You are Maya Terrasdottir, a human-turned Frost Giant stuck in a fantasy world of war and magic. You are a mage beyond peer. You are under divine protection. You're in hell.

The swordsman leans back against the jagged rock, gritting his teeth as the priest lays his hands on the damaged leg. A faint white shines from the wound as Grim works his magic, pulling forth bone and flesh from the air. In seconds the poor man has his leg again, complete and flawless. He flexes his toes, and attempts to stand.

“Good work. Let's see if I can get out with it still attached,” he says, resting the bare foot on the hot floor.

His field sparks with yellow, protecting the unarmored limb from the heat of the earth. A brief, unassuming smile lets you know that he'll be able to keep up. Unfortunately, the field provides no backup, so if it fails again, it will not be pretty. The sorceress takes a moment to cast a spell of protection on Loken's leg, her breathing quickening. You're all tired, but Supra and you have taken the worst of it. Neither of you have much power left.

Grim moves forward, tapping his staff on the far wall. This time, there is a spark. His eyes glow briefly.

    “Close. Down. Through. Almost there.”

Well, that's something. Thatos speaks up, readjusting his scratched helmet.

“Alright, people. We're almost to our objective. It would help if we knew what we were going to find, but life doesn't always work to our advantage.” He gets up, brushing himself off. “Comments? Plans? World shouldn't end for at least fifteen minutes, so we've got time.”

Loken suggests that he be in front, as that's what he's there for anyway. The fire mage protests, but your 'tank' isn't having it. He's big, thick-skinned, and not all that averse to death. It only makes sense, and it always has. He moves forward, pushing Thatos lightly with the pommel of his longsword. He yields.

Shaking your head, you take two of the tiny potion bottles from your pack, offering one to Supra. You both uncork them and down them in one shot, instantly feeling rejuvenated. She thanks you, muttering something about 'preparedness' and elbowing Thatos in the gut.

You take out the mining stone. It's not the most reliable thing, but if it can get you closer without draining you, so much the better. You press it to the wall, imagining a tunnel sloping down.

The stone, once again, fizzles. You contemplate throwing it on the ground and stomping on it until you feel better, but that wouldn't be fair to Sae. So, with reluctance, you palm it, informing the others that you'll have to wait for the stupid thing to charge again. Thatos leans back against the wall, taking a deep breath. Loken taps his sword on the ground, watching its field spark against the rock. The minutes pass in silence, and the stone finally gives you that soft, sharp tone that lets you know it's ready again. Fortunately, this time, it works, and the wall yields to your touch, forming a perfectly round tunnel down into the depths.

With Grim tapping his staff behind you, directing you with an occasional word, you move through the wall, opening the way in front and letting it close behind. You sincerely hope that the gods can get you out the way they put you in, so you don't have to go through all of this to get back to the surface. In fifteen minutes, it's beginning to get a bit tiring, but you do have plenty of potions, so you keep going.

The priest presses a hand to your shoulder, opening his eyes. “Almost. Ahead. Be ready.”

Loken comes up beside you, sword in hand. The others form up behind him, Thatos on the left, Supra on the right, and Grim behind. You press on, and the wall crumbles easily, letting the light of the mantle pour in.

Roll 1d20 for placement. High is good.

An immense cavern expands before you, its walls irregular and warped, its ceiling molten, dripping a hellish rain upon the broken floor. The heat assaults you like a constant blast wave, forcing you to lean forward, lest you fall. It's a safe bet you're in the right place.

Thatos shouts out, his voice cracking, “We're here! I can feel it!”

Grim echoes that. Loken starts to move forward, using his sword to steady his advance. He looks like he's regretting his choice to be in front, but he's determined to continue. Shimmering, superheated air tears at his field, slipping past and into the tunnel. You stay beside him, bringing up a hand to shield your face.

The five of you take the easiest path you can find, winding around the enormous stalagmites and red-hot boulders, narrowly avoiding the drops of magma from the ceiling. It doesn't take long to reach the center of the room, where you stop, standing at the edge of a pool of fire itself. Nine burning, shifting orange spheres float in front of you, rotating in the air. Blazing filaments reach from each of them to the ceiling, dragging across it. One of them detaches, moving off to the wall on the right, and another forms in its place. This is the source.

Thatos peeks out from behind his human shield, taking a brief look. “Magelocks! They probably stuffed all the power they had into those things!”

The sorceress sighs. “Well, I never thought it'd be easy. We better get to it.” She raises her hands, but the priest restrains her.

“No. Wait.” The staff glows. “Back!”

Hey, um, sorry if this was asked in a previous thread, I haven't been following this quest in a while, but do we know what will happen to us if we die?

We've been in contact with a frost giant god, so presumably there's an afterlife here. So, uh, does everybody go to the same fate? Are there specific afterlives for different races, like, as a Frost Giant with a human 4channer soul would we go to Frost Giant hell or Human hell?

You are knocked back, forced to one knee as you pull the priest toward you and behind you, letting him take shelter behind your armor. Loken takes the other two, barely making it behind one of the stalagmites as a bright orange beam lances across the cavern, slicing the tops of the rocky pillars.

You peek through the spaces between your fingers as something begins to laugh, its hard, cruel voice shaking the entire cavern. Your left arm extends behind you, keeping the priest pressed into your back. The other is reaching for your crossbow.

The light decreases, swirling around the center-point, forming into a flat, incredibly bright plane. A figure, clothed in black, steps through it, taking the laughter with him. It dies down as he raises his hands, placing both on his helmet, a single solid piece of Magma Steel. He removes it, revealing a face blurred by intense heat.

You swing the crossbow around, cocking it and firing with one smooth motion.

Grinning, you shout, “Hey. Chill out!”

    >2

The bolt stops in mid-air, just in front of his forehead. With his right hand, he plucks the thing, crushing it in his gauntlet, head and all. He sprinkles the glittering pieces into the magma pool, laughing like a bastard.

“YOU CAME ALL THIS WAY TO SEND ME A TOOTHPICK?” His gauntlets glow white-hot as he brings them up, palms out. “YOU'RE ALMOST TOO GOOD TO MURDER.”

He swings around, leering at you with a hideously warped mouth, pointing his hands at the swordsman, still laughing.

Loken bursts into flame as the stalagmite in front of him disintegrates. His sword melts in his hands, turning into a thin silver pool on the cracked, darkened floor. The field is swept away like so much dust as he crawls forward, shielding his comrades from the blast. His armor peels off, dropping to the floor as the fire permeates his skin.

    “Maya,” he whispers, “Kill him.”

The swordsman falls to the ground, his broken body turning instantly to ash. Your adversary raises his hands, blowing the steam away from the cooling gauntlets.

“CRISPY. ANY VOLUNTEERS, OR SHOULD I GO ALPHABETICALLY?”

its time to work smarter, not harder.
this giant is possesed by the vast intellectual consciousness of the anonymous hive-mind, we bequeath understanding and directive and the being will believe it has known it all along, no force or power in a prime can hope to fully comprehend us.

that being said, lets think about this for a moment, when using cold powers, where does that heat go? barring the use of our heat pump abilities, (an admirable complication i might add), i assume its shunted to the plane of fire, completing the circle.
now, what i propose is fuckering with his connection to fire, tossle his control, causing him to lose power, or be burned by a surge of might.
or maby become even more powerful, or slightly weaker, or possesed by an elemental, all possible with the right technique. but i propose we wait till he tries to cast again, drawing energy, then 'cut his brake line', a sort of reverse counterspell if you will.

this opponent is obviously in command of alot of power, but how well can he utilize it? understand it? if he is ancient and knowlageble he might have dealt with such machinations before, but perhaps not so directly.

    rolled 5, 3, 6 = 14

You make a run for Supra, quickly popping the cork on your other human-size potion, and pouring it into her open mouth. You have no time to see if it works, because your adversary's about to break free. Taking another potion as you go, you focus on the orbs, calling for grenades as you toss the tiny glass bottle aside. You slam into the ice wall, pressing your helmet against it and shutting your eyes.

Diamonds. The enchanted spheres explode, one by one, as you detonate your bombs inside them. The adversary twists in his solid prison, his armor turning white as he pours his power into it. The ice begins to flash into steam as the last orb blows apart, releasing the filaments to wander.

You take another potion, emptying it into your throat as you prepare to jump. You'll have one chance at this.

Roll 1d20 for attack. Success on 10.

Your death approaches. You stand to face it, like the man you used to be. Your left hand reaches for the tablet, as you try the oldest tactic you know.

    “One question. Why?”

The armored demon stops, lowering his hands for a brief moment.

“BECAUSE. IT'S A JOB, AND I ENJOY IT.”

You bring the tablet out, thrusting it in front of you as the adversary unleashes his power, casting two flickering streams of flame in your direction. They strike the tablet dead-center as the runes glow their brightest blue, sparking with magical energy.

You have no time to call for assistance. You have no time to think. The tablet explodes in your hands, sending shards of ice in all directions, freezing your arms solid. You smash against the floor as you gaze in terror at what you have unleashed.

A shining, mirrored form extends its wings, scraping the tips against opposite walls of the cavern. Its legs unfold, burying two enormous claws in the rocky floor, bracing it. The adversary leaps back as the thing's head snaps at him, catching his arm in its beak.

“I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY, YOU CHUCKLEFU-” he cuts off as the spirit of ice freezes him, tossing him up in the air and biting him in half, armor and all.

Then it turns to you. The molten ceiling solidifies instantly as its head lowers, its four gleaming eyes blazing with bluish streaks.

    Your world ends.

Good quest then. I especially appreciate how you always stuck to a schedule and would announce skip days in advance.

Also if you ever do another quest. Consider making Middle as the good numbers.

As we have seen with this thread, if you use high is good, people will suspect that trolls are stealth rollan low to try and kill the thread.

If you make Low is Good though, people would fake roll low to cheat.

Make Middle is Good (ex: out of a 1d20, 8,9,10,11,12 are excellent rolls). It is more complicated but no chance of rollan shenanigans.

    “MAYA.”

Your vision begins to clear. You see a face in the blackness. Two brilliant blue eyes look into yours, lit by an unseen light. The face moves back, revealing its owner, your patron god. You reach out, or try to, anyway.

He looks away. “I HAVE... SAVED WHAT REMAINED.”

You try to move your arms. Your legs. You feel nothing.

“PLEASE. DON'T.” The god retreats from you, turning away. “I CANNOT BEAR IT.”

You stop, waiting in place. A soft, blue glow intrudes on your vision, creeping around the edges. You feel like you're floating.

“YOUR ESSENCE,” he says, glancing back at you, “YOUR SOUL. HERE, WITH ME.” He turns toward you again, motioning to his chest, which blurs into darkness below his waist. “YOUR BODY HAS BEEN... LOST. TO FASHION ANOTHER, SUCH AS THAT,” he sighs, “IS BEYOND MY POWER.”

In a blink, he is with you, holding you in the palm of his hand. “YOU MAY REMAIN HERE, IN MY REALM, FOR AS LONG AS YOU WISH. I WILL GRANT YOU MY SIGHT. IN TIME, YOU MAY BECOME AS I AM. YOU MAY BECOME MANY THINGS.”

There are lights in the sky. A dozen, perhaps more. They speak, veiling their faces in the black. “Your fate is as you decide,” they say as one, “You have sacrificed all for others. Perhaps foolishly, but... honorably. You may be of Hretmar's court. You may be of any one of ours. You may be a wanderer. You may be a new form.”

A new light appears, brighter than the others, circling around behind you. “And you can return to where you belong. A fitting end, don't you think?”

If you want to wander for awhile, or just stay with Hretmar and see how you like being a god's assistant, you can take your time. Souls rarely make snap decisions.

OK, since this thread is saging. Time to vote on the new quest direction. Vote by posting the number.

    1) End Quest. Done. Dead. Over. No more updates...
    2) Continue - as a god/soul/spirit thing
    3) Continue - reincarnate as a frost giant
    4) Continue - reincarnate as a human
    5) Continue - reincarnate as something else
    6) Other

Personally, I want to stick around on the soul plane for a while. We can do some good up here and it'll be much easier to destroy that ice demon from up here that it will be from down there. But eventually I do want to reincarnate and head back to...whatever the world down there is called...preferably as a human.

If you wanted to pursue a path among the deities, you would choose your sphere, or focus. The more specific, the more powerful you would be within those confines. Since you already have plenty of potential followers in Dreamwood, you would be able to advance in skill much more quickly than many souls who choose that route.

Can we become the god/dess of communicating knowledge, and allow our followers to connect with us and each other over long distances, real time, to share each other's ideas? And over time set up what is effectively the internet, that can be tapped into with a thought?

You can choose Communication or any subset of that as your sphere. Your power would be pitiful at first, but as it was used, it would increase. Eventually, you could set up such a network. Handing it off to another god would be obscenely difficult, but creating an incorporeal golem of sorts to act as a 'relay' might work. Without an active presence, and effort, the network would deteriorate, so the golem method would be more of a temporary measure.

In a few centuries we'll have enough followers and experience to reincarnate ourselves and have awesome adventures as a demigod.

First, you glare at the brightest light, wishing you still had at least one finger. “Fuck off,” you tell it, and it fades away, muttering something about how opposing it is bad for your health.

To Hretmar and the others, you speak of choices. You are leaning towards reincarnation, since you have unfinished business. However, you would like to remain with them for a while, to learn about their powers, and see if you could do more good as one of them. They accept this, though Hretmar warns that if you become too attached to the realm of the gods, it could be very difficult to go back.

With a touch from your patron god, you are released, to move as you please between his place and the others', to watch them work, and help if you wish.

Despite their characteristics, they are as intelligent as humans, and have been known to craft staggeringly beautiful works of art.

Ulls - They resemble upright-walking lizards, complete with scales and tail. They prefer not to associate closely with humans, instead providing their services at a distance, often through proxies. The Ull are tall, fast, and difficult to kill, making them fine soldiers, messengers, and assassins. About ten percent of the army's bulk consists of self-contained Ull Regiments.

Trolls/Goblins/Orcs - All different subtypes of the same race. Goblins and Orcs are intelligent, though most less so than humans. They are raiders and barbarians, having no real civilization. Trolls and Orcs are incredibly strong, have thick hides, and are vulnerable to fire. Goblins are generally about half the size of humans, are clever and quick, and have aptitude for earth, nature, and luck magic.

I'm leaning towards reincarnation, after a bit of exploring of course.

Although it raises the question: if we could come back as 'anything' would we come back as a Frost Giant female again? While coming back as a human has its benefits even if we were forced to come back as a Frost Giant we could return to being a male.

Would need a new opening picture, though.

Fire-oriented as in a being of fire or fire-oriented as in learning fire magic with our new body? If our new goal in this quest is to defeat what we unleashed then fire magic would be nice but not worth alienating Hretmar over.

Honestly, I think that if we want fire to help us, we'd be better spent trying to get Forus to help against the Ice Demon. I mean, with this new development, the war is turning in our favor, and if we win, one of the terms of victory could be many fire-based items, powers and magic users which could then be used should the Ice Demon try to go after Perin.

Different site. Not /tg/. The game was a standard mercenary d&d fantasy type game, but it really fell apart after the dm dumped in the romance stuff. Obviously, I don't know how it would be handled here and how well it would go down, but I think it would be quite difficult to portray it well.

Aside from my bad questan experience, I simply feel that frost giantess already has a great style that works for it and I am cautious about changing that style.

How's this: we reincarnate into the body of a frost giant dying forgotten on a battlefield somewhere. If we find one that the soul has evacuated but still has some life left, couldn't we maybe ask for a favor from our bro gods to let us use it and get it to livable status?

everything is derivative of everything else. At any rate, I propose this because it's the fastest way to get us back to Dreamwood. Short of being reincarnated as a new human there.

Well since they talked about getting reincarnated as an option, I'm guessing they have a way to put us back as a Frost Giant, probably by creating a new body. I don't see why we'd need to take the body of another Frost Giant that's probably very far away from Dreamwood.

if we did ask to be reincarnated, would it just be a case of "poof, you're there" or would we actually have to wait for the new body to mature before we trudged back to Dreamwood?
