Reasons for abandoning Children: Irresponsible parents, poverty, danger at home, child gets lost, dead parents, political fostering, Slavery.
Irresponsible Parents: Parents too busy partying to properly care for child. Either concerned third party whisks the child away to safety, or it wanders away on its own and finds a new home.
Poverty: The region the family is from is experiencing severe famine or economic adjustments. The family is not able to support the child, and gives them to another family to take care of in their stead. Family might be re-locating to another area to try their luck there, but child is too young to survive the journey, and is left in the care of others in a village along the way.
Danger at Home: Family lives in a region either involved in a war or conflict with other powers, or possibly in an environment too dangerous for a child to survive in. Child is taken away from the location to be cared for in a quiet, safe environment.
Child gets Lost: The child accidentally becomes separated from their parents, and is unable to find them again. Benevolent strangers agree to take care of them until their parents are found. Due to distance traveled before being found, locating the original parents proves impossible.
Dead Parents: Parents were killed either by an invading force or natural disaster. Child is either taken by the invaders, or a second group that comes to the ruins to look for treasure/survivors.
Political Fostering: Child is given to another society as part of a peace agreement at a very young age, either to create deeper bonds with the nations, or as a gesture of servitude.
Slavery: Child is placed into slavery, and later bought and freed by a caring person in the area. Child is raised as normal, but the complicated slavery transactions makes finding the parents impossible. |
