Fifteen years ago, the two columns emerged from the frozen northern wastes and descended into the arctic circle. Now, two great cities slowly emerge, one populated by dwarves, the other by Oceloti. The people of the two realms toil beneath the bleak arctic sun, huddle around the fires as the cold wind whips the hardy plantlife around them and roast fatty bug meat on sticks over the crackling flames. Rangers and soldiers patrol the uninhabited wastes, fighting with overgrown insectoids, masons chisel stone slabs, carpenters carve wooden beams the king and thane chose the fate of their people.

>Forbath Coaljaw
Whilst a road all the way to Floodcave had been considerable overreach on his part, Forbath starts a more modest project to build a road from the city to Wetdowns.

>Gerna Smeltaxe
Fire and the light it produces are revered by Brazenbeard Dwarfs as a small aspect of their faith in the heat at the heart of the world. As Forge-Mother, High-priestly responsibilities as well as those of a master smith fall to Gerna Smeltaxe; and so it is to Gerna that the project of establishing tallowmakers, chandlers and lamp-makers is passed, so that a thousand tiny flames might bring the world more brightness and wisdom.

>Snorri Ironeye
Did anyone with alchemical knowledge make it out of our former home, or have any Dwarfs taken to practice and experimentation since we made our new one? Snorri will do his part to organise the remaining keepers of this knowledge into a regulated society to share knowledge and formulae to keep the practice alive.
>>
>>5955046
Forbath, while still not managing to clear a road to Wetdowns, manages to clear it to roughly the site of the potential onyx mine and some way southwards. The road consists of a broad path, going between a meter to two meters in width, with logs, branches and trees laid and gravel, sand and stones placed over it, creating a pretty dry and erosion resistant pathway for people to walk over. With the current rate, it will take a year more to finish the project.
Gerna is given a interesting task she ends up struggling a lot with, before eventually, with the help of butchers and such, realizing how to extract fat and tallow from the various wildlife, rather than the small amount of animals that survived the journey. The interesting side-effect if the strange, somewhat too-sweet scent of candles, yet it is definitively not something that anyone complains about when compared to the benefit of the candle-light.
Snorri will do a extremely good job at finding and organizing anyone with abstract knowledge not directly applicable or transferable to other dwarves and will organize a massive tablet-library, where a lot of the old dwarven knowledge will be held, ranging from ancient dwarven history, customs, knowledge of the past, the half remembered maps, a very impressive quantity of knowledge will be stored as a bit of a fever to write down everything catches the dwarves. In the end, the Brick-library, as it is named, will be the most impressive property the dwarfkind has made so far.
A interesting development occurs as the lakeside dwarves, the ones that had recently disbanded their militia are yet again re-arming themselves and organizing major hunts for the wildlife.

>Teokuitlatiiluitl
The king shifts his efforts to focus on the planning and construction of the city, hoping that there is enough stone being mined to fuel it's construction for the moment. Focus on foundations, roads and waterways first, then move on to public buildings and offices if appropriate.
>Eztli
The noble is encouraged to continues his efforts to erect the city proper, supporting the king in his efforts.
>Itzcali
The knight is instructed to assist in the construction of the city, focusing on helping to organise the labour needed to flatten the terrain, dig waterways, cut & chisel stone and set it in place. Hopefully with all efforts focused on their new home, enough foundations will be laid to render future work easier.
>>
>>5955258
The king and Eztli, despite their valiant efforts, don't make too much progress, in part due to a lack of enthusiasm with the way-too small of a populace to need this and in part due to a simple lack of people who would inhabit the city. In the end however, a series of long, straight roads are planned and created, at least within the planned future bounds of the city and some waterways are excavated and plated in stones, while plots and foundations are planned out for some point in the future, with only the innermost city centre around the future pyramid being built.
Itzcali ended up both census-ing the populace and bringing both huge numbers of rural farmers and rural slaves (to avoid disrupting the farmers as much as possible) to work on the project, primarily in preparing the terrain and the resources. His data, while undoubtedly inaccurate, puts the Oceloti population at some twelve thousand, with a total number of seventeen hundred living within walking distance of the capital and another six hundred working with the mines. The number of slaves has so far risen to some three hundred.
In the meanwhile, the news that the female slaves would be working in the city somehow found its way to the male slaves working the mines and led to a riot that further slowed down the construction as a contingent of soldiers had to be sent to quell the rioting slaves.
In the meanwhile, Itzcali also focused on stockpiling the food needed to feed the workers and ended up over-stockpiling, creating a considerable stash of food.

>Forbath Coaljaw
It's time to start planning. Whilst building a new hold into the great mount will be the work of generations, we can at least start preparing. With some area surveys already commissioned and maps available, Forbath brings together planners, miners, architects and stonemasons to begin designing concepts and design-plans for how the hold might eventually look. Special consideration is given to the design architecture and statuary ornamentation of the planned grand entrance hall, as the initial excavations for this are likely to be the first mined through and we don't want to inadvertently reduce to rubble any parts that Dwarfs in two-hundred years might have needed to still be standing. There is no rush, Forbath reminds them all; they will have much time to examine and re-evaluate over the coming decades - it is more important that the work is done well then that it happens quickly.

>Gerna Smeltaxe
With the route to the Onyx mine prepared and under construction, Gerna leads a group to the prospective mine-site. Stone transmuted by the heat of the world, and made beautiful - symbolically important as well as structurally sound. Gerna begins the efforts to establish the mine, figuring that early and precursory excavations to clear the main site won't produce much usable Onyx, but would provide material to use to build the site-road.

>Snorri Ironeye
With knowledge accumulating, perhaps we can start to spread it around. Snorri works to implement a schooling system so that those who wish to learn can improve themselves.
>>
>>5957883
Forbath's group of craftsmen will do a good job planning out a initial design. First rough sketches are made, then surveys, plans, tests, redraws and such, in a endless cycle of bouncing ideas off eachother. By the end, a grand plan accounting for locally available resources is made for a ten meter tall gothic arch being the entrance for the mesa, extending forwards for dozens of meters while branching off into countless smaller passageways, sectors and subsectors, with the plans for clay brick lined walls and pillars, with statues made from both imported stone and wood if the needs arise, with the great central chamber some thirty by thirty meters, with a series of overlooking balconies. By the end of the year, some small probing tunnels were dug to affirm the possibility of this. All that awaited was either confirmation or the request to re-plan the city, both relying of Forbath.
Gerna's expedition proves very useful, as not only are initial digs providing useful stone, but the gemstones themselves, pushed closer to the surface by the weird machinations of earth itself, are being dug out in great quantities. Had they still shared a world with other dwarves, this find would have made them rich. Now however, it will probably be relegated to jewelry and eyes for the statues that will line the halls of the dwarven hold.
In addition to this, due to the shape of the mine and the difficulty of putting the entire crew Gerna had brought, she had also put some dwarves to work on construction, establishing a fortified town, much as had been done with Floodcave. The initial name given was Redstone, after the initial batch of onyx found.
Snorri will, like both his companions, prove a very useful man, establishing schools for the various young dwarves so that they may be schooled in the knowledge of their forefathers. While initially promising, the lack of wealth and funding in general, alongside the long lives of the dwarves and their familial bonds will reduce the circle of schooled children to those living with wealthy families in and around the capital itself.
In the meanwhile, the last remainder of the food supply will be found missing. Whether this is due to some animals eating it, it being given off, sold or simply getting lost, is up for anyone to guess.
And while initially questioning of the intelligence of the wildlife, some of the dwarven farmers will have, after a decade and a half, taken to using some of the insectoid wildlife as farm animals, with a species of large rat sized insects, somewhat reminiscent of termites, to protect their fields, as the animals, already instinctually used to protecting a certain crop they grow in their underground farms, tend to the crops dwarves plant and smear the pheromones' extracted from a certain sub-type of insectoid.

>Teokuitlatiiluitl
With sufficient foundations established for the moment, the king is to construct the two schools of the city, the noble and common schools. Now that his people were more settles, reinstituting education was no longer something that could be put off.
>Eztli
The noble was instructed to try his hand at domesticating some of the creatures native to the surrounding land for food. The Oceloti never particularly relied on domestication, but to ensure a stable food supply, diversification would be essential, and any obvious avenues would have to be explored.
>Itzcali
The knight was sent out to survey the land for metal deposits. If they found any, cooper could be used to make bronze, which would make for good tools and weapons, though nothing as deadly as obsidian. Regardless, it was worth seeing what else was hiding under their feet. Even if it is just gold and silver, which were too soft to be of use, it could be used to revive the arts in the city. Or perhaps they find metals they have never seen before?
>>
>>5958582
Teokuitlatiiluitl will do a truly exceptional job of organizing and networking with the inteligencia, the schools will be constructed, servants will be assigned and following a quick and well organized construction process, the youths will be enrolled within schools. After a initial period of struggling, the system will resume its operations after a decade and a half long break, with classes held by a dynamic mixture of the old and young professors, ones experienced in teaching and the others desiring to prove themselves and willing to work hard to bridge the gap between the lessons of the previous world and this one. In addition to the classes, more physical lectures will be held, sports, exercises, communal work projects... all leading to a very good educative system.
And in addition to that, the intellectual elite Teokuitlatiiluitl had established connections with will prove very useful to him, as he will now have a network of intelligent and experienced people to call upon, should the need arise.
Eztli will, while initially struggling, find some promising targets. In particular, a species of gigantic herbivorous sea spiders that he will cage in large floating nets, letting the spiders feed on algae while not being able to escape. While not an easy adjustment to the Oceloti, the initially low prices and the ability to simply force the slaves to survive on the insectoids will introduce the food to the populace and eventually, the slow-cooked, then fried spider legs will prove themselves as a snack.
Itzcali will, while not being especially successful, still manage to find some stuff, primarily, two major sources of low quality coal and a source of ruby-sulphur further uphill from the obsidian mine.
And in the meanwhile, the smokehouse caught fire. While the flame was put out, a number of people died due to being unable to escape from the burning building. The locals and especially the firefighters report horrible pained screams coming from inside the building as it was burning. Whoever was inside met a grizzly end.
>Or perhaps they find metals they have never seen before?
Don't worry, things will start getting weird soon enough.

With a plan in hand and test-tunnels dug, the word is given. We strike the stone, and by our own hands we carve ourself deeper into our new home.

>Gerna Smeltaxe
That only those wealthy and close to the capitol are reaping the benefits of the new education system does not sit right with Gerna. But due to the nature of Dwarves themselves, near every village will have at least one who knows the arts of smithing, and many will also a priest - and oft these will be the same individual! Working through her network, the Forge-Mother attempts to arrange to provide these poor and rural Dwarfs with at least the basis of an education as part of her religious duty.

An almost perfect roll if I've ever seen one.
Forbath's construction will go quickly, the dwarves driven to an almost fanatic level of enthusiasm for the construction project. The dwarves eagerly work long hours, volunteers show up in droves, even women join in pushing carts filled with dugout stone, while children rush back and forth carrying food and water for the tiring miners. By the end of the year, a series of intersecting tunnels are dug deep into the maesa and the populace is enthusiastic about further work. In addition to that, huge quantities of stone are dug out, leading to a bit of a boom in stone construction outside of the dwarven hold, as farmer communities living further out send men and women with carts filled with food only to return with them filled with stone.
While the hold is far from done, this year was extremely productive and Forbath can proudly look at his work and claim that his few thousand part time workers have accomplished what some dwarven holds struggled to do in years.
Gerna will achieve much with her efforts, having a network of her priests deliver collections of clay tablets with instructions regarding education, ranging from topics to teach, to the ways to motivate kids, to songs, oral traditions, writing manuals and skills to be taught. While initially resentful of the loss of working hands, the rural dwarves eventually do accept the need for their children to be educated and most farmer communities end up building designated school buildings.

Snorri does a very good job. While initial discreet questioning provides nothing and repeated failures with stricter food storage criteria all tend to fail, eventually Snorri decides to set a bait and personally observe from a hay stack with a guard next to him. At about a hour past midnight the dwarf next to Snorri wakes him as footsteps are heard from the outside. The dwarf outside leans against the boards, causing them to gently creek and then vomits against the wall before walking off. Snorri decides to replace the dwarf as the sentry, only to eventually notice that a swarm of snake-like maggots is crawling underneath the floorboards from the direction where the dwarf vomited. Shaking the dwarf next to him awake, the two of them rush outside to try and catch the dwarf, only to find him long gone. Returning to the storage area, Snorri notices the maggots eating the grain with surprising speed.
Sweating nervously, he decides to bring a torch closer to the maggots in the fear that he may have tried to farm these maggots and feed them to dwarves, only to breathe a sigh of relief as he notices they are not the same type.
In the meanwhile, Hostaem has made some very welcome investments into the Onyx mines, both greatly expanding them and personally enriching himself. It seems that even in this world, the Goldseeds will be rich.
The lakeside militia seems to have somewhat calmed down, as they slowly enrich themselves with their agricultural work, amassing wealth and property and slowly forsaking their initial militant ways.
And finally, the rich dwarves, Hostaem and Greybrew amongst them, seem to be heavily investing in fortifications, both the general watchtowers, but also the ranger forts and the various watchtowers dotted around the still unfinished dwarven Mesa hold.

>>
>>5961972
Teokuitlatiiluitl's work don't bring much success, as he simply fails to motivate people to follow his orders with any effort. The grand construction projects are unpopular, the Oceloti don't want to work on such great projects and more worryingly, Eztli seems to completely lack any authority and his simple construction project completely fails and erupts into riots in large part due to widespread unrest stemming from dissatisfaction against the king and his councilors, which have grown unpopular and disliked. The kings confidence is pretty shaken when a he is cornered by a armed mob that seems intent on killing him, but satisfies themselves by simply taunting him and stripping him of his jewels and royal regalia before letting him go. Eztli however, is not as lucky as the crowd beats him bloody.
Itzcali however, manages to explore far to the east, scouting the lands and managing to find a platinum source on the ridgeline between the northern and southern swamp (yes, the one seen on the dwarven map) and little else, yet he deems it too far away for exploitation in the near future and states as much to Teokuitlatiiuitl when he returns.
In the meanwhile, perhaps as a way to extend their time at sea and spend as little time in the unruly city, some of the Oceloti have been practicing extended seafaring and have managed to make better boats that allow them to sail further and faster. While not great, they are the best in the world and a major step up from the previous rafts.
And finally, somewhat instinctively, Teokuitlatiiluitl had, after his unfortunate experiences with the mobs, ordered all the fortifications around his realm upgraded, in case he required a place to flee to.

>Forbath Coaljaw
With construction of the hold getting off to a splendid start, Forbath continues his work in planning and organising activities as the Dwarves excavate further, including what is hoped to be the first habitation area on his grand plan - whilst the Faith in the heat at the heart of the world makes no compulsion, there are still many Dwarfs among the Brazenbeard for whom the thought of giving birth to the next generation beneath a ceiling of stone seems far more natural and traditional.

>Gerna Smeltaxe
The fortified town tentatively known as 'Redstone' lies close to the river, and a Dwarf road already connects this town to the city; so Gerna decides that this town is the best location to build a grand and solid Dwarven bridge across the river. Between the excavations of the Hold into the Mesa and the local Onyx mine, there's lots of stone upon the market right now.

>Snorri Ironeye
The Maggots, the vomit. Just what the heck is going on there? As the one who saw the matter first-hand, Snorri still finds himself haunted; and uses his knowledge and expertise as a Lawspeaker to put together a justified investigation using the resources of the state to try and find what's going on here and capture those responsible. Is there some local parasitic breed that we need to take measures against? Or is something even more unsettling going on here?
>>
>>5964854
>6, 3, 1
Forbath's efforts come to an abrupt end when inspecting a problem area with a small crew of engineers during a rainstorm. Unfortunately for him, the dwarves had not properly reinforced the mineshaft, as the log was later found out to be partially rotten. The first sign something was wrong was a sharp crack. Then, as everyone started to run outside, the ceiling buckled and a flood of mud, sand, water and rocks came crashing down. Forbath, alongside some of the engineers and miners survived, but Forbath unfortunately lost a foot when a massive boulder came down on it and a miner amputated it before carrying the unconscious king out on his back.
The Redstone bridge construction goes on well and is done before the year is over, as the river is redirected, solid foundations are made and a large stone bridge is erected over the river. Very soon, the city attracts a ranger station aswell, as it has become one of the rare places where heavy equipment can be brought over the river and the city ends up thriving quite quickly.
While initially ridiculed for his claims of a dwarf vomiting maggots, a armed ambush surrounding the warehouse after a new store of grain was brought in managed to spot a dwarf. After a few moments of confusion and disgust, a dwarven militiaman stepped forwards out of the hay and yelled at the vomiting dwarf, who, after wiping the spittle and vomit from his face blankly stared at the militiaman. A few moments of awkward silence later, the militiaman strode towards the dwarf, only to get punched in the face, his nose cracking under the impact. Before the militiaman's limp body even hit the floor, the dwarves sprang out of their hiding holes, with a ranger firing a bolt at the maggot vomiting dwarf, shooting him in his thigh.
"Get him!" Snorri yelled.
The half a dozen dwarves thrust their spears at the maggot infested dwarf that uncaringly took the thrusts into his body before replying with powerful blows that sundered shields, broke spearshafts and cracked bones, until the blows of the ambushers and the locals who grabbed weapons and came to join the fight eventually brought him down.
The investigation about the dwarf brought nothing as noone recognized the dwarf, however, the dissection, originally planned to be carried out by a physician was interrupted by Snorri, who ordered the body burned, which turned out to be the correct choice, as the dead body, after being tossed onto flames erupted in a explosion of maggots. Luckily for the dwarves, the flames consumed the maggots quickly.
Snorri's efforts as well as Gerna's approval very quickly established a environment of cooperation amidst the dwarves, as the guard filled with recruits and the civilians very quickly adopted a mentality of supporting them, both in physical acts and when it comes to information.

>Teokuitlatiiluitl
The king will focus re-invigorating the legal system, by reinstituting the various civil and criminal courts of their old city, and hopefully re-establishing order in the city. The Oceloti have a thorough legal code, but it's use has been sporadic and enforcement spotty since coming to a new land. With public order eroding recently, the king hopes to restore it and a venerable branch of government in once fell swoop.
>Eztli
The noble will focus on exploring the seas via sailing to explore their surroundings. The Oceloti have neglected scouting their surroundings recently, since previous efforts have not unveiled anything particularly interesting. But perhaps going by sea would help them find something of note? And it would keep Eztli outside the city, hopefully giving tempers time to cool.
>Itzcali
The knight is entrusted to setup new facilities to preserve and store food in. Regardless of how the people feel, the ability to stockpile food is not something that can be given up. Maybe the knight taking control of the project will convince people to finish it.
>>
>>5965816
The kings attempt at re-introducing courts and re-establishing order to the city will bear fruit, as the rioting mobs will disperse after a few sacrifices and executions, yet the unrest will continue, as the civilians, still unhappy with their lot in life will continue displaying their discontent, albeit in a non-violent way.
Eztli will, as instructed, explore the waters with the newly constructed vessels, yet, his explorations, timid in nature as some would describe them, will not reach too far out and will not discover new shorelines. They will however find new fishing spots and will lead to a bit of a boost in sea-food output.
Itzcali will find himself a target of peaceful protest as he angrily yells at commoners to get back to work. In a fit of anger, he strikes a commoner over the head with a stick, only for the father of the young guy to challenge Itzcali to a duel and defeat him in it, delivering Itzcali a vicious stroke to the arm, yet choosing to spare the knight. After this frankly humiliating showcase, the knight refuses to show himself in public for a period of time.
However, despite Itzcali's failiure, the priesthood decides to put their own people to the construction of the massive smokehouse and manage to finish it.
In addition to that, the priests send out their own agents to calm the crowd down, managing to pacify it. While both of these deeds look like acts of good will, Teokuitlatiiuitl knows well they are both demonstrations of power and requests for privileges.

With the bridge complete, Gernal looks into the prospect of the far side and the idea of setting another mine - bridging Tin to the forge will open a multitude of options for our smiths and artificiers.

>Snorri Ironeye
That nobody seemed to recognise the 'infested' Dwarf is troubling in itself, even outside the fact that an infested Dwarf existed. Or was this merely some horrible insectoid assuming Dwarven form? The Lawspeaker investigates the matter further, and attempts to introduce some policies and practices to better secure our towns and hold from the threat of infiltration.
>>

>2, 6, 1
Forbaths effort will do good, as not only will his realm will now be paved with a multitude of roads, they will extend into areas that are sparsely populated, letting people from some overpopulated areas move around. And in addition to that, the roads will be paved in the central areas and widened where needed.
Gerna will assemble a large caravan that will set off across the river, however, on the night of the second day into the march eastwards, while setting their camp in the wilderness, a yell of warning will cause Gerna to throw herself to the floor. A few blade strokes later, two of her close advisors will lay dead next in her tent with a dwarf she never saw before raising his blade to finish her off. Luckily for her, a servant carrying a tray of drinks will tackle the unknown dwarf to the floor, giving Gerna enough time to flee until the stranger finished the servant off. That, however, was not the end of Gerna's troubles, as she roused the camp in the search of the stranger, only for a lookout to yell warnings about a column coming from the north. The dwarves, ever a organized race, quickly formed a two man deep line, ready to meet the strangers in case they turned out to be hostile.
The foreign column turned out to be comprised from dwarf sized clay monsters, roughly hewn in the shape of the dwarf, oftentimes with insectoid features added on top.
To say the skirmish was bloody would be a understatement as neither the crossbow bolts, nor the spears turned out to be of much use and the clay monsters closed the gap quickly, engaging in vicious combat with the dwarves and only being felled by axeblows, but only until the dwarves routed, leaving their wagons behind and fleeing back to Redstone, where the miners quickly armed themselves with axes and cleavers and constructed barricades on the bridge.
Snorri implements a system of passports, mandatory vouching and even considers mandatory tattoos, before dropping the last idea, then orders walled settlements and permanent gate watches. While some call this extensive level of control into question, almost all support it. In addition, Snorri calls a small group of rangers to him, wanting the best as he sets to investigating the settlements for more odd and unknown dwarves. By the end, he finds a dozen more in his scouring.
In the meanwhile, a very large brawl happens when a large number of drunken dwarves set to looking for more "fake" dwarves amongst the populace, only to stumble upon a even more drunk gang of dwarves. Four are left dead.
Floodcave has grown past the initial size and out of its original fortifications, yet the dwarves in it are certain that they don't need to, nor do they really care to follow the latest round of regulations.
And a wave of sickness has seriously struck the dwarven lakeside militia. Their numbers are decimated and almost all of them are bedridden.

Any idea for why? I personally think that the pdf rulebook is what sabotaged it. I might try running it again at some point in the future, however, I'll run a few other things before I give this another shot.

Absolutely. A shame you didn't get to proper blows with the claymen, but you'd have come out on top.

That'd seem a logical guess to me, since NRP's and Builders and the like often run here - the PDF rules (and perceptions of complexity because of them?) seem the notable point of difference.
