The book expanded on that to account for a lot of what's seen in the movie that "Lol Energy Beings" doesn't really explain.

Drej Drones are made of starlight, collected by fiber optics embedded in the surface of the Mothership and coalesced into drej-shape by the will of the Queen, before being enclosed in synthetic envelopes so they can maintain their shape even when she's not paying attention. They also have individual wills, while maintaining a collective awareness.

The Grimdark in me says: Just before the events of the movie, with humanity scattered to the stars and the drej making a play at killing some more shit.
The Noblebright says: immediately after the events of the movie, with the players trying to reunite the scattered bits of humanity, and working with Cale and Akima to get the world running.

    >>8785248

For some reason it's really unknown. I found my copy in a dollar store years ago and haven't seen another one, ever.

It's by Steven and Dal Perry, although I think those might be pseudonyms.

Three chapters were devoted to the story from the Drej's perspective. They were interestingly portrayed. Very alien.

Mantrins are the kangaroo-people. They're described differently in the book than they were animated, being more avian, with a parrot-like beak and an oddly pleasant scent, like cinnamon.

I'd go with your Noblebright instincts on this one, because that just sounds like a way more interesting campaign. I'd leave Akima and Cale in the "Big Picture" though, not as DMPC's or what have you.

Never played it actually. This is just a guess, but doesn't it have a lot of mechanics that pretty much only fit into the 40k universe? Traveller feels a bit more generic and fitting.

No, I wouldn't have Akima and Cale running around doing much of anything. In fact, they'd probably be miserable just trying to keep Planet Bob from becoming a giant resource war as everyone and their cousin moves in. The movie seems to portray a lot of aliens as 'space hobos' as well, with habitable worlds (that aren't so alien they kill you straight out) as a super-rarity.

As for system, the only reason I mention RT, is that I like its mechanics more than Traveller, but freely admit that Traveller is the more appropriate system.

What are peoples opinions? A more gritty feel of the setting with more lethal combat where getting shot just once is a big deal and might kill you? Or more of a heroic stance a la D&D?

I'd prefer gritty realism, just because it fits the setting so much better. Getting shot IS a big deal in T:AE. Medical technology is really good, but if you take a focus-burner shot to the leg, you're going down. If you take one to the torso, you aren't getting back up.
    >> Anonymous 03/25/10(Thu)18:22 No.8785615

    >> Anonymous 03/25/10(Thu)18:45 No.8786093
Okay, getting back on topic guise.

The players are some of the first folks with a working FTL ship to come "home" to New Earth City, Planet Bob. As such, you've volunteered (yes, volunteered) to work for Cale and Akima to help get humans back together.

We number some 3,431,000~ spread over the stars. Too many humans are slaves, many in the worst imaginable ways. Planet Bob is rich in all sort of resources, but Titan fused them into patterns mimicking natural worlds, so any wealth there is to be had is yet to be exploited, leaving the planet in economic straights not much better than drifting humans face anyway.

As if to imagine things could worsen, slavers, pirates, looters, and criminals on the lam are all too willing to flock to Bob.

Do what it takes, humanity must endure.

It's difficult to tell. The Drej have existed for SO LONG that even they don't know where they came from originally, and the Ship is their major population center. It's actually kind of an awesome parallel they have with humanity: Neither has a homeworld to go back to.

It's speculated that they're originally from another galaxy, or even another universe, and got stranded in our region with just one ship.

Side note: They blew up the earth because they were FREAKING OUT that we'd stumbled across Artifact-Technology, physics-breaking stuff that they have, but can't remember how to fix or duplicate.

    Yeah, this is true.

That would be a good point for previous posters actually:
The colony ships at the end of the film could quite believably only be a small proportion of the human race.
Thered be loads of indiviual human trader ships, or just people living on shithole asteroids like the one Cale started on at the beginning of the story. Getting the word out without also letting all the unsavoury aliens know about it would be a challenge.

    But an awesome one.

Hence why the PCs are brought on to bring them home.

Suggested mission: An alien mogul keeps a "human town" on his personal space hulk. He'd be happy to sell them to you, or let you expand his asteroid mining operations (by clearing out the current occupants of a large asteroid.) Also, he keeps a number of young humans, born A.E., as his personal "servants" (and you can read that however you like.) They're the only people you ever deal with when looking to speak with the mogul. It'd be a shame to have to leave them in his tentacles, but he won't sell no matter what.

Because he fucking built it, landed on it first, named it, and the only known map to it is in his FUCKING HAND. The map to Titan is after all, now the map to Bob. He probably doesn't have a lot of control. I suggested earlier that he probably hates the job of trying to run it. It could have even driven a wedge between him and Akima in the aftermath.

Its certainly a frontier world, but it IS his frontier world. And from a game perspective, it gives a reason to at least hint that he hasn't vanished in a puff of unplayability.

Isn't he an atheist? Wouldn't that be like giving Carl Sagan a religion? (Though Sagan and Pagan are just one letter off, man I wish I was a lunatic Christian with a sign) Anyway, the game would take place long before he could be deified by anyone, then again, he did build a fucking planet, no reason he couldn't have some worshipers.

How about the reverse, a group of extremists looking to cause trouble for Bob because they see Cale as the Anti-God for creating a fucking planet. Bombings, assassination attempts, sabotage. But they're still Human. Your move now, old chaps.
    >> Commissar Ivan 03/25/10(Thu)19:31 No.8786873
It really needs a bit more of a storyline than "Humans make planet you go get humans to live on planet".

Is that crossover idea actually going to happen, or shall I wax poetic about it for no reason?

So if The Drej are pure energy, wouldn't they just automatically conduct into the hull of a ship or any metal object they came in contact with?
    >> Anonymous 03/25/10(Thu)20:11 No.8787485
    Alright, lets get some opinions:

Are there any Drej left? (I'm inclined to say Yes) What do some of them want? What do others want? And are solid projectile weapons of any use against them?

Alien races? There's a lot of them, let's get them pictured so we can stat them.

More information about New Earth City, Planet Bob! I imagine that Titan is still accessible beneath the surface of the planet, since it had the DNA samples of everything (and presumably the artificial wombs for them too.) Is N.E.C a giant rusty slum from all the colony drifters landing there?

I don't think there are even solid projectile weapons around anymore. Everyone in the film used an energy based weapon.
    >> Anonymous 03/25/10(Thu)20:16 No.8787557
    >>8787514
Or so we assume. Maybe the books explains it better, but I don't see anything saying anything either way in the movie. Sure, not standard projectile fire as we know, but they might be railguns.

In the book, Korso is specifically noted for favoring an old slug-thrower, primarily because it works better on Drej than frikkin' laser beams.

It also helps explain why, when the gravity is turned off, he flies in the opposite direction as he shoots.

    Right then, idea time.

Just as the Drej Mothership was being absorbed to power the genesis reaction, a mechanism that the Drej had forgotten existed sent out a distress beacon to the main Drej fleet, of which it was in fact only a mid-size vessel. They're coming to investigate now.

    >>8787971
Hmm, in the book, the Drej are just as homeless as the humans, which I think adds a lot to their character. But I definitely still want more drej in the setting. Maybe it didn't contact a fleet ala the Reapers, but instead contact other conclaves of Drej drifters. And not all of them really think that blowing up another race's homeworld was a very good idea at all. But good luck convincing anyone that you're not a genocidal hivemind, and are instead just a communitarian hivemind member with free will.

Be a fine game, but we're currently looking at a setting that is set after the end of the film, working to populate Planet Bob with the scattered humans. Do you happen to remember if the Valkyrie survived the film?
