You are Maya Terrasdottir, a human-turned Frost Giant stuck in a fantasy world of war, magic, and heavy, armored beasts. You have gathered enough fertilizer to cover all four fields, finished plowing with no great effort, and brought the irrigation system to near-completion, with one more day of solid work required. Things are coming together.

    Practiced 'Spells':
    Cold Laser
    Ice Grenade

    Last Post from Previous Thread:

Deep furrows cover the land by late afternoon. You unbuckle yourself from the heavy apparatus, and return it to the storehouse, breathing hard. You take a moment to rest, have some water, and throw yourself back into the work, picking up an enormous wooden scoop and digging long trenches into the spaces between the fields. By sunset, you've accomplished an incredible amount, cutting the irrigation system's time down to a single day.

At supper, you continue your story, relaxing against the Hall while the tale of Aku's search for an apprentice unfolds. The villagers are quite into it by now, prodding you with all manner of questions during the ordeal. You kind of like it, telling them stories.

When night falls, you test your 'grenades' again, focusing on a point as far away from you as possible this time. The shards explode in sequence, sweeping the area with tiny crystalline blades. This time, you don't get cut.

Using these effects outside is likely to have some interesting results.

As a response to the talk of a communist revolution at the end of the last thread, your town is already the picture of worker's cooperation. There is no wealth. All resources are used for the betterment of the town itself and to ensure the survival of those within. The leaders are no better fed or better clothed than the peasants they rule. Everyone works, no one profits unduly. This is not to say that the town's population is devoid of ambition, just that circumstances have forced all to toil for the common welfare, not for individual benefit.

Giant-sized creatures have many physiological problems. One that nobody talks about is piss. Giants of course have giant-sized bladders, but their urine has all the same properties. Assuming their urinary systems are proportionally the same strength as ours, this would mean that from the tiny cracks in their giant sized urinary sphincters would constantly leak a stream of piss, wherever they go. A giant would stink like a hobo and walking between one's legs would be highly inadvisable.

I'll get to work on this.

In the meantime, Raik has started practicing with the smithing tools and the crafting manual, enlisting the help of two of the farmer/builders, both of whom possess a minute degree of skill in metalworking.

As far as the planting schedule, two fields are marked for Wheat only, and the two others were planned for Flashweed and Beets. There are only enough Flashweed seeds to cover a half-field, but it grows quickly enough to spread to the rest within three months. There are only enough Beet seeds to cover one fourth of a field, and it grows quite slowly.

A crude steam engine would only take a small amount of bronze to create. The uses for it would be countless in such a village. I am certain they have a blacksmith who could produce the required pieces.

But yes, a list of resources, stock piles and the like, would be useful. Also, what sort of trade comes through this village? Do they have an annual merchant stop by, or is it near a viable trade route?

Morning comes with a sense of accomplishment. With your help, the little village has started its growing season early, which could mean an extra harvest before winter, which, in turn, would mean everyone eats well. You are not nearly as fatigued as when you first started using magic on your own, either, which is a good sign. Perhaps you can find an application for your newfound power that will further accelerate developments here.

After a hearty breakfast, you get back to the fields, using a one of the plow blades as a spreader for seeds. With your large hands, you can't cast wheat like the human farmers, but your great size enables you to carry several bags at a time. Though you have to go a little bit slower to make sure you get an even spread, it evens out, so by lunch, the first field is nearly done.

Following that, you leave the remainder to the farmers as you venture into the forest with a wooden scoop, digging up shrubs for the windbreak. The more of them you can transplant, the less time it will take for the hedge row to become actually useful. As soon as you've stuck them firmly in the ground, some of the women run over them delicately, picking all of the berries.

As the day comes to a close, you continue your epic tale, introducing Aki, Aku's chosen apprentice, and throwing enormous amounts of minions into Jack's path. He perseveres, never losing sight of his goal: to defeat the dark lord, and return home.

You try your hand at separating the grenades this time, spreading them over a wider area. One of them appears inside a wall, blasting a rather large hole in it, but the rest come up through the floor, scattered all over the cavern. You fall asleep to the ever-present sound of the whisper, ever-more easy to ignore.

After a few hours of work, you spot something approaching from the South, along the road to the next town. It's very far away, little more than a shimmer in your vision, but it's getting closer.

We could try to work on some kind of spell that leaves an area cold for long periods of time. With that, making a cold storage room would only require the digging of a pit and putting a roof on top. Keeping food preserved should be fairly high on our list of priorities; what's the point in helping them grow so much food if half of it gets rotten or spoiled by the time they're ready to eat it?

You watch the approaching thing get closer and closer, until you can see clearly enough to identify it. It's a cart, drawn by a single horse, with a short man sitting on top of the driving seat. There's a sheet of canvas covering the cargo.

One of the villagers alerts the Elders, who spend a moment or two looking around wildly, making sure you're nowhere to be seen. Sahl tells one of the hunters something, and he takes off running in your general direction.

A few minutes later, he spots you, and, nearly out of breath, tells you that a merchant from Fain has arrived. He's an old fellow, only coming around once a year or so, with no set schedule. He usually brings seeds, tools, some trinkets, and a few books. If you stay hidden, one of the other hunters will be along in a moment to tell you what he's got.

    Resources gained:
    1 Book of Economics
    1 Book of Medicine
    1 Book of Forest Lore
1 Biography of Sir Leland Erestian, Lieutenant-General, Perin Third Army
    2 Bags of Corn

The cost, thanks to Bem, is about half what it would be in Fain. 13 furs and a little bit of gold.

After the merchant is far enough down the road for you not to worry about being seen, you exit the forest and head down to the Hall, where the Elders are leafing through the books.

Opening one, let alone turning the pages, is exceedingly difficult for a giant, so Lark does it for you. You lean down as he shows you the biography, and you take a look at one of the chapters.

It's what you'd expect, really. A lot of over-long words, noble ridiculousness, and going off on tangents about the nature of the world and the relation between the elite and the lessers. The later chapters have quite a lot about tactics, strategy, order, supply lines, and other such army-related things. An informative read, if you can get through it.

With the little trade matter taken care of, and a preview of the biography behind you, you abandon the woodcutting adventure for the time being and get back to channel-digging. By lunch, you're nearly halfway done, with gates in place all the way between the stream and the fields. Mal says that the gates will be raised once planting is done, unless you think better.

During lunch, you take a look at the Medicinal book, finding it full of medieval-level and industrial-level knowledge alike, with diagrams and charts of Human, Hagrek, and Ull bodies, their innards, their circulatory pathways, etc. A fair amount of the 'medicine' is simply herbal remedies, combined with manuals on how to set breaks, treat swelling, sew cuts, and other bits of knowledge you could find in any first aid kit back home.

As the Elders are alternatively focusing on the biography and the Economics text, teaching a few words here and there to Mal, the most literate of the peasants, you warn them that a good portion of either book will probably be classist propaganda, designed to make the rich and well-off feel good about oppressing the poor and weak. Sahl and Bem agree, telling you they heard much of that in the army, though their village upbringing and humble roots countered the indoctrination nicely.

At sunset, the irrigation channels are finished, and gated off with roughly-cut pieces of lumber. You settle down for supper, a little tired but no worse for it, and take a look at the book of Forest Lore. It's like a combination field manual, biology textbook, and atlas, tracing a large number of species through their habitats throughout the nation and explaining how best to kill or incapacitate them. You find the entry on averrons particularly interesting, as it mentions that the beasts are extremely docile and easy to train, though they have to feed constantly and produce large, block-like bits of waste. In effect, they shit bricks.

Once you're safely inside your little cavern, you decide to test a different effect. Instead of focusing your magical power into a single attack, you could draw it out into a long-lasting chill. As the tablet whispers its sweet words, you open your mind, seeing first a line, then a circle, then a sphere, expanding the shape until it's difficult to visualize, feeling the symbols drawing themselves into the ring.

You fire, letting the magic of ice cascade out of the ring's rune, expand into a bubble and coalesce. It's beautiful, like the whirling wind of a snowglobe, a soft, bright wall of blue expanding in all directions. It gets halfway to the cavern wall and stops, seeming to melt into the air around you. It's cold now, like a winter morning lit by the first small slivers of sun. You can already feel it fading, but you don't feel exhausted. It has been five days. The first and second fields have been sown with Wheat, and you will be finishing with the Flashweed tomorrow. Windbreaks have been planted or transplanted all along three sides of the first field, with no danger of running out of wild bushes for a long while. The self-appointed cooks of the village have been mixing berries they know to be edible in with the porridge, hiding some of the blandness behind the sweetness of natural sugar.

During meals and at short break times throughout the day, you've been studying the Medicine and Forest Lore texts, gradually picking up a broad knowledge about the world's flora and fauna, as well as the medical benefits of consuming them. The English is a little archaic, being written by professors and scholars of the high classes, but you get through it with little trouble. Mal is learning how to read from the Elders, then teaching the other farmers, who teach their wives, who teach the children, passing the science of words down like a chain.

At supper, after a long day of hard work, you continue the saga of Jack, working in some of what you learned from the biography as a class composed of Aku's richest servants, who use what power he gives them strictly for their own benefit. Gradually, you mold the noble, wealthless Samurai into a hero of the weak and downtrodden, fighting as much for a way home as a better life for the masses under the rule of evil.

When you have the time, you teach, regurgitating what you remember of modern medicine and tying it into simple, easy-to-learn principles, such as the necessity of purging the filth of surgical tools and medical instruments with fire and heat. The women and children are looking up to you as a great scholar as well as a storyteller, seeking your wisdom on every subject, absorbing your modern common sense with no end in sight.

Underground, when night falls, you read by the glow of the tablet, and practice your magical skills, each time extending the range of the chill, until, by the fifth night, you can cover the whole cavern in a cold that lasts till morning. It is getting easier and easier to see the shapes and bend them to your will, and each cast takes less out of you. The next night, you might be able to manage two 'spells' instead of one.

At dawn on the sixth day, you walk just inside the forest's edge to clean your overalls in the purified stream, and you see something. Large, pitch black, like a solid shadow, moving slowly behind the trees. Even with your powerful eyesight, you can't make out any details. It seems to soak up the light like a black hole.

You left your armor and your weapons in the cavern. No use for them when farming, after all.

You shift your legs and bring your arms up in front of you, taking a defensive stance. You can't risk turning your back on this thing at this point.

It moves closer, growing steadily larger in your vision as the morning light catches for a brief moment on a part of it, shining back into your eyes like it struck a mirror. You see silver, mixed with a tarnished green. It inches closer, and its sound reaches your ears.

A soft rustling, like a tiny rodent scampering through the underbrush, mixed with the quiet hiss of something sharp parting the air. As the black thing creeps closer, you feel around for a weapon, picking up a short, splintered stick that will do as a spear.

The sun strikes nine red eyes, boiling with an orange taint.

"What are you?" you manage, clenching your teeth as a river of fire runs through your body, tightening around your heart.

The creature does not answer. Its eyes lock on yours as it advances, bringing itself further into the light. Its silvered armor gleams in the reddened sun, heaving with every step as the thing crawls forward, breaking the soft ground with its sharp, segmented limbs.

The nine eyes form a circle, with one in the center. The closer it gets, the worse it feels. Your skin is burning, crawling with thousands of tiny spiders.

    It stops. You pull back.

It reaches for you, stretching out a thin, spindly arm with sharpened claws.

The black thing moves steadily backward, screaming in a voice made of fire and hate as you come up, driving the splintered stick into its broken eye and through, further and further into its skull.

The end snaps off as you drop down, bringing your hands up to defend yourself. But there's no need.

The huge, black monstrosity falls to the ground, legs splayed in every direction as its head hits the dirt, a pink, viscous fluid leaking from its eyes. The fire is gone.
