RECAP:
ANON is the son of an abusive alcoholic who wastes his youth by partaking in urban exploring and scavenging trash to pawn off in an attempt to feed himself and his younger sister.
This numb and cynical teen is currently undergoing the Pokémon Trainer License Exam, a test implemented by the government to weed out failures and dangerous individuals from owning and training Pokémon.

After barely passing the first portion of the test, a written exam ANON has been put on a REMEDIAL CLASS alongside a small group of curious individuals. He must attend every day for the remainder of the week unless every member of the class manages to get a Pokémon of their own.

So far, he had a close encounter with a criminal group in an attempt to make some quick cash. He managed to partially tame an emaciated Houndour who was abused by illegal breeders and is currently working on how to get her back to fighting shape and get her to follow his commands.

After being wiped out on their first battle by a selective mute/ Pokémon Trainer savant, ANON makes his way to the public library to learn more about Houndour’s diet and physiology. But before that, he has made a quick stop home to get his younger sister out of the house, she´s been stuck with your father for days now.

Great to see you back, QM. I hope you're doing pretty well.

You briefly considered ordering takeout to keep your father busy and make your escape easier, but you don’t have a cell phone and the landline has been dead for a while now. The last time you used it, you tried to call child protective services only for your father to pay off the social worker who came and then proceeded to impart one of the worst beatings of your life. You could also coerce Houndour into starting a small fire to draw out your father but know him, he must be getting too hammered to notice.


ANON sneaks around the property, quietly so as to not draw any attention, making his way to the side of the house. Houndour stays behind as she’s still comfortable getting inside buildings.

There’s a single window there that leads to his room. It’s a bit too small for him to cross it without causing a ruckus but his sister should be able to cross it without a hitch.

After confirming that only his sister is in the room, ANON knocks on the glass to catch her attention. The young girl who was busying herself sketching in her notebook gets startled, almost jumping from her seat, letting out a sigh of relief after seeing its just you.

You communicate across the closed windows by reading each other lips and gesturing to each other, after years of living under the roof of an irritable and violent drunk you’ve come up with a way to talk to each other without making any noise to avoid inciting his pointless wrath.

You tell her about your outing to the library and ask her to come with you. She’s apprehensive at first, not wanting to get into trouble with your father but she comes around when you tell her she can bring her sketchbook and art supplies with her. Quickly she gets everything on her old schoolbag, double-checks that father isn’t near to hear her, and slowly opens the window towards momentary freedom.

Your sister, Houndour and you are walking down the street. Your little sister, feeling a bit excited at the surprise outing as well as seeing you with a Pokémon, tried to carelessly approach Houndour while asking you where you met her and how you managed to tame her. This sudden approach made Houndour growl violently and get ready to attack his sibling.

The girl, your sister, is too scrawny and small for her age, no wonder Houndour would deem her weak enough to attack her.

How did ANON handle this situation?

With a calm but harsh tone, you commanded Houndour to stop her growling and then focused your attention on calming your already nervous wreck of a sibling, explaining to her that Houndour is not fully tamed yet and are you are in the process of doing so. “Don’t worry, I got her under control, she’s just not used to people” You partially lied, you are pretty good at downplaying most situations. You told your sister a bit about this year’s trainer test and how you can´t use any Poke balls to keep her in place. The girl promised to be more careful around your canine.
Since your sibling was still feeling uneasy you offered to give her a ride on your bike, promising that you wouldn’t go too fast as you tend to do. She insists that you tend to run wild whenever you start biking, but you are sure that’s just her cautious nature talking.

She stands on the two metal pegs sticking out of the back wheel and holds onto you. As you calmly pedal through the streets you keep an eye on Houndour, being vigilant of any aggressive behavior towards your sister. The beasts seem to understand that she’s being kept in check by you so there´s no more threats towards your relative.

It doesn’t take long for your sister to get in a better mood, as you bike through the city, she keeps bringing up places that your family used to visit. The public park where your father used to take you two, the restaurant you frequented whenever the weekend came around, the ice cream shop where he used to take the two of you to celebrate any occasion. Even though she’s enjoying the ride, she sounds nostalgic for those times. When your father still tried to be a “family man”, even after your mother passed. But those days are long gone.

After some more minutes biking you arrive at your destination, at the sight of the building Houndour decides to wander off, looking for a place to lay. You tell her to not stray too far away. The mutt who responds with a disinterested grunt.

The building is ample and solitary. Two floors whose halls are brimming with all manners of books. At first glance, the whole place has an outdated air to it, as if you just walked into a place that has been frozen in time, the old rugs adorning the floor, the corny posters inciting kids to read (featuring a cartoon Meowth wearing glasses), the drawing now yellowed by the passage of time, etc.

But there’s even an area fitted with slightly outdated computers with internet access. Hell, you can even get movies and some video games, not that you have much interest in those, it just took you by surprise.

It’s one of few places that hasn’t fallen into disarray after the city started going under. Whoever oversees this place seems to put some effort into keeping it functional.

It’s a bit late, the sun is already setting and there’s barely anyone else in this place. You need to make the most of your time before the library closes. You are not familiar with this place, but it shouldn’t be too hard to find books related to Houndour’s habits, nature, biology, etc.

You´ve never been too keen on academics, but you have decided to give it your all.

The books you found regarding Houndour and fire types in general are way too dense, the information they contain it´s mostly educational and academic, things researchers, biologists, and probably vets can understand but not your apathetic, uninformed teenage brain.
Maybe you tried to tackle books that are too complicated for a complete novice on Pokémon rearing and biology, so you instead opt to consult “How to” guides and short manuals aimed at rookie trainers. The info on them is more digestible but not too useful, just the basics and a couple of useful tips. Finally, you resort to browsing the net in search of help, but the thing is, since you’ve never had a computer at home you are pretty much tech-illiterate. You don’t know where to search for useful information nor how to discern between what’s pure bullshit and what’s actually sound advice. It’s just a cybernetic cacophony of nonsense.

Everything seems to be either too simple and lacking to be truly trustworthy and worth the hours you’ve wasted here or too technical and complicated for your uneducated brain that keeps bombarding you with waves of apathy and boredom the moment you try to make sense of each thick, undecipherable paragraph.

So basically, the gist of it is:

Houndours are omnivores by nature, aside from some vegetables and spices that are harmful to them, they can eat most things. Lean meats and hearty vegetables seem like the way to go. Some specific types of highly nutritional roots could help her diet but they tend to have a strong taste that most Pokémon dislike so they must be used sparingly.

For severely malnourished mons like her, whose diet has consisted only of regular kibble and trash, Milktank Milk can be a great addition to their meals. Maybe you can try and make some form of stew for her. Since she’s not used to this kind of food, she needs something easier on the stomach.
You wrote down everything you need to make her a meal on a small list, you’ll try to get those ingredients sooner than later.

For Houndour in particular, there are certain foods experienced trainers add to their diet on the regular. Their evolutionary line produces this weird noxious and flammable gas that is the basis for most of its Fire Type moves, the bulk of it is produced inside their gut, where their “microbiota” which your sister explained, is the microorganism that live inside of the mon, produces this gas and its toxins. Some foods and chemicals promote the growth of these bacteria, but it can be harmful to the Houndour if it goes unchecked.

And regarding training, some tips you’ve found are the importance of team exercises, Houndours are highly sociable and perform better when they feel like part of a “pack”, cardiovascular exercises to improve their lung function are advised as well, this way they develop a better control to expel those flammable gases, meaning more powerful Flamethrowers.

It’s getting late, the clock marks the closing of the library, is around 10:00 pm and your sister is starting to get a bit tired.

Before you go, the librarian tells you that if you wish, you can take out a book if you wish too and return it at a later date. There’s a limit of one per visitor, and since you are a high school student, you can take one without an issue. Your sister asks if she can take one as well but becomes disappointed after learning that younger kids can only take books out if their guardian is present.

You are now well into the night, Houndour waited for you outside the library thankfully staying out of trouble while out of your view. The three of you walk through the streets, with you between the canine and the girl to avoid any altercations between the two. The whole trip she’s been holding the book close to her chest unable to contain a shy smile that won’t go away.

Before you go home, you pass by that food truck you found earlier. They are still hiring delivery boys. The line cooks are still going at it hard, chopping, frying, and packing an immodest amount of junk food. The pay is still 1,500 per day, plus the tips you make during your deliveries. You only need your own means of transportation and know your way around the city, and you are confident enough in your biking skills to carry you through the city. It’s a legitimate job and it wouldn’t be getting in the way of the Remedial Class or school hours. But you’ve left with very little time to yourself, ending the shift at late hours at night.

The spicy and salty aroma coming from the junk food being prepared by the food truck is tempting, you haven’t had a bite since breakfast, but you still have plenty of food from the groceries you bought and besides streets become dangerous the later it gets. Right now, a small scuffle between members of two rival gangs seems to be brewing near the food truck. A petty fight regarding territory or something, they got their mons out and are hurling insults and provocations at each other. So you decide to hasten your return home, you don’t want your little sister to experience gang violence, she’s feeling cheery and it could ruin her mood.

Before you realize it you have returned home, Houndour once again went to her usual spot, still refusing to enter your house. The light seems off and it’s dead quiet from the outside, so you hoped that you are father had already passed out from drinking, but you were wrong.

He stands up, the man is out of shape but still corpulent. He’s barely taller than you but you feel as if he towered above you. He grabs you by the shoulder, painfully digging his fingers in, and brings you closer.

“I don’t care where you go or what you do with yourself as long as you don’t bring any trouble here.”

“But keep your sister out of your business. I don’t want you to drag her along with whatever you are doing.”

You don’t want to look him in the eye, you keep silent trying to keep your cool as best as you can, to avoid doing or saying anything stupid and making the situation worse.
He doesn’t like that, you feel the back of his hand striking your cheek, strong enough to cause some bleeding but not enough to bring you down onto your feet.

Pushing through the pain you manage to stand up and start your morning routine. First, you wake up your younger sibling and then proceed to stumble into your room and gather your belongings.
Taking a quick shower while trying to avoid looking at your bruised body, the visage of your weak self feels momentarily sickening. The water colliding with your skin stings as it hits the hematomas and cuts. Changing into the cleanest set of clothes you can find.

You prepare a simple breakfast for yourself and your sister, aided by the little one. Some scrambled eggs and toast. Every moment is painful, but you start to grow accustomed to the sensation and soon enough, you are able to ignore it for the most part.

“I’m sorry…” your sister tries to apologize, as she feels that the punishment imparted by your father’s inebriated rage was her fault, but you tell her to drop it, that she didn’t do anything wrong and that’s not a big of a deal. “Just another beating”
But she can’t stop feeling responsible, the girl can’t even bear to look at you from the guilt and pleads that you should just stay home and rest, or at the very least go to the school’s infirmary once you are there. You keep telling her not to worry. But she keeps pushing. You know she means best but it’s starting to get under your skin. Making her worried when you are the one who should be taking care of her.

“Just drop it, alright? I don’t need you worrying about me” it ended up coming out in a harsher tone than you intended. You can’t help it, you are in pain, you are tired and irritated and she keeps blaming herself for it.
Your words are enough to make her huddle in her seat, “Sorry, I won’t bring it up.” For a moment you see your sister feel a bit unnerved because of you, with the same expression she looks at your father with. And you can’t blame her. After all, just for a moment, your voice almost sounded like his.

As you watched your sister go on her way, the awkwardness still lingered in the air. But there’s no time to dwell on it. Taking out your bike you get ready to meet Houndour before class, there’s a chance you could find some easier opponents to battle during lunch and that would certainly help her get some more experience in combat. On the other, having her around such a large, cramped crowd that is a classroom full of teens seems like a recipe for disaster, so you’ll have her wait near the entrance, and call her out if the opportunity arises.

As you start to pedal the bike, the dull pain becomes more noticeable, your muscles ache most uncomfortably. There seem to be no broken bones, or at least you want to believe there aren’t, but trying to ride your bike, or any activity that requires some amount of physical effort is rather painful.

Once she’s finished, she gives you a disheartened look. Is it disappointment? Pity? You aren’t sure, but Houndour looks almost melancholic for a moment before shaking off and returning to her usual self.

Before you know it, the two of you stand before your destination. “Ordaz Highschool” is an underfunded public school that prepares the youth of today for the disappointments of tomorrow. There’s not much of note in your school, or at least you haven’t seen anything of the like. The school’s battling team is mediocre at best. No notable people to speak of have come from these learning halls. And the more exposure it has had was when a member of the drama club killed himself on stage a couple of years ago in a freak accident involving a Hypno. But that’s a story for another time.

Just like you predicted, kids are gathering in droves with their newly acquired mons, most of them seem to have small, mammal-like normal types you can find anywhere on the street, they are either playing around, showing their critters to their friends, or are struggling to get them to listen to them. Easy pickings.

Even then, among the sea of incompetent rookies, there are some outliers you can see. Some of the kids have managed to bring rarer mons, you want to get a better read at what you are dealing with here but first, you need to deal with Houndour.

A glance around reveals a small ditch near the school grounds. It should suffice as a hiding spot for Houndour during the next couple of hours.
After placing her food and water on the ground you instruct her to stay in place and only come out if you call for her. From what you read at the library, Houndours are supposed to have pretty nifty hearing and she seems to be able to recognize your voice after a couple of days of being together.
So far, she hasn’t disappointed. You are not on friendly terms, but she’s proven willing to follow your commands as long as it benefits her. You are slowly but certainly coming to an understanding. Now, you want to believe that she’ll be able to stay put and avoid trouble without further goading.

“Houndour, I’m not sure how much of my words you understand so I hope I can get my point across. You’ve done a good job so far and I expect that you’ll be able to keep it up.”

You want to make it clear that you are placing your expectations upon her. Her ears perk up at the change in your tone, but her facial expression is rather awkward and confused. Having someone put their trust in her must be a completely new experience for the mutt, even if it's something so simple.

Leaving the canine behind you venture inside the learning facility. Your school day starts with the daily greeting of a security guard and a metal detector. It was put a couple of years ago to reduce the number of students sneaking knives, pistols, and the most dangerous of all, loaded Poke balls. The guards ask for a Trainer License for anyone carrying the capturing devices before letting them in.

As you walk through the halls of these prestigious halls of teenage apathy and hormones you glance upon a little group who are raising quite the ruckus. A group of three thugs from a higher grade are harassing this tiny, skinny kid dressed in all black. You recognize the victim, he’s in your class.

“Where are you going in such a hurry? Are you too busy to say hi to your friends? You little bitch I feel like that lack of respect demands some retribution. To compensate for our hurt feelings” The largest of the kids taunts in a verbose manner. The little guy, being surrounded can only look at the floor while trying to stutter pointless explanations at his aggressors.

For an unfortunate draw of fate, this group of assholes have designated this kid as their personal punching bag and errand boy. They expertly toe the line between inane harassment and actual harm to not raise the attention of the mostly apathetic school body. Going back and forth from verbal abuse disguised as friendly jabs to the occasional physical injury.

The kid raises his head and looks around, looking for an out, he recognizes you, and then…
