    >The basic premise: You started out as a generic creature with no voice, no skills, feats, or special abilities whatsoever, and every stat at 10.
    >Whenever you eat a creature you acquire one of its traits. Permanently. For the purpose of this quest, that means I'll give you a short list to choose from.

The day's been less than satisfying. A potential threat escaped and you cut your losses rather than pursue down a potentially trapped and guarded tunnel. You seem to be accruing enemies faster than you can eliminate them.

All that stuff will have to wait, though. It's time for your meeting with Gaul, the Right Arm of Heironeous. At least you're not hungry right now.

The barkeep scowls as you turn promptly around and exit. You lean against the wooden front wall of the Broken Club, and just watch the people passing by on the cobblestone street. The cool, dry breeze makes it a relaxing endeavor.

Eventually you see the face you're looking for. He spots you a moment later and gives a nod.

Okay so how do we do this?
We can tell him about the cult.
We can tell him about our nature.
We can tell him we want to be his BFFF.

Alright here's my plan. We tell him about the cult and offer to fight it with him. We don't use any out of the ordinary power during that time, just use our sword and badass stats.
Afterwards we tell him about our nature, and how we want to join him and become a force for good.
He'll trust us a bit more after the fight, and be more willing to accept our quirks.
    >> Anonymous 11/12/10(Fri)22:47 No.12777579
I think we should tell him that we have some information that may prove helpful to him, but first we've got a story of our own. Tell him what we are, and how we're wanting to go Good, see if he can give us a hand with that.

    Then mention the cult.

Something along the lines of these two together, though I do think we should give him the information we have regarding the cult. What better way to get in good with him, and if we can get him to come to terms with our nature then we can devour the cultists he helps us kill.

    >LOOK RECAP (from last thread)
You woke up in the city of Thurminham without memories, equipment, or anything remarkable about you. Except, that is, a powerful need to eat--and the ability to acquire traits from the things you ate. Which you proceeded to do both of, in spades. This has attracted its share of notice from various parties, besides decimating the city's cat and bird populations.

You became acquainted with Claire, a fledgling wizard, when she pulled your unconscious self off the street--since then you've been split between eating her and befriending her, but have let her live so far. You started using her place as shelter and her courier service as cover; that changed when revenge-driven adventurers kidnapped her and set an ambush for you there. The trap nearly killed you and managed to burn down the entire building. You escaped, barely, and sought out your attackers on more even terms.

In the course of striking back at the adventurer party, you teamed up with a nameless bodysnatcher, able to take over the bodies of other beings by burrowing into their bloodstreams. He seemed to think the two of you had some sort of connection; most curiously, you could not acquire a trait from eating any body he had been in. You parted on good terms after the battle, him leaving in the body of a large human barbarian.

Claire lost a lot of her innocent outlook on life after the kidnapping and torture by the adventurer party, and seems to care a lot less about other people coming to harm. She's been helping you, most recently copying down maps and information from the library for you (she's making us an amulet now, needs some more cash for materials).

You've also learned that the sewers are a decent, if dangerous, place to hunt; that there seems to be a war brewing with a lich-ruled nation to the north; and that the country is waging an almost guerrilla war with lycanthropes who have a presence in the nearby forest. Oh, and Morsel, the cat you bought, is still missing.

You were then found by Karreesa, a member of a cult attempting to bring a being they call the Devourer into the world. She thought that you are a splinter of this being, and had been generally obeying your orders because of it. She sent word out for a large chunk of the cult to come to Thurminham. The non-essential members should start arriving within a couple days--some of them voluntary meals for the taking. The crucial cult members are busily preparing another ritual to bring the Devourer to the current plane of existence.

Then you met Gaul, the Right Arm of Heironeous. You sought him with an ambush ready and prepared for a dangerous battle; you left him with a new hope for tomorrow. Rather than a fanatical religious butcher, he turned out to be a friendly and brotherly sort--as well as a cunning warrior. As your conversation grew in length, you began to wonder if perhaps, this sort of path might be one you could follow. You left with the promise to meet again tonight.

Arriving back at the cult safehouse, Karreesa accused you of being a fraud, and you killed her before she could warn more than the two cultists present. You now have her knowledge of the cult's organization--and know now that she paid someone in the underworld to spy on you. She was to meet him today at an outdoor restaurant, but you decided that it would be far better if you arrived for a personal date with the guy.

Then we let the guy escape after demanding information from him and letting him know that we were onto him. We switched the inn that we and Claire are staying in, and got some new clothes.

We tell Gaul we are a something of a petty con man who impersonates people to get at valuables or info that can be turned into cash. We were running a con, impersonating someone we thought was a smuggler for the thieves guild, but it turned out there was alot about the guy we were impersonating we didn't know.

We say that we found out he was some kind of bigshot in an underground religion ("You heard of something called the cult of the Devourer before?") and we got pulled into all kinds of sick rituals ("They took these two guys, twins... and they cut them in HALF! And then they sewed the halves together!") We completely blew our cover, we just didn't know enough, and that alone would probably be enough for the to try and hunt us down whereever we go. But there's something else, before we had to run we saw something really important. It was a list. It had names and places. Members of the cult and safehouses and storehouses, and something about a divine splinter ,there's no way they'll let us give up on us with what we know. So we need help, and we don't know who else to turn too.

His God has led him here, apparently, to deal with the cult of the Devourer. If we explain what we are, what we know and express a sincere desire to work with him on destroying the cult, we have a good chance to become the garbage disposal that has the privilege of devouring powerful and evil things while having a couple of strong and faithful allies having our back. Ones we don't have to worry about invading our bodies.

Gaul raises an eyebrow. "You've got a way with kids. Really though, it didn't bother me. You get used to it. People might thank you for a couple days, and it's all the free drink you want--you can get some REALLY nice vintage that way, let me tell you--but after that they start getting nervous, and hope you'll move on. Sheep don't really like a sheepdog--he reminds them that there are wolves out there. And wolves are scary.

"Which is fine, really. It's not like I'm sticking around anyways, there's always that pull. The WHERE. I can fight it of course, but it's always there, that slight nagging guiding me to the next wolf."

    >"So if you're hunting the worst of the wolves, what do you do when you run into the rest of the wolves? Kill them as opportunity presents itself, without seeking them out? Let them run free? Use them to help kill that worst wolf when possible?"
"Depends entirely on the circumstance, and I'm sorry to not be more specific. Maybe I can explain, though. There's only three real guiding rules that Heironeous gave me--the rest I've had to make up on my own. Which is a pain, though I suppose it keeps me flexible. Anyways, these three rules are really simple: Protect the Innocent. Redeem the Willing. Smite the Wicked."

Sometimes a guy might be headed down the path of the wolf, but before he's too far gone he can be brought back into the fold--or even, turn into a sheepdog himself. Some of those wolves have got a real taste for blood--they like seeing people suffer, they don't have the slightest compunction about killing one of their own--and there's not a thing you can do for them but make sure they don't hurt anyone else. Figuring out who's who is part of what makes this business so damn hard."

Gaul is not going to scream and flee when we tell him our true nature. Part of what he does is bringing redemption to those who can be redeemed, and turn wolves into sheepdogs. We don't necessarily need to tell him we've eaten people, but if we want to associate with him long term, he needs to know, and the sooner the better, because we Hunger.

No. That's not his MO. He goes for strong, fit bodies to jump in to. The cult is taking pregnant women for their rituals and sacrifices.

You glance at the other people in the bar and make sure they're not listening in. "I have some information you may find useful," you start. Gaul raises an eyebrow. You continue, being careful about what you say. You don't want to lie, but easing into things seems wise.

"A few days ago, there was a mixup about my identity, and I got... 'introduced' to a group called the Cult of the Devourer. Heard of them at all?" Gaul nods slowly. "They're not the sort of people I'm interested in calling friends. But I took that as an opportunity to do some poking into what they're up to. Which is: a lot of sick things. I heard about some ritual of theirs where they took a pair of twins, cut them in half, and sewed them back together. Not nice people."

"Unfortunately, I didn't know enough to keep up the charade, and I had to run before I could find out more about their higher-ups. The one who figured me out is dead, but there's at least a couple others who know I'm not legit. Odds are that the cult will be after me, sooner or later. After all, I committed a list to memory of low-level members, safehouse and storehouse locations, the like. And unless I'm mistaken, I also know their goal: to bring a being called the Devourer into the world."

Gaul stays silent a moment, absorbing what you've told him.
"That certainly merits investigation. But why wait to tell me? No, I see why. Nevermind."

"You've heard of this group before, though?" you prompt.

"Yes. Not a great deal about them, mind you. What I learned then, in another town, made them seem far less of a problem. I'd conjecture from what you told me that they may have Thurmingham as their cult's primary location. A pity you weren't able to find out about their leadership. Cut off the head, as the saying goes... Still, I may be able to accomplish much with this information, particularly if you can name members and locations to look into. Thank you."

Gaul takes a long sip of ale. "You're sure about that? Don't think I'm being dismissive, but this is dangerous work, and people get hurt. That's not a possibility. That's a fact." Gaul states. "I'm not going to turn you away if you've put some thought into it, but if you've got family depending on you this isn't a good idea. If you haven't thought about what life could be like, unable to walk or unable to see, and accept that as something that could happen, this isn't a good idea. I'll take your help and gladly, but I won't do it if you're not aware of the danger."

"I've got a vested interest in taking down this cult. Some people that I care about may be in danger now because of possible retribution meant for me," you respond. "Besides, I have names and places, and there was a meeting today--"

Gaul raises his hand. "In due time. Keep in mind that there's something happening in this city so black with evil that I can taste it. It may be the cult. It may not be. Either way, my priority is that evil. Not that the cult doesn't seem like a very valid candidate."

I realized recently that the PC here, jack, has no sense of humor whatsoever. This led me to notice that he doesn't seem to have much of a personality either. I suspect this is due to the multiple-players, one character thing we have going, and as such can't really be messed with, not that I want it to be since it's rather fun.

My point is, does Jack come off as someone with some kind of multiple-personality disorder, and if so are you going to sweep it under the rug or play it up?

    Druids can Speak With Animals.

    Animals are sentient in setting.

They can also Speak With Plants.

    Plants are sentient in setting.

Paladins, most likely are aware of this, as is the rest of the world - if only because of medieval understanding of things.

Dead is dead. He knows that when he has a steak - that that is a sentient creature he could ask a Druid to have helped him speak with.

If he has any pretension to moral strength, then eating the bodies of the dead is not something he can take umbrage with. The only objection he can raise is to unlawful, unjust murder.

If eating a corpse gives you the power to prevent others from becoming corpses - what would an actual Paladin do? There's nothing in their code against it. Every body we eat helps "justice".

A paladin must be of lawful good alignment and loses all class abilities if she ever willingly commits an evil act.

Additionally, a paladin’s code requires that she respect legitimate authority, act with honor (not lying, not cheating, not using poison, and so forth), help those in need (provided they do not use the help for evil or chaotic ends), and punish those who harm or threaten innocents.

While she may adventure with characters of any good or neutral alignment, a paladin will never knowingly associate with evil characters, nor will she continue an association with someone who consistently offends her code. A paladin may accept only henchmen, followers, or cohorts who are lawful good.

eating dead bodies is a evil act. eating the bodies of your fallen foes is not honorable

You are aware that in some cultures it is a high honour? DnD is not a game that cares for cultural relativism, true - but there are races that are not evil and eat their dead.

The most respectful thing we can do to our enemy is to eat them and make their essence a part of us rather than leave their body to rot. How is that not honourable?

That section of the PHB has been interpreted differently even in official published settings, where paladins have been given more or less leeway. There's no reason to say in this setting that paladin's can't lie to devils.

A live cow is worth less than a live human because the cow has a significantly lower ability to produce utility (pleasure, happiness, the fulfillment of desire/preference, etc.). However, once they're both dead, this difference is no longer in play.

Also, if eating the human would generate greater utility, then it is the moral action. They're already dead, so it's not like we're inflicting pain (generating negative utility) by eating them, and we can use what we gain to help people (generating positive utility).

No, /tg/ doesn't, We just have a higher number of short sighted idiots in the thread tonight. People who think they can trust this guy when we have no reason to think we can. Not even a single sense motive check. He could have been lying about the pregnant women you know. For some reason some of us seem to believe TempDM won't fucking kill us if we just rush through things into a trap.

Yeah, all this talk about honor, but he's never mentioned seppuku if he fails in a mission.

OH WAIT. Honor is a product of a culture (and usually it seems to be promoted by the people in power as a way to help them stay in power). Different cultures find different things honorable.

The cult definitely followed us to where we're currently hiding her. We should check on her, make sure she's okay.

Also, we should do something that we've been neglecting for a while now: THANK HER. Seriously, she's helping us even though we've done nothing but bring her misery.

Hell no - DnD is insane about alignment, contradicting itself within the same paragraph. Then there'e the Book of Vile Darkness (sticks and stones may break my bones, but whips and chains excite me) and the Book of Exalted Good (Furries, Fundamentalism and Fallacies, oh my!) both of which are terrible - though with some excellently powerful spells and items.

    I like Kytons as well.

Code of Conduct for Paladins of Heironeous

    Codex of Honor
A righteous warrior always observes the rules of honorable warfare. The tenets of honor and chivalry are to be upheld even in the face of enemies that do not grant the same respects.

The ends do not justify the means.

Lethal force is not always the best option for dealing with evil.

Be careful of who one associates with, the subtle influence of less righteous companions has been the downfall of many a noble warrior. A righteous warrior never associates with those he knows to be of questionable character

For those who don't know, Kytons are fantastic monsters - I can't remember if their stats are up to par, but that's no issue - the modular enhancements makes them really versatile.

Think the Xenomorph, then make it a Demon which can possess modular organs, the best of which can grant incorporeality at will.

...actually it'd be pretty cool to absorb one in this thread - albiet unlikely and fantastically dangerous.

I'll shelve that till we track down a Choker.

First of all, I am also a bit upset by the reveal of Jack's monsterdom to Gaul. But not to the point of anger.

Second, Gaul is no paladin. He is not bound by paladin codes. He has little to none divine power.
    Why?
Because in this setting Heironeous and Hextor had a fight, and Hextor lost, but Heironeous was also lamed by the fight. He is no longer a deity in the mechanical sense. In 3.5e term, Heironeous would probably be a Vestige.

    Deal with it.

What irks me are the people who shout "idiot!" and "waifu!" whenever Gaul or Claire get mentioned. Seriously, having friends and allies is a good thing. Lets us be multiple places, get multiple things done (unless you want us copying books and making amulets on OUR time), and makes us not a one-dimensional boring dude.

I wonder if those people whining are the sort who get scared about letting people close to them in real life.

It would help if people would stop fucking around with every little thing that crosses our path. We could have been out of this lousy city several threads ago, but people just had to fuck around in the sewers, and the fuck around some more with the cult. Pisses me right the fuck off.
    >> Anonymous 11/13/10(Sat)03:12 No.12780356
    >>12780298

Yeah, at any given level we can expect to hit well above our weight, which is really important because without a party to back us up we're effectively 4 levels lower when it comes to adventuring.

Once we grab a few casters and/or mobility related powers, we can start hunting specific prey off of the various lists we've made.

Getting Claire to research interesting monsters is a start on that as well. Hiring mercenaries, whom we then eat is another.

Fuck, I'd forgotten that - I was halfway through a post explaining just how this would completely change things for us and enable so much more.

I've noticed that utter cowardice is a common trend in /tg/ quests - it's happened in a few that I ran.

The worst kind of cowardice, too. It's not just "oh shit run run run", it's "haha bitch now you're mine and there's nothing you can--oh wait you can fight? fuck that, run!". It's like there's a bunch of people who were bullied in grade school and now exhibit the same mentality. Oh, wait.

To be fair, when we did go out I don't recall that we actually managed to find the werebear. Instead we got treed by a pack of "pygmy wolves" which, if Gaul is to be believed, may have in fact just been wild dogs. Which is really embarrassing.
    >> Anonymous 11/13/10(Sat)03:29 No.12780507
    >>12780466
Not only is it another instance of cowardice that we got treed, but we went out after the werebear DAYS later. Hardly a surprise that we didn't find it. As an intelligent creature, that's the thing you need to hunt down when you have a lead IMMEDIATELY or just write off as a lost opportunity.
    >> Anonymous 11/13/10(Sat)11:22 No.12782990
Personally it is my mission to corrupt Claire until she is a shadow of her former self. The first thing I want her to do is lead someone to us so we can feed on him. Next she'll starting killing people herself for me.
My end goal is to make her an Alienist.
