it had been autosaging for hours once it finally 404ed, no one but me seemed to want to start the next thread.

I'm going to mock up the Technician 101 though for a general technique that gives player access to repair and as well as a 'microboost' ability that technicians can apply to their gear.

It was mentioned last thread that we should put up a little blurb about what is velocity when we start a thread, but as this one didn't come with the logo on it, rather as a response to the old thread 404ing it didn't get one.

I'm guessting Stopwatch/Timer, GPS Map, Taxi Meter (tied into GPS, for figuring out charges for courier deliveries), credit card reader (for the same), Velo City equivalents of facebook & youtube, and a camera.

Technician 101

Trick: Customization [Unique]
Roll Smarts x2 to customize your Ride. This cannot affect another person's Ride, this can only affect one of your Rides per use. Success = You gain a banked number of +1 bonuses equal to your Smarts to a relevant skill, these bonuses may only be used once per tic and only when using the customized ride.

Technician should probably start a bit more basic than that, yet cost a lot less EXP to increase in rank at the lower levels, so like:

101 - Customisation - Can modify gear for minor boosts to style points
201 - Repair - Obvious. fix durability of your gear outside of just swapping parts.
301 - Tuning - Make minor adjustments to your gear to move small amounts of stats (like 2 points at most or something) from one category to another on said piece of gear.
401 - Crafting - Build your own gear.
>> Izuminous !!iqtVysYzxlJ 05/08/10(Sat)21:40 No.9698077
>>9697774
I can see that working, and being streamlined enough if it covers all gear types. So someone with Repair could duct-tape together a broken deck, unbrick a cellphone and spotweld a patch onto some homemade armor with equal capability.

I'm guessing tuning and customizing don't cover stuff that any jackoff could do though, like loosening/tightening trucks or slapping a sticker on your deck, right?
>> Anonymous 05/08/10(Sat)21:55 No.9698288
>>9697774
Except for your scale being off you have close to the aright of it.

Trick: Repair [Unique]
You may now repair your own and other people's gear. This cuts the cost of repair in half for restoring durability damage. If a piece of gear is Damaged in a scene you may attempt one Smartsx2 Roll to patch the issue, restoring the equipment temporarily to usability. This takes 3 tics.

Its simply that Snow Crash, Jet Set Radio, Air gear and a couple of other things have provided useful inspiration for aspects of this setting, and now it has been developed. its turned out that YT fits in pretty much perfectly. Plus, everyone loves YT.

When the time comes this will be awesome. We will want a number of mirrored yet unique tricks for interdisciplinary purchase between cities. I'm going to wait for the alpha playtesting and maybe even the beta to be out first before championing the cause of one of the City Splats.
>> Anonymous 05/09/10(Sun)12:25 No.9709785
>>9709208

I think most of what we need towards the "Core" book, which is the basic rules as I'm gonnacall it, is mostly waiting on Nothing Man. What I believe can be worked on is stories, better pictures the the crap I've posted, and various other things. Personally I'd like to see more plot-hook things. I mentioned the Corgi Pizza Shop, which would hire runners to deliver pizza to people in the other thread. So I imagine things like that that can help fuel a session or four of gaming.

>>9709498

I'm almost thinking that some of the other disciplines should be hybrids or branches off of other ones. Like instead of learning how to flip as a runner, you learn how to match your hands, heel-hook and swing to crimp to plant the ending as a rock climber.

It wouldn't replace a full core "class" but be an offshoot that someone could go for if they wanted. Not entirely sure how it would work. Or if it is its own class, then several tricks would be applicable to the others. The Bread and Butter of Tricks.
>> Zhuren 05/09/10(Sun)12:44 No.9710043
>>9709785
We do have general tricks available but I do think that there needs to be shared Tricks across interdisciplinary techniques with minor tweaks and perhaps a lowered XP Cost for obvious corollaries.

The City Splats will also bring up games that run very differently than others. SnowFall I see as being much more about group interaction, your Skii-mobile is how you quickly get -up- the mountain, the Crew rides on a trailer. Need to climb a sheer cliff? The Climber goes first and anchors the rope so everyone else can get up.

I agree with now being the time for fluff, the time to beseech drawfags to make us material for the Core Rulebook. Rules bloat (which I'm really good at it seems) Needs to wait till playtesting is underway. I'll be doing some writefagging today methinks.

I saw it as Roll Under Stunt Hazard, myself.

Hazard meaning "the absence or lack of predictability; chance; uncertainty."

Anyway, an idea of mine:
- Style points convert to XP.
- XP buys new Techniques (Trick groups).
- What if you could pay Style to use any Trick once?
>> Zhuren 05/09/10(Sun)13:12 No.9710507
>>9710387
This would probably be a good way to handle the untrained technique issue, save that you would spend Rank Points instead of Style points. So as you rack up style you have more chances to do things you've never done before, being more in tune to the Soul of the Street.

Spending XP to do tricks is... I don't like that design. It disincentivizes risk taking.

What Is A Crew?

A Crew is a group of individuals brought together to do things. In our case a Crew is a group of PCs as well as the smallest devision of Gang organization. Crews come together for many reasons, some may all belong to the same gang and operate out of a small geographic area, others may be composed of friends from disparate gangs operating in the No-Mans-Land of unclaimed territory, some Crews might even be Gangs in and unto themselves, looking to carve a chunk out of Velo.

Now the idea of a mixed gang Crew might be odd to some when you consider the current peace it makes sense. Mixed Crews are a way of strengthening the ties between various Gangs without threatening the power structure of any as they are only allowed to hold territory outside the major centers of power. Some Gangs participate or even encourage this, others do not. It's also a good way of marginalizing potential political threats as it gets them out of Home-Base and puts them out on a Set where they cant bring trouble back. Unless they do, thus becoming the stuff of revolutions.

A Crew operates out of a Set, a Set is their territory or area of control. Single Gang Crews are liable to have a tag for their set done smaller and below their Gang tag while Mixed Crews will most often have their own unique Tag. A Set is only as secure as you can make it though and attempting to control too large an area will doubtless make you foes.

>>9710507

There is a MASSIVE PAPERWORK INCREASE variant, where you "buy" the trick after putting enough Style into it.

But encouraging risk-taking - there's a bitch of an issue.

Punishing caution mechanically would be one way of doing it.
Something like "if you don't use a Trick each tick, lose X Style"?

Another idea: Combo Modifier.
- Let's say while airborne, you can do a grab as a -X wager.
- But some grabs are easier to do while airborne than others!
- What if each grab had its own +Y modifier when used mid-air?

Dealing with other Crews/Gangs

Velo is currently under Gang truce, but that doesn't mean for a second that constant conflict is not the every-day state of things. Borders have to be constantly redefined as each Gang seeks to count bloodless coup over the others. To this end and to protect the status quo, Gang leaders having understood at some undefinable point (or perhaps very definable) that the more things change the more they -need- to stay the same to protect the Gang Compact, there is one universally known rule amongst Punks: When in Rome do as the Romans do.

This means you obey the rules of the Set, applying mostly to single Gang controlled territory and only to a lesser extent autonomous Crew controlled Sets. Almost all sets have a BYOB rule in that poaching of Set resources without permission is rather heavily frowned upon save by those precious few who just don't give a fuck.

Knowing all the rules to a Gang controlled Set is, under normal circumstances, a Smarts x2 roll with knowing the rules to a smaller Set is just a Smarts roll (there will be things to increase this). Some of the nicer and more open Sets will post their rules in AR for visitors to be warned. Otherwise just be polite and keep your head down is the best advice for avoiding conflict.

>>9710818
I dunno if I like that first idea and here is the flaw with your second.

The game is supposed to play fast and easy and Style points convert to XP. You have a limited Energy Pool from which to do tricks, jump, etc. -If- you needed to do a trick every turn to not Lose Experiance people would have to make a roll every turn, slowing down the game dramatically.

As is unspent Energy = Experiance you could have gained but didnt seems enough of an incentive to do crazy shit, in my opinion.

As for the Binary Grab/Trick interaction that's already covered. While airborn you spend tics of Hangtime on tricks. Lets say a Backflip costs two Hangtime and a Method Grab costs one, a Method Backflip would then cost three tics and require you roll and succeed on both to reap your Style.

Or, at least, thats how I -imagine- it will go.

Most likely it will be one -or- the other, you can have an evocative tag that is perhaps not classically trained art and visa-versa, and yes baseline Greys are supposed to be defeatable with spray paint alone.

Should've put that second point in quotation marks.

Oh well; another idea: Meaningful Stats.
- Muscle, Momentum, etc. are certainly easy to understand, but aren't the most flavourful out there.
- You're a rebel against a drab society, becoming more incredible as you do amazing things.
- What if your stats were related colour terms, like Hue, Contrast, Shade, Intensity, etc.? Then as your stats increase, you get a stronger colour, moving further away from Greyness.

Corollary idea: Grey-Defeating Paint.
- By definition, Grey doesn't really have Shade or Intensity or whatever, so those values = 0.
- By definition, spray paints have Shades and Intensities and whatever, so those values = X.
- What if Greys became not-Greys, or defeated, if they were tagged with spray paint? 0+X = X, after all.

I think you underestimate the terrible inertia of greyness. Even in todays society the mundane is a chronic disease, Greys are that turned up several notches. Grey is negative color, not black which is a null value, it is a soul sucking force of homogenization. Painting someone enough times will not change this.

However! There is a chance for people to interact with Punks to go native, to break free of the staggering weight of grey in their lives. At -least- two of the signature characters are Ex-Grey, some possibly even leading Grey double lives.

Don't get me wrong I -adore- the Meaningful Stats concept. If it was up to me I'd instate it as the foundation of something akin to Virtues from Exalted.

It's not up to me, Sorry!

what you can do with a trick should only be limited by what the player can think of doing with it and what the MC will allow. even the logical restrictions are unneessary - with the right stats, equipment, a good flow and a bit of luck almost anything is possible. and if its not, the MC can just call shenanigans.

But yeah, style combos- man, if you get enough of this shit just starts to go right. Volcano Gang
The Volcano Gang is a study in seeming contradictions, comprised of an impossible membership in a rather unlikely place they often represent the best and worst of Punks at the same time they are as startlingly unpredictable as an organization as the geological phenomena they take as name.

Origins:
The Volcano Gang are comprised mainly of the children of Newtown. When the 'Bright New Future of Velo!' campaign was released middle and upper-middle class families moved into the condos and apartments first completed in droves, hoping to get in at a good price and ride the wave of cheap entry-price housing to good living.

What they got was a failed metropolitan center lacking many of the key elements required to actually be functional. Over-crowding in half-complete schools often meant long bus-rides for Newtown kids and a lack of entertainment proved fertile breeding ground for the Punk movement.

Here's how it works: Every 5 style points you get, either from tricks, or doing normal maneuvers in a particularly risky way, You move up on the style rankings, going from F to SS

Now, every rank up from F has a value (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) this value is how many style points you can spend on a single action to improve its chances of succeeding, if you are at that rank.

In other words, Take risks, to make it so you don't have to take risks when it is CRITICAL.

Anywho.

Volcano Gang Origins Cont:
Punks had previously known and used Mt Vulcan before the Volcano Gang came into existence, however its out of the way location on the south-west island made it so there was no identifiable Set. Over time, however, with the influx of Newtown kids it became more and more apparent that there needed to be. Scuffles began breaking out over the smallest of insults and the entire mountain bubbled with molten aggression. Luckily a Crew of vision stepped up to the plate and began to unite the area under their banner.

Taylor Fanelli was the head of the Firewater Crew. He was obsessed with the 1920s, 30s, and 40s almost as much as he was obsessed with the punk scene. Some people say he was equally good in any of the four disciplines, others say he was a boarder strictly, arguments say he was a runner, what -is- known is that his handle was Speakeasy and he could, and did, charm the pants off of anyone.

A suggestion:

The Club - Deep in the heart of the city, there is a building. On one of the floors of that building, there is a club. The interesting thing about this club is that, in the building, there are no entrances into it. Elevators don't stop at that floor, and stairways just skip it. Normally, this would be terrible building design, but The Club has a reason. It's made for Punks. The only ways of entering being the windows (a few of them always open) and the air ducts, The Club has become something of a safehaven for punks, mostly Runners. Over time, it has become a sort of neutral ground for the gangs to meet without having to worry about rivalries. An attack on The Club would be punished by members of all gangs, something the cops learned the hard way a couple years ago. Since then, they've left it relatively alone.

Volcano Gang Origins Cont 2:

Speakeasy and the Firewater Crew built the Volcano gang with an eye for flair, fair play, burning passion and Red Hot Jazz, their leader's style of snappy dress and idiosyncratic use of the words doll, moll, and daddy-o were infectious. He possessed an unending enthusiasm and exuberance that the Punks couldn't help but want to be a part of, he was a bright flare of Red in a greying Newtown and people clung to that passion and desire. Conflict in and around Vulcan came to a head in those days and then, for a while, the mountain was silent.

A few months later the Firewater Crew re-opened the mountain with a week-long party, inviting all the names of the day to come and join them at Vesuvius, the Jazz Club in the very heart of the mountain. The Punks in the area had been transformed into Volcanoes, burning with passion while at the same time doing their best to stay cool daddy-o, the mountain itself now a magnitude safer for all the remodeling done to make it safe for constant inhabitation.

Speakeasy lost his life to the game though (if there is a historical gang war period of Velo he fell during it) and much time has passed in his wake. While the themes he loved still run strong things are a bit more modern in Vesuvius these days, where once streamed Jazz now plays Techno-Jazz fusion, styles have been updated to hybrid fashionable styles with zoot-suits but even this is just natural evolution of a group who at their core found family in a city filled with broken capitalist dreams.

- What if you could use random passers-by as rails or walls? Or using another Punk as a ladder, etc.

Idea Part 2: " . . . But You Shouldn't Use Them."
- Using random passers-by as ramps hurts them.
- Greys don't like random passers-by getting hurt.
- What if Tricking off people made the Police want to catch you more? Crazy, I know.

Troll elsewhere, this is a /tg/-gets-shit-done thread.

Volcano Gang Relations:

The Volcano Gang, being geographically isolated and uncontested in the main for their Sets, are on fair to good terms with nearly everyone. By that same token they are also one of the first Gangs to throw down in competition or fight over just about anything, so long as there are no hard feelings. Their membership is large and often times the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing, making their actions seem a little schizophrenic from the outside. However, most Vulcan Crews traveling through other Sets are nearly always polite and amiable and the rules on Volcano Sets are lax and easy to follow on top of having an open door policy, no group is expressly forbidden from visiting The Mountain and bans on individuals are rare.

Their greatest allies are the Dappers, with whom the more high-minded members (this also subtly coincides with leadership positions) tend to share interests and enjoyments, and the Fireworks, who despite being crazy and a little dangerous(sometimes more than) burn with the same fiery passion that the inhabitants of Vesuvius tout as a core value.

Valued Guests or Minor Allies would be Rosecrans, The Vampires, and The Neons, Vampires being the oddity amongst them but there is a general opinion of 'they're cute' in Vesuvius which earns the small gang a bit of preferential treatment and access to high-visibility tagging spots to practice their art.

If the Volcanoes can be said to have enemies in the other gangs it would be The Big Nasties and Charlie Company, which really ends up being spawned from a personal problem more often than not.

The MAIN gangs are:
The Big Nasties (croc-men from sewers, strong)
The Black Roses (all-women, sexy, and stabby)
The Bodhisattvas (spiritual board punks)
The Fireworks (kooky folks that like explosives and rockets; their leader is presumably Letz Shake)
The Volcano Gang (Ritzy red-clad motherfuckers)
Urban Tribals (Street Kaminas)
and The High Fliers (The most general gang)

Was there ever a dark ages/gang war period when things were not so NOBLEBRIGHT that caused the gangs to put their organizational structures in place? I suggest it because it broadens the emotional spectrum and gives a sense of loss, regret, and a determination to never let it happen again be fostered in the upper-echelons of the gangs while providing a good excuse for the reason why violence is not the first resort for petty squabbles.

Also giving the combat and grimdark monkeys an alternate timeline to enjoy their playstyle in the setting.

The High Fliers aren't exactly generic, as it were. They're unique in the Pride they have in their communities, and the responsibility they take over the areas they inhabit.

The High Fliers is different to most gangs, in that its core gang- The High Fliers themselves, operating out of Skyhigh Apartments, don't exercise much control over individual crews or sets, and don't demand much fealty. They simply ask that all gangs under their wings follow their standards, and act as a service and an asset to their communities. Make tags beautiful, make tricks awe inspiring and make your activities punk, yes, but punk people can be proud of.

Membership of the core of Skyhigh is only allowed to residents, but well established members in the affiliated gangs and crews who honour Skyhighs ideals have a place in their heirachy, and Punks from all over go to Skyhigh for the awesome rooftops, as the High Fliers bar entry to none.

Here's what I have on 'em.

The Bodhisattvas - Boarder bros, fairly bro-like looking fellows, baseball caps, t-shirts, jeans-- urban gear, with the buddhist and hindu sorts of hints every so often in their outfits- think urban monks. Thier tag is the eight spoked wheel (Dharma wheel).

They hang out here:Shangri-la Spa - Once a luxury destination for the wealthy, filled with pools and gentle slopes, stairs and pagoda's. Then city grew a little too big, and a little too loud, and its owners sold it off. And then a skate crew bought it, and turned it into their personal funhouse. They charge a small price for any to enter, although friends get in free, and sometimes run tournies and competitions. They don't often get challenges, since they're aces at their home turf, but it happens on occasion, and once or twice they've had to fight off some serious opposition. Shangri'la has lots of steep stairways and railings, strange slopes and curves, now empty hot tubs and ornamental ponds, while the omnipresent speakers, once used to play relaxing sounds, are now jacked into the radio 24/7, blasting beats from the omnipresent swarm of movers and shakers.

Also this (Courtesy of Nothing Man)

You ever heard of the guy that formed the Bodhisattva movement? I don't think he was actually buddhist, he wasn't even a boarder when he started out. He started on a dare, his boarder friend bet that he couldn't get more than a meter into the air in one of the pools. So he skated around for a while, just getting the hang of it, when his friend pushed him into the pool- He stumbled around and when he actually got into the air his pose seemed to change around. He kinda' froze up and hit the bottom of the pool, back-first. He won the bet though- he somehow got over a meter into the air with his crappy posture; He started coming to Shangri-la every day, and, over time, people started coming to watch him skate: that's how the Bodhisattvas started. Because he started getting just INSANE air. People started joining in, hopping into different areas of the pool, skating around different areas of the spa, they started asking the guy who he was, why he was here, all that sort of stuff.

“My name's John. I came here because I learned how it feels to fly.”

By this point he was able to reach about 10 meters into the air, the Skyhigh folks occasionally came down just to check out John and his students. The Bodhisattvas from here on forth grew in a different way from most gangs- The Bodhisattva turf only rarely grows past the Spa because when they race they usually turn down the rewards, insisting the only seek enlighentment through speed. Mostly the only times the Bodhisattvas get a foothold elsewhere is if there's a missionary or converts or... really, It's more of a religion than a gang.

“Go with wings.”

Volcano Gang Notable Faces

Nicholas Roarke - Majig - Gang Leader

Majig is an oddity amongst the Volcano Gang and perhaps that's the reason he rose to the top. In a group that holds heat in high esteem hes cool-headed, in a world dominated by high flying tricks hes grounded. Oh thats not to say he doesn't have a temper or that hes any less a Volcano waiting to blow than any other member, just that he controls it better.

On the scale of Punks he's a little bit older than most but not by too many years, a little more distinguished, a little more mature. Perhaps thats why he doesn't have to raise his voice to be heard these days, or how he can stir those ossified passions in a set with just a few well chosen words.

Majig is a Technician. That's not to say he isn't a consummate Blader or that his skill is anything other than top-notch, but that's not who he is or what he does best, nor why people follow him. Instead you'll find him in the Vesuvius shop most days, tinkering with various projects to eke the most out of the high tech gear that goes through his hands. Rumor has it he actually is one of the main inventors for (insert company of note here)

One thing is for sure though, he's currently the heart of Volcano tradition, the definition of a smooth daddy-o. Dedicated to maintaining tradition he represents the binding force of family to the punks, a guidepost of responsible leadership.

Hes been known to show favoritism to up-and coming Volcanoes of note through gifts of gear, normally of the kind that one never needs or wants to upgrade. A double edged sword this, it often makes others attempt to acquire such rare gifts.

Volcano Gang Notable Faces (2)

Jennifer Crabtree - Slyder - Volcano Gang Rumbler.

Slyder looks like she belongs in the Volcano gang. Wearing suspenders, a bright red sleeveless blouse, and pressed cargo khakis she cuts an iconic figure with piercing green eyes, her shock of red hair and freckles, mad grin, and a single middle finger. No one doubts that Slyder is a little bonkers, she and her crew (which contains a few of the non-runner Volcanoes, a higher percentage than any other crew) are the Rumblers of the Vesuvius Set.

Characterized by their willingness to do the most insane and some would say dumb shit they are also the most willing to fight. Not just willing but -eager- to fight about the important stuff and over the dumb shit too, the necessary evils of gang life. They are the hammer and they are brandished often as a reminder to others, as a crew their combat prowess is no laughing matter and Slyder the best fighter of them.

No one knows exactly how Slyder became a Volcano. She just was there, and it was like she had always been there, like that spot had just been empty and unfulfilled, a hole in the soul of the gang till she emerged. There is a manic energy that seeps from her, inspiring and terrifying at the same time. She doesn't want to run the gang, nor is she their best leader, but without her Vesuvius would ring hollow and empty, or so the inhabitants feel. She comes and goes without word or warning, disappearing for days but always showing up right on time. She embodies the passion and soul of the Volcano gang and the irresponsibility of fire, foil to her cool headed leader.

Slyder (cont.)

Jennifer Crabtree on the other hand is afraid of heights. She's the assistant editor (I might make her an intern, heh) at a medium sized publishing house that puts out fiction books and e-novels. She's a modest girl, a hard worker, cute even, but bland in that way of most quiet people.

Very well educated she is an avid reader, her apartment often a mess of strewn novels, believing wholeheartedly in the sanctity of ink on paper when most have transitioned to e-novels. Recently she has been courted by a minor but well enough known author of Punk Fiction who is known to be a bit Anti-Punk in his characterization of gang life. She likes him enough, they've been on a few dates.

Naturally being the same person as Slyder she frets terribly over what would happen if he found out -she- was a notorious gang member, even if it is a dis-associative personality.

She wants her career and loves books and this dichotomy of personality will have to come to a head -someday-...

Zone is making me post this, but I don't think it will have any impact.
If the "high Fliers" is now a coalition of Gangs based around the Original High Fliers gang, with all the affiliate gangs sharing Values etc with the Original, then in effect their no longer a "Gang" as such but more an Composite entity like Spice. Its merely that while Spice has Associated Members within other Gangs, all of whom share the "Ideals" of Spice, the Members of the High Fliers alliance are Gangs rather than Individuals.
Also, should this be true, then shouldn't there be a separate name for the Original High Fliers gang, and the Alliance they've apparently spawned.

Volcano Gand and Velo:

The Volcano Gang is one of the actively political gangs in Velo. They are known to tussle with Greys often, engage in civil disobedience, and sometimes outright corporate sabotage against the corrupt and restrictive elements in Velo. This puts them in a strange position as they have to balance between getting their point across and maintaining a relatively low visibility. Lately elements in Vesuvius have discussed starting a splinter faction to take credit for their actions and make sure heat stays away from Mt. Vulcan. Neither Majig nor Slyder have any official comment.

In Newcity, however, the Volcanoes deal with the day to day. Crews are known in their sets, especially with the flamboyant and anachronistic dress. The citizens of the under-construction husk of a city for their part have very individual reactions ranging from full support to open derision. Unlike the High Fliers or the Deadmen Volcanoes can never count on the civilians of their set to be friendly. That could change in either direction pretty quickly, especially if corporate sponsorship money trickled down into revitalizing Newtowns economy and construction.

Mostly because I also want to flesh out what I'm going to call the Bone Rivets, who would be the doctors/medics of Velo for the punks.

The Medics of the system already have some fluff in the rar but you should feel free to throw more out there.

I would say we want to start at the top though and work our way down, defining how the 'Major Players' interact with eachother gives us a good grounding point for the smaller gang interactions.

Idea 6: Relevant Rename.
- "Greys" works fine for the police, but it also works well for the paper-pushing corporate drones.
- The police are an indistinct mass of law enforcement.
- What if the police were the Fuzz and the ordinary citizens the Greys?

Idea 7: "Dude, Not Cool!"
- Violence is a solution that most Punks want to avoid.
- Blowing Greys (or Fuzz) away with a shotgun isn't as respectable as outwitting them.
- What if your social standing was your Cool, with violence literally losing your Cool (gaining Cool for Spicers)?

Hmm... discussing things with a friend, I'm not sure I like the direction this fluff progress is taking.

"Fleshing out" is ending up changing a lot of things for no readily apparent reason, and there's a Lot of arbitrary, somewhat annoying power structures which don't really fit the anarchic feel of punk.

Why are there now major gangs and crews? Why do we need to define sets? Why do we have more and more layers of organisation within Punk culture that we Really don't need?

Lets just stop and take a step back here. We're getting Far too close and fiddly with these little details that don't matter.

I don't like the idea of the current major gangs, in how Major is being interpreted. Make these gangs the focus of the current fluff? Fine. Make them More Important than the other gangs? I don't think it fits. I don't like the idea of large, powerful gangs across most of the city. We should scale it down.

You can Still focus on those seven in the book. But they Aren't huge zone spanning empires. They're just one, mid to large, ordinary gang, with a specific zone and purview, and I think things worked better that way. It left more grey area for MC's and PC's to play with, it left more room for the imagination.

To everyone developing fluff for VeloCITY, please read this, think about it, and then take a step back

The major gangs aren't anywhere as large as that- they simply have quite a few members compared to other ones, and 'crews' are just to seperate 3-10 person bands of speedsters from those of actual creditable size.

I agree that the actual levels of connection between the gangs is fucking stupid, but them all meeting up and going out for beer is a good idea- and the balance exists as something more of a medium between the police and gangs, a center of information for the city as a whole- not just punks, not just cops, everything

I've always viewed these gangs not as the major ones, so much as bigger players. They're a lot like The Warriors, who controlled Coney Island, or The Riffs. They were both major gangs that people knew the names of if you were in the culture. It didn't matter where in the city you were from. That's what is meant by Major Gangs I believe.

They're more important because they're more famous, not because of straight power or things like that. They're also going to be the Core 7, I think, with a lot of the other, smaller crews supporting. I imagine other big, important gangs like the Deadmen will get a mention, but not a true focus for now in this book.

I don't fully endorse all of the ideas- honestly, I'm probably just going to cherry pick ideas, and some of them will be completely discarded.

The Volcano Gang is nothing more than a fair level of runners with a few damn good ones who participate in contests, fliffing the money about and bragging- they all just hang out at the peak of Mt. Vulcan, nowhere else, anywhere else is mostly sightseeing or a member just chilling out with some friends elsewhere.

They're the ritzy bastards who stick to their club. It would make no sense whatsoever to make them any more or less than that.

I suppose I should come out and explain the why of the direction I took in attempting to flesh out the fluff.

First I'd like us to look at LA, current day. How many gangs are there? Tons, but you are pretty much split between Crips, Bloods, and MS13. I grew up near Grape Street(A Crip Set) and have family who roll Northface(Same). Minor gangs just pick up the scraps at the edges of prominent sets, organization is done top down as I have previously delineated but often not with any singular leader.

That's todays reality.

I see no reason why when injected with massive quantities of NOBLEBRIGHT that would really change. There is power in numbers, money in numbers, influence and security. Enforcing a fractioned and disparate nature on punk gangs makes -no- decent sense as all it would take is one gang with any mediocrum of ambition and it turns into open war of the worst and most brutal kind.

Organization means enforceable order, enforceable order is required for peace.

>>9716364

...Yeah. Except, it doesn't fit the tone of the setting. Aptness and tone trumps realism any day, and anarchic gangs of punks are different from warring criminal groups fighting over territory.

Black Rose hidden weapons are stuff like pepper spray sprayers built into elbow pads that they set off when passing close by someone, or tazers built into the heels/toes of their kicks/blades to give their kicks an extra edge. Nothing really fatal, but still hurts like fuck.

But Balance cant possibly be everywhere at once, self-policing is the most effective way to keep a Gang Truce active.

I suppose I should then start asking questions.

Oh. I can see that working, or in fact being one of the more common ones.

Guy blades up to a group of Roses, challenging them to a race. They don't see any gang signs on him, and don't think he looks good enough, so one of them just pauses mid-text message and tazes him with her phone before they wander off.

Balance doesn't NEED to be everywhere at once.
They can control the other gangs through the Threat of their intervention.
>> Corgi 05/09/10(Sun)19:22 No.9716814
>>9716515

The way I intended the Balance was for that reason actually. They have almost a direct line to any major player in the city, and can call in the favors of many others. They also have a few very very powerful, dangerous and skilled punks that simply would not get messed with. The other gangs aren't afraid of just The Balance has done, but what they are capable of.

They don't do things though. They're basically storytellers and historians. They want to know all the drama, all the comedy and all the twists in the story of the punks of Velo. They do this by asking people to play to their game, having muscled their way in and offered more then enough incentive to play by the rules.

Don't play by what the Balance wants? Suddenly they pull the medics off, the fame. You can't spread the word nearly so well as The Balance can. So a lot of fame and media is lost on the culture. Knowledge of formal invitations and information on the other gangs is lost.

Life's a whole lot better with Balance, and a pain in the ass when you don't have it. Especially since you might find out that the police suddenly know where you are and all of those activities you've been up to. Maybe.

Also, it's silly and fun, and lets there be a reason for no violence and for tournaments and whatnot.
>> Zhuren 05/09/10(Sun)19:22 No.9716817
>>9716531

I guess so.

I suppose I don't see the point of starting at a realistic level of play and character capability at chargen if realism isn't catered to.

The gangs, even if small, are still criminal no matter how you slice it. Between vandalism, traffic ordinances, underage drinking, curfew violation, destruction of private property, possession of stolen goods, and all the other nonsense you'll get up to in a general session you're still firmly on the 'wrong' side of the law.

I mean even in Air Gear you have groups like Genesis who are huge and made up of sub gangs...

I guess all I'm trying to say is I can change the fluff, I can and will write from this perspective, I just don't understand why as it is in my perspective highly limiting to the setting.

oddly enough, looking through the list, the one about balancing on your head well seems to be the worst offender given the setting, go figure. I guess the swallow and spit up small objects thing is also incredibly useful given the possibility of playing a courier, but unless it's an actual trick you can buy, i'd say it's fine here. Oh, and disarming nukes is so far outside the usual scope of the setting I'd say a 1d100 chance of having those skills is probably fine, too. But whatever, it's the concept, not the specific list, that I think really might have a place here. On the other hand this does totally fall within the realm of things you could just roleplay, but I like random silly tables.

I completely agree with this and this is the model I had for Balance in my own mind. In my interpretation they were the instigators of peace, one of the main reasons the gang truce stays in place.

I just don't see how that changes between larger and smaller gang sizes and scopes.

Of course, this also means that the Balence is, technically, in the most unstable position of all.
Pun intended.
Their power is based in their connections and influence within many gangs, but at the same time this means that they are reliant on the other Gangs for their power. All that it would take to displace them from their position of power is for those gangs providing their influence to turn against them.
Meaning that the Balence can crush any gang attempting to rise against them, but must also be careful not to alienate the other gangs in doing so.
Lends itself nicely to the image of them as subtle manipulators, being the Balence of power, Rather than overt controllers.

Dude, sorry, but... Give it up. Your ideas have been presented, discussed, and deemed not fitting. That should be the end of it.

This is 4chan. This is anarchy with a few notable figures, in this case, Nothing Man. Both the mass of anon and the guy running this project have said your ideas do not fit. Not necessarily that they're Bad. But they don't fit the established setting.

So, stop banging on about them.

If you want, use them yourself, write up an alternate setting or, heck, create an alternate game. But don't keep bringing them up or people will just start getting annoyed.

The Why of them getting rejected doesn't matter. They were. Move on.

So I went back and took a look at this post and I realized something.

I was too Black to be writing the whole cloth of this.

I grew up as a Black kid in LA and -that- is where the problem lies.

Where I see -Gangs- comprised of punks everyone else is seeing -Punks- putting together their little gang. My experience is tainting my perspective. I have lots of story concepts surrounding Gangs and Gang life, to me VeloCITY replaces he unsavory elements of those narratives (death, guns, drugs, degradation of women) and replaces them with Bright and Happy elements of Techno, Parkour, Tournaments, and Crazy Mad Skillz.

They say write what you know and thats what I unknowingly did.

This is in contrast to everyone else who is coming from the narrative of the Punk, being a rebel and sticking it to the man. Both settings are -intensely- NOBLEBRIGHT but come from entirely different angles.

As I wish to continue to contribute to the project fluff that is both relevant and on tone the Why of it is the only thing that matters. If I can figure out the why, and I think I did, I can in the future write fluff more in line with the design philosophy.

This is basically it. You're coming at this from the gang perspective, but that's not what is informing the setting. The setting is based on the punk/graffiti aesthetic - punk and graffiti as a style of art and a cultural touchstone.

Adventure Hooks:

The Grey's Suits are shooting a movie, which requires them to cordon off large areas of the city for filming. Movies and shows being filmed on location in Velo City is not new, but some footage was leaked. What they're shooting is a work of fiction, intended for release as a documentary about the 'Punk Lifestyle', painting it as a life of crime, violence, drug abuse, and somehow even slavery. Production needs to come to a halt before this massive pile of propaganda hits theaters.

The President of Supersonic has been kidnapped by a mysterious new gang that covers themselves from head to toe. Are you a bad enough Crew to rescue the President?

Alabaster Inc., the company that brought you Conformatable Clothes and Blandview Monochrome Glasses, is marketing Monotonie, an outdoors/indoors paint that is 100% Graffiti proof. It comes in Gray Gray, Grayer Gray, and Grayest Gray. The genius behind it has arrived in town with talks to the public authorities to have it put in all over town. If there's any way of beating the stuff, he'd be the one to know.

By definition Genesis is exactly why I wrote the fluff in the way I did, and also why I could not think of Velo's current state as anything other than post-gang war, from the perspective of someone coming from the gang aspected angle the current truce (which isn't a truce because there has never been war because they aren't actually in a position to fight each other for unification or resources, eeessshh this is hard to wrap my brain around)

So if is how is(and it is, I checked), then Punk Crews aren't going to be the only gangs in the city. It was already stated that the mafia and yakuza etc would still exist they just wouldn't interact with the punks very much (I thought this was a Balance and self-enforced rule, no it's just unnecessary) bit then on top of -that- there would be your normal earthbound crips and bloods corollaries. Tons of conflict and story hooks to be had in the interaction therein.

First off, when did It start? And Who started it?
Spice isn't an old Gang, but its not Young. Even before the Rise of the Interwebs, and its plethora of Video Streaming sites, Spice was a small Community of Extreme Punks who were Drawn together by their Mutual Love of nearly Killing themselves in the Perfection of the most extravagant Tricks.
Ok, that was a Bit Verbose. To make it Short, Spice started out as a Street Gang for Reckless Idiots.
Back then, Spice was a far more conventional Gang, traversing the Streets of Velo as a Group and meeting Up to Show off their Latest Tricks. Their membership was Small, close Knit, made up of highly Skilled Bladers, Bikers and Boarders. Runners didn't start Joining til Later, after the Equipment Nessasary for Extreme Runner Tricks (beyond jumping off buildings into dumpsters) Was invented. They never had Turf, but there were a few "Spice Cafes" where they would meet up and perform Tricks, Mostly in and around Carver Canyon. Spicer meetings were mostly dominated by Trick Contests, with members Vying for position by performing more and more Dangerous Stunts, until one party would Drop out. Few recordings of these Early Days exist, even among the Vast Archive of videos Kept by veteran Spicers.

However, these simple (lol) days did not last, and soon the Spice we know today started to Take Shape. And the First Step was the Creation of the, now legendary, Message board:

The board was original started by a Team of 5 Veteran Spicers, Jolokia, Dr Tobasco, Big Pepper, Cajun and RHC. Precisely which of them First came up With the Idea is a subject of Some Debate, one which Will likely never See a Definite Answer. After all, only Two of them are Still Alive, and of the pair only One, Dr Tobasco, Remains in Spice.
The Board began as a Way to keep Spicers Informed of meeting times, contest dates and, Of course, the Current "Hierarchy" within the Gang. However, a few Key Members, such as Jolokia, started to Post videos from the Meetings up, so that Those Spicers who couldn't make it to the meetings could Still watch them.
The first Spicer to post a Video that Wasn't from a Meeting was, perhaps predictably, Jolokia. More Spicers followed suit, Posting videos from their Practise runs, until people Were performing Tricks solely for the Purpose of Recording and Posting them.
Then, on a Whim, Cajun posted a Video he had recorded on the Street, of an Unknown Punk performing a Triple flip off a building and Into a Dumpster, all while being On Fire.

The video was a Sensation, at least within the then tiny Spicer community. Sure, it wasn't the most Extreme or Dangerous stunt they'd ever seen, but the fact that some Unknown Kid, that Cajun had just happened to spot on his way home from work, Made this seem Insignificant. Almost instantly, the entire Gang started devoting their Attention to hunting the Mystery Punk down and Recruiting him.
Encouraged, other Spicers began posting similar videos, of Tricks performed by Random Punks. Not all of them evoked the same response From the Board as the First, but Enough did that the Spicers went into a frenzy of Recruitment.
However, it soon turned out that Many of the Prospective members were already In Gangs. Some even lived outside of Velo itself, Or In areas of the City where the Spicers were...unwelcome. Undeterred, the Admins proposed a Change to the Way Spice would be Run. From then on, Spice would not Meet up on the Streets, but only Online. Spicer's, abandoning their Traditional Green and Red, would No longer Declare their Allegiance to the Gang so openly, and Could even Join other Gangs if they wanted. Likewise, Spice would ignore a Prospective members Current Alliegences, even Recruiting from their worst enemys as long as they had the Skills to impress the Boards.
Over the Course of a Few days, Spice disappeared from the Streets of Velo, Tags painted over, groups Disbanded, members going their separate ways. Nothing, not their Pride in the Gang, Territory, or even Street Cred, mattered any more. From then on, It was all about the Tricks.

In the Current Incarnation of Spice, little remains of the Original Gang save its tradition of Naming members after Food Flavourings (specifically the Spicy ones) and, of course, the core belife of the Gang:
That nothing, not even your Life, is as important as the Trick.

Unfortunately, this lack of concern for personal well-being Has Led to certain Views about the Group among Outsiders. The most common Misconception is that Spice is, in some way, a Gigantic and rather Extravagant Suicide Cult. Of course, there have been a Few Spicers who were a little too...obsessed with making their Tricks overly Dangerous, but Spice on the Whole does not promote Suicide. Or, Rather, Suicide as an end in itself. Rather, Spice holds dear the belief that Ones life, while Valuable, is none the less a valid price to pay if it will make a Trick Truly Legendary. Spice is all about leaving your mark on History in the Flashiest way you can, and that's often Not something you can Achieve without Dying first.

Another incorrect Assumption about Spice is that they are elitists who only Recruit the Best....
Actually, that's pretty much on the money, but the Negative connotations behind it are Unfounded. Spice does Only Recruit the Best, but only because the Rest can't meet their criteria. Anyone can be Invited to Join Spice, regardless of background, Gang, age, Sex, Race, etc etc. Its just that, because Better Boarders tend to perform Better board Tricks, Spice Members tend to be Above Average in terms of skills.

The best way to imagine the mindset of a Devoted Spicer is to think of it like this:
When you were little, did you and a group of friends ever jump off walls into bushes, Climb Trees and jump out, Throw rocks at Bee Hives? Well, a Spicer is someone who did all that and Found it Boring. Worse, unlike you (Who no doubt Grew up and switched to more Worthwhile pursuits, Like Posting on Internet Forums), They didn't Grow out of it. They just found Bigger Walls to jump off, and Aimed at Rose bushes.

Despite this, Spicers do have a few rules. First and Foremost, you don't Fake a Trick. If a Spicer is caught Faking, they're Ice Cold, and are kicked out of the Gang. Generally, it ends there, but some Spicers tend to take these things A little Too Seriously.
Lets just say, Spicers who Fake Tricks rarely remain Punks. Its hard to Skate with both your Legs broken.

Secondly, If you have an Ego, Spice doesn't want to know about it. Spicers who go around loading Declaring themselves "Teh Leet Spicemaster" are mocked and Derided on the Board. Spice is not a popular Gang in much of the city, since Many of their More famous tricks were accompanied by Significant Property Damage (among other things), and those who Openly Declare themselves Spicers are often Targets for Revenge. Likewise, drawing Attention to the Gang is not good for the Group as a whole.
As the Lone surviving Admin Dr Tobasco once put it: "Spice does not exist to Advertise your Ego, because that Shit gets the site DOSed"
That said, there were a few Punks Famous for being Spicers, such as Johnny Masala, Saffron and, of course, Jolokia.

(that's all from me, Its' sleepy times)

I have a question or three for you and everyone else:

What do you want out of the 200 tier of the game?

What do you want out of the 300 tier?

Should an entire campaign be able to stretch one tier of content?

What does the endgame look like?

I think these are some of the questions that need to be asked mainly so that the fluff scales with expectations and design. I know next to nothing of what being a punk is or how to properly write a tribe of anarchists, this will help direct creative flow.

man, i loved those adventure hooks. the first one though - wouldnt trashing sets, nicking cameras and generally interrupting shooting just work towards the goal of the people shooting? especially if they get some footage of the "brutal hooligans" ripping around the set "lighting fires and crushing expensive equipment in a riotous display of senseless violence and destruction." i suggest combining it with the second idea - something happens to the ceo of the company making/funding the film and punks save him, figuring that he will realise they arent monsters and stop the filming in gratitude. of course, when he still releases the movie it will really highlight how grey the greys really are to the players.

You could be more subtle about the shoot. Wreck power lines, trash the generators, generally fuck with stuff, off camera. You could also manipulate the crowds and traffic of the streets, or even just jack all the handheld camera's and record a film of your own, showing punk life as it Really is, and release it online before the propaganda piece is finished, so both perspectives are apparent.

>what being a punk is or how to properly write a tribe of anarchists

I've been thinking about this and it seems a bit backwards to me to start out by describing the gangs first and then expect all players to choose one of the existing gangs. I think a PC party (a Crew or whatever it's called) would be a gang of its own. Just starting out, trying to make a name for itself, or doing a few missions. A crew that comes together because they're old friends, because they share common interests or just because they've got a job to do.

I mean, imagine you're a Punk (not a real one, but a Velo City one). You're in the scene. You've got skills, you want to put them to use, but you also need to make ends meet. What do you do? Enter championships (but that's a lot of competition for not a lot of prize money), maybe run errands, deliver goods (I think we could do the whole Mirror's Edge runner stuff and combine it with corporate espionage: imagine there's surveillance everywhere and all the lines are tapped, if you need to get secrets across town so the competition can't listen in, you hire a Punk to run the message through), and whatever.
>> Anonymous 05/10/10(Mon)08:41 No.9728659
>>9728636

Its been a long stated goal that the PC's making their own gangs and crews will be easy, possible, and indeed one of the baseline ways of playing the game.

The "Major" gangs are just examples and interesting setting elements, to give the PC's an idea of how gangs work, and to prompt interesting interactions with the various groups.

Gonna answer my thoughts on these in a new thread later today. Also bump because I highly enjoy VeloCITY

>>9728636

Wait! I can reply!

Most of the gangs we're mentioning won't be directly there. They're closer to the actual fluff then anything. This isn't a system about places really. There's a few, sure, but there are not as important as the people. The people re in gangs, and that lets us give antagonists and NPCs to the setting. Allies and enemies who have the same core beliefs, but go about them in completely different ways.

PCs won't need or be pressured into join them I expect, but it is nice to know who if you tick them off. then. You could try and rise through the ranks of the Black Roses, or you could just go around establishing your own empire. You could tag or just try to get the most air. You could mess with the fuzz and splash some color on the grays. You could hideout and perform crazy spy tricks and learn secrets you shouldn't. The setting will be up to you and your group.

Nothing Man is just giving a setting with rules, and we're fleshing out bits and pieces. After the gift is given, you decide what to do with it, not us.

But I do think the gangs are pretty sweet though, and getting into the political scandals between the gangs will be very fun.

Money is something I won't comment on though. Need a little more info from Nothing Man, whose already mentioned it'll be forthcoming. I already had a pizza delivery service, and I know there are others to come.
>> Anonymous 05/10/10(Mon)08:56 No.9728821
as i understand it, gangs wont be set. there are 7 main gangs - but there are plenty of other unnamed gangs that players can claim, name and flesh out. think of the main gangs as suggestions, launching points, examples of theme and tone, and an easy way for the mc to make npcs from other gangs without needing to actually invent and describe new gangs before players can interact with them properly.

think of them like the different chapters of space marines - ultramarines, blood angels and iron hands are just a few main chapters, but players are encouraged to make their own colour schemes and backgrounds and play as the steel scorpions or the dragons of piety or the furies of fluffmodeus.

and of course if you really like the story of one of the main groups, or are feeling lazy, or just dont have the imagination to think up an entire new group of your own feel free to play as a firecracker or a black rose or a boddhi.

I imagine that not everyone can be a full-time Punk as well, some people have day-jobs that then run into questions of priorities.

I -also- think I and a lot of the rest of us thinking of the game are stuck on 100 level content, there are supposed to be reality-bending moves of flow so hot the ground will Actually Catch On Fire and the lack of grasp on that part of the game is limiting the fluff, which it shouldn't.

It makes for more plot hooks, more esoteric and wuxia elements can be introduced in the old master without an heir to pass on the secrets of the board and the young upstart with promise proving his worth to be the next holder of the power of the Hokuto-No-Shin-Grind, or in Air-Gear's Race to the Trophareum, etc. Its taking me a while to reconcile the over-the top parts to what we have now but I think I'll be able to write it.

I think the main reason we've stayed away from 20* and 30* level fluff, for now, is that the Alpha is strictly only 10* level stuff, so we've been making fluff that will be useful in terms of the Alpha. When we expand to the higher levels of mechanical capability, that'll be the time we need to start working on that higher level fluff.

I would agree with this except the interaction of 20* and 30* level with the 10* level could be -very- useful even if it's just Narrative.

The main thought I had was how the "major" gangs exist or interact on at least two levels, to a 10* level group of PCs a 30* character should be something akin to a force of nature or an act of god and can, if done right, provide story fodder in the quest to understand or gain such power.

"I know how birds can fly, fishes swim, and animals run. But the runner may be snared, the swimmer hooked, and the flyer shot by the arrow. But there is the dragon: I cannot tell how he mounts on the wind through the clouds, and rises to heaven. Today I have seen Lao Tzu, and can only compare him to the dragon."

ive tried doing some fluff for higher skill levels but im having a bit of trouble describing some of the epic maneuvers im imagining in a way that is descripitive enough that people who dont know what im talking about can imagine it without going into so much detail that it clogs up the flow of the story. when im happy with it ill post.

I think we need a solid definition of 20* and 30* level abilities. We have 20* is Jet Set Radio, and 30* is Air Gear... But what does that actually mean?

Can anyone give us some good examples, as well as a strong definition, of what fits 20*, and what fits 30*?
>> Anonymous 05/10/10(Mon)10:24 No.9729754
100 you can do some impressive trickery. 200 your pro-level plus. 300 and the laws of physics humbly beg your permission before they consider applying to you.

At 20* Level trickery I can see things like wall riding up and down the inside of a lighthouse, climbing the statue of liberty with your bare hands and feet, and generally displaying superlative feats of skill that may or may not take you beyond the realm of the human norm, but it's in that grey area. Training with one fingered push-ups in a handstand position.

at the 30* Level you can set things on fire with your speed, commit feats of aerobatic prowess that tells gravity where it can shove it, deliver electrified punches from the static you develop from grinding, or otherwise cause parts of your body or gear to break the sound barrier.

At least that's my interpretation.

This works very well, so until we're told different, lets take this as our base definition and work from there.

I've only read a few threads of this, so forgive me if anyone's already suggested a similar idea.

my idea is that their are some people, or a group of people, throughout the city, who are extremely skilled as runners, riders, etc. their exploits are well known, and their have been sightings of them making almost impossible jumps, landing perfect tricks and generally getting away with some of the most outrageous shit anyone's ever seen.

Theirs one catch though. whoever these people are, they seemingly have a deep hatred for punks. any punks. they target any and all gangs, seemingly popping out of nowhere to wreck havoc. their attacks range from near harmless to outright assault. you might have just finished a tag, only to turn as you leave to see one of them paint over it. you might be making the longest jump you've ever attempted, and on the cusp of successfully landing it be suddenly blindsided in mid air, the last thing you see before your knocked out on the pavement being one of them hanging from near-by roof with a shit eating grin on their face.

they would be like the boggie man. an urban legend. your not sure if they truly exist. some don't believe in them at all, but their are enough stories going round that their has to be some kind of merit to them.

Perhaps the Punksquads Spec Ops group? Their elite assholes, the rumoured subset of anti punk operatives who can beat Most punks at their own game. They'd need their own cool name though...

for a name, you could go generic, like "shadows" or "phantoms" or "black ghosts" or something like that. or have them known by a whole bunch of street names, like "those bastards who put me in traction for 6 weeks"

yeah. punksquad might have a special name for their best and brightest, but on the street theyd just be called 'those filthy fuckers.' not while they were in earshot, of course.

Damnit, too late to describe this. I do think we should stay away from it for now. Though for a general rule I think that higher ecelons of the gangs tend to be 200s, while the Gang leaders and certain other groups, possibly Deadmen or the Boogiemen, are 300s.

The average small, low key gang will be a lot of 10*'s, possibly with one 20*, who is often the leader, but usually not.

Slightly larger gangs usually have an upper echelon of experienced 20* types. Rarely, they'll have a single 30* in their ranks.

Only very large gangs have more than a small number of 30*'s, and even the largest will have less than ten. They will, however, have quite a lot of 20* members, and the capability to train up most of their less skilled members over time.

Spice consists, almost entirely, of 20*'s and 30*'s, due to their elitist policies.

An example gang, lets say the Skyhighs, would have quite a few 10*'s- The kids from the apartments, the younger members of the gang still learning from their elder brethren. The 20*'s would be the older, more experienced members, plus the occasional talented prodigy, who train the lesser members. Then, there's the Ascended, the small number of 30* grade Punks, including the gang leader and several Punks descended from Lucy, the gangs founder.

In the Tripartite, most of the Gang Leaders are 30* level. Of the champions, they're mostly 30*, with a few 20* level people who won the lesser, but still prestigious, competitions. Of the Aesir, they're all usually 30* level Punks, although sometimes, no 30* will desire the position, so a 20* will take it.

This except even smaller numbers of 30*s, most major gangs only having maybe enough to fill a crew of 5-6, some major gangs not even being able to field that large of a force.
