    perhaps it goes this way.

so, he's raising this dragon and it wanders off one day while he's working the forge(change this if you want I like it)

after work he wanders the woods looking for the dragon and sees a child, who runs away.

    later he finds his dragon.

the rest of his life he sees the child wandering the woods, a rumor in the town even springs up about the "girl in the trees"

on his dying bed the child, who has aged at the standard dragons rate, waltzes in and says "hello father, it's me Penny"

    DAMMIT THIS IS GETTING WRITTEN...

This won’t be a long story, it won’t hold adventure in a foreign land, nor will it show or highlight some greater truth, it’ll just be a pleasant little tale of a man and his dragon.

Shaun Carter was a blacksmith; more specifically he was the only blacksmith in the village of Slice. He was not a tall man, just over five foot six inches, but, as is the case with most men of his profession he was quite broad. He worked the smithy on the very edge of town. He’d sort of inherited it when the smith before him had died of an unexpected heart attack and his wife had had letters sent out to all the smiths in the area for someone, anyone, to come and take up the practice. So here was Shaun he’d moved into the smithy worked enough to buy the house from old Missus Thatcher, She moved into her daughter’s house much to her son-in-laws chagrin. So now Shaun lived in the house, and worked the smithy for the village. He had been at it for the better part of three years now life was good. Occasionally on days when there was no business he’d wander the woods with a longbow to supplement his larder

It was on such an occasion that the egg landed on him.

He was lining up a shot when there was a deafening sound above and behind him he loosed the arrow as the stag bolted and saw it break in the tree behind. He looked around at what had made the racket and into the sky just in time to see a thing he’d only heard of and never thought he’d see, a dragon shining in the glorious fiery red of fresh copper, with wings tinted in green along the edges. He’d heard a couple of bards tell the stories of dragons and what he saw was a thing words couldn’t justly describe. It crested the hill and flapped along at speed, then something struck it and the dragon screamed.

A ball of coherent fire and another on the way behind it, and another, he followed them back to a dark square on which a man seemed to stand, hurtling across the sky flanking him were a pair of winged shapes. Another fireball hit and the dragon dropped something shiny into the trees. He ran towards where the thing fell, and as is the nature of these things, found it when a gust of wind dislodged it from the tree branch it was sitting in and dropped fifteen pounds of hard mass on him.

When he woke up later rubbing his head the thing that had hit him was still there. It was on inspection, an egg, but enormous as big as his anvil and a pure shining copper in color, it was also warm. He carried the thing home, a little dazed, and a little excited wondering whether or not it was good luck or bad that he was now in possession of a dragon egg. He walked into his home, put the egg on the mantelpiece, poked at the fire, threw on a log, and hung up his bow.

Then he went up to the study, Mr. Thatcher had been some amazing thing or other in his younger days, Shaun had heard that he’d wandered into town in armor wearing a sword leading a pack-mule loaded with gold and books one day, he bought the house and built the smithy. Missus Thatcher had left the books behind with the house “for something to teach the grandchildren to read with”, Missus Thatcher held the view that reading was important without ever having learned herself. Mr. Thatcher bought most of the books that came through the village. Shaun looked through the collection for a book he’d opened once just to see what would be inside. He found it lurking near the encyclopedia, “the uncommon beasts of the hills and valleys” he let the book fall open in his hands, to…

    Brass
    Gold
    WATER…
    Black
    Bronze
    EARTH…
    Blue
    Copper

The list went on down the page but Shaun knew the smell and sight of copper when he encountered it he turned pages till he found the entry, he skimmed through it past the entries about what they ate (pretty much anything), how long they lived (pretty much forever) and how they spent their time (lounging on great big heaps of glod) till at the end he found the information he wanted. He read for a little while and went back downstairs.

Two days later Shaun was leaving the Butchers house with his normal weekly supplies when a strange man in a black cloak walked up to him and asked “have you seen a dragon in the last few days?” this question was so odd that Shaun couldn’t help but say.

“Yes, a couple of days ago I saw one out over the foothills, some people were chasing it.” The stranger looked closer into his face and said.

“Yes I know did it happen to drop anything?” the strangers expression seemed to change, and what it changed into was not something Shaun liked so he said

“No, I don’t think so, why?” the man smirked and said.
“My friend needed something from it for a magic trick” then he walked off. Shaun was walking down the street what he heard the man mutter something, followed by a WHOOSH of air. When Shaun turned to see there was nothing of the man but a few black feathers and a darkening shadow flying into the distance, he never saw the man again.

Over the next few weeks nobody asked about the thing in the heavy sack hung over the forge, but they did come bring up some rumors about a dragon falling to the ground dead. It was a night almost a month after he saw the dragon the night carrying the first chills of winter that the egg started hatching. Shaun put down the departed Mr. Thatchers journal, it was actually the fifth such book he’d found in the collection, and looked around a strange sound to see the egg sitting nearly in the fire rocking back and forth.

He closed the book around a flat iron bar to save his place and knelt down by the fire and watched the egg rock, it was fascinating and he never knew how long he watched before the first hole in the shell started. He’d tested it, the shell was just copper and he was wondering how the chick inside would get out, but he saw how when the upper beak broke through and worked its way around the circumference of the egg in a motion reminiscent of someone operating a pair of shears. He grasped the top segment of the shell and lifted it off. As the little thing inside shone in the firelight Shaun recalled the words of the book and dove for the larder he brought out some salted pork and sawed it up with his knife an hour later the dragonet was curled up on his lap belly distended with a contented look on her, (according to the book and it’s plumage), face.
“what am I going to call you?...” he asked himself. Looking around at the embers in the fireplace, his coat, and the bowl where he threw the loose pennies. Hold on, now there was a thought. “Penny,” he said half to himself and fell asleep.

The next day he found that the dragon had eaten one of shoes.

    and DONE

Shaun was fascinated by his little pet; she would lounge in the rafters of the forge, and watch him work soaking up the heat. Nobody seemed to bother looking up and nobody saw her. She came down for meals and between them she liked to chew on scrap iron. At night she’d go to sleep curled up beside him soaking up the warmth, in the first years seemed to melt away when he wandered the woods she’d come with him and sit on his shoulder. The only person who ever noticed her was the brewers daughter Margret, the second year after Penny hatched she came by to buy a new axe. While Shaun was working fitting axe head to haft she wandered the workshop looking at all the tools, spare pieces of iron the copper and tin he sometimes worked to see if he could.

Shaun finished his work and looked around for his customer. He saw her looking into the rafters of the forge eyes wide and mouth agape. “Here’s your axe,” said Shaun she shushed him and said in a whisper

“Don’t make any sudden moves, a giant lizard has gotten in.” Shaun laughed and said,

“That isn’t a giant lizard, its Penny.” The incredulous look Margret gave him made him laugh again “I found her egg in the woods year before last, she hatched and decided to stay here. She isn’t anything to be worried about” Shaun whistled a little tune and Penny jumped down gliding a little on her wings. He wasn’t worried about anyone seeing her do this, the forge was behind the house and open to the forest so anyone wanting his services had to ring the bell on his front door. The little dragon cheeped at them and rubbed her head against Shaun’s leg. “Here,” he said kneeling down to the dragon “she won’t bite you”

Margret spent an hour in the forge petting the dragon while Shaun told the story and asked her as kindly as possible not to tell anyone about his dragon. She promised she wouldn’t tell anyone and left with the axe during that year it seemed to Shaun that the brewery needed a lot more work done than it normally did and every time it was Margret that brought the offending tool and a few scraps for penny.

It wasn’t all that bad, thought Shaun, she was quite a good way to catch up on the news. What Shaun didn’t realize was that Margret’s frequent prolonged visits were the talk of the towns old ladies, he found this out the unpleasant way when one of them showed up and asked him over a scythe “just when are you going to marry Miss Margaret Weaver, since the two of you spend so much time together?” Shaun cursed as he hit his tongs, breaking them, and asked her what she meant. Then it was explained to him that both he and Margret were about the same age, and both not attached to anyone, and that they had been “secreted back here ostensibly in honest business; quite a lot more often than seemed proper”

This revelation shocked Shaun since he hadn’t thought to hard about those prospects since Penny hatched. He denied his part in the accusations saying only that “a good conversation makes the work take longer”

The old lady only winked at him and said. “Of course it does dear, when will you be moving her in then?” and left.

Shaun brought that up Margret later the next week over the new set of horseshoes for the taverns horse, she didn’t deny that the dragon got her attention the first few visits, but he’d kept it. That evening they went walking out in the woods with Penny, and later that year were married their rings were made of a fragment from penny’s eggshell. Not much happened over the next couple of years; they tried, and failed, to have a child and Penny outgrew Shaun’s shoulder.

On a cool evening Shaun was wandering in the woods, bow in hand, looking for something to put in the larder. Penny had stayed behind at the forge, she looked like she was a little ill. as he was walking back he heard a sound, like a child crying in the darkness, he followed it and saw a tiny little girl wandering the woods she started running and Shaun followed her but lost the track in the dark. He returned and said nothing about it.

Years passed, and on his evenings out in the woods Shaun would occasionally see the little girl, he thought it was the little girl, she seemed to grow up, but slowly. Margaret told him once or twice that she’d heard men talking about “the girl in the trees” a girl child with pale skin and long red hair, running through the woods at night.

More years passed one night Shaun thought he heard someone working in his forge, when he came down, all he found was Penny now the size of a very small horse and a piece of metal partially folded on the anvil. He put the piece on the workbench and went back to bed.

This seemed to happen several times, and by the end of the week the folded piece had become a small and slightly serviceable knife. More years passed, penny outgrew even her spot by the kitchen fireplace and took to sleeping in the forge and hiding behind the workbench when people came by. The phantom blacksmith seemed to get better, producing an axe, a few buckles, and some barrel-hoops, one evening Shaun heard the sounds in the forge and just left them at their work. The next morning he came down and found a horse standing in the forge with a brand new set of shoes. Two days later he found a butchered deer and Margaret heard a man tell of how he watched “the girl in the trees” she was now described by many to be about twelve with hair all the way down to her waist kill a deer and drag it off.

One dark and stormy evening Shaun lay in his bead, wracked by a terrible cough, he was an old man, several of the people of the village waited downstairs as the village healer saw to him, their only blacksmith. She came down and told them that he didn’t have long. They came in to watch him die. As they trudged in behind them came a tall young woman she looked about sixteen and had waist length red hair. Up in the room everyone sat and when she stepped in Jonathan Smith the village tanner gasped. “it’s th-the girl in the trees!”

Everyone fell silent as she walked up to Shaun and knelt beside him and said in a quiet voice “I know what’s going to happen next, I’ll miss you, Dad.” This seemed to shock everyone including Margaret and Shaun

“what did you say?” asked Margaret incredulously. The girl stood and looked at her and smiled and said.

“you heard exactly what I said, it is as much the truth as it can be, I am Penny” and in a flash she changed into the shining form of Penny the dragon now the size of a good carthorse, she changed back and looked down at Shaun despite the stunned looks from everyone in the room. “I know what will happen soon, and I know that I cannot stop it. You will be missed but I shall carry on here as your legacy. Goodbye father.” She embraced Shaun and the room heard him draw a breath, release it, draw another, release it.

He didn’t draw a third, but everyone saw the tear in his eye and the smile on his face.
