make for the roadhouse. It'll take all night, but you're not finding a campsite that'll be remotely comfortable anyway.

"We push on." You assert. "Even if it floods, a campsite wouldn't be marked on the map if it wasn't good enough for most weather."

"...Yeah, he's right." Fie confirms, checking her pokedex. "It's on the side of a hill just off the road, so it's fairly sheltered and it's not going to flood unless the rain comes down a lot worse than is forecast." She adds.

"Sounds good." Martha says, as she sets off again, which is enough to get everyone else moving.

"How're you so confident, speaking up and taking charge like that?" Holly asks, increasing her pace a little to walk alongside you.

"I was a junior rangers patrol leader." You reply. "So, I got some practice at it." You add modestly.

"Oh." She blinks. "That sounds like it must've been fun."

"It was a lot of fun." You say seriously as everyone focuses on walking as the drizzle starts to become full blown rain.

Soon enough, you're all fishing torches out as it starts to get dark and even with all your wet weather gear, the sheer volume of rain means you all eventually wind up at the very least damp, until at last, you see through the rain the sign indicating the camp sight just off to your right.

You all quickly hurry up the track around the side of the hill until you reach the partially sheltered flat ground.

There's a shelter with a park bench in it, along with a firepit which you quickly stack and get lit, before some further exploration reveals a small woodshed.

You quickly get your tent set up and get the tarp rigged up again,, before the order of the day becomes 'change into something dry'.

There's no debate as to sleeping arrangements tonight:

Everyone's wet, everyone's cold and everyone's tired.

About all that's keeping anyone up right now is the promise of a nice, hot meal.

Even Rufflet's come in under the shelter with you and is huddled as close to the barrel that serves as a firepit as he can get without getting in the way.

All told, you decide the best you can do is help with the food.

"You got any more Tamato Berries, Jean?" You ask tiredly as you start helping cut stuff up for the stew.

"Yeah, one sec..." She says, before digging one out of her pack.

You thank her and quickly add it to the stew.

Kathryn passes you a hot chocolate as everyone else settles down which you accept gratefully.

It does wonders to warm you up.

You're tempted to try doing some capoeira practice and see if you can't meditate through doing so, but there just isn't enough room, unless you go out in the dark, wind and rain again.

No one really talks much or does much of anything until the stew smells like it's done.

You prepare some formula for when Riolu hatches with Kathryn's help, but aside from that, not a lot happens.

you bolt yours down quickly and despite how much stew is in the pot, soon enough, it's empty.

In the aftermath, you settle down and find yourself with Sage sat on your lap and your team huddling around you. space around Fie and Cinder seems to be at a premium with everyone wanting to stay as close as they can to her Fire-types for the ambient warmth.

You're damn lucky to have Sage. She's absolutely perfect as a living hot water bottle right now.

You drift back to the thought of meditating and settle down to try again. It's easier now you're worn out and everyone's preparing for bed.

Breathe in, breathe out...

...

No, if you don't try meditating while you practice now, you never will.

With an effort of will, you shift Sage over to Holly's lap and tell her to be good as you go to a relatively clear patch of ground on the edge of the covered area. It's still relatively dry here and you're not going to hit anyone or anything unless they actively try sneaking up on you and start practicing as you control your breathing.

It's cramped, it's cold, it's dark and you're exhausted.

Needless to say, these aren't ideal circumstances to try and practice or mediatate but you persist and soon enough, despite your doubts and misgivings, you start to hit your stride and you start to see and feel the auras of everyone present.

And coming from your tent, you can see a steady one, focused in the egg, about the only one that's not dim from exhaustion right now.

You get the sense that it's focused on you as you spin and kick, faster and faster, until you come out of a low sweep to a gasp from Gareth.

You pause, panting lightly and turn to him quizacally.

"What?" You asked.

"I think... no, nevermind, I must've been imagining things." He says, waving you off. "Were you just doing combat meditation?" He asks.

"I guess?" You reply. "I find it's easy to relax once I start getting into practicing." You add.

"Well, it suits you." Gareth says. "Your aura was steady and bright. A bit like when you were practicing Dragon Dance, except you had it under control." He explains. "I just thought for a minute you actually pulled off an aura strike." He adds.

"How would I know if I did?" You ask.

"It can be hard to tell." Gareth admits. "They've really got to be powerful to actually be visible, but if you had've hit something, it would've been fairly easy to tell, because you would've put a pretty noticeable dent in it, even as an absolute novice." He says.

"Well, we're all tired and worn out." You note. "Maybe it was your imagination playing tricks on you?"

"Maybe." Gareth says. "I guess we won't know unless you practice and meditate more."

You nod, before you and Gareth both go in and get changed for bed before letting the girls go in and do likewise.

It's cramped in the extreme inside your tent with eight people and a couple of pokemon, but it's warm.

There's no talk as everyone just focuses on resting up. Even Judy seems too worn out to go stirring up trouble. You hope that trend continues in the morning.

Soon enough, you're nodding off yourself.
