    That said...

/thinks, double-checks to make sure it's not posted on /tg/ yet, sees it nowhere but realizes that he's probably overlooking it, but... oh well.

They're part of a war taking place across a good deal more planets than just Earth, and all things considered this world is actually a pretty unimportant one. It's been given a fighting chance just on the general principle that no place should be given up to the Enemy without a fight, but the magical girls here are still at the very bottom of their superiors' priority list.

As a variant of the similar, this world is already lost to the Enemy, although the Enemy either hasn't yet gotten to the stage of revealing its presence to the world at large, or it never reveals itself to subject worlds, as a rule. The magical girls are empowered in order to fight a guerrilla war, more because it'll distract the Enemy and force them to divert resources than because of any particular desire to see Earth liberated (again, this is a rather unimportant world)

    Both are excellent.

Even if it's just a single grain of sand, there's some grit there, and it doesn't necessarily need to be Warhammer 40k to be good in this respect. Sometimes, less is more.

On the other hand, Warhammer 40k is awesome.

So any degree of grittiness is acceptable.

The law of unintended consequences, basically. Read any good literature about people given great power and you'll see it (ever read Terry Pratchett? Particularly the books with witches or wizards?). Every action has a consequence, usually a bad one, especially if a child tries to make them because they just don't understand.

For example, they are told that there are starving people in the world. So she uses her powers to ensure that everyone can have food whenever they want. Congratulations, you've unemployed every single person in the food service and agriculture industry. She is told that people sometimes fight each other and this is very bad. She wishes that no one ever fights anymore. Congratulations, the majority of free will is lost. Overpopulation destroys the planet, or people have no real way to solve disagreements (depending on interpretation of the wish) and the cause of most major political, religious, scientific and cultural change (conflict) is gone.

    >> Anonymous 05/14/10(Fri)16:13 No.9817049
Evil aliens or something are invading. Maybe extra dimensional horrors. Just pick something trendy from the usual grab-bag. Magical girls are empowered by god or goddess or nature or something to fight off these evil nightmarish things. That's the usual set up anyway.

But, as it turns out, magical girls are the ultimate energy source due to their vast amounts of psychokinetic powers they are carrying around in their heads. This makes them very popular with the mad scientist types the government keeps on its payroll to fight evil invading alien monsters, among other things.

This would be a good match, as the two sides could work together against their common enemy, except the scientist have the bad habit of going full Elfen Lied on them, and lobotomizing them so they can be used a batteries to power massive battle robots and telekinesis cannons and such.

So, are you a bad enough magical girl to save the world from an invasion of soul-slurping shoggoths while being hunted by X-Com who's looking to make you the disembodied soul in their evangelion sandwich?

Go read "Sailor Nothing" by Stephen Gagne for inspiration.

Magical Girl with social problems due to no sleep (Damn demon attacks are every night) bad grades due to falling asleep in class, as well as having to run out of class and/or skip class all the time to deal with demon attacks. She snaps, goes postal, and gets her "official" powers and magical identity taken away, only to find out that she's still stuck fighting the monsters...
    >> Anonymous 05/14/10(Fri)16:17 No.9817102
Magical Girls in the Real World: You've got these cool powers and monsters come after you but against your powers they don't have a chance, sure there might be some scary bits or sometimes when you think you won't win but you save the day, and that evil queen "it would be better if I was in charge" - who is she trying to fool, life isn't like that.

But your friends don't understand, you saw what happens first hand when you tell people what you are - they run screaming or they try and help, and die fighting monsters. So you keep it to yourself and slowly drift away from your friends, you can't confide in them so they'll never understand you, and you can't get excited about their new boyfriend, or new outfit, it just seems so trivial when you are saving the world regularly.

Year by year your friends drift away, they don't mean to, but you barely notice they are gone. You have no interest in your job and are just going through the motions, waiting for the next monster attack. You lose your job but don't care, your landlord kicks you out but the mission comes first. You can live on the street if you have to, no one can hurt you after all.

And then one day you see another person being beaten up by a human, not a monster, a human, and you remember the words of the evil queen "it would be better if I was in charge" and you set out to make the world a better place.

The world will be better, you'll make it a better place, you have to.

The lucky magical girls eventually get killed. The unlucky ones get captured after getting careless. If that happens, the best thing that can happen to you is death after hideous torture.
Forget about saving people. If you make a habit of it, you'll eventually wind up captured in a trap.
The enemy can't see through your magical disguise, but that doesn't mean you are safe. They can and will figure out who you are if you let them have enough clues.
Forget about having normal friends. As a rule, if the enemy ever sees you in action around someone more than once, they will get replaced by a manchurian agent.

    etc. . .

Their powers are fueled on emotions-- their own, someone else's, it doesn't matter. Positive emotions are weakened, and negative emotions are strengthened. Tapping an emotion too strongly or too often in a person will cause permanent damage, with the damage increasing with each successive drain.

Even though the girls can store emotional energy for a time, inevitably they will still fight a battle where they run out of everything, and then have to -push- just a little bit further. And if they survive it, this will eventually happen again.

In the end, they'll have caused permanent and severe damage to so many of their emotions that they can barely function as normal human beings.

Except they too can have any food they want anytime, so they'll live in relative luxury even if they're forced to change professions or work a shitty job to maintain their dwelling, etc.
Better yet - why should they lose their jobs? It goes without saying that a person experienced at making food will get better results when "wishing up" food. I roll over in bed and check the box, for the third time tonight. Two. We're down to two cartridges.

The house has been...silent, empty, ever since the funeral. We never really did talk much anyway, but Hayate's chatter and smiles filled our lives with colour. Now that she's gone, nothing seems to hold much meaning to us any more.

I miss Hayate. I miss her - our friends, too. Nanyoha... seems like that battle happened just yesterday. With our forces pinned down from all directions, we would never even have a chance to retreat if not for her.

And Fate, too. Left on a routine investigation, and vanished without a trace. Her file still reads missing, but when Bardiche shut himself down, we knew for sure. Admiral Chrono - the youngest ever at 25, never leaves his quarters. And we were never too close to Yuuno, I guess he still works in that library of his.

Hayate knew. If Signum knew, she never said a word. The painful truth was that with the Book gone, Hayate was the only thing keeping us alive, allowing us to manifest, sustaining us with her life force. I still wonder why she did it. Perhaps I'll never understand her.

Two cartridges. We've each only got a few days more, and only two of us will have a few more, after that. I wonder if I'll wake up tomorrow. I wonder if I want to wake up...

    Good night, Graf Eisen...

First: the thing about giving naive children the power to enforce their beliefs is there will be other kids like it. Who will disagree. And have childish slapfights over it. Incredibly destructive slapfights.

Second: Look at Hideo Kojima! Imagine magical girls as fucked up as Dead Cell.

Third: I actually had an idea like this! I tried to flesh it out and post on 4chan for some ideas, and looking for a good system to emulate it (I was thinking modified Exalted) ... it did not go well. But it's like they said, "a bit of deconstructiveness or realism makes magical girls grimdark on contact" (Sailor Nothing).

So: imagine this. You turn 13. You find out you have magical powers. Congratulations! You're suddenly drafted and indoctrinated by a paramilitary organization that the governments support, backed up by more magical girls - with discipline, training, backing, intelligence resources, and trained in small-group tactics. If you are willing to fight, they adopt you. Else you face prison. Or death. Or lobotomization. Or a drugged coma. They won't let you run free.

Why do they do this? Because no one has a choice. There are dark forces that plague the world and would kill everyone. They would end life. Conventional weapons are all but useless. You could nuke them, but that is overkill and too much collateral damage and will eventually kill the world.

You're thirteen. You're drafted. You are going to live a life of war and struggle because you're the only ones who can actually save everyone's lives and stop everyone you know and love from dying. If you refuse the call, people will die. Your Sisters will not stand for this, and probably kill you when you refuse.

This is now your life, and you have no choice in it.

How fucked up will you end up?
    How's that?

Seriously though, Nanoha oddly has many of the elements for a potentially grim dark setting, the only thing keeping it above it is the cheery nature of the cast and the fact they stay within the bubble of their friends within the organisation.

Within the setting Nanoha As and StrikerS has started to detail, it's already got a lot of the more harsh elements around, the TSAB has proven itself to be corrupt in areas with a few good officers. Practically every member of the cast barring Nanoha herself has a unfair and cruel past they crawled out from, be it Fate and her abusive mother stricken with grief for her REAL child, to the Wolkenriter who were maintained and loyal to a magical book that became broken to the point it always killed it's master after going Berserk.

If it wasn't for the cheery cast doing their best to make the universe a better place, their world would be a pretty bleak place, from corrupt secret military projects, crazed individual mages and lost destructive technology.

Then you have Betrayers, a doujin that came up with a fucking awesome alternative costume set for Hayate's Wolkenriter and Nanoha and tells the story of Hayate supporting a coup to completely change the TSAB which she's only really following to ultimately unite all the factions within their military.

This sounds pretty much exactly what adeptus evangelion is doing. Dysfunctional child PC forced into combat situations.

Sort of the consquences for not becoming a government sanctioned mage, this is practically what Midchildia in Nanoha DOES. It's fucking full of child soldiers and no one seems to have a huge issue with it.

Yeah, I know. But that's the thing: they kinda ignore it. A gritty-y setting would make that a part of it, and would definitely result in fairly traumatized mages, even thoughs who embrace the call.

Of course, there are always settings like Rosen Maiden which again, are actually pretty dark once you get past the cheery slice of life moments. Centuries of feuding all because some douche bag doll maker decided the only way for them to work out which one was best was to solve it Highlander style.

well yeah, that's why I'd say you'd just have to tone it up, but in reality there are a fair number of relatively dark magic girl series that just drown out the harsh nature of their setting by glossing over it with a cheery cast of colourful girls who all want to make friends.

Posting a anime that did it pretty right. You are a magic girl, but your fate is to disappear the moment you confess your love, you were never meant to be a huge part in the story, merely a tragic side note who says her swan song and never returns to her prince.

Starts out all monster of the week, ends up with everyone fighting against the writer of their own tragedy to make the fairy tale into a happy end.

To be fair, they do address some of those issues with characters like Fate who is basically damaged goods, she ended up conquering her feelings for her mother in A's and later turned it into a big focus on her life to save children from the kinds of circumstances she was in, leading her to adopt Caro and Elio. One a summoner considered too powerful by her home village that she would disturb the balance of power with their neighbours so they handed her to the TSAB who treated her as a weapon of mass destruction because whenever she summoned the big dragon it would just kill everything. Still a shit character though.

With a shift in focus from Nanoha making girls cry and deal with their problems by befriending them, most of the characters would have some serious issues.

Hm. So you live believing you live to battle and save people ... but then what happens when you grow up? Are the reserves high enough you can retire? Do you stop being such a hero, because you grow weaker as you age? Or ... what?
And since this is 4chan, too, don't forget there will probably be some kind of breeding program to try and make more magical girls. It might not be voluntary.

Cyberpunk. A group of teenage razorgirls try to make their way in the hood. One's an introverted hacker who struggles with fitting in offline. Another's a hooker who's trying to pay rent for her father who was disabled in a workplace accident that'd have been prevented if the company cared about its employees. Yet another's got a lover who got tried as an adult, doing 10+ years and she's having a hard time dealing with the loss and the strain. Things like that. It'd be like if William Gibson wrote Pretty Cure fanfiction.

I'm getting thoughts of a more Aztec-inspired thing. Or Mesopotamian. Both pretty grimdark.

Anyone have any thoughts for expanding either of these, or the other guy's Norse thing?

Well, seeing as my suggestion is to take something like Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and tone up the grim dark a ton, we can easily go with most of your ideas and not break the setting too much.

I've always liked the idea why all their older mages are behind desks is because of something like magic girls are at their strongest in their teenage years and once they become adults they slowly deteriorate, they can stave it off with the usual training, but growth is going to get harder and harder, so eventually it'll be training or as the case is with your ideas, perhaps outright breeding/training/nursing mages.

Magic seems fairly common in Midchildia, but on Earth it seems mages are more rare with the few they produce who get involved in TSAB affairs are taken on and eventually become powerful (both Admiral Graham and Nanoha fit that).

So you could easily go for either, Earth becomes aware of magic, makes extreme government agencies that conscript people found to possess the talent for magic, or just make the TSAB that much more vicious and corrupt. Child soldiers, compulsory service for anyone with the latent magic powers beyond the average, unethical testing, the whole lot. They are already half way there.

During A's and even after it before StrikerS, alot of people theorised that Signum was just a alternative time-line Nanoha who basically ended up trying to save everyone but failed and became much like Shirou from Fate Stay Night, eventually signing a pact with a magical artefact to become a servant.

    Cutey Honey Manga.

Or Princess Tutu. You will never know true love because you're a Sidecharacter. Now dance like a bitch to speed up your demise.

...And now I'm imagining iron man pretty much as is, but with pretty pretty princes ballerina costumes replacing the iron man suits. And Robert Downey Jr. playing a totally unrepentant alcoholic cross-dresser called before congress to testify about his feelings and world saving dance moves.

Aztec Princess Tutu would go something like this:

"I need to chop you appart in my magical tree in order to find the part of my prince's heart logged in your body. Don't be afaid though, I'll stitch you up afterwards, minus the parts I can't find of course."

Series would be about mindgames and chopping up people.

You know, it might be easier to combine these. Katawa Shoujo: Cyberpunk Edition. Emi is a Mirror's Edge type courier with cyberlegs, Hanako's a canny survivor of the streets who survived her house being firebombed by a rival gang, Shizune's a hacker whose brain got fried and hearing got lost in a hack gone awry, Rin squats in a flat with a bunch of other drug-using neo-anarchists, and Misha...well, she's already got fucking pink hair and is loud as hell. How much more punk can she get, anyways?
