Oh christ, I remember a trap like that in Fighting Fantasy book 6: Deathtrap Dungeon.
Except it was emerald eyes of a giant golden buddha.
Anyway, first you need a rope to make your way to the top (or risk instant death if you flub the Skill check).
Then you need to fight off two average enemies, at a Skill defecit due to narrow ground (you're standing on the Buddha's shoulder and you can't move).
Then it asks you which eye you are going to pry out first.
One is safe. The other will hit you with knockout gas, sending you plumetting to a hard floor and a broken neck.

The rub?
The 'safe' emerald has no hints that it's the safe one AND it's a necessary item to complete the module, not that you know this until like two thirds of the way through, by which two of the three gems have already passed you (the Emerald and the Diamond).
It's literally a 50/50 "Guess right and you have a quest item, guess wrong and you die instantly".

It's actually one of my least-favorite Fighting Fantasy books. Too much combat, too many luck-puzzles, not enough thinking-puzzles.

I'd recommend #48 Moonrunner, where you play a Bounty Hunter (it has the Skill System that later games used for flavour); it has a horror theme to it and has just the right blend of fighting and puzzling.
Or #40 Dead Of Night, which is more-fighting-less-puzzling, but your character is a Paladin and you have to strike a balance between pragmatism and being Lawful Good.

I actually have a relatively large collection of FF books, which is pretty good given that most of them went out of print ten years before I was born.

Best bet is ordering online or hitting up second-hand bookstores - virtually ALL OF MINE are from second-hand stores, and I'm fortunate that every year there is a 2nd-hand-book market type thing in the middle of town, plus I live like 15 minutes walk away from the Bazaar, which has an entire backroom dedicated to second-hand books.

Now, some of these have actually recieved modern reprints (starting with The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, which was the first), but I suggest you STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM THEM (barring that one) because all of them use a copypasta of the original rules with whatever "Special" versions (i.e. Skill System) tagged onto them.

This is an issue with some books like #25 Sword of the Samurai (reprint pictured - note that it lacks the green section across the top), because changing what you rolled for Stamina and Skill (the two stats) and the number of starting provisions was the primary way of modifying the difficulty of the book.
This is not retained in the reprints (as those sections are copypasta'd from the first book instead of their actual book), resulting in some reprint books being too hard or too easy.

#24 Creature of Havoc does this as well - there's a dungeon section where a Dark Elf has a whistle that summons Skill 7 Stamina 8 Chaos Warriors. It loops you through four sections indefinitely until you eventually lose (7-12 is your skill; combat is both roll 2d6+Skill, loser takes 2 damage - because in Creature of Havoc you are monstrous and have scales, you only take 1, which is nice because Creature is VERY nasty with traps and has lots of combat. Anyway, you will eventually die).

This one is available in Horrible Reprint form as well, with the front cover being the Devourer, one of the first monsters you fight, instead of Zharradan Marr, the BBEG.
