    WELCOME, CAPTAIN.

    *99.827 PERCENT CASUALTIES*

    -----------------------

Well, fuck. Looks like we got hit as hard as you thought we did in that last offensive. Emperor-damned nurgle plagues killed the majority of you.

So. You and your crew are some of the very few surviors - you know there are still some ground-pounders running about, but comms are buggered.

Your own tank got knocked out by some lucky lesser daemons, but the plus side is that the plagues left most of the vehicles intact.

There's at least one of every leman russ variant in the field.

You stand on a hill overlooking a valley, containing a ruined city. It is foggy, and a light drizzling of rain comes down upon your cap as you stand there with your 5 crewmembers. Fires burn in this distance, and you can make out an intact-looking Russ (or at least the shape of one) through the haze.

    What do you do?

    Naicsson, Frederick (Loader)
    Freytag, Joeseph (Driver)
    Leister, Hal (Sponson Gunner 1)

The left side of the tank is pretty much a heap of slag. The poor ol' Vengeance of the Emperor ain't gonna be doing much anymore.

The crew gather their backpacks and you head for the leman russ.

All seems clear until you get about 10 meters away - it seems something is moving around the rear of it that you hadn't been able to see.

Well, hello, what do we have here? It's a guardsman who's quite thoroughly freaked the fuck out, as the saying goes. He does have a set of rather nice carapace armor, despite its being covered in blood. Attached to his back is a long-las, but the barrel is heavily bent. He seems unresponsive to words, but a gentle prod from your (de-activated, of course) chainsword seems to make him scoot along. The russ you're standing next to is a vanquisher with heavy bolter sponsons and a heavy flamer on the center mount.

You can make out on the chest of his armor a rank insignia (Corporal) but his name has been scraped off by a series of scuffs.

This is what you can see, now that you and your crew have herded him to the tank.

I don't think a man that fragile at the moment can be trusted with a chainsword.

As your crew enters the tank, all seems well - its crew is missing, but it has a decent amount of ammunition and fuel.

You drag Carapace Boy along with you and start the engine up. Unfortunately, right then's about the time a column of plague zombies showed up.

Suspicious, much? Discreetly have 2 of your men watch him, with orders to dispense the Emperor's Mercy/Justice if needed (remember, you can't relax when dealing with daemons). Check out the tanks exterior. If it seems ok, have 2 men on overwatch, 2 men watching the mute guardsman, and take the last with you to check the interior of the tank, ie you watch from the hatch, Freytag goes in.

Wonder who the hell would take HB sponsons and a heavy flamer on a Vanquisher.

I assume the Russ is facing forward because both sponsons are able to fire? Ready the flamer, and stand in front of the tank with everyone but the sponson gunners (and Freytag to watch Mr. crazy) to lure the zombies closer to the heavy flamer while plinking away with lasguns and the bolt pistol.

Obviously get out of the line of fire of the heavy flamer when the zombies are in range.

But yes, hopefully a demolisher or something may be found.

    -----

The engine finally turns over successfully, and the tank lurches forward, its treads clattering as we plow through the muddy earth, leaving the plague zombies behind.

Go at cruising speed back to our Leman Russ to salvage its alternator. Pick up heavy bolter ammo (assuming it has HB sponsons) and put it in the new tank, then drive off in another direction to try to find another Russ, hopefully an LRBT or Executioner with plasma sponsons, or a Demolisher.

Look for Pask on the way there. He's the only reason to ever take a Vanquisher he's got to be around somewhere.

But then again someone took a heavy flamer and sponsons on this one, so maybe Segmentum had no idea what they were doing when they made this army list. Never mind, don't look for Pask.
