Your name is David "Gunny" Rockefeller, no relation.
A veteran of the united states marine corps, you find yourself in a far-out situation after an all-too-close encounter of the third kind!

In the last thread you held the turret control room while the Metal Gear, Star-Fall and drone ships took care of the station's defense fleet, taking them completely by surprise after your stealthy invasion.
After Sanig and Gildur came to your aid and cleared out the remaining troops assaulting your position, you in turn went to relieve SHODAN and Cylia, who had been facing some dangerous opponents themselves.

After defeating the last remaining Cyborg there, you came to learn that Cylia had been injured while fighting, and lost her hand.
Wasting no time, you brought her back to the ship and went looking for Doctor Lyna, a medical specialist you once encountered who still seems to be on the station.

Now you find yourself in the Dark Star refugee camp down in Zakera ward, delivering medical supplies as an excuse to get a face-to-face with her.
Will the doctor be able to save Cylia's hand? What sort of troubles are the few remaining people of Xebric station facing, and will you help them? Find out now, on Humanity, Fuck Yeah!

Setting the crate down by the staging area, you unlock it and pop it open with a hiss as the hermetic seals release.
One of the nurses wearily looks up at the relative treasure trove of medicine and supplies you've brought, and smiles.

"Oh, thank the gods... if we lost another patient due to a lack of Stimulax, i think i would have gone crazy." He mutters.

The nurse forces himself to his feet and roughly shakes the other two, forcing them to wake up.
He directs their attention to the crate, and their mood immediately brightens.

They practically ignore your hulking form, running past you to the supplies.
After a moment they realize they aren't nearly strong enough to drag the crate anywhere, so they start grabbing the supplies themselves and immediately begin sorting them onto the shelves.

One of them opens a shock-proof case and immediately exclaims to the others.

"Look at this, it must be a whole liter of Baccu-Wash!"

"Get that over to bed 19." One of the other nurses orders. "Her abdomen was sliced open, she's going to need a lot of it."

As the nurses return to their work with renewed vigor, you turn your attention to the figure behind the curtain.
It has no unique features, an unusual, particularly humanoid appearance.

Gently pulling the curtain back, you see the person you were looking for. Doctor Lyna, who's elbow deep in a patient.
He's covered in cuts to the point that he looks as if he's been through a blender, but you can see she's sealed most of them using polymer glue.

A temporarily solution to stop blood loss, you assume.
They probably ran out of styptics a long time ago, considering how many people are injured here.

"Shit." She curses, pressing buttons on a machine with still-bloodied hands.

The patient she's working on is a a Lycan. One of few species that actually has red, iron-based blood like you do.
Most species have blue, copper-based blood. Some use other metals, but copper is by far the most common.

But that's why, you can tell from the color of his skin that he's not doing so hot.
Around his chest where he's been shaved for the surgery, he's white as a sheet. Not only that, he's bleeding far slower than he should be. He's anemic.

"If you don't get his BP back up, he's going to die." You tell her.

"I know that, damn it! We're out of artificial blood, i can't..."

Lyna quickly turns around to look at you.

"...Who the hell are you? Why are you back here?" She demands, looking upset.

"I came here to deliver medical supplies." You answer.

"Great. Any blood?" She replies tersely.

An alarm goes off, from the machine connected to the patient.
Looking closely, you can see that his heartrate is highlighted in red. It seems to be dangerously slow.

"Afraid not."

"Then get the hell out. I need to... at least try to save this dumbass." She hisses.

>Alright, i'll leave you to it.

Synthetic blood is also a thing which we can possibly synthesize (plasma with something to carry oxygen), but if it really came down to it, we can offer her... a shot of our precious bodily fluids. If we're worried about our DNA data getting out we can possibly purify it so only the essential bits are in there
>>
>>5732382
Your blood would probably kill him.
>>
>>5732383
Ah right, blood type. So we're going to have to process the blood regardless. I guess it'd be easier to find a lycan donor.
>>
>>5732383
>>5732385
... or we can just put the guy on ice, too. Triage; the most urgent cases can be stuffed into our freezers.
Longer term, we can work out how to create create hemoglobin and plasma in our fabricators. Imagine a blood dispenser that works like a soda machine at a fast food joint
>>
>>5732385
>Ah right, blood type
I mean, yes, but there's also the problem of the fucking species barrier, man. Try putting tiger blood in a person, they'll get sick, too. Only very specific pairings of animals can actually share blood for means of circulation as far as I'm aware.

If we had time we could get a chemical readout of his blood, isolate the plasma portion, run up to our shitty chem-fab and force it to shit out some artificial stuff for him. Probably. I don't know how these dang machines work. Just think about the compounds really hard, hold a picture of it up in front of us as we do it. It'll work. Maybe.

You momentarily consider simply stabbing the man with an epinephrine injector, but there's probably about a 50% chance his heart would just explode if you did that.
Instead, you decide to make the doc an offer.

"I can put him on ice, until you have the blood packs you need." You tell her.

"...On ice? You have cryostasis pods?" She asks, immediately stopping her work to focus on you.

"I do."

"How many?" She asks, getting uncomfortably close. She has a really intense look on her face.

The reality is, if you count all the ones on the drone ships out there, you probably have enough for every survivor on the station.
Not counting the feds and station guards, naturally.

"How many do you need?"

Lyna pauses as she considers things. Her eyes drift over to the other patients resting in their cots.

"Twelve." She eventually decides. "No, maybe thirteen. But, there's no way you'd have..."

"I have enough." You interrupt. "But i need you to perform emergency surgery on one of my men in exchange."

You half expected her to get upset at the fact that you're bartering with her patients' lives, but she doesn't miss a beat.

"Very well. I can't promise anything until i've seen the patient and the extent of their injuries, but i will make the attempt. Bring them to me... after you've gotten this one into the cryopod."

That easy, huh? Well, you're not complaining.
After confirming a few things, Lyna quickly places a large, gelatinous bandage over the patient's surgical opening, which will apparently keep all his organs in for transport.

Two men come by to carry the patient via handmade stretcher, and you head back towards the ship to complete the transfer.
Only one problem. You still can't fit back up the stairs in your power armor.

Rather that dealing with having to find a way up there, you simply radio ahead to Gildur and tell him what's going on.
You don't like having strangers on your ship while you're not there, but Gildur and Kyla can handle themselves well enough, and the ship has both internal and external defenses if it comes down to it.

Well, half the shit in there is liable to kill the whole crew if they stole the ship and started fucking around in there anyways.
You chuckle at the thought of some asshole sneaking onto your ship and accidentally opening the wraith jar, just to get his fucking soul sucked out.

You take the moment of downtime while that transfer is happening to radio SHODAN and Sanig, to get an update on their situation.
According to them, things have gone almost completely quiet. Reports from the AI Drone pilots are that most station forces have been quelled, and those that remain are currently in hiding.

Apparently you really did catch them with their pants down, because there are still a lot of completely unused war assets sitting around in crates, and even fighter craft and small ships sitting in the docks.

They didn't know what hit them until it was too late.

Time to check in with Nena, if she's done, then please vote [1] to load her into the station controls
>>
So, when will the cruisers and destroyers arrive? Or they are here and outside the perimeter of the lasers¿? I forgot
>>
>>5733429
the second one. there are 3(i think) ships just outside the range of the defenses. nena is torturing the vicecaptain to get codes to talk to them and lure them into a trap
>>
>>5733475
It's more like forcefully chatting with him, really. Hopefully not loudly enough to make his brain melt.
>>
>>5733475
You have no idea.
They could be nearby, or they could take weeks to get here.

There is currently one troop carrier, two frigates and a destroyer sitting just outside of the range of the station's automated defenses.

>>5733358
She's not done, she just started. And you can't just simply "load her into the station controls".
The station was not designed to be controlled by an AI, and the systems aren't tightly integrated like they are in a ship.

It's not impossible to make it happen, but it'll take a lot of work. Refitting existing equipment, running lots of cables and so-on.
>>
Can't wait until we visit earth will love to see what home is like after MCs adventure.
>>
>>5733623
To be fair, I think the description of she loaded into the Metal Gear and got any functionality out of it when it was a Frankensteined monster before and after David got it going made me think she could do a decent job here too.
If there's manually operated machinery only that can't be automated then that's where responsibility can be delegated to some unemployed guy/

I forget how the timescale goes though.
>>
>>5733787
Anon, the Metal Gear was built around SHODAN to begin with. It was a highly specialized and finely-tuned machine that David wrecked the shit out of.
It became a frankenstein's monster due to the countless repairs, retrofits and 'upgrades' that have been made to it, and all the trickery done to keep it's systems running despite technically being broken beyond repair.

In the station's case, the physical infrastructure simply isn't there. It will have to be built, even if it's just nigger-rigged temporarily.
>>
>>5733827
I guess the station doesn't have reliable enough internet/intranet for her to invade. Or commands cannot be reliably sent from a central computer outwards... as in, computers sends read-only data with no ability to remotely input commands
>>
>>5733827
Maybe Dark Star and Nena can run it together after the military op then, using whatever means at their disposal. I just want her to be a recurring character every time we check back into the station while building the carrier later, feeding us complaints about how no one in the void likes her song and the scrubbers in basement 4G are playing up again~
Assuming we survive this encounter.

Those will be useful. We better not make the same mistakes and get those in working order when possible
>>
>>5733974
I agree. We cannot wholley rely on the defense lasers. That'll work once probably. Maybe we should call it in and get some men in those craft.
>>

Before too long, the two men come back carrying the same makeshift stretcher, this time with Cylia laid out on it.
A third man with an uncomfortable look on his face trails shortly behind, carrying Cylia's severed hand.

Gildur calls shortly afterwards to apologize. Apparently he nearly forgot to turn down the gravity, which probably would have ended with the first guy who stepped in dropping the patient.

After telling Gildur not to apologize for something that didn't happen, you follow right beside Cylia all the way back to the makeshift hospital.
When you get there, you hear a woman groaning loudly as a nurse sprays something into an open wound on her stomach. It seems like the nurses are back to working on patients.

"Is that the patient?" Dr.Lyna asks, apparently having washed herself up a bit. She's changed clothes and put on a fresh pair of surgical gloves.

"She is. I'll be observing the surgery, i'm sure you understand."

"As long as you aren't in the way. And don't touch anything, that armor looks filthy."

The two men carrying her transfer her over to the table and are excused. Dr.Lyna takes her severed hand from the third man, who shakes his hands off like he just got the cooties.
You can see Lyna's expression change as she looks over the hand, which is still in it's armored glove. Only the shockingly clean-cut section of her bone and muscle is visible.

"A caithan, is it?" She mumbles.

She carefully peels the glove off Cylia's hand and tosses it aside, turning it over for a few seconds before placing it in a plastic bin full of some liquid.
She then tries to pull of Cylia's helmet, only to find that it's latched on tightly and can't be removed.

"Can you do something about this?" She asks.

You gently press on the two outer release mechanisms and, after pressing them three times, hold them down for a few seconds. That allows you to remove her helmet.
As it slides off, you see Cylia's face, etched with pain. She's medicated, but probably still in a lot of pain. The cryopod probably made her nauseous as well. Poor girl must be feeling awful.

Lyna places a mask over her mouth and nose, which leads to a small machine on the floor next to her. She places a small vial of medicine into the machine, which begins vibrating as it seems to vaporize the medicine.
After a few moments, Cylia seems to relax somewhat.

Next, Lyna opens the drawer of what seems to be a machinist's tool chest, revealing a pile of medical tools. From that pile, she grabs a scalpel and begins trying to cut Cylia's combat suit off.
That doesn't go to plan. The razor-sharp scalpel can't seem to find purchase against the tough weave and plasteel armor plates.

"...How in the hells did her arm get severed, if she was wearing this?" She asks.

"Cyborgs." You reply.

"No, that doesn't explain much. This cut is far too clean for it to have been simple brute force."

My guy she's had her hand severed. Very cleanly. Knowing how it happened probably won't make a difference in this situation. Like knowing a guy blew his fingers off with fireworks instead of blowing them off by holding onto his pistol as it fired doesn't change how they're going to try and salvage the hand.

We have no reason to suspect warp metal leaves some sort of pollutant or toxins in the body that need to be treated.

I'm not saying don't tell her, just that it's a little weird to focus on.

"It was a blade, most likely made from warp metal." You explain.

"Warp... metal?" She asks, bewildered. "As in, FTL drive cores? That material?"

"Precisely."

"I've... never heard of a weapon being made from that before. You didn't...?"

Yeah, you can tell from the tinge of fear in her eyes what she's thinking.

"The federation, yes."

She wants to facepalm so hard right now, but settles for wiping her forehead with the back of her wrist as she sighs.

"Why, exactly? What good does it do to piss them off?"

Lyna heads back to her toolbox, and this time comes back with a sonicator.

"What good does it do to sit here and wait for death? Did you think rescue was coming?"

She's about to start cutting Cylia's suit off when you stop her.

"It was supposed to be. Reinforcements from Dark Star, supposedly. Is that you, by any chance?"

Rolling Cylia over, you show her a zipper than runs along the back.
She rolls her eyes and starts stripping Cylia down, only to find that she's wearing a skinsuit underneath.

"...Seriously? Another suit? Is this more armor?"

"Not quite. Your scalpel will work on that."

As she continues peeling off Cylia's outer armor, she notices her physique.
You can see her looking Cylia over closely, and after the armor is off she even begins massaging her muscles.

"Incredible physique... i've never seen a Caithan with definition like this, even amongst their military. What sort of training has she undergone to produce such results?"

"Doctor. Her hand, if you would."

"Yes, but..."

"Doctor." You urge, just a bit more aggressively.

Lyna sighs, and takes the scalpel back to hand.
She carefully removes a segment of Cylia's skinsuit, up to the bicep.

After that, she prepares an area and injects what you assume to a local anesthetic, along with some antibiotics.

She takes a moment to disinfect her scalpel, then begins slicing the skin open along Cylia's forearm, exposing her muscles and tendons.
It's pretty nasty, and you don't particularly enjoy watching it. But Lyna seems to focus in on her work now, and begins a long, slow procedure that turns out to be quite interesting.

She had to fish out the severed tendons that had pulled back into her forearm, then use several different types of medicine including what she called an 'instant stem cell kit' to prepare the various tissues for reattachment.

All the important bits (such as nerves, veins and arteries) were manually reconnected, but the muscle and bone were essentially able to be 'glued' back together.
You've actually used some of that stuff on Cylia before, a type of injectable gel that can reconnect a cleanly broken bone in no time. Bone gel, as it's colloquially called.

The surgery takes two and a half hours, during which time you lock the joints of your suit and essentially just stand there, watching.
Lyna doesn't make any funny moves though, and completes the surgery without issue.

You watch as she swabs the edges of Cylia's surgical cuts with a medicine that promotes cell growth, then seals the wounds over with an antibacterial polymer film and finally wraps the whole forearm in gauze to protect it.

"It's done." She declares with a heavy sigh. "It'll take a day or two for the nerves to reconnect properly. Until then, her hand will be numb."

"That easy, huh?"

"Naturally. I take pride in my work."

Yeah, that's not really what you meant.
Back on earth, even if a limb is reattached it'll never be as strong as it once was, if you can even use it at all.

You'd be looking at a lifetime of disability. It's not really a matter of skill, but the incredible medicines she's using.
Those weren't the basics that you brought. It was the sort of thing you could only find in a hospital. Half that shit is infused with nanomachines.

"So, you never answered me before. Are you the reinforcements we were waiting on?" She asks, removing her gloves and scrubs.

Nearly her whole body seems to be covered in scales. The only stretch of exposed skin she has starts from just under her breasts, and continues down to her nethers.
She doesn't seem bothered in the slightest at undressing in front of a stranger, and you don't bat at eye at this point either.

"I am, in a sense."

"What sort of sense?" She asks, pulling on a fresh set of scrubs. "Who are you, really? I've never seen a mercenary with gear like yours before. Nor one willing to fight the federation head to head."

"Do you really want to know?"

"Yes, obviously." She answers, again without hesitation.

Now fully clothed, she walks over to you and begins looking your armor over.
However, she quickly loses interest and goes back to checking Cylia out. She must be more interested in biology than technology.

"There's a saying on my homeworld. 'Curiosity killed the cat'. It's not always a good idea to stick your nose into other people's business."

"Yes, perhaps you're right. I simply can't help myself at times." She admits. "What fantastic bone density this girl has... and her muscles are like steel cables. I had trouble sticking her back together because of it."

"It's gravity training." You admit, hoping to appease her curiosity at least a bit.

"Gravity... you mean artificial gravity, correct? Of course, some military forces use intense artificial gravity to train their troops, yes. That makes sense. How high was it?"

You tell her, and although she doesn't seem shocked, she does raise a brow.

"I see. Perhaps that explains the elevated protein content in her blood. Muscle damage, high blood pressure, an enlarged heart... she must be living in those conditions near constantly."

Wait, seriously? Shit, that doesn't sound good.
Lyna, apparently having been satisfied with your simple explanation, begins to leave without another word.

Going less than 1 G for us is detrimental to our health. Going outside of the standard for wherever your species was born is bad for your health in the long term. It may take months or even years to see it, but it adds up.

>>Ask more about about Cylia's condition. You want to know if she, or the others, need treatment.
>>
>>5735965

You stop her by placing your heavy hand on her shoulder.

"Hold it."

Lyna stops and turns back to face you.

"What do you mean her heart is enlarged?"

She smirks.

"Oh, it's nothing too serious... probably. An enlarged heart can be the result of intense and prolonged exercise, in which case it may not be an issue..."

"Or?"

You know that severe tissue damage can cause proteins to spill into the blood, causing all sorts of organ damage, particularly in the kidneys. If she's working out too much and damaging her muscles as a result, you need to know.

"Or, it could be the result of living in excessively high-gravity conditions, forcing her heart to pump harder in order to move blood around her body. It could also be protein buildup, or any number of other issues. Without testing, who's to say?"

You see what's happening here. Knowing what she's like, and seeing that look on her face. She's taken an interest in Cylia.

"How long would it take you to perform those tests?"

"Right now? It's impossible. I'd need more of my equipment from the hospital. All i have here are some basic tools, including the vitals monitor here."

She pats the machine Cylia's hooked up to with a sort of fondness, as if it's a beloved pet or something.

"And if you did have them?"

"Oh, it'd be no problem at all. A little injection of some exploratory nanomachines and we'd have our readouts in a matter of minutes."

Right... a lot of doctors use nanomachines to catalog any sort of damage or abnormalities rather than going in for surgery.
Theoretically, that's something simple enough that you could do it yourself, if you knew what kind of equipment you needed.

Guys why the fuck are we giving her so much with little to no gain? We are on a crisis and you want to do R&D with Cylia.
What she is developing are chronic diseases characteristic of young adults that go through intense excercise and consume creatin, protein, aminoacids, hormone therapy... only to die of a heart attack at 30 years old Rest in peace brazza and/or cause a glomerulopathy.

Our janitor is already on blood thinners. A band-aid solution is to get Cylia on those until the FUCKING STATION TAKEOVER ends. And we kill the mutants and burn the tumours. And we finish the carrier. And those insects that are now in the tunnels laying eggs... please let loose princess already she deserves the spotlight

I mean, if we're not doing anything else at the moment, why not?
I don't get why people are so guarded towards her; she's talented, sharp, and curious. These are all good traits in a doctor. The only potential problem I could see with her is that of loyalty as we haven't had much interactions with her. Given what's currently happening, however, she can't be too pleased with the fed, and the fact that she's still here likely means she doesn't have much of a future in the federation any way. We just need to suss out her backstory and some loved ones and we should be good to go.
She seems like she'll be sticking around with how things are going, and while she may not join our crew, it's good that we "recruit" and get her invested in our side.

Medical professionals aren't about this sort of thing, and even if she did have a cloaca (we just visually confirmed, anyway), what's the big deal? Conceptually the anus is more gross because a cloaca is actually meant for such purposes (among other things), and before people start complaining about bacteria, these alien habitats and the aliens inhabiting might as well be sterile as far as human biology is concerned. If anything she should be worried about catching something from us, considering how much of the human body is anything but "human".

We are in a middle of a fucking siege.
This IS a serious problem but we have to deal with immediate threats first.
Imo we should investigate this for all of our crew members, if possible immediately after this whole fiasco. We have to know if any complications could arise because of this if or when we visit earth or when operating in high G environments.
>>
>>5736909
About looting the hospital, Im more on the side of letting the station dwellers keep the equipment.
Im thinking about scanning important equipment and other stuff even if its guarded by FED copyrights.

We could just jailbrake it with our other AIs since our crew members are already working on the carrier project.
We have plenty of competent AIs on hand
to try this, maybe get some pointers from Sanig and Kyla, just to get started.

Then share the acquired data with Dark star so they can use it to build it if need be.

i don't think they're worthless, but what can they possibly do? they're a bunch of outcasts and juryrigg stuff. what you're asking is the equivalent of wondering why the sommalian pirates don't directly assault a US navy vessel. the only one that is capable of infiltrating the ships is david and well, we are already dealing with an equivalent shitshow on the station right now

"I'll swing by the hospital if i can. If you prepare a list of-"

Before you even finish your sentence, she grabs a holopad and slaps it against your chest armor.

"Beautiful! Make sure you don't miss anything. In particular, there should be a trunk located in my office. Above all else, make sure that gets back to me."

"What does it contain?"

"Medicine, obviously. Oh, and and let me know if you see a man with red skin and arms that reach down to his feet."

"...Alive, or?"

"Well, he wouldn't be alive if he was still there. I'm afraid the evacuation was quite hectic. However, i'm certain you can handle a few mutants. Right?"

Lyna runs her pointer finger along the surface of your armor, flicking her finger up into the air and wagging it as she walks off to assist her nurses.
A short while later, she gathers up a few men and declares that they're moving the critical patients, at which point they run off to gather even more men.

Most of the patients are capable of walking with assistance, but those that aren't are either carried off by hand or on makeshift stretchers.

You'll have to radio ahead once again and inform Gildur of the situation.

And while that's all going on, you grab Cylia, who's still under anesthesia, and carry her back towards the ship, princess style.
You're forced to hand her off to Gildur when you get back to the apartment building though, as you can't get up the stairs and back to the ship without breaking something.

Stepping back outside while Gildur trudges up the stairs, you look around and simply don't see a good way up.
Well, except for one, maybe.

There's a ventilation duct on the side of the building. You try to climb it by digging your fingers into the metal, but it almost immediately detaches from the building. It won't support your suit's enormous weight.

"Shit." You curse.

Looking up, you see the sheet metal walkways bridging most of the buildings together.
Those clearly won't support your weight either. Maybe you could jump the gap? Honestly, you've never really tried jumping in this suit before.

Deciding to test it, you step out onto the street and pick up a bit of a running start, then overdrive the suit's servos and make a leap across flat ground.
It's... less than impressive. Although the trench you dig into the pavement on impact certainly is.

You didn't expect a fucking doorway of all things to be such a damned problem. Usually it's not, but here you are.

>Fuck it, head up the stairs and do your best kool-aid man impression.
>One of the buildings next to this one is slightly higher. You could probably make the jump from there.

Dude time isn’t exactly abundant right now, and the station is already torn the fuck up, who cares about a few broken walls
>>
>>5738344
>One of the buildings next to this one is slightly higher. You could probably make the jump from there.
We don't necessarily have to land on the roof, a lower story is fine too, and we'll just force our way up the rest of the way. Just want to make sure we're not wrecking too many structurally important parts of the building (like door ways), especially near the bottom of the building.
Also, is it possible to jump up window-to-window (such as thrusting ourselves up with our arms via window ledges)? Or jumping between the walls between two buildings?
>>
>>5738435
Door ways aren't actually structurally important. While you may need to worry about studs in the wall next to them, these buildings seem to be concrete commie bloc style. So the doorways probably don't have any load bearing parts near them. And even still, as long as you don't go through too many walls it'll be fine. You can knock out pretty much every single doorway in a building and it'll still stand. It's corners and center points of walls that usually have the most load bearing parts.
>>
>>5738344
>>Gildur seems to be a pretty decent pilot. Just head up to the roof from a different building and have him hover next to it while you board.

>>
>>5738435
You can try, but you're very, very heavy.
>>
>>5738344

Calling Gildur up once again, you have him look around for a nearby building with a roof access that you'll actually fit through without causing any damage.
Fortunately there's one or two nearby that are tall enough for the Metal Gear to hover next to them while you board.

Still, you're forced to wait while the patients are being loaded. For about half an hour.

During that time, while you're sitting up on the roof, you receive a call from Asta, informing you that with the remaining federation ships having gone silent, they're choosing to land on the station and reinforce your crew.
The majority of the drone fleet remains outside, active and ready to fight, with only one or two sitting at the docks, acting as a control center for the killbots.

However, you order for one drone ship with plenty of empty cryopods to dock and prepare for loading of passengers.

The station is damaged and swarming with mutants, but the local crew and feds have been mostly wiped out, and things have gone quiet.
Had the station still been in good shape and fully crewed as it was when you left, you doubt things would have gone this well. You'd probably still be fighting.

Likewise, if you had come any later, the whole place would probably already be gone.
Well, not quite gone... but with no atmosphere and stripped of all it's critical facilities, it would have been no more useful or valuable than any other rock.

Now though, it's essentially yours. You do still have potential federation reinforcements to worry about, but it doesn't seem like there's another immediate threat.
That allows you to relax somewhat, but you're still on high alert. Anything could happen. You have no idea what fallback plans your enemies may have in place.

As Gildur slowly and carefully brings the ship around to the edge of the building and opens the cargo bay door, you make the short hop across and land with a thud, causing the ship to list towards the building from your weight.
Fortunately, Gildur is able to gain some altitude and keep the Metal Gear from striking the side of the building.

Once you're through the airlock, you immediately see three patients sitting around in the cargo bay, looking quite ill.
One man is missing an arm, and has burns on his torso, leading up his neck and covering part of his jaw. Another, a reptilian sort, is slumped over against a stack of boxes. He seems to have lost his eyes, but otherwise seems fine.

The third one is a heavily pregnant red-skinned woman sitting by the hall door, who clearly seems to lack any external injuries. She smiles gently and waves up at you.

Weren't you supposed to be escorting patients who were near death?
Well, whatever. You guess Lyna just wanted her out of there. It doesn't make any difference to you.

The medbay is where the remainder of the patients seem to have been loaded, 13 in total. And their conditions are far, far worse. You doubt all of them can be saved, speaking form experience.

You poke your head into the medbay while Gildur is flying you back up to the entrance.
Only about half of the patients in there are even conscious, with few of them caring enough about your presence to go through the effort of lifting their heads.

A lot of their wounds look like they were inflicted by mutants. Lots of cuts, scratches, acid burns and missing limbs. By all rights, they should be dead already. Lyna must have kept them going.
There are also some injuries that are clearly 'manmade' for lack of a better term. Phaser burns, knife wounds, and unfortunately a few plasma burns as well. You can only imagine a good few of those broken bones belong in this category.

Some of these injuries wouldn't be so bad if they were human, but they aren't. Those that are here are mostly predator species, but they still aren't human. They just won't go into shock and die quite so easily.

Chell, who's still strapped to the operating table, appears to be unconscious. Or perhaps he's simply asleep.
You'd like to ask Nena how she's getting along, but you don't want any of the people here knowing more than they need to, so you'll leave it for now.

You're about to go pester Gildur for a bit, when Kyla meets stops you in the hall.

"David, i finished replacing the components in your helmet." She says, offering the helmet to you.

"Thanks, but i can't wear it inside the power armor. Can you set it on my nightstand or something?"

"Ah, fine... geeze." She sighs.

"What's the matter?"

"Oh, nothing. I just can't stand this low gravity. I've spent so much time on the ship, i had forgotten how awful it is. I feel like i can't control my strength." She explains.

Ah, right. The gravity on the ship has been lowered for the patient's sake. You didn't really notice.

"Well, it'll be back up to full after... eh, well, maybe not."

You're considering turning the ship's gravity down, for the crew's sake as well. Maybe not all the way to station gravity levels, but maybe half a gee? or .7, like Cylia's homeworld.
Earth's gravity is just too high for anyone but Kyla or yourself. Sanig takes care of it in his own way, but Gildur and Cylia have just been living in it.

It's true they've gotten a lot stronger as a result, but it's not worth destroying their health for.
You might need to put them on a diet, as well. Your cooking might be more flavorful, but their bodies can't handle all the fat and carbs packed into whatever you cook.

Just as you're thinking that, Princess comes waddling out of your bedroom, dragging her belly along the ground.
She passes you by and heads for the mess hall, where she's got a big bowl full of scrambled dodo eggs waiting for her.

Yeah, you really need to do something about that. She's not just fat at this point, she's obese. Being stuck on the ship isn't good for her.

You can't help but sigh, thinking about the sorry state of your crew right now.
You gotta take better care of their health, for real.

>>5739466

>>
Once things settle down, we could make a robot dodo for Princess to chase around an obstacle course.
As for the food situation, there's plenty of low fat and low carb options that are still plenty flavorful.
>>
They just won't go into shock and die quite so easily.
this sounds like humans would go into shock and die not the aliens I thought that is how it works. No?
>>
>>5739734
Non-predator species have a bad habit of simply dying out of shock when injured too severely.
That could mean getting shot, losing a limb, being burned or otherwise experiencing too much pain, or simply getting sick.

They die if you look at them too hard.
Predator species are much more hardy, but not on the level of a human.

Generally speaking, the harsher of a world you came from, the more pain and suffering you can endure without your spirit simply leaving your body.
Oddly enough, the dodos, being from a garden world with no predators or hostile bacteria, cannot easily die of shock. They never evolved that mechanism.
>>
>>5739910
They may not die of shock itself, but their response to it (or lack thereof) is probably just as lethal in practice.
It's a little strange to think about again, but man...the rest of the Universe has had it WAY too easy.

You prepare for the patient transfer by printing a couple of fabric stretchers on the weapons fab. They only take a few minutes each, so they're done well before you get back up to the docks.
And once you do arrive, you find that the Star-Fall has already docked there, and several crewmembers are idling about outside the ship.

According to them, Gron has already taken a team and headed for the control rooms. Apparently SHODAN has been in contact with him and his crew, and has informed them of the various threats and other critical information.
That just leaves you with offloading the patients, which Gron's remaining crew is happy to help with. Which is nice, because it would have taken a while otherwise.

Maybe you could have reprogrammed some killbots to help with it, but it would be more of a pain than it's worth. By the time you were done updating them, you could have finished loading them up.

The drone ship you called down for the job is sitting atop a large landing pad rather than sitting in the maglocks, apparently because the control tower was destroyed as soon as the assault began. So that's not working right now.
But that's fine. The landing platform still extends, and Gron's crew assists you and Gildur in getting the patients loaded up. The patients, however, do seem a bit wary of the whole thing.

After all, both the Metal Gear and Star-Fall are fairly patchwork-looking from the outside by now, with mismatched thrusters, patches done to repair battle damage, and in your case, a whole section of the ship has been replaced.
And then when they get to where they're going, they're met with a bunch of federation ships instead of whatever they may have been expecting.

Needless to say, some of the more lively patients took issue.

"No! No way in hell i'm getting on a fed ship!" A man screams. "You sons of bitches, you're trying to haul me off! I've been tricked!"

Although badly injured, he continues kicking and screaming even as Gron's crew try to pull him into the ship. He's going to end up hurting himself even worse, so you end up jabbing him with a hypo-spray full of sedatives.
The sedatives shoot straight into his bloodstream through the skin and are delivered almost directly to his brain, causing him to pass out in mere seconds.

However, the fit he threw and you having to sedate him has put doubt into the hearts of the others, who now look on with worry in their eyes.

>If i wanted all of you dead, i'd just kill you. Get moving.
>Yes, they're federation ships. They can be captured like any other, and they're ours now. No need to worry.

Your voice, low and growling through the power armor's voice modifier, booms as you speak to the crowd.

"Yes, they are federation ships. However, with enough effort, they can be captured like any other. These ships belong to us now, and you aren't going to be carted off to some federation camp."

Some of the patients look between eachother, seemingly looking for affirmation from one another before making their decision.
Several of them however, simply go ahead and walk up the ramp.

Two sorts, you reckon. Those who are simply too tired to fight, or those who already believe they're going to die.

Of those who can stand, four men and the pregnant woman from before still remain.

"...Can i really trust you?" One man asks.

"That's not for me to decide."

He seems annoyed at your response, but another man speaks up before he can complain.

"How do we know you're not just gonna kill us all once we're asleep?"

Stepping forwards, you brace up against the man. Ordinarily he'd be a head taller than you, but inside the suit you're a bit larger.

"Do you think i need to wait for you to sleep in order to kill you?."

The man nervously looks into what passes for 'eyes' on your helmet, actually just a couple of cameras behind some bulletproof glass.
His gaze drifts to the huge pack on your back, and the strange weapon slung over your shoulder. And then to the ships, and all the killbots and damaged buildings around him.

He looks like he's about to cry, but he stops himself.

"Whatever, man. Let's just do this."

You pat him heavily on the shoulder and walk past him, to face the last straggler.

"And what about you?" You ask the woman directly.

She smiles again. Her red skin and the horns on her head give her a sort of demonic look, but you get the feeling that she's a very gentle woman.
And of course, you don't sense anything unnatural from her. She just happens to look like that.

She gently rubs her bulging belly as she looks up towards you.

"I... don't think that miss Lyna would have sent us with you, if she thought you meant any harm. And besides, it can't be worse than being trapped down there, right?"

"You're probably right. Well, get a move on then."

You leave her and begin walking back to your ship, but she speaks once again.

"Thank you for rescuing us, Captain. I'm sorry, i have nothing left to repay you with."

Throwing your hand up, you wave her off without looking back.

"Hey, don't thank me till it's over."

...

Now back on your ship, you look over the empty medbay. Little streaks of fresh blood stain the floor here and there where the patients had laid, and Chell is still sleeping quietly.
Right about now, Gildur should be loading the last of the patients into their pods. After that, they'll do a few pre-programmed jumps out into deep space, and you'll have to go fetch them after this is all over.

But they'll be safe like that. If they stayed here, they might be in danger.
>>
>>5740816

Now you just need to decide on what exactly to do next.

>Get a status update from Gron. It's been a little while, and resistance is almost non-existent, so he might be at the hidden control station already.
>See if you can get a status update from Nena. You don't know if it's a good idea to interrupt her or not, but you'd like to know how things are going.

Toxins tend to have residuals, and how long they last is very unpredictable. Also we have to remember we're in an asteroid; a large, but still confined space (with no natural sunlight to boot). That shit will likely stick around until it's filtered either by a filter or a meatbag.

We should get a status report on those station defense lasers. Sanig gave them a head start but their engineers are going to make or break that play. Should we be pumping out bomb drones as a backup plan?

While you're on your way to the hospital, you decide to bother Gron for a moment and see how things are going.

When you contact him, it seems that he's just finished clearing out that tower leading up to the hidden ward.
Apparently there were a good few station guards there, holding the place... but they were overwhelmed by the killbots and couldn't hold on.

"So, what was in the tower?" You ask him.

["Nothing much. It was an office building through and through, from what we could tell. However, it does also serve as the elevator to this floor. We've never been able to go up here before."]

"How are the streets looking up there?"

["Barren. Except for a Quadwalker or two aimlessly roaming the streets, i don't see any soldiers."]

"Quadwalker?"

["They're large, quadrupedal machines used for patrolling dangerous areas. Normally they aren't equipped with heavy weapons, but we've encountered one already, which had a plasma cannon mounted on it's chassis."]

"Oh, those. Yes, we had a couple run-ins with them as well. They look pretty heavily armored, so try to avoid them if you can."

["Naturally. I'll let you know once we're at the-"]

["Captain?"] A second voice interrupts, on the same channel. It's the voice of Vex, who should be tailing Elynderr right now.

"Vex? Has something happened? We haven't heard from you in a while."

["Yes, i'm afraid. Elynderr has been holed up in a hideout for the past two hours, and i wasn't able to find a way inside. However, now he seems to be making his way somewhere. I believe he's trying to escape."]

"Where are you both?"

["The uppermost ward. It seems to be an area reserved for the rich and powerful. You'll need to climb a tower in the-"]

"Yes, yes. I'm aware, we've already been there. Did you catch that, Gron?"

["I did."] Gron affirms. ["We'll split into two groups, and send one after him. Javan, you lead."]

You hear the snake-like woman affirming her orders faintly in the background.

>Just keep an eye on him for now. Don't stick your neck out until backup arrives.
>Don't let him off the station for anything, Vex. I want to stomp him a new asshole at the end of this.

If the guy is trying to get off the station, we can just have a ship or two waiting on the surface to interdict him, or better yet, blow up his method of transport once he gets close enough to it for us to identify it.

On the ground front, we should reorganize our forces into sweeper teams, garrisons, and rapid response teams. Segment the space station into secured green zones, areas to be swept for survivors and major threats, and areas to be cordoned off for later. With the addition of checkpoints it would make control of the station more efficient, free up more forces, and make our response to threats more agile and effective.

"Alright, Vex. See if you can't get ahead of him. Disable his ship, his hovercar, whatever you can get away with. Just slow him down if you can."

["Understood."]

...

Some time passes, and you get closer to the hospital.
At the same time, you get another call from Gron, who has arrived at the entrance to the hidden control facility.

["Captain, what on earth happened here?"] He asks.

"What do you mean?"

["There's a field of bodies outside the entrance. Burnt corpses, minced flesh. The surface here looks as if it's been peppered with micrometeorites."]

"Oh, that. We had support from the Metal Gear during our extraction."

["...You used ship to ship weapons on them?"]

"What, are you gonna bitch at me? There's no such thing as a war crime, Gron. There are winners and losers, that's all."

["That's quite an extreme statement, Captain. But i do agree, in this case. The Federation will afford us no mercy, so it would be foolish to afford them any."]

"Shooting someone in the head is pretty extreme, Gron. But we're doing that too. Don't go getting soft on me, now."

["I think we both know that i'm rock solid, Captain."]

That's... yeah, you're not gonna pounce on that one. Too easy.

It's not long before Gron calls back again, to ask about the absolute carnage at and around the turret control room.
Seems like that's where he headed first, together with a couple of engineers who can assist in repairing the EMP damaged systems.

Then you get yet another call once they reach the other control room, and discover the remains of your roomba bomb.
Gron and his crew, who can be heard retching in the background, seem more and more repulsed each time.

What the fuck did they expect? You're not taking prisoners, it's few against many.

You tell him as much, and although he wants to complain, he can't find good reason to do so.
Of course you used explosives. You brought them for a reason, and you won easily because you had them. It's the same with using the Metal Gear as support.

What, are you supposed to listen to your enemy's complaints? Of course they're complaining, they're losing.

"Captain, we're here." Gildur calls out.

You turn your head and look out the window. The hospital is there, and it looks...
Well, it's intact anyways. Many of the windows are broken, but the structure seems undamaged.

The real problem is down below. Swarms of mutants shamble around like zombies in front of the hospital, and you can see them inside the hospital through the broken windows as well.
There's too many to count. It's incredible, honestly. How did Lyna manage to make it out of here? Was it this bad when she left?

"Bring us a little lower, Gildur."

"Aye, Captain."

Depending on how large the structure is and where the equipment is located, we can isolate different floors off from lower ones by destroying the stairs (I assume that even if there are elevators, they aren't working). From there clearing out the floors of mutants (basic ones, at least) should be fairly simple now that we are in power armor. From there we can load the equipment onto the ship either through the side of the building or through the roof (all at once, so the ship can patrol around while we gather the equipment at a loading point, thinning out the crowd and intercepting any larger or more dangerous beasts that can bypass the stairs).
>>

>>Just drop down and put your new gun and shield to the test.

"There's too many of 'em." You decide.

You'd run out of ammo before you could kill them all, and then who knows how long it could take to clear them out.
Who knows, you might end up being overrun. You'd like to think your armor would protect you until you could be rescued, but...

"It's alright, i've got a plan." You declare.

Calling Kyla over, you order her to sit on the turrets together with Dak.
The autocannon's already been used a few times, so you want to conserve ammo by sticking to the lasers. It's not like you're short on time here or anything, so it's fine.

"Just drop me onto the roof. Once i figure out where i need to go, i'm going to destroy the stairwell to prevent more of them from coming up."

"Are you sure, Captain? It looks like there's a lot of them inside." Gildur asks.

"Gildur, i've got a minigun on my back."

"Y-Yeah, i guess you're right..."

Gildur flies over to the hospital's roof and hovers just above the landing pad, allowing you to drop down without smashing through the ceiling.
As he flies off and the Metal Gear stars firing into the crowd down below, the three mutants that had been up here all focus on you instead of the ship.

You ignite your tower shield in response, and swing it down on the first mutant to charge at you.
The shield flashes with light and ripples in response to the force. You feel your suit bog down a bit as it draws a ton of power, but that only lasts an instant, and the shield holds.

What doesn't hold is the body of the mutant.

He folds in half, resembling something like a sausage that's been squished in the packaging. His internal organs spew out through his anus, and he's surely dead...
Only, he's not. Well, you're sure he will be shortly, but even in such a state, he's still trying to reach up and claw at you. These things really don't feel any pain at all.

The two remaining mutants stand side by side. They don't move until one of them roars at you, at which point both of them charge simultaneously.

It doesn't end any differently, though.
You swing your shield again, to the side this time. The crushing force of your blow shatters some of the mutants bones and sends it flying through the air, clear off the side of the building.
The other mutant you grab by the skull with your free hand and simply squeeze until you hear it pop. Normally that would be enough, but it continues to squirm in your grip until you close your hand entirely.

Half measures won't work when it comes to putting these things down. You have to either break them in such a way that they aren't a threat, or destroy the brain.
So your targets essentially boil down to the head, spine and legs.

Moving on, you head for the roof access doors to enter the building.
But you notice, these are just normal doors... not reinforced airlocks or anything like that.

You could probably roll this sheet metal up into a disposable club.

With a grin, you start ripping one of the doors off it's hinges.
As it so happens, there was a mutant standing behind it, which immediately attacks you.

A lupine type. It's claws and teeth fail to find purchase whatsoever against your titanium armor, and you sling it to the floor before planting your foot firmly in it's gut.
Knowing that won't be enough to kill it, you raise the door overhead and bring it's edge down on the creature's neck with both arms, shattering it's spine at the neck and killing it.

You find that the door bent quite a bit from the force of the blow. As you suspected, it's just hollow inside, and seems to be made out of aluminum... kind of like a baseball bat.

Getting down on one knee, you grab one end of the door and grip it tightly in your hands, rolling the door up at a slight angle like a newspaper into a simple caveman club.
It's fairly lightweight and you won't feel bad about breaking it or tossing it on a whim, but you can still rip someone in half with it quite easily.

Setting it on your shoulder, it scrapes against the barrel of your minigun.
Yeah, you wouldn't have any room to holster your big boy club because of the ammo pack you're wearing, which blocks the magnetic holster you'd otherwise be using.

Sometimes solutions are as simple and easy as improvising like this.

As you pass through the one remaining door, you find an empty stairwell.
The roof here is of course used to medevac patients, so it should lead straight into the hospital from here.

...And it does. Actually, it seems to lead straight into the surgery ward.

And oh man, it's bad.
Almost as soon as you walk through the inner doors, you're swarmed by a dozen redsang mutants.

Some of them leap through the air and cling onto you, others seem to be injured and can't attack quite so ferociously...
There's one crawling along the floor. Looks like a paraplegic. Just how many people were using this shit?

It does numb the user to pain, so if someone had a chronic injury... well.

Nevertheless, you can't save them now. All you can do is put them down.
One massive swing of your improvised club knocks half a dozen mutants through the air, and you ignite your hardlight shield a moment later.

The shield igniting crushes one mutant beneath it, much like you crushed one with the door a moment ago.
You swing your shield and knock away a majority of the remainder, even crushing two of them between your shield and the hospital wall. Their skin sizzles and burns against the hardlight, but they can't feel it.

You plant your feet and press against the shield, crushing them until they pop. At the same time, one of the mutants recovers from being flung away by the bat and charges you again, alone.
You swing your club straight down on top of it's head, crushing it's whole body down into an unrecognizable mess.

Then you grab the mutant clinging to your neck and shoulders by the head, crushing it in your grip and flinging the corpse ahead of you.

The corpse is flung forwards into the crowd ahead, knocking over several mutants who were in the middle of getting back to their feet.
You brace your hardlight shield and charge forwards, crushing mutants underfoot, knocking them aside with your shield and smashing them with your makeshift club.

The fight doesn't even last a minute.
The halls of the ward are painted with blood and gore, but many of them are still squirming.

You don't know if any of them are conscious enough to realize what's happening to them, but you take another minute to end their lives with a merciful blow to the head.

After that, you pull up a 3D map of the hospital on your holowatch.
The information Lyna gave you included the location of the storage rooms and other places where the items she needs are located, so you know where you should be headed at least.

The elevators aren't working due to the power outage, but the emergency lights are still functioning indoors, albeit dimly.
Instead you look for another staircase, and this time there actually is one.

It seems someone tried to barricade the doors to the stairwell, but you can see quite clearly through the glass windows that he didn't make it. They tore him to shreds.

It's no effort at all for you to simply rip the door off it's hinges and kick all the stacked up garbage out of the way.
As you make your way down, you check the map again and find that this stairwell leads all the way down to the ground floor.

However, the materials you need are only from the third floor and up. Below that is mostly exam rooms, check-in stations and non-medical facilities like the kitchen and laundromat.

There don't appear to be any mutants in the stairwell right now, possibly because of the ruckus the Metal Gear is making outside.
The mutants are more likely to simply jump out of the windows than to take the stairs, which means you have a free moment to do your job.

>Just set explosives in the stairwell and bring it down at the third floor.

The sooner we get back with these supplies and move on to the next task, the better. There'll be plenty of time to completely clear the station out once we're done.

If this is the quieter and quicker option. We'll have to clear the whole hospital later anyways. There's no guarantee that it'll stay cleared once we leave and we're on a bit of a time limit.

We are already here, plus the other solutions can be done without us and the armor

>Just set explosives in the stairwell and bring it down at the third floor.
We're just here to run a quick errand for someone, the issue of cleaning up these pests can be saved for later and be done by less important assets.
We're arguably the most capable individual in this crisis, we shouldn't be wasting time with janitorial work. There are definitely more important things we could be doing.
Besides, even if we clear out this particular building, there is no way to make sure it'll stay clear (unless we blow up the stairs) anyway. Save the thorough cleaning for later.
>>
>>5746688
We definitely don't want to be bogged down here while Elynderr gets away. Something that important is best handled personally. And even if we did fuck around in the hospital and waste time here, I'd rather do that by sweeping the area for survivors after we get the necessary supplies.

You consider things for a moment, and decide that it'll be better to clear out the entire hospital in the end.
The people left on this station are going to need more than what you can carry back on your own, and that means this place will have to be cleared out sooner rather than later.

What better time, and who better to do it than you, right here and now?
You're in your armor, and the Metal Gear is supporting you from the air outside, cutting down swaths of mutants by itself.

That makes your job as easy as it can get, doesn't it?

Gron's team will be arriving to support Sanig and SHODAN shortly, so you don't have to worry much about them anymore.
Vex and a few other Dark Star members will be taking care of Elynderr for you, so you don't have to worry much about that either.

And the feds sitting outside... well, they aren't moving. It's been a while already, and nothing's changed.
It could be that they're simply waiting on a contact from inside the station, which may or may not come. Maybe they won't be getting reinforcements.

It's not like they would have expected to need any, after all.

It could be that the troop transport ship out there is empty, or nearly empty. It might be the one that transported them here in the first place.
And they can't get near the station, because they know they'll be torn apart. So what are they supposed to do?

Well, all they can really do is try their luck against the drones, which is unlikely since most aliens aren't terribly suicidal, or fuck off to some other station nearby.
...Like Thekia. Might want to give Clank a call later, if the QED is still functioning properly.

Anyways, you've made your choice.

[/b]"Change of plans."[/b] You announce over the radio. [/b]"Let's clear the whole area out. It'll make things easier on us in the long run."[/b]

["Aye, Captain!"] Gildur replies back. It sounds like he's having fun with the laser turrets.

With new orders issued, you make your way down to the next floor and gently push open the stairwell doors.
On the other side, there are just a few mutants in the halls, but they seem agitated by all the noise. The sounds of other mutants who have been disturbed, now chittering and groaning and yelling.

They're looking around for the source of the disturbance, and then they see you.
It should be obvious what happens next.

A particularly large and muscular fellow is the first one to charge at you, and you respond by dropping your club to thrust your palm forward into his face, twisting your whole body as you force him to bend over backwards.
As his his head slams into and then through the concrete floor there's a slight resistance, you think, before his head pops like a watermelon and his body goes limp.

Another one rushes you a moment later. You turn your shield horizontally, using it's long lower half to sweep through the space in front of you as if it were an oversized blunt blade.
>>
>>5746929

The edge of your shield catches the mutant in the abdomen, and upon impact with the wall his entire body is bisected. Still, his top half crawls towards you until you stomp down on it to finish things.

The third mutant though, doesn't come at you immediately. No, it stand there, watching as you tear the other two apart.
Although it's body has warped somewhat, it's still a figure that's very familiar to you. A female caithan, albeit a bit more hairy and muscular than you're used to.

She seems wary, and refuses to come closer.
Ah, is it because you're in a hallway?

You step out of the hall and into the lobby area where several longer hallways connect.

As soon as you do, the caithan starts moving. She slowly circles around you, inching closer and closer until finally, she leaps at you.
The difference between her and the other mutants is like night and day. She's at least as fast as Cylia is during your spars, if not faster.

Surprisingly, her claws actually manage to bite into your titanium armor and leave four scratch marks down your suit's right arm.
She twists her body mid-air, re-orienting herself and planting her feet against the nurse's desk behind you in order to kick off and leap at you again.

You rapidly turn and attempt to thrust the bottom of your hardlight shield straight at her, but she actually manages to grab the edge and force it down, allowing her to vault over it.

That's actually pretty impressive. That said, you noticed the claws on her right hand were ripped out and her hands immediately started to smoke and burn when she grabbed the shield.
Not that it matters to her, you suppose.

She tries to kick you in the head as she passes over your left shoulder, resulting in a broken leg as she makes contact with your armored helmet.

Still, she lands firmly in a squat on her unbroken leg, sliding to a stop behind you while balancing herself with her arms.
Although she can't feel the pain, she can definitely tell something's wrong, because she glances down at her leg to confirm that it's broken.

You wonder, has this woman retained some of her consciousness, or is she simply being driven by instinct?

From one of the conversations we overheard earlier, I think the nanomachines were part of a super-soldier program with an exceptionally high failure rate (or else, simply just a failed candidate for a super-soldier program).
Regardless, that this particular nanite can enhance a regular(?) individual to this level of performance in low grav makes it and this specimen something worth studying.

You decide to try and draw this out some more, to see if you can determine whether or not it's worth trying to capture her alive.

To that end, you toss your makeshift club aside and turn off your tower shield.
However, that only seems to rile her up even more. Her fur stands on end, and she hisses at you.

...Do they do that normally? You don't really remember Cylia hissing at you a lot.

In any case, you spread your arms wide and start walking towards her.
The mutated woman growls deeply before kicking off with her good leg, in order to bound off the walls like a rubber ball.

Since she's only using one leg that's some pretty impressive power, even considering the station's low gravity.
You might be able to do something like that without your suit on, but it would be taxing for sure. You're pretty bulky.

You stop walking and watch as she hops around a few times, but refuses to come directly at you. It's almost like she's looking for something...

And you guess she finds it, because she changes direction suddenly and lands right next to the club you dropped.
She grabs it with both hands and swings it with considerable force, landing a solid blow on your helmet that rings both it and the club like a bell.

Of course, it does absolutely nothing to you on the inside, but it may have left a scratch or two on the surface.

She goes in for another swing, but this time you grab hold of the club with your right hand and use it to pull her towards you, where you deliver a (relatively) light punch to her gut.
It still sends her flying back into the nurse's desk, which breaks on impact. She continues tumbling through it and into the little nook area before coming to a stop against the far wall.

Seeming dizzied but otherwise unperturbed, she quickly crawls along the floor such that the counter hides her body from view.
In the few seconds it takes you to walk over there and peek through the hole you'd made, she's disappeared.

Well, you know better than that. She must have crawled out through one of the actual entrances.

Moments later, you feel something on your back. You can't quite turn your head far enough to see her, but you can see that she's currently trying to stab you in the neck with a scalpel.
You're not sure where she got that, but you think you've just about got an idea of her by now. Just reaching over your shoulder and feeling her leap off your back to escape is enough to confirm it.

Tool use. Conscious thought. Self-Preservation.

She's proved that she's retained all of that, at least to some degree.
She may be as feral as a wildcat right now, but who knows. Maybe you can calm her down.

And if not... well, she'll still make a good case study.
The only problem now is, how the hell do you capture her?

>You'll just have to break her arms and legs. She won't give up as long as she can still move.
>This is a hospital, isn't it? There must be some sedatives in one of these rooms.

Yeah, might be the best option. I bet that these mutants are highly resistant to various tranquilizers. Besides, most tranquilizers here are probably very dilluted, making them even less effective.

If this was a site of lesser repute and more degenerate disposition I'd suggest the other route of rendering her insensate. Putting the "fuck" into HFY.

Sometimes, simple is better.
Unfortunately, sometimes simple isn't so simple either.

You spend a solid five minutes running around, trying to grab hold of her, but the one thing this suit is seriously lacking is speed.
Yeah, it's more than a little bit heavy. You've already broken up the floor tiles in here quite badly from all this running around.

Honestly, it's not like you can't get up some decent speed after a while, but... the acceleration is the problem.

Against a fast-moving target in a confined space like this, you might as well have lead weights tied around your limbs.
...Actually, maybe that could work?

After a few more minutes of chasing her around, you fall to one knee and start panting loudly through your helmet's speaker, pretending to be tired.

The mutant doesn't seem to be worn out at all, and just watches you carefully.
She's still stalking around you rather than looking for a chance to escape, so you're pretty sure she'll pounce if you give her the opportunity.

Awkwardly, you sit down on your ass and cross your legs, trying to look like you're resting. However, you don't take your eyes off her.
You keep following her around the room, until eventually she manages to get around behind you, where you can't see her.

Nothing happens at first, but you're sure she'll pounce. It's just a matter of grabbing her once she does.
It's at times like this that you really wish you had a camera in the back of your helmet. Maybe once your Mk.2 power armor is built.

Your senses are dulled somewhat due to the helmet blocking your hearing. All the outside sounds are picked up by microphones and played over your helmet speakers instead, so there's a tiny bit of a time lag there, and some details are lost.
But still, you listen for her. You can hear her footsteps, and the particular sound her hands and feet make against the smooth tiles has a sort of rhythm to it. Once that rhythm changes, you know she's making her move.

She'll probably go for your neck again. You wait until the last second to reach out and blindly grab at something.

That something turns out to be her arm, which shatters under your grip, just below the wrist.
But you've got her now, and although she flails violently, she can't escape without tearing her own arm off, which she might actually manage if you don't do something.

Pulling her around in front of you, you lock your legs around her lower half and then close your left arm around her throat, blocking off her airway.

These mutants might be strong and practically insensate, but they are still alive. That should mean they need oxygen, and so if you choke her out...
It takes a long time, though. She struggles hard, but your power armor might as well be a solid block of metal. Her struggles turn to panic, and you can hear her gasping and breaking more of her own bones as she tries to escape.

Finally though, she does weaken, and eventually passes out.
That was a little rougher than you were hoping for.

>>5749563
>That was a little rougher than you were hoping for.
Not as rough a what's in store for it/her :^)

I think it's more likely that the mu-cat is going to be nearly irreparably fucked up from the nanites. It's turning people into acid fart juice tumors. I doubt whatever it has done to make these other people big and strong is truly beneficial.
>>
>>5749563

After she's out, you carefully drag her by the scruff of her neck to one of the storage areas you're supposed to be raiding.

You don't know what kind of effect the mutation might have on sedatives and other medicines, but there's only one way to keep this thing calm enough to get it back to the ship.
It's hard to say how much you'd need to give her, but you've memorized the correct dosages of several key medicines for your whole crew, including Cylia. This woman is much larger, so based on her approximate body weight...

It takes four entire vials of sedatives to get what you believe to be the correct dosage.
This stuff is diluted out to a proper dosage for the majority of species, which is to say, not caithans or humans. This much would probably kill a vegetarian in just a few minutes, but it's just enough to make her relax.

You also have to crank up the pressure on the hypo-stim pretty high to penetrate her skin, which also involved shaving a bare spot on each of her arms and legs.
You then followed that up with a styptic, since her broken bones are probably causing some serious internal damage. Particularly after she started flailing around.

Even if it's not quite enough, she'll be too high to get far. You still remember what some of this stuff did to Cylia after the first time you went to town on her.

With that taken care of for the moment, you take a quick look around and note that the hospital's supplies seem somewhat depleted, but everything that's supposed to be here still is.
They were likely dealing with a high volume of patients in the lead up to this mess, and then after things broke down and patients started becoming rabid, nobody had a chance to come back and loot.

After grabbing most of what you need (medicine-wise) and stuffing it into a plastic box, you haul it up to the roof to keep it out of harm's way while you clear out the rest of the building.

You decide that, for the sake of keeping collateral low, you're going to keep your minigun in reserve and keep at it with the shield and club, even if it does take a bit longer.
And it does, quite a bit longer in fact.

You spend a good fifteen minutes clearing rooms on the current floor before moving on to the next lowest, which takes you another thirty.
Mostly due to the number of individual patient rooms on that floor.

There weren't actually a lot of mutants on that floor though. Mostly what you found were corpses.
Either mutilated horrifically by the mutants, or left to die in their beds without medical treatment. And the weirdest part for you, is that because stations are mostly sterile... they haven't rotted.

Well, they've turned all sorts of funny colors as blood settled and whatnot. You can definitely tell that they're dead, but they've been here for quite some time without bloating or being eaten by insects.
You haven't encountered a lot of abandoned or destroyed ships so far, but you can imagine that any crew onboard would end up desiccated like a mummy at some point.

Actually, you guess that's what those husks were.

In any case, you take it slow, going floor by floor and occasionally taking breaks to allow your suit's antimatter cell to cool down.
According to your fuel gauge, you've still got about two hours of run time left after working at it for two hours. But that's including breaks, and using the shield sparingly.

You still have the bottom two floors left to clear, but you're almost done.

"Captain, i think we're all done outside." Gildur informs you. "I'm landing on the roof to conserve fuel."

"Gotcha."

Yeah, fuel. That's the one big problem, you reckon.
You can get metal and water from the asteroids around this star system, but the station has no facilities for the creation of antimatter.

As far as you know, no station does. It's all shipped in from the core worlds.

Of course, there's some antimatter stored on the station, but it's not going to be a lot. And once it's gone, you won't be able to power the station or any ships that stop here.
It's possible to smuggle some amount of it from the nearby stations, especially Thekia, but it won't be enough. If you take too much it'll draw suspicion, and they might stop supplying those stations, too.

Sooner rather than later, you're going to need to install some nuclear facilities on this station. Maybe some solar arrays, if it's viable.
You don't actually know how close this asteroid is to the parent star. It looks kinda dim to you, but you don't actually know.

That means you're gonna need more mining crews and ships, and a processing facility too. Man, what a pain in the ass.

While you're lost in thought on logistics, you suddenly hear a loud BANG.
Pausing to look and listen around, you don't hear or see anything... until it happens again. BANG.

It's coming from a room down the hall. BANG.
You see a heavy-looking door being bent outwards.
>>
>>5751305
>Maybe some solar arrays, if it's viable.

You prepare yourself for whatever ends up coming out of there... but you weren't fucking ready.

Whatever's behind that heavy door slams against it one last time, ripping the door and it's steel frame clean out of the wall in a spray of concrete, sending it flying across the hall where it lands on the floor with a thud.
And then out walks perhaps the ugliest son of a bitch you've ever seen in your life. Like a cross between a naked mole rat and a lamprey eel.

Okay, now you know for a FACT that there's no goddamned species out here who look even remotely like this.
What were they keeping in there?!

You don't have time to worry about it. Whatever it is, it huffs at the air through it's drooling, fanged maw and turns towards you.
The beady black eyes dotted around it's head betray no semblance of intelligence, and you feel only hunger from this thing.

Immediately, it charges at you with surprising speed. You make an attempt to block it with your shield, but the force is simply too much, even with it hooked into your suit's power.
Not only that, but the sudden drain causes your suit's strength to give out, and you're knocked back by the charge. The monster quickly pounces on you, and you struggle to hold back it's maw by grabbing it round the hard, bony rim.

Forcing your feet underneath it, you kick the creature off of you and quickly hop to your feet, grabbing the club you'd dropped in the struggle and wielding it with both hands.
The creature is immediately back on it's feet as soon as it lands and charges at you again. You swing your club in an upward arc, striking it in the... in the head, you guess.

For a moment you consider shoving your fist down it's throat and igniting your shield to see what happens, but frankly you don't know how effective it would be, and you don't want to damage your equipment either.

Thankfully, you came properly equipped for a situation like this.
Igniting your shield once again, you carefully deflect the mutant's charge before grabbing the minigun off your back and swinging it around.

Chambered in .338 lapua magnum, each round packs a significant punch while allowing you to carry more ammunition than a significantly larger round would.
It's still pretty huge though, so you can't fire it all day while limited to just what you can carry in an ammo pack. For that reason, the rate of fire on this thing isn't terribly high.

Naturally, these rounds are all copper coated tungsten with a diamond tip, for big game hunting. Overpenetration is a given, and some damage to the walls and floor at minimum can't be helped.

Not that it really matters, but the mutant is really perfectly positioned when you pull the trigger. It's whole side is exposed as it tries to turn around and charge at you again.
There's a spray of pink mist as holes open up all over it's body, and dust flies into the air as the bullets pass straight through it's body like air, then continue on to shatter floor tiles and ricochet everywhere.

You only held the trigger for two solid seconds, but the thing is already a mess. It shudders as bright red blood pours from it's wounds, but amazingly it doesn't just fall over, and manages to actually take a step towards you.
You just gingerly tap the trigger, and two more rounds fly straight through it's... 'head'. Or at least close to where you think it should be. One of them seems to do nothing, but the second, which struck closer to the mouth, really seems to hurt it.

It falls to the floor, not dead but certainly dying. You don't want to cause any more damage to the hospital though, so you finish it with a few dozen solid stomps to the 'head'.

That thing was ridiculously tough, for some reason. You're honestly curious what it was, and the best way to find out is probably to check the room it came from.
Walking over there, you see a sign next to the destroyed door which reads "Natural and Traditional Medicine".

Inside is... different from the rest of the hospital. There are live plants in pots of soil, boxes and bottles of dried herbs, tinctures and odd, gross-looking mixtures.

More importantly though, you find a dead doctor lying on the floor in pieces. You can only tell he was a doctor from the scraps of his clothing, partially because of the damage to his corpse... but more interestingly, also because he's mutated.
And lying next to him is a shattered glass box full of leech-like creatures, which vaguely resemble the thing you just fought. Many of them are dead, but a few have latched onto the doctor's corpse, and are in the process of mutating themselves.

One has even started to sprout legs.

You really just wanted to set the sumbitches on fire, but there's no damned alcohol in this hospital. They use nanomachines and special 'bio-safe' chemical cleaners to sterilize everything.

So instead, you settle for burning it all by crushing them with your shield, including the leech-infested corpse.
As the hot plasma burns into flesh, it fills the room with some undoubtedly nasty smoke that you fortunately don't have to breathe.

There's few things worse than the smell of burning meat, in your opinion. One of those being rotting meat.

You stomp down on the charred remains for good measure, ensuring absolutely none of those leeches survive.
Not a single thing in this room is on Lyna's list, so you don't have to stick around and try to collect any of it. Seems like she prefers real medicine.

Actually, wait a minute... Didn't Lyna tell you to be on the lookout for her assistant or something?
Yeah, she said he had red skin and long arms.

...Kind of hard to say what he looked like considering the state he was in, but... yeah, that definitely could have been him.

You wonder though, why he had mutated. And why he was dead in there.
Doctors wouldn't be taking illicit drugs like that, right?

Oh well. You've got more work to do.

Moving right along, you continue clearing out the floor room by room, until finally you manage to reach Dr.Lyna's office.
It looks... normal, you guess. More normal than you expected, actually.

If anything was odd, you'd have to say it's all the faux wood. Most people don't tend to decorate with wood out here, you've noticed.
There's even a real potted plant on her desk that seems to have wilted due to a lack of watering. It kind of makes you wonder if she was born planetside.

Her desk has a few items on it. There's a proper terminal built into it. Several holopads are scattered about. A cheap phaser pistol, and a small box containing a few data crystals, of which three are missing.
The drawers and cabinets in the room are all open, and items have been slung about. It looks like she left in quite a hurry, and took only the essentials with her.

And in the corner of the room is a wooden trunk, which Lyna wants you to bring back no matter what.
It's supposed to be full of medicine, but who knows what's really in there.

>Yoink the holopads and data crystals, see if you can find any interesting information.

>Write-In?
SHODAN should be less busy by now, perhaps we can provide her with a remote plugin to the terminal, plug in those data crystals, then just have her copy everything or otherwise non-obtrusively look into all of this? Not that I think the doctor is some sort of traitor or evil doctor, but she seems the type to take initiative in doing practical research.

>Doctors wouldn't be taking illicit drugs like that, right?
I see David doesn't know a lot of doctors, lmao.

You're curious. Real curious.
You basically don't know anything about Lyna, except that she gives you weird vibes.

Maybe it's because she's a lizard person, or maybe it's because you don't trust doctors, but either way you want some info on her.
And here's an opportunity to get some.

Being careful not to move anything, you take the data crystals one by one and plug them into your suit, allowing SHODAN to transfer the files over to the ship.
Then you carefully place them right back where they belong. The process repeats with the holopads, and you manage to get a copy of their contents as well.

Then you move on to the computer terminal.
It's... unlocked. Looks like Lyna wiped her computer before she left, because you're greeted with a fresh OS install, asking you to input new admin credentials.

Oh well.

Moving along, you grab the wooden trunk and start to make your way back outside, but something stops you.
Turning back for a moment, you glance at the half-withered plant on Lyna's desk.

...How many times have you seen plants out here in space?
There was the dodo planet, which is dead now. Or maybe it was always dead, you don't fucking know. Then you saw some grass up in the merchant's quarters.

That's about it.

...

The plant sits comfortably atop the wooden chest as you carry it, freshly watered from one of the drinking fountains in the hall.
Maybe it's stupid. It's not like this thing is actually contributing to oxygen or food production or anything, but you don't want to let it just die here.

You carefully carry everything upstairs to the roof, setting the chest and the potted plant down beside the pile of other shit you've collected while clearing the hospital.

Lots of medicine in the pile. Bags of blood, vials of nanomachines, various medical instruments, piles of disposable scalpels and half a dozen hypostim guns. Three blood oxygenating machines...
Well, it's a lot. Some of it you don't actually recognize, but you're sure it all has some use or another.

You've got just about everything you need now, you think. It's just a matter of clearing out the last two floors.
As you head down there... well, you find that they're already pretty much clear.

Starting from the fourth floor you noticed a lot of broken windows. You guess some of the mutants were simply jumping out to chase after the Metal Gear.
Well, every single window on the second floor is busted out, and the only mutants left down here seem to be injured or deformed in some way.

In particular, they don't seem to notice you approaching them. Deaf and blind, most likely.

They're no less riled up than the others were, however, and you quickly get to work disposing of them.
Your disposable club is just about at it's limit, you think. The soft aluminum has been bent back and forth so many times that it's about to crack and break in half.

But it did it's job, and that's all that matters.

Once you're down on the ground floor, you look outside, and... wow.

>>
>>5754279

It's not often you see a mess like this.
There must be well over a hundred mutant corpses strewn about out here, and the vast majority of them have been burned horribly.

Some of them are missing limbs or chunks of their body, while others have been rendered down to little more than charcoal in a laser-induced crater.

The first floor is basically clear already, so you call it good for now.

"I think we're done here, Gildur. Come pick me up in the parking lot, and we'll load up on the roof."

[Aye, Captain!]

The Metal Gear touches down nearby to pick you up, then ferries you directly up to the roof where you, Gildur and Kyla all get to work loading up medicine and equipment.

"Captain, is there anything else we should take while we're here?" Gildur asks.

"No. The station's going to need this place intact for the recovery effort. That's why i bothered clearing it out, and we're only taking what's on the list."

"Okay. I think that's the last of it then, Captain. Except for this..."

Gildur looks over the trunk from Lyna's office. You'd set it aside from everything else.

"A plant?" Kyla questions.

"Figured the ship could use some decoration."

...

About halfway through your trip back to the survivor's camp, you get word from Vex that he's disabled Elynderr's escape craft.
Not long after that, you get word from your AIs that the federation ships suddenly turned around and warped out of the system.

They seem to be headed somewhere other than Thekia, so you're not too worried about that.
But it's unfortunate, they'll definitely report what's happened back to the federation. Not that they wouldn't have found out before long anyways, but still.

Even if you turn the ship around now and chased them, there's no way you'd get close enough to interdict. Best just to not worry about it.

"If they come back here, we can't pull any punches." You murmur.

"I have blueprints for a gun-type device ready to go, but a fusion stage will take some more research. Your memories are lacking in detail." SHODAN says.

"Oh, you're back?."

"Yes. My body has run out of energy, likely due to a short somewhere. However, Captain Kordunn's team has relieved me for now."

"Sorry you ended up getting hurt."

"There is no need to worry, Captain. I am quite fine. It is my body that has been damaged."

"I know, but still. What happened, anyways? You were pretty torn up."

"There were three cyborgs hidden in that room before we had even entered. I believe they were responding to to presence of an intruder, and they did so viciously."

"They were fast as hell, that's for sure." You sigh.

"Most organics wouldn't last a single exchange with them, Captain. However, both Cylia and yourself managed to defeat one. Quite extraordinary."

"Cylia beat one? I kind of just assumed you took them both out."

"Unfortunately, my hands were quite full with two of them."

"However," SHODAN continues. "Miss Cylia was able to narrowly dodge the first attack, and only suffered minor injury from the second before managing to use her rifle."

You walk over to your bedroom, where Cylia is currently resting. She's sleeping peacefully under the covers of your bed.

"So, how'd she lose her hand?" You ask, watching over her while she sleeps.

"The opponent was simply more durable than expected. Whether it feigned death or was simply stunned due to being shot, i am uncertain. However, the moment Miss Cylia turned her back, it lashed out at her again.
She was able to react and attempted to block the slash with her rifle, but it cut through both it and her hand without much effort. She responded by drawing the revolver you'd given her to finish the job."

The old Smith & Wesson, huh? You gave that to her a long time ago.
You're surprised she's still carrying it around, since she hates how loud it is.

"Good girl. I guess you're the one who tore the other limb from limb, then?"

"Yes. I was finding it difficult to use my rifle in close combat, and Cylia was left unable to reload her weapon in the moment. However, after defeating one of them, my body was quite damaged, particularly the muscles in my arms and legs."

"How'd you end up hiding from the last one?"

"It was simply a stroke of luck." She admits. "There was a power surge that disabled the lights for a minute or so, which i now understand seems to have occurred at the moment of Chell's EMP. We took that opportunity to hide and regroup."

"But then it stopped attacking you, huh?"

"Correct. It made no attempt to search for us. Perhaps once it has found something, it is assumed that it will be killed instantly."

"Assumptions make an ass out of you and me. Well, good job holding out, both of you."

"Thank you, Captain. May i make a request?"

"Sure? You don't usually ask for much, though. You've got me curious."

"I would like to collect the bodies of those cyborgs and study their cybernetics. I believe some adjustments could be made to my body structure, to improve my speed and flexibility."

"What, is that all? I already plan on doing the same thing with numbnuts in there, once Nena is finished digging through his brain. Go nuts."

"I see. Very well, i will send word to Captain Kordunn's team to recover the bodies."

...

You watch over Cylia for the duration of the flight back, ensuring she's not uncomfortable in any way.
By the time you finally arrive, she's actually starting to wake up.

When she does so, the first thing she sees is you standing over her, wearing your power armor.

"...David?" She asks, groggily.

"Hey there, sleepyhead. How do you feel?"

"A little sick..." She groans, attempting to sit up. You place your hand gently on her back and help her up, so she doesn't put too much strain on her newly reattached hand.

>>

>how about throwing a punch that literally breaks the sound barrier?
It WOULD be impressive, but considering how Katsumi was the first person to do it and exploded his arm doing so, it's automatically a low-tier technique. (Also it didn't even really do much to hurt Pickle in that fight, kinda just knocked him off his feet.)
Yujiro doing it casually to show off to his kid and suffering zero damage afterwards is some baller shit though.
>>
>>5756734

Cylia sits there in a daze for a few moments, just staring off into space until she seems to remember something.
Slowly, she brings her arm up, perhaps expecting to find a stump... but her hand is there, with only a faint line beneath the shiny polymer coating her skin to indicate anything had happened to it.

She gently squeezes her fingers closed, then tests them one by one.

"Don't squeeze too hard. It'll take a while for it to heal."

"...It's a little numb." She mumbles.

"That'll pass."

Cylia turns to you and makes a fist with her left hand, gently tapping it against your armor with a smile.

"Thank you. I'd give you a hug, but... you're wearing that stupid armor. Things must be bad, huh?"

"That depends on your perspective, i suppose. But no, things are all fine right now. I don't think we lost anyone, and the station is ours."

"So why...?" She asks, looking surprised.

"Eh, well. Remember that first little spat i had with Dark Star? You know the one."

"Oh... yeah. You did do that."

Her smile fades as she remembers something unpleasant.

"Well, the doctor that reattached your hand is at their camp. We're headed back there now, to deliver medical supplies."

"Okay? Were they hostile, or...?"

"Well, no. But i didn't know that when i met with them, so."

"Are you going to keep wearing that, then?"

"For now, yes. Things are still volatile, and i don't need any more problems."

You still have an hour and a half worth of fuel left, although it doesn't actually consume much when you aren't moving.
Fuel wouldn't be such a problem if this thing wasn't so damned heavy, but being heavy is also where much of it's strength comes from.

Nothing's ever free.

"Alright..." Cylia sighs. "...So, how is everyone? Did i miss anything?"

"Everyone's fine. SHODAN's body is damaged but that's not a problem. Sanig and Gildur are uninjured."

"Hmm? Oh, yeah... no, you should still get looked at. I know you're tough, but you can still get hurt. It's not good to ignore your wounds."

Yeah, she's right.
You've been ignoring it, but your side is burning pretty bad. Probably from the sweat getting into your wound.

Even if it's not Lyna, you need someone to clean it up and stitch it properly.

>Alright, i'll go see the doc. I need to stick around for a while longer, so i guess i'll have to take care of myself.

Now, I know this is paranoia, but the reptilian has been working on people down on the station. The station filled with mutants. The mutants created by blood-borne nanomachines. If even a SINGLE nanomachine stays on her equipment, which it very well could if it resists normal sterilization procedures, then anyone she fixes up with that equipment could potentially be infected and get fucked further down the line.
It's unlikely, but still a possibility. So I'd rather let Kyla do her work. After we run a high-powered magnet over the suit to fry any nanomachines from our ripping and tearing, that is.

stop being a coward, david. plus we ***absolutely need*** a medic with no moral qualms; we still have some wraiths to dissect after all

>>5758454
im pretty sure it doesn't work that way. the mutants only started after they consumed a ridiculous amount of redsang, plus if only a single nanobot was needed to infect a person, there was nothing stopping the feds from delivering it in powder form through the life support system
>>
>>5758614
I think it's that nanomachines are designed explicitly without the capability of self-manufacturing to avoid gray goo situations. But getting rid of the fucking things is a pain in the ass once they are in your system.
>>
>>5758619
we fought mutants without a respirator or a helmet.if anything, the nanites are already in our system; so i don't think anything lizard lady does to us will fuck us up any more
>>
>>5758622
It's not necessarily about what she'll do to us now, but what she might learn about us and who might get that info out of her.
At this stage of the game, it's imperative that we remain as much of a mystery as possible. Let the Feds make their assumptions. The more work they have to do to figure out what we are and how we tick, the better.
>>
>>5758631
its way too late for that dude. our records have been on the system and our face has been in the open in thekia and in here for months. and lets be honest; the only thing the feds need to do in order to kill us is to send like 5 of the knife murderbots/cyborgs at the same time; we are quite lethal, but in the whole danger totem scheme, we are quite low; a check up won't do any more harm than the done david has unintentionally done since the moment he arrived several months ago.

ALSO, we really, really, REALLY need a medic. not only to heal our wounds and keep the crew safe and healthy from whatever bullshit david comes up with, but to check on the infected caithan, and like i said before, the wraiths dissection'. sanig already told us he really can't do shit with that and Lyna's only true sin was that she was just as direct as david is. i literally don't see any other alternative than her

I'll choose to trust her. Even if she has connection, she still chose to stick around, braving significant risks actually help these dregs of society.
Also, with the situation the way it is now, she's not going anywhere anytime soon. If there is something hidden in those data crystals SHODAN will find it. If there are terrible secrets in her head we have several means to tenderly extract it (we have many psychic beings in our company).

"Alright, alright. I'll get it looked at... just not right now. Once things have calmed down, i'll go see Gron's medic."

"The insectoid?" Cylia asks.

"Yes, her. She's a moth, i think."

"...Alright." She sighs. "As long as you're taking care of yourself."

She runs her hand along your side, feeling only the cold armor between you.

"It's not too bad, is it?"

"It hurts a little, that's all."

"So it's pretty bad, then." She surmises.

You'll admit, that's your own fault, really.
You have a habit of pushing down pain. Even burns or gunshots aren't that bad in your eyes, because you've had worse.

So when you actually admit that you're hurting, people assume it's awful.

"It's fine, honestly. You don't want me hiding my wounds, so i'm just telling you the truth."

A small smile returns to her face.
She pats you on the side through your armor.

"...Thanks."

...

Upon returning to the same landing spot as before, you're greeted not by a group, but by a single man this time. The runner from before.
He greets you as you step out of your ship and onto the roof.

"Welcome back, Captain. How did the patient transfer go?"

"Fine. Everyone went without much of a fuss, and we've got them to a safe distance from the station."

"That's great news. So, did you need something else, or...?"

"No, i'm here to deliver the supplies."

"The suppl... wait, already?!" He exclaims, looking shocked. "That place was swarming with mutants! How the hell did you..."

He looks you over again before shaking his own head. Yeah, stupid question.

"Well, nevermind that. How much did you manage to salvage? If we could get a box or two, that would be great."

"About five shipping crates, plus Lyna's special order." You reply.

The man's eyes go wide. He asks you to wait there while he grabs a few men to ferry the supplies.
They return rather quickly, with the runner once again being out of breath from running up and down the stairs.

You direct them to the cargo hold, and they carefully make off with the supplies.

All the clamor manages to drag Cylia out of bed. She nearly stumbles at the door, but catches herself on the doorframe.

"Cyl, what are you doing up? You've still got sedatives in your system, it'd be bad if you fell on your hand."

"Well, you said the doctor who reattached it is here, right...? I should meet with her, give my thanks..."

Huh. You've got an odd feeling here. You feel like Cylia wouldn't force herself out of bed so soon if it was just that.
You can't quite put your finger on it, but one of your many sixth senses is tingling.

>No way. You're still all loopy, and you know what happened last time you went out like that. Get some rest for now.

Or there is no excuse and she DOES want to go and meet Scales... she wants to ask her a question. What's the question? "...Alright. I guess it wouldn't hurt to see her off. I need to talk to her later anyways."

Cylia seems satisfied and tries to walk out, but you stop her.

"You plan on walking outside like that?" You ask.

She looks down and notices that she's wearing her birthday suit.
After bringing her back to the ship, you had Kyla strip her down and check her for any further wounds.

Cylia immediately seizes up and goes red in the face. She covers herself and looks back and forth down the hall, but the porters are already gone, so there's nothing to worry about.

"Hey! Why didn't you say anything before now?!" She whisper-shouts.

"What, and ruin the view?"

She punches you in the chest with her good hand, but only manages to bruise her knuckle. You can't help but grin.

"Where are my clothes?" She demands.

"You've got a set in my nightstand. Hold on, i'll grab you a skinsuit."

...

After getting herself ready, you escort Cylia outside, onto the rooftop.
The runner, who's still sticking around for some reason, stares at her in surprise.

"No way... she's up and walking around already?" He mumbles.

Cylia makes a point of flashing the "OK" symbol at him with her recently re-attached hand. The man just shakes his head in disbelief.

"She's still woozy from the anesthetic. Do you mind escorting her down the stairs?" You ask him.

Unfortunately, you still can't fit through the roof's stairwell in this shithole building.
The man looks at you, and then back to the stairs with grief on his face. He's clearly tired from running up and down.

"...Why don't you just jump?" Cylia asks.

"What, with you? I don't know if that's..."

"It's fine. What are we, five stories up?"

Cylia looks over the edge, judging the height.

"That's nothing. I could hop down there even without that silly armor on." She asserts.

That may actually be true. Given how light, muscular and nimble she is, along with how light the station's gravity is... but still.

"Well don't, please."

"Are you going to carry me, then?"

"...You just lose all sense of danger when you're high, don't you?"

"Oh please, you're one to talk. Come on, let's take the short way down."

...Well, the suit will handle the impact. It's fine, you guess.

"Alright." You relent.

Scooping her up in a princess carry, you support her body as much as possible and casually step up and over the edge.
Once again, you land with a loud thud that sends little shards of rock and a pall of dust flying, but neither you nor Cylia is bothered much by it.

Somebody should really install an elevator.

As you set her down, a pair of guards come running around the corner.
They stop when they see you.

"Geeze, this guy again." One man complains.

"Come on, Cid. He just delivered us a bunch of meds." The other replies.

"Yeah, yeah... can't be too mad, i guess."

One of the men, "Cid" apparently, walks over to you.

"What's going on?" He asks.
>>
the suspense is killing me

"Just need to talk with the doc before we head off." You answer.

"Alright, but can you use the stairs next time? That noise is freaking everyone out. We're all on edge, here."

"Nope."

"...Sorry?"

"Stairwell's too small."

"Oh. Well..."

Cid doesn't seem to be too sure what to say about that.
He's drawing a blank.

"Alright, let's go, Cyl. She's over this way."

"After you." She replies.

As you're walking away, you hear the second man asking Cid how you got back on your ship if you couldn't fit up the stairs.
You can't quite hear his reply, but he sounds irritated.

...

When you get to the makeshift hospital, Lyna has already cracked open the supplies you gathered and is handing them out.

"You'll need to take two shots of reliquick, one in the morning, and again in the evening." Lyna says, informing her patient.

"I heard that stuff's bad for your kidneys..." The patient complains.

"Maybe. But your kidneys can't function at all if you're dead, now can they?"

The patient's response is just a braindead stare.
Lyna sighs out of frustration.

"No, they cannot. Now take your damned spray."

She shoves an inhaler into the patient's hands and walks past you, basically ignoring your (and Cylia's) presence.

"So... which one's the doctor?" Cylia asks, looking around the room. The nurses from before are also handing out medicine at the moment.

"The lizard."

Without a word, Cylia walks over to her and starts staring her up and down rather intently.
Lyna doesn't seem to care one bit though, and doesn't react to her at all until she's done with her next patient.

"Is there something you need, miss? I believe your hand has already been reattached."

Lyna crosses her arms and waits for a response.

"No." Cylia replies, an unusual smug smile crossing her face. "I just wanted to thank you for your assistance, doctor."

"You're welcome. Now, either assist us or get out of my clinic. I'm quite busy." Lyna demands, walking away from her.

Cylia frowns, but doesn't seem upset. She returns to your side and whispers to you.

"She's kind of an asshole, huh?"

"She's busy, Cyl. You weren't awake for it, but things were rougher than this before i came here. See that pile of bags in the corner?"

"What pile of... oh. Oh no."

"Yeah, they weren't doing so hot."

You find a seat and give it to Cylia. Together, you wait for about an hour until Lyna's finished handing out and administering medicine.
You feel kind of bad for immediately going to speak with her after, because she sits down with a big, tired huff and cradles her head in her hands.

"Busy day?"

"...Yeah, you could say that."

Lyna glances over at the pile of bodybags, but quickly turns away from them again.

"Did you get everything you needed?"

"Yes, thanks to you. I'll be able to avoid any more deaths, at least with the patients we have here. I'm also quite thankful to have the more heavily injured individuals off the station."

"In that case, do you think you could take a look at a few of my crewmembers, as you'd promised?"

"I never promised you anything." She clarifies. "I simply said that i could do it."

"If you think you can argue semantics with me, you've got another thing coming."

"I never said i wouldn't do it either, you know." She smirks.

This woman... she's just screwing with you.

"I do intend to assist you. But first, can you tell me what you found at the hospital?" She asks.

What you found... does she mean the data crystals? Or her computer?
No. She's probably talking about her assistant.

"There was a dead mutant locked up in the natural medicines storeroom. His body was deformed, but it looked roughly similar to the description of your assistant."

"Dead, hmm? Unfortunate. But you say he was mutated?"

"Severely, i think. Not sure what killed him."

"Most likely the mutation itself. He wouldn't have had the vitality to withstand it." She sighs. "Reorganizing the body's entire genetic code piece by piece often results in cancer, malformities and countless other defects, on top of extreme exhaustion."

"Sounds like you know a lot about what's going on."

"Only what i could discover through patient observation. It appears to be a retrovirus, but outside of Grey technology i've never seen one that could affect all races near equally. That's not something you can normally do."

She's sharp. Not only has she discovered the cause on her own, she's also determined that it's not a normal retrovirus.
She's also managed to observe and document the process of transformation in the middle of this whole mess.

Maybe she's been trying to find a cure?

You decide to go ahead and share what little you know with her. It's not like any more damage can possibly be done at this point.

"It's nanomachines." You tell her.

"What?"

"We've looked into it as well. They're in the redsang."

Lyna's eyes widen for a moment, and she stares directly up at you.

"What else have you found?" She asks, sounding serious.

"They're smaller than normal nanomachines. Probably made out of some kind of meta-material, or more likely..."

Well, you're not sure how common this knowledge is, but she's probably not aware of it regardless.

"How much do you know about warp metal?"

She raises a brow at this question.

"Nothing. How does it relate?"

"Well, there's not just one kind of warp metal. From what i can tell, it's a whole periodic table of it's own. So in theory, it would be possible to build things out of those different elements."

"Like specialized nanomachines..." She surmises.

"I'm not entirely sure on the details myself, but it seems like warp metal is uh... ah, jeeze. How to explain this?"

You think over all the bits and pieces of information you've discovered, from the way it reacts when struck, it's odd weight and physical properties, the implication of it's usage in warp travel and gravity generation, and what few things you know for sure...
It's all very complicated and uncertain, but what cements it for you is the way warp metal interacts with wraiths, and how it's used to create black boxes capable of containing a soul.

After considering it for a moment, you continue.

"I guess you could say that warp metal is like a shadow."

All you get in response to that is a blank stare, from, both Lyna and Cylia.

"...A three dimensional shadow of a higher dimensional object. Most of the warp metal's mass exists in a different dimension, and... i'm just guessing here, but... what if you gave that mass some structure which can't be seen just from it's shadow?"

Lyna and Cylia look between eachother, confusion written on their faces.

"Do you have any idea what he's talking about?" Lyna asks.

"No clue. He talks about this stuff with some of our other crewmembers, but it all flies over my head. I don't understand it at all." Cylia replies.

"Look... it's not possible to create a machine smaller than an atom, right?"

"Yes, i suppose it's not." Lyna replies.

"Well, they're not. The machine is somewhere else, and what we see is only a small part of it. The bit that interacts with three dimensional space. That's what these nanomachines are, i think."

Lyna scratches the back of her head and sighs wearily.

"I don't know what you expect me to do with that information." She grumbles.

"I don't either, really. But i'm hoping that something i know might be of help."

"All i know now is that whatever i'm dealing with is far above my paygrade. I may still be able to do something about it, though."

But seriously, little bits of this stuff are in their bodies which equates to shadow machines on another plane of existence. So... blood transfusions? That will get rid of some of it, might stop the process or slow it down. The only other cure I could think of is remove their mind and soul from their body... and put it in a new container.

Shit, like the black boxes.

I'm over here thinking about what would her reaction be if she saw who was piloting the armour.
>>
>>5762940

"Well, now that you've brought this back to me..."

Lyna stands up, and you notice now that she'd been sitting on top of the chest you brought back from her office.
She turns around and unlatches it, revealing a very advanced-looking machine in one half, and a set of padded trays in the second half.

"What's this?"

"A nanomachine programming tool, and the bare nanomachines required to use it."

This time, you're the one in a bit of shock.

"...That's extremely illegal, you know."

"I know. But it doesn't matter much anymore, since the federation intends to kill us anyways. I may as well conduct my research in the open, now. It'll be so much easier that way."

"What sort of research?"

"Genetic studies."

"I've never heard anything more vague in my life."

"Genetic optimization, specifically." She sighs. "Based on the technology used for environmental adaptation. The sort of thing you'd get before leaving your homeworld."

Ah, that's right. Most species aren't born with the same environmental requirements. They receive retroviral therapy to alter their genetic code, pushing their comfortable averages towards what you'd find on a station or spaceship.
Their offspring would have the same adaptations without requiring further therapy, but those born planetside from pure bloodlines would need to get it done before they could head out into space.

You're kind of surprised you haven't needed it yourself. The air here is very thin and very dry by your standards, but after a while you just sort of got used to it.
You guess humans are just built different.

...Or those greys shot you up with something while you were unconscious. Hard to say.

"So you're planning to fight retrovirus with retrovirus?"

"In a sense. I may be able to use these nanomachines to remove the existing ones, and then a second dose could repair their genetic code... although, i'll have to use a standard template. It's not feasible to completely preserve their individuality."

"In that case, aren't you worried about disease... or inbreeding?"

"Hardly an issue. Most defective genes are accounted for in such templates, and if there are any issues they can be corrected for at a later date."

Well, how convenient.

"Is this going to be enough, though?"

There are quite a few vials of nanomachines in this chest, but there's a lot of mutants on the station, too.
The sheer mass of some of them might be a problem.

"That... remains to be seen. I'll try to salvage what i can. If i program them to clump up, i should be able to filter them out after the treatment is complete. Still, it may not be enough."

You know, it occurs to you that you have an unregistered nanofab, and this woman has unregistered nanomachines.
You aren't sure if your old, imprecise fab could actually manufacture them properly, but if it could?

You'd have unfettered access to medical nanomachines.
Not that you have the expertise to use them, but...

"Say, doc..."

"David, i know that tone. What are you doing?" Cylia cuts in.

"Let's imagine for a moment i could get you more of those nanomachines."

"Impossible. All fabricators are heavily locked down. Just having a bare sample isn't enough."

"What if i could make it happen, though?"

"...Then you'd also be well above my paygrade. Where are you going with this?" Lyna demands, crossing her arms.

"I'm asking what it's worth to you."

Lyna narrows her eyes and stares you down.

"You're serious, aren't you?"

Leaning in, she whispers into the side of your helmet.

"Do you actually have one? An unlocked fabricator?"

"Do you want them or not?"

Lyna covers her mouth and scratches at her scales. She's looking your way, but it's like she's staring right through you.
She's considering things carefully, it seems.

Two whole minutes pass without her saying a word, but you wait. It won't help to rush her along.
Finally, her gaze turns to the patients laying about in their beds, all in various states of unwellness.

"Fine. I want them." She decides.

"Then you'll have to work for me, at least for a while. In exchange, i'll get you as many nanomachines as you need."

"What sort of work are we talking about?"

"All medical related, obviously. You're clearly a skilled surgeon, and you know how to use them as well, otherwise you wouldn't have a need for them." You tell her, gesturing towards the chest.

"That still doesn't tell me much. What do you actually plan on having me do? Act as a combat medic? I refuse to run around some battlefield getting shot at, and i won't be satisfied sitting on my ass doing nothing, either."

That's a good question, honestly.
With the way things have been going, you've been thinking about prosthetic limbs, cybernetic enhancements, genetic modification and so-on for a while.

If someone loses a limb, it'd be hard to get it replaced quickly. And you may not enjoy the idea of becoming a cyborg, but that's not true of your crew. Sanig is already full of artificial organs.
Then there's the matter of genetic modification. You've heard that most species have long since undergone species-wide modification to eliminate illness, reduce the risk of cancer and extend the natural lifespan.

But humans haven't done any of that. Genetic studies on earth are still in their infancy, and there's little difference between man and monkey when it comes to your genetic code.
You'll be lucky if you make it to eighty years old, but even Cylia will live twice that long. Kyla's already older than you are, but she'll live to be several hundred years old. And hell, Sanig? He could be a thousand for all you know.

Evolution is messy and unguided. It throws shit at the wall to see what sticks, but that leaves a lot of room for improvement. For optimization. So much natural potential that's just left on the table.

How is she going to optimize the human genome if she only has one sample of the material? She has nothing to compare it to, see what is supposed to be there and what isn't. David could have an allergy to jellyfish and she would have no way of knowing that is not normal.

Offer her a spot on our crew as a medical officer (staying within the ship and patching other crew up), with an option to lead the human genetic engineering effort once we get back to earth. Other options are tempting, but self-interest is strong. Maybe Cylia can get a human heart too out of this

A hybrid heart you mean. The idea of creating a tailored retrovirus to get other predator species up to Human physical standards is appealing, but in Cylia's case it really depends on if it's necessary and if she even wants to do it.
>>

If one of our crew gets infected with this and we don't have an antedote, we'll never forgive ourselves.
>>
>>5764795
Why would she even want a human heart? Her own does just fine. Do you not know how many people have heart problems and that it is one of the leading causes of death?
For the vast majority of aliens the "extreme" human performance simply would not necessary; they simply have no need for the performance, especially given the tradeoffs involved.
Let me put it to you this way; would you trade a third of your lifespan and double your caloric intake just so you can run three times faster and lift three times as much weight, knowing that most anyone who wants to can get the same deal (so you won't be that lone freak-of-nature Olympian)?
It's a terrible deal, and the only reasonable application is for illegal supersolder programs for which the well-being of the participants mean nothing (like those Edward Scissorhands we fought).
>>
>>5764598
>Just focus on dealing with these mutants. I want this station back in operation as soon as possible. (Leave her on the station)
This isn't as sexy an option as mucking around with our and our crew's genetic code for shits and giggles, but it's the one that could pay off biggest in the long run. This isn't the only station that a redsang plague has happened to in the past, just the first that we know that has sort of survived it. If we can find some way to mitigate the federations nanomachines, we can blunt one of their tools for keeping fringe colonies in line, and potentially swing some other settlements to our side in the process.
>>
>>5765099
Personally, I'd take that deal. To hell with living a long time weak. That's just me though.
>>
>>5764621
One complete sample is plenty. At the moment we're talking about optimizing David's genome specifically, after all.
Adjustments would have to be made to account for the whole spectrum of humanity in the future, but the majority of the work can be done with David's genome alone.

>>5764636
Genetic optimization is something that nearly every spacefaring race has gone through already. It's a very mature field of science.
Gene therapists have a good idea of what certain strands of DNA do, or are supposed to do. Many of the same strands can be found in different species, after all.

(For the sake of simplicity and convenience, we're going to say that 99% or more of species make use of DNA as opposed to whatever else)

>>5764795
It wouldn't be impossible, but depending on the methods used it would have it's own complications and potential rabbit holes. I'll say that much.

"You'll be working with Sanig and Kyla on cybernetics for the most part, at least at first. But i have a few special projects that could use your particular skills in the future."

"Such as?"

"Well, how much do you know about wraiths?"

"I'm not even certain they're real, for a start."

You struggle not to burst out laughing.

"Hah, oh. Oh man. They're fucking real."

"What, and you've seen one?"

Cylia stands silently behind you with a big, devilish grin on her face.

"One or two. And you'll be dissecting them for me at some point. As much as i hate to admit it, i don't know a whole hell of a lot about them either, and i'd like to change that."

Lyna stares at you incredulously, her arms crossed as she waits for a punchline or something.

"...What, you're serious?" She asks.

"Completely. And besides that, there's a particularly special undertaking waiting for you. One that you might actually enjoy, i think."

This time she simply waits for you to continue speaking.

"How would you like to be the one responsible for optimizing my species' DNA?"

"What?"

"You heard me."

"Yes, i heard you. But i don't understand. What do you mean?"

"I mean you'd be the first to do it. At all, ever."

Well, mostly.
You don't count that little incident with the greys.

Lyna looks you up and down, quickly coming to her conclusion.

"I see. That suit doesn't just serve as armor, it's also an environmental suit. The temperature, air pressure and oxygen level inside must be tailored to your biology." She surmises.

"You're not entirely wrong."

"Alright. Interesting, very interesting. At the least, my name would end up in your people's history books. How long has it been since you achieved warp-capability?"

"Yeah, we can talk about all that later. For now, give me a sample of the nanomachines and i'll... make sure they're taken care of."

While Lyna grabs a small vial and transfers a droplet of the silvery, mercury-like nanomachines into it for you, you remember a certain encounter you had back at the hospital.

"By the way, i had an interesting encounter back at the hospital."

"Interesting how?" Lyna asks.

"It was a Caithan. She seemed to have retained some semblance of intelligence through her mutation."

Cylia raises an eyebrow and looks up at you.

"Not you, hon. And she's dead, so don't worry about it."

Now it's Lyna who raises a brow.

"...Ignoring that for the moment, what do you mean? What sort of intelligence did the mutant display?"

"Tool use, critical thinking, self-preservation... all the sorts of things the rest of them don't."

"And you killed it?"

"Yes. Being a caithan, she was quite strong. It would have been more trouble that it was worth to try and bring her back alive. However, her corpse is mostly still intact."

"Tch."

Lyna actually looks slightly pissed off for the first time since you've seen her.

There's a sudden flash of pain inside your skull.
A point of shimmering light appears in your vision and slowly spreads out in waves towards the periphery.

You hear Lyna saying something, but it sounds so distant to you now.
You feel like you can't focus anymore. Your thoughts are muddled, and you suddenly lose track of what you were doing.

You want to say something, to tell the others of what you're experiencing... but you can't bring yourself to speak.
The surface of your skin is hot, like you've got a fever. You feel like you've going to vomit.

The last words you heard echo throughout your mind.

"And you killed it?"

Images flash through your mind of your fight with the mutated caithan. You see yourself bashing her with your shield, striking her with your club... and finally, finishing her off with your minigun.
Just before you pull the trigger, she raises her hand towards you, as if begging you to stop. But you pulled the trigger anyways. She was too dangerous, you couldn't...

Another flash of pain. Your vision goes white, like someone's shining a light in your eyes. It feels like you're floating.

...

......

...

"...Ignoring that for the moment, what do you mean? What sort of intelligence did the mutant display?"

"Tool use, critical thinking, self-preservation... and..."

Wait, what were you doing?
That's odd. You feel like you've been here before. There's a really strong sense of deja-vu.

"And?" Lyna asks, seeming impatient.

"Uh... yeah, self-preservation and tool use. All things that the other mutants didn't."

"And you have her with you? On the ship?" She questions.

"Yes, she's heavily sedated at the moment. I don't think the dodo cages would hold her if she woke up, but there's enough anesthetic in her system to put down a horse."

"I don't know what a horse is, but i'll assume no dosage is too high in this case. May i take a look at her? Take a few samples?"

"I don't see why not. Actually, i have something of yours on the ship, i think..."

"What's that? I don't remember leaving much of importance behind."

"Your potted plant."

"...Oh. Well, thank you?"

Man, your head's killing you.
And you seriously can't shake that feeling of deja-vu.

You hate when that happens. It always freaks you out, just a little bit.
You can't help but think about merging alternate timelines or whatever. What if you just died in another universe? Maybe your suit's antimatter bottle randomly exploded, who knows.

Well, you can't let it get to you. You still have a lot left to do before your mind starts to go.

After taking a moment to ensure everything is in order here, the three of you head back to the ship while you continue to try and shake off that odd feeling you've got.
As you turn and head towards a different building, Cylia stops you.

"David? The ship's this way." She reminds you.

"I know, but i can't fit through the stairwell, remember?"

"Oh... right. A lot of the buildings are like that here, actually..." She mumbles to herself.

"Contractor work, from the early days of the station. Only predators are capable of doing the initial carving, before any sort of life support or amenities are in place." Lyna explains.

So, Zakera ward is one of the first levels that was mined out. And because there was no air, no gravity and no toilets, they sent in predator species to do the work.
And most of them are small, like you and Cylia... so the first buildings they built, they just built for themselves. Also explains why this place looks like shit.

Oddly thick walls, sometimes reinforced with steel plates. No windows on most of the buildings... large entrances despite the small doors inside.
If you had to guess, these buildings probably had airlocks on them at one point, which have since been removed.

They were temporary housing for the workers here. Interesting.

"I'm heading up to a different roof. Gildur will move the ship for me."

"Alright." Cylia replies. "I'd tell you to be careful, but..."

Yeah, the armor.

It doesn't take long for you to get up to the roof and hop over onto the Metal Gear.
When you do, Cylia and Lyna are waiting for you at the airlock. Lyna has her arms crossed again, and her gaze lingers on you for a moment.

"What?"

"It's nothing. Where is this Caithan?" Lyna asks.

You guide her to the cargo bay, where you've got the mutated Caithan locked up.
The automated door slides open to reveal Kyla inside, gently poking at the sleeping girl with a length of steel pipe.

She's startled by your entrance, and her pipe clangs against the ground as she drops it in surprise.

"Uh, i... i mean, i was just kind of curious. I mean, i haven't really... seen one of these mutants yet." She explains, blushing.

"Kyla, that thing would eat you alive if it woke up. You know that, right?"

"Maybe, but i bet i could take it..."

Kyla grips the warp-infused combat wrench on her belt. You can tell she's fantasized about using it a lot, though she's never really had the opportunity.

"Don't go antagonizing the patients, miss." Lyna orders, removing a small cloth bag from her shoulder.

She digs through it and assembles a small hypodermic needle, with which she attempts to draw a blood sample from the sleeping mutant.
However, the hair-thin needle simply deforms against her skin without penetrating. She tries again, and still fails.

Lyna seems annoyed, so you offer to grab something more sturdy from the medbay.
She agrees, and you return with a little bag of needles ranging from normal to marinade injector.

Lyna glances between you and the plastic baggie for a moment before grabbing the smallest needle and pouring sanitizer all over it.
She then pours sanitizer over the area she intends to pierce, and draws her blood sample.

The Caithan doesn't stir in the slightest.

You guess it makes sense. She can't really feel pain in the first place, so a needle poking her wouldn't be much bother.
Huh, you wonder if Lyna knows about that.

"They can't feel pain, you know."

"Yes, it seems that one of redsang's many effects was a dulling of both pain and, to a lesser degree, touch."

"No, i mean they can't feel it at all. As if all the pain receptors in their body have been destroyed. Just look at her."

Lyna looks over the mutated caithan and finds her covered in little wounds, some of them probably already having been there before you arrived.
Without a sense of pain, she can't feel herself being injured. Stubbed toes and little cuts aside, even her bones are broken and it didn't affect her at all.

"...Can't you be a bit gentler with them?" Lyna asks.

"I was. She did a lot of that damage herself when i tried to grapple her."

Lyna sighs through her nose and continues looking her over.

"Her wounds are all full of clotted blood. Is that your doing?"

"Just trying to keep her alive, man. I'm not a doctor."

"Clearly."

Lyna takes something out of her bag and injects it into the mutant with a hypo-stim.

"What's that?"

"A mixture of blood thinner and medical nanomachines. They'll help close the torn blood vessels and capillaries and promote growth of new ones around the wound."

Next, Lyna slowly runs her hands over the Caithan's body. She's feeling the muscles underneath it's skin, and apparently paying close attention to the extra fur growth as well.
You see her stare at Cylia's hand and arm while she's feeling up the mutant's. Is she making some kind of comparison?

"What? What is it?" Cylia asks, clearly uncomfortable with being stared at.

"The muscles here are more developed, but the distribution is slightly different, as is the bone structure" Lyna announces. "The changes aren't just cosmetic, obviously. But they run deeper than expected."

"Down to the blood and bone." You surmise. "Anyone could have told you that."

"The important takeaway is that they aren't simply random changes, nor do they seem to be unique. I'll have to run a comparative analysis to be sure..."

"Be sure of what?"

"I believe this woman may have reverted to an earlier stage of evolution."

"...What, like cavemen?"

"Whatever you'd like to call it. But i know, many apex predator species have evolved from simpler, more savage creatures."

"So cavemen."

"Mmm." Lyna replies, ignoring you.

"So this is what Caithans used to look like...? Cyl, you know anything about this?"

"No, not really. If you asked a scientist, maybe..."

Looking at her now, Cylia seems almost transfixed on the mutant.

You can't help but wonder what Cylia's thinking right now.
You kinda have an idea, though. If there was an early hominid ancestor of yours right in front of you, you'd kind of be interested in them too.

They might just try to tear you limb from limb if you went and talked to them, though.

"So, is that all?" You ask.

"No, not nearly. To be honest, i'd like to treat her wounds properly and place her under observation, but..."

Yeah, nobody's really in a place to do that right now.
The station is totally fucked. You could be attacked by the Feds at any moment. There isn't enough manpower to do much of anything right now and you have way more important shit to be doing, including fixing those three issues.

"I'm afraid i can't help you either, at the moment."

"Yes, i'm sure. There are more pressing issues. Can you place her in cryosleep for now?" Lyna asks.

"Yeah, i think that'd be for the best. And in the meantime... why don't you run some blood tests on my crewmembers while you're at it?"

"Ah, right. You wanted a general health checkup, didn't you? I'll need a sample of each-"

Before she can finish speaking, you hand her a few bags of blood, frozen and preserved.
Your crew is full of odd characters, including rare species for which you can't simply find donor blood just anywhere.

Artificial blood is a thing that exists, and of course you have plenty of that too, but you can't replace all of the blood in your body with it. Not for long, anyways.
So you have your crew donate their own blood to themselves on a regular basis, just to keep a supply on hand.

Alongside that, you hand her a data chit containing all the medical information from the basic regular testing you do.
You know, just to make sure everyone isn't going to keel over tomorrow, or that they haven't been poisoned with dark matter or something.

The food on the ship is also a bit of a problem, and the whole crew is on pills for that too.

Needless to say, keeping on top of your crew's health is critical for a lot of reasons.
That's why you're glad you're getting this done right now. Just...

"I'll only give you one warning. I take my privacy very seriously. If i see mine or my crew's genetic data anywhere it shouldn't be, you're gonna have a problem."

"So mistrusting." Lyna sighs. "Have i done something to deserve such an attitude?"

>Yeah. You strike me as the type who'd do whatever you need to get whatever you want. That's all the reason i need.
>I don't have any proof of anything, but you just feel suspicious as hell, and i'm a man who trusts my gut when it comes to that sort of thing.

>>

"...Alright, look. This might sound stupid, but there's a bit of a superstition on my planet. Kind of a joke... i think. Maybe not at this point, who fuckin' knows.
But the crux of it is that lizard-like humanoid aliens had infiltrated our planet and set up a shadow government to control the populace whilst going around wearing human faces."

"What?"

"And because of that... well, don't be shocked if anyone from my planet doesn't trust you, even jokingly. Because you're a lizard person."

"I'm not a lizard." She asserts.

"I promise you, nobody is going to care whether you actually are or not."

"I... that's..."

Lyna lets off a big, frustrated sigh as she rubs her eyes. She's been sighing a lot today.
She doesn't say anything after that. She just sort of stares at you, looking annoyed.

"I told you it might-"

"Does. Absolutely does." She interrupts.

"Does sound stupid. But there you have it. Plus, well..."

"What? Is there some other ridiculous reason besides that?"

"Yeah, actually. You may or may not remember it, but we've actually met before. And back then, you seemed pretty interested in my... genetic material."

"...So it was you after all, Pinky?"

Pinky?

"Pinky?" Cylia says, echoing your thoughts.

"I very much suspected, after i saw this ship. I doubted it had changed hands, even if it has a new coat of paint." Lyna continues. "The infamous "Captain Rockefeller" that's been going around the news circles lately."

"Infamous? What am i infamous for?"

"Oh, nothing much. You're known to be a top-notch mercenary. Whoever you were sent after either came back crippled or dead. Then there are rumors that you have ties to Dark Star, and Thekia Station's underworld...
But most recently, there was an article in the galactic news that a Federation enforcement fleet was "severely damaged" by a large group of pirates, supposedly led by none other than yourself." She explains.

"Oh, that's bullshit! Almost everything about it!"

Lyna nods.

"It seemed quite suspicious to me as well. I doubt that there's a pirate presence large enough to subdue an enforcement fleet in this sector, including Dark Star. That said-"

"There was no pirate fleet! It was just the Metal Gear and the Star-Fall! And Gron was sitting on his ass getting shot at the whole time!"

"..."

"And the Feds didn't just get "severely damaged", i took out their AIs and hauled off the drone ships for myself! I used those exact ships to take over this damned station!"

Lyna unconsciously lets her jaw drop, just slightly.
She looks towards Cylia for some sort of confirmation, who just closes her eyes and nods slowly.

"Fucking typical, spinning a bunch of bullshit to try and frame me. Fuck 'em."

"David, calm..." Cylia coos, patting your armor.
