    BlackFlag Internal Document #100401

    Mission Briefing “Stone Dagger”
    Source: Blackflag
    Deployment: Musina Airstrip
    Pancake: Musina Airstrip
    Alternate: None
    AAR: None
    AWACS: None
    CSAR: Operation K (Koevoet) Team

    Contract Employer: AECI Limited

Objective: Rescue the AECI Regional Director
    Secondary Objective: Rescue AECI employees
    >> Anonymous 06/25/10(Fri)21:46 No.10744516
Background: This just got dropped on us and we're going to have to move fast to succeed. AECI has recently had several members of its regional sales team abducted while touring mining facilities in the border town of Musina. AECI is apparently being blackmailed by some form of renegade group, looking to acquire both explosives and chemical weapons. They have been transported north, to a rebel held compound in Zimbabwe, which means that the options for South Africa, militarily at least, are out the window. AECI cannot, obviously, accede to the rebel demands, and the Zimbabwean government is dragging its heels on the diplomatic front, so we're being contracted to perform a rescue operation. Due to the rushed nature of this, we have not been able to secure and sanitize an airfield for your aircraft, so they will remain at their present location under guard. Instead, we have set up a small field strip west of Musina, it's a completely unprepared strip, so big jets are out of the question.
    >> Anonymous 06/25/10(Fri)21:47 No.10744533
The current plan involves a rapid airborne assault on the suspected location of the hostages, here, -21° 54' 12.13", +30° 32' 50.75". You will be bringing in eight soldiers of the ex-Koevoet force, who will sweep the compound and organize the hostages. Your primary mission is to ensure the AECI regional director makes it out of that camp safely. If you can find and rescue additional hostages, AECI has offered to pay out above and beyond contracted terms. The further details of the plan will be left to your Squadron, but I must emphasize that time is of the essence if we hope to have any chance of locating the hostages before they are moved to a more secure location.
We are coordinating with several shipping companies, and will have your selected airframes operational at the forward base by the time you arrive. Dash Ones will be sent to the printer onboard the waiting Yak-40 that will be transporting you to the Musina aerodrome. Please ensure you pass your purchase orders to the requisitions rep before departing, her number is on the back of your briefing document.
    >> Anonymous 06/25/10(Fri)21:48 No.10744553
HUMINT: We only know the location of the hostages, counts of enemies are unreliable, but currently stand at a minimum of twelve on the compound.
    ELINT: None available
SATINT: Will be available on landing at Musina if purchased.
Air Assets: Zimbabwe has J-7 fighters, but it is doubtful that they will pose a problem.
Surface Assets: Unknown at campsite, border units comprise mostly small arms.

Threat Assessment: Low. The guards are mostly off-duty border soldiers, with limited combat experience.

ROE: Avoid engaging Zimbabwean national units if possible. Over the target area, weapons free.

So we started off by picking our equipment, and some stuff was more expensive than usual due to the short time notice involved in getting it. Judge and I both cheaped out a bit, while Hugs and Scotch spent a bit more cash. We also pooled some money for our secret plan, which came into effect later. When we told Steve our plan, he thought it wasn't bad, and so it turned out we could carry an additional four man squad with us, as well as some other personnel. Judge bought a Mi-8 Hip, whereas I went for a Twin-Huey. Hugs meanwhile had an ex-Israeli CH-53, and it was converted on the spot as we prepped. Scotch managed to grad a Panha 2091, and would be acting as our primary gunship. I fixed twin miniguns on my Huey, along with two 7 shot rocket pods and a nose mounted grenade launcher. Judge stuffed his hardpoints with big rockets and gunpods, and Scotch also chose rockets and some Sidewinders. We then loaded our cargo, and talked about the plan one more time, before spooling up our engines and some william tell.

We crossed low over the border, entering far from a main road, and hopefully undetected. As we continued on, we began to get into our position for entry, stopping about 3 km away to get set up. Scotch would lead us in, with myself following. Hugs would begin setting up an orbit pattern, and Judge would hold back initially, since he was basically are airborne rocket artillery platform. Timing was everything, hoping to act with total surprise. After two minutes of rushed setup, we were off again, heading towards the next small hillrise, on the otherside of which was the camp. It was about three in the afternoon, not ideal, but this was a rush job. Scotch crested the hill first, with me following close behind, closing in on the fast approaching camp.

Scotch came in fast, his WSO taking two quick shots as he raced over the camp. I followed, performing a quick strafe of the area, avoiding the buildings I saw as best I could. We had no idea where this guy was, or where anyone was, so our first pass was to get their attention. It apparently worked. We began making our turn to come back in, and we could see small specks of muzzle flashes as several people on the ground began firing at us. Too far away to have any real chance of hitting us, but worrying a little bit. My other plane was immune to groundfire for the most part, it just moved too fast. The Huey did not. However, when they started shooting at us, it gave us a clear idea of who the bad guys were, and Scotch began hunting them down with his chin cannon as I loitered out of range. Hugs then arrived, orbiting at altitude, and we began to see the benefit of his idea. He had cut a hole in the side of the big Sikorsky, and a crew was servicing the big Bofors 40mm as it began to unleash devestation at anyone unfortunate enough to be caught in the open holding a weapon.

There was a lot of confusion now at the camp, and I came in, fast and low, firing the first three grenades in the bin ahead of me, as planned. The smoke grenades detonated, providing limited cover in the area I was fast approaching, and I dipped down on the outskirts of the camp, slowing only long enough to let off the four man team beside one of the camp buildings, before taking off again, the door gunners firing heavily into the fray on the ground. I told Hugs the team was off, and we began concentrating our fire outside of the smoke area, and let the ground team get to work. Several sharp pings indicated I was taking some fire, and I headed outbound, picking up speed and preparing for a fast run. Then our radio crackled to life, and some foreign language spilled out over the open channel, we could hear helicopters and gunfire in the background, and with a sinking feeling we all looked at each other and realized we hadn't brought any signal jammers.

If they thought to take air-to-air weapons of their own, then it might just be those J-7s taking the heat-seekers up the tailpipe. It can sometimes be more difficult to aqquire a gunship that's right down in the weeds (I mean IN the weeds, 20-30 feet) and said gunships are more then capable of taking front-aspect IR shots on YOU.

We told our team on the ground that there was a radio hut broadcasting, but at this point, Judge, who had been waiting on the outskirts, saw a tower, and decided that it was the radio mast. He nudged his big hip forward, and pounded across the plain towards the campsite, firing a quick missile salvo as he went. He passed over the campsite as the four rockets slammed into the hut with the tower, tearing it apart in a massive explosion (he had the biggest rockets of all of us) before exiting the area. We called down to the ground team and told them to clear the open area, and I came through, miniguns blazing, sweeping the center of the camp on my quick pass. Then Hugs called, while I had been performing my pass, several vehicles had bolted from sheds, tearing out of the area at speed, he couldn't get a good count because of the smoke and dust, but we all decided it was best if he continued orbiting the area, providing fire support. It was close to impossible to tell where our ground team was now, but our second team was inbound, as Judge grounded his Hip on the opposite side of the camp, and they rushed out, heading to the nearest building, using the chaos as cover. Then two high speed vehicles crested the ridge, heading for the campsite.

Luckily, the vehicles were on our side, and were carrying the rest of our ground team. We had dropped them off from the cargo slings at the staging point, and they were arriving in the nick of time to best profit from the confusion we had sown at the camp. In the lead was a british FAV with a browning M2 in a turret, and bringing up the rear was an armoured Panhard VBL mounting a Soviet 14.5 mm KPV. The VBL moved into the camp to support, the heavy clang from the big gun audible even to us, and the FAV roared after one of the fleeing cars, choosing to follow the SUV on the road. I swung round and began chasing a Jeep, and Scotch flew in after another SUV heading south. This left two other cars which we were not following, but Judge climbed higher to keep them in sight. My radio crackled again, this time our home base telling us there was a lot of activity at the border, and an armed Zimbabwean helicopter had been seen heading north a few minutes ago. We realized then who had heard the radio call.

God DAMN, do I hear you on that. IL-2s padlock is actively retarded. It'll keep on tracking bandits you can't see because they've slid under your nose- which is an "unrealistic" advantage- and then just as quickly it'll spastically flip out and point your view at your navel, which is a bit of a frikkin problem when you're desperately scissoring at 40 feet.

And since I prefer the P-40, I am ALWAYS scissoring at low-level.

One of the ground teams radioed us and told us they'd located two hostages, and were requesting pickup. We told them to hold on, as we were currently dealing with the departing SUVs. Then the first SAM popped up, must have been an older model, since it didn't lock, and passed harmlessly by Hugs. Judge saw the smoke trail and hammered the treeline with rockets, sending up plumes of dirt and branches. He continued to monitor the area, in case he had missed, but no more rockets were coming out of it. Meanwhile, Scotch was closing on his SUV, when his gunner saw the sunroof open and a figure stand up holding a long tube. Without thinking, he fired the chin gun, the fast acting chaingun tearing the SUV to shreds before the enemy weapon could fire. The SUV caught fire and veered off into a tree, coming to a dramatic halt on the veld. The little FAV approached it's target from the rear, successfully shooting out the tires, and then firing some warning shots so the people inside had no ideas about being a hero. Myself, I pulled alongside my target, having told my side gunner to watch for an RPG, and looked at the driver, mouthing for him to pull the fuck over. He got the hint, and started to decelerate as I pulled around to the front of the vehicle, traveling backwards now, so I could cover it with my own weaponry. However, I then realized I had no way of securing the vehicle.

I came down close to the earth and told my doorgunner to go get the friendlies out. He approached pistol drawn, and I kept shouting in english over the speaker attached to the bird. We got three people out of the back of the jeep, and the doorgunner herded them back to the Huey, and got them settled. To make sure the jeep wouldn't be a problem, I had the other doorgunner shoot out the engine as we departed, climbing and heading for the next target. Unfortunately, the ground teams were becoming quite insistent on us picking up people, so I circled to the FAV and approached for a pickup of the hostages they had recovered, when I noticed the reccondos had lined up several people on the ground. Just as I was coming in, I saw the FAV fire, and the four bodies slumped over into the tall grass amidst puffs of blood.

    Sounds like Swat with the morals of the FFL, from wikipedia;

"Koevoet (Afrikaans for crowbar), also known as "Operation K" and officially known as the "South West Africa Police Counter-Insurgency Unit" (SWAPOL-COIN), was a police counter insurgency unit in South-West Africa (now Namibia) during the 1970s and 1980s. ("Crowbar" was an allusion to their mission of prying insurgents from the local population).

They were the most effective unit (in terms of personnel lost versus enemies killed) deployed against SWAPO fighters (seeking Namibian independence from South Africa) and were accused by them of brutal and indiscriminate use of force"

Back at the camp, things were degenerating, the rebels had taken up position in one of the buildings, and the ground forces didn't know who was inside. Judge abandoned his watch, and swooped down, loading two hostages into the Hip before departing again, allowing the ground team more freedom of movement. Then another SAM leaped up from the smoke around the camp, heading towards the Hip. Judge didn't see it but his IR warning system did, and his countermeasures kicked into overdrive, spilling flares out everywhere. The missile failed to track as well and raced after a flare, exploding low over the ground. Unfortunately the Hip had created a new problem, as the flares continued burning in the grasslands, several small fires started, quickly growing in size. Scotch had his own problems, he had finally found the next car, but the hostages had guns to their heads, and he had limited options for stopping the vehicle. He broke off pursuit, and climbed slightly, and saw the path headed to a small bridge over a creek. Quickly angling over, he blew the bridge to pieces with rockets, and raced low over the river, hovering where the bridge used to be, waiting for the vehicle to turn the bend.

The Jeep raced around the bend, too fast, and saw the bridge was out. They swerved to try to avoid crashing down into the creek, but were moving at such a speed that they rolled. The occupants, including hostages, were forcibly ejected as the jeep tumbled sideways over the rocks and mud, coming to a stop on it's side in the water. Scotch radioed us and we all decided that he would not be running the last intercept, and he headed back to the camp to lend what support he could. I had finished picking up the survivors, and the FAV raced out towards the last fleeing vehicle, as I headed back to the camp to rendezvous with the Hip or the Sikorsky to drop off my load of four. We still hadn't located the primary objective though, and our time window was closing every minute we spent in the area. This was emphasized when Hugs called out that he could see approaching vehicles way off in the distance, maybe three to five minutes out, coming from the west.

I came down close to the Hip, offloading my passengers, before pushing back into the air, and heading out towards the inbound vehicles. Scotch formed up and took lead, leaving the two heavy helos at the rebel base. The fire was getting quite bad, having spread quickly, and in the direction of the camp. A third SAM popped out of the chaos, and this time, the flares didn't work, the CH-53 took a hit, but continued flying miraculously. The gunners were not impressed and pounded the area the shot had come from with heavy continuous fire from the Bofors. The Panhard crew had had enough, and was now shooting high into the camp building, as the other ground forces moved in to sweep it. Scotch and I rose above the final trees, and immediately knew we were in trouble. The beds of the first two trucks erupted in fire as we approached, tracers reaching out. I thumbed the firing button and let loose with all my rockets into the formation, as Scotch did the same. My copilots window exploded inwards and I felt a sharp pain in my leg as we raced overtop the carnage and destruction of our pass. When I looked back I saw that one of the doorgunners was missing, the other was firing wildly behind us. We turned, and saw more tracers coming, I felt the impacts on my copter and the controls started to feel heavy. But then scotch raced past, chin cannon roaring, and another truck was reduced to scrap. I turned the wounded Huey back towards the flames of the camp as Scotch finished mopping up the area.

I looked down and realized my leg had been hit by Shrapnel, but a quick bandage and I was ok for now. The ground forces had secured the final building at the camp, and were herding the remaining hostages out of the area. I changed course and headed towards the final jeep, which the FAV was still a minute away from. Scotch took up position over the camp as the Sikorsky touched down, and the camp surviors were pushed up the ramp. Hugs reported to us all that the commandos were walking around the camp, putting bullets into skulls of anyone on the ground, but by this point, we didn't care. The FAV was almost at the final jeep when a rocket raced out from a small treeline. It took the FAV out in a quick blast, leaving only wreckage tumbling through the air. I lined up with the trees without thinking, and then small arms fire pushed out of them, and I saw my displays go red with warning lights and my headphones screamed with shrill failure warnings. The ground rushed up to meet us as my Huey went in.

We hit hard, the skids absorbing part of it before breaking off. The huey rolled, and the rotors smashed themselves into the ground, wrenching the transmission and engines beyond all repair. The whole bird came to a rest in the tall grass field, upside down. The other doorgunner was dead, suspended upside down with a neck at an odd angle. My copilot actually shook me awake, and pulled me from the plane, and we both sprinted away from the wreck, hearing gunfire and shouts from behind us. (I had to go into another room, and was handed notes for 'radio') We suddenly came under heavy fire, with bullets whizzing past, as the enemy soldiers chased after us. My emergency radio crackled, and I heard Hugs tell me to launch a flare, which frankly seemed like a stupid idea given my situation. However, he told me to launch a goddamn flare, so with reluctance, I popped one into the sky. The shooting grew heavier immediately, but then was drowned out as Judge roared over the field, rocket pods and gun pods firing in a hellstorm of death and destruction to a position just west of my copilot and I. They had used the flare to locate me, and put fire on the enemy. The Sikorsky rumbled into view and came low, and we scrambled up the back ramp, Hugs lifting off the moment we were on board.

I went to the jump seat and sat behind Hugs as he flew us back towards the flaming inferno that was the campsite. Judge radioed to us that the final car had been stopped, and the commandos and hostages were on board, although one of the hostages had been shot, along with one of the commandos. A speck appeared on the horizon, and Scotch called out that he had a border patrol 412 heading our way, armed apparently. A bright flash and a smoke trail lanced out from Scotch's helicopter, followed ten seconds later by a blossoming fireball on the horizon, as Scotch called again to tell us the path home was clear. Judge made a final sweep over the compound, blowing the Panhard and remaining buildings to shreds, before turning back towards home. We thundered over the plain, for a good 15 minutes when we began to get hit with search radar from a single airborne source. Scotch was the only one with equipment good enough, and he told us it looked like an F-7's signature, and it was closing fast.

Area 88, an OVA from the late 80s about the Mercenary Airforce of a Middle Eastern Kingdom thrown into civil war in the late 70s, early 80s.

Main character is a Japanese Airline pilot whose "Friend" tricks him into signing a contract with the French Foreign Legion, who is providing mercenary pilots for the nation, based out of an airbase known only as Area 88". He has 3 options, Complete a 3 year tour of duty, pay off the 1.5million dollar buyout on his contract, or defect/desert, a capital offense.

Pretty good, its an 80s anime, so the retardedness quotient is pretty low. Its definitely a war drama though. The main character's sanity continuously erodes as he fights against the dehumanization he suffers fighting in the war.

If you're gonna check it out, make sure you get the 80s OVA, not the 2000s TV series, which is by all accounts crappy.

You're welcome to try the series, it just not nearly as good as the OVA. Especially the visuals. Hand drawn 80s animation will always look decent. The early 2000s CGI used in the series has NOT aged well.

The final piece of our plan slipped into place, as the Crotale SAM launcher that Hugs had transported in, lit off all four tubes, sending supersonic missiles at the unfortunate aircraft pursuing us. We never learned if it managed to evade some of them, all we knew was that it didn't evade enough of them, as we saw the signal abruptly disappear. We continued flying, with Hugs' losing one of his engines to a malfunction caused by damage on the way back, but nothing worse than that. We landed at the airfield, where we set about organizing the hostages. It was at this point that we realized that the leader was not among them, and was among the dead out in the burning African fields. We asked but did not find out where the leader had been. AECI was happy with the majority of their hostages being returned, but the loss of their Executive meant that we had not really achieved success, only PAR. One of the members of AECI told us that we should have done a better job, and not been so trigger happy. I was glad when Scotch punched the little prick in the jaw. A small consolation I suppose, this mission turned out to be a lot more complicated then we expected. I think we failed because we didn't have a good plan for dealing with escaping people, we had the speed, but several times we ended up in “what now” situations where our hands were tied.

Very true. The PCs are an air assault squadron, they don't exactly have a dedicated specops team they can field at-will. Still, two two-man sniper teams could've nipped that whole "running away" problem in the bud.

Ah well. All the main characters returned alive, and most of the hostages got out. Beats a sharp stick in the eye.

At the very least i'd like to get his price lists from him. The RPG stuff we can do fairly well. The pricelists are a pain in the posterior to come up with.

Truth be told he probably priced planes according to value more than reality. That was how I planned to do it, with older models being relatively cheap, and new stuff pricey.

Trying to find actual data on prices is futile, especially since a/c manufacturers sell under list all the time.

There's some, like specific things like iron bombs, you can get a bonus to your attempt for if you are better trained in it. Hugs is really good with ata missiles, but his atg is not as good because he optimised his character, whereas I am ok at most things, but not great at anything really.
There is progression as well, although it is very slow. Planes are sort of characters as well, since you can upgrade various bits to make it help in combat when you really need it. We all put on ir detectors for example, since those SAMS are very dangerous.
