So, VeloCITY. Has anyone run any games of it yet? Are there any online groups looking for players?

    To quote the blurb:
    >"A city of punks versus greys, of neon graffiti and high speed chases through rooftops and alleyways. A world where any surface is a road, and any person could be a high speed hero with the right gear, the right threads, the right tunes and, most importantly, the right soul.
    >"You're in Velo City, bub. Its kinda like the rat race, but a hell of a lot faster."

Basically Jet Set Radio/Air Gear/Mirrors Edge the RPG.

Personally, I'd love to try a game of VeloCITY myself, but not only do I not have a gaming group, the people that might form one I could join don't seem interested in the setting (or anything other than D&D for that matter).

Dammit /tg/ why is it so hard to have god VeloCITY now? This is an awesome setting and it deserves an awesome thread! Writtfags and drawfags get to it, we need some justice. The rest of you, lets dump some of the fluff stories from the other threads.

/tg/ is shit right now, lets make it awesome with an awesome setting!

Blue was running. He loved it, he lived for it, and hell, someday he'd probably die for it too. But Blue didn't care about death anymore, all he cared about now was the wind in his hair; and now, running along the rooftops, hopping from building to building, the wind was in his hair.

It wasn't always like this though, Blue could remember the fear that Death had once held over him. His earliest memories filled with scenes of himself stealing food for survival. He never had a home, money, or even a proper name, homeless since birth. Sadness was, simply put, the status quo. But then, as in all things, the status quo changed.

Blue was running. The wind was in his hair. He had made this run several times before, here far above the city streets below. It was dusk now, and he could see the vibrant shades of red, orange, pink, and yellow against the clouds, a sharp contrast to the dull grey mass far, far below. How anyone else in that grey mass could see at the sunset and not change would forever boggle his mind. But what confused him the most was how he had missed it for so long.
    >> Anonymous 05/30/10(Sun)18:43 No.10164156
    >>10164130

Blue had always been a runner, he just never knew it. Most were too large to follow his small body through the twisting mass of rails, walls, ledges, and people that made up the streets below. So when he was hungry he could grab and run. It was like any other day, he was hungry and wanted to eat. He had always tried not to steal from other homeless if he could, but this one looked like he could miss a meal, and the cinnamon roll he was carrying looked delicious. So he did what he always did, he snatched the roll and ran. But this one didn't react like the others, he followed.

Blue was running. The wind was in his hair. Blue loved the scenery here, and he loved the pace of the place. Vault here, underbar here, slide here, maybe a flip here, 'nother vault; it was all great fun. Blue never took the exact same route through the rooftops, preferring instead to keep it random, but the run did have one constant, it always ended at the jump he never took. It was a long one, and dangerous too, missing the jump would spell certain death.

Blue remembered being desperate. This one had followed him, on foot through all the twists and turns, dead-set on getting the roll back. Then he had an idea, he would run up. So up they ran, one leading, the other close behind. They went up until they couldn't go up any more. So, in desperation and worry of what this man would do to him, he began taking random turns, jumping from rooftop to rooftop, and somewhere along the ride, the worry faded, he laughed. Then he was struck, tripped from behind with a large wooden staff, and the man spoke, "Not so fast! You take that jump there and you'll fall. But you're good kid. Nah, Kid won't work, I'll call ya Blue, on account of that rag you're wearin' like a shirt. Ah, but where's ma manners, I know ya but ya don't know meh. Name's Red, Kid, wait, sorry, Blue..."
    >> Anonymous 05/30/10(Sun)18:44 No.10164170
    >>10164156

Blue was confused, and this guy Red simply kept talking, "...don't really matter too much tho', something bout roses and what not, but speaking 'bout flowers that roll is mine, but it could be yours, if you accept my deal. See like I said earlier, you're good, but you could be better, someday you may even be able to jump that death gorge you were about to try there. So, Blue, do we have a deal? You come with me and join tha' gang and keep runnin' and you get to eat that roll. Now I know you like runnin' as I could hear ya laughing. So how about it?"
Blue couldn't imagine how someone could talk for this long without stopping. But then Blue looked at Red for the first time and his eyes were opened. Red was tall, with an athletic build, carrying a wooden staff and wearing a long, bright, red cape, but more than that was what was behind Red, the sunset. It was the first time Blue had really seen it: a perfect mixture of reds, blues, oranges, pinks, yellows, and purples. A more beautiful sight Blue had never seen, and struck with complete awe all he could manage was to nod.

Blue was running. The wind was in his hair. He decided that it would be today. He wouldn't stop today. Blue was going to make the jump. He was getting closer and closer with every step, but he didn't worry, he was in complete ecstasy. He would make the jump like any other, he would plant the staff and use it to vault up and over, probably finish in a roll, but not before a flip. As the gap approached he built up speed, until the event. Flawless execution, a nice flip. Blue closed his eyes and felt the wind in his hair. As he opened them he watched the buildings rush up around him, the street was getting closer. Blue just smiled and laughed, the wind was in his hair.

Dead? Define dead. Is it dead when no one cares? Well there were two VeloCITY threads yesterday, one lasted for several hours and entertained the topic of what it is to be a grey. Then there is this thread today, which I cannot obviously be the only poster in. Even if there are two posters in this thread, myself and you, I still care. Even if nobody else cares, I still care.

VeloCITY is not dead, because I refuse to let it die.

    Bad writtfaggotry incoming.

Hiei Krauser grabbed his bag as the bell ran and bolted for the door. 10 floors down and one shot was his only thought. His classmates milled about slowly as he was already out and slipping his 'Punk is Freedom' sweatshirt, bright orange, over his head as he hit his locker. He pressed his palm to it to be read and the lock popped open, he was taking a risk but he had to get out before they caught him. He pulled his board out and stepped upon it, glad for the HeadMusix implant hed gotten for his birthday as 3rd Gen GlitchHop thumped to life in his ears.

Someone called out for him to stop skating in the halls but he was already at the stairwell, Hiei ollied up onto the inner handrail and tailgrinded down to the landing, stopping himself from smashing into the wall barely only to push himself off and hop up to the next floor.

"9 floors to go." He muttered and caught the railing with a hand, vaulting himself up atop it again, gaining speed which made his hands hurt as he wrenched himself down flight after flight of stairs. 8, 7, 6, he passed the seniors floor without the stairway having become its crouded mass of pressed teenage bodies yet, people only beginning to reach the Well of Lost Souls as he was close, so close, 5...

"Hhhhnnnnnnnggggghhhh!" Hiei grunted out as the clothesline caught him right in the stomach. The frail boy folded over the snickering senior's arm as his skateboard rolled without him onto the fourth floor. Tears welled in his eyes as he couldn't breathe from having the air driven from his body so violently, gasping for breath from the pain he gave a sob as more hands grabbed to him and pinned him against the wall.

Those cruel grins looked down at him. "Well, well, well. It seems that our little guppie was trying to run away from us, doesn't that just make you sad Tony?" There was a wicked chuckle from Craig. They were cruel and unrelenting bullies, faces near identical masks of ground down homogeny. They hated him for being bright, a sore spot to their eyes and they couldn't stand him stepping out of their rigid lines of expected behavior.

"Real sad, maybe we should make him sad too?" Tony echoed in expected compliance.

"Heygetoffame!" Hiei struggled to get free. "It's gonna get crouded in here soon, lemme go fuz-lite!" He kicked inneffectively, the tears of helplessness still not leaving his eyes.

Craig shook his head in mock-sadness. "Indeed, he's not showing propper regret for trying to deprive us of his ~colorful~ presence." They used it like a jeer, an insult, he hated them.

But actually *play* it? HAH HAH HAH HAH! You think if we could find groups for ANY RPG, we'd be spending all our time here working on a game that will most likely never get played?

Then, as if from on high, a voice appeared. "Aren't you boys supposed to be headed to sports practice? I'd hate to have to see you in detention again." The sea of hooligans parted for Mrs. Rhamadi. She stood in her trraditional khaki suit with black blouse, the red dot of her traditional hindu heritage standing out as a powerful spec of color as she walked over to Hiei with his board under one arm. She lookes about to the boys and arched a brow. "Well?"

The seniors shuffled and mumbled as they started to move off, leaving with an apt "Catch you later."

Hiei looked up to Mrs. Rhamadi. Taller than he by a fair margin, her roan skin smooth and flawless she smiled down at him with a near sad expression. Buxom and curvey she was a common target for schoolboy crushes, and while certainly he recognized she was beautiful Hiei did not understand why, just that she stood out brightly amongst the drab staff. "You should not let yourself be bullied so Mr. Krauser." She said in a lecturing tone. "And there is no skateboarding in the halls!" She held out his board to him in a kindly gesture.

The boy ducked his head and mumbled a mushed thanks-appology and wiped his eyes piteously as he took back the board and rushed down the last few flights of stairs on foot. He had a date with destiny, or so Dashell had claimed. He didn't look back as he ran from the 15 story high-school complex, ran from the dreary and depressing reality of schooling to the vibrant world his friends had recently dragged him into.

He never wanted to go back.

    Try eleven 200 post threads.

Very little is known about the cops from what I know, much of the finer details are left to the MC's discretion on purpose but it was suggested that some cops chase the punks on fully motorized bikes (motorcycles, dirt-bikes, what have you) which is significant as any fuel source such as oil or gas is exceptionally rare in the city, and the majority of the population travels by foot or electric power (both typically slow and boring).

It is worth noting that the main opposition isn't supposed to be the cops, but the grey, the contagious feeling of boredom, expressionlessness and general monotony of life. That said, most cops are probably greys, and non-grey cops would still strive to catch lawbreakers.

Actually Velocite's pretty much evolved into a general pseudoscience bullshit explanation for how personal vehicles are now so viable, because you can motorize things so small (well motorcycles already existed but with Velocite they can now go full-electric with relative inexpense), but, really, it's just a room-temperature superconductor- Most science fiction introduces one or two elements that don't exist and then construe what's possible with them to change the world.

Personally, I like the idea of fuel being rare or banned for public use so that if one wanted to they could run a campaign where the goal was to stem the tide of fuel into the city so that the city wouldn't be able to keep up with the grey agenda that their superiors had set for them. As an after thought it would mean the police would have a harder time catching the punks.

Yeah, I can see that, but some sort of fast moving full electric underground rail system could fix that. Of course there is the problem of why it wasn't used above ground or applied to cars and roads, but that could be hand-waved as previous bad publicity, city budget cuts, or brand spanking new tech.

There's fluff for pretty much every gang to any degree, that's not the issue.

This is in fact the primary reason this is all stagnating- No one seems to be willing to run or actually play as much as they want something to throw ideas at.

This game is already so full of ideas that it eats thought and shits theorem, that's not the issue. The issue is that at this point the game needs /players/, people who can get in, get stuck in it, find the (myriad) issues, tell me what's wrong so that I can dick with it and then refine the system, and once the system is WORKABLE, then I can actually write down all the fluff.

That aside, the gangs only really need a basic outline and some things past that- every gang having pages upon pages of stories about it will get a bit cumbersome, da?

As for a campaign idea, the generic stuff I had in mind was:

Players are an up-and-coming crew, make the players come up with an emblem/tag to stick stickers of/tag paint of around the city, challenging other crews (made up by the GM or little satellites of bigger gangs) for territory.

Or, you could go the more legal route and have your characters be amateur athletes, being a bit punkish during the day but coming up with tony hawk-style ways of judging style points and how they're gained, and then stacking the characters up against NPCs you made up (notably better for one-shots)

Or, you could make it so that the characters themselves are part of one of the bigger fish, the big gangs, and each player might control their character and one or two NPCs and engage in larger-scale combat with the police and en masse acts of civil disobedience

Entirely up to the GM. Some gang might go crazy with power and try to soak up all the territory and subject everyone, or it might be the police cracking down on the punks with insane regulations and you have to row, row fight the power- or individual corporations might get sick of this punk shit and try and hire some punk-buster soldiers and just go in and clear out the neighborhood, or you could be up against any sort of thing- it's the GM's choice, first and foremost.

Once again, GM fiat. It could be a good ol' brawl between the ranks, or you could go the way that the system's more focused on and have it be like a contest, within however many turns whoever has the most style points wins- This works out because that can become a brawl too, since getting hit can knock down style points

The grey. Not a person, or a group, or even something identifiable as The Man; the antithesis to all Velo City punks is the grey. The grey is the dullness of a boring life and it's contagious influence to others. The grey is the notion of becoming content with your lot in life and accepting the monotony of what "must" be done.

That said, the grey has a number of shapes and forms. Anyone and everyone can be grey at the MCs discretion: teachers, cops, the general populace. But by the same token, you may find people who aren't grey that are also cops, teachers, and businessmen.

To be not grey is simply to refuse to give up expression, and that can be done anywhere; legally or otherwise.

You should probably make a note somewhere that generally discourages MCs from setting up "make this roll or die immediately" situations - because this setting encourages doing acrobatic stunts at downright insane heights. So, it'd kind of suck if an MC *FORCES* the players onto the tops of skyscrapers, puts them in a situation where they have to either leap from roof to roof, and then kill a player off as a result of a single bad roll.

    sounds reasonable.

Perhaps a chance to catch themselves per floor or per X floors, with escalating damage as they drop.

A critical success (however it is handled) meaning they take no damage or half damage? (perhaps they caught a jutting pole and did a cool spinning flip thing instead of just crashing into a stone balcony headfirst)

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. If they roll particularly well they can take less or no damage, even after falling a ways.
    >> Anonymous 05/30/10(Sun)23:08 No.10169132

A crit success is when you roll the target number exactly. If you need to roll a 19 or lower to pass, the target number is 19, the highest you can roll and still succeed.

Well, that goes without saying, but what I was referring to was in the earlier stuff, crews were not only made of multiple gangs, but it was commonplace; as established by the one gang that kept the other gangs friendly like to each other. It was set up in such a way that they did it to help cement relations and keep fights from breaking out.

The quiet girl in the corner, okay but not great looking, wearing mismatched clothes, quiet. Part of the Black Roses more passively than anything, since she started hanging around and then they got kinda protective of her.

And then one day, they saw her Fly.

    If it flops, it flops.

If the Weekly Runs start going, I'll start posting the day after on here every week, detailing how the session went, how the players did, what trials the system had, the story of the current session, etc.

Squigy's family moved to Velo City from dee islands so they could start a resteraunt. Squigy the youngest of 8 was taken into the family bussiness and given the awesome job of delivery boy at the tender age of 7. It was on his 6th delivery out that he met his Sifu Tre'. Tre' knew the city had two sides to it and showed young Squigy a whole new effecient (and cooler) way of delivering Jerk Chicken. Now Squigy has a dream. He to be the number one runner in Velo City.
