    >as of tomorrow at noon, I have 42 days to really hammer out my setting/rpg. FUCK YEAR WINTER BREAK!!

You look over Sansas report again. Nearly doubling your prisoner count, wiping the enemy from the southmost leg of the front, scant few losses taken. She spoke truly, you did well. "Yes, yes we did Sansa." you reply reaching over and yanking her from her chair and onto your lap. "You however, my mad aid, nearly gave me a heart attack during the battle." you add.

"No more mad than you at Khalless trial." she replies playfully "Though I am curious of a few things, if you dont mind humoring me." Sansa replies, curiosity in her voice.

"Whats on your mind then, sansa?" you reply amiably

"What do you think will become of all of our captives? I doubt Stant will want to give us anything after costing him three sons..." she asks.

"If their lord will not pay their ransom their families might be able to. And if they are not freed through their families purses, as you know unransomed prisoners are fair meat for the arena or tracks. I'm sure they wont be on our hands for too terribly long." you reply honestly.

"You arent thinking of starting your own gladiatorial franchise, are you?" the raven haired soldier chuckles out.

"But of course not, though I certainly cannot speak for Janos. I did give him freedom to expand my wealth in whatever way he sees fit." you reply honestly.

"On that subject, what of the Stant brothers? Who do you think is behind the deaths?"
    >> Anonymous 12/13/10(Mon)21:24 No.13142632
Idea. Let's send Jayne back to Dragonsreach to resupply and buy new Uursan. Since we are starting a new campaign hopefully we get more campaign funds to give her to do so. If not, well, we can use some personal funds and tell her it's an "investment in both of our futures" wink wink. Now, this is a two-pronged plan. The first is we help secure her services almost exclusively in the future from a business sense as well as a romantic one. Second, she's a career soldier and a noble, so when she gets back there we have her spread news of our glorious and crushing victories against the monstrous Lord Stant, who had previously easily defeated three maniples. Get her to spread the word of our triumphs around the city, and with the bad news coming from the north people will eat it up. We will be a hero.

Next, our mercs. We should tell them both that they have a choice. We will allow them to take their earnings and leave for Dragonsreach immediately should they wish to, or stay on with us for the following:

Raiders: We will allow them to recruit any man that can ride from the captured mercenaries, and provide them the unheard-of benefit of choosing a warhorse from captured horses for each man. This will save them tens of thousands of coins, as warhorses are expensive. Indeed, these are expensive and well trained warhorses from the Uurlanthian army, far superior to their normal ones. They will then stay on and train those men until we need them in battle.

Rapidriders: Since they are both elven and ride exotic mounts, we cannot make the same offer to them. Instead, we say that we will continue to only use them for scouting and running down fleeing troops, and if they stay on then at the end of the campaign we will write him a personal commendation saying that his services were invaluable assets to this campaign and his unit an excellent company of mercenaries and sign our name to it. This should be worth far more than gold, as he can show it to anyone wishing to hire his unit and have the validation of an Imperial Commander backing him.

It seems that Khalless might have been working for the same men who killed the Stant brothers. It is likely they are trying to take over Uurlanth through subterfuge just as they were trying to take over the Empire through force with Khalless. We will need to be extra wary of spies and implement pass phrases.

"I honestly have no idea at this point beyond people related to what happened in the north. They had the same emblem as some of those raiders and the slavers we fought earlier this month. It seems like they're pulling strings behinds the scenes and it's something we'll definitely need to look into. I have Finian going over Khalless' letters but perhaps we should scour his tomes for that symbol we've been coming across. I had hoped to translate more of Khalless' letters but I believe I should inform our superiors that there may be more to Khalless than a minor rebellion."

You set the knife you found buried in Gaericks chest out and set it on the table "Whoever was behind it, they are large and organized. This symbol was found on some of Khalless' servants, as well as Stant soldiers. We need to keep an eye out for more of them." you state, feeling Sansa tense ever so slightly as she looks the blade over.

"Thats... troubling. What do you suppose we will do while we wait for the time to set out for Uurlanth?" Sansa asks, settling back into you , now that the knife is on the table again.

I made a to do list based on ideas from the previous thread, as well as my own thoughts:

    1. Give Sansa an affectionate kiss and loving scolding
    2. Report situation to High Commander at Stone Fort and others on the Southern line; mention the involvement of a mysterious group using peculiar markings, previously encountered; tell Nomz we’ll send assistance immediately
    3. Setup base defenses
    4. Hold a celebration for the men
    5. Expand prisoner camp
    6. Prepare fortress to act as staging area
    7. Hold staff meeting
    8. Ask around about the mysterious hammer and anvil symbols
    9. See to Gaerick’s body
    10. Assemble assistance force for Commander Nomz
    11. Send for reinforcements to replenish our forces
    12. Back-massages for all of Justinian’s ladies
    13. Inform Laelith of Finian’s efforts in translating Khalless’ tomes as well as for the need for her assistance in teaching Lena…while giving her back massage
    14. Steal Laelith’s robes

I have to wonder how long we're going to keep Justinian on a dry spell with so many completely willing females about. I personally vote for spending quality time with Laelith after we talk to her about her feelings now that she is free from Khalless and/or get her face and tattoos fixed. That's going to be an emotional talk and could easily lead into a pleasant, comforting, and engaging night for both her and Justinian. And I say Laelith first because she's the one we need to spend the most time on and who could be hurt the most mentally and emotionally by the multiple consorts thing.

...wait, shit, don't say that. Though after this campaign, we ARE having a goddamned orgy with all our ladies at once, if it's the last thing we do.

Anyway, no celebration. Or perhaps a very small one. The war's not over, and we're expected to spearhead the next assault- that means we get to be extra-professional.

I'm not even sure we know where to look for them, or if we do if they'd be anywhere near.

In any case, once festivities are over, let's have another staff meeting (Yes, the third one I've asked for, I know.) and get the others preparing the camp to act as the staging point (setting up the defenses, since we can't be too careful now.), and ensuring that the prisoner accommodations are sufficient while we wait for the relief force.

Also, we'll want to organize a taskforce to assist Commander Nomz. I was thinking:

    a. -454th Legionary
    Cornelius Hoursch
    b. -99th Hunters
    Aurelius Caspius
    c. -50th Dwarven Scouts
    Finian Gaurush
    d. -Impetus Marauders (Elf)
    Aeristus Beztia
    e. -Cornwall Mercenaries

How about we wait until Nomz gets back to us before we start planning on what to send? For all we know, he could be having an arcanist problem like that other commander, or the terrain is crap for heavy infantry or he needs a lot of range support.

I'm more in favour of seeing if Khalless' tomes have anything on that symbol we keep seeing. That or asking Janos some questions on like why he switched so easily, if he's religious and if he noticed anything odd about Morwayne before he was captured/in the last few months. We should also ask about Stant's heir and get some information on him and interrogate the prisoners and try to find out where Lord Stant went and if he'll be back soon with mercenary reinforcements just like the other maniples are facing. We may think we're done with Stant but until we deal with Lord Stant himself, we may not be done at all.

I'm not comfortable of sending troops that are going to be in the thick of it when we advance. We need them rested.

We should consider if the mercs want to break off or not. If they are, we can send those to Normz before they head back to Dragonreach. For now though, we should wait for the update from Normz.

Regarding the river, we need to speak with Janos about its breadth and find a good crossing. With our lead time, it should be possible to prepare rapid bridging equipment and bring it along.

Sansa turns around in your lap, so that she is fully facing you, smiling she throws her arms around your neck "I suppose that will do, but at the end of this campaign you owe me for going slow this once." she replies, pulling your head down so that she can plant a kiss on your forehead. We are training two life elementalists right here in camp, and frankly we have the highest concentration of cutting-edge elementalism in our maniple anywhere in the empire, as far as I know. Just gonna throw this one out there. Our men are why we did well, not just our good planning. We need to have two days of leave for everyone. Still have guard duty and what not, not letting down our guard too much, but we need to let them recuperate while we are waiting on our new men. Then we can detail men to the making of the fort larger as a staging point. Which we haven't named yet. I vote for Eagle's Liberty.

Eagle's Liberty: Eagle meaning a lot of things ranging from Janos Stant, the valkyries, or the embodiment of "freedom" and the predatory nature of the eagle. Liberty obviously ranging from "freeing" the valkyries from captivity (dohohohoho), freeing Janos from his family, and us liberating the slaves as well as it being the staging point for liberating the entire valley area anyways.

Keeping their talents hidden? But how is that even possible- elementalism wasn't even around until quite recently, when all the gods and arcana and what have you started coming back. If it had been, people would have started fountaining fire and lightning all over the place and we wouldn't have belief issues with the people back home. No one can be THAT much more experienced than our people because there simply hasn't been that much time in which anyone could have been gaining experience.

Further, if they've been hiding their powers they haven't been using them, and therefore growing more powerful/skilled. Ours are- they're pushing themselves constantly, and further enhancing the growth of their powers by the use of an arcana specifically designed for that purpose. They can stop hearts at fifty paces after less than a year. It's utterly ridiculous to think that some person who's been concealing their abilities for some indeterminate amount of time would be able to match that level of power and skill.

You hand Janos the knife, he stops in his tracks as he looks it over. "Where did you find this?" he asks, worriedly.

You open the door to the cell you had Gaericks body placed in, behind you, you can hear the knife drop "Burried in your brothers chest, at the hand of his battlefield physician. The Leg wounds are from my men, I had intended to ransom him, but..."

Janos face is twisted into a mask of rage "Did you at least kill her bastard then?" he asks, slowly walking into the room.

The only way I can see this justifiable is by taking the people who aren't going to be ransomed, then take them as a troop and enter them into the gladiatorial arena in our company. Promising that if they survive 10 fights or whatever is the standard for those in the fights that we had to go through to be a commander but after such they have to stay in our maniple in a specific unit for at LEAST a year to earn true freedom. Is that doable Pax? We need to come off as kind but still within reason of POW's treatment if we try it.

There is more than one way to get someones trust, as there is more than one way to get a fighter, pulling from POWs is an option, maybe a good way to get a small start for the gladiator portion, but 100% of the skirmishing auxiliary forces dont need to be past foes.

The Gladiator portion is also a slightly good idea, as it gives way to smaller battles, not always rectangles and squares impacting one another until they break or shatter. It's also a way for Pax to handle something if he's not feeling up to a Big battle.

But to start, House Stand fighters could work, for a small test batch as options for other fighters are looking into. a small merc band is way in dept, we could buy their dept off of them, in exchange for working off 50% or so of the cost in the arena. almost like a Contract to them. Sounds good, and we should ask confirmation from Janos that this cult uses the hammer and anvil as their emblem.
If so, and we could prove this somehow with evidence beyond just a testimonial from a turncoat, then we would have evidence that a force in Uurlanth was assisting Khalless in sedition against the Empire.
Which means that the Empire will then be able to search internally for any evidence of this same cult and eliminate it before it can do any harm.

I don't really like it either but I'm first trying to understand the reasoning behind it.

Gladitorial units as skirmishers will occupy a niche role in our army that our other units can fulfill. Furthermore, good gladiators will use flashy moves, getting them killed fast. Replenishing their ranks will take longer as we can't just induct normal soldiers into their ranks. They will also be on our payroll, meaning an additional drain.

What do other people think of getting horses/oxen and wagons from Flumenos, buying them with any requisition money or our personal funds if necessary?

With enough wagons, we can travel much faster than on foot, and the men won't be as tired. It'll be easier to transport our heavy repeaters and any siege engines we decide to bring with us on our pillaging of the Uurlanth country-side.
And finally, we need a way to carry all of the loot we're going to plunder.

Flumenos is the closest city and an old map Pax posted said it was about 2 weeks from our position. That means getting back to the capital will take ages in comparison. We're either keeping Jayne with us as is or sending her back and I doubt she'll want to go back until her unit has been hurt more with the benefits this campaign might have to her house.

    >>13144172
Might be worth looking into. It depends how easy it'll be to get by the fort since oxen and more wagons will slow us down since Degrian won't be able to make a huge ton of the new models soon enough I assume. We'll need to look at the terrain.

With our men out of combat, they can help cut wood and do basic task under supervision while our engineers work on the finer parts. We should be able to build a good number.

A valid point. I don't expect the terrain to be a problem, this valley being mostly flat, but until we look a topographical map, we won't know.

    >>13144199
Turning our entire maniple into, what is essentially medieval motorized infantry (dragoons), would allow us to travel distances without our men being tired out from marching.
We also require a way of easily transporting the heavy repeaters for firepower superiority as we start attacking Uurlanth directly.
And finally, we will need some way of transporting pillaged loot from our raids.

Look, I appreciate that you want to save us money for many of the projects we want to start when we return to the capital. But if those arguments had won out when we were hiring additional mercenaries, we'd be in very bad straits right now.
Can you honestly say that the investment of hiring more mercs did not pan out for the best? Being stingy would have seriously hurt us during this campaign, and would likely have meant that we would need to retire from the offensive instead of being the go-ahead to plunder to our heart's content.

I personally don't like "leveled encounters" but an enormous amount of people do. And truly, it's pretty bogus when you are in a sandbox universe and the players make you go "Well, you're walking along the road and a dragon eats you." because they didn't take obvious hints. That's a strong motivation for having them fight kobolds at level 1 and gradually move up into dragonslaying, and the inns and job boards of towns only having quests that the heroes can solve.

Basically, it's not an issue of terribad or anything like that. It's just an issue of preference. And I think you are doing a good job, even if scaling difficulty is not my favorite way for a game to run. Keep up the good work!

Don't be so harsh to the new comer man.

Roman themed empire is what we are under. Odd power structure compared to Rome, but it is slightly similar. Arcane, Elementalism, and Mysticism is extremely rare and valuable, however, at the turning of the age, they are being found more and more. Also, the deities of this universe range widely, and are reminiscent of Norse mythology in my opinion but they were quiet and dormant until recently apparently. (think a few centuries, maybe more, might not be remembering correctly)

You pull one of Gaericks bodyguards aside. "Would I be correct in assuming that you wish revenge on Lady Cleophas for her bastards minions actions?" the man nods, eying you suspiciously. "What would you do for an opportunity to take that revenge?" you press.

"I'd answer some questions, assuming that your opportunity is better than a chance to join your damned empire." he replies, cautiously.

"NO, no. You see, I need a man to deliver some missives to Lord Stant. I have much apologizing to do, as one of his sons is to be tried for war crimes, and likely executed, and the second died under my protection as a prisoner. Answer my questions and I will send you, and two more of Gaericks surviving guards to deliver the letters." you propose.

"Ask away then." the guard replies, straightening his bloodstained tunic.

"I need to know where it is Lord Stant went, where the other Valkerie knights flew off to, and where the slave-drivers came from." you reply bluntly, pacing in front of the man.

"My masters Lord went to recruit mercenaries and deal with domestic matters. Morwayne sent the Valkerie knights away the night before your assault, said if we kept them around you would find some way to kill them. Holed up in his tent after doing that. The slavers were a gift from Cleophas and Bruck to Morwayne before we left on the campaign. That said, we really should tell her that what she did was reckless and we don't want her to endanger herself like that. She needs to understand that if she died on the battlefield it would hurt us, and while we understand that there is always a chance that she could... she shouldn't go around painting a target on herself like that.
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 12/14/10(Tue)01:43 No.13145851
You describe Cleophas to her "Does this accurately describe Khaless' widow?" you ask plainly.

"No, not in the least. Politicking was something she always attempted to avoid at that." Laelith responds, turning both pages.

"So, your sure that there is no connection aside from the cult tattoos?" you ask, working your hands into her shoulders.

"Th... that isnt fair" she complains, her head lolling back from the massage "and yes, aside from that there is nothing. If you were wondering about the rod, it was a mystics focus. Without it glamors become nigh impossible. Now that we have it its nothing but a plethora of gems to sell." she replies, happily

"Thats good too hear, and I'm glad that I'm able to ease this tension from you. Facing down eighty some armed men must have been daunting." you reply, finding a good sized knot to work on.

"Not at all. I was made to face worse during my travels with Khalless." she replies plainly

"Regardless of your past, were it not for Sansa I could have lost you then..." you chide Laelith, pulling her chair back from the desk "You dont need to be so reckless, Laelith." you continue, sitting next to her, clasping her hands in yours "You should trust that one of us will help you when you need it."

Laeliths face shows some conflict, as if a law she has long lived by is being called into question. "I... I will be more careful..." she finally replies, her shoulders slumping ever so slightly.

"Good" you reply, pulling her into a hug. after a few moments you place a kiss on her scarred cheek "Now, do you think you are ready to begin instructing Lena on reading this tome you are deciphering?" you ask, hopeful.

"I'm only to the middle of it, but new readers are seldom fast readers. I should be able to start today and stay ahead." she replies

    >let her go now, or do you have something else for her?

    Agreement with these two.
We trust our captains to adapt to changing circumstances on the fly, and to modify our greater plan as necessary to shifting battlefield conditions.

We had her on the torches not only because of the enemy units that we cut down, but also because their presence near us exposed our entire front line to killer elven archer fire. If we hadn't killed as many elves as we did in our initial volleys, or if they'd been more coordinated than they were (read: worse rolls for us) our line could have been decimated by more of their super-precise doom arrows. Laelith was SUPPOSED to be a solid second line of protection for literally hundreds of our men's lives, and instead she decided to go torch people for fun. And to light up the battlefield when we were relying on darkness.

So fuck her initiative, in this case she's supposed to do her JOB. If our plan was falling apart, we were in desperate straits, and she thought she could hold things together with a bit of rash action, that's one thing. Completely ignoring the plan from the very beginning of the battle when nothing's gone wrong at all? That's unprofessional and actively screwing over both our authority and our army. That's demotion-level stuff on anyone actually replaceable. We should NOT be saying that it's okay.

I'll agree to this. It was a foolish action on her part and she should have stuck to the plan. We should say that at the debriefing, but give her a heads up that we will be calling her out about it right now. Just so she doesn't feel abandoned or picked on. Tell her that we appreciate it, but we really needed that battlefield dark rather than lit up.

Also, what was that super-bright light around Sansa?

I'm not saying she should be allowed to do whatever the hell she wants and you're right at how it could of cost us a lot but at the same time, her lighting up the field like that likely distracted the hell out of their archers and she took out a chunk of their mercenaries. Should she of done what we wanted? Yes, although I'm assuming part of why she didn't was bad command rolls on our part and all. Should we tell her to never change plans on the fly depending on the situation and only listen to our plans? I wouldn't agree there but you I do see what you mean.

I just don't think we should be so harsh as to stop her from ever doing her own thing in battle. Her doing her own actions in battle has helped us before like when we fought Khalless near the end and she torched one of their entire barricades if I remember right.

"What do you know of mysticism, aside from the side effects? Are they a given?" you ask her, releasing the elf from your grasp.

"A skilled mystic can create glamors about himself and others, as well as read, and sometimes even controll minds. Would you like me to translate one of the tomes on that topic after the book for Lena is finsihed?"

"Yes I would. And the side effects?" you reply, hoping that they arent universal.

"They touch all to some extent, though the madness is mere perception. Most agree that with time the urge to tell people their thoughts, or act on them before they are taken becomes too great to resist. To the mystic, everything they do makes pcomplete sense, though what the rest of the world sees is clearly a madman." she explains patiently, not looking away from you.

"While I am grateful for your actions, I will need to reprimand you for the way you went against the plan in the last battle, I'm afraid." you inform the elf, showing enough sadness to make sure she doesnt get the wrong message.

"I, I understand. I simply... it seemed so much like before. On the battlefield, alone, a great number of armed and armored men rushing at me... I forgot myself, and I apologize." she confides, a haunted look in her eyes.

    >bad command rolls
If our subcommanders will ignore our initial orders, made before the battle started, because they can't hear us shouting to remind them in the middle of the battle... then we should fire them and get new subcommanders.

    >Should we tell her to never change plans on the fly depending on the situation and only listen to our plans?
There is a huge difference between that and "Hey, the battle just started... What was the plan again? Oh, it doesn't matter, I'll just throw as much fire as I can at the closest guys and everything will be great!"

Our subcommanders should feel justified in discarding the plan or otherwise taking radical action if:
-They gain information we don't have during the battle which they must act upon for the good of the maniple
-Things start going horribly wrong and we are unable to give orders
-The battle has dragged on long enough that the original plan is out of date and responses to changing circumstances are needed

This was none of those. This was a turn one 'fuck your plan Justinian I have my own shit to do'.

    >I just don't think we should be so harsh as to stop her from ever doing her own thing in battle.
    Indeed we shouldn't.

What we should do is be so harsh that she'll never do her own thing in battle WHEN WE HAVE TOLD HER TO DO SOMETHING ELSE VERY SPECIFIC. Initiative is fine and dandy until people stop following orders- then you don't have an army, you have a mob. Mobs have plenty of initiative, and it doesn't give them shit.

Puhleze. We must do EACH of them justice, as is befitting an officer and a gentleman.

Gonna be hard to really give them the justice they deserve if you're going for the political game. It basically stacks Jayne as your choice unless we somehow come across another female noble on our return to the capital. I suppose it is time we get introduced to new noble houses since I don't think Jayne will be able to join us on anymore campaigns after this.

Convincing people in the Empire that the gods are back, without us fully devoting ourselves to a god and thus getting their divine gifts easier, is going to be difficult. So unless we get future boons soon and try to use them to prove the gods exist, the political marriage will be a feasible option just for advancing our career before we reach that level.

I don't know man, I get this protective urge about Belatrix. The man is swine. I still want Lena in our harem but everyone else wants to foster romance for everyone else. I'm fine with that, since we are virtually the walking incarnation of the Love Goddess on earth at this point and scoring major points with her. Think about it:

    1. Hooked up Cornelius and Jayne's Sister.
    2. Romancing 4 women, three of them with special conditions that would make the love goddess like us for doing so.
    3. Janos and his lovely bodyguard.
    4. Wulf and Lena.
    5. Belatrix's Folly. At some point we are likely going to need to intervene and help them out just because it's Aurelius.

It has been a while since we talked to her and while we told Raynha to convey our thanks for saving Laelith we should really try to do that in person.

Also with all the romance, matchmaking, and slave saving going on I imagine she's pretty happy with us. And knowing that we plan to put temples devoted to her (and all the gods) back in order with our own funds when we get back to Dragonsreach will probably endear her even more.
