You were made to sit down with your cousins on the floor by your Pappy, surrounded by your cousins who wait patiently to listen to Pappy. Pappy places his hat on your, oversized for your tiny head.

"Listen here Little Ones, Pappy will teach you Our First Memory!"

Before We learned to remember, We only ever wanted to fill Our tummies and nap all day. We had no place to call home as We took from the Earth and Trees We ate and slept and when it died We would go find newer Earth and Trees to take from. We do not know how long We have done this as We did not care to Remember the Earth and Trees We took from.

We were content with Our way of life so long as it filled Our tummies and gave us time to nap all day. But as We continued to live this way newer Earth and Trees became scarce. That was when We came across the Demons who were hungrier than Us and tireless not like Us, and they did not want Us to take what few Earth and Trees were left. They chased Us to the Wide Waters, trapping us between the Demons of the Earth and the Dragons of the Waters. Then from the Wide Waters emerged the Great Turtle carrying Earth and Trees on Its back! It took pity on Us and swam to the shore shooing away the Dragons and allowing Us to climb onto Its Earth and Trees. Then It swam off into the Wide Waters before the Demons could join and when We were safe from the Demons and Dragons, the Great Turtle spoke:

"You are now my guests and I am your host. It is my respect for you and your respect for me that shelters you. Please do not forget my compassion."

We were so hungry and tired from being chased by the Demons that we immediately began to take from the Great Turtle to fill Our tummies and fall asleep, and We continued this without regard to the Earth and Trees. One day We noticed that the Earth and Trees had become too stinky and messy for Us to sleep in. So the Great Turtle Spoke:

"It is my respect for you that I allowed you to rest without disturbance. Please do not forget my empathy."

We had been rude guests to the Great Turtle, trashing Our host who sheltered Us. We cried and promised to remember Its empathy whenever We took from its Earth and Trees, cleaning up after Ourselves. We continued to feast and soon found that the Earth had become empty and the Trees did not grow so We became hungry. That was when Our host spoke:

"It is my respect for you that I continue to offer my gifts. Please do not forget my diligence.

We still had much to learn to be good guests, We had overburdened Our host who worked tirelessly to offer Us gifts. We cried and promised to remember Its diligence, combing Its Earth and trimming Its Trees to help It heal and rejuvenate its Earth and Trees. We came to eat less so that We would have more Little Ones for what little Earth and Trees Our host could provide.
We lived happily with Our host like this until It fell sick despite how much We combed Its Earth and trimmed Its Trees. We cried fearing that We were still rude guests and that We may lose Our host. So Our host said:

"It is my respect for you that I enjoyed your company. Please do not forget my hospitality."

We did not live forever and it was no different for the Great Turtle. Its years were as long as Our lives, so We cried for Our host and promised to remember Its hospitality as It swam back to the shore that We had not seen for thousands of seasons. We saw that the Earth was empty and the Trees without green, much like the Great Turtle was becoming. Before arriving at the shore, the Great Turtle said:

"This was once my host where I lived with my kind until we consumed it to dust. We were not good guests to our host, but it is not too late for you. I am the last of my kind and I should have died long ago. It was my love for you that kept me swimming for so long. Please do not forget the Memories We made together."

We cried for Our host as It began Its eternal slumber. But It will forever remain with Us so long as We do not forget its compassion, empathy, diligence, hospitality, and love. That is why We clean up after Ourselves, why We still eat sparingly, why We still comb the Earth and trim the Trees, and why We never stop making Memories with each other.

Welcome to Lingdom Quest, a quest about traveling across the Lingdom using the setting I built on /tg/ over here: >>>/tg/90946850

Let's build our character, shall we?

You're only 5 years old and there's a good chance that Our First Memory was lost on you. It's okay, it won't be the last time you'll hear of it. You just want to go outside and play with your cousins and neighbors but Baba stops you before you leave, asking you to get dressed properly before you go out and play.

What's the proper way for you to dress?
>Put on trousers because you're a boy.
>Put on a skirt because you're a girl.
>"No!" Run outside underdressed because pants are uncool.

You're too young to care about how your hair looks, but you don't get to decide what color it is. Well, you do but not you.

12 for Girl
12 for Medium Hair
10 for Vietnamese Pronouns

Interestingly, the majority votes for both Girl and Vietnamese came from each other (8 voters), while the majority of votes for both Boy and English came from each other (7 voters). What does this mean? Probably nothing.

Some of your cousins and neighbors were too eager to go outside and play, darting out before Baba had a chance to even ask them to get dressed properly. But not you, who without hesitation tied on your skirt before leaving.

>No votes for pantslessness
You knotted your skirt all by yourself with no help from Baba. Your friend had trouble knotting his trousers so you helped him when he asked for help. Baba was so impressed by how helpful you were that she gave you 1 coin!

Baba commends you for being so well-behaved and pats you on the head to praise you by name. Baba knows your name, but do you?

What is your name, Little One?
>Meli
>Sairi
>Himi
>Rika
>Write-in (Will be Lingicized, Ling names are mostly two syllables, never one, sometimes three.)

You run outside to join your cousins and neighbors, some of them were running around only in their shirts. They'll probably be scolded at home.

It is important for tiny Little Ones to play with their friends as much as they can to make Memories as they don't have much to share, being so young and new to the world. How did you most like to play?
>Rolling in the dirt with your friends, +1 Toughness
>Whatever your friends wanted to play, +1 Sensitivity

I was just reminded, be careful of a certain schizo that showed up in a few threads before. He started in the first 2023 survival thread, claiming to defend the quest and picking fights with random posters without actually participating himself. The removed posts early in the thread are mostly him.

In another subsequent thread about surviving an apocalypse caused by eternal darkness, he showed up to complain about getting banned and spammed bots to vote for the youngest character age and "sex" as her addiction. I don't have the archive link on hand, but someone's bound to find it somewhere. Just keep an eye out in the case he's still around, QM. Your threads in /tg/ are great and you don't deserve to have your quest shit up.

It's probably the division of the voting anons themselves in qst. Just as a warning, there tends to be lots of schizos and passive aggressiveness in this board.
Also keep in mind since the mc is female there will probably be some controversial votes in the future (hopefully not, but I don't have much optimism).

I can't help but wonder if Mat Troi is supposed tobe vietnamese. I can interpret it as either Mất Trời which means "lost god/heaven" or Mặt Trời wich means "god's/heaven's face". However, the Lingicization of this would probably turn it into either Manloi or Mamroi.

>>5833044
Do you mean Máy Mở? I'm pretty sure that means something like "opening machine", much like an automatic can opener. If that's the case, Maima might be better since Ling "O" is English long O while Vietnamese "Ơ" is more like a schwa, which is like the "u" in "but", and I think that's closer to Ling "A" like the basic 5-vowel system.

Yes, I'm also a Charlie and can read Charlie alphabet and tones.

Anyway, if you want to indulge in my autism, I have actually designed the phonology and photactics of Ling language. I'm not really going to use it in this quest since everything but personal names are meant to be translated into plain English instead. For anybody mildly curious, they have a syllabary comprised of 142 characters.

Thanks for the correction, that makes sense. You've put a lot of attention into aspects of culture in your setting that make it feel like it actively functions.

>There might be a tie
I wonder what would happen in that case. Usually it would be up to a random roll, but if a combination like Charm and Toughness, Crafting and Charm, or Crafting and Toughness lined up, I wonder what skill that would result in. Just a thought.

You, Rika, love playing outside in the sunshine and the trees. The first thing you did when you ran outside was to roll down a hill, racing against your friends. If Baba saw you she might have thought it would have been better you didn't put your skirt on. Oh well.

You were also the best at Run & Hide, a traditional game where all the Little Ones must run and hide except for one, who must seek them out, chase them down, and tag them. When a player is tagged, they too must go seek and tag other players with the original. You were really good at this game because you were an excellent climber. Climbing trees is a skill everybody soon learns, but you take it to the next level and climb houses, often displaying yourself on the rooftop where nobody else could reach. You're usually the last person to be tagged or the first person to be it, and nobody could outrun or outclimb you.
+3 Charm

Aside from the more physical games, you're also fun to play House with, your peers think you make good animal impressions, or maybe it's because you're strong enough to let them ride you.
+2 Charm

You're known to be very good at throwing rocks, but have challenged yourself to throw rocks even further. Sometimes you bang rocks and sticks together to see how you can make something that is easier to throw. The best you came up with was a rock tied to a stick, which gave good leverage for throwing

Every year during the coming of Autumn, the Salmon return from the Wide Waters to lay their eggs for Us to host. In return for Our hospitality, the Salmon offer their flesh as a gift, and We watch over their babies until they hatch and return to the Wide Waters in the Spring.

One morning after waking up and eating breakfast, Papa and Mama told you and your cousins to get ready to go to the Hammock for the Salmon Welcoming Festival. You didn't quite understand what they meant because you just got out of your hammock, but your Anh Tiko explained the Hammock was the largest village in the world where Tallies lived who had so many games for you to play and candies to eat. This year was Anh Tiko's 5th time visiting the Hammock, and he promised to take you to the most fun places he remembered.

Before We built Groves and hosted corn and rice, We were guests of these Earths and Trees from the Wide Waters to the High Earths. We combed the Earth and trimmed the Trees to enjoy their fruit without feeling bad. Whenever We felt We overstayed Our welcome, We thanked the Earth and Trees with gifts before saying goodbye to find a new host.

A good guest does not trash their host, so We carried Our clothes, snacks, and Memories in Our hammocks whenever We moved, leaving nothing behind to disrespect Our host. If We could not carry it then it was not Ours to keep, but Our hosts were always kind enough to give Us everything else We needed.

Anh Tiko helped you pack your clothes and hammock. It was your first time doing anything like this, your Mama and Papa had always hung your hammock and stowed your clothes for you. With Anh Tiko, you unkotted your hammock from your favorite spot and laid it down spreading your blanket on it. He taught you how to neatly fold your clothes and wrap them in cloth baggies. Then he showed you how to arrange your baggies on your blanket before wrapping it all up into one pack, using the hammock's fastening ropes as straps for a makeshift backpack. Now you're ready to visit the Hammock!

You and your cousins staged your packs outside your house before setting off. Even though this was your home, one should always behave like a guest, so you helped Baba and Pappy to tidy it before leaving. When it was time to go, you and your cousins went to pick up your packs, but there were so many of them! How could you be so sure which one is your pack?

It's obviously the blanket with...
>The swimming turtles!
>All the spirals!
>The many different colored flowers!
>Covered in fruits and nuts!
>Nothing but my favorite color! (every anon is going to have to pretend the hammock is their favorite color.)

You leave your village for the first time you can remember, following a Baba while being surrounded by other Grown-Ups who were there to make sure you don't do something stupid like run away. They made you hold hands with a friend so that you'd both be responsible for each other.

You held hands with...
>Your cousin Kari (f) who you were inseparable from!
>Your friend and neighbor Bubu (m) who couldn't even put on his trousers and would probably get lost without you!
>Anh Tiko because he'll never let you go missing!

I hope this hasn't come off as the infamous quest opener where we spend 3 weeks building a character, so I can only pray these bits at least give off cute and comfy but entertaining worldbuilding to acclimate you to the setting. Please enjoy this piece of art of this culture's home, Rika would be someone who'd climb a pole.

Your blanket was the one that Baba embroidered with all those swimming turtles. Even Kari and Anh Tiko had swimming turtle embroidery, along with the rest of your cousins and siblings. But yours was special because you know there was one turtle missing an eye that Baba forgot. Your neighbors can't tell them apart, but your whole family sure could.

You held hands with Bubu most of the way, you couldn't help but feel he'd get lost on his own! Even though there were Grown-Ups to make sure nobody did, you found yourself constantly tugging on Bubu's arm because he kept getting distracted by every little thing, such as flowers, bugs, seeds, or rocks. People like to sing when they travel and with such a large group, everybody took turns picking a song for them all to sing. Bubu had trouble with the lyrics, mumbling gibberish but matching the rhythm for every line but the chorus. When it was his turn to lead the singing he just started mumbling gibberish in a pleasant if not unknown rhythm. Everybody quickly picked up the rhythm and just sang their own gibberish.
+1 to Relationship: Bubu

It took several days to reach the Hammock, but you stopped by a few villages every day, becoming its guests and accepting their gifts. Your hosts didn't ask for much, only asking you what you were most excited about in exchange for some refreshments and snacks. Before sunset, you would be invited to rest at the schoolhouse of the village you were in where you hung your hammock to sleep with your cousins and neighbors. You had to help Bubu with his.

How do you like hanging up your hammock?
>I like it high, so I have to climb up to get into it!
>As long as it swings enough to rock me to sleep!
>Somewhere low and easy to get to so I can crawl in and crawl out!
>Actually, I like sleeping on the floor!

Little Ones are naughtier than their parents would like them to be. You're supposed to be asleep, but you like to stay up late to talk. Who do you like talking to most when you shouldn't be?
>"My cousin Kari so we can make sure we share the same Memories for the day!"

You always loved sleeping as high as you could. The first thing you did when you learned how to set up your hammock was to climb as high as you could with Kari and set up your hammocks together. Back home you and Kari would hang your hammocks up high in one corner away from the ears of your parents so you could talk all night long and share Memories.

Every night you and Kari would climb to the highest spot available and quickly set up your hammocks. One night, the highest spot only had room for one, so you and Kari decided to share hammocks, though you had to bother Anh Tiko to let him use his larger one for the both of you to share.
+1 to Relationship: Kari

Kari was as much a sister to you as your other siblings, except the best part about Kari was that she was your age so you did everything together. The two of you share birthdays, though one of you was born earlier than the other. Your parents never said who was older, so the two of you constantly argue over who is older, usually to settle a dispute. You think you're older because you're better at climbing trees, but Kari thinks she's older because she's better at listening to people. As far as your parents were concerned, you're both responsible for each other.

After a few days of marching with your friends and elders, you finally reached the Hammock. You have never seen so many tall and wide houses, especially ones made of rock. Anh Tiko said this was a quiet part of the Hammock, one usually reserved for Little Ones such as yourself. You walked along the edge of a waterway and railed off to ensure no Little One accidentally fell in. Plenty of other Little Ones from other villagers were on the other side of the waterway, waving and singing along with you. Behind you were rows of stalls with some of the sweetest food you ever smelled. You didn't know which to pick, so Anh Tiko got a sample plate for you with his favorite candies. The samplers were the most delicious you tasted, and when Anh Tiko asked you which was your favorite, you couldn't decide.

Which snack was your favorite of Anh Tiko's sample?
>Jam-Filled Dumplings
>Honey-Covered Grubs
>Caramel-Glazed Fruit
>Sugar-Coated Sunflower Seeds
>Syrup-Cored Jawbreakers
>Write-in (no meats but seafood and insects okay)

You liked it so much that you went to get more to share with someone important to you, running off to the stand to get it. You asked nicely to the pappy at the stand for more of your new favorite snack, but pappy said only good Little Ones can get a treat. So you pulled out the coin baba gave you to get your treat.

Who did you share your favorite snack with?
>"If I like this, then Kari definitely will!"
>"Bubu is a picky eater, but I know he'll enjoy this!"
>"Anh Tiko needs to know why this is the best one!"
>"On second thought, I should keep this all to myself because I've been such a good Little One!"

The Jam-Filled Dumplings were the best, you didn't know what flavor they were until you bit into it! Maybe that's why you thought Bubu might like it, he's always been too reluctant to try new food. So you decided to share your dumpling with Bubu and when he ate it he declared that it was his new favorite food! Now it's the only thing he'll eat...
Favorite Snack: Jam Filled Dumplings
+1 to Relationship: Bubu

Soon the elders asked all the Little Ones to behave and go watch the waters for the salmon. You found a spot at the edge of the waterways to sit with Bubu and Kari. Before you saw any salmon, you heard soft singing from down the waterways but couldn't discern the lyrics. It got nearer and louder and once you were able to make out the lyrics, you began singing along too. You sang about welcoming the salmon, and it did not take long for you to see them swimming up the waterways.

After all the salmon passed you, your elders let you play and eat. You didn't have any coins left, but some games and snack stalls were free, and you didn't mind waiting in line to throw coconuts at a net if you did it with Kari or Bubu. Soon your elders called for you, so you and the other Little Ones came to an open field surrounded by tall houses. The Grown-Ups had been busy while you were at play to prepare to serve salmon tacos.

We are normally forbidden from being guests to the Seas Below and the creatures from there are forbidden from being guests to the Earth and Trees. The Salmon is a guest from the Seas Below and because they took it upon themselves to visit Us, We must be good hosts. The Salmon is a polite guest, gifting their flesh for Us to enjoy when We are being good hosts. To host the salmon, We clean and clear the waters so they may swim easier. A tired Samon is a tasteless Salmon. We watch over their babies so they would return as Grown-Ups and continue to appreciate Our hospitality.

Maybe it's because you were too young to appreciate it, but those Jam-Filled Dumplings were definitely tastier than salmon tacos. Despite that, the salmon tacos was still your favorite part of the festival. It is this one time in the year where Our whole family comes together, and it is a Memory that all your new friends you made who lived on the other side of the world will have as well. It made you excited to know that you have family throughout the world, and that one day you must visit them and they must visit you.
>>
It has been several years since your first Salmon Welcoming Festival. You are around 10 years of age, the same as Anh Tiko was when you went on your first Salmon Welcoming Festival. Every year your elders ask more from you to help with chores, eventually they just stopped as you realized what they wanted and did it before they even asked of you.

Even though you had less time to play, you became particularly good at a certain set of tasks.
>Helping Elders with whatever they needed, even when they're too senile to make up their minds, so you just keep making tacos until they're convinced that's what they need.
>General Laboring in the fields, the crops can't sew themselves, and what better way to be productive than to do it with friends while you sing?
>Looking after the village animals, it's where you can be alone without becoming lonely.

You still very much miss the times when all you did was play, and sometimes you'd rather do nothing than not play. What's your problem? C'mon now, we all have them.

Laboring is such a drag, so why can't we play all day?

We all must do Our part to host the rice and maize so that it will gift Us the fruit We eat, and We all must do Our part to be guests to the Earth and Trees that gift Us the shade We sleep under.

It did not take long for it to become apparent that all the playtime you had as a Little One was only possible because your elders wanted to see you smile and make Memories. You didn't need to worry about starving, shivering at night, or sweating under a hot sun. Mama gave you three Ems (younger siblings in Vietnamese) and like how Anh Tiko worked hard to make sure you had what you needed to play, you must do the same for them!

Your time as a helping Little One started easy, beginning with you just watching Baba cook and getting her the spices and tools she needed, to getting another blanket for your shivering Pappy. It would move on to helping out around the village, such as carrying firewood from the forestry or bathing the village animals. These were small Labor details, but as you got older you started participating in Labor Parties, where the whole village gets together to labor in the fields with song and snacks.

It was time to harvest the rice and you went out to the paddies with your peers for your first labor party. You heard all sorts of scary rumors from Anh Tiko and his peers, such as how boring it could be! Some of your peers were feeling it too, their minds numbing from monotonous work. So you remembered a tip from Anh Tiko:

"If everybody sang and danced to a rhythm to your motion, it can get fun! Or you can play some word games that's easy enough for you to work while you play!"

You led your peers in singing, and while it made you work a bit slower, it certainly made the work more bearable. At the end of the day, the Babas and Pappies of the village made some Jam-Filled Dumplings with the rice you harvest. It is because of this work that your favorite snack could be made!

Because you were always moving and dancing with your tools, you became more attentive to their condition since you accidentally broke a few. Your frequent visits to the Village Forge made you a charming regular for the Grown-Ups who worked there, and sometimes you would ask about all the weird things they have.
+2 Toughness for getting out there
+1 Crafting for being a curious kid

Though you had so much fun during these Labor Parties, they were mentally exhausting so you found yourself appreciating your hammock more when it was time to sleep. You worked so hard the day before, so maybe you deserve a little bit more rest time. You thought you could get away with at first 5 more minutes, then 10, then 30... Your family didn't really notice since they assumed you had already gotten up to play until Bubu showed up to ask where you were. You earned a stern talking from Pappy, and even Kari was responsible since she was the one who let you sleep.
Sleepy Problem

What's the big deal? It's not like we have any work to do, so what if I want to sleep in instead of playing??? Your Popappy (Great-Grandfather) was severely disappointed in you, but you just put up with it by begging for forgiveness and showing your regret by sitting submissively. After some minutes of Popappy's talking you just left to play without thinking much about it.

Come sunset, when Bibaba (Great-Grandmother) rang the house bell, you and Kari returned home to help her prepare the evening meal. But Bibaba told you to go see Popappy at the waters first, so you and Kari went to go find Popappy, which was strange since he shouldn't be this far from home alone. You find him sitting on a log by the edge of the waters, his bare feet dipped onto the shallow edge.

"You two are lucky to have been born long after the Emperor banished the Meanies and reunited Us. It is because of Him that Our family can be so big and We surrounded by love. When Popappy was young as you, Popappy was not so lucky..."

Popappy shared his Memory of when he...

"When Popappy was as small as you, Our family was still separated for thousands of seasons in the Land Above. We did not visit these Earths and Trees for the Land Above was infested by loitering Meanies, but over time We got brave enough to reconnect Our family and share Our Memories.

We did not always wear these warm jackets as now, it didn't always get this cold. These Freezing Winters come and go and We always remember them, so We would save Our food for hundreds of seasons and hoped there was enough to get us through them. But the Meanies never remember the Freezing Winters no matter how many times it came, so they did not save any food and stole Ours.

We learned to be happy to live away from Our families after all these seasons, but it was time for Us to return to these Earths and Trees for fear that We may starve and have no Memories to share. Our families from across the Land Above came together, so We began Our March Back to the Great Turtle, where We learned that Our family who stayed still lived there and would welcome Us as We would welcome them.

Popappy had an animal friend when he was a Little one. She was big and furry and would let me ride her if I shared some food. When Popappy's Baba said it was time for Us to return to these Earths and Trees, he was scared that his animal friend would not come. But all of Our animal friends followed Us, so We marched back here together. Our march began in the Salt Flats where We only moved between sunset and sunrise when it was cool. When the sun was up We put shade to rest. Popappy's Baba said to not ride his animal friend even if he gave her food because it would be unfair. Even if Popappy wanted to, his Mama and Papa wouldn't give him food for his animal friend.

Popappy was so tired from marching all night that when it was time to nap, he napped all day while the other Little Ones played when it was dusk or dawn, sometimes annoyed because they were too loud for him. One day, Popappy's Baba said, "Please don't sleep all day, you wouldn't want your Memories of this trip to only be painful!" but he was in too much pain to care. Popappy thought if Poppay's Baba let him ride his animal friend, he wouldn't be too tired to play and make Memories.

When We crossed the mountains, the snow and wind bullied Us. If We did not keep moving We'd freeze and sleep forever. We found a frozen lake shielded from the wind and abandoned houses to keep Us warm. We could no longer travel in the snow and wind as it was too dangerous, so We sent Our strongest and healthiest down the mountain to find help while the rest of Us stayed. It was so cold that all Popappy wanted to do was stay inside and hug his friend for warmth. When Popappy was hungry, he would come out to ask for food, and his Baba would ask, "What Memories did you make today with your friends?" Popappy always lied because Popappy didn't want to upset her."

"We were stuck in the snow for several weeks, every day an animal friend disappeared. While all the other Little Ones played outside, Popappy stayed with his friend for warmth. Come sunset it was time to sleep, a Little One cried for their friend who disappeared only after leaving a gift for Us to eat. Popappy did not want to lose his friend who kept him warm, so Popappy hugged her all day and night, never leaving her side. One morning, Popappy's Baba came to hug him and his friend all day. Popappy never felt happier before and stayed quiet while Baba kept talking. Soon Baba stayed quiet so that Popappy could nap but the last thing he heard her saying was this: "Please continue to make and share Memories, even with your friend. She is a good friend." The next day, Popappy's Baba was gone. Mama and Papa said Baba had to go but she cooked some trout, Popappy's favorite, before leaving. It didn't taste like trout.

Popappy was never bothered by his Baba again."

Popappy could not contain his tears and began crying before finishing the story of the March Back to the Great Turtle. You and your cousin Kari could not help but become infected by it and began sobbing with Popappy. Popappy didn't finish sharing his Memory, but by the time the crying stopped the three of you were locked in a hug. After wiping the last of his tears from his face, Popappy spoke again.

"Popappy is sorry for being mad at you for sleeping. That was not fair but Popappy couldn't help but remember his Sad Memory. Popappy just doesn't want you to sleep away all your potential Memories like he did."

Popappy lifted a baggy he had between his feet onto his lap. Unwrapping it, he revealed two horns.

"Popappy's friend passed before your Babas and Pappies were born. These were her horns, but Popappy only gets sad when looking at them because they remind him of his Baba, so he hid them at home. Bibaba is the only other person Popappy shared this Memory to because it hurts too much to share. Popappy hopes these will help you wake up to make Memories."

You and Kari each receive one of the horns. Even though Kari wasn't the one sleeping, she was still responsible for letting you sleep too long. You and Kari walked Popappy home to enjoy shrimp tacos for dinner with the rest of your family, and none of you spoke of Popappy's Sad Memory that night.
You still have a sleeping problem, but hopefully this will encourage you to sleep less.

To commemorate this Memory, you and Rika decided to...

You and Kari both decided to turn your horns into necklaces, wearing them under your shirts so that it wouldn't make Popappy sad if he saw it. Every night the two of you hang your necklace above you so that when you open your eyes in the morning, you would be encouraged to get out of your hammock. It's most effective when either of you were already up and guilted into getting up.

The following spring you said bye to Anh Tiko who was now 15 years old and ready to embark on his Youthful Journey across the Lingdom where he would make Memories by laboring for his hosts, meeting new people, and reconnecting with relatives. He will return in the winter but depart again the following spring and repeat this until he is ready to settle down with a wife who you hope would be nice. Your Ems cried to see Anh Tiko go, making you the oldest child of your siblings still with Mama and Papa. By now you have gotten used to being called Chi Rika, though you wonder how Anh Tiko was able to put up with you.

Relationship: Anh Tiko at 0:
As you grew older, you relied less on Anh Tiko and it seemed that you were a far more independent person than many other Little Ones your age. It's not that Anh Tiko wouldn't lend you a hand, he definitely would because you're his Em, but you weren't quite as attached to him before when you used to follow him around as that annoying kid sister.

For the next five years, your schooling would take place less in the schoolhouse and more around the village, helping the Grown-Ups with their labors. You would cut firewood, make charcoal, repair doors, and generally just shadowing Grown-Ups and Elders to understand how the village worked.

You and Kari used to be inseparable when the two of you were smaller, always doing the same thing together. But as you grew older, your interests diverged and the two of you preferred different labors. There was no real strain to the relationship and the two of you still very much see each other as sisters. Unfortunately, the two of you found different callings. The worst you get from her is the sisterly rivalry about who gets to be the older sister.

You and Kari used to look almost identical, sometimes using it to play some mischief on others. But since your personalities have grown and differentiated, the two of you were also conscious about standing out from each other. You generally dressed...
>Casually, you like to put on aprons instead of your skirt because they're so easy to put on! Look at my cute apron!
>Properly, like Baba and Pappy! It's the clothes they made for me and the clothes I love. Pappy thinks I look pretty!
>Elegantly, with ribbons and bells everywhere. The best way to share Memories is to show my Memories. Also because it makes me look cute and pretty.
>Boyishly, shorts are so much nicer than skirts! I don't care about being cute or pretty!
>Edgy, grown-ups just don't understand me! I don't want to be cute or pretty!

Little Ones as old as you don't "play" as much anymore, and have gotten more refined hobbies or games to participate in. What you liked doing was...
>You read a book called "Demon Swarm", a fantasy story about the Demon Bugs invading the Lingdom. It led you down a rabbit hole of interests and you found yourself crafting armor and fake weapons to LARP in the woods with your friends, making up stories and personas. You do this in secret because the elders did not approve of this fake violence.
>You're hooked onto a series called "My Hand is for the Boy I Love!!", a collection of one-page stories about an unnamed heroine who begins every story with the titular quote. Each story goes through her meeting dreamy boys who are too good to be true, ending in him reaching his hand out to the unnamed heroine. You have written a few stories yourself and passed them among your friends.
>Playing a good game of Hoop Ball, every village has a court! You and your friends like to challenge the kids of the neighboring villages, sometimes mixing up teams just to switch things up a bit. Sometimes you even challenged Youthies staying as guests.
>Performing Memories for Little Ones, especially your Ems! A troupe of traveling performers, the Joybells, once visited your village performing puppet shows and now you just want to share Memories like them! Instead of puppets, you make your own sets and costumes to perform in person with your friends, sometimes even writing your own songs to play.

One day, Kari showed you a piece of paper with a story. It was one story of "My Hand is for the Boy I Love!!" and you were instantly hooked. Will that dreamy guy hold her hand??? You asked for the next page so Kari gave you another. "My Hand is for the Boy I Love!!" again! But there was another dreamy guy, where did they all come from!? Every time a Youthie girl showed up to the village you always asked if she had another page of the story. Usually, they would just give one to you, but sometimes you had to trade. Eventually, all of the pages in the village were too old to be traded. So you decided to write your own.

This dive into MHIFTBIL changed you a bit. You used to love climbing trees and singing in the fields while toiling away on the earth. If you ever wanted to land yourself a dreamy guy, then you need to dress the part! You started dressing more elegantly, acting far more refined than what was expected of you. Bibaba and Popappy liked it because they hoped it would help you find a husband in the future.

Kari on the other hand went a different direction. Sure she was the one who showed you your first page, but she only read them casually. She preferred "Demon Swarm", a book that boys usually liked instead. While you stayed at home to write your own pages, Kari went off to the woods to swing sticks at other boys! She began acting strange, making up stories about how her Mama and Papa were killed by the demons so she's out to eradicate them from the world... even though you just saw your Auntie and Uncle a moment ago. But those are just her PHYSICAL PARENTS! Secretly, she's a goddess trapped in the body of a mortal, placed in there by her real parents to save her from the Demons before they died!

Every week or two, "lady giants" would visit your village to collect food and supplies your elders gathered at the Amber Shrine in exchange for coins. These coins were to be spent for Little Ones at the Salmon Welcoming Festival, though if you were well-behaved enough you might be given some to spend at your discretion, just as you were given one for putting on your skirt and Bubu's pants when you were five years old.

Though some of (you) may be wondering who these giants are, you already know who they were.

They are Tallies because they're so tall, almost a foot taller than Us! Most have ears like Ours, whom We call Halfies, but some have small and narrow ears. Those with ears like Ours are Our family in blood, but those with small ears can still be Our family in Memory. Most Tallies came from the Land Above, some from across the Wide Waters.

We call these tall ladies "Fairies" because they are the helpers of the Great Mother Fairy, who watches over Us and keeps Us warm from the Eversnow Tree. The Great Mother Fairy is Our guest here in the Lingdom, but She is Our host in the seasons and the Emperor's mama. The Emperor is also a Tallie, and He is Our guest in the Lingdom, but Our host among the world.

The Tallies are a powerful folk who have the power to bully Us or protect Us. We are blessed to have the Emperor who promised to shield Us from the Meanies from the rest of the world. Those of Us who have the blood of Tallies must help Him protect Us for the sake of Our Memories.

Halfies were not that strange to you, but they are a relatively uncommon sight, your village only has one family of Halfies, or at least it did until not too long ago. Anh Tiko said Halfies don't get tall until they're around 18 or 20 when they will grow a whole foot within a year or two, so you might not know if some of your peers are Halfies. When a Halfie turns 60 they start shrinking back to normal size and they are allowed to permanently return home. According to the Elders, your village only has one Halfie now; Bubu.

Bubu lived with his Baba and Pappy at the village graveyard. They are Gravies, essentially the village's grave keepers and funerary priests, and are considered the hosts of ghosts of people and animals alike. Despite their importance to society, Gravies live relatively secluded lives, their houses built at the graveyard and far away from the rest of the village. Their association with death makes others feel too awkward to interact with them, some Little Ones are too frightened to even look at them. Despite this distancing, Gravies are not outcasts and are regularly given gifts for hosting ghosts. It's just that their homes are very macabre so people don't really like to visit though they do occasionally come out to the village to interact with other villagers, usually older folk who are more compassionate.

Bubu wasn't even his real name, it was actually Vuboi but he had trouble saying it for the longest time. He still responds to it though. He lived relatively far from the rest of the village and didn't have anybody his age to play with as all his sisters were considerably older. When he was 5 they had all already become Fairies as was their Mama. Bubu's Papa supposedly passed not long after he was born in a far-off land. This arrangement was still strange as even Gravies had large families. Living alone with his elderly Baba and Pappy, Bubu had to learn to take care of them all by himself while growing up.

Every Baba and Pappy in the village felt sorry for Bubu so they always encouraged their Little Ones to go visit Bubu. But all were deterred from visiting their macabre house. It didn't help that Bubu was just a strange boy, who was often stuck in his own thoughts and hilariously awkward to talk to. When you were smaller, your Baba and Pappy always invited Bubu to sleep over when he was visiting to play. In fact, you often sometimes return home from playing or laboring just to find Bubu's hammock already set up. Unfortunately for the past few years, he has been politely declining invitations, electing to stay home to keep his Baba and Pappy from becoming too lonely. Your Baba and Pappy always praised how hardworking he was.
>>
Relationship: Bubu at 2:
Every other kid thought Bubu was strange, even you and Kari did. But it never bothered the two of you, though sleeping over at his house might have been too creepy for either of you. The Grown-Ups of the village notice how it's usually either you or Kari delivering gifts to Bubu's house, and it's become sort of a tradition where you sometimes even picnic at the graveyard with his Baba and Pappy.

Bubu's Mama and sisters sometimes visited with the Fairies, usually bringing generous gifts. You quickly found out that Bubu's family had a lot of coins, all his sisters were just giving him their salary to have fun at the Hammock every year.

One day, one of Bubu's sisters ran into you while you were delivering gifts to Bubu's house. You chatted a bit and after an "Ara ara", she asked you why was it always you who was delivering gifts to her brother.
>"Because he's my friend!"
>"Because nobody else is going to do it!"
>"Because he's so useless, he still can't cook for his Baba and Pappy, he always burns the food!"
>"Because he's a dummy who never looks my way, always staring at random things looking like an idiot!"
>"Because Baba and Pappy make me."

And while we're at it, when you write your pages of MHIFTBIL, how do you usually describe the Dreamy Guy?
>Funny and reliable, he makes me smile and feel whole and complete just by being there with me.
>Dark and mysterious, he lives secluded from nearly everybody because nobody understands him.
>Kind and hardworking, he is a bit of a tease because he's busy taking care of his Baba and Pappy.
>Aloof and uninterested, he has too many things on his mind to look your way.
>An Imperial Prince who has no business with someone like me but can't let go of me.

Bubu was your friend and always will be! He needed help taking care of his Baba and Pappy, and that's why you always came to help him. His Baba would invite you to help her cook, learning Gravie recipes such as fried grub. His Baba and Pappy always looked so sad when you had to go, more so than Bubu himself.

You found the idea of an Imperial Prince falling in love with a humble person like you romantic. The Imperial family were known to travel throughout the land in your youth, though to your knowledge none have ever married your kind, restricting themselves to Tallies. But hey, Prince Tavoi, grandson of the current Emperor, is around your age, so maybe you might run into him during his Youthful Journey!

Bubu's sisters and Mama were Fairies, but that is not the fate of men. They are to become Bravies, servants of the Emperor who protect by ensuring no Meanies invade. You're probably worried about Bubu since he's not someone you ever imagined to hold a sword right. Even worse, Bubu's Baba and Pappy would be awfully lonely without him, and his Mama heartbroken to lose him as she did his Papa.

***

I will be taking a break this weekend to get the quest ready for the next step; when Rika embarks on her Youthful Journey throughout the Lingdom. Hope you guys enjoyed it and the setting so far.

You are now 15 years old and it is time you embark on your Youthful Journey. You are considered a Grown-Up, albeit a young one, you will probably grow no taller than you are now and you have learned all the vital Memories one must know to be productive members of society.

It has always been Our custom to travel among the Earth and Trees and move between different bands to reconnect with the rest of Our family. Ever since We began to host the maize and rice, We were forced to no longer travel across the land. But it is still important for Us to fulfill Our promises of visiting Our relatives.

When you visit Our relatives you will become their guest. To be good a guest you must offer them your labor, comb their Earth and trim their Trees, and share Memories. Do not overstay your welcome as you have many relatives to visit. You may find that one family is more to your liking that you would very much prefer to stay forever. Keep those families in mind for when you decide to have babies of your own.

Anh Tiko did not return home this last winter. He and his fiance are preparing to be wedded, inviting both their families to the village of his fiance within the season. You plan on visiting him during his wedding, so be sure to have a gift ready for his bride.

You decided that your Youthful Journey will be in a small group with your closest friends; Kari and Bubu. Bubu was reluctant to go as he did not want to leave his Baba and Pappy alone, so they kicked him out to force him to travel. The elders already arranged for older Little Ones to sleep over every night, rotating on a nightly basis to make sure Bubu's Baba and Pappy wouldn't get too cold or lonely.

In your hammock, you packed your personal belongings as well as a finely crafted wooden box where you would keep all the Memories you will make. Baba packed a bento of tortilla and shrimp for both you and Kari to keep you guys fed during your initial travel. Bubu packed some dried worms his Baba made for him.

Music would be fun to make while you walk between village and village. What did you learn to play growing up?

You, Kari, and Bubu walked through the woods playing your favorite songs together. You strummed your lyre while Kari played her flute. Bubu never learned how to play anything, a strange and rare circumstance, so he just sang and clapped his hands. You remembered how Bubu always had trouble with the lyrics, and once again you're just listening to him singing gibberish most of the time, though matching the rhythm. Kari once complained about it, so Bubu started singing rhymes you've all learned when you were tiny Little Ones, which weren't anything exciting anymore. So you decided to teach Bubu the lyrics of your favorite song.

You taught Bubu a song about...
>Climbing trees and diving into waters.
>Making yummy jam-filled dumplings.
>Sleeping in your hammock hoping nobody would notice.
>Holding hands with a boy you like.
>Hoping an Imperial Prince would notice you (written by you)

While teaching Bubu the lyrics of a song, Kari stops in her tracks to grasp her left arm and scream in pain.

"My cursed arm feels the presence of nearby wickedness! We must flee now!"

She runs off, leaving you and Bubu behind. You're not worried about what's happening as Kari gets into these weird delusions now and then, but getting separated is something to be concerned about. Bubu just stares down the path with a blank expression, confused at what's going on.

You decided to...

Bubu would get ostracized if he sings a girl's song, and we should make sure Kari doesn't get lost. On a tangent, it'd be a sad bit of irony if Rika gets Baldwin IV'd when she finally meets a prince. It'd make for an interesting story though, maybe she'd even build herself a mask.

It was a good thing Bubu loved jam-filled dumplings ever since you shared some with him during your first Salmon Welcoming Festival. The lyrics were easy for him to learn since he loved them so much, and there were hand motion diddies corresponding to the recipe. You strummed your lyre while Bubu pretended to be making dumplings, and then Kari got into one of her delusional fits before running off.

You grabbed Bubu by the wrist and chased Kari, your hammock packs bouncing side by side forcing you to let go of his hand. When you finally caught up with Kari, she was confronted by four other Youthies dressed in a strange and unconventional manner. They weren't even casual much like the many apron-wearing friends you know from back home, but were wearing bandages over their limbs. Some of them also covered themselves with buckles. Their leader speaks out:

"I thought Turtle Scarf Alone worked... Alone! No matter, there's still more of us than you!"

It really was nothing to be scared of, Kari had always been getting into these sorts of encounters. Even some of your friends back home would act like this and you indulged in them now and then. Bubu looked confused as usual.

"N-no, stay back, Rika!" said Kari. "They're too dangerous! Go, take Bubu and run!"

You decided to...

You and Kari beat the other Youthies away, though there were some hiccups whenever somebody did an illegal move, or a helmet fell off so everybody had to stop swinging their sticks before somebody actually got hurt. Bubu wanted to participate but he never learned how to pay, so he started singing whatever he learned from the Dumpling song to lend you his strength.

The defeated Youthies grovel at your feet and their ringleader offers an amber pendant carved into the likeness of a turtle.

"We are at your mercy, Turtle Scarf Alone! Please, take this and spare our lives!"

When the Meanies first discovered Our home, the Big Meanie kidnapped Us and took Us far from Our families. Big Ura came and defeated the Big Meanie, and his friend became the Emperor. The Emperor let Us go back home and swore to protect Us forever so long as We gift him amber. That is why we adorn our shrines and clothes with amber.

You've heard rumors of Youthies wagering their Memories after losing a bout, but you weren't sure if this trinket was crafted by the loser themself. It was a very cute pendant though, and maybe you deserved it for helping out Kari!

You...

>Reject it, Memories shouldn't be given away so easily!
>>>And threaten to tell on their elders if they don't stop wagering their Memories.

So I accidentally forgot the slash after 5 Toughness, so I'll just reiterate the two choices.

You pick up a stick and unleash your dark past as... (Choosing LARP name)
>Forgotten Princess Ruka
>Hermit Scholar Huntress
>Turtle Darling
>Write-In

You... (reward for winning)
>Accept it, it's a cute pendant!
>Ask for something else less sacred, like snacks.
>Reject it, Memories shouldn't be given away so easily!
>>>And threaten to tell on their elders if they don't stop wagering their Memories.
>>>Don't threaten to tell on their elders.

When rejecting it, also vote for the follow up as was the role choice.

If Rika has to give an in-character reason why, she could say it's because her character knows what it's like to have Memories taken away, hence the "Forgotten" in Forgotten Princess Ruka.

You are Forgotten Princess Ruka, the unknown princess of a faraway land! Even worse, Ruka had her Memories of being a princess taken away! When you first made this persona, your peers thought it was cool but were confused about how anybody would know you were a forgotten princess, and who was there who knew to explain it to them? Irrelevant details!

You were at first tempted to take your opponent's amber turtle pendant, it was cute after all. But as you reached for it, you were struck with a sharp pain in your mind. Augh! Was this how you lost your Memories? By giving them away so easily like this? Or perhaps somebody took it from you!? You rejected the pendant and told your opponents to hold them dear, otherwise you'd forget who you are!

Your opponents cry after this realization, except for one who is just staring at you in awe for some wondrous plot development. As crying is contagious, you and Kari break down crying.

Gravies wear veils because dealing with corpses is a sad affair. They can't help but cry sometimes, especially when they're new to it. So they wear veils to mask their tears to not spread crying among their community, which can halt a day's worth of labor.

You always knew Bubu was strange because he never cried with others unless it directly affected him. As far as he was concerned, he was just watching a show without any context, confusing him.

You and your opponents sit down to eat whatever snacks they had, dropping personas. Like you, these Youthies just started their Youthful Journey. They come from a nearby village and you might recall playing with them during the many field trips that Little Ones go on.

You are Forgotten Princess Ruka, not some commoner who squats down to eat! You eat properly, on your knees at a table. There are no tables, so the least you could do is squat! Besides, this commoner food is meant to be eaten with one's hands anyway.

When it was time to part ways, the Youthies gave a buckle to you and your group as a Memory token.
Relationship: Buckle Gang +1

What Memory do you give to your new friends?

>You always knew Bubu was strange because he never cried with others unless it directly affected him. As far as he was concerned, he was just watching a show without any context, confusing him.
This is probably because he comes from a family of Gravies. He's around death all the time, and likely learned to handle the gravity of it without crying, yet holding due respect for the dead all the same. It's comforting to know he has empathy, otherwise he wouldn't have cared to notice.

>A piece of cloth you embroidered yourself (with swimming turtles)
It's something to keep Kari busy while biding time, and appears to fit her supportive character better. Learning to embroider and work with textiles can also easily translate to creating bandages or finding multiple uses for string and fabrics, valuable skills to have in the wilderness.

Sorry for late reply, I was predisposed this morning. As you folks can tell, I am running on a 48 hour cycle, excluding weekends.

You gave the Buckle Gang one of your cloths you embroidered yourself, a very common gift, but personal nonetheless. You part ways with the Buckle Gang, satisfied with earning your first Memory of your journey.

You arrive at the next village by sunset, called "Three-Clawed Grove" due to the clawed-shaped leaves of their oak trees. If they were doing anything in the day, they have completed it and its residents have returned to their households. You make your way to the village center, and like yours, it has a small grove of oak trees, an amber shrine to store goodies for Fairies, and a bell arc to summon all villagers.

Like amber, bells are sacred objects but are associated with community instead of protection. The ringing of a bell reminds Us of having a large family, wherever We are in the village, We can hear the ringing of the bell. Even every household has its own little bell, rung to summon the family for meals. Tiny Little Ones are adorned with bells so that they can easily be located and kept safe.

Neither you nor Kari have relatives here, but you could always trust the village Gravie family to be familiar with Bubu to an extent. He seems drawn to be hosted by them, perhaps because it's a familiar environment, though it could be a little bit spooky to sleep at the graveyard. However, every household is always willing to host Youthies. Whatever labor you owe to this village will have to wait until the next day anyway.

Where will you stay for the night?
>At the Gravie House because Bubu is most comfortable around spooky things.
>At a random household, they might ask you to help cook.
>Hang up your hammocks at the grove, it's a nice night and you might be able to collect some acorns to mash.

If Bubu's fine with these folks, they could probably be trusted to do their job well enough to avoid pissing off the dead. Unless there's the body of some serial murderer or equivalent in the graveyard, there isn't anything to be scared of.

You decided to stay with the village gravies, located at the outskirts of the village. You walked though the treeline that separated the village from its graveyard, fairies (the firefly kind) greeted you in the woods. At the clearing you spotted the Gravie House on the other side of a field of gravemarkers, and spotted many ghostly balls in the distance, appearing out of nowhere and then disappearing after a few seconds.

During this movement, Kari was visibly spooked so she held hands with Bubu the whole way who was seemingly unphased, sometimes pointing at the ghosts with a smile and a "look!"

You were...
>Brave and held Kari's other hand to make her feel safe.
>Spooked so you held hands with Bubu too.
>Jealous so you hugged Bubu's free arm.
>Intrigued and watched the ghosts with Bubu.
