2e character concept:
The apprentice of a high-level wizard, killed and Reincarnated as a housecat, possibly by the BBEG.
He's knowledgable, but low enough on Con and cash that he's not willing to risk the System Shock roll for a Polyspell until he's reasonably assured of it working.
That said, he's a studious little bastard and has been quietly researching new arcane formulae whose primary component is "mao".
He carries a collection of catnip mice and claims that they are spellbooks: their exotic scents and carefully spaced bite/claw patterns reveal his spells as he "meditates" upon them (Read: gets higher than a motherfucker inside his tent). He has also been known to use Quipu strings for the same purpose.

Current spells include Burning Hands (Or rather, a fire breath weapon, effectively), Feather fall and Hold Portal (Verbal only, btw), Light & Ventriloquism (VM only), and Read Magic - not that it does much good. He's researching new somatic components as well, because it's duecedly hard to stand on his hind legs and bat at the air in an adorable fashion for 10 seconds trying to get his spells off.
Other than the quipus, however, writing is also something of a bitch - and most of his stenographers have had to be fired fairly rapidly.

I'm a notoriously harsh DM, and I think this sounds like a hilarious idea.

We managed to use both the wishes in a ring of wishing before anyone realised what it was, the thief of the party had said "I wish he'd stay like that" after a trap turned me into a cat. I was a neutral and evil mage, tydell, who had generally been screwing the party.

The end result is that much later I had a chest with a catflap in the side; with a portable hole; the chest was set up so that when it opened (presuming traps disabled) it had 3 layers of trays to sell potions from, if you went in the catflap, it was a 10x10 alchemy lab, where I brewed potions and researched spells, and sadly had built a golem without considering how I'd get him out; the GM ruling that when I paid to have the chest made, the hole was permamently sealed. I did however, reduce person a dwarf and have him build me a ballista.

There were some fun moments of the party fighter using the chest as a gun; but mostly it was amusing rolling around as a cat leveling as thief until I could get feats to remove the need for speaking. got a ring of telekeniss at one point and would fly around, hurling insults with telepathy. Good times.

You should probably approach your DM about playing an awakened housecat and show him this thread (it's archived). Mental stats upon awakening are random, really you should try to work out a suitable point buy and loss of HD for the class you are interested in playing.

Try the Noble Wild supplement. It lets you play intelligent animals and gives all sorts of awesome shit. Such as class levels in cat, unique "postures" you can assume daily and special rules regarding magic being used by animals.

Let's presume an awakened cat sorcerer though and he could make things interesting with the leadership feat.

Take leadership at 6th level, get a cohort that's 1 level below you. Get leadership score up to into the double digits and he starts having followers. Level 6 + 4 cha mod + 2 base of operations (build a mage tower), leading to 12 leadership a level 5 cohort (wizard) and 8 level 1 wizards (students).

At 20 leadership, you have 50 level 1, and a dozen ranging from level 2 to level 5.

As in found an academy of wizardry, having the cohort be the face and you as the shadow school master.

There's no universal suite of feats for a given caster. LogicNinja is actually on the board right now, and he wrote a great wizard guide, but he may not be following or have noticed this thread.

Warlocks I can't really help you with. To some extent they are stat-indepedent magic users, so they be what you are looking for, but they also lack the power of a true caster. On the other hand, they can use their abilities pretty much constantly and are appreciably powerful enough to contribute in the majority of D&D games.

Metamagic feats are generally useful for most casters. Reserve feats are also decent for most casters. A reserve feat that heals, summons an elemental or does some damage can be useful for infinite out-of-battle healing; trapfinding and other small duties or blasting mooks/blasting when you are out of resources.

Summoning feats can also be useful. Druids often get mileage out of summoning feats, and so do Wizards or Sorcerors particularly focused on summons. Of note in any mention of arcane summoning classes is the Malconvoker. A very nice prestige class, it restricts you to only summoning evil creatures but at the same time gives you a host of summoning benefits, including eventually doubling the number of your summons. For a sorceror, this can act as an excellent increase in utility, as the summons have abilities that the sorceror's limited suite of spells prevents him from duplicating.

Interesting idea. Let me run with it, if you please:

1. Play as one of the PC's familiar. This will give you an established relationship, and make for some fine rp opportunities. As it turns out, you're special, and the "find familiar" spell is a minor geas to your kind as you level up. You'll be able to shake it sooner or later if you wanted. No need to tell your master/mistress, though. Cats keep their own secrets.

2. Tell the DM to keep your xp expenditure and abilities secret from you.

3. You are actually an awakened guardian of the Temple of Bast (or some other appropriate goddess). You have a mission, which could be to track someone down, a lost item, a runaway prisoner, a potential young priestess with a destiny, etc. Your abilities come from your goddess herself, and NO ONE knows what you're really capable of, or your true nature.

This reminds me of a silly character I made for a 3.5 game once. It was a game about the PCs being road construction guards. I wanted to make a unique character and had just found the tibit, a race of housecat/halfling natural shapeshifters. I made him a ninja and took a feat that allowed me to make a skill a class skill. I choose Iajutsu Focus and used my claws. Mostly I would shift into a cat during the day and sleep under the wagon as laborers put down the road section (with toppled walls of stone!). Thus later when the BBEG's disguise was seen through and he panicked, threw a smoke bomb, and dove under the wagon my character was nose to nose with him. While we were both surprised I had a cat's dex and won initiative. Unsheathe claws, hit/hit, (Sudden Strike + Iajutsu Focus dice + 1d2-2) x2 = fine red mist. Campaign over!
