It has been 100 years since ancient beings, known as the Old Ones, walked the Earth with their two strong feet. Now they are gone and we animals now rule the remains that they left behind. With our new knowledge of sword and sorcery, we were able to survive in peace for a while, but then came the three factions.
The Apes: Strong giants, claiming to be as just as the old ones and believe they should be the ones to rule over the new world.
The Pigs: An intellectual but slothful group who wish to rule the world with an iron hoof and remain kings while the others remained as dumb animals.
Then there the Lizards: A fast and large group that want to set the world a blaze. Trying to forget the harsh past that the old ones left.
All three sides wishing to go war and destroy one another to bring in what they believe to be true peace.
But, unbeknownst to everyone, there was another group. One that was trying their best to find a way to heal everyone. To bring back order.
You found it.... and now you are taking care of it.

A D&D Homebrew Adventure.

>The Owlbears stare at you.
>Screeching softly.
>Ready to strike for you they all try to stare you down.
>The one on the left seems to have trouble staring at Mog.
>It soon switched it's focus on the other two.
>They soon slowly walk to the right avoiding the bright light and approach the prey in the more darkened area.
Kinny it is your turn.
>>
>>5665228
Okay, so since we have time before Mog hops in, I'm going to ask a couple of technical questions:
>If I hide on this turn and then attack on this same turn, will the attack reveal me to the owlbears?
>If I throw the lightning dagger at the closest of the owlbears, will the lightning strike at the copper shield instead? Asking for the current map situation exclusively.
If anything is unclear, just ask
>>
>>5665242
>If I hide on this turn and then attack on this same turn, will the attack reveal me to the owlbears?
Did this once with my own DM and he said yes, I would be revealed once I attack on the same turn.
>If I throw the lightning dagger at the closest of the owlbears, will the lightning strike at the copper shield instead? Asking for the current map situation exclusively.
If it hits your opponent then I say you are good and you hit only the owlbears, although if you miss then it might hit Mog.
>>
>>5665243
Okaay, and is the metal container like a regular shipping container? I was wondering if I can throw one of the daggers and then hop on it and use it as a hiding spot... although it looks like owlbears are taller than shipping containers o-0
>>
>>5665257
They are Large Monstrosities but they are probably the same size as Ursus. Maybe a tiny bit bigger.
>>
>>5665262
Ursus is like 7.5ft. That makes them about the height of a shipping container, could work.
But what about the metal shipping container on the map? Is it a shipping container or just some metal box?
>>
>>5665269
Yes. Made mostly out of steel.

"Ah shit, he brought friends and family!" Kinny cursed on the current state of affairs. He couldn't do much here that wouldn't start a fire or potentially endanger Mog's or his own fabulous fur. Thinking quickly, Kinny pulled out one of his old, perfectly unassuming daggers and threw it behind the closest owlbear's back, as to distract him and give his companions some advantage. The rogue then skittered to the huge metal container and clawed his way on the top of it, assuming a pancaked position to hide himself from the prying eyes of the grotesque predators.
>Rolling Dex to throw regular dagger (1/2) behind the owlbear to avert its attention from the group. Ideally also get the others' attention

I was actually here 38 minutes before Ursus posted during some late night browsing but I figured he wouldn't be around for another 5 hours. So I just went back to sleep.

>>5665228
Ah, I see, they are adverse to bright light. Standing near the fire is actually good for us, or at least being backlit by it. Throwing some flame daggers would also be advantageous I think. Not like we live in this forest anyways.
>>
>>5665309
Forgive me I am very off today.
>>
>>5665309
To be fair, he was probably confused on why you thought throwing a regular dagger would distract the owlbears when they already sense prey. It isn't like throwing a rock near an NPC from around a corner in a video game. Though good rolls solve all issues and you rolled well, so I dunno?

I treat it like video game for the purpose of keeping my sanity and getting some enjoyment out of it. And if you're gonna go into details about senses and what not...
>turns in D&D take a few seconds of real time
A sudden noise from the bushes as metal hits the stone could distract those glorified mice-grinders for those few seconds, giving you a turn of opening.
>>
>>5665321
True. Though in 2nd edition I think turns were a minute long each.

Maybe Ursus had something come up, or maybe he was posting just before sleeping or something. He should be around eventually, he usually is around this time give or take an hour or two. We know he knows the new thread is up and the session is today.

Mog understood immediately. Their mad dog stares, averted gazes when they tried to glance his way. It wasn't his intimidating majesty, it was the flames. Best keep the flames close, but not too close.

It was tempting to fling a flame dagger their way, scare them off. But no, they weren't packed tight enough to be worth it and they'd just be back another night if they weren't finished here.

Prying a javelin free of his pack, the paladin hurled the steel shaft high into the air, the projectile arcing down towards the left-most owlbear, a rabid howl invoking the Goddesses' wrath following it from Mog's throat.

>Move 20 feet north so I'm in range for a javelin without disadvantage.

I vaguely remember it being called a sword in some prior thread, but I could be mistaken. The frostbane in this game probably has no relation to any number of other fantasy weapons called frostbane in any number of other franchises or OC works.

We can't afford to hold back, this should be a moderately challenging fight. Each one has 59 HP, easily manageable when it is 3vs1 but with 3 on the field it will probably take a full turn or more if we each focus them down one by one. Meanwhile they can potentially kill each one of us in 1 turn. I'd use your thrown lightning daggers if I were you, just be careful not to strike one near me, lest you fry me.

I searched all posts that mentioned Frostbane and didn't see it being referred to as anything. In my mind it was also a sword, but I went looking for source material, which I found none of. Instead there was a third-party page I found for Frostbane that looked great and like it was taken straight out of D&D book so I went with it.

"T-ten point landing Kinnster." Mog said in between hacking out his lungs from all the smog and tar in the air.

Getting up is movement, not an action I think, so no you're fine, I think it just takes half your movement to get up. Einstein is in your pocket so he might be fine, if not then a quick sip of a healing potion or my healing will bring him back up as long as we do it soon.

There was a snap-hiss of supersonic shrapnel and a soft 'whumpf' as it impacted. Mog wasn't sure if he'd been hit at first. Then he felt it, it felt like he'd been punched, then a sharp pain from the middle of the numb area. He kept moving.

"Yeah, I'm on it Kinny, back me u-oouh..." Mog started to say as he turned to run after the cowardly freak of nature. Then his vision started swimming and his balance left him. He remembered the sight of maple leaves as his vision whirled like waves and he fell sideways into unconsciousness.

Maybe also call for Maggie before you do, just in case it KOs you, that way we have a backup plan where the NPC saves us.

It is fine, I wanted the potion. I just thought you had something else in mind after joking about leaving. Taking the question seriously though, if Ursus was still down hypothetically, then you could do as I mentioned and pop a invis potion and then heal us. Alternatively you could go get Maggie. If you wanted to fight the owlbear then you could climb a tree and throw daggers at it. You could also try and lure it away with some food or something. Since this is a TTRPG you have lots of options that can't be done in a more restrictive format like a video game.

Sound and sight came back to Mog just as the heavy impact of the owlbear hitting the forest floor sounded out.

Drawing his sword in alarm he stood up, only to come face to butt with Ursus. Looking around he took in the situation, then sheathed his sword.

Doing a full circle he saw Kinny prancing about with a bottle in paw. He walked over to give him a lick or two.

"Thanks for the save buddy, again." He said, somewhat bashfully. That was twice now he owed Kinny his life

Unlike in older edition of DnD, 5e uses weird rules called death saves. We roll a flat d20 and if it is 10 or above we get a success, below and we get a fail. Nat 20 revives us, getting three successes means we are stable and not dying but unconscious, three fails means we die. If the owlbear attacked one of us then it would merely give us two fails on a death saving throw instead of outright killing us, with multiattack it could outright kill us, but it was probably still blinded, so it would have disadvantage. Like I said though, your action was fine, I actually prefer it. No worries.

>>5665652
Seeing Ursus collapse Mog went over right away and lay a gentle paw on his forehead. Pale moonlight emanated from his paw and his ministrations took hold. Threads of light knitted the bear champion's wounds back together, slowly but surely.

On whether we should continue? Well we did make around 200 posts. Plus the put to sleep thing was going to be used as a to be continued. Plus a chance for all of you fully heal up for the next session. But would you all like to continue? Because personally I am fine with stopping for today and letting all of you level up.
>>
>>5665707
Nah, on Einstein.
>>
>>5665691
No worries, usually leveling up is done after the session proper is over, otherwise we'd be wasting play time. Only thing to know is your subclass selection, personally I don't think Thief subclass is very good, I'd either pick Assassin or the Arcane Trickster subclass for magic. The Assassin's features have a peculiar way they work that people often misunderstand, I'll explain it later when we aren't still playing.

>>5665697
Take care.

>>5665698
"Owlbears happened. Would've been fine if the oil barrel hadn't exploded. One got away, shame, could've used the meat." Mog patiently explained.

Before he could explain further animals came frolicking out of the woodwork. A provocative accusation later and some magic tree-hugging druid like El-Reed was always whining about was throwing rose petals at him. Sleep tugged at Mog's eyes.

Do we get a roll to resist? Normally spells like this can be resisted, yes?

>>5665700

>>
>>5665707
I am on a milk run so my phone may die
>>
>>5665707
Would prefer to continue. Ursus should be back in a bit. We have plenty of healing potions and there is the short/long rest system that would've let us heal anyways without suddenly being instantly KOed.
>>
>>5665698
>>5665711
Though, I suppose we wouldn't get to resist if it was the sleep spell. But then they wouldn't be able to move us without waking us, plus not all of us would be in the 20 feet range in all likelihood, and we probably have more HP than can be successfully put to sleep. But I guess I'm being pedantic, could just be a story beat spell, or multiple castings of sleep or some other spell I guess.
>>
>>5665709
>>5665698
Einstein said he was fine he just puked.

>>5665711
Usually Sleep is done by rolling 5d8 (more d8s added with higher spell slots) and it representing HP. Putting to sleep creatures in the area within the number rolled by lowest to highest. But you guys are very weak at the moment and I would rather you all not use all the potions you just got.
>>
>>5665720
Fair enough, like I said, even if the caster didn't get all of us, they could just do multiple castings.

In the future though I personally would be against being suddenly snuck up upon without any chance of noticing them, or being ambushed and knocked out without rolling initiative or getting to resist. Regardless of the benign intent, it is annoying as a player to have control taken away from us and it feels like railroading or "railroading" at the best of times. Particularly when these NPCs seem like they are gonna be mad at us and demand apologizes and explanations and reparations, egotistical players chafe harshly at such things, even humble players do at the best of times and I'm certainly not one of those most of the time. We would've been able to recover with a short/long rest anyways, no potions needed. No matter though, what's done is done.
>>
>>5665691
Anyways, as I was gonna explain earlier the assassinate feature says "Starting at 3rd level, you are at your deadliest when you get the drop on your enemies. You have advantage on attack rolls against any creature that hasn’t taken a turn in the combat yet. In addition, any hit you score against a creature that is surprised is a critical hit."

Many new players or even veteran players mistake this or deliberately houserule this to mean that; among other interpretations, you have surprise on anyone who can't see you thus allowing you to cunning action hide constantly and then get advantage on anyone who you act before in initiative each turn and that you automatically crit anyone who is surprised. There are other interpretations like some people thinking you get auto-crits on anyone you have advantage on and other such misunderstandings.

It actual ability has been clarified by the devs to be SIGNIFICANTLY worse than these fan interpretations, not to mention the plain text doesn't lend itself to those explanations anyways even if it isn't very clear. First, surprise isn't a very clear condition like in prior editions aside from a small section on page 189/190. You can only get surprise on the start of the first turn if you succeed a stealth check and beat their perception. Thus you only get those auto-crits ONE time at the start of the battle, and you have to still hit. FURTHERMORE, the advantage only applies to creatures who haven't taken ANY turn at all in the battle, not people you act before each round, but those who haven't taken a turn at all in the battle. Meaning you have to beat them in initiative AND only get the advantage at the start of the battle.

Assassinate is the core feature of the Assassin subclass, go figure. It's something players want to love, but rules as written it sucks. The bonus proficiencies with disguise and poison kits is neat though, the later features regarding disguise are meh, Thief is likewise meh but okay for mobility. We'll have to get QMs word for if he is willing to use a more generous interpretation of the feature if you choose it. >>5665720

Personally I think taking Arcane Trickster is the best option.

I will absolutely burn these tribals with their forest if given a chance. How dare they fucking 'arrest' us after they've seen us get almost murdered by the monsters they themselves did nothing to eradicate? And shouldn't they be more concerned with putting out THE FIRE? They just sent half a forest to stop EIGHT of us, 5 of which are small animals, but they couldn't move a fucking explosive barrel out of the forest or kill/tame owlbears? Me, Kinny and I think that the correct course of action here is to enact the gameplay of Ultrakill upon these savages.

>You have advantage on attack rolls against any creature that hasn’t taken a turn in the combat yet
Yeah, it says no turn in combat, not action per turn. Only a dumbfuck could misread this. But then again I'm a dumbfuck and still can read it.
>Surprise
Well, that is clearly different than "advantage" and therefore its own status... and google straight up says it can only happen at the start of the combat. Idk how can anyone get this wrong, lmao.
Man, what a load of shit. No wonder people play custom rules instead.
>>5665754
Oh ffs why can't I read patiently. Well, if you take that into account, it only makes it worse. They aren't just dumb hippies, but actual braindead npcs who would sit on their ass while we got slaughtered by their iron golems. But now, that we emerge victorious, they pop their ostrich heads out of the sand and come at us with backhanded tricks while mumbling something about crimes. *cracks knuckles*
>>
>>5665754
Oh fuck, they did, honestly fuck these guys. (well they called them friends, but same difference) Yeah, far as I'm concerned we owe these guys nothing.

Or Mog might be a bit contrite about the fire, but they kinda interrupted us before we could do anything about it, I was gonna start putting it out afterwards. Even if I took Oath of the Ancients, as I said, I was aiming for a muddier version of it and IC his beliefs have little to do with individual acts of destruction regarding nature where souls aren't involved, more of a big picture kinda thing in regards to nature, but there's no industry around to provoke any kind of anger of that sort of thing.

>>5665750
Yeah, it'll take a bit of convincing before Mog is chill with these folks, even if they are possibly enemies of the apes.

>>5665707
I think I'm gonna put my Ability Score Improvement from level 4 into CON, so I retroactively gain 2 max HP. I'm also gonna take the default HP improvements instead of rolling, so plus 6 HP for both my level ups. Thought about doing a split of 1 into STR and 1 into WIS, but I think I'll do that next ASI. Not sure on my Oath yet, a tossup between Oath of the Ancients and Oath of Vengeance.
>>
>>5665762
Houses rules are usually for the best. Though to be fair, 5e and to a degree 4e are imho the worst editions, for a whole host of reasons I won't get into ranting about.

I already hate these guys, El-Reed was right, Druids suck.

What does the Ability Score Improvement refer to?
I kinda feel bummed out on a rogue flavor-wise (nothing dramatic, just feels meh). Magic users sound like they have lots of fun stuff baked into mechanics. Maybe I can get something interesting going on with those 3 bottles I have. Probably not but worth a try.
>>5665769
Damn, where can I subscribe for your D&D rants? I would soak them in like a sponge in the middle of a desert.

>>5665720
QM?
>>
>>5665798
Ability Score Improvement refers to your Attributes. So stuff like, strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma.

Most of my ranting would be the same milquetoast rants that every veteran DnD fan is familiar with about how 4e wasn't as balanced as its fans say it is and about how it is too boardgamey, or how 5e has been out for however many years and still lacks a so called "splatsplosion" and thus how ever many years on we still lack anywhere near the customization we had in 3e/3.5e or Pathfinder and how phoned in and lacking it is in mechanical depth and just how well it is thought out in compared to 3e or even 2e. (a cursed but unique edition) For real though if you are serious then I don't have any socials to follow online, so unless you want to add me on discord or get my email then I'll keep my rants to myself unless something happens to force it out in-thread.
>>
>>5665707
QM? Did something come up, or did Ursus taking a milk run make you think we wanted to stop for the day?

>>5665816
Guess QM thought Ursus would be gone all day or something came up.

I guess I'll see you all next session, whether that is next Tuesday or earlier. If any of you want to discuss leveling up or wants to roll for their HP then I'll check the thread every once in a while throughout the week.
>>

I think QM passed out. He wasn't ready for the hippie content.
I would add you on discord, but there is this thing about "not meeting your heroes" and I think it applies to cats, too. I think. Maybe.

Sorry friends.
I had to take care of a problem with the water heater. Family was complaining about the hot water not working so had to find the problem and fix it. Turns out it wasn't the water heater itself, it was the breaker. The switch flew out on it. Easy fix from there on afterwards. Sorry again for the lack of posts. Just to let you know, I will be available on Thursday.

>>5665893
Oh man, the magic item skill of Thief sounds nice. But the whole subclass too reliant on mechanics we don't ever use so it's useless.
Assin is meh. Very meh. Horribly meh.
I'm eyeing the Arcane Trickster, but holy shit that is a LOT of fucking spells to go through and I'm not sure how to even weave the magic into Kinny. He shares my knowledge of magic, which is to say he knows nothing and will probably ignore all the somatic and bad-touch components needed to cast anything.
tl;dr: Should I pick trickster for the sole purpose of summoning acid in the hippies' leader's face?
>>
>>5666287
It sounds good, but the magic item skill is too reliant on "mother may I"-esque logic, as while I may be misremembering I don't think magic items and their restrictions are particularly well defined in 5e, you'd be reliant on asking the QM "can I do this?" constantly.

I'd still go with Arcane Trickster, yeah. My recommendation is just read the spells at your own pace and only read the ones relevant to you. Just try and read and remember or write down a spell each day instead of all at once until you can get a vaguely accurate recollection of what each spell does by heart. Or just write them all down in some easily accessible way instead of spread out through the spell list like they are in the manual.

As for the magic mechanics, my suggestion is to read about actual stuff relevant to using them, stuff like understanding how they can be interrupted, the Concentration rules, the stuff like "this spell has a diameter of X, or this spreads like a wedge or comes out as a cone or cylinder, etc".

All you need to know about components is "who gives a shit, either I have it or I don't" you tell the QM "I buy components for all my spells while in town" essentially each time you are in town, for rare and expensive components then it is relevant to keep track of how many you buy and have and how much it'll cost you. For components that can be easily scavenged then it may be worth noting which components are like that and then occasionally doing that when we are in relevant terrain, but that is for later when you actually remember what components are used for what spell, otherwise don't worry about it.

There's probably some presumed carry over assumptions the 5e devs made regarding magic mechanics between editions that they just assume veteran players know and will explain and then proceeded to not state that those are actual rules in this edition anywhere in the book, but that practically always happens, so don't worry about it, if it isn't in the book then who cares.

>Picking Trickster just for acid splash.

Personally I'd focus more on the utility spells, spell damage is nothing to write home about until 2nd and 3rd level spells and even then utility spells are more useful even in 5e. I haven't read the Arcane Trickster spell list, so I can't do recommendations, but you don't get 2nd level spells until 7th level and 3rd level spells until level 13, so don't focus on damage because you won't get those for a while and things like invisibility, spider climb and web or Jump or some levitation spell, or Grease or other utility spells are more useful at those levels anyways. (Though being a rogue the trickster spell list is probably focused on illusion/enchantment spells instead, which are still very useful. Also most of the spells I mentioned are 2nd level spells I think.) You already do plenty of damage owing to your cat racial ability and QM being over generous with magic items this early on anyways.
>>
>>5666670
When choosing class/spells I'm really only worried about the fact that this isn't standard D&D game and a lot of more nuanced, or tied-in-with-mechanics spells will not even find application here. Hell, even throwing a knife for distraction was apparently too much, so why bother with anything but damage?
>You already do plenty of damage owing to your cat racial ability
I dunno, I feel like I do no damage compared to Ursus/Mog. Marking for Death only works once a day. Keep in mind we face enemies with lots of HP and damage.

"Oh for Mog's goddesses' sake." Kinny murmured through his magical hangover and plopped his face into the pool of water to wake himself. It was not pleasant at all, but it worked very well. Well, if you can tell me what those checkmarks are for, I could fix my mistake. Whatever it might be.
>>
>>5667165
>>5667167
Well those checkmarks should be for your saving throws.
Your saving throws do get a plus two due to your proficiency. What I find strange is that your Intelligence is still +4 instead of +6 just like your dexterity. Your intelligence is also 18+1 so it should be a saving throw of 4 plus your proficiency (which is +2) so it should also be +6.

Red flag? Hmm, it's a red flag to their security, Kinny deduced. He then tried to wake his companions up, but after failling with Mog, the cat didn't even bother with the massive bear. He instead walked up to Jenkins and the barrier. "Have you been banging at this 'door' for long, Jenkins? Got any idea what might open it?" Kinny prodded the agitated red fox before starting his own investigation into the nature of the barrier that kept them from leaving.

>This isn't a standard DnD game.

I mean...it kinda is just standard 5e with animal races and the inherit flexibility that comes with a quest/forum RP/TTRPG format. A lot of the lack of applicability for other spells is on the QM, but looking at it from his perspective (or what it might be hypothetically) we started the game with no spellcasters after El-Reed left (I barely count) and a low player count and with you being new to DnD, thus complex encounters are a detriment to having encounter ready for each session and may easily overwhelm and kill us due to the low HP totals at low levels and without us having a proper healer. It also doesn't help that this forum RP format is slower than regular TTRPG sessions and the low rate of combat encounters so far hasn't really given the chance for the QM to show his stuff even if he wanted to. Furthermore, spells aside from damage are still useful in combat encounters, obviously being able to incapacitate someone with a terrain altering spell or something would still be self-evidently useful, for example. Like I said, we've got damage covered owing to our items/builds.

>No damage.

I think you just forgot to use it in our first two encounters. You insta gibbed the wolf guards at Xana, didn't use it on the mantis, didn't use it on the hellbot, and most of your damage comes from throwing the daggers, not melee. Most of my damage is burst damage, sustained melee damage for all of us is actually probably pretty similar if you discount Ursus's single Action Surge or my 2 Divine Smites. Really, you just need to throw more daggers and we need to coordinate me fighting away from you or throwing the shield away at the start of a fight. Or we need to test EXACTLY how far the lightning will leap from it's impact point to my shield in a safe space.

>>5667118

Hi. As for the magic...*shrug*, that's one of the issues with taking a magic subclass, you have to accommodate it in your backstory or make up an explanation. Maybe Maggie magically makes other people magical by proximity. (boy that is a sentence) Maybe me or the now absent Simon rubbed off on you. Maybe you ate a magic fruit one day and suddenly you are now magical or something dumb, I dunno.

In the murky depths of unconsciousness Mog still felt aware. Dizzying lines swam in the pitch black, perhaps an artifact of the moments before sleep. He felt himself being carried, before losing awareness. When he regained wakefulness it was slow and unpleasant, though he didn't feel pain. The loud familiar yapping of companions arguing roused him from his sleep, with reluctant he opened his eyes.

He recalled the conversation his comrades had just had while his mind shook off its malaise. This was a simple problem. Silently rising while they argued, he crept up behind them, then past them to the barrier and tapped it gently. Pale moonlight flared, now familiar to the group it caught itself in the transparent barrier, like light caught in a stained glass prism.

Mog waited as the light moved like molasses through the barrier, if he was right, it'd break in 3...2...1.

Remembering himself and the situation they were in he continued "Release us if we get captured again if you can. For now we should split up, I'm gonna try and get Frostbane."

With that said he sprinted forward towards the deer. He'd grab the deer, use him as a shield so the others couldn't hit him, then slam his antlers into the carrier to make a gap for him to grab Frostbane through.

"What? Aren't you a spellcaster? Can't you do it remotely? Aren't you a guard for this weapon, why can't you open this one? Whatever, just do it!" Mog raged, bewildered at how much trouble this all was.

But first...

He slammed the deers antlers into the barrier, attempting to part the barrier just enough to get Frostbane. No, he couldn't trust the deer to tell him the truth, better to follow his own logic and get a proper weapon first. Then he'd let the deer open the cell for Ursus once we was properly equipped.

>Just as I wrote, slam the deer's antlers into the barrier, take Frostbane.

Honestly you'd think Arcane Trickster would get some bonus or specialization towards disarming magical traps/locks. In something like 3e rogues could just interact with magical locks/traps with their disarm traps/use magical device skills, iirc. Or DMs would just houserule that an successful Arcana check would let you interact with generic magic phenomena that weren't specifically keyed to a spell in 4e or 5e where arcana checks become a thing.

"Ursus! Jenkins! Good to see you guys." Mog said happily.

The two cats were even happier to see each other. A surprisingly cute moment, too bad it took place while they were under dire threat of returning to prison under worse conditions now that a guard was dead. At least he finally knew the two cat's names. Ord, Potato, Simon. Huh, where was that racoon anyways? Oh well, better that he be left with the druids, it was safer for everyone if he was locked away.

He didn't even notice Ord had followed him, he was stealthy chonker.

Anyways, he needed to get Ursus back up to speed. He handed Ursus Frostbane before rapidly explaining "Ursus, these forest dwellers are magic, the deer with the glowing horns control the magic barriers to each cave, Maggie and Bobby were kept separately and all our gear is gone, I managed to retrieve Frostbane but accidentally killed a deer. I didn't want to start killing given that we were treated well and don't know if these are friends or foes of the apes, but they took us prisoner against our will under stupid pretenses and it was an accident."

He babbled, forcing down further explanations and apologies for taking a life and forcing them into a violent situation when for all he knew all they had to do was just wait and talk it out with their captors. When he was calm again he continued "Listen, Kinny is scouting, we need to meet back up with him, find out what he knows, then get the girls and our gear before making our way out of here. We can negotiate with these fools when we are on more even footing, maybe make amends for any violence unnecessarily done to them, but we've gotta move."

>Give Ursus Frostbane.

Mog paused, gave the bear's words some thought. Ursus was right, what's done was done. He may have not acted especially moral, but he'd acted under unjust duress, of the threat of further imprisonment. Credit ought to be given to the bear, he was a smart creature, probably smarter than Mog himself. Though, that seemed to mostly be book smarts with occasional bouts of wisdom, most of the time he seemed a tad slow, or dull Mog thought, thinking back to their first meeting.

He acknowledged the bear with a respectful nod. Then he spoke again "Lets try and find Kinny, stick together, look around, whisper into some bushes. If it comes to it then we'll have to bumble through the forest yelling for him. Lets go."

"We have no choice. These pig fuckers are probably going to try and burn the forest again. We can't have that."
"Fine. But you are telling her. I'm going back near the right of the waterfall to guard the women."

Some M:tG fan picked up an order of the new set of cards that came out. But instead of getting his order he got a set that wasn't supposed to be released for several more days, they were similarly named which is how the mistake was made. WotC sent Pinkerton thugs after him to retrieve the cards and intimidated him, made his wife cry, etc.

>>5667498
Great minds think alike. I did too, but I didn't expect the magic barrier. I also expected someone to come talk to us immediately, like, to be prompted into a conversation and to be given a quest to make up for our "wrongdoing" of killing the owlbears. Left to our own devices it was kinda natural that we'd try to escape from an unjust imprisonment. Though I do admit I jumped the gun on blowing most of my divine smites and escaping instead of talking things out. But retroactively it seems like it was a good call given these guys seem like assholes stealing our hard earned equipment that we JUST bought. It's gonna take FOREVER to collect it all again. The only reason I'd be wary of setting the forest alight is that if we don't retrieve all our gear first then we could end up losing it to the fire if it spreads quickly, given that our gear seems to have been dispersed for some ungodly reason.

>>5667485

Interesting, so I guess this was the moment QM was talking about, the thing where he mentioned he was waiting for "the right moment" to reveal Maggie's sorceress abilities. Also interesting to know she is still in wolf form.
>>
>>5667504
So uhh, how far are those wolves? Do they have my knives? Would mage hand break the barrier?
>>5667518
Well, the equipment I thought would be im a cave, so far away from fire.
>>
>>5667527
I think the guards you are listening to are just deer. Or maybe raccoons since raccoons were mentioned in the same post as having your knives. I dunno.

Anyways, yeah, you are probably right about our gear. Still, some of it is in the possession of animals that we may never find if we burn down the forest. Plus some of the caves are in the crater with the forest, if we wanna get our gear in a timely fashion then burning down the forest is risky because it would be dangerous to navigate a burning forest to get to the caves on the lower level. We'd have to come back after the fire has burnt out.
>>

>>
>>5667546
Where are ny daggers then? All in the hands of raccoons? If so, HOW FAR ARE THE RACOONS.
>>
>>5667545
I mean...basically yeah. This is DnD, some murderhoboing is expected. Being serious though, we don't need to murder every single animal in search of recouping every single elemental dagger we bought, but I at least want all our big magical weapons back, plus some of the daggers. I don't necessarily mean to kill everyone, but I am just talking about the ease of accessing the caves on the crater floor if we burn down the whole forest. Mind you, we can still do that, I was in favour of it myself. I just see a potential issue with that, but it is still doable.
>>
>>5667546
>>5667548

>>
>>5667549
I would absolutely kill everyone until I get my 29 lightning, 2 fire and 1 regular dagger and the shoddy sword back. And then everyone else until we have everything back, so that these freaks don't have access to advanced weaponry.

I planned to steal my dagger with my mage hand and then follow the one deer who was going to creep up on Bobtail and harass the shit out of him, before getting rid of the barrier either by (mage) hand or by (magical) dagger.
>>
>>5667556
lol, good to know, but I was more addressing QM with that post, trying to point to your post and say "yeah, that is a good point. Being more specific with where things are would help us decide what to do"
>>
Hold on guys I'll give you a full diagram.

OH WAIT! FUCK, YOU'RE RIGHT, but not for the reason you think, or in other words not for our magic shit. THEY HAVE OUR GOD DAMN GUNS. We have to genocide them now, they are to dangerous to live. They have racoons amongst their numbers, with those guns they could take over the world! I'm only half joking.

Ah, good, we are all back together. How big is the chasm gap between where we are the the plateau across from us? If it is too big then I say we turn back and start killing deer.
>>
>>5667586
"Ursus, I think we had the sleep spell cast on us. I could be wrong, but I don't think they used alchemy on us. As long as we stay spread out and remain healthy then they'll have trouble putting us all to sleep all at once. It is as simple as shaking someone awake to disperse the sleep spell."
>>
>>5667575
"Fuuucking thieving treefuckers" Kinny boiled inside and as he cursed and punched the dirt, he felt a very strange sensation, as if something changed in the air around him. At first, he thought it was the leftover sleep magic making him see double, but then the translucent third paw in front of him moved, almost as if it was following his thoughts. "What the fuck did I do?" The cat whispered to himself, but then tried to use the Mage Paw to scratch his back.

>Jenkins soon interrupted.
"Alright, what's the plan?"
>Potato soon raised his hand.
"Duh... I say we free Bobby first."
>Ord nodded his head.
"Yeah I agree with that plan."
>Jenkins soon did a facepaw.
"We need more than that. We need a real strategy. What do you three have?"
Ursus, Mog, Kinny.... want to brainstorm a plan since you know the layout?
>>
>>5667605
Hmm I say we set up choke points up along the way in case we need to retreat because of enemy numbers, we should avoid harming the young and non combatants but definitely use force if necessary to get these horned ones to open the way out or at least parlay, that’s my idea, what about you mog?, kinny?
>>
>>5667609
"Where do you think would be the best place to do those choke points?"
>Jenkins asks the bear.

>>5667592
"Choke points are fine if we get attacked by a group and need to hold firm. The ground is narrow along the cliff's edge near the caverns in the crater's wall. A forest always has chokepoints technically between trees, but someone could always go around us with how few of us there are. Anyways, let Kinny filch his daggers back from these guys across the chasm. From there lets go along the crater's edge, getting the deer to open the barriers for us, whether that be through parley, coercion or force. After we check each cavern for our weapons and companions then we can think about descending into the forest floor to check the caverns down there and negotiate our escape from a more even position once we are fully rearmed."

"Magically inclined? What does that even mean??" Kinny responded with even more confusion, watching as the spectral paw slowly disappears into nothing. "Can I do that again?" The cat asked Mog when the paw was completely gone.
I expected to get roasted for that introduction, lmao. Originally written along the post where I confused raccoons for wolves.
>>5667599
"I don't know how well it could hold one, it's not very... sturdy?" Kinny reflected on the paw's lightness.

>>5667629
"I'm not a strategist, not a warrior here. I just want our damn equipment back, but those savages handed out the explosive knives like they were toys!" The cat hissed. "Though, maybe we could scare them a little? If we could just get one of those fire blades to explode, they would likely put them all away to not set the forest on fire." The rogue continued thinking aloud and fidgeting in dirt to 'restart' his paw.
>>
>>5667631
"So it's settled. We have a plan."
>Jenkins proclaims to the group.
"So which area should we start with?"
>>
>>5667631
"Of a magical disposition-oh, you weren't serious. Or were you. Well, whichever, you have innate magical talent and never told me, though I guess from your reaction that this is new to you too huh?" Mog said slowly, working through Kinny's confused lack of explanation gradually. This was a lot to take in.

"Mage hand is a cantrip I think, I dunno, I don't have cantrips myself. You should be able to do it whenever you please as often as you want." he finished

Eh, you're making do with your sudden selection of your subclass. Was always gonna be rough unless you made sure to plan it from the start. It happens.
>>
>>5667635
Kinny is trying to magehand his daggers back from the racoons across the chasm. Might wanna deal with that first.

"Just go back the way we came and deal with the nearest deer and work our way from there."
>>
>>5667635
"Woah, I didn't say I would be choking no points, friend. You should ask Ord and Potato, they are the dirty work experts here." Kinny informed the fox and pointed him to the two adorable furballs who were in - much - need for some physical exercise. Himself, he just wanted the knives back and chokepoints weren't on his to-do list.

"So you say, huh?" Kinny tried extending and contracting his claws into the dirt like he did before while murmuring something like he used to do often... and after a moment another paw appeared from the dirt a few inches from his own. This one had a faint white color unlike the last one. "Well that's nice. I will finally be able to scratch my back properly." The magical cat almost purred, but quickly remembered where he was. "Should I try to get one of my daggers back? Can this..." Kinny squinted at the Mage Paw and it slowly faded into nothing, a second later something plapped into dirt quietly, leaving a barely visible catprint. The cat then looked at Mog and the old wolf felt something scratch his shoulder. "...yup, it can come handy." Then the scratching stopped.
>>5667635
Kinny moved his attention towards the raccoons who he knew carried his knives. With a bit of luck, he could use the invisible paw to disarm them and even get back his daggers.

>He really was interested in it.
>Thankfully he didn't even notice the mage hand approaching.
>No one seemed to.
>They only seem to notice as the paw grabbed onto the knife and began carrying it.
"Holy shit! A ghost!"
"The knives are cursed Run!"
>The racoons and the orange antlered deer soon began to flee the area.
>Jumping down to the grassy surface.
>Leaving the entrance and knives alone for you.
>Seems like they are going towards the group of yellow antlered deer to ask for some sort of exorcism.

Kinny gained one Lightning Dagger back.

>>5671313
"They're distracted. If we were ever gonna look in that cave, now would be the time. If you're up for it Kinny then I can hold a rope out for you while you swing down and take a peek. There might be a barrier and no chance of getting in without killing the deer, but we just need to see what is inside. Maybe you can break the barrier with your mage hand or...I dunno, maybe you've got some hidden mojo you can unleash on the thing, you've certainly been full of surprises for most of today. If not, the knife should work." Mog said, hurriedly unfurling a rope for Kinny in case he agreed.
>>
>>5671318
"Mwahahaha." Kinny laughed quietly as the invisible paw returned with his knife.
>>5671324
The rogue cat didn't wait for Mog to finish and just grabbed the end of the rope and began attaching it to his backpack's harness. "Yeah, I gotta go down there, there are my knives down there!" He exclaimed and primed himself to hop down the hill.
>Getting ready to jump down to recover my knives and get a look at the cave.
What roll? Acrobatics?
>>5671318
Something important: I can make my Mage Hand literally invisible, as per Arcane Trickster's level 3 thing. Even if I failed that roll, they wouldn't be able to see it without some counter-magic.
>>5671324
It's shameful, but I didn't really pick spells yet. I think I will just grift with Mage Hand until I get some sort of inspiration, or maybe base them on conversations/situations. I hope it's not a problem.

Usually descending by rope on a rough cliff surface is considered doable by default with no roll, I think? Given that it is just descending with plenty of handholds to a platform that is just below us. I actually thought that platform was across from us, not below us, my bad. But yeah, if it was an actual challenge like climbing a cliff, then it'd be a acrobatics or athletics roll.

Kinny regained a Fire Dagger.
Kinny gained a Dagger.
>As Kinny went down to the entrance of the cave he could see there was no barrier.
>He could also see that the cave only had what was mostly assumed to be wooden ass, regular ass, boring ass, broken ass, dull ass, petrified ass, hard ass weapons.
>That's seven asses so you know it to be true.
>Still a wooden weapon is better than nothing.
>And petrified wood is strong as fuck.
>Could be worth something.

"Huh? They looted even this blade?" Kinny thought to himself as he put the fire blade and the regular dagger in his front sheathes. At least now he wasn't completely defenseless. When the cat entered the cave and saw it filled with petrified weapons, he picked the lightest weapons he could comfortably carry out and skittered out of the cave to climb back up to where Mog waited for him.

>>
>>5671361

Kinny quickly climbed back up and once he caught his breath, he presented the petrified club to Mog. "The whole cave was just full of generic wooden weapons. Or so I think, they could be magical?" The cat glanced at the club.

Though learning about these people's faith is interesting to me in an distant academic sense, and I'm sure even more so to Ursus, we've got bigger things to focus on. We can stop by here and look around proper inside once we've cleared the top level of deer."

>You move your mage paw.

>>
>>5671397
Does the mage hand not interfere with the barrier like magical items do?
>>
>>5671398
Nope it's like a ghost if anything.
>>
>>5671397
>>5671398
"Hmm, maybe it has to do with the destructive nature of the magics upon our items or through my divine smiting that renders the barriers asunder, like throwing a stone in a pond before the shape is restored. Perhaps the benign nature of your paw allows it to pass through, like swimming through like, magic moving through a field of its natural environment. Or perhaps your stealthy nature renders your paw invisible to the barrier, so it doesn't know to stop you." Mog speculated.
>>
>>5671397
"Aw shucks." Kinny murmured and without wasting any more time, used the Mage Paw to pull out the lightning dagger and lay it down on the ground inside the barrier, keeping just the hilt outside to be able to recover it later. He then turned to Mog.
>>5671401
"I sure wish the barrier treated me the way it tastes the Paw." Kinny responded. "Now let's hope those deer can't sense when the barrier is tampered with."

>taste the paw!

>>5671403
>As the dagger soon pierced the barrier it began acting as if was hit by Mog's Smite.
>Only this was a tiny hole compared to Mog's giant hole he made.
>It seems as if the barrier only blocks physical damage.
>Takes damage from magical items but will heal up eventually.
>It also seems to ignore magic in general as any magical thing conjured just passes through with ease.
>>
>>5671403
"If they can we'll clobber them. They've got it coming and I've got questions for these overgrown prey, like where's Maggie and what the hell is wrong with these people." Mog responded darkly. The thought of the girl wandering about lost in the woods, unused to her superior lupine form set him at unease. If she was still with Bobby then it'd be a simple matter of killing or coercing the deer responsible for her cell, but she was more wilful than that. How had she escaped? Had she awoken before they'd put her in her cell and fled? Or did she possess some latent magical talent unbeknownst to the group and escaped that way?

Many questions, not a lot of answers.

"Ready to deal with the deer over there?" Mog queried.
>>
>>5671411 Damn.
>>5671412
"Yeah, you're right." Kinny's careless tone got more serious once he saw Mog's expression. "You might want to use Frostbane to open these things, it seems. Where do we go now?" The cat asked while pulled his lighting dagger out of the barrier and back into his backpack.
>>
>>5671418
>>5671411
"Next door, we'll bonk the deer on the head, wake him up and question him for if there has been any news on Maggie. Probably ask them what their deal is, where our stuff is, and who are their best fighters too. Lets go." Mog concluded.

>Move pic related

"Shh, any wrong moves and you're dead pal, got it?" Mog waited for a nod indicating the deer understood.

When it was received he moved on and asked "I have some questions for you, can you answer them for me real quiet like?"

Again, he waited for another nod. Channelling his voice into a low menacing whisper he listed his questions as he prowled back and forth "First question, what happened to the female wolf that you had in captivity, where was she last seen?"

When the deer began to respond he cut him off "SHH, ah, ah, ah, I'm gonna ask ALL my questions, and then you are gonna respond and answer all of them back, so make sure your noggin is workin' right or I just might take a piece of it for myself, clear?"

Another nod. He leaned in close, pressing his borrowed shortsword close to the deer's ribs, spoke softly "Good, second question is *what the fuck*...is your guy's problem, huh? Why'd you just cast sleep on us and abduct us and steal our stuff for defending ourselves and moving through land we have every right to be movin' through, huh? If the fire was such a big deal, why didn't you clean up the oil barrel yourselves?!"

Again he could sense the deer hurry to respond, as if sensing Mog was going to shank him. He pressed the sword in close until it drew blood. Practically drooling into the deer's ear, he continued "I'm not done yet, lanky. Third question, what's in this cave? Fourth question, where is our stuff, what weapon did you put in which cave, point it out to me, tell me which raccoons have which daggers. Fifth question, who are your leaders, your best fighters, what can they do? Sixth question, how do we get out of this crater, where's the exit? Seventh question, where is this in relation to where you picked us up, which direction is there from here or vice versa. And...I can't think of anything else, now you better have remembered all my questions, 'cause it is your turn to answer all of them. When you're done, you are gonna deactivate this here barrier and walk inside and we are gonna tie you up, and you are gonna be one of the lucky few to get outta this alive, okay?"

He looked over at Kinny to see if the cat was successful and done with his own questioning.
>>

>what the fuck...is your guy's problem, huh? Why'd you just cast sleep on us and abduct us and steal our stuff for defending ourselves and moving through land we have every right to be movin' through, huh? If the fire was such a big deal, why didn't you clean up the oil barrel yourselves?!
"She wanted it left that way. As a reminder to why all the old ones from the past are bad. She never expected anyone to disobey her orders and start a fire. Ruining what Nature made for us after the old ones ruined it."

>Third question, what's in this cave?
"Artefacts! Artefacts from our leader! She asked me guard the artefacts in this cave!"

Fourth question, where is our stuff, what weapon did you put in which cave, point it out to me, tell me which raccoons have which daggers.
"All your weapons are on the floor area. They are guarded by the Great Deer Brothers. That's where all prisoner contraband is. As for your friends daggers. Foxman gave every raccoon a dagger that belonged to your friend."

>Sixth question, how do we get out of this crater, where's the exit?
"You have to climb the waterfall."

>Seventh question, where is this in relation to where you picked us up, which direction is there from here or vice versa.
"Listen Pigfucker if you are headed to Canis Lupis you're still a few days away. All you need to do is go north and climb the mountains. Then you can trade your shit over to the Apes."
>>
>>5671460
"You're about to be stuck like a pig if you give me mouth again, you hear me you wretched ungulate? The only thing we are trading the tyrants up north is a sword through the front. Last question, well, last two, since you forgot one of mine. I'll ask again, who are your leaders, who are your best fighters, what are they capable of? Last, you know anything about the wolves up north? Where'd they go after the conquest, any stragglers or last bands of resistance? I need to meet up with them." Mog responded with a snarl. He thought about slamming the deer into the barrier, but remembered his better self for the moment.
>>
>>5671469
>Last, you know anything about the wolves up north? Where'd they go after the conquest, any stragglers or last bands of resistance? I need to meet up with them
"I knlw nothing of the wolves up North. Most animals said they died peacefully from old age while some other who became senile ended up being hanged by the apes who currently live there due to trying to start another uprising. That's all I know I swear."
>That isn't all though.

Mog went still, thinking. A brave soul perhaps? Or maybe in some strange twist of fate this was one of the leaders masquerading as one of the lay folk? What did he have up there in that thick skull of his, Mog had to know.

Rising suddenly and standing on his hind legs he grabbed the ungulate by the antlers and wrenched them towards the barrier, parting the transparent ward with a subtle *hiss*. He twisted the buck's head to the side, so he could see the decapitated form of his fellow deer that the hirelings were busy cleaning up. Raising his voice just enough to be below regular speaking volume he ranted into the deer's ear "See that, see this holy symbol? You're gonna end up just like your brother over there, a headless herbivore haunting the plains of Purgatory for a million years, lost amongst the tormented souls and the howling winds looking for your head if you don't tell me what I want to know about your leaders. Now, speak!"

Of course he had no intention of damning the poor deer's soul or murdering him in cold blood, but the prisoner didn't know that. So Mog channelled his rage at being abducted and accused of murder for defending himself and his friends, forgot his better self and poured every ounce of anger into being the most intimidating wolf he could be. He wanted his question answered and he wasn't gonna take 'no' for an answer.

>Rolling intimidate, will reroll with lucky if it is a poor roll.

He was also aware of the fact he woke up dry, which meant whoever dragged them in here didn't go through water. For the first time in this exchange, it was the black cat barking at the frightened deer. Sorry, got distracted by something.

Mog sighed. "Well, truth or lie, whether under duress from me or your leaders, I'll admit you're a brave one. Here, bite down on this, this may hurt."

He pulled the deer free of the barrier and stuck a stick in the ungulate's mouth. It wasn't clear to Mog if what he was about to do would actually hurt the deer, but better be safe than sorry. Didn't these guys shed their antlers every year and ram each other all the time? Still, he needed this barrier down and didn't want to count on the warder staying unconscious or willingly keeping it off, or even turning it back on and slicing Mog in half when he stepped through.

When the deer was no longer in danger of biting his own tongue off Mog rose again and put his weight on the deer to lower him to the ground. Then, taking his shortsword he began hacking at the glowing antlers. The ward wasn't long for this world and a life would be spared.

>Hack off the deer's antlers.

Kinny grinned when he noticed the deer turn around confused, meaning his attempt at distraction worked. Fair enough, lol. I feel like that pic is gonna be how this all turns out in the end.

"Huh, that wasn't supposed to happen." Mog took a glance back in forth to see if anyone noticed, not that it helped with his eyesight. Prying his sword free he began to whistle nonchalantly, awkwardly pushing the deer carcass into the cave it was previously guarding.

"Don't worry buddy, I'll make good use of your meat. Oh, and yeah guide your soul to the moon, that too." he joked to no one in particular, he doubted the ghost of the deceased found it particularly funny. True to his word he shamefully began to rip free a strip of the best section for a snack. He hadn't eaten yet, too hasty to get out and wary of the offered food to some vague memory of Kinny warning about potential poison.

When he was done he looked around to examine the cave the deer had been guarding.

"What with? And what do you need cloth for? Where even is she? The guards said she disappeared." Kinny asked, turning towards the cat once again, looking around the cave suspiciously. "If she's still in here, then we will need to get very creative to let her out. The barrier needs to be broken with magical weapons, and my knives leave small openings good enough only for me or you."
>>
>>5672727
Whoops. One mistake after another, just all the bad decisions were being made it seemed. Mog hid his guilt from nonexistent observers, grumbling aloud about how "CLEARLY, these folks were discriminatory hypocrites who placed the value of mammalian life above that of avians and...whatever fish were," and how he was an "equal opportunity eater and didn't discriminate based on taxonomy."

When he was done moping the lupine managed to gather his wits and shoved a weeks worth of fish and bird meat into his pack. They might be here and while and needed a food supply while staying stealthy and mobile. No use wasting their own food, to keep their energy for the fight up they could have double servings off the enemy's labour.

As he exited the cave he gave one last guilty glance at the expired deer. He'd have to make sure the poor creature was properly buried when this was all over. It was the least he could do.

Time to meet up with Jenkins and the rest, Kinny was waiting.

"I uhh... see. I don't think I have much, but..." Kinny lowered his voice. "Did we ever take her clothes with us?" * The cat asked and started looking through his backpack. The only things that could cover Maggie were old pieces of his leather armor he still had buried somewhere. "Are you sure you can't just... go like this? I mean there aren't any old ones around and we don't really care that much for... nudity?" Kinny asked the girl cautiously while he rummaged through his things to find the old junk. "There. This is all I've got." He said, finally pulling out the interconnected pieces of leather. "We could tear this down and connect with rope to make makeshift clothes for you. This is the best I've got on me."

We just gotta fetch the girls, get our gear back, and return the favour to these catnappers and then we're home free." Mog explained, nodding off in Kinny's direction.

It was about time to meet up.

>Meet back up. Let the stealthier Jenkins and Potato and Ord lead the way so that stealth isn't so much an issue, get their assistance with any sneaking that needs doing.
>On the way glance into the pink and blue caves on the right side of the waterfall, I assume the girl's prison is the red cave and not the pink cave the deer was standing in front of, otherwise you'd think he'd have noticed the barrier going down. >Like a bolt from a crossbow like the Lizards use.
>Flying across the air passing Kinny and Bobby.
>The fire then goes through the barrier like Kinny's magic paw did.
>It simply flies pass the deer.
>Leaving the antlered creature stunned.
>Much like Bobby who was surprised by the fire that just came from the human's hand.
>Even Maggie herself was surprised and dumbfounded what she did.
"Wh-... what was that?"
>The human asked herself.
>Another whisper soon arrised.
>It was from the horny fuck.
"An old one."
>The red antlered deer soon began crawling his way away.
>As if he was in a hurry to tell someone.
>The flying flame continued to go for a bit before finally fizzing out.
Maggie learned(?) Firebolt.

Keeping to his story that he was a mute wolf he kept dancing. In between wild dance moves he scratched elegant script into the earth with his paws that he was wandering through the forest and needed to stop by a watering hole for water. Hopefully their bosses didn't catch everyone up to speed on their new prisoners.

Then he scrawled an increasingly bizarre explanation for why he was dancing into the dirt. He explained that he had spotted pomegranate's in the waterfall and smelled the smell of overripe fruit, like fermented juice. Never one to pass up a natural tavern he drank deep and here he was, living the life.

For emphasis he took out the single pomegranate he had taken from their make-shift fridge that he had meant to give to Maggie so that she understood the indigestive horrors such a cursed fruit could bring upon a wolf, she'd understand now that she was transformed. With a swift chop he SMASHED it into his drawings, splattering juices everywhere.

>Deception roll.

Isn't the horny deer still lassoed? Might take him a while to get away, especially with Kinny right there.
>>
>>5672800
"It's alr-" Kinny's response to the red cat was cut off by the sudden burst of yelling, cursing and screaming. Despite the sudden chaos, Kinny quickly noticed the sparks coming out of Maggie's hands. "OH FUCK." The cat cursed and, having no idea what to expect from angry old one's magic, rolled out of the way.
Jeez, did anyone even look at her? The deer is still tied outside, isn't he?
>>5672807
"Oh FUCK no you don't!" Kinny yelled after the deer and pulled Bobby towards the barrier with him. "Come on, we need to stop him!" The rogue passed one dagger to the other cat and used another to "cut" his way out.

Mog facepawed when the raccoons finally came to the conclusion that, yes, he was doing an interpretive dance. He double facepawed when instead of reading the script he had scrawled into the dirt for them to read in between top tier dance moves they instead chose to actually try and interpret his dance.

Overawed by their sheer stupidity and the miracle of his escape he wandered off with the two cats to meet up with Kinny.

Seeing the hogtied deer limp-crawling away and the two smugglers about to be caught in the transparent flytrap, Mog hurried over to the ungulate before he got in range to scream for help or throw himself over the edge and swung a decapitating strike with his blade in order to silence any words of warning worming their way out of the creature's throat.

>Aim a slice at the deer's vocal cords so he can't alert the guards.

>>5672834
Would Bobby and Kinny really end up like the decapitated deer, wasn't I almost stuck in the barrier partway before I smashed my way out? I thought if you got caught it just kinda made you stuck, I was surprised it acted like a portal gun cutting someone in half with the deer.

Eavesdropping stirred Mog's conscience. He was conflicted. This band seemed to go about things in a self-destructive and antisocial way, they only damaged their own cause by their methods, but their goals spoke Mog on some level. He admitted he favoured the Moon more than the Earth, but he remiss in tending to the soil that sustained them. Even if the Goddess closer to home cared little for every small action and more for the wider scope of things.

But Einstein had said the humans had protected them in the past, and their industry dotted the land with wonders and blessed them with their varied intellects. Surely they owed them something. They probably had more in common with the humans than their ancient ancestors, certainly most animals he knew only hunted when necessary and lived semi-urban lifestyles nowadays. The Old One's technology offered a way out of the brutal lifestyle of a feudal killer that most suffered from, and that was a creator concern to most animals nowadays than some ineffable past harms human's had done to the world.

Besides, it seemed like the cursed dragons had sealed their own doom by offering up their technology to the humans. A technology that may in the future be so advanced it could sustain industry without harm to the world. Yet, could one achieve good through damnable means? Surely not, the new strength of humanity came from wicked claws, a poisoned pill offered in bad faith by the devils of the Outer Dark.

What to do, what to do? In some ways Mog agreed with these hippies more than not, yet they had their own obvious problems and however much he ideologically aligned with them...they were just so stupid and out of touch with every other animal.

Anyways...

"Yeah, step back."

>>5672905
>>5672903
And she was free. Ah, best remind Ursus. "Ursus, did you perhaps remember to pick up here clothes from when she transformed? I don't have them and evidently neither does she. At the very least she could use the scale armour you bought her now, it'd do her some good, I think."

"Lets check the rest of these caves on this side of the waterfall, a bunch of the deer controlling the barriers bought the farm, so we should be able to look inside. After that, we can drop to those lower plateaus and deal with those deer and check out those caves before finally descending to the crater floor. We need to get our weapons back and deal with the leaders, we can't have these people hurting anyone else. Maybe if we can work something out then we can be allies against the apes, who knows?" Mog explained his rough plan. Not a lot of specific manuevers in mind yet, just a broad plan of action.

We can’t destroy too much of their defenses and infrastructure, we have already destroyed the biggest form of protection they had, if we plan on avoiding the destruction of their tribe

"If all goes well then burning down the forest and poisoning their water won't be a thing that happens at all. Nor do I intend to kill every one of them unless they swarm us like lemmings. Ideally we'd talk to their leaders, fight a duel if it comes down to that owing to some awful sense of machismo and zealotry on their part and get our rightful property returned. I don't really care about retrieving all the daggers, we can go back and buy more." Mog explained, pausing for a breathe as Maggie rustled behind them.

He sighed. Though he was sure Kinny disagreed with that sentiment.

Remembering his train of thought he continued on "Even better would be if we could come to an understanding and get an agreement for freedom of movement through the forest, this route would be ideal for sneaking past the border when we rise in rebellion in the north and need to strike the different sectors of the ape's empire at will. A strategic partnership would be even better. Sadly, this is all pretty unlikely, we both have our rightful grievances. While I don't agree with how they detained us against our will and stole our property, and we weren't abused in prison, I unfortunately ended up killing a pair of our jailers in our escape attempt. So, this conflict will likely have to be solved with violence and one of us backing down."

"Ummm... we killed one... maybe two." Kinny mumbled a response to the cut cat between angrily licking his paw. He just finished MIGHTILY hissing at Maggie after she dropped her act to snuggle him naked, messed up his fur even further and stole his precious cat-warmth with her cold skin. The cat was royally pissed at the way human treated and yelled at him initially, just to act in a way she herself would probably consider shameless right after. She even left his armor behind in the pink cave, which he sure as fuck wasn't going to try and get inside again. His ass was still burning from the barrier closing on him. "HISS." Kinny kicked a stone in irritation and hesitantly walked close to the pink barrier, tapping on it with his paw-pad. He could try to recover the equipment with the Mage Hand, just needed to slip a dagger inside the barrier for the leather to pass without putting his tail on the line again.

Kinny looked at the deer once again. No-ope. Back at Maggie. Then at Mog. "I'm not this group's muscle. You break that weirdo's horns. And in the case you break his neck instead, I'm sure nobody will miss him." Except Margaret. That is, unless Mog accidentally murdered her too. But that part the cat left to himself as he explained his position to the wolf, while keeping safe distance from the deer. It was true, his strength left much to be desired and he had no intention to wrestle with the lasso'd BDSM enthusiast's antlers while being moaned at.
>>
>>5681519
>>5681527
Mog glanced at Kinny, met his gaze, looked at the deer, averted his eyes, looked at Maggie, then at Ursus, then down at the ground. He sighed "Why's it always gotta be me? And with the weirdos too? Alright, hold him still."

Assuming this guy's horns only controlled barriers on the upper level then this shouldn't alert anyone, hell even if they did turn off barriers elsewhere, the wards were invisible, thus there would be no indication they'd been turned off.

Taking a moment to line up his swing he lackadaisically took a few practice swings before striking suddenly with a violent burst of motion.

>Cut off this horny (heh) fuck's antlers.

Feigning sudden fear and forcing his eyes to dilate, Mog stumbled back and let out an gasp "A druid?! Then we really are doomed! We're surrounded by forest. I can only hope that is all she can do, surely she can't do much more than make some trees move around, what else could she possibly do when she can already do so much? Listen buddy, you gotta tell me where each of your leaders are so I can avoid them, I'll do you a solid and give you a few whacks to get your jollies off or whatever, please, I'm willing to leave you guys alone, I just need to know where they are so I can avoid them!"

>Using my Nat 20 to continue to fish for more info, I assume I don't need to roll again since I already got a 20. Feigning weakness to bait him into being confident enough to blab. Fishing for the Druid's spell list and for the locations of the leaders so we can ambush them individually.

>>5681598
To be fair, you having a -4 mod is super unusual and more a quirk of the animal custom rules we are using for this quest/RP than normal occurrence. Also, you are using a club, if you were using your daggers to knock him out you wouldn't get the strength malus because they are finesse weapons and you'd get your dex mods instead.
>>
>>5681605
The fact that weapon's damage can be fully negated by damage modifier that is a result of character being weak is absurd and just sucks dick. I already get penalized when rolling to hit with anything that needs strength.
>>
>>5681607
I think you actually always do a minimal of 1 damage. But, yeah, strong characters are supposed to melee with the appropriate weapons in 5e, and dexterous characters are supposed to do ranged or use finesse weapons. Just use your daggers, you can still knock him out with the butt of the weapon, just declare nonlethal damage and you'll get your full damage as if you were normally using your daggers.
>>
>>5681595
I just took it more as fake taunting trying to lure his dumbass to reveal shit to you.

I bet by the time she is done, she'll have those wolf fucks right on her finger tips! They she'll fuck you all right in the-"

>>5681593
>Before the horny fuck could continue the smartest cat to ever exist knocked him the fuck out with his newly acquired club.
>Sure it didn't do any damage but it knocked him out at least.
>Guess guess Petrified Wood can bring in some uses.
>With the horny fuck now knocked out the rest of the gang wonders what to do.
What is the plan now?
>>
>>5681609
"That's enough." Kinny said as he tucked the hefty club into his bottomless backpack. After that, he turned around to face Mog, the only wolf in the party and asked. "Do you think what he's saying is true? What if they do get wolves on their side?"

"Welp...problem solved. Not great timing, but we got what we needed. These fuckers are vulnerable and nearly leaderless, only the bear remains here. The best time to strike is now. Quick, lets search the rest of the these caves and then start picking these guys off." Mog said, not particularly upset to have to stop listening to the strange horny fuck anymore.

"I think he is telling the truth, but I'm not sure she can succeed. As well versed as these grass chewers are in magic, they are a tiny faction. It may not look like it to us given we were just their prisoners and how badly the thieves outnumber us, but Canis Lupin is a nation that spans practically all of that big space on the map in the bunker labelled "Canada", I doubt they are in the league required to even get a meeting with whoever leads the nation nowadays, much less have any say in the terms of their relationship if they were to "ally". The wolves need no incentive to rebel against the apes other than weakness in the enemy ranks, if the apes were in a bad spot I'm sure they'd already be doing it. Honestly, this druid may find sympathy for her cause, everyone loves trees after all, but I doubt she'll get more than token assistance, it is possible though. By the time we're done with this place, she may not have a faction to lead anyways, depending on how things go, plus she'll be gone for a month, we may never meet." Mog exchanged back at Kinny over his shoulder as he walked.

Sorry, didn't see this.

As Kinny listened to Mog's mentally stimulating response, his own brain started working. "Yeeah, but maybe we should make sure there is no witnesses after all?" The cat glanced back at the knocked-out deer. "Even if they get no help, but return to find out we broke out and killed some of them - which they will, from that horny idiot - we might have an additional tail in the future. They might not pursue us, but you never know when old business comes to bite you in the ass." "Wouldn't be the first time mercy bit us in the ass, or brutality. Remember that time back in Windy Vale? With the red fox and the giant bumblebees? Good times...or not." Mog reminisced as the stone wore on underfoot.

Turning serious he said "I 'ppreciate you discussing it instead of just doing it, but for real, we all have a bone to pick with these losers. I don't intend to kill anyone in cold blood, but you're your own person. If you wanna burn down the forest and kill everyone, go for it. I just want our stuff back. Not gonna kill any more enemies of the apes than I have to, but we're a party and I'll back you up, or at least prevent you from dyin'. "Heh, we're in luck. Load it up Kinny, they stole from us, so by rights we ought to return the favour. That's how that works, right? Hahaha!" Mog laughed easily, in a good mood to have at least something good come out of being abducted. A treasure cave eased the burdens of the heart.

Next came the scroll cave. "Ah, that explains it. Scrolls. Weird, you'd need a pretty powerful wizard to make them though. If they have a leader or ally capable of that, then perhaps it is for the best that we not stick around. Anyways, throw it in the bag, free spells on demand for us."

At the tree cave Mog's fur stood up on end. He barked out in a harsh whisper "Careful! Something seems off about this place. Investigate carefully, stretch out your senses, look for magic. Ursus, Kinny, you honestly both seem surprisingly good at that, why not give it a shot."

We need one of your fire daggers, chuck it into the woods, somewhere dry. Gather em all around the fire, one place to trap em all, put em to the sword."

In a daze he wandered back outside to go mug some raccoons.

QM, I'm pretty sure these are the exact same raccoons I fooled earlier. Not that it matters, since I intended to straight up attack them anyways.

Charging forward without another word, Mog swung his sword with righteous fury. The short steel in his maw felt wrong, the heft not quite what he was used to. Still, he tried to accommodate the shorter length and aimed for the throat.

>Seems like a quarrel will begin soon.
>Though as you all watch this begin Maggie does have a question.
"Is Q Wolf like a religion or something like that? I'm confused."
>>
>>5697416
"What in the unholy hells is going on?" Mog said to no one in particular as he peered over the edge.

Why the sudden ideology change? What the fuck was a whale? Q Wolf? What was that? Something to do with the the leaders who went to Canis Lupin? Did the wolves somehow subvert this group? Or did Sage and...whatever the wolf leader of this band of tree humpers was called...have a falling out?

Maggie broke the silence with a question Mog was sure was on everyone's mind. He had no real answer to give, but started talking to fill the air. "No idea...maybe these cultists found a new cult to follow. Maybe the wolves of Canis Lupin rebuilt their strength and augmented their martial prowess with mind influencing magic and screwed these guys up when their deal went south. Perhaps my fellows subverted these guys through conventional means. Maybe Sage and the wolf lieutenant from this weird cult had a falling out and this is just some weird civil war. I dunno."

Mostly he was just repeating his earlier thoughts aloud, leaving out his ignorance of whales aside. This was so strange. There was an unusual dagger too, one not from their supply. Some other supplier trafficking magical weapons to this group, perhaps? Surely it wouldn't be Elder Swift, right? Sean didn't have such weapons in stock, Swift would've told the group about this odd group given how much he cared about Maggie, and in general he shouldn't have a reason to smuggle odd weapons like this, surely.

He looked to the rest of the group for their thoughts before deciding on whether they should intervene or just continue sneaking around and mugging deer for cave access.
>>
>>5697430
Just curious. You forgot you did the interpretive dance didn't you?
>>
>>5697435
It has been quite a while since we got a proper session going, so yeah, I did forget. However I'm pretty sure the guys I distracted with the dance were the raccoons we LITERALLY just killed. So unless they had the time to descend to the forest floor and preach this new religion based off of me, have everyone accept it and then return to their original positions to be murdered by us, I didn't really think of how my dance would result in this. It's cool that my action had that consequence, but there's no way I'd make that connection, especially given the time between that session and this one.
>>
>>5697439
[spoiler[Maybe I am crazy but I was sure that it was the raccoons on the left side of the waterfall. Then again like you said it has been a while.[/spoiler]
>>
>>5697442
Yeah, it has been a while. I think we already dealt with the left side guys and it was the right side guys I was distracting. Also, rereading the interpretive dance incident in question I forgot how absolutely brain dead raccoons are in this game, the dice does not favour a narrative that would imply their intelligence at all with how many of our fucked up situations involve bad/good rolls with dumb raccoons.

I'll wait for Kinny and Ursus for now. If they don't show up then I'll archive this thread later today or tomorrow and we can start fresh with a new thread next Tuesday to let them know we're on again.

Shivers crept up the feline's back when he remembered the BDSM freak.
>>
>>5697470
"Honestly...I think we should just let them fight. No need to interrupt them during their theological dispute or...whatever it is they are fight over. We should cross back over the waterfall to the other side and drop down onto the lower plateau to take out that pair of deer, it'll open up more caves and from there we can choose to either observe the fight to watch for developments or enter one of the newly opened caves to look for our weapons." I would prefer to keep any fight we initiate in this stage expedient and contained so I can go for a drop on 3 we must also keep moving as the tribe will start to notice our trail
>>
>>5697507
As for the wolf well we could play that to our advantage seeing as mog is Both a leader and a wolf, mog you up to stoking their crazy

>Nothing really important.
Go in for the strike now?
If you choose to strike now, make an attack roll with advantage. Be sure to add in your sneak attack Kinny.

"...3!" The cat didn't signaled his readiness and jumped down towards his deer-target, fire knife in his mouth, ready to be plunged into the guard's neck.
>rolling for attack with advantage
I don't know what you mean by sneak attack? Isn't that like the damage part?
>>
>>5697517
16, is this a hit?

Yes I was telling you have that in this situation.

Kinny dropped on his target with murderous intent, sinking claws inside his back to stabilize himself before stabbing the unfortunate deer in the spine and knocking him off-balance with the sheer speed, violence and momentum. It was like a sack of shurikens fell on the damn primitive's head, but would it be enough to bring him to the ground in one swift motion?
Thanks, I'd probably miss it. Thankfully my sheet is a bit better too by now and has that info, so maybe I wouldn't have missed it.

Really sorry about the sudden two hour disappearance guys. I stepped away to help a family member. Took way longer than I thought it would, worse I was a dumbass and lay down to take a rest which ended up being an impromptu nap without me notifying you guys or setting an alarm or anything. My bad. Embarrassing to admit, but it happened. If you wanna call it quits here then I understand. I'll try and be more on top of it next session. If not then I'm still good to continue.

Mog went to follow up on his compatriots good work. His shock at Kinny's sudden drop aside, their assault worked had worked out pretty good so far. He aimed to finish off Ursus's prey, took a step forward, and promptly tripped over himself and tumbled over the edge awkwardly.

He yelped like a kicked pup and swung his blade in a falling crescent arc, hoping to redeem himself on his tumble and at least strike the antlers off the deer to make up for his embarrassment.

>Rolling to attack with shortsword and advantage.

To be fair we all did that at one point.
Roll for damage.

True. I wouldn't be kicking myself so much if it weren't our first session in a while though.

>His head simply rolling up to Ursus as his horns start to dim down,
>Opening more doors.
>>
>>5697606
"H-how does it keep happening!? I go to remove their antlers and I end up chopping off their heads instead! I must be going blind in my old age!" Mog exclaimed in dismay as he saw the rolling head from his prone position.

He got up quickly, looking to see if Kinny still needed help with the antlers of the other one. Maybe he better let Ursus handle the follow up to Kinny's strike, with his luck Mog would just end up taking another life by accident. Perhaps just how it was meant to go with wolves and deer, it was nature's path.

>The other deer sees what happened to his friend.
>He then kneels down.
"W- wait!! Please don't kill me!! I'm already disarmed!! You don't have to kill me. I'll put down the barrier. Just don't kill me!!"
>>
>>5697611
Nah your more likely to snap a vertebra if your trying to cut the horn, the force alone would cause the head to snap violently and kill them out right, it’s why you don’t wear horns on your armor if you plannings on going into melee combat
>>5697613
We have seen what this otter lady has done to one of the apes in the region, for all my disgust of their government they as individuals do not deserve such fates, do you agree with her or me because I plan on avenging that apes suffering and you best not get in the way.
>>
>>5697614
"You mean our druid? She is in fact the one who turned the ape into a tree. But he was a criminal. He was literally attacking everything. That's what our bear leader Kuma said. He ordered the druid to make the order, we all just follow orders."
>>
>>5697615
Then you should have killed him turned him to ash and buried him into the ground to provide nutrients to the soil, where you going to attempt such cruelty on my companions
>Ursus straitened his axe pointing towards the deer
>>
>>5697616
Exact pose and expression of Ursus while asked him these questions
>>
>>5697616
"That's for Kuma to decide."
>The deer nervously said as he continued to lay his head down to bow to the bear in front of him.
>>
>>5697619
Then it is time for some on else to decide
>>
I’m gonna wait for someone else in my party to decide
>>
>>5697620
"Are any of you even qualified to make a choice?"
>>
>>5697622
By virtue of understanding such magic is a sin against Mother Nature a contortion of her creations that immediately makes us better fit
>>
Mog if you wish want to cut his horns off I suggest using a serrated metal wire like the ones used to cut tree branches.
>>
>>5697613
"Listen pal, I'm sorry 'bout your friend, but I don't think we can let you keep your antlers intact, you could just turn the barrier back on and end up cutting us in half, it happened to one of your other horned buddies earlier. The antlers gotta go, they grow back anyways, right?" Mog opined, giving his take and waiting for contradictions.

>>5697614
Ursus came in handy with his surprising depth of knowledge. He nodded, acknowledging the bear's input, then asked "Would it work better if we sawed them off?"

>>5697615
"You have a bear too?!" Mog asked sharply, his voice raised in alarm. He couldn't remember, did the other horny deer mention a bear as well? He remembered a the Otter, Sage, there was a wolf, he couldn't remember who the other leaders were. Damn, that could be a problem. Hopefully Ursus proved stronger, or smarter at least.

>>5697624
"I don't have something like that, they took all our weapons, remember? I only have what we recovered. Maybe Kinny has something like that in his pack. Would we be able to hack the antlers off without killing this guy if we had him lay still and chopped horizontally at them to prevent pressure on his skull?"
>>
>>5697637
If we don’t have any wire I would have to keep his neck and skull carefully held to prevent his neck from crumpling, the trick is to not cut too close to the base of the horn I’ve seen deers in my home town keep theirs trimmed to prevent them getting into the way, hell some repurposing them into hoes picks and pitch forks, sometimes selling them to be used as a calcium supplements for both herbivore and carnivore alike although usually it’s ground into a powder at that point, the key is making sure the soft tissue isn’t damaged
>>
>>5697623
"The goddess gave the otter the magic to do these amazing things. It is her choice on how to use them."

>>5697637
"I understand that but I only ask that you spare my life. Yes. But to answer your other question. The one about Kuma the bear. He's our paladin of the woods who serves the goddess that our otter druid can only see. He currently rests in the yellow cave."
>>
>>5697640
>Ursus gently cranes the head between his arms and cushioning the head and neck to prevent the neck bones from just imploding from force. It is uncomfortable and it probably is setting off fear instincts that his animal ancestors remember of bears using their deadly embrace
>>
>>5697646

>>
>>5697640
"Good to know. Hold him carefully then, I'm gonna do it when you've got him secure." Mog ordered. He was confident that with Ursus's instruction he could get through this without further unnecessary bloodshed.

>>5697641
"Thank you. Perhaps I can talk to this fellow, clear up this issue between us, we both have amends to make with how this played out. Now hold still, this may hurt." Mog said.

He was grateful that this guy was more cooperative than the weird horny freak from earlier. There were many grievances the party had with this group, the kidnapping, the owlbear attacks, the horrific fate of the other 'trespassers' of the forest, but hopefully it could be resolved. The guilt of the accidental murders lay heavy on Mog's mind, only the absurdity of the events throughout this tumultuous situation and the contradictory feeling of satisfaction at enacting revenge on the kidnappers provided ease from the burden.

Following his wise bear companion's instructions he carefully aimed a hacking cut a modest distance above the base of the deer's horns.

>Cut the deer's horns, following Ursus's instructions.

Yeah, for real. Sorry about vanishing again, had to help around the house. Kinda tired from the heat, gonna have to stop here, we've already gone past the time we normally go through anyways. I'll archive this tomorrow. I'll see you all next Tuesday, provided everything goes well. Thanks for running the game QM, and thanks everyone else for playing!

Thread archived, don't forget to upvote! See you all next Tuesday or whenever!

There should still be drawings by Ursus for Kinny and I that can be used for the OP thumbnail from the previous thread. Though one has to be rotated.
