In a far off, wild, and unruly land- there is a mountain known to be cursed. Most reasonable folks steer far clear. Only a single small town exists nearby- and the locals themselves tell tales of the mountain. Once a prosperous mining town, the tunnels below were abandoned as things came up to meet the diggers. The danger soon outpaced the riches, and then things began to stalk the countryside. Since then, they have stayed within their walls and resigned themselves to irrelevance to the wider world and simple living off the land.

But for some; this place is an opportunity.

There are those who dare to delve such places. The desperate, brave, or foolhardy enough to go into dark and abandoned places to find treasure. Dungeons which house dangerous monsters, traps, and ancient curses- but too grand treasure and sometimes even magic.

This is such a place, and these are such a people. You will go... Beneath the Moaning Mountain!

Your adventuring band begins with a grand total of... two. The first is Jonathon of Blackwater. Skilled with a lockpick and quick on his feet- he is a capable man, though with no wealth or weapons to his name. The second is Elly, the milkmaid. While not a lady of high breeding, she is trained in woman's work- the art of magic of the home. She has delivered babies and bound up wounds of soldiers- though she has seen scant action herself.

The two arrived in the small mountain town of Shovestone. Once a huge town, it has shrunk down since the olden days. The abandoned houses no longer stand at least, for fear of creating knockers and other creatures of the night, but even so it feels strangely lonesome even at the market or within the dimly lit tavern.

The first night, Jonathon awakens to a haunting sound. From far away, sounding as though just over the nearest hill, was the sound of a quiet and painful moaning- the voice was impossible to gauge, but it sounded like a human being in pain or loss. While he felt the urge to flee this place as soon as he was able, he suppressed it. There was rumor of beneath that mountain- and it would be the only way for him to pay his debt.

“Elly, did you hear that noise last night!?”
“No Jon, I stuffed my ears with cotton!”
“...You are much more clever then me. I should have known- with a name like the “Moaning Mountain”- that I'd have trouble sleeping...”
“Hehe, the locals say you get used to it.”
“Get used to that!? I think not!”
“Well, tomorrow night, I'll boil you some lavender tea. It always does well for the frights...”

While your small adventuring team has promise- there was an element missing. The villagers warn against traveling to the mountain, as most who go do not return. Even worse, they claim a tribe of orcs live up there now, making travel even more dangerous. The simple truth was- you did not have the means to defend yourself. Jonathon was a strong enough man, but had no skill with a sword.

“Hail, barkeeper! I heard there was one here who sought fortune and glory in the mines above!”
“Pfft- You mean actually going up there, to the Mountain? Surely you jest.”
”No, I do not.”
“Well, I suppose you aren't the first to go up there...and the few that have returned have brought me treasures and riches. But remember this; only few return. If you're sure, there is a sellsword here. He's just over on that side of the tavern- right there.”

With a point, the barkeeper directed Jonathon to the mysterious stranger, but getting closer he found nobody. Curiously, he was a great sword unattended by a very large shell- like the one a snail would wear. Suddenly, it unfurled and up came a big, slimy mass beneath.

”Woah! You're not a human!”

The creature nodded its head. Then, it made a motion with its fingers, slowly but surely, conveying some kind of message. Elly had joined Jonathon at this point, and he looked to her with a silent plea. She shook her head; she did not understand this finger language.

“I suppose slugs can't talk.”

Suddenly, the large snail looked taken aback. It put its hands on its hips, looking down at Jonathon with an intense expression, filling up his view with its size. Elly put her hand on Jonathon's side.

“Jon... I do not know much about the 'pode people, but calling one a slug is a grave insult. It means one without a shell to them; which is a great mark of shame. It is the same as calling a human an outcast or a beggar. You should apologize and we should hire it to come with us!"

Attempting to hire him right after an insult is too fast a mod whiplash. Just say for now that we're sorry for the unintended insult; perhaps buy him an apology beer with a few spare coins? But save most of the money for team equipment.

Jonathon decides not to hire the snail man- but he will apologize for the misunderstanding. The snail man makes a wiping motion with his hand and seems to brighten up, as if to clear away the bad air between them.

“Jonathon... why didn't you hire him?”
”Because we can't communicate with him anyway. Too dangerous to take along. Besides, the man is a cutthroat. Once we find any treasure in the dungeon, he may just overpower you and I and take whatever we found and leave us for dead.”
“The same could be said of anyone else we bring along!”
”Yeah, but with this money we can equip ourselves better. I like our chances.”

Jonathon and Elly take the last of the coin they had left and used to it purchase some much needed equipment. The local smith isn't exactly an armorer or weapon-master by trade, but can still sell Jonathon a sword and a coat-of-plates; a decent enough piece of armor. For Elly, she buys a new pack and visits the local herbalist to buy a collection of rarer herbs, including some smelling salts. Along with this, the pair bring a decent amount of food, torches, and sacks to carry their ill-gotten gains.

Then, in the morning, they begin their climb up the mountain.

About halfway up the mountain, Jonathon and Elly stop to break their fast and talk.

“Jonathon, aren't you curious at all as why I wanted to come with you?”
”Hmm, not especially. I figured you were going to be arranged to wed a man you did not care for, so you ran away at first opportunity. The “treasure hunting” was just a good excuse.”
“...Nothing was arranged for me, but is that the real reason you weren't curious? Or was there another?”
”You women always do this. I'm not gonna be led into a trap, like a lamb to the slaughter!”
“Aww, come on! It's not like that.”
”I'm onto you! You're trying to bait me into saying something bad. You made it very clear from our first meeting that you weren't interested in me, and just wanted to be traveling companions because you wouldn't feel safe on the road alone. So no, if you will make me answer, I did not take you for a whore. A whore would be much more forward. Besides, I've never seen a whore as pretty as you.”
“Gaah! You weasel You're going to get away with it! You're as quick with your words as you are with your hands around a sack of coins!”
”...We'd better get moving. I don't want to be up here after it gets dark. Before sundown would be the best, I know orcs don't like sunlight so they'll probably come out at dusk...”

Soon after, the pair encounter someone unexpected on the road. Ahead of them is a dark young boy, who is calling out in an almost sing-song voice.

“Brother~? Brother! Where are you~!”
”Ho! Young lad, what are you doing up on the mountain, this far from the village!?”

The youth turns and falls silent as he encounters the strange adults. Elly leans in to Jon's ear and whispers to him.

“Look at that outfit! I've never seen something like that before. Plus it's so dark! Black-dyed cloth is really expensive...”
”Young lad, are you alright? It's not safe on this cursed mountain, especially alone.”
”I'm not alone! My brother is... around here somewhere. He'll come back to guide me to the village. I know he will.”

Jonathon looks at Elly with a worried expression. She seems worried too.

”Do you know which way to the village, lad?”
”Yes, this way!” The young man points towards the mountain's peak; clear opposite direction from Shovestone. That's the only village for days worth of travel. You shake your head.
”No son, it's this way.”

The kid shrugs, and in a carefree voice- ”Guess I'm lost then!”

You can't leave this kid out here. You may be a bunch of get-rich-quick scheming adventurers now instead of proper members of society, but you still won't cross the line of abandoning a child somewhere. You can tell Elly wants to help him a lot more then you do though. At least she can convince him to come with you back to the village.

”Come on now, little one. It's not safe here.”
“But- But what about my brother? He was supposed to come get me.”
“Don't worry, we'll come back and find him once you're safe with your mommy. What is your brother's name?”
”...I'm not supposed to talk to outsiders. Nobody is supposed to know our names of anyone in my village.”
“Okay, what is the name of your village then?”
”...It's the only village here. The Elders get really mad if you say its name too. It's bad luck.”
“...Well, can you at least tell me what your brother looks like?”
”...He's like me, but, uhh, taller.”
“Ahh, so he's the big brother?”
”....Mhmm.”

The child nods. After that, he doesn't talk much. He's really quiet. You don't like this long detour that burns daylight- plus you'll have to make the hike back up the mountain again, but still, you feel like this kid's parents are probably the headman of the village and his wife. You're pretty sure that necklace around his neck is made of gold. You're expecting a reward for helping their boy back!

But when you return to the village, the boy slips away from Elly for a second and then is gone. He disappears among the straw huts and vanishes. You spend another hour asking residents of the small village, someone HAS to know whose kid this is, but none say anything.

”Dammit! They probably knew we'd expect a reward and are keeping the kid inside and pretending like we didn't help at all. We're just “outsiders” to them...”
“...Jonathon, you shouldn't say such bad things. That will make your breath go bad and your teeth rot out of your mouth.”
”Psch. Sorry, Elly, I'm just frustrated. I hate to leave something like this unresolved...”
>>
But as you are about to make your way back up the mountain to salvage this so-far disastrous trip to the dungeon; you are stopped by another strange character. He's a man, perhaps a bit older then Jonathon, wearing patchy clothes and a cloth cap. He also has a spear in hand.

“Ho! I hear you're the ones going up the mountain. I will come with you!”
”...Who are you exactly?”
“Well, my real name is Richard. But people in the town just call me Patches.”
”Well, “Patches”, why exactly would you want to join us? You do know how dangerous it is up in the mountains, right? After all, you live here.”
“...Ahh, come on! I've lived here my whole life. Nobody has ever been brave enough to go into the mines in generations; it closed so many years ago. But there is treasure down there, people can come back rich! I won't be a burden on you. I've got my daddy's boar-spear and my own homemade armor, plus I can carry a lot of stuff!”

Jonathon is skeptical. More people means more ways to split the loot; but as a gentle country yokel, he seems trustworthy enough. Plus Elly puts a hand on your shoulder and gently whispers,

“...you always did say you wanted someone slower then you just in case we have to run for our lives. He looks a bit fat, don't you think?” She giggles.

You're pretty sure Elly doesn't really mean that...but given your rather sparse party at the moment another set of eyes and a hand to hold a weapon would be really useful. Plus, he probably knows the local area pretty well. You decide to bring him along.

Finally, you arrive at the main entrance to the mines. The mines have been abandoned for a long time- so long that even the boards that once held it shut have fallen away. Or perhaps been torn off by other things.

This is your first time being in a dark place beneath the earth like this- a dungeon. True darkness and danger. You have torches and a stick of charcoal to help mark your way; but it is still a frightful thing to enter a place like this on your own volition. Just one more thing needs to be determined...

You've decided to put Patches up in front with his spear, with Jon behind him. Naturally, Elly will come up last- as she is an unarmed woman. She can also hold the torch.

"Be careful not to drop it either. If that goes out while we're in darkness, we'll all be lost."
"Stop making me so nervous! I might just drop it out of nerves at this rate!"

Finally, your adventuring band has entered the dungeon for the first time. The dark maw swallows you as you enter seeking fortune.

Level 1 - The Mines

As your group walks on- the sound of the outside world, the birds, and the wind fades as the sound of silence fills your ears. The mines are dusty and very dark- but at least set in straight corridors mined out by human hands. Here and there, the ceiling buckles under the weight of the mountain above, and the passages curve as they seek the richest veins in the body of the mountain.

Then, you begin to hear noises. Small taps that sound like scratching on the window. The sound of a rock falling, and then footsteps. Scratching on wood, and a animal shuffling.

"Eep! Jon, I'm scared!"
"Shhh! It's only noise. Richard, ready your spear in case we meet the one responsible..."

The noise gets louder until you turn a corner and finally see the culprits- Knockers!

Just as you suspected. These creatures appear in old houses and abandoned mills, in dark attics, and in caves and holes beneath the sides of roads, and under rickety old bridges. They make noises at night to scare people away- as they feed off dust and cobwebs and would starve if someone cleaned up the places where they live. They are basically a grown up kind of gremlin- so weak even a child could scare one away.

”Haha- merely a few knockers! They'll be of no threat to us. Just wave your stick at them, they'll run.”
”Err... Jon... I don't think these ones are going to scare off....”

Your confidence evaporates as the monsters advance towards you. You can honestly say you've never seen this before; but then again, in the most darkest and abandoned of places Knockers can become more aggressive. You've never heard of one killing a person but... sometimes people come back with scratches they can't explain from a dark room or place, or trip and fall and hurt themselves. You guess Knockers can be aggressive some times. But there's no more time for speculation as the Knockers attack!

COMBAT RULES
Roll a d20 in one category for one character. Each character can attack and defend in combat. Characters without an attack roll don't attack, and characters without a defend roll have no defense and are considered surprised or frozen in place. Characters inflict damage and take damage based on their physical ability, equipment, and positioning as arbitrated by the QM. For example, in this combat, Elly is in the back position and has no weapon except for a torch, so attack rolls may be largely unnecessary for her. Jon has decent armor and these enemies lack dangerous weapons, so a defense roll may not be necessary for him either, and so on.

With this system, it may be best to keep a mid or low roll for a character and focus on attempting a higher roll for a more important character who can either have a greater impact or is in more danger.

You can roll a d20 by typing “dice+1d20” in the options field. The highest roll in each category for each character will be used.

With Patches in the front, the Knockers are held back at the point of the spear. But he isn't exactly doing much on the offense.

”Get out of the damn way! I can't hit them with my sword from back here- you should be behind me!”
”I don't want these things to get any closer!”

Jon waits for an opportunity to strike. Suddenly rushing in, he strikes down hard, splitting the head of a knocker, and then moving to the next for yet another killing blow. Elly is too far back and without a strong weapon that can reach- but her flaming torch still manages to seer one of the creatures that tries to go around the two men ahead.

”You both are country folk- I come from the big city. You have no idea how much I hate these things! They're in every old attic and basement, every little haunted shack- die you fuckers! This is what you get for not letting me sleep soundly as a boy!”

Jonathon hews through the opponents with a Critical Strike. This means, for sure, his prey cannot escape or survive the attack on their own- no quarter for these inhuman monsters. As Jon finishes off the last one with a decapitating blow; a spray of dead bugs comes out of the creatures neck instead of blood- not a wholesome creature of flesh and blood, but a creature of the night.

Patches has a defensive bonus from his armor and spear! Patches is in the front and is most at risk!
Jon gets a critical strike! Jon's weapon can't reach. Jon's armor gives him some protection. Jon had no defensive rolls!
Elly is in the back and at the least risk! Elly is not well armed for offense.

After the fighting is over, the adventurers take a short rest.

“Jon... you have to be more careful. You didn't even try to defend yourself!”
”Guess I got a little carried away. The knockers are too weak to harm me.”
“Maybe- but you're lucky you had armor too. Only superficial injuries. Still, I don't like that attitude in case we run into something actually dangerous...”

Jon took some superficial wounds. No healing resources were expended.

The Knockers had nothing of value and carried no useful equipment to scavenge. Not even their bodies- examining the places where they fell, Jon and company can only find a few scraps of what appear to be loose shed skin or bits of very old and frayed cloth, dead insect shells, and stains of dust marred into the floor. More fearsome creatures will certainly safeguard treasure- but taking it from them will be the challenge...

As they continue on, the group continues to explore the Mines level. Eventually, they find a shaft at the end of a tunnel; leading straight down into darkness.

”Hey, this could be a way forward. Though I can't see the bottom.”
”Maybe we could climb down?”
”Perhaps, though I'd feel better if we had some rope.”
“What? You didn't bring any rope?!”

Elly looks shocked. Jon shrugs. ”Didn't think we'd need any.”

Elly snickers. ”Oh Jon- I thought you were supposed to be the one to look after our practical needs- our masculine, practical, down to earth leader- ehehee.”

Jon blusters, but doesn't say anything. In the meantime, Richard readies a stone to toss down, but is stopped.

”Hold. It could make enough noise to alert something dangerous below...”

This could be a shortcut to lower places in the dungeon- and you know the treasure will be greater the deeper you go. What should they do?

>>
>>5520290
Yes. Of course when you draw a picture in a drawing program it's going to be very high res, so I size it down before uploading it so it doesn't go over the filesize limits and because I'm a bit anal about it I don't want the thread to be too tough on the archive servers for /qst/. My current tablet is a Huion H610 Pro, but it's really basic and there are a lot of cheap drawing tablets (I don't recommend buying one of those ones with a build in display screen unless you're an actual artist who works professionally in some capacity.) For me this is just a hobby so that tablet + stylus is plenty for me. The only thing I would recommend is checking how large the tablet is so you actually have space to draw on because there are even cheaper ones but they're too small imo.

Rolled 4 (1d6)

You decide to drop a stone down to test the hole's depth. It may be shallow enough to climb down, or perhaps it could be an bottomless well that leads all the way into the depths of the underworld... no way to know for sure.

Patches drops the rock. It falls down into the dark pit and for several seconds there is no sound. You count the time it takes to land, until eventually you hear a clatter deep below.

"Wow! That is deep."
"You're right. I figure we could reach it with enough rope, especially if we tie the end off to one of the support beams in the mines; it should hold. But the depth is deeper then any part of the mines dug here... by humans."
"What does that mean, Jonathon? Is it a way into the underworld?"
"I don't think so, but wherever it leads its much deeper then where we are now. It's at least one, maybe two levels of the dungeon below. The legends of the mountain say the locals dug too deep and unearthed something that made them abandon the mines; that could be what they run into. But it can't be this hole in particular."
"Hmm? Why wouldn't this be the hole?"
"It's too straight. Nobody is going to dig straight down; it's impossible to get the excess material out of the pit easily, not to mention the miners. No, I think something made this hole coming up. Let's keep track of this and move on..."

With the pit being way too deep to climb down, the adventurers move on- the pit could become a useful shortcut at the very least...

While you are worried at first that something may hear the noise of your stone drop- nothing comes of it. If anything was attracted to the noise, it probably would be many levels deep in the dungeon, without the ability or intelligence to come investigate the rock's origin. However, this little experiment does give you a taste of wandering encounters. Spending a long time in a single place or making a lot of noise has a chance to attract trouble.

Moving on, the mine becomes more confusing as the simple, almost straight entrance shaft with a few forks have now began to grow into a larger network as miners had to search every direction for veins of precious metals. You make sure to put Elly to the task of marking every direction you go and keeping track, leaving clues or signs. You don't want to get lost down here!

Eventually, in the shadowy darkness, you come across a small pocket of opened up earth that has an unusual sight.

"Look! It's a treasure chest!"

It's true, in the shadow of a small corner of the mines, a treasure chest stands alone. You can clearly see it, but something about this seems off.

"...Hmm, I don't like this. Who would store valuables here, in the mines? People dig mines to take valuables out of the earth, not put them there."
"Jonathon, are you being paranoid again?"
"No, I'm being smart. The chest would have to be dragged here from somewhere else- no no. I smell something fishy."
"Whaaat? It's just a chest! Maybe someone in the village used it as a safe place to store valuables from the neighbors!"
"...If you had any valuable treasure, would you haul it all the up here in a chest among the monsters and dangers, or would just bury it on your farm? Or under the floorboards? Come now, Richard."
"Hmm, I guess that's true... But what's the issue here? Let's just go check to make sure it doesn't have any treasure in it first. Why not?"

The danger? It's a trap. You look closer and find nearly invisible tripwires around the base of the pillars on all sides of the chest.

"I found the way around this devilment. Hark! Look skyward."

Above the chest and the pillars is a collection of stones held up by loose netting. It appears as though triggering the tripwire would cause the tightness of this netting to loose, thus dropping the stones on any unfortunate's head. Beyond being stoned from above, anyone who triggered the trip would cause a great deal of noise- drawing monsters or the trap-maker towards it.

"Move with care. As long as we don't step on the tripwires, we will be safe."
"But who would do such a thing? It seems very cruel."
"Perhaps a human jealously guarding the dungeon for themselves. You mentioned other treasure hunters have been there, it's not unthinkable they may have set a trap. But then again, the orcs may have set it as a way to alert themselves to activity in this level of the dungeon. Or maybe it could be a creature- a goblin could inhabit this level. They do like setting traps. This is much too complicated for a knocker, and too deadly for a gremlin..."

Jonathon checks the chest after making sure to keep his friends safe from the tripwires. Thankfully, it doesn't appear as though anything is hooked up to the chest itself. He shakes it and pushes it, checking its weight.

"Blast, it feels empty. And it's locked."
"But how will we know what is inside?"
"It's likely the chest was just here as bait..."
"Can you open the lock?"

Jonathon could pick the lock, but it would take some time. This would give a chance for anything wandering this floor of the dungeon to sneak up and attack the adventurers. Or he could just leave the chest here- after all, he doesn't feel like anything is inside.

Rolled 6 (1d6)

Jonathon decides to squat by the chest for a few minutes to pick the lock.

"Guard my back while I pop this..."

It's not a difficult lock, but he isn't exactly the most skilled locksmith and he's certainly out of practice. By the time you've burned through another half of a torch he's finally finished it. Looking inside, the group finds an empty chest with a loose scattering of what appears to be pieces of paper in the bottom of the chest, thrown away and disheveled.

"Papers, but no book..."
"That is useless to us. None of us can read."
"Actually, I think Jon can read."
"Just a few things. Just my name, the name of a few shops, things like that. This is way too complicated for me."
"A bit disappointing to spend all that time to just find some paper. Maybe we could burn it for more light?"
"No! You idiot. These papers could be extremely valuable- to the right person. The question is, why aren't they in a full book? They'd be much more useful as a complete set. Maybe even a spellbook..."
"Maybe they were in a book before- which was shook loose? This chest could have already been stolen but a few pages slipped out and were forgot about."
"Good idea, Elly. Lets store these in your bag- keep it away from the wet as to not ruin them..."

With that, you have found some mysterious pages. With nothing else for you here, you leave the chest and gingerly avoid the trap to continue on through your adventure. While the papers were an interesting find, you still haven't quite found any treasure that would make this expedition and the risks worth it. You've got a good feeling you may be getting close however...

...And now you're lost.

"Dammit!"

As both your first expedition into the dungeon, and without a set map or experienced enough guide, you find navigation difficult. You end up getting turned around in a complex cross section of tunnel. Now you aren't sure if you've been here yet. You check the wood supports for charcoal marks and find none- so this is either a new area, or you've gotten really turned around.

"...This is all your fault, Richard. I never should have brought you along."
"Jon... come on, he just wanted to help."
"No, he wanted a cut of the loot without offering anything in return."
"Err, please Master Jonathon! I am your guide. I've spent my whole life around this mountain!"
"Oh, you grew up in the mountain? I just thought you grew up in a barn."
"Jon- shhh!"
"Listen to your woman friend! I will find the way back to the path!"
"You'd better!"

Patches gets his bearings again. He tries to think about the mountain from his vantage beneath it, which side the rises within would be on, but quickly abandons that notion. It's not quite so easy when you're underneath the mountain- but then he remembers the direction they've walked, and back again, puts it together. Eventually, he finds a single charcoal mark on a pillar- and instantly knows where they need to go.

”Right this way- lady and gentleman.”

Jonathon's a bit flustered that this bumpkin has shown him up, but it is better for everyone in the group. The party of three move on to the next room- an it turns out to be a very important one.

The next room is a slightly more “lived in chamber”, with a few decayed articles of furniture and clothing along the farthest walls. In the center of the room lies a table with two knocked over and broken chairs. The floor is a tomb- two skeletons long since dead splayed out beyond the table, one with a pickaxe embedded in the skull. But on the center of the table something gleams. Bringing the torch closer- you can see what it is.

Gold!

Shimmering nuggets of gold, pulled from the walls and soil of deep in the mountain. These are big nuggets- the smallest is as long and thick as a man's finger. The rest are hefty, with the dirt and crud already mostly picked clean off of them. Gold from the Earth! Of course, an equal collection of gold coins would probably be worth a bit more- higher purity- but this what you were looking for. Treasure!

”Alright, let's quit gawking! Stuff your bags and pockets full!” Jonathon commands, and the other two step to it. Soon, their hands are full of nuggets of gold- finally having found a treasure hoard worthy of adventuring.

That was until a strange, ghastly sound seemed to emit from behind them. The moment they touched the gold, something in the chamber was disturbed...

“My gold... Why are you stealing my gold~?” There was a loud whispery voice- only for Jon to draw his sword and turn, before falling to the ground in fear.

”G-Ghosts!”

Two spirits, no doubt belonging to the dead bodies in the chamber, rise up from the corpses in all their ghastly radiance. They emit their own light, and appear as they had when they died- with all the trauma of their deaths. They have no physical forms; only these apparitions. Your weapons are useless against them. These spirits don't seem especially wrathful, but angering any spirit is not good. You could end up cursed, or worse.

”Your gold? No- it's my gold. I dug it up.”
”Noooooo- I found the gold, it's mine. Give it back...”

While nobody in the party was an expert on spirits or exorcisms; everybody knew the basics. When people died traumatically, and when their bodies were not properly buried, their spirits can become trapped in the mortal realm and become ghosts- haunting the place where they died or sometimes the item most involved in their life or death. These spirits seem to be feuding over the gold- it could be the gold itself is haunted, or maybe just this part of the mines...

“Jon, I'm frightened.”
”Shh- I know.”

>>
>>5522870
More specifically, it would have been impossible for someone to slice a throat like that after being attacked, it'd have to be from the back, given the curvature means you couldn't do it with a frontal swing. Even more so, a swing to the brain would destroy any motor functions.

Ergo, Pickhead attacked first.

None of the group are sages- none are religious enough to know incantations to banish spirits, and none have ever tried to appease angry spirits before. Jon speaks first-

”Look! Both of you? You're dead! It's not your gold anymore. You killed each other over the gold- that's why you are both here!”
The spirits looked confused, sad, but unchanged. They hovered ominously towards Jon and Patches- any over the gold to protect it.

”Noooo- It's my gold. Only I had the strength to dig it up. He slit my throat to steal it.”
”No! The gooold is mine! I found it through my own cleverness- but that left my vulnerable to you who would overpower me and take it...”

It seemed the spirits can tell they are both dead, in some capacity, but it hasn't resolved them. It seems their fetter that binds them to this realm is over the ownership of the gold. The spirit moves a bit closer to Jon- Then, Elly speaks up.

“Wait! You both owned it equally! You were supposed to share it! Without you, neither of you would have found the gold, but without you, the gold would have never been dug free. Neither of you found it alone; much like us, we work together. Don't you see?”

The spirits don't move or speak- but they do seem to stop. There is a sense of realization as the two spirits look at each other, almost as if reconciling their differences. After a moment, the two ghosts begin to fade away, their appropriations disappearing into the darkness and quiet.

”Elly... You did it! You calmed the spirits emotions- good work for a woman.”
“Thank you, Jon. Can we leave this creepy mine now?”
”Ohh- I want to do that too!”
”Pack up the gold in your sack- we'll split it, like those old ghosts should have!”
“Shhhh!... Don't tempt their ire. Let's give them a proper burial and put them at peace...”
>>
Of course, it's bad luck to speak ill of the dead, and it's also more likely that disturbed and disrespected spirits will become vengeful spirits. The two miners have had their spirits quieted for now- but a proper burial will end their haunting for good.

”It is surprising that a simple murder could result in two vengeful spirits like that. Not unheard of, but that must be because of the curse of the mountain...”
”I've heard such tales. Do the villagers speak of it often?”
”No, we consider it a small taboo. But know this- the mountain tends to hold the souls of those slayed there in some manner- there are more ghosts in those halls then there will be for fifty leagues in every direction.”
”That is true. Dungeons attract restless spirits like flies to honey...”

With the ghosts defeated, the party take the gold in their possession as well as the remains of the two ill-fated miners. They bury their remains on the mountainside as the sun goes down- their first delve into the dungeon beneath the mountain a success. The adventurers split the gold evenly, three ways, and find themselves each with a small fortune...

Elly hires a group of villagers to build a new house in the village. In it, she keeps enough room for Jon, as he has no other accommodations in the village- and he needs to save all of his money yet still. Richard returns to his farm with his own family- this little trip has quickly made him the richest man in the village. It was a good thing he returned too- he seemed to have left house without permission, and as the direct male descendant of the oldest family in the village he has a certain ceremonial role to play- losing him would have been a tragedy for this small, isolated community.

But soon the winter comes- the snow and cold making travel to the mountainous dungeon impossible- and ill-advised, as the nights which hide the monsters and creatures get longer and darker. The three adventurers remain in the village despite their recent influx of wealth- over the next part of the year, the three remain in the safety of the village as the Moaning Mountain continues to cry out in the night. Sated for their need for treasure and adventurer for one day- but for how long?

The group of treasure-hunters have some time off. What do they each do?

Over the winter; Jon learns how to read better and studies the pages. Elly, who is letting him stay with her, gets closer to Jon as well. Her interest in him that led to her following him eventually lead to more- though Jon is too focused on his current problems to really reciprocate his feeling. She knows he'll come around soon.

”Thank you for letting me stay here Elly. It means a lot to me to have a person I can trust to stash my gold and valuables to pay off my debt.”
“You still never told me who exactly you owe this debt too. There's no way they'd chase you to this tiny village, right? Blackwater is so far away!”
”Ehh, I don't want to bother you with it. Maybe another time.”
“...Well, did you figure out those pages yet, Jon?”
”I can read them, yes, it's just the word choices and language. It's very old and archaic- and it just uses big words. A lot of it just seems like nonsense- like listen to this bit- “...And so Eno begat the one named Apsu, who layeth in the waters beneath the earth, and so from him do all creeping things come. And the one named Abazuzu came to rest beneath the food of this mountain, who only came when the world was no longer under the gaze of the North and South stars. And the one named Abazuzu fears no weapon, except the point that lays in the fire that never stops burning, and the one named Abazuzu can rend through any armor, except-” And then it cuts off there, because we don't have all the pages. And no, sadly, no spells.”
“...Well, instead of being cooped up in here all day, why not come outside with me? I hear the first wildflowers are going to bloom soon. The first person in the village to see one is said to be lucky for the rest of the year.”
”...Ok. Sure.”

In the meantime, Richard has not been hoard his wealth. Spreading it around the village, a sense of prosperity has overcome the people. At the same time, Richard's newfound charity and his position as an inheritor of the oldest family in the village means people are beginning to look up to him. The villagers take Richard to a secret place nearby the village and give him the chance to lead the secret procession around the mountain- carrying a symbol of warding. It is a great honor- and the experience of walking around the mountain in the deepest part of the night while it wails, pacing the very path that will keep that curse trapped within, has given Richard a certain spiritual authority.

But as the snow melts and the next year begins, the money begins to run low. One trip to a dungeon cannot make one fabulously wealthy- nor solve all their problems. The village is now richer and happier, but still mostly unknown to outsiders. The successful expedition has also encouraged several locals to join the party on their next delve into the dungeon.

The first is the Snail from last year. He never left the village- apparently he curled up in his shell and stayed asleep all winter- which is way he was working for the tavern owner for a safe place to hibernate. It appears that he, like the rest of his race, cannot speak- but is large and strong and carries his own armor with him on his back. He has a large sword and will be a powerful warrior to join your cause.

The second is a trapper. This man is one of the best local guides and has actually hunted and trapped game on the cursed mountain a few times- but he says the animals there are of poor quality and he tries to avoid it. He carries a bow and is older, more experienced and patient, and seems to know wild animals and monsters well.

The third and final person who asked to join you is an archivist- who also seems to be from Blackwater, the largest city in the region, just like Jon. He's been studying all nearby local legends and lore, and is both literate and knowledgeable about history. He may even know a little bit about magic- but he mainly claims that he will earn his keep as a healer.

RULES
You may hire as many or as few people as you like. Remember, each person you hire brings new skills and more bodies to bring into the dungeon, but will also split the loot more evenly. When voting, please specify Yes or No to each person who asked to join you. If the number of "Yes" votes outweighes the number of "No" votes, the person will be hired.

Of the three asking to join your party; you accept two on your next treasure-hunting expedition. The first is the Snail which you knew from last year; the local strongman who acted as a bit of muscle to intimidate any petty thieves and do work around the village. Strangely, he never seem to have told you a name- everyone just calls him "You" or "the Snail" and he doesn't seem to mind at all. While a bit mysterious, the snail-man seems to be a gentle giant. He does have a big sword, but no armor besides his shell, which gives you some pause.

The second newcomer is the Archivist. You later learn his name as Nasir. He's a bit of a small man, also unarmed, but seemingly skilled with his mind. Also being from the city, like Jon, means he seems more streetwise and less gullible then the other party members. You hope he can earn his keep despite his stature and overlap with Elly's ability as a healer...

The party readies for their next expedition. Patches says his armor has since rotted away since last year, and he has no means to replace it at the moment; but he has replaced his trust in the physical with a trust in the spiritual. Jon makes sure to buy some strong rope along with torches, food, bags, and other useful supplies. Elly has a nice larder to stock up her own medicinal herbs from living right here in the village; so soon enough everyone is ready.

The climb up the mountain is uneventful. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Archivist is in the highest spirits, chatting idly with Elly or Richard. He doesn't seem to understand the danger; though to be fair, your entire group has relaxed quite a bit since the first time you came up the mountain; experience will do that for you. While you are not as scared as you once were, you know that getting treasure from within this place will be harder now; the more times you enter the harder it will be find new valuables as they're stolen away one by one. Plus you have to consider any new threats that may have arrived in response to your intrusion last time...

As you reach the mines again, you have to make your way and retrace your steps. After an entire year out of this place, you have forgotten most of it, but the charcoal marks are still there, smudged only a bit by time. Thankfully, the first level is made up of mostly long tunnels, so it isn't too hard to navigate. You come to the great hole in the ground you found the first year- now equipped to take the plunge.

Suddenly, Nasir interrupts you before you tie off the rope. He speaks;

"Excuse me, Jon of Blackwater, was it? You are the leader of this group, yes?"
"Erm, not exactly but... what is it? I need to get this rope secured so we can repel down deeper."
"Not to put a damper on your plans here but... I think there's something your not considering here. It may be unnecessarily dangerous to go down that pit."
"Hmm? We already found a great pile of gold on this floor, last year, I doubt we'll be lucky enough to find another. Going deeper is our only chance to find a fresh treasure hoard."
"Oh I agree, but it is this pit that concerns me. You see, I studied a bit of natural and supernatural ecology- and dungeons are a bit like ecosystems in the normal world. The top of the dungeon is the least dangerous, where as supernatural effects and monsters become more dangerous the deeper one goes."
"Do you see another choice here, little man?"
"Yes. The miners mentioned digging something up that interrupted them before the mines closed- that's what all the local hearsay of that time period says. This pit was obviously not dug by human hands. That means that there is likely another way down, one both safer and less deep, then this one. Given how deep this pit is according to your notes from last year's delve; it is likely this pit bypasses both the entire mine-tunnel system AND anything immediately under it. In other words, I think this pit could skip an entire safer and potentially lucrative floor of the dungeon. It would be unwise to jump in the middle of an ocean before testing the shallows first, if you catch my meaning..."

You decide to search the first level of the dungeon, the mines, a bit more thoroughly. This is still closest to the surface and you aren't in much danger- especially not with your growth in numbers. The Knockers weren't a big threat before- this time? They probably won't even approach with the Snail in tow!

You decide to trace around the mines and look for another way to proceed forward. While the hole is tempting and you brought enough rope for the excursion, you have to consider the possible injuries and dangers of dropping down; plus you don't even know where it leads. While the stone that fell last year didn't sound like it splashed into water or anything like that- there's no telling if the hole drops directly into a monster's lair or some kind of trap. Besides, even if you did take the hole route, you'd have to climb back up it while trying to carry loot in tow with potentially injured party members? Bad plan.

You decide to hold off using that shortcut until you know the layout of the dungeon better. This time, you search the mines and go to the narrowest and longest tunnels, trying to find the last places where the miners dug before they finally uncovered something they shouldn't have. It takes quite a long time to recover your old steps and follow your old charcoal marks; but your party eventually finds what you're looking for.

"Hark! There is a break in the wall that leads to a different chamber!"
"Wow- The chamber ahead is made of smooth stone. The walls are also squared; not this crudely carved mess of the mines. That chamber must have been made by human hands many, many years ago and the miners dug it back up on accident."
"Well, let's go investigate it..."

"Oh no... Jon, I don't like this..."

Elly has gone forward with the torch to check out the next area; and it is indeed a totally unique and different place buried deep underground; only by chance or perhaps inexorable fate of the cursed mountain did they come across it. It is the second layer of the dungeon- and it is a crypt.

Ahead you see smooth stone; simple and primitive but not crude. It was clearly made with love and devotion in mind; a good and respectful place for the people of long ago to bury their dead. Richard, the most informed on local matters, is the most surprised.

"People from the village... were buried here? I did not know anyone was buried in the mountain. The graveyard is nearer to the village. Can you read the names on the tombs, Jon?"
"They seem to be names. Pen-EL-O-Pee. Yes, people from the village."
"That is very curious..."

Nasir makes a quick point about the likelihood and tradition in many parts of the world for people to bury their dead with valuables, and Richard confirms that that tradition has been practiced locally for a long time. Though he is remorse to do so; the fact this tomb is so old and forgotten nobody in the village knows about it means these dead are no longer being sanctified and cared for; these are forgotten dead. Cruel, but perhaps any treasure could be better served in the hands of the living.

"...Fair warning, Jonathon. There is no faster or more surefire way to anger the dead then to steal from their graves..."

Going forward; what is the party's policy on robbing the tombs and coffins of these ancient deceased?

>Loot everything!
>Only open the richest and most ornate looking resting places
>Refrain from disturbing the dead
>>
Looting everything seems like an real easy way to get cursed. Maybe get Patches to try to use his Spiritual Authority to calm down the dead so we can loot?

You've decided not to stop and break open every tomb- but you will still dig through the rich and ornate ones; the ones with the best chance of treasure left behind. Of course, you should ask Richard what he thinks...

"Richard, aren't these the symbol of your... belief on these very tombs? Is this not a sacred place?"
"...I don't know, Jon. This place isn't exactly consecrated in faith. This whole mountain is cursed. I would never bury the dead here; perhaps it was more wholesome of a place many years ago, but now these tombs are not of my own people. Nobody remembers these dead; they are of the second death."
"Aren't you afraid of retribution from the spirits?"
"Maybe. The spirits of the recently dead are more active and sensitive, but the spirits of the long dead fade away. Eventually, they go to the second death, where their spirit passes on and their body and possession become simple things and minerals; no more an anchor to this world. The second death may sound a terrible thing but without it, this world would be a prison for all souls until they can finally pass on into the hands of the ones above and beyond us. If we do find restless dead here, perhaps banishing them to the second death is a preferred outcome to being cursed to wander these halls for all eternity."
"Hmph. But this place is old, and you said old spirits fade away."
"Most do. But if spirits of old do remain, then they must be very powerful to stay anchored to this mortal realm. The older the spirit, the more powerful they must be..."

With that, the party move forward and ignore the smaller tombs and sarcophagi. It seems in this time, the dead were entombed in stone instead of in soil- as if their bodies were merely being stored instead of fed back into the sacred earth. The stone sarcophagi are so ubiquitous here that there is no chance all of these are noble or wealthy burials- even peasants and beggars must have been given one to fill up these halls. This is a good sign little wealth would be found in these.

"Can anyone literate tell me what this inscription says?"
"It says; "Family o' the Hills Resting Place."
"That's all I needed to know, Nasir. This is a wealthy burial chamber- the hill families always are. Let's check here first."

As the tomb draws closer, the party notices strange markings on the floor and walls, including what appear to be monstrous tracks. The way ahead is very dark and dead silent; but an unusual presence gives pause. If by choice or instinct, the conversations fall to a whisper.

"...I have a bad feeling about what is ahead, Jon. Something is there." Elly says.
"But we have the element of surprise..."
"Your hunches are always good, Elly. Perhaps we should try to sneak up on it?"
"Jon, you're the only one who is suited to such a thing, even in your armor. I've always dragged my feet, and I think our snail friend drips too often onto the stone floor- a sure giveaway."
"Don't look at me; my sandals are too loud!"
"Grrr... Perhaps I could steal away some treasure without alarm, or get the jump on whatever beast lies ahead?"
"Oh no, Jon, please don't go off alone!"

Now they have to decide how to tackle what lies in the darkness. Unfortunately, without a monster hunter or tracker, there is no way to know exactly what is up there; but with stealth you can approach the encounter with a small advantage...

>Have Jon sneak ahead alone (small chance of serious consequences)
>Try to have the whole party sneak up on them (big chance of minor setback)
>Charge in as a group and fight on!
>>
>>5527851

You've decided to have the entire party move together- but as quietly as possible.

"We can't see without the torch, but we can't exactly sneak up on any monsters either."
"Perhaps we could try to smother it without dosing it fully? Cover it up in one of these offering bowels- keeps the embers warm enough to start another. Or same thing- use a torch almost dead with a fresh one ready to spring in when needed."
"That's a big risk. Maybe we could just move together with Elly at the back- holding the torch around the corner so we get just a little light?"
"I don't like this plan in general..."
"Creatures of the darkness tend to be less sensitive to light then you may think; they may even be slumbering or with their backs turned to the entrance to their lairs..."
"Alright, we'll go on ahead. Keep the torch nearer to the floor to cast less light, and stay quiet. We'll rise it up at my signal..."

As the party draws into the dark and dreary tomb, Jon hears the slightest sound of something shuffling in the darkness. He doesn't feel the "warmth" of a living creature, nor hear the sound the shallow breathing, but moreso a "presence"- like the feeling of being watched all over. He knows they are not alone.

"Now!"

With a spring, Elly's arm shoots up, a new torch touching the old. The pitch quickly ignites and casts off a bright light that illuminates the tomb with a flaring start. Like revealing a criminal caught in an act, several creatures look back at the explorers with not a sound- but the look of startled cats. Their eyes glint back the firelight menacingly.

"G-Ghouls! Corpse eaters!" Richard cries. He has heard tales of one picking through the village's own graveyard; but that was just one small, stunted ghoul- nowhere near as bold and horrible as this pack.

Thankfully, your ambush went well. With your surprise attack- you managed to avoid being surrounded by an ambush. With the snail friend in the front along with Jon and Richard, your two unarmed noncombatants in Nasir and Elly are both safe from the fighting, and do not require any defense rolls to avoid injury, though extra attack rolls can be made for them.

"Jon! Stay near the torchlight! They fear it!"
"Watch out for those claws! And whatever you do, don't look one in the eyes!" Nasir shouts from the back, enthusiastically.

Striding towards the hateful light, the ghouls close in to attack. However, you had the advantage, and got to dig into them with Richard's spear and your other blades.

The ghouls are fierce opponents. Stronger then the Knockers by a great margin- their skin is weak and sickly and their claws are brittle- but they are still filled with a sort of unnatural vigor and speed towards killing and feasting on the flesh of the living. While Nasir and Elly didn't contribute to the fight- they didn't get hurt either, which is good. Just holding the torch and giving advice was helpful enough.

Snail Friend's attack roll was good! Snail Friend has a powerful weapon and muscles!
Jon's attack roll was good!
Richard's attack roll was powerful!

Your offense was enough to end all of the ghouls- enough to keep them from running away or coming back again. The dead creatures begin to fester on the floor, a disgusting smell- but they are at least dead and will haunt this crypt no longer.

"Huzzah! Take that!"

However, you also took some damage in return. While you were worried about Snail Friend due to the fact he wears no armor- not even clothing barely- his shell and mucus-coated body was more then enough to protect himself from the bites and claws of the ghouls. No wonder his race are such fierce warriors.

However, not everyone else in the group was quite so lucky.

Jon's defense roll wasn't great. Jon has taken superficial injuries. Jon's armor protected him from serious harm!
Snail Friend's defense roll was good. Snail Friend is too tough to get hurt by such pitiful attacks!
Richard's defense roll was poor. Richard has no armor. Richard took a serious injury!

"Ouch..."

Richard is sitting down. While his spear met the flesh of many enemies, and should give him a good advantage of reach, the ghouls were feisty and one managed to get some deep scratches on his body- plus a small bite out of his leg. That looks pretty bad.

"...Why is his blood that odd color?"
"My blood isn't... like this normally. I swear! I'm not sick, am I?"

Elly looks worried.

"No, it was probably the ghouls that did this to you. Wounds from such a creature can become infected and end up making you sick..."
"She's right." Nasir added. "Ghouls do not have venom, but are so unclean it often doesn't matter."
"Oh Jeez... I thought my ancestors would protect me from such things..."
"Trust your ancestors for matters of the spirit, and iron for matters of the real world."
"... Nassir, help me here, I need to bandage this up. I hope you have some purifying powder."
"Of course, I wouldn't have come into such a filthy place without it..."

At the same time, Jon inspects the spoils. Along with the Snail, the two look at the rich tomb they intended to plunder.

"This sarcophagus is sealed and carved finely- look along the base. I can barely read it. "Here lies a mother and father of many brave and noble children- something else here- and their riches go with them unto the next life. I think we found it. But how will we get the lid off?"

Cursing his shortsightedness, Jon hadn't thought to bring an appropriate tool to pry open such weighty stone lids from their coffers. But then again, nobody knew what the party was going to find this trip anyway. However, among the members of the group a small plan goes around. The lid could be opened by using a long straight piece of metal- and since you don't have a plybar, you would have to use a sword. Snail Friend reaches for his own immediately, shaking his head. That's a no go.

As for Jon, his sword would suffice. With Snail-Friend's strength, they could open the coffin. But by doing so, there is a good chance that the sword could become bent, dulled, and useless- thus meaning Jon would be unarmed for any further combat encounters until he could get it repaired.

"Hmm... Risk and reward..."

"Hmm. I suppose we could try it, but the slot under the lid is razor thin. We couldn't use the butt- so it's still a risk to the blade. Plus the crossbar might make things difficult unless we go sideways- thus being the biggest chance to bend it..."
"Still, go for it Jon. I'm not going to be very helpful in a fight right now anyway."

With much sweating and swearing- the party manages to open the casket finally. Jon's sword, unfortunately, didn't make it.

The stone lid pops off and slides to the side- nearly crushing Richard's poor bitten leg in the process. But within- treasure is found! The burial of the two nobles must have been a beautiful sight. Flowers and old fabrics line the inside of the stone sarcophagus, as well as offering bowls made of gold at their feet- with stains and cores of what looked like ancient fruits and foods. More importantly are the jewelry and adornments on their bodies- golden necklaces and braclets, belts, studded with precious stones and jewels- gold of a high purity and skill of ancient hands.

"Yes! Yes! Look at it!"
"Ho ho, look at the glitter! Such fine workmanship. Modern jewelers are skinflints- no passion in their work- not like these people."
"...I will say a prayer over the dead. They have certainly passed the second death given how extravagant and peaceful this burial was. Still, I hope they don't mind us making use of these treasures..."

Quickly stuffing the treasures away in Elly's bags- the party has found a nice bit of riches from the burial chambers here- though it is notably less in total weight then the golden nuggets they found on their first trip.

"Trust me, in the end, all this hardship will be worth it..."

"Jon- what do you mean we're not going back yet? We've lost two weapons, my leg is wounded..."
"You're welcome to leave the way we came in, by yourself, Richard."

"Aren't we supposed to be cautious Jon? What's the harm in leaving now?"
"No no no! We can't leave yet. There's more here. I can sense it. This isn't enough. I barely managed to get all of you lot together for this trip- to get the courage to come back again. And there is the matter of the curse..."
"Jon- it's an ancient tomb. It's not going anywhere."
"You're a fool! Do you honestly think that this treasure is just going to sit here forever? The news of our discoveries have already been getting out. I've been trying... err... Elly and I have been trying to keep it under wraps, but it's impossible to keep such things a secret. Other treasure hunters will be coming here soon too- they own the mountain as much as we do. We've already opened the way and killed the monsters guarding the treasure. We can't stop now- else the treasure just laying there in the next spot will be taken by another."
"Surely we can just come back tomorrow?"

Jon eyes Nasir with disdain.

"No- don't you all get it?! I did my research. This mountain is cursed. What is the meaning of the curse? All who live upon this mountain are cursed. What does living on mean? Sleeping, camping, living. Are we inhabitant this mountain, visiting it few days, like a farmer's watering hole or dusty old study in a city mansion? Then we are living here. The only way to navigate the curse is to visit. Once a year, at most, never sleeping or staying over our welcome. We do not want the mountain's aura to stain its way into our souls. I do not want my spirit trapped here like the others among the ancient stones. This is the only way- we will march on!"

Jon's authority as the leader, despite his seeming greed, keeps the party here for now. Nobody wants to cross him- and Richard is naturally not going to try leaving alone- especially with no weapon and a bad leg. It'd be suicide. But until Jon is satisfied, the party must contend with their limited resources. Elly thinks there must be a way to help this situation; maybe she can talk Jon into something.

We should’ve brought the fucking Ranger- if we’re only visiting once a year, we need the extra manpower to outcompete the competition.

Frankly, we should consider robbing the treasure hunters coming out of the mountain to make up for the opportunity-cost. That, or setting up a guild system to profit from others. Hell, even a tavern- thinking about it, we could recoup the mountains wealth by investing in the Adventure-tourism sector.

Maybe we’ve hit upon a business and networking opportunity if we leverage our wealth and knowledge right.

Treasure hunters are glorified grave robbers, and the majority of them will be less like Elly or Patches and much, much more like Jon.

>Scavenge weapons from the crypts
Ah shit, Jon has dragon-sickness.
>>
Without much hestiation, the party goes to grabbing weapons from the crypts. Thankfully, warrior burials are common here- especially the swords belonging to the rich man and wife you just plundered. The weapons are old and rusted- but will be better then nothing. Everyone is eager to grab what they can and then get out of here.

"Now let's see... which way to go..."

Two paths diverge here. There is a more narrow path which seems to belong to individual and personal tombs- though less rich then the one you just looted, could be a place to grab some treasure. You aren't looting every peasant coffin, but hopefully these family crypts have more reward to offer.

The second path is a wider corridor with religious symbols carved into it- paupers and priests both seem entombed together ahead. While these tombs are something you'd pass over- it could lead to something big- a larger ritual chamber? Or the hidden treasure of an order of priests?

Jon will visit both before he is satisfied this trip, but you can do them in either order.

You have decided to raid the smaller family tombs first- a good idea to work your way up. Perhaps you can find some new useful equipment- and it would be helpful to locate any problematic things before you turn your back on them...

The first few tombs yield a few treasures. Silver hair pins, a golden ring on the hand of a fat noble, the jeweled hilt of a sword long rusted to useless shards. Then, you turn a corner into a dark tomb and suddenly, literally out of nowhere, a spirit stands before you. It's quite startling; darkness and emptiness, and then a being just there- looking at you, quietly.

"Gah!"

The spirit isn't like the two miners. This one is of a woman, and she looks a bit afraid and alone. Spirits almost always appeared as they did at the end of their life- their wounds and bodies in the same state as they were just at the moment of their deaths. This woman looks ghastly- her entire body torn up in slashes, like from a sword or long knife, her hair torn as if grabbed by a brutish hand. She isn't accusing you of anything, nor moving towards you, but she takes a moment to scan the darkness, her motion sluggish and delayed, as if pantomime of a victim nervously checking for their attacker.

"...Jon, take care. No matter what emotion a ghost displays, they could snap at any moment, or reflect her death's pain back at you. Imagine if she was torn to death by the ghouls- she would share that pain with you."
"Those aren't ghoul scratches. Richard, could you banish this spirit?"
"I believe so."

Elly, having her confidence raised from her first encounter with the spirits from last year- speaks a little louder.

"H-Hello? Is there something you want?"

Jon didn't dare turn his back on the ghost, but he felt like chiding Elly for getting its attention. Damn, but the ghost is looking with an intense focus, as if trying to communicate something. I mean, the spirits you met from last year could speak and understand, this one just doesn't seem very talkative.

"...Jon, what should we do? This poor soul is trapped here like the rest- I could try to free her, or at least put her back to rest..."

>Have Richard banish the spirit
>Try to talk to the ghost
>Stay silent and see what it does

She’s probably a recent addition- as in, someone who came into the crypts alive and whose bones weren’t properly sanctified. I would be willing to put her bone at rest if she’d only show us the way.

How are you all liking the quest so far? Is there anything that could be improved upon?
>>
>>5532874
I'm quite happy with it! It's a neat take on a party-based dungeon-delve. I like the career system and time-skips, and the combat system is novel!
>>
>>5532874
It's been pretty nice, i have to say. I can't complain much about it. The characters are nice too.

I'm, of course, hyped for when things go into the actual deep delving darkest dungeon areas. And for Elly and Jon getting together, still not letting that ship stay docked.
>>
>>5532874
The curse timeframe. A year seems harsh, I’d like to take them aging a bit slower.
>>
>>5532922
It's probably just there to make the downtime turns more realistic and avoid the "fifteen minute adventuring day" problem.
>>
>>5532964
I don’t mind taking months off, but a full year of nothing is a stretch.
>>
>>5533206
I don't mind the 'year between delves', but I think we should probably have the characters get to do two things between Delves, rather then just the one. Perhaps one 'work/training' choice and one 'social/leisure' choice for everyone, rather then just the one thing for a whole year?
>>
>>5533219
That is still a whole year between adventures, which means that it takes very short time until suddenly the adventurers (the human ones, at least) are past their prime
>>
>>5533260
This, and I would like to go on other adventures before we’re forced to retire.

Jon puts up his hand; the entire group becomes silent. The nervous spirit looks around, as if looking for something, and in the quiet it finally moves. Floating along softly, the spirit fades in and out of being, fragile and barely-there, like the wingbeat of a butterfly, before it pulls into a tomb. Slowly, it points towards an engraving on a large stone coffin, looks forlornly at the living, and then disappears.

"...Something is written here. What does it say?" Elly asks the two literate people in the group.

"It says... Anna-Maria, Aged Twenty Two years, life tragically cut short by... "The Shadow"?"
"Huh- THE shadow? Now that is curious."
"Do you know what that is, Nasir?"
"The Shadow is the name for a murderer. A serial killer who stalked this town."
"Nonsense. Such a thing would not happen here." Richard says.
"No no, not NOW it wouldn't. But this was back hundreds of years ago, when the mine was still open. Back then, Stoneshove had a different name and was much bigger, filled with fortune-seeking men and women of unscrupulous means and morals. There was a killer who attacked random women at night with a long knife, who they called "The Shadow". He killed four before he was caught. They broke him on the rack before they ended him."
"Good."
"...It is very sad the spirit told its story, but is that all it truly wants? Or is it still stuck on the grief of being killed, even after their killer was brought to justice?"
"...Well, in the meantime, let's skip this tomb to not disturb her, and move on."

"...Hey, Elly, can I speak to you for a moment?"

While Jon, Patches, and the Snail were busy with moving through a larger patch of rubble and looking for a way into the next tomb- Nasir was speaking quietly to Elly.

"Hmm? What is it, Nasir?"
"It's about Jon. How well do you really know him? I'm curious- we're both from Blackwater you know."
"If I "know" him or not is none of your business."
"Oh no- I didn't mean anything like that! I was just curious. Blackwater is a complicated place."
"Well, he mostly keeps to himself. He's opened up to me a little bit- but he doesn't tell me much."
"He's mentioned he had a debt to pay. I wanted to know more about that."
"Why do you care? I thought people from the city keep to themselves."
"Wow, you're almost as paranoid as he is now! Haha. I swear I come to you with the most innocent of intentions. It's because of divination."
"Divination?"
"Yes. With tea leaves. I have tea every morning. On the day I met Jon, I saw a curious omen in my tea; the symbol for the dragon."

Elly didn't much like Nasir. He was a small, weaselly, bald, soft man from the city. But she was just too curious now- she wanted to know more about Jon, and any type of divination was like catnip to her feminine soul.

"...What does that omen mean? Do you think it came true?"
"The symbol for dragon means a great personal challenge, an obligation that cannot be broken, or a very powerful personality controlling the actions of another. While I wouldn't consider myself a soothsayer or anything- but my tea leaves are never wrong. So tell me, what do you know about Jon's debt? I'm so dreadfully curious. Don't you want to know? There are many ways a man could get into that situation where I come from..."

"Well, what is it like where you both come from then? Blackwater? What does Jon's debt have to do with it?"
"...Blackwater is a big city. It's not like here or the place you grew up in. It's different there. People can get into a lot of trouble there if they start burrowing money."
"Why would anyone need that much money for? Couldn't they just work to pay it back?"
"Heh. Your innocence is very cute. No, in Blackwater, almost all debt it issued by the Merchant's Guild. They're very rich and powerful. Their masters learned the secrets of numbers from Dragons. They learned about things like compound interest and percentages- these are advanced, math magics. It means someone who takes a loan from then and doesn't pay it back may be stuck paying it back forever; even higher then what they originally took back."
"Wha- That's horrible! Surely that goes against the law- the Law of the Golden Prince? Why would everyone agree to those terms?"
"The Golden Prince's law only prevents people from passing debt onto their children; but not for people's own lives. Sometimes they don't know any better, but most of the time its because they are manipulated. Who do you think owns all the gambling dens and bawdy houses in Blackwater? That's right- the merchant's guild does. Once they get their hooks in someone, they don't want to let them go. Especially someone with skills like Jon..."
"What about Jon? What could they possibly want with him? He doesn't have some special skills a bunch of criminals would want."
"Oh come on, Elly. Haven't you seen? Jon is so much more practical and down to earth then Richard or you or even the Slug. He's distrustful of people and doesn't view life as something precious. He's a big man, strong, but also stealthy. What kind of work could a bunch of godless plutocrats get out of a man like that?"
"...I don't like what you are implying Nasir."
"What was he carrying before he came here? Just a dagger, right? I wonder if, in order to pay off his debt, what the Merchant's guild were making him do in those shadowy streets of Blackwater..."
"Are you trying to turn me against him? I don't want to hear this anymore."
"Just don't give your heart too willingly to him. Maybe he's more like the Shadow then you think."
"Shut up, Nasir. Why do you foreigners with your weird dress and weird bald heads need to come and stir up trouble?"

Just then, Jon's voice echoed from the small crypt they had been investigating.

"Over here! We found something!"

"Yep, that's cursed alright. Says right on it."
"-And you're seriously considering opening it?!"
"Of course- why wouldn't we?"
"But- But it's cursed!"
"I know- but not all curses are created equal. Besides, there are ways to combat such things- why do you think I hired Nasir for? He's a bit of a magician."
"You can't take a blade to a bit of magic!"
"...Men learn ways to fight against nature, to fight against each other, and the fight against sickness. Why not a curse as well?"
"... Of course, not all curses are created equal. This one has its own inscription."

To any and all who read these words know this;
Whoever shall take from the fruit of my labors of my life-long lived,
the richest man in Cantus, who refuses to give his treasure even in death-
I condemn the rats to eat you alive! Beware!

"...So we're sure this is a real curse, right? Put on by some two bit sorcerer?"
"Maybe. But it could also just be something apparent. If someone was truly so greedy and possessive that they didn't want anyone to steal their treasure even after they died, then it could be cursed simply from that greed as well. I mean, he paid money to have that engraved on his funerary box."
"Don't look at me. I deal with spirits of the dead. I don't have any authority over dark magic."

By both the group decision, as well as Nasir's own self confidence in his abilities, he is the one to open the cask.

Putting his hands around the lightweight stone top, he slides it across and waits a moment to peek inside- everyone waits with a held breath to hear a banshee cry or feel a rush of death come from the box- but nothing happens. Jon scoffs- ”Some curse.”. The treasure trove is a funeral box with decayed remains at the bottom- but most noticeably are the intricate treasures laid around the bones.

“Oh! Look at these- silver!”
”Didn't he say he was the richest man around? I was hoping for gold...”
“But look at how well they are crafted! Plus the gemstones- this is a great treasure indeed. Perhaps the lion's share of his wealth went to his children- but he kept this treasure just for himself. And now, it's for us!”

With giddiness, in almost flagrant disregard for the supposed “curse” put upon him, Nasir reaches into the box and takes out the silver treasures, putting the rings on his fingers. He shines in the torchlight- a welcome addition to your group's haul for this trip.

”Eeek! Look! Look!” Elly suddenly says. Jon whips around to see her pointing at something on the floor- a big fat rat.

”Look! It's staring at Nasir! It's the curse! It happened already!”
”Elly- it's just a rat. There are rats in every tomb and crypt in the whole wide world.”
”No, no! It's looking right at him! Why would a rat get this close!? Maybe you should put it back!?”
“Nonsense girl. This ain't a thing.”
”Elly, I knew you were scared of bugs, but rats now too? Haha.”
”That's not funny! - Grrr!”

Jon kicked a pebble to scare the rat away, and then the men in the group counted up their newfound fortune. Any thoughts of a curse were mostly put aside- after all, what harm could a rat do? Elly's fears and concerns were being written off and it burned her.

Taking a few steps away into the half-light of the torch, the men quickly added the treasures to their hoard while Elly took stock of her own emotions. Truthfully, she saw the world in a very complete way- people were physical things with physical needs- food, healing, comfort, and sex. It was all very simple. All you needed to do was to learn how to provide those for the people you care about, and life was good. But when it came to matters of the spirit, of magic, and of scary things like curses and souls- it scared her badly. At least the spirits of the dead she understood, though she pitied the poor things.

It was just about then when, out of thin air, an apparition appeared before Elly with a soundless whisper. She looked at it with a start- she could see straight through it and it seemed an illusion, a figment of her imagination, but it was there. Much like the quiet ghost girl from before, she did not want to say anything at all, lest she break the spell from the tiny breeze created from her breath. The spirit seemed then to make a hollow noise as it spoke lowly- Elly frozen as she saw the stretch marks along each of the spirit's limbs and neck- its unnaturally long arms reaching outwards.

“Is it... someone new? You are not as the other four... No, she is new!

Out of nowhere, the spirit touched Elly with a part of its form, a dagger forming from its ecotoplasmic stuff- and despite this being a being of the soul, Elly felt a sharp fire as a deep cut appeared across her arm but a second later.

”Pretty girl! She bleeds pretty blood!”
”ACK- JON! HELP ME! PLEASE HELP!”
”Oh please, PLEASE die here. It's been the same girls over and over- maybe you could even become my favorite. DIE!”

The crazed, malevolent spirit begins to slash its weapon wildly at Elly's unprotected body- she raises her arms up and feels a rush of panic as she tries her best to do something- anything to defend herself.

”El-Elly! Richard! Banish that Phantom, quick!”

Elly can't do much- she has no weapon or armor to defend herself with. All she can do is hope. She puts her hands up and falls back, hoping somebody will save her- that anything can protect her from this onslaught of evil. After a few moments, the spirit coming down atop her, a voice clearly rings out.

"BEGONE!"

Patches has stepped in; speaking with a loud and melodic voice that the spirit cringes from, as though its very tone harms it.

"You have no power over me, wayward Shepard of souls! I own four- you own none!"
"BEGONE!"
"Arggh- be silent! I owe you nothing, do you hear me?!"
"Go to the hell that has been prepared for you below. BEGONE!"
"Grr..."

With that, the dark spirit fades away within a few seconds- fading to nothingness. Jon quickly scoops up Elly, and calls Nasir over to help bandage the wounds.

"Oh Jon... I was so scared! I thought I was gonna die for sure, and be trapped here forever. Oh gods- please don't leave me."
"It's ok. I won't leave you again. This is my fault, we got too arrogant. I'm right here."

Elly cries, though Richard seethes from a distance.

"...Blast. That spirit isn't like the others. It isn't seeking resolution or peace to pass on- it wants to haunt this place. It's a cursed thing."
"But you got rid of it, right?"
"...Only temporarily, Jon. I'm sorry. My spiritual authority isn't enough to permanently banish a spirit like that. It needs judgement from a higher power. This place isn't safe with that ghost stalking the halls..."

"Woah! Would you look at that. That door is huge!"

Your path is blocked by a large, highly decorated and inscribed door. Jon looks over the decoration, and scoffs when he finds no gold or silver leaf to the engravings. They are merely stone.

"Do you know what this says, Nasir?"
"It seems to be a story, but without a conclusion? No- it poses a question."
"This is a puzzle door."

Jon seems to know what that is better then Nasir did, which surprised everyone. It's a type of complex lock- in which a specific item or slot must be filled in order for a door to open. Jon explains that some very rich and wealthy people will carry strange items; necklaces made into the shape of leaves or animals, smudged rings made of lead, miniature versions of hammers and swords- they won't be stolen by pickpockets, but can be fit into a slot to open locked doors or passages.

"There seem to be several stone tablets here- one of them is probably the right one. There's probably even a trap if we put in the wrong one."
"We better be sure we get the right one, then. Nasir, what does the door say? Is there a clue?"
"Ahem. Let me read it out loud..."

There was once a pregnant woman with four lovely children.
The oldest was Hannah.
The second-oldest was Joshua.
The second-youngest was Luke.
And the youngest was Brittany.

One day, a group of orcs attacked, slaughtering one with spear, another with axe, and a third trapped inside a burning building. The mother, in a desperate bid to save her last remaining child, ran, but both her and her last child were killed with an arrow.

Which child died last?

>Hannah
>Joshua
>Luke
>Brittany
>>
>>5536625
My gut instinct says Brittany, as the mother was probably pregnant with the youngest, and shot through the stomach. My gut is also telling me that that’s not quite right either, but I am at a loss at how to solve the puzzle otherwise. Any of you lads have a better idea?
>>
>>5536639
Thinking about it further, trapped in the burning building doesn’t mean dead. I’m guessing that would be Luke? Would the building burn longer than the woman surviving the arrow, or would the trapped one escape to die last, years later?

Are we playing with gender norms, in which case the boys fight and Hannah gets trapped?

Last remaining? Would that be the one with/in her, or the one trapped in the burning building?

I’m probably overthinking it, but it may be Hannah.
>>
>>5536649
Good logic, it seems too obvious to be britanny, i think the option is Hannah

We should still get the Snailman to do it and step away, though, his shell is the most durable.
>>
>>5536625
Hmm. The clue says that 'there was... a pregnant woman with four lovely children'. Since the pregnancy is mentioned with the mother - and you don't name or assign any virtue to an unborn - we have to assume that there are five individuals in total, or 6 if you include the unborn child.

Assuming there are no tricks and the names only list the born children (the Mother would be older then all the children, so 'the oldest was Hannah' might refer to the Mother's name if it did), there are five fates:

Child dies to Spear
Child Dies to Axe
Child trapped in burning building?
Mother, dead with last child.

Now, it specifically calls the fist two children slaughtered; the third as 'trapped', and the fourth and the mother killed by the arrow. As such, it is not impossible that the 'third;' child trapped in the burning building survived at least longer then it took to shoot the mother; and it is also possible that the 'last child' was the one in the belly rather then a named one, leading to the survival of one of the others?

Going by the images on the door, There is-
A Bow (Murder Weapon)
A Sword
A Spear (Murder Weapon)
Flowers

Curiously, the Axe and the Burning building are not featured... unless the 'axe' is a 'Seax', which these days would be recognised more as a knife, so would take the sword imagery. Either way, the burning building is not featured; implying that perhaps it might not have been fatal?

Assuming that the ones expected to fight were the ones cut down by weapons (Joshua and Luke), that leaves two possible scenarios:

In the first, the Mother's name is not known: her boys died fighting and Brittany died with her to arrow, leaving Hannah surviving a little longer.

On the alternate scenario with Hannah as the Mother's name, the child that died with her was her unborn baby. In this case, Brittany was most likely the one trapped in the building, who might have lived longer.

...in conclusion; can we look around for more information to answer this riddle?
>>
>>5537237
>leaving Hannah surviving a little longer.
This can’t be the case because the riddle specifies the mother tried to save the last remaining child and that they died together by arrow.
>>
>>5537245
Last remaining child isn’t the last child, which was killed by an arrow.
>>
>>5537245
>>5537253
It never stated that they died together.
>>

>Why aren't you picking the blatantly obvious option in the tomb trap?
>>
Puzzles have never been /qst/ questing strength. I remember that one puzzle in that bodyhorror Thing quest (I don’t remember the name) being so bad that the QM even agreed. Hell, in Space Wrecker Peon Quest I had to literally decode the written puzzle on a napkin just to get the right frame of reference, and we only solved it because of a fluke and the QM’s generosity, because we got the right phase but then discarded it because we thought the second part was plant related, not the whole phrase.
>>
>>5537521
The issue, of course, is that there's not much to go on, and the answer can be really anything

It could be britanny, it could be hannah, it could even be one of the boys and the whole thing is a trap. There's really no 'set' answer in an interpretative puzzle.

After a moment of silence, the people in the party look to Nasir. This is the kind of thing he may know; either a literary reference or simply figuring out a puzzle based on the language. Jon's literary skills may not be able to pick up the slight differences in this ancient writing.

"...Well, it's clear that the question is a puzzle. There's probably a trick to it."
"Why would anybody make a puzzle to a door something you could figure out? Like I understand the mechanism, but why give us the keys and the right one among the pile here?"
"It could be a kind of test- a cleverness test or religious test."
"I know of no belief that puts the names of random people as some great key to paradise- or any other place, for that matter."
"Just trust me on this!"

After much thinking, Nasir decides on Hannah and recommends that Snailfriend puts the tablet in. It's a heavy piece of stonework- and besides, in the event the trap is sprung anyway, he'll be the least likely to be seriously hurt. Besides, Nasir is confident he figured out the puzz-

SWISH! CRACK!

Without warning, the moment the tablet is inserted, a long and sharp metal blade falls from the crack between the heavy stone doors. The Snail ducked inside his shell as is his ancient instinct- and the heavy shell protected him from what would be a skull-splitting cut from that long trapped blade. While the Snail is unharmed, his shell now does sport a large crack- it's a good compromise. That blow could have killed any of the other men here...

“...Look- I said I'm sorry! How was I supposed to know it was so literal!”

The snail is chewing out Nasir- with his hands. The deliberate motions and heavy fists and points towards Nasir lets the rest of the party understand what the Snail is saying despite not knowing what the actual hand-signs mean. Nasir gets a much better gist of it.

“I mean, everyone saw it said a pregnant woman. So logically, we all assumed that was part of the riddle- not the solution hidden in plain sight. Of course, since it didn't tell us which child died to what, the only way for there to be one child left for the mother to save would be the one that hadn't been born yet, so I guess that was really obvious it meant the unborn in her belly...”

Jon, already having moved past this nonsense, looks into the chamber that the door lead to- a large ceremonial hall. The roof of which is so high with its arches roughly carved into the mountain stone that your torch cannot even illuminate the highest points.

”Wow! This is a cathedral. Richard, this could have been the great sacred site of the local mystery cult. Is this really the first you've ever heard of it?”
”We have our own places of worship. This is something else- a long lost sect maybe, or the foundation of it- long forgotten. The ways of these people have degenerated over the years- lost to the mountain like so many other treasures...”
”What do you think it was used for?”

Nasir, eager to get away from the angry Snail, speaks up.

“This seems to be a funerary chamber- the place the dead were brought and rites read before being entombed elsewhere. One of these side passages goes on a long ways- I think it may have lead out of the mountain at some point, but now thousands of tons of rock block the way.”
”..Should we really be looting a church?” Elly asks, to nobody in particular.
”It's long forgotten- and we can loot a temple without spitting in the eye of the Gods. Besides, this is Richard's cults' ancient origin. It would make things right to return the riches to the people.”
”After our cut, right Jon?”
”...”
“Holy... everyone... come look at this...” Richard called from the central chamber.

It was a massive tub. It was more then enough for an entire person to lay down in and then some- even a few people could squeeze in there. It was deep too, and with a layer of dust and grime removed- it shined like the moonlight.

”It's silver! Pure silver- almost- the whole thing! It's huge!”
“This must have been a absolution bath- cleaning and purifying the corpses of the dead before they are sent to their final resting place... I can't even imagine how much this is worth.”

The entire party looks over the massive bathtub- so thick and rich. While it wasn't gold- simply this amount of precious metal could be used to make thousands of coins- easily. It's amazing that this small village was ever able to have something so beautiful and rich in the first place- though you suppose at the time, it wasn't quite so small. Just how rich was this mine that the local faith could create something so valuable as a great treasure?

”...But how are we going to get it out?” Elly asked shyly. Everyone was snapped out of their reverie for a moment. The tub was huge and weighed a ton. Even with the heavy metal feet snapped off, its still huge and made of a heavy metal. Jon, Patches, and Nasir together could barely move it off its platform.

”Blast- this is way too valuable to just leave here for next time. We absolutely must bring this back. This is the hoard we've been working for this whole delve.”
”...Anybody have a plan? We're going to be really weighted down with this and all the loot we have already got. Just getting the treasure out will be a challenge...”

"Let's load this all up- use the tub like a wheelbarrel. Just... without the wheels."
"Hey- look at what I found beneath the pulpit."

It's a trapdoor. Circular, carved into the stone. It's not locked, surprisingly, but a heavy bolt was slid into place from the top opening as if to keep it from being opened from the bottom. It was also hidden underneath a decayed remains of an old carpet. Richard opens it up- and there is an immediate feeling of damp air rising up to meet you. The darkness from below is barely illuminated by your torch- it's a natural cave system; the far away sounds of dripping water and the walls of smooth stone jut with sharp spikes from the floor and ceiling.

"It's a cave! Yet another floor of the dungeon, found. The old temple-makers probably built this to keep it away- the door would be sacred if it was built in a church. Good way to keep it safe from forces beneath. I wonder how deep this place really goes..."
"It may as well go on forever. We'll go down there next time, no matter what."
"...Even if it reaches all the way to hell?"
"Cover this up and hide it again. Let's keep this in mind for our next trip. We wouldn't want anyone else stumbling across it while we're out..."

With that, the treasure is loaded into the silver washing basin. It's a big, heavy thing; just barely possible to lift with everyone pitching in. Richard is wounded, Nasir barely can do more then Elly; but Jon and the Snail can make up for it with great effort. They just go slow- and have to take a lot of breaks.

"Urff.. Gotta... get out of this... mountain... before... sundown..."
"I... don't think... that's gonna happen- urgh- Jon!"
"-Hey, did anyone just hear that? Scratching! From the walls?"

Just then, the party sets down the great silver tub as they hear a sound getting louder. There is a shrill squeaking and a cacophony of noise as a pack of animals round the corner.

"L-Look! Giant rats!"
"Oh hell- I hate rats!"
"W-Why are they looking at me? Oh no! The curse, it's real! It's really real! Help me!"
"Get back, Nasir, Elly! Ready up!"

Due to the large amount of noise, you've been ambushed on the way out by a random encounter- this time with a group of giant rats! Much larger then their normal counterpart- these wild animals are much more fierce and predatory. Strangely enough, it seems that most of their attention is focused on Nasir, as though some kind of unnatural hatred is burning them on. Nasir is vulnerable this combat and will likely be torn apart if he isn't defended.

Yes, people are able to roll for characters more then once, but each person can only place a roll once, so if you re-roll for one character then you might be taking away another character's opportunity to attack. Plus, you and I have already rolled, so neither of us can make another roll.

The swarm of rats attack. While animated by some unnatural hatred for Nasir in particular; the group are still beset by biting mouths and gnashing teeth.

Nasir, thinking quick, jumps into the silver chariot that your party has sweat so much to get this far. In fact, his defense roll is so good he can help Elly jump in as well- keeping both of them more or less safe. While rats are excellent climbers; its a good enough barrier that they can't get past without getting clobbered by the dynamic trio of fighters- the Snail, Jon, and Richard.

But Richard, too preoccupied and injured from the previous encounter, ends up taking a bad bite to his bad leg. Without a defense roll- Richard has lost his leg. He's bleeding rapidly.

"OOaaERRGHH!"

This is bad. While Jon's armor and quick feet keep him mostly safe; even the Snail is taking a few bites from these seeking mouths. Without good enough attacks, the party is losing this combat.

Whenever you fail to have enough high Attack rolls, you "lose" the objective of the combat encounter. In this case; leaving the dungeon with your big treasure haul behind- the tub.

But even if you leave the heavy thing behind- there is still a tough choice you have to make.
>Leave Richard
>Sacrifice Nasir
>>
>>5540360
>Sacrifice Nasir
Fuck that guy.
I mean, he's a clever and useful chap, but he's deifnitely less useful than a religious and civic authority, even down a leg. He's also seditious against Jon and upset Elly, so they have no reason to prefer him.
>>
>>5540360
Wait, what, so we can't even get the tub? Not even if we sacrifice someone?

>Without a defense roll- Richard has lost his leg.

Is >>5540183 not a defense roll for Richard?
>>
>>5540495

>>
>>5540360

A) You really should have told us beforehand that we needed to get some attack rolls, you basically just stated that we needed to defend Nasir - and we did that! We should get combat round 2: around we go again at the very least for that.

B) Richard/Patches got a defence roll that was ignored.

C) Right now we don't have enough players to regularly roll even AN attack/defence dice for everyone, let alone put in much effort to upping poor rolls - in this case, you explained that the priority was defending Nasir, so that's what was focused on. If you're going to be that harsh about 'ignored' rolls for other areas you should perhaps allow us to roll both an attack and defence dice for one single character, rather then either/or.

That would be boring, it'd just be the same voting prompt again for round 2.

Let's talk about it. What do YOU think the consequence should be for failing?
>>
>>5540831
We barely had enough people to roll, you're just supposed to waste your vote if someone gets something higher than you?

Not to mention you said that they were going after Nasir, and THAT was the danger, Nasir dying, not "oh sorry you didn't roll enough attack rolls, you lose, all your treasure goes bye bye and also Richard is a cripple and you have to leave someone to die"
>>
>>5540831
>That would be boring, it'd just be the same voting prompt again for round 2.
Combat tends to happen in multiple rounds, yes. I guess that's boring for some people? But I figure it to be pretty normal.

>What do YOU think the consequence should be for failing?
I mean sure, this is certainly a fair consequence for failing, I think the contention is more that the circumstances of the system make it so that failure is completely out of control of the players. We need at least 5 players rolling for defense not to immediately have catastrophic consequences (like someone losing their leg), and more than that if we want to do damage. Realistically we need a large amount of players participating in rolling in order to stand a chance in this system. As players have fallen off, it is literally impossible for us to win any non-trivial combat, regardless of our decision making. The system is certainly interesting and leads to interesting choices when you have enough players to roll and decide who they want to contribute their rolls to, but how it is now with insufficient numbers is just plain sad.
>>
>>5540831
I think being clear that we were supposed to roll the attacks to defeat our enemy, that the goal or priority wasn’t merely to defend Nasir, and that if Patches didn’t get a roll, he would be instant-killed (for the purpose of this combat at least, if not the story).

It just comes down to a lack of clarification from my point of view, though tying party size to popularity is an interesting mechanic.
>>
>>5540850
Actually, it benefits us to have less people, so Elly isn’t coming back on a return adventure. Jon and Snailbro are decent picks, Richard is going to be out of the next adventure one way or another, Nasir isn’t combat effective but can be a cursefodder.

Hard party limit is like, what, 3? We can probably sustain rolls effectively for 3 people with current levels of quest participation (assuming we don’t lose anyone from from this gotcha).
>>
Alright in that case, we'll adjust for future delves. For this one, just vote for which character you want to sacrifice.

Hey, the sins of an unclear and unmoving QM. At least we made some other adventurers day, right?

I genuinely wonder how many anons will leave because of this, because any smaller party will affect our potential profit. I’m already sketchy on 3, moving it to just Jon and Snailbro will effectively kill the point of delving into this bloody mountain.
>>
>>5540831
Anons will always respond poorly to a loss. There seem to be a few flaws in the system as it exists, as it IS highly contingent upon the number of players and this quest isn't bringing in Space Monke numbers... But I'm fine with the result, personally. it is what it is.

I think instead we should have some transparency.

I really want my quests to have some amount of tactical decision making and real consequences for mistakes. I don't think it's right that every quest needs to have arbitrarily easy dice rolls and the protagonist(s) never suffer serious setbacks. What's the point of a dangerous adventure if nobody dies? Well since it seems like most people weren't happy with the previous results and the dice game didn't seem fair (and the outcome a little nonsensical since I couldn't think of anything that made more sense at the time) especially given the win/loss state of the combat and who is involved not being telegraphed better.

Instead of trying to nudge things in the direction I want I'll just give some options that I like the sound of and let the players decide on which ones. Also I'll take write ins but nothing that nullifies anything previously that has happened, because I want to keep what has happened "on screen" canon to the game. So please vote on the direction you think is most interesting, not just best for the players, and that you want to have happen next.

This fight is going nowhere fast. More rats have swarmed out; if by coincidence or Nasir's curse- they attack in greater numbers. Your entire group is exhausted from a day of delving, plus trying to carry back this ungodly thing to the village a mile away- it's just not going to happen. With Richard now crippled, you can't make it away- you have to flee. But you're so exhausted and out of resources. The only hope is to abandon the one thing these rats are interested in- more then anything else.

Nasir, still mostly safe inside the silver tub, watches as Jon motions- the Snail picking up Richard's body and cutting a quick path. Inbetween Nasir and the rest of the party- a few rats come in to nip at his exposed fingers and face- ducking as far back as he can from the slippery sides of the tub. It won't be long before they find a way in.

"W-Wait! I'm surrounded- I can't follow you! Jon-? Jon! Come back! Elly! Someone! Don't leave me here!- Please!"

Jon and Elly shut their ears as they carry the torch and what little they have grabbed of the loot- the silver rings and golden bangles- and leave Nasir behind to his fate. They hear his screams echo before they finally manage to make their way back to the mines- and up again.

And then, they're out. Badly wounded, down a man, but alive. The cool night air washes over them; a sensation of freedom and life fills them after the dark dread that threatened to consume them just moments ago. Now, their path back to safety is lit by the cold moons- the gold and silver moons.

Jon is not happy however. He whirls to the mountain itself, standing in the darkness and looming over them.

"There! THERE! Are you happy, you damned cursed place?! I brought a victim into your waiting jaws. Hole to hell! Cthonic monster! Are you satisfied!? Look at what I do- what I am forced to do- all for greed! For cold, ancient, reptilian greed! Another soul trapped; and for what? What purpose do you serve?! If I but had the strength I would rip you apart, stone by stone, with my bare hands, you accursed thing. Is this what you wanted?! Why must you put more weights on my guilt!? Through what fault of my own am I cursed with this burden- why am I being punished?! Why!? Why must you guard your secret treasure instead of spitting it out freely to the people of the world who need it, vile edifice!

...Well? Where is your voice now, "Moaning Mountain"? Speak! Answer me, you damned thing!"

There was no response. The mountain was silent. Even the chilling moans that sounded from the mountain each night did not happen. This was one of those nights it seemed- the silent nights. Could the mountain be satisfied for now- happy with its sacrifice?

"J-Jon. Look. Please look Jon. Tell me I'm not imagining this. Jon..."

The party returns to the village. Greatly exhausted, they return to their homes and living spaces- their treasure clinking in their bags in the middle of the night.

Over the next few days, the process of healing and counting out the spoils begins. The treasure haul this time is massive; a collection of jewelry, rings, and the great silver tub. And, cynically, Jon considers the fact that without Nasir, they have all received a bigger cut of the treasure. But before they can begin their plans for their time off and the next delve; the party and Jon are approached by two figures, specifically interested in the golden body jewelry plundered from the ghoul-infested rich tomb.

The first is a collector. Richly dressed and skilled in appraisal, he makes his bargain.

"I represent a collection of very wealthy clients who have an interest in artifacts and treasures from ancient Kingdoms- many are descended from the Kings and nobles of old. As such, we are willing to pay a higher price for these items of antiquity- more value for the gold and jewels then you could get by prying them loose and melting them down into bars and coins. Their artistic and historical value is higher then their scrap value to my clients, you see, and we are willing to pay an advanced premium. Consider it."

The second is the local blacksmith.

"Well, I can't offer you much- I am but a humble man. I will melt the scrap down for you and give it back; but I'd really like to take a close look at those pieces of jewelry. The clasps and way the metal is made is so fine and delicate; it's interesting to someone of my trade, and I am always interested in learning new things. I know it's not very tempting, and you're already doing my a great charity buying my humble equipment and armors for your dungeons- you even came to me to melt down this huge tub o' silver you found- so I know it's a lot to ask, but let me know what you think. Thanks."

Which person should you give the golden jewelry too?

>Collector
>Blacksmith
>>
Hmmm, the collector seems like an better choice, but at the same time i'm guessing that giving it to the blacksmith means that there's a chance he might 'learn' how to do this manner of jewelry
>>
>>5542645
>Collector
Shit is fucked, get cash
>>
>>5542645
Ooo, tough choice! The collector nets us more money but takes it away from the local community and may attract the nobility's attention for better or worse. The smith keeps it local, imparts skills to the local professionals, but probably (again for better OR worse) keeps us relatively unknown.

>Collector

I'm intrigued.

Ah yes, let the curse grow. What a smart move anons.
>>
>>5543121
>So please vote on the direction you think is most interesting, not just best for the players, and that you want to have happen next.
>>
>>5542645
Give one piece for the Blacksmith to study, sell the rest to the Collector. Blacksmith just wants to examine the technique. The technique should be the same through all of them, he shouldn't need our entire bundle to study from. One, maybe two for comparison's sake, should suffice.
>>
>>5543128
Funny how no one chose to lose the loot then, eh? But I guess anons deserve it, even though they did fail the attack check to save the man they then sacrificed.
>>
>>5543139
+1, and the collector can't say it's an "collection" thing, they're from completely different sources
>>
>>5543143
Losing the loot would not have been interesting, we spen a lot of time on it
>>
>>5543139
Frankly, supporting local industry is smart, especially since other adventurers are definitely coming to plunder the mountain and we’re going to be here for a long time ourselves.
>>
>>5543147
Dealing with an actual loss and legitimate setback would be.
>>
>>5543150
Being set back to literally worse than what we started with would not. Getting your entire progress deleted is bad.

You decide to sell the pieces to the Collector, instead of to the Smith. The smith may not learn as much now; but you can certainly pay off your debt quicker this way! Plus, who knows, this might open up a business partnership. The Collector says he will take the treasure back home to his clients; and also asks to be given first notice when a new piece of treasure is found. Later on you may find even more valuable items in the mountain, perhaps even historical or legendary artifacts that the rich and powerful will pay a pretty penny to own.

But in the meanwhile; the silver tub takes up most of your time and energy. You brought it to the local smith who has begun the process of shaving off pieces and slowly melting them down into ingots. The amount is staggering in total- the thick brimmed silver tub was exactly as valuable as you thought. This is a fortune- easily enough to buy a large fertile plot of land or even start a merchant business back in Blackwater. In fact, a humble man could probably pay to live their entire life with this amount of wealth at their back. It's a strange feeling; the golden nuggets you found on your first delve were very valuable, but only worth a few large luxuries or enough to be a nice bonus to a proper well paid tradesmen. This is a life's savings. Despite the metal being less valuable the sum total in its concentration is a magnitude more. It's true then; the deeper one goes into the dungeon the more rich and rewarding its treasures become. But the more danger as well.

The blacksmith is doing very good work for you- and also repairs your sword, your armor, and has melted down and crated a massive amount of silver for you and your party. All he asks for in return is two or three bars to help pay the way for his tools and to pay men to bring new him new, fresh forgestones. You give him a dozen. No hard feelings.

It's been a month since returning from the delve. Jon speaks to Richard for the first time after the loss of his leg; and has already had a nice prosthetic attached.

”...Wh- What? You want to go back!? After all that's happened?”
”Of course. Your expeditions into the dungeon have made a lot of money- some of that money ought to go to the local people, wouldn't you say?”
”But... your leg...”
”So? I can still walk and fight just fine, you'll see.”
”...No offense, Richard, but I don't think that's a good idea. I won't allow you to accompany me next time. I can't risk my limited time there with someone who could be dead weight.”
”Oh? On whose authority? Did you forget whose local mystery-cult just found sacred artifacts from deep within the mountain? Who do you think the locals are going to help when I say that we should stop you from entering the newfound holy place?”
”Psshk. Fine. But you have a deathwish...”

I want to see what is down there too, you know. I've spent my whole life by this mountain. I bit my tongue when you and Nasir were speaking; since I know you are both educated and I am just a bumpkin, but now I know the truth- my traditions and mysteries that I've known for my whole life are right. Your belief about the curse is totally wrong. The curse is not by those who live on the mountain, it's those who die there. The mountain is cursed, yes, but its power only traps the spirits that die there and what dark forces it attracts. Going there only once a year is a waste of time. We should organize more trips at opportune times.”
”...Alright. At this rate, I may not be able to get enough money as is, so I'm listening. I don't like being blackmailed into it though.”
”You city folk don't know the rhythm of country life, but I figured you'd be used to a little blackmailing; hah! Anyway, we should go twice. The farms are way too busy in the planting and harvest seasons, and winter is too cold and the mountain is snowed in anyway, so we should go twice each year. Once in the spring, just after the melt and the ground softens right before we plant our crop, and again after the harvest, before the winter chill sets in. Summer is the time for relaxation but also war, and as such will be the time when we have the most ability to buy and sell our finds to traveling merchants, and the winter is a time for healing, training, and the many religious festivals and holidays that are good for the soul- and cures for curses and ill-energies of all kinds. What say you?”
”Hmm. I think this is a good plan. After all, the last two years I felt very anxious with nothing to do in this town, simply staring at that mountain every day dreading or dreaming of the next time I go within.”
”Just as the farmer lives according to the wheel of seasons, we live according to the same wheel. But instead of sowing the field with seed and reaping the grain, we will sow the dungeon with blood and souls, and reap the treasures from within. Farmers of the Mountain.”
”...You speak so candidly of it. I thought I was the practical one.”
”Nasir was just one of many whose fate was sealed the moment he entered that cursed place. Perhaps seeing and helping souls into the next life has given me a different perspective; even dying in a place like that isn't a permanent hell. Next to eternity, eventually, even the most damned soul will find a way to pass on...”

It is now the Winter.

With Richard still getting used to only having one leg, as well as Elly dealing with her trauma, it was too early to go back to the dungeon right after this year's harvest. Your normal time of going, during the middle of summer, means that you didn't quite have enough time this year to enact your new schedule you have devised with Richard. This gives you a bit of a break. Still, going back so soon in the Spring is exciting and stressful at the same time. At least for now, you have a moment of peace...

Sadly, you have no seen your other new party member, your Snail Friend, anywhere. Then you remember; the snails sleep through the Winter and he has already paid for safe lodging while he hibernates. Oh well.

In the meantime; what are the remaining party members going to do?

I think our party becoming an institution with the locals is a smart play. In fact, we should probably bring a couple gold relics back just so that blacksmith could learn from the past and enrich the local community.

Over the winter, Jon and Elly get to know each other a bit better. A lot better. While Elly had always been a little interested in Jon ever since she first saw him- but he never quite reciprocated those feelings, until now. It was only a matter of time, after all. There is talk of a marriage ceremony between the two, but it will have to wait until the Spring...

Elly has also been developing her herbal knowledge and cures from the local wise-women and herbalist. She's learned what herbs are good for what ailments; studying the dead and wilted ones to grab new fresh shoots in the Spring just before their next trip. These herbs in particular are good for a number of aliments, specifically as an antidote against most common poisons.

Richard has been spending his time getting used to his new missing leg; and the new prosthetic. While he was humbling going around on a crutch or a peg for a while, with the massive amount of wealth every member of the party has gained over the past few years, he has set aside some for his own use. It's a bit of a vanity- finding both someone who can both fit a proper prosthetic and embed a secret mechanism was not easy and experts had to work over it over the winter from far away places...

”Patches, your new leg- you even bought a matching boot for your real one and everything!”
”Ah ha, looks good, doesn't it Jon? But there's a secret trick to it. Watch what happens when I shift my weight onto the heel-”

With a little click, a hidden blade popped free from the toes of the boot. Jon smiled, amused as the clever trick weapon.

”Have you ever seen anything like it?”
”...Yes, actually, I have. Though most rogues are more practical- just hide them up their sleeves.”
”Ahh, of course the Blackwater-ites have such things! But still, don't tell anybody else about this secret weapon- it might just come in a pinch.”

”Elly- you can't stop drinking the contraceptive tea. Then you'll get pregnant!”
”-And?! So what, you don't want me to mother your children!? Why not? Are you really my man or are you just here for fun!? I thought you loved me!”
”Elly, I do! But you know why. It's too dangerous in our line of work to have children, at least for right now.”
”Right now?! When is it going to be convenient for you?!”
”You're being irrational. If you get pregnant, you won't be able to go into the dungeon for at least a few years as long as you're nursing- and you're the best healer three villages over. You know that. Even if I could find someone to replace- would you really want me to risk my life for this treasure over and over? Besides- Elly- the real reason is I can't have any children without...”
”Without what, huh?”
”-Without passing on my curse. It wouldn't be right. I was born into the world saddled with my debt. My children would inherit it too.”
”Wha- When were you going to tell me this?!”
”That's the reason I've been keeping my distance from you..”
”But, I mean- there is no law of man that allows for passing debts from father to son- everyone knows that! Nobody in the village will allow it- they'll stand up for your children against any collectors!”
”It's not like that, Elly. It's a curse. The mark on my leg- I was born with it.”
”I thought it was a tattoo. That is no natural birthmark.”
”It isn't natural.”
”Oh- Oh please Jon, please just tell me what's going to happen to you- and to us!? We shouldn't have any secrets, please just tell me!”
”I will, but there is always the chance that I will die in the dungeon, and when that happens you and nobody else will be bothered by it anymore. Either that, or I'll have enough to pay off my debt for good. I'll tell you more about it later- I don't want to burden you.”
”Just tell me! I almost asked Nasir about your mark- I was so curious! You know how women are, Jon. I have to know!”
”I will tell you soon. I promise. Until then, I need you sharp and ready for our next delve...”

Over the rest of Winter and the early spring- few people could travel to the small village of Stoneshove. Even so, the amount of activity around the town, and the news of the very wealthy residents is spreading quick- carried on the back of the silver tub and the collector with his prize. But the chill and snow means that little travel is done at this time of year; Jon and Co have to consider who they are going to bring along for the next delve.

There are two people that they can hire for their next expedition. The first is the Hunter, who has returned since last year- and seems even more eager to be hired, perhaps because of the great wealth you have brought back since last time.

“I've been practicing. I can stick a bull's eye and split the arrow down the middle. Want me to prove it?- There's no better archer in a hundred leagues!”

The second is a Mercenary. He's one of the only people to have made it to the village over the past few seasons- but seemed drawn to the sound of treasure and plunder like a shark to blood. He's big, tall, and strong- and has even brought some of his own armor and equipment. He seems a trained fighter, but there are rumors he was once a member of a group of bloodthirsty bandits. Jon doesn't like his attitude or the way he looks at Elly, but he's still probably the best fighter you'll be able to hire for a long time- and given the increasing resistance the deeper you go, you may need him for the monsters beneath the mountain...

Who will you hire?

Also, just how big is Jon's debt?

I have a guess, by the way, of what it might be. Nasir said that mathematics and financing were teached to humans by DRAGONS. If the mark we're talking about is the 'Hoard' tattoo, my guess is that, for some reason, Jon is literally part of a dragon's "hoard" and he needs to pay off some gigantic debt to become a free man.

Either that or he tried to steal from a dragon and he needs to pay it off like that one 'Over the Hedge' movie.

Buy them both. If the Mercenary isn’t included, he’ll try and rob us when we leave the mountain. Bringing him into the group not only allows us to delve deeper, but prevents him from attacking us while we’re weakened and laden down with treasure.

Keep in mind, if we’re operating under the same combat rules, we can realistically sustain two party members under current voter count, three if you don’t mind losing people.
>>
>>5544848
He’ll also be tanking the monsters for us.
>>
>>5545307
Until he decides to push Snailman into their jaws, stab Jon in the face and run away with the treasure.

He wouldn’t know how to escape the mountain without us. Besides, he’ll ambush us instead afterwards. You think a rumored bandit would come all this way without getting a chance at riches? Better he contributes his fair share of the blood and labor instead of robbing us while we tired and bloodied.

Yes, and that implies that he can just magically know when we're walking out. We've got a hunter, he should be able to tell if the guy is like, five feet away from the entrance.
>>
>>5545818
Ah, apologies then, I’ll try to be more clear next time.

>>5545821
I mean, it won’t be that hard. He can probably just trap the cave entrance and ambush us.

What? The hunter isn’t psychic lad, and that assumes he won’t get Nasired into the mountain.
>>
>What? The hunter isn’t psychic lad,
He's a hunter, he should be able to tell if there is a living person ahead. You know, like a hunter.
>>
>>5545859
I'm not sure if the hunter has super-keen fantasy ranger senses. My boss at work goes hunting, but can still be surprised by people, you know?

Regardless, I'm one of the people who voted not to bring the merc because I'd rather face him as we exit than have his dangerous and disloyal keister right behind us at every potentially-deadly obstacle.
>>
>>5545818
Nearly been 8 hours now, apparently we’ve reached our voter limit. In such case, in two hours I resind my vote. I’m sorry for delaying the thread.

>>5545871
We have control of the order of battle, we could’ve put him in front to tank the hits, due to his armor and equipment. The merc would always be in the front, never the back.
>>
I'll just snap the tie breaker since nothing is breaking. Let's not take the merc. I know, he'll bite us in the back later. All I can suggest is to cope with whatever punishment is thrown our way.
>>
>>5546279
The risk is inherent regardless of the choice, I just think we’ll be able to delve deeper and get more loot with the Merc than without him, regardless of whether we decide to save his life or backstab him after.
>>
>>5546357
The difference is that it's much more dangerous to be backstabbed in the depths of the mountain when we're in the middle of a battle than when we expect him

Like i said, he could just stab snailman in the back when we least expected and run away with the money. If he has to face us off in a proper fight, that's still like 5 vs 1
>>
>>5546361
>The difference is that it's much more dangerous to be backstabbed in the depths of the mountain
Yea, for him? Remember how we got lost in the caves before, even with a local? He’s stuck down there if he tries to cut and run.

>If he has to face us off in a proper fight, that's still like 5 vs 1
Again, you’re assuming no one gets Nasired, and Elly ain’t fighting. At best we have 4 tired, wounded combatants forced to go though a checkpoint which may be trapped, against the Merc and whatever rabble he’s managed to recruit.

Well, clearly being ambushed in the way back home (maybe) is more dangerous than bringing the professional psycho to the dark deadly caves filled with traps and beasts.

I’ve gave up trying to reason with anon’s paranoia long ago, you just can’t reason with the overly emotional.

>>5546400
I see it less than a ‘maybe’ and more as a certainty, the Merc came here for riches, and riches he’ll get, even if he has to resort to banditry again to do it. For me, it’s about getting value outta the Merc before he tires to fuck us over.

Also, the Merc can’t escape without us leading him out of the cave system, the risk of betrayal while we’re fighting monsters is mitigated (i.e. the REAL maybe).
>>
Okay, I also vote for both the hunter and mercenary to come along.

Maximum drama, let's go!
>>
>>5546412
You said before
>If the Mercenary isn’t included, he’ll try and rob us when we leave the mountain
OR he may simply join another adventuring band. Or ambush a different group of explorers. It's not like we're the ONLY ones to come and go from the mountain.

In a place of evil magicks where anything can happen it's retarded to venture in with party members you cannot trust will watch your back. You guys rely too much on the idea that he'll act smart and cooperate while he's in the cave , but you forget he's a *bloodthirsty* ex bandit. "Reasonable" may not be in his language and he may try something stupid or even attempt to rape the waifu when the opportunity presents itself. Bringing this psycho along is like bringing a chaotic evil character that'll flip out at any moment even against his own (and ultimately everyone's) benefit. You don't want someone unstable in the team.
>>
>>5546412
>Also, the Merc can’t escape without us leading him out of the cave system,
He can just...go back the way we came? And monster fights are literally the biggest danger. Again, imagine if in the fight against those rats, he just threw snailman in the ground and ran off with the purse?

Or in the first del e, he could have easily stabbed Jon in the back, picked the gold and ran.
>>
>>5546414
Yes, wonderful, tie it back again, we don't need an update today either do we?
>>
>>5546462
We’re the only ones experienced enough to get the most loot, and everyone else has been slowed down by the snow.

>You guys rely too much on the idea that he'll act smart
And you rely too much on the rumor that he’s a bloodthirsty bandit and that Jon thinks he’s looking at Elly to much. He could easily just be a regular mercenary and Jon just overprotective of Elly. Not giving someone a chance because you’re suspicious that he’s going to do something derp stupid isn’t just illogical, by paranoid.

>>5546481
Did forget about the part where our party got lost in the caves? If he runs, he’s more likely to get himself killed than he is to get out- there are other monsters in this cave that he’d then have to fight solo. It’s paranoid silliness to think he’ll cut and run deep in an unknown cave filled with dangerous monsters by himself.

>>5546494
Hey, the two hour mark is up. I rescind my vote.

>Did forget about the part where our party got lost in the cave
Barely. We barely got lost, and returning is not that hard if you're keeping a mind on the layout. There's no reason to believe he couldn't just backstab the one person who might be able to fight him (snail) and then do something like taking Elly hostage.

Also, look at that fucking man. That is the shiftiest man i have ever seen. and Jon is obviously a former cutpurse, if anyone can recognize scum it's one of their own.
>>
>>5546552
We didn’t get barely lost- we definitively got lost. And there’s no reason to believe that he would just backstab us when we’re surrounded by fucking monsters, that’s just the paranoia talking.

Jon is the definition of an unreliable narrator, who is relying on local rumors and here-say (not anyone who really knows him beforehand), and is also overprotective of Elly. This guy could just be a normal mercenary from just that facts we know about him.
>>
>>5546562
He would backstab us because it's the easiest time, and only like one fight so far was severely dangerous. For an experienced fighter like him, it would be easy to stab snail in the back and either run away with the loot or take Elly hostage to get the rest to lead him to the surface.
>>
>>5546526
>>5546565
Keep in mind Jon doesn't feel that way about the Hunter so it's likely he's not just being overprotective of the waifu and is definitely catching on specific cues. In a matter of life-death expeditions it's silly to take gambles with people who fire up all your danger signals just to 'give them a chance', especially when there's other good alternatives.

It'd be nice to be able to ask the Merc about his background and read his dialogue before deciding if he's trustable enough to be hired.
>>
>>5546596
Do you NEED to task? Just take a look at the man. Look at him.
>>
>>5546565
Dude, we’re going deep in a mountain we just cursed further- and for an experienced fight, destroying unit cohesion in dangerous unknown territory is a pants-on head retarded idea.

>>5546596
Again, it based mostly on rumors and looks- not hard facts.

>It'd be nice to be able to ask the Merc about his background and read his dialogue before deciding if he's trustable enough to be hired.
Agreed, that would’ve been nice.

"Ayy, thank you lad for hiring me. Lotta folks your age wouldn't give me a second look because I'm an old man."
"No problem. We need people with high value skills."

You've decided to take along the Hunter, who real name is Young James, go figure. The mercenary, on the other hand, you don't bring along. You already have a big Snail, plus Richard and yourself as fighters, and with the Hunter's bow, that should be enough for now. Maybe if a bigger monster is found in the dungeon, you'll bring him along, but frankly you don't trust him. You wouldn't want a guy like him at your back.

"Grr... You haven't seen the last of me!"

Now with your party all set up over the winter, you finish your preparations with the blacksmith, who has finished repairing your armor and weapons. He's also finished a second coat-of-plates for Richard to wear.

"Nice armor, eh Elly?"
"Well, when you and Richard, you men, are done posing up with each other- can we get the other important tools ready too?"
"O-Oh, yeah! I didn't forget..."

Along with your repaired armor and weapons, you've also had several skilled tradesmen in the village produce new tools. You have an iron prybar, a bucket, sacks of cloth, strong rope, chalk, marbles, even parchment and ink for creating your first proper dungeon map. With your newfound wealth from the last delve, you're basically now tomb-robbing professionals, no longer just scavenging to get by!

Now there's just one last thing to tackle. Last time you entered the dungeon, you passed from the Mines into the Tombs, the second layer. The second layer was also haunted by a very nasty spirit- the spirit of a serial killer! The Shadow!

"I don't feel powerful enough to defeat that spirit permanently, Jon. I told you, I can only banish it temporarily."
"Yes, but we helped other spirits pass on permanently. The ghost of the miners- we resolved their trauma. Well, Elly did, mostly."
"I don't think this spirit suffers from much trauma. I think he mostly inflicts it. Even worse, it's an evil ghost. It knows its dead and inflicting harm; that's what it wants. No woman is safe walking through those tombs- indeed, I know it only attacks women as well. All of its victims are ghosts there too!"
"Hmm, well, we could take a detour there, poke around the tombs. After all, we didn't fully explore them. Maybe there's a way to banish him permanently? But would that be worth the risk and the time- I want to get to shoot a beeline to those caverns this time too."
"Well Jon, you've taken the lead. Wherever you go, I'm sure the rest of us will follow."

Hmmm, we'd need to end up banishing it again anyway...but if we take a detour, we'll possibly also end up seeing NASIR's ghost, and that's no good

...But as they make their way through the mines, Jon seems to perk up at something.

"Anybody feel... watched? Or is that just me."

The very old Young James perks his ears up- then knocks an arrow.

"Behind ya lad!"

Jon turns to find a giant spider creeping up on the party from behind. Normally an ambush predatory, this one seemed desperate enough to follow the sound of voices and the light of a torch.

"Ewww- No no no! Get rid of it!"
"Damn, that's no house spider! It's as big as me goat!"
"It's venom is its greatest danger- don't get bit!"

RULES
New combat rules. From now on, roll a d20 for a characters combat roll. This indicates how well they will in a combat; both for offense and defense. Characters with greater armor, for example, will be less likely to be harmed on lower rolls, where as characters with weaker or no weapons will deal less damage even with a high roll. You can roll by typing "dice+1d20" in the options field.

The group prepares for combat with the giant spider- thankfully only a solitary hunter this time; and not as stealthy as one would think.

>>5547684
Out of nowhere, Young James notches and arrow and winks an eye. "I'll show ye spoiled city folk how we deal with critters like this!"

Then, loosing the arrow, his bow strikes true and he splits the Spider's face- nasty yellow ichor pours from its wound as the giant bug crumples. Its legs still pulse and twitch in unnatural life for a short time even after it had been smote.

"Wow, nice shot!"
"I told ya so! Nobody is better with a Bow then yours truly. You made the right choice bringing me along."

The old man hunkers down by the twitching spider corpse, flicking a blade near its mandibles.

"What in the name of all that is good are you doing? You aren't seriously going to eat that thing?"

Young James rolls his eyes at the one-legged priest.

"No, ya grace. I'm going to extract its venom glands. Could be useful for later..."

Taking the ancient church and searching under the pulpit; the bolted trapdoor remains as you left it months ago. You open the door and travel down into the darkness beneath; right into a massive cave.

The caves are slightly damp and humid- the air is cool and the place is oppressively dark. You are in the underworld proper now; no more places crafted by human hands, no matter how long ago it may have been. The walls are made of smooth stone, worn and shaped by ages of water and other forces you do not understand fully.

"Young James, could you tell us what kind of creatures live in caves such as this?"
"Bats. Salamanders. Night-Creatures for sure."
"Bears?"
"Naw. Even a bear wouldn't sleep in a place like this for' the winter. No shell to curl up inside of, like your big felly'."

With that, the caves sprawl open ahead of you. Unlike the chambers above, this place is much more organic; the chambers are not organized by logical passages or a planned purpose- they are merely voids in the earth, with no rime or reason to them. The stalagmites and 'tites give everything an eerie shadow- like the jaws of a giant black beast just out of reach.

The chamber also stretches much higher up and down in places then the other levels above. It may be prudent to keep eyes places beyond the human eye-level. Either in the darkness yawning above, or the floor beneath?

While of course you have everyone in the party on high alert- especially in a dangerous place like this- you still want to give some extra attention and eyes to a certain area- and you pick to look above.

Jon & Elly spend extra time making sure nothing lurks in the darkness above you; creeping in the shadows of the stalactites. But eventually, it leads to a discovery. There is a black void on the ceiling in this chamber- a chamber that has a floor littered in large, unfitting stones, many of which have cracked as though hit with a great force.

"Oh! Look! I think this is the bottom of that hole we found above!"
"You mean the one we found in the mines, on our first trip?"
"Yes! Of course there is no way to know for sure, and no way in hell we could climb up from here; even with a lead we'd probably be too burdened with treasure. But it could be a useful shortcut the next time we come into the dungeon..."

It seems your understand of the organization of this place has grown. There was a mine which breached into an ancient tomb of the people who lived here very, very long- and that tomb was built atop an ancient cave system. Of course! With that in mind, the place can't possible go any deeper then this- after all, it's a cave. Possibly a place never explored by humans since the dawn of time.

"...I wonder how old these caves are."
"Hmm? Caves? Jon- they are just as the Gods left them at the creation of the world. I think you should know that."
"Yeah!"
"Well, yeah, but... what Age are we talking? The Age of the Stars? Age of the Moons? or the Age of the Sun? The world was not always the same since its founding. And there are even those, in some circles, who believe in a time before the Gods themselves..."
"Blasphemy!"
"I didn't say I believed it- it isn't a curse to speak a theory."
"Well, I don't know much about history, Jon. And if anything, you would know more with all your books. But I bet Nasir would-"

With a violent speed, Jon clapped his hand over Elly's mouth, a wide-eyed expression over his face.

"Shhh! Elly- don't speak that name- if you speak his name, it may... summon him."

Elly slowly nods that she understands; becoming infected by Jon's fright.. At the same time, Young James has stooped over something, and calls the others closer.

"Well- woulda look at that! Glowing shrooms! They only grow in really deep caves and caverns. Never seen them on the surface."
"Look at that glow- that looks like magic!"
"...Maybe we can eat 'em? Who wants to try?"
"Well- I can say that some cures and poultices call for rare mushrooms as ingredients for healing recipes... as well as stew recipes."
"Should we take some, Jon? I could give them a look."
"Perhaps, but we'd need to collect a bunch, and it may weight us down from carrying something more valuable..."

After some time in the caverns; it becomes clear that navigation is only going to become more challenging from here.

While the party has been doing a good job tracing their steps and leaving markings behind, as well as updating the map, it has only been a shared responsibility and not an exact science. Jon is frustrated at the lack of accurate information.

"Hold! Our map of this place is already bigger then the upper floors combined- haven't we walked for an hour with nothing of interest?"
"...Or "everything of interest" is keeping itself right away from the light of our torch."
"It feels that way, Jon."
"It's clear then. This place is huge, and much more complex then the simple tunnels and tombs built above, by human hands, with human minds..."
"We ain't lost, are we?"
"No, no. But I'm worried it could happen. Or simply be beyond our scope. All it would take for one wrong passage to get marked on here to screw us up good- maybe even make us travel in circles. It's imperative we get this right."
"Well Jon, they're your notes. You're the only one here who can read, right?"
"True, but it can't just be me. What if I die? Or get knocked out? We need someone in charge of navigation. Who is going to do it?"
"You!"
"Elly..."

The snail is already shaking his head no, he wants no part in this. Richard asks if we should go back and try a more thorough approach- dividing the chambers up by grid and square footage; but everyone knows it would be too slow and tedious to make any use of it. Young James volunteers, and as a natural guide, he may be the best- but this isn't his normal environment, and uniquely, the 3rd dimension may be at play, as some of these chambers may be higher or lower then the others, if the trickling water is any indication.

This will be a challenge. Who is clever enough for the task?

You've decided to put Young James in charge of your navigation from now on; and important skill. While he can't read or write, keeping track of landmarks and defining landmarks on the map is going to take someones full attention.

“Don't worry youngin' I got it all under control! Let me just see which way is north- Does moss grow on one side of the stones down here too? Oh, I know-”

He licks his finger and points it up to test of the wind. Jon sighs. He just hopes this isn't a mistake.

In the meanwhile, the others set to gathering up a big sack of the glowing mushrooms. Stuffing them into a large bag, they seep with glowing juices- and are surprisingly heavy. Elly does her best to prepare the herbs so they do not get too bruised up or damaged during the trip- but can't make any promises given how rough and tumble dungeonering can be. Still, it's a sack that won't be going towards being filled up with treasure.

After this, the party moves on through the caves, marking out locations and crosspaths, as well as trying to find dead ends. Always on the lookout for potential danger. Soon, the party comes across a side passage. The scent of water is stronger here, and with the sound of gentle trickling, they enter a small chamber.

It is round, with only one entrance or exit. The walls trickle with water- mini-waterfalls come from cracks in the stone, with glowing mushrooms peacefully growing along niches in the walls. The water itself pools in the stone, lazily flowing downwards to some yet unseen fathom. Some of the mushroomic spores have seemingly become part of the liquid here, a natural sanctuary, that gives the water its own silverish glow. The entire chamber is lit by this, a soft and subtle natural lighting. Even with the torch dying from the moisture, it is still possible to see, and even comfortable to rest your straining eyes. This is a place of natural beauty, only rarely seen.

”...This place feels special.”
“Aye.”
”I remember reading something about leylines, where powers converge in unseen ways. This feels like it could be one of those. A place of power.”
“I wouldn't know anything about that, but it seems a mit' bit special to me. There are places like it on the surface too, I've been there, but only ever far away. It feels like a place nobody has ever been but you. A special place.”
”...Let's enjoy the peace and quiet, shall we?”

With that, everyone is silent. They take a moment to rest. Elly, however, seems the most effected by it. She walks to the center of the circle and closes her eyes, wrapping her hands together as though in prayer. Something has taken ahold of her.

”Elly- are you ok?”
“Shh... leave her be, lad.”

Something is emerging from Elly's mind and spirit. It's a force seemingly inherent to all women- the feminine intuition. Buried down and malnourished, it is only now in a place like this such a thing takes hold. She feels it blossoming in her soul, an awakening of another sense deep from her core out to her extremities. It is not sorcery nor is it a sickness nor the work of any spirit- it comes from within her own self, awakening by the peace and serenity of this place. Much like this place, Elly just “is”.

But even in this moment of pure naturalistic growth- there is a choice. Elly feels her mind being pulled softly in two directions. The sensation of being just on the verge of understanding and feeling- but between two feeling. She is growing a sixth sense. But what does her sixth sense hinge upon?

Elly feels her senses, her ability to “feel”, effortless and intuitive, begin to focus on her friends. And her love. Elly has gained extraordinary senses and can now see auras of those she is familiar with.

Much like a shadow only she can see, a smell all others have become blind to, Elly now feels something “extra”. She opens her eyes and looks at them, her friends and acquaintances. With effort, she can “see” a force around them, an unspoken whispering, a shimmer, which represents the spirit within the flesh. Elly feels like she can only sense this aura because she knows each of them; Young James is mostly a stranger and his aura is the hardest to read, followed by Richard who she can feel stronger. She is quite excited at first, as this place has awoken some preternatural ability inside of her, but when she looks at Jon, she feels a surge of concern.

”Oh Jon... Why didn't you tell me?”
”Huh? Elly- what's wrong? What happened? You got quiet for a minute.”
”Jon- your heart is bleeding. You must be in such pain. Please let me help you, Jon. By all the Gods and Stars above- I can't believe I couldn't see it before!”
”Elly-! What are you talking about?! Haha, I'm fine, same as always!”

Elly knew he was lying. She could see it now; the distortion around his aura. The great burden and inner pain- she could feel it. Jon is tormented- his aura more heavy and dark then anyone else. Elly has to do something!

”Jon, you need to tell me what's wrong. You are under such a burden beyond just money- you're still in pain- you must tell me! Let me help you! No more secrets!”
”Elly... A-Alright. I'll tell you everything...”
>>
Somehow, able to cut through to his core and see underneath his skin, Jon felt exposed before Elly. The group takes a break, and Jon and Elly have some privacy in the special place. They snack on some of their supplies they brought with, and Jon tells Elly everything.

”It all started with my great-grandfather. He was a lord... the Lord of Blackwater.”
”Then... then you must be of noble blood!”
”I am, but the family had fallen into nothing in this present time- now it is only me...”

Elly truthfully isn't surprised. Jon was always taller, more handsome, greater then the other men around him. Animated by some energy beyond the average wife-beating thug or humble salt of the earth type; Elly would love him either way but... hearing his is noble, his bloodline chosen by the Gods in some ancient past? It's a nice surprise.

”So what happened to the family? And what is this debt?”
”I'm getting to it. My Great-Grandfather fought in a long and terrible war. He was a great warrior, but wars are ultimately not decided by iron-”
”-But by gold.”
”Exactly. He was fighting to save the people from a great invasion- and he had run out of all funds he could muster. All his allies were penniless too, defending their own lands, and he needed to borrow a great sum of wealth. So he only had one option left... Borrowing from a Dragon.”
”A D-Dragon! But I thought dragons would rather burn a whole village then let a thief run away with a single gold coin from their hoard. They're the most greedy creatures in the whole world!”
”Aye. They are supposed to be- so I have no idea how he managed to convince the beast to part with some of its hoard- but it did. And it gave him one hundred years to pay it back. My Great-Grandfather ultimately won the war- but at a great cost. He was destitute, and his allies turned their backs on him. He saved up every scrap he could, but the dragon was tricky, and put interest on the loan that made it even harder to pay off- eventually he died before he could pay it back like he wanted. And then, it passed to his children. That is what the mark on my leg means- it passes by the blood, the dragon's fetter.”
”...That's devilry. No man can suffer from the sins and debts of his father. That's inhuman.”
”It wasn't a human who issued the loan. Each generation has been more and more weakened by the burden- falling apart- from the Lord of Blackwater to a common street thief. That's the end of the “noble line”. Me.”
>>

”...So what happens when time is up?”
”If there is one thing in the world dragons love more then gold, it is revenge. To default on the debt, would bring terrible anger. It would mean the absolute destruction of the debtor- and his kin- and the kin of his kin. By fire.”
”B-But, it's not you! You're not him!”
”To a creature like that, I might as well be! I've never seen or known anything about this dragon, but it knows me. To me, I'm the same as my ancestor. We're humans. We grow old and die in the blink of an eye compared to ageless creatures. By the time the dragon wakes from its slumber, I will look and smell as close to my great-grandfather that I may as well be the same. I'd probably be at the same social level and working the same profession too- that's how the world works. Individuals don't matter to immortals.”
”Jon.. I didn't- I didn't know. It's so horrible to be born with such a curse.”
”I have already accepted it. It is my burden. But you... I don't want you, or our child, to suffer the same fate. That is why I was so hesitant to marry you, and why I didn't want you to get pregnant. If I did get you pregnant, our child would be born with the same mark- they wouldn't even have time to grow up before the dragon came to extract its payment.”
”Oh Jon... but what about the money you've been saving? Every scrap of gold and silver you have so far- it must be a fortune!”
”Come on, Elly. Did you really think the dragon ever intended its loan to be possible to pay back? Even in several generations? No- this is a death sentence. But I haven't given up hope. That's why I've been delving into this cursed mountain- despite the danger and despite how little I care for riches and gold. At the current rate, I'll never have enough, but if each level of the dungeon is richer and richer still-”
”...Then at its deepest place, there may be something so valuable that even a dragon's debt could be paid off?”
”Exactly. I'm sorry I never told you, Elly. But that's the whole truth...”

With their break adjourned, the party continues to explore the caverns. Not long after, they end up walking down a long tunnel with only a few narrow cracks and crevices to the sides- and then they hear something approaching.

“Shh- hear that?!” YJ says, his fine senses picking it up. Everyone becomes quiet- and they hear the loud sounds of voices and metal clanking.

”Oh! Could there be people down here too?!”
”...It must be that mercenary we didn't take with us last time. I really didn't want to run into him down here...”
”How do you know it isn't something else- a monster? A cacophony of spirits?”
“Come now lad- what dim-witted monster of the mountain or animal of the deep earth can forge armor and talk in many voices? What else could possible live here with such intelligence? It can only be a group of human beings.”
”...Now I'm not so sure. We can dowse the torch and hide.”
“Fool! If you creep around in the darkness when they come, they'll discover us laying in wait for them- when they bring their light. They'll think we be highwaymen and robbers! That's not a good first impression.”
”But they are be a bunch of highwaymen and robbers!”
”I mean, we don't have anything to rob yet... just a bunch of mushrooms.”
“Besides, if we greet them all nice-like, we might be able to team up. Or at least trade information. If they tell us what they found that way, we could save a lot of time on our exploration!”
”Yeah, and if they aren't friendly, greeting them just means we're sitting ducks.”
”I can feel their march through my peg leg. Last chance to make a decision.”
”Jon- quick! What do we do?!”

We can always step out and greet if the approaching clank is a smaller group then ours; we can't go back into hiding if it's a big armed group or some approaching monster.

Instead of creeping around like thieves, you decide to greet your fellow explorers. Doing so would avoid any bad blood between you.

As the noise approached, you cleared your throat, stepping out into the dark caverns. You make sure not to have your weapons drawn- and try to put on your best smile. "Hello-"

Wait, why are they walking in so much darkness anyway? Where is there torch? Suddenly, you hear a lot of grunting, sputtering, confusion, and oinking- and glowing red eyes.

Oh shit.

"MEN!?"
"ORCS?!"

There's twenty of them, maybe a bit more, slinking around in the darkness. They don't need lights to see down here; their eyes make their own light- the glowing hateful red eyes of the orcs. They are armed, have armor, and are all big, strong creatures. Even two or three would be a match for Snailfriend. There is zero chance to even fight back. Meaty hands are on your sword in an instant, and a thick fist in Jon's gut, stunning him, as the others are quickly surrounded.

"Urk- Jon-!"
"Get your fucking... filthy... disgusting- nasty- pig-fucking hands off her!"
"What's wrong 'Umie boy? Worried Imma fuck your woman? Hehe. She's a little too skinny- and yuck- so much hair. It'd be like fucking a ghoul. No thanks. You lot! Take these ones back to the God-Speaker. He'll know what to do with 'em!"

The orcs have captured you. Even Snailfriend, in all his strength, has no chance against half a dozen orc warriors all by himself. They take your weapons and bind your hands, and begin the march through the caverns as your torch sputters and dies out on the ground.

While you cannot see in such absolute darkness- the orc's eyes and hands guide your steps. Even the slight glow from the orcish eyes is enough to illuminate the chamber just enough to see that they're taking you away.

You've made one mistake already- now its time to plan ahead. You've got to find a way to get out of this situation, but how? These orcs aren't likely to let you go anytime soon, and you can't exactly win in a straight up fight...

>Plan an escape the moment you're left alone
>Try to get chummy with the orcs

The orcs are taking you away now.

"Aww, come on you fat- err- honorable warriors! This is all just a.. big misunderstanding!"
"You intrudin' humies! Whatcha think you doing down here, in our caves!?"
"We didn't know it was your cave! Not even from the smell!"
"Shut up! Spoiled surface-dweller, used to fresh air, living under yer' precious stars. Get walking!"

Jon tries his best to smooth over things; but its clear that that isn't going to work. Maybe you could be friends with the orcs if you weren't... a bunch of humans. And had something to give them. Anything other then this situation, basically. Its clear from Jon's voice that he doesn't like the orcs either- which isn't helping either.

Despite the fact your torch died way back there- you can somehow see. It's dim and dark, but your eyes have adjusted to the darkness of the caves somewhat; the tiny luminescent mushrooms, the water infused with whatever elements of the earth, and the glowing eyes of the orcs. They are taking you far off the path you know- and into the darkness of the caverns. YJ, as an experienced guide and the navigator of the group, tries his best to remember your path to find your way back. The orcs didn't seem clever enough to blindfold you when taking you back to their leader...

The attitude of the orcs is almost jovial. They aren't as hostile and monstrous as most of the stories say; at least for now. These ones may be the exception rather then the rule. But you still wouldn't trust them, and you don't think they'd be very gracious hosts... Which is all the reason why you need to come up with a plan to escape!

The orcs take you back to their camp. Situated in an off-shoot of the cave system, this part seems less wild and a little more homely. You can tell the various creatures and monsters on this layer of the dungeon don't come by here once the orcs started living there. The orcs put you in cages made of iron bars, driven straight into the rocky cave walls- no wood for crafting things down here.

Soon enough, you meet the orcs leader. He is certainly the oldest among them, though his actual age in human years may be a mystery- orcs don't live that long compared to humans; so he's probably younger then Young James, but certainly, he looks and sounds much more ragged and old. His body is stretched and scared with battle and wounds- and yet a certain strength still pervades him. His form is adorned with uncut gemstones taken from the earth, washed and cleaned free of dirt, but not yet given the shape of a sophisticated, civilized hand.

"We found 'em wandering around the caves. Near the place where we get water."

The old orc looks you all over, before stopping on Richard. Jon sizes him up- he knows the party could hold him hostage for the rest of the orcs- or if he's injured somehow, use the distraction to get their weapons at least...

"You- that symbol around your neck... You share the same sign as that tomb of the dead above. Do you think yourself a holy man?"
"Holier then you, beast."
"Silence! You will cast off that heathen symbol and give your offerings to the lord of this place- our All-Mighty Abazuzu!"

What should Richard do?
>Go along with the Old Orc
>Use his secret knife-leg and make an attempt to escape
>Spit in his face
>>
And would you look at that, i was right again...either way, i don't think using his secret leg would help, we are completely surrounded by these orcs and they're pretty strong. Spitting in his face would just lead to him getting murdered.

So uh, nice job there, richard now has to cast off his symbol and possibly lose his spiritual authority.

>Use his secret knife-leg and make an attempt to escape

Yes, wonderful, go and kill the quest on purpose by suiciding all the characters, that's great.

I think i can see why people were voting stupid now, you actually *want* to kill the quest.
>>
>>5561356
I actually don’t- though I do find it interesting that the one time we decide to trust the sole local ranger of the group we get insta-captured.

I’m just voting how I feel Richard would respond, knowing he faces death- I choose my strange local gods over this All-Mighty.
>>

>though I do find it interesting that the one time we decide to trust the sole local ranger of the group we get insta-captured.

>I’m just voting how I feel Richard would respond
By sacrificing the entire group? Now richard dies, the others are left in an orc encampment filled with an fucking army worth of giga-strong orc soldiers who now hate them because we tried to kill their holy leader.

In the same moment; Jon has been making plans to escape this situation and the orcs, as well as scanning the surroundings. Then he sees it- the carving.

Carved into the cavern wall; a rough carving of a god-like figure, obviously made by the orcs own hand. While its hard to tell, the lack of mineral growth and lichen implies it is new- just a few years old. But the most interesting feature to Jon is on the carvings head. The centerpiece- a massive gem. As big as a cow's heart. It sparkles in the darkness, almost as though it is so luminous that it gives off its own light. This could be the next great treasure he seeks- but first he has to get out of this mess.

Jon considers what will happen based on whatever Richard chooses...
>Go along with the Old Orc (Richard loses spiritual authority, Orcs may become neutral)
>Use the Knife-Leg (Everyone runs, chance for each person to be caught and die)
>Spit in his face (Richard suffers a horrible fate while everyone else gets a chance to escape)
>>
>>5561422
Thank you for explaining the options- that’s actually an improvement over some QMs who would rather keep the options obscure and let anons get a false impression on what they were actually voting for.

I knew that going along with the Old Orc was the best play, and that it would probably lead into the diplo-build we had chosen, and if this were Jon, I’d vote for it in a heartbeat. This is Richard- the man who, after having his leg bitten off, still decided that he’d rather brave the mountains with his peg leg than commit to the sensible option of retiring and staying with his family.

My vote doesn’t change, come what may.

>>5561372
Trusting the local hunter was a judgment based on his experience- it wasn’t unreasonable to try and make friends in this dungeon, nor was it unreasonable to assume that it was another adventuring party instead of a warband of orcs.

>By sacrificing the entire group?
I’m not saying it’s the right choice- in fact it will fuck everything up. But I do think Richard would stand by his convictions in his local faith rather than abandon them- come what may. I do understand that it puts everyone in a bind and may crash the quest- I’m just voting with gut.

I think some uncertainty is appropriate in a situation like that. We don't need percentages. It takes away from the adventure.

That depends on how the QM handles this situation. I personally think, when a party wipe is on the table, that we deserve to make an informed choice on it. I believe in transparency on important decisions.

Up close and personal with the old orc, Richard steps his foot forward and twists it in just such a way- and the blade is revealed. With a quick kick aimed at the old orc's most sensitive region- he gets him around there- maybe the inside of the thigh, and the big shaman clutches himself in pain. The cage doors were open at that time; and you begin to run.

"Go! Go!"

The orcs crowd around their leader in concern for a second, before he slaps them away.

"After them, swineheads!"
"Ack- My bow!"
"Leave it! Go go!"

Without any weapons; the party must make a retreat in near total darkness away from the orc camp- following along only on a whim. Thankfully, the orcs did not take away their packs or tools- only disarmed them. Snail-Friend gives Jon a dirty look for getting his sword taken away- but they have no room to fight. Only to run.

"D-Don't wait for me! If they catch me, they catch me!"
"Richard, no! Hurry!"
"My bad leg- argh!"

Rules
Every character must roll a 4, 5, or 6 to successfully escape. Richard is slower on his peg leg and is the one the orcs want the most- he must get a 5 or 6 to survive. Roll a 1d6 for each character. You can roll by typing "dice+1d6" in the options field.

The group runs away. As fast as their legs take them. Despite knowing these caves worse then the orcs who live here- the party moves fast in a way that the orcs can't seem to keep up with. Only Richard seems to be slower then the rest; and with their help he manages to get away too. Soon enough, you all arrive back at the hole that leads up to the chapel.

"Just... catch our breath, then... ahh... get the ladder..."
"How could we see on our way back? I don't understand..."
"It was them shrooms lass! Look, the ambient light they give off is gentler then the fire of a torch. The juices on your hands and dress are casting off a bit too- see!"
"Eww..."

While a great sense of relief washes over the party- Jon knows it isn't over yet. He feels a sensation of dread; he knows they have to go up now- through the tombs and the mines- with no weapons. Without even a chance at fighting back now- the party must be extra careful and cannot stay in the dungeon- this trip is a wasted effort. No treasure will be brought back... But everyone managed to survive their first encounter with those who live below...

The party makes their back home through the treacherous tunnels- this time with their sack of mushrooms as their main source of light. Thankfully, they seemed to have made enough noise on their way in to scare off any trouble, and are coming back quick enough before things get curious... or hungry.

"...I wonder how long Ghouls take to have babies."
"Eww- that's disgusting lass! I hope you weren't taking what the orcs said at face value..."
"Wha- No! Gross! I just mean that, if they were all dead... were do new ones come from? Do they have babies- and how long would they take to grow? If they're like humans- then shouldn't this place be clean of them for at least ten years or more?"
"Ghouls are supernatural creatures, lass. They aren't tied to flesh and blood like a proper, wholesome critter like a rabbit or a bird. Some say they were once people driven mad by hunger, or some saw they simply crawl their way out of gravesoil, fully formed and evil."
"...So this place will never be fully safe? No matter how many things Jon and the Snail kill?"
"...Not until the curse is lifted."

Jon is silent. The weight of this failed expedition weighs on him harder then anyone. Elly may feel his pain and know his struggle, but it feels like a waste. They're all happy they got an adventure and nobody dies- but he knows this is a failure on his part as the leader. He's the one driving this whole expedition; and if anyone was captured or killed by the orcs- it would have been his fault. And now, he knows that the orcs will be and continue to be another obstacle in his path.

But just then, he hears something. His feet feel heavy and the hair on the back of his neck stands up. The darkness of the tomb is overwhelming him.

"...Jon."

Thank you all for playing Beneath the Moaning Mountain! While it didn't quite work out the way I wanted it to, especially with the dice rolling and running out of steam at the end there, I hope you stuck around and enjoyed it enough.

Here's the archival link- https://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/2023/5517237/

I wanted to make a quest to explore some interesting fantasy elements and worldbuilding a bit different then the norm; with a greater focus on folklore with a lower overall power level. Unfortunately we didn't get into the real meat and potatoes of magic or breaking curses, and our monsters were pretty simple (and the combat had its flaws) but I ended up liking the direction it went overall.

Let me know what you think about it. While I originally had planned to continue this quest far beyond this first thread it didn't feel quite as fun and rewarding as I thought, partially do to interest dropping midway and for other reasons too. Anyway, thanks for playing and let me know if you'd like to continue it at some point. I'll stick around to answer any questions you may have.
>>
>>5563452
Thanks for the thread, and i'd definitely like it if it continued.

Was there actually a plan to let Jon accumulate enough money to pay off the debt, or is it just an 'you need to get to the last room in the final chamber with him alive' thing?
>>
>>5563452
Thank you for the Quest. I enjoyed it, and would definitely play again if you decided to continue. And hey, even if you decide this is the end of Jon and Ellie's own adventuring career; another party could brave the mountain at some later date...
>>
>>5563523
> And hey, even if you decide this is the end of Jon and Ellie's own adventuring career
Ehhh, if he continues the quest, why would it be another party? Jon can't stop, he has to continue until he gets enough treasure for the dragon or else he gets turned into human barbecue
>>
>>5563452
I enjoyed it quite a bit. I do wish anons were a little less demanding at times, and I hope that wasn't what sapped your motivation. If it continues, I'll be there! Thabk you for running it.
