    Dear /tg/

I have a Christmas present for you. To thank you for the many years of laughter, creativity, funny stupidity, inspiration, image threads, quests and memes, I’ve put together something that a few people here have been asking for: a Blame! RPG. /tg/ is an amazing source of homebrew games and cool ideas, and your efforts have inspired me to finally finish a game that was 4 years in the making. Well, technically 3 years and 11 months of useless font tweaking and page layout OCD which distracted me and 1 month of actual writing and picture pasting. So here is my game:

    BLAM! the RPG
    http://www.mediafire.com/?sy72beafdwmkngw

This is a second draft and still needs a bit of work, but I’d say it’s 90% done. The rules are intentionally very, very simple. If you would like to contribute to it you’re welcome to do so, or criticize any mistakes. However, please keep in mind the following: I don’t really care much for game mechanics, PC balance or modeling of statistical probabilities. The story and world are much more interesting to me and that’s where I focus my energy. The rules may be completely broken. None of my RPG friends likes Blame! enough to test them out, so if you’d be willing to playtest them for me I’d appreciate it.

For those of you not familiar with the manga upon which this is based, you can read it here: http://www.mangafox.com/manga/blame/

For some atmospheric music and video to set the mood, check out the Blame logs:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHoXnfpz-rk&feature=related

When I have enough feedback from you and others to finalize the written draft, I’ll do a better design & layout similar to what I previewed a month back, so the final game product should look semi-professional. In conclusion: /tg/ gets shit done.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy your new game of BLAM!

Why does it skip from Level 4 to 6 in the list of safeguards?

Also level six looks nothing like Sanakan. (the iconic l6 safeguard)

It does have long epochs of silence at the beginning and the end, but the middle parts have quite a lot of dialogue.

Part of the fun is the mystery and lack of context. My imagination always exploded trying to fill in the massive gaps in the narrative. Give it a second try.

Perhaps I will, the RPG certainly paints an interesting picture. Sort of a Paranoia with less "loltraitor" and more "literally endless, ever expanding torture labyrinth where humanity is left to rot".

    I'm intrigued.

Wikipedia says Sanakan is a level six. But I can't find the exact page. You have her first form listed as a level 8 though.

Also, level one safeguard should be called Exterminators.

Thanks for making this though. I wanted to make a BLAME RPG a long time ago but never did.

    >level one safeguard should be called Exterminators.

I know they were referred to as that but I felt it was more appropriate to have labels that reflected their behaviour or shape, and the Level Ones run around on all fours. That can be changed if people strongly object to it.

Within a game framework I think Sanakan would have fluctuated in level, and I didn't want to describe the Safeguard using unique characters. They're a monolithic organization and doubtless have millions of standard models.

The denizens and locations are not meant to be exhaustive, merely sampling some of the possibilities. If anyone wants to feel free to write up more SG, SL or unique characters. There are half a dozen SG I didn't include yet.

Also I'd make the Gatekeeper level eight. Remember this thing required Sanakan and Killy together to kill it.

As for the Menschegager? It's a clone of killy and the thing that finally killed him. It should be much higher than 4.

I made the Man hunter only Level 4 because a) he went down pretty easy, b) he caught Killy in an ambush at the end of his strength, c) I needed some lower level SG to fill out the ranks. They can't all be high level, and the ranks are not clearly delineated in the manga anyway. Artistic license. ::)

    Blame! is pretty great.

I think the reason I avoided it for years was the name - "Blame!" sounds like... I don't know what the fuck it sounds like, but not good, and definitely not like the quiet, lonely, almost mystical trip through the labyrinth it is. It's like Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou and Gantz had a kid that inherited the slick-black looks of the father and the quiet melancholy of the mother.

I heard that the name is some kind of a translation/transliteration error that never got fixed and it should be "Blam!", the onomatopoeia, in reference to Killy's Big Fucking Gun. It bothers me severely that they didn't fix that at any point.

Here's how I'd do the list.

    Level 1, Exterminator. (common)
Level 2, Infiltrator. (The kid in volume 1)
Level 3, Siren. (Hacking type, tries to mind control Killy before his fight with the Gatekeper in volume 10)
Level 4, Hunter. (Kills Killy in volume 10)
Level 5, Behemoth (giant type, Supports Sanakan in volume 2, huge GBE)
    Level 6, Commander (Sanakan)
Level 7, Gatekeper (fights killy in volume 10, really tall and makes a cloak around itself)
Level 8, Judge (Almost Killed sanakan in volume 10, fights by rebuilding the structure around it)
Level 9, Angel of Death (Cibo)
    >> Anonymous 12/15/10(Wed)21:13 No.13166169
Blame! gives an incredible feeling of claustrophiba, desolation and exploration all at the same time. The protagonist is both alminghty (immortal with hax broken gun) and yet... I'm not quite sure how to put it, but the megastructure is so vast that even someone with his powers may never complete his journey.

They spent like a month riding an elevator (passes by in one or two pages), that's just chilling, the protagonist is very much not human, yet he appeals to human dreams.

That's a good list. Like I said, my list is not exhaustive and I had considered some of these but hadn't gotten around to it.

    >Level 3, Siren.
Yup, I thought of her, but I figured she'd be a higher level netwar model since she (maybe) stopped Killy in his tracks at the peak of his power.

    >Level 5, Behemoth
Yes, the Giger-esque giant, thought of it too. I'll add him soon.

    >Level 8, Judge
That would be Exterminator, First Class? I couldn't figure out if it would be more or less powerful than the Level 9, the text seems kind of contradictory. On the one hand it stated that the Level 9 is the most powerful SG, but then the "Judge" disables Sanakan and Killy in a way that seems even more powerful. What do you guys think?
    >> Anonymous 12/15/10(Wed)21:27 No.13166306
    >>13166169

The thing with Killy is that while it becomes pretty clear early on that's he's superhuman in many ways, and holds a trump card in form of GBE, he's still far from invincible in his world. There's many scenes in the series where he plain gets his ass kicked by people or machines better than him. And the higher-rating safeguards have GBEs of their own.

I think it's that the Exterminator Level 1 is more defense oriented. Taking GBE hits and has powerful shields. While the level is mostly offense and nukes things.

Exterminators are probably just Automata while the Safeguard Agents are actual people.

Apparently he just "forgot" that he was tough in the beginning and got rebooted twice.

Which pretty much means Nihei may not have thought the story would go so far and have such powerful enemies at the beginning and he had to upgrade killing in a fashion that would make sense.

When he fights the Exterminator Level 1 the guy has a Dune(the first movie) style shield and everything.

Yes, Shibo transcribed Seu's DNA onto herself while Davinel was making the provisional connection. Davinel downloaded a Level 9 SG which merged with Shibo to form the Death Angel.

However, this seems contradicted by the later statement that the Egg/Core is the product of two females, unless Seu was a female.

Not a duel, not as I imagined it. Speed is only one aspect of total combat ability. It would be more an exchange of shots, with the winner getting the best shot in.

But it's flexible, the system is supposed to be so abstract that you can present it any way: a duel, an exchange of multiple attacks or a flurry of hits.

As a starting PC you only get one module. NPC silicon life get the ones listed automatically. If a GM is not concerned about balance then you could start with all of the above.

Yeah, I think I read somewhere that Exterminators, while all level one safeguards, have there own rating that goes backwards.
This makes everything much more complicated though.

Nehi is not a list guy. He likes drawing crazy monsters, but there is no codified biastary of all the diffrent types. While this is good for the anarchic Silicon Creatures. For Safeguard this becomes much harder.

Level 1 safeguard: Exterminators, Many types.
Level 2 safeguard: Gains independent action and infection darts.
Level 3 safeguard: Gains Shape changing and human impersonation abilities.
Level 4 safeguard: Gains Infowar abilities.
Level 5 safeguard: Better regeneration and flight abilities.
Level 6 safeguard: Gains Graviton Beam emitter
    Level 7 - 8: More powerups.
    Level 9: Hax tier.

Yeah the exterminators have their own level or power independent from the safeguard levels, which as you say was backwards (level 1 exerminators being comparable to very high level other safeguards). If i recall you can see some variations of the safeguards here and there. For example what you desegnated as Hounds and ferrets.

Simply put, the exterminators need their own list.

And thanks for making this, not sure how i feel about the system yet but its a great resource none the less.

Quick question. In Blame!, it's hinted that GBE's draw power directly from their weilders, isn't it? What with Killy being all low-powered after going for so long without an energy refill. Compare him before and after Sanakan fixes his faulty programs. Or maybe it draws power from convertion towers, and Killys messed up software (or maybe hardware, lots of blunt trauma there) might have made it difficult for him to draw power from it?

Another abortive Blame! RPG project ranks Safeguards like this:

There are two parallel tiers of Safeguard organization. Nonautonomous units under the direct control of the command program fall under the Exterminator protocol, of which Class One is the highest. Autonomous constructs, granted a personality and a degree of freedom to act, fall under the Agent protocol, of which level 9 is the highest. An Agent has clearance to download and control a number of Exterminator entities while on assignment.
Safeguard Exterminator Class Zero/00 (Exterminator base class-Clawed)
Safeguard Exterminator Class Zero/01 (Transmission Entity, large constructs that download in response to attempts to breach Megastructure level barriers as seen in v2)
Safeguard Exterminator Class Zero/02 (Large Exterminator as seen in Noise)
Safeguard Exterminator Class Zero/03 (Twin Exterminator as seen in Noise, equipped with spine launcher/cutting tail)
    Safeguard Exterminator Class Zero/04 (Watchman)
Safeguard Exterminator Class Zero/05 (Giant Exterminator/Transport/Exterminator Download Terminal unit)
Safeguard Exterminator Class One (Sterilizer/Destroyer as seen in v9)
Safeguard Agent Level 1-3 (Unknown, not encountered - May be child type SG's)
Safeguard Agent Level 4 (Dhomochevsky type - Basic Biped w/skinsuit - Not cleared for GBE use)
Safeguard Agent Level 5 (Killy Clone - Basic Biped w/skinsuit - Cleared for GBE use)
Safeguard Agent Level 6 (Sanakan type - Shapeshifter Biped - Cleared for nanite modification of own body form)
    Safeguard Agent Level 7 (Unknown)
    Safeguard Agent Level 8 (Unknown)
Safeguard Level 9 (Angel - Doomsday Device - Cleared for highest level matter conversion and nanomachine manipulation)

Against the President he was on low power. Most likely he didn't even know how to activate the higher levels of the GBE. Then Sanakan came along and tried to restore him as an Agent, which only worked partially, re-awakening his more advanced functions and systems, but without restoring his memory (I think we can assume that whoever erased his memory, which is stated by Dhomos partner (fuck if I remember the name) to have happened), was the Authority or at least someone who knew what he/she/it was doing. And therefore knew how to make it so that even the Safeguard couldn't restore it.
Also, AFTER he's upgraded, he needs to draw power from dead Exterminators, yeah. But after ANOTHER upgrade he can use more power than that without linking up with anything else, and still fire even more poeerful blasts like it's no big deal.
So either the GBE draws power from an external power source, and Killy was upgraded to have better acces to it. OR it generates its own power, but you need the right hardware and software to unlock it and survive using it. OR it draws power from the user, and it becme more effective just because Killy powered up.

[Text log found among ruins. Apparently of human origin, religous in nature.]

    >Text Log: 1300 Hours - 487th Segment of the 5,413th Revolution

As part of my training to join the Clergy, I have left the Holy City Arakeen and made my way into the Ghost Lands. The buildings here are thin and emaciated, like starving people, but long dead. I hope that I do not disturb their rest and cause them to collapse, especially on me. There is no light here, and I can barely see more than fifty meters with my lantern. Praise be to my Holy Form granted by The

Creator for giving me the ability to make this pilgrimage. I will soon make camp and prepare my Ritual of Cleansing. Just thing, only a few hundred hours and I can join the Clergy, as I have dreamt of and prepared for since I was small!

    >Text Log: 1378 Hours
This was not as exciting as I thought it would be. My rations are generous and I have plenty for my journey, and as always I am pious and attentive to the rituals and prayer, but I feel restless. The Ghost Lands are vast, and I feel my curiosity biting at me to go out and explore. The Elders advised against it. Is this a test? Surely to indulge ones curiosity is still to praise the Holy Human Form? Perhaps I shall go and explore after my next sleep cycle.

    >Text Log: 1390 Hours
I have set out from my base camp into the ruins of the Ghost Lands. The old tales say that they were inhabited once by another group of humans, although it is said that their society broke apart due to sin and depravity, and the survivors have long since left. I am currently in a residential space of some sort - a bed, clothing containers, a chest filled with toys - I believe it is, or was, a child's room. There is a doll on the bed... I find it cute. A caricature of a woman, large eyes and broad smile, made of some kind of stuffed fabric. Perhaps the young ones will like it for when I return.
    >> CyberDungeonQuestDM !G8.AisJTC2 12/16/10(Thu)16:19 No.13177358
    >Text Log: 1392 Hours
The isolation is getting to me just a bit, I think. I hear scratching noises in the distance. The heartbeat of these lands, perhaps, with the passage of time and wind? Or just my imagination?

I put the doll away in my pack, along with some other little goodies I found. The little ones in the Children's House will like them, I'm sure.

I feel my exhaustion seeping into my bones, but I must go about my prayer and ritual. Sleep can wait.

    >Text Log: Unknown
It wasn't the heartbeat of the Ghost Lands. It wasn't my imagination. Fiends from the Far West came at me during one of my sleep cycles... a behemoth, an abomination of some sort of false flesh and machine, like a puppet corpse, snatched me up in its claws. I shouted in terror, I admit, and could only struggle against its grip. It wheezed irregularly, as if having a fit... I think it was laughing at me.

I spat every obscenity I could recall from my times with the laborers, quoted every psalm and passage I had memorized to try and ward off the aberration.

Still, it only laughed, tossing me into the air and smacking me into a wall. Praise be to my Holy Form granted by the Creator that I did not break. It spoke, it's monstrous voice some electronic mess, with a strange accent not from any human tongue.
    >> CyberDungeonQuestDM !G8.AisJTC2 12/16/10(Thu)16:21 No.13177385
"Mouthy little thing, innit?" the laughing abomination had said. 'It,' this thing had called me!

Another voice from the darkness answered it, in agreement. A thing stepped into the light of my lantern, this one bearing more resemblance to the Holy Form, only to be all the more horrifying. Dressed modestly in a suit of sorts and a hat, a cane in hand, the creature, who the laughing one referred to as 'Dok' or somesuch, leered at me from black pits which I assume were its eyes... soulless and evil.

The laughing one picked me up, and I could not resist its grip, my body damaged by its assault. My hair felt wet and sticky, and I sensed that the bones of my arms and chest were damaged.

The suited one tapped me on the face with its cane, and asked me of my home... he knew of Arakeen. I spat in its face, or tried to... the laughing one squeezed me tighter, and a cracking sound prompted another bout of wheezy laughter. 'Dok' waved its cane, telling it to stop. I am ashamed to say that I felt a moment of gratitude for the thing.

Then its cane lit up with a spark and I was in darkness again.

When I awoke, I could not move. I was on a slab of some sort, deep in one of the buildings of the Ghost Lands, now a coven of some sort to the abominations, a place for their witchery. Black as pitch, a carapice of false flesh. 'Dok' stood before me, hands on its cane, leering at me as before.

"Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste," the thing said, and I scoffed at its attempt to identify itself as a 'man'... only to find I could not speak, my jaw felt numb, as did the rest of me. "Doctor Cialsok is my name. The laughing paluka you saw before is Hroddard. We are Silicon Creatures."
    >> CyberDungeonQuestDM !G8.AisJTC2 12/16/10(Thu)16:23 No.13177423
I gave it the hardest glare I could produce, and that only seemed to amuse it.

"Our peoples are not so different, you know," it said.

I find it strange how much clearer my memory is now, how exact... no matter.

It continued, "My brethren believe that our biology, based on silicon and machine, is the pinnacle of evolution. That human's carbon based past is, as they say, 'old hat' and needs to go. Just as you hold your dated, fleshly form sacred, my brethren see it as base and something to be swept away by time and progress.

"Your own devotion to your fleshliness amuses me. My own research into the past indicates that you are more machine than humanity was in its own past... not that you'll believe me, of course." I worried - was it reading my mind? Silicon witchery? Or had there been others before me who had fallen victim to this fiend?

"Now, I believe in interspecies relations. I truly do. That is why I have given you a gift, little creature. And I'm going to let you go." Cialsok leaned towards me, burning little dots in its black pits of eyes shining red. It ran a bony, black finger down my face... false flesh on mine... the thought made me want to shiver and vomit. "Goodbye, little creature."

    A snap, and darkness again.

Looking damn good so far. My only critique at this point is the character creation system needs more meat and more structure. I'd personally detail the archetypes more and make them separate from the denizens section. Digging through fluff-text to get to the lists of modules in each archetype was a bit problematic.

Listing the archetypes with min/max stats as guidelines, a list of starting modules and perhaps some way of starting with equipment outside of GM permission would be a good next step.

But outside of character creation stuff this is looking brilliant so far. Can't wait for the next release/upgrade. With a bit more tightening up in character creation it should quite playable. Great work so far OP, you are awesome.

Trying to make a character and am wondering about the "if the archetype has a selection of modules you may choose one".

Does this mean that the Safeguard gets all the basic modules plus a single choice from the secondary list, or does it only get to choose a single one in total (or does it buck the trend and follow what it says in the description and get the base plus two)?

Also, when distributing points to Structure, Energy and Ghost you seem to get a lot more than most archetypes even though it says you should be weaker. Are PCs meant to get less than 100 points or is the text about being weaker an artifact of an older re-write?

Ran a few playtest combats and noticed that it was incredibly hard to damage anything at higher levels even when wielding GBEs.

Had a guy with a GBE and a modest Blast of 20 (starting character level) against an automaton wielding an assault rifle. After several rounds of combat firing a gun that can collapse chunks of terrain the automaton suffered no damage at all.

It seems like Resist being rated as an ability means that it can too easily negate damage to the point that it can be impossible to damage something unless you outclass it by more than 20 points (depending on resist). Add in armour and I'm having troubles seeing how things can get damaged at all.

And considering the average structure things possess combat will drag on quite a bit unless you use a whole lot of mooks. Against bosses combat may well go one for many many rounds before one side simply runs out of energy.

This could set things up to basically become Exalted style mote-wars where no one does anything cool until the other side is tired out. As it is the length of combat is limited more by energy than by the relative skill and power of either side.

I'm thinking there needs to be a stat derived from Resist to represent damage reduction (and have armour add to that instead). Since the damage range between two equal combatants will tend to be within just a few points considering the system there may need to be a lot of attention paid to the basic system to prevent boring stalemates from occurring.

Great work on compiling the information but I think the basic system needs a lot more work until it results in a satisfying game. But I guess that's what playtesting is for.

So, just finished a preliminary readthrough of the rules. Good stuff, OP. I was going to run a Rifts game set in the BLAME! megastructure, but then I realized that the Rifts rules suck.

A few things, though. I personally would like to see a section about the Conversion Towers and how important they are to various technologies. You mention them a few times, but you don't actually share what they are.

The central dice mechanic is decent, but the difficulty scales a little bit too fast. I'd recommend adding "exploding dice", where if the character rolls 18+, they can roll another dice and add it to the total. If they roll a ten, then they continue adding dice until they fail to roll a ten. This simulates critical successes, and allows characters a shot at actions that, in the current game, would be impossible.

One of my favorite elements of BLAME! was always the pure, existential horror that the characters have to face. That Killy faces it all stone faced makes him somewhat... eerie. If you don't want to add a sanity track, you can have extreme situations deal Ghost damage.

I'd do something similar to Unseen Armies; you have one or more "sanity" gauges. Failing a roll against an insanity trigger causes an immediate freakout and puts a "failed" mark on the gauge. Passing a roll adds a "hardened" mark on the gauge. You don't have to roll on situations that are rated less than the number of "hardened" marks, but both marks count towards your climb to insanity. A character with too many hardened marks represents a character like Killy; so deadend by years in the cyber-dungeon that they can't connect to other living things. Marks can be removed by spending time unwinding/getting therapy, or manipulated through the use of the Hacking attribute, representing re-writing one’s personality to be less (or more!) mentally atypical.

    cont.

As far as combat goes, Resistance in its current form is a little bit too powerful, as people have already pointed out. Have you thought about adding a “Piercing” quality to weapons that allow them to reduce the opponent’s available Resistance? You could also add the margin of success to the weapons base power to get the final damage, meaning that GBEs will typically vaporize your run-of-the-mill citizen barring extremely good rolls. They shouldn’t be the kind of things that people mess around with. Really, with how easy healing is in this, absurd damage should be the norm.

You could also create a “hit locations” that you compare the margin of success to, which you then subtract the Resistance from. While I am not always in favor of them, in such a story-centric game system, they could be useful. For instance, someone rolls a +14 blast with a DEW weapon. You consult the DEW table and see “The beam bores through the armor plating on one of your legs, sending up a cloud of vaporized carbon. Take 30 Structure OR reduce Move by -10”.

I really like the way you split up the Netsphere levels; it makes hacking an interesting proposition that is not broken from a GM’s perspective. I’d like to see more rules for what you can and can’t hack, and maybe some new modules in the next edition. There are plenty of transhumant and cyberpunk books out there if you need some ideas. Hell, I like the cut of your jib. If you want some help, I’d be happy to type up some content for you to browse through. Shoot me an email if you want.

My thought is to divide resist by 10 to get its DR and to make d10's explode individually when rolling the 2d10 (so if either is a 10 then you roll another die).

I'll give it a go and see how it works with a few different combatants.

Alright just ran a couple of test combats using exploding d10's and a damage reduction equal to 1/10th of the resist value.

Safeguard with GBE1 vs. Automaton w/ Assault Rifle

Safeguard has a GBE (+70) and a Blast of 20 rolls an 11
Automaton has an AR (+40) and a Blast of 30 rolls a 5

Difference is 26, Automaton resists 2 of it and loses 24 structure
    Automaton, Dead (pretty expected)

So let's try something closer now and see if the results are a little less lopsided:

    Round 1

Safeguard with Assault Rifle vs. Automaton w/ Assault Rifle

Safeguard has AR (+40) and a Blast of 20 rolls an 8
Automaton has an AR (+40) and a Blast of 30 rolls a 21 (one die exploded)

    Difference is 23

Safeguard has a total resist of 50 (DR5) and a structure of 40
    Safeguard down to 22 structure

    Round 2

Safeguard (Blast 60) rolls a 22 (double explosion!) for a total of 82
    Automaton (Blast 70) rolls a 13 for a total of 83

Difference is 1 and the Safeguard soaks it

    Round 3

    Safeguard (Blast 60) rolls a 9 for a total of 69
    Automaton (Blast 70) rolls a 12 for a total of 82

Difference is 13 and the Safeguard soaks 5. He is down to 14 structure

    Round 4

    Safeguard (Blast 60) rolls a 2 for a total of 62
    Automaton (Blast 70) rolls a 21 (explode) for a total of 91

24 damage to the Safeguard who has been put down (but can still potentially live)

Well the first combat went as expected. Automaton was basically shredded into atoms in the first round as the Agent had a good 20 point advantage over it.

Second one went about as to be expected and the Agent was slowly whittled away by an opponent with a 10 point advantage.

I think my main complaint is that the rolls basically seem to be a formality once the difference is 10 or more. Even with an amazing critical the Agent lost the fire fight. The best he could do is break even or hope the more skilled opponent got unlucky (which considering die probabilities isn't happening often).

The sheer variance in the system and the ease of getting modifiers seems to make combat to easy to win so long as you have higher numbers and because everything is so light right now there are few ways to overcome that.

An Agent can start with a GBE which will basically win him any firefight he gets into no matter how skilled his opponent is. I'm starting to think that the basic system may need a re-imagining or a re-write because it is too easy for a 10+ point gap to open up between two combatants which makes any rolling a formality that only prolongs play.

Can't think of any obvious solutions right now though.

Eh, I view the system as being very stunt-heavy. Were I to GM it, I'd make it fairly easy for the PCs to get a 10-15 point bonus for intelligent combat strategies and interesting descriptions.

However, you are right. In its current form, statistics are too overpowering. How about if we try inverting the system? The goal is to roll under your stat on a D%, but to still roll over the opponent's roll? Higher stats mean higher ceilings for rolls, but combat remains random. Given how hard it is to kill and easy it is to flesh wound everything in the setting, I don't think that is a bad way to go.

Can't really use exploding dice for that, though...
    >> Anonymous 12/17/10(Fri)06:15 No.13187353
    >>13187078
May work at that point, the fear there is that normal, unaugmented people wiff pretty much every attempt to do anything. Not too bad if you ignore the normals of course but may bug some people.

I'll give it a look because it would be far more elegant to make a quick change to the basic die system than to re-write it completely.

My initial roll had the Agent win the firefight with a 33 to the Automaton's 88 (which is an outright fail). Depending on how we do margin of success that looks to be about 33 levels. But at that point we may need to keep resist the same to make things not instantly deadly if someone fails their roll.

But on the flip side rolls that are close to each other then go back to doing no damage. So while it fixes the stat issues the damage system remains problematic.

So if we switch to percentile roll-under we will still need a new damage system. My current thought is to go the Silhouette route and have weapons apply a damage multiplier to the margin of success and have resist subtract from that final number (or use it as the difficulty of a resist roll).

Either way the damage system is pretty broken as is and under base rules it is nearly impossible to damage anyone.

Did a quick conversion of the system to using a die pool but haven't tested it yet. Will post results at a later time.

Percentile system seems best for a game that has stats measured between 0 and 100. But let's rundown common dice types.

Percentiles have the advantage that they can simulate extremely unlikely situations that are still technically possible. You can still attempt something with a 1 in 100 chance.
The disadvantage is that it's a flat distribution. A 1, 50, and 100 are pretty much all equally likely results.
Some people like this because it makes calculating probability easy. But others hate the flat randomness.
Another disadvantage is that ability basicly caps at 100 for most things. If you have a skill of 100, you will always succeed under normal circumstances.

2dX systems have a proper bell curve, but there range is much more limited. It prevents people with differing power levels from interacting in any meaningful manner. Exploding dice can help negate this, but it's awkward as an extra rule and in terms of probability distribution.

Dice Pool systems Mean that low level characters will never preform beyond there normal capabilities, but high level characters can still have a bad day. Unlike percentile systems which cap at 100 (autosucess), Die Pool systems are limited only by how many dice you are willing to roll. While the odds of success increase exponentially with each added die, they never actually reach 100% and even a godling can roll all 1s.
Die pool systems however do not work as well at lower levels however. If the Odds of success are less than 1/6 (on a d6 system), the task is effectively impossible. Compared to percentile where you can still attempt to do something with a 1/100 chance.

Personally I'd like a dice pool system, but that's just me. Percentile is probably best here, at least for ability tests. Things like damage and shit might be better off using secondary attributes.

Look at how Dark Heresy does it. You have your attributes, and then you have your attribute bonuses (the tens digit in the attribute) The Attribute itself is used for tests, but the Attribute bonus is used for things like damage resistance and shit.
This does however cause the problem of only multiples of ten mattering in terms of stat optimization. You could play DH with 1d10 instead of 1d100 and the game would be essentially the same.

I always read it that, as a safeguard agent, he had access to some of the Conversion Tower's lower functions, such as a wireless power source. Some high-yield superbatteries and a free charge up at every connected zone means he could use his big gun with relative impunity.

I like the "Hardened" Ghost idea. Perhaps for each successful Sanity/Ghost check that is traumatic in nature, the PC gains Ghost points at the GM's discretion depending on the traumatic event. Failed tests result in a weaker Ghost. Higher Ghost scores mean a person is tougher, mentally speaking, and as such harder to Hack and manipulate. This could also manifest as extreme stoicism, like Killy. Weaker Ghosts just aren't up to the challenge, can't handle the Trauma upon Trauma, and are eventually easily hacked/manipulated.

Killy isn't a Safeguard agent. He's an operative from a pre-Safeguard system. What that means is uncertain, but it's likely that he works directly for the Authority or maybe even the organization that programmed the Netsphere.
