    The Emperor's Nightmare

    >Founded in the 39th Millennium, on the Hive World of <REDACTED> as a successor Chapter to the vaunted Raven Guard. They have taken to parent chapter's talent for stealth in the duty to the Emperor. Oddly enough, their gene seed bears a strange Catapesean Node mutation that causes long bouts of sleeplessness alternating with long coma-like rests. This mutation would almost be unremarkable except for the chapter's close connection to the Scholastica Psykana. It is said that the Marines continue to fight on even in their long rests battling the machinations of the Warp alongside the Psykana. Some Marines even awaken to claim to have fought side by side with the Emperor himself. These claims have attracted the attention of certain members of the Inquisition, and not always for the better...

Trying to work out the story of the badass Chapter Master. Figure he can be the chapter's first.

How about this instead? All the Chapter Masters (or other great heroes) who are mortally wounded in Battle are placed in Stasis, the forever Sleep, that they may join the Emperor's battle beyond the veil of waking.

    The Acolyte of His Slumber
    (shortened to the Acolyte)

It's left ambiguous to whom the "His" refers to, The Emperor...or the Chapter Master...

Over the Millenia his office has become more closely intertwined with that of the Chaplains. Thus most of his retinue is that of the ecclesiastical members of the chapter.

The Chaplains themselves find their duty also shifted to taking care of those taken by The Sleep. They maintain those slumbering and are their to administer the proper Rites upon their waking.

That is until they are discovered as Dreamers. Then they are taken in by the Librarium, even if they are not Psykers themselves. It is with the Librarium that those that truly fight on in their sleep can reach their full potential. (With the help of the Scholastica Psykana of course.)

Warring at the Emperors side during sleep would possibly result in a higher number of Battle Brothers awakening latent psychic powers.
That would also explain the close relationship with the Scholstica Psykana. They'd no doubt find it very interesting and possibly aid in the training/counceling needed with psychic powers coming to the fore later in life.

I was thinking about a massive agri-world that has begun to plant its crops in subtle patterns of nurgle. These patterns go unnoticed because of the amount of cloud cover and shear size of the patterns. One of the Emperor's Nightmares dreams of the planet with out cloud cover and can see the signs. Maybe the dreams aren't just places to fight in but they also lead them to places of battle when they wake as well. Is this going to much in the wrong direction? Should they consider non-dreams secondary?

The initiation ritual for a Librarian, is to drink hot milk with hallucinogenic mushrooms native to their homeworld.

The hallucinations during sleep will allow the Librarian to attain a spiritual foothold within the Warp, using his state of sleep as a defensive tool within the Warp. After all, a sleeping mind is so harder to see within the Warp than an awake mind.

They're dudes that sleep without dreaming before battle, and stay awake until the mission is either over, or they're dead.

Fuck. Yes. Marines who haven't slept since the campaign began two months earlier swerving, drifting and doughnuting around obstacles in an overcharged rhino.

Blood Angels rules are probably best for them on the TT. Both for the overcharged engines lending to the haste and reflexes theme, and for the librarians. AND for the dreadnought focus for that matter.

You could even refluff the death company as those who have become completely unable to sleep and after a year or two of going insane wish only to die in battle and be granted the Emperor's sleep of the just.

We need to focus more on the juxtaposition of the Night Owl veterans, the slumbering dreadnoughts and other dreamers and the practically-on-meth hyperalertness of those who are forced to stay awake for weeks at a time.

For those who are psychically dreaming, and thus stuck in the warp, should they have prophetic dreams frequently, occasionally or not at all? I really like the idea of trying to slay a daemon's after-image in the warp while it's busy and distracted manifested in the real world, thus slaying the daemon perminantly rather than merely banishing it. This would probably be exceedingly difficult though as even the lowliest bloodletter was created from powerful emotions of rage and violent urges. In tabletop stat terms each bloodletter is more like a bloodthirster on its home turf. The Warp isn't exactly the space marines' chapter keep. They would be in constant danger there.

I really like the idea of insomniac marines being very stealthy- after all, they can wait and wait and wait and stalk whoever they're tracking. Eventually, you are going to fall asleep. As you desperately look around and try to spot what's following you, you get sleepier, so you start jumping at shadows. Pretty soon, you're not sure whether or not that dark shadow is a marine or just your imagination.

And once you fall asleep, it will be too late for you to escape, in the living world or in dreams.

With them being insomniacs, I imagine their stealth to be less "ninja-like" stealth and more "commandos" and "mission impossible" style stealth, with them breaking in through the ventilation and roof, doing the hit/retrieving the object, and getting out. They have a plan, they have a time limit, and they keep an escape route open.

    So to recap:

Founded in M39. Young but not that young.

    Raven Guard gene seed

    No devastators.

Take pride in their colours but still favour stealth tactics.

Catalpsean node mutation causes extremes of sleep. Either slipping into near comas for a month or staying awake for the same. With every passing day awake they become more alert and aware, the overstimulation making them jittery and twitchy.

Connections to Scholasta Psykana. Together with the librarians they seek to coach those who enter the fugue into fighting in the warp. Though most within the chapter never reach this level (usually it's only those with actual psychic potential who can do this) many recieve prophetic dreams and some even claim upon waking that they were visited by the Emperor or even fought alongside him.

For this reason both the Echlesiarchy and the Inquisition are watching them carefully.

Dreadnoughts are the chapter's ultimate badasses. Spending most of their time slumbering and travelling the warp with the librarian choirs they are woken to do battle in the real world rarely. Luckily the chapter has many dreadnoughts.

First Chapter Master was originally a company captain of the Raptors, seconded over to lead the chapter upon its creation following his defeat of a mighty daemon prince. The chapter master is now the chapter's eldest dreadnought and has not woken in over 1,000 years. He is still technically the leader of the chapter but an adjutant commands in his place.

    What have I forgotten?

They keep a council which passes the leadership role between them when the leader falls asleep (and I still like the vizier title more). They record their chapter history in a multitude of illustrated storybooks, recording the chapter's battles both in waking and in dream, which are selected as cautionary tales to be read before battle. Occasionally they carry their sleeping chapter master into battle due to the fear-inducing effect of his psychic dreams.

A blindfold made from the skin of a special cavedwelling creature native to their homeworld.

It's a dangerous creature, but the main problem is, it lives in perfect darkness down in the bowers of the Earth.

That's the test for becoming a Space Marine, a horde of kids descending down from the Upper Spire to the lower Hive, until they enter the caves underneath the Hive. At the Upper Spire, they had a meal of kings in the presence of the local nobility and the high-ranking officers of the Chapter, as well as occasionally a travelling Imperial agent.

Everyone in the Middle Hive cheers for them in decorated streets, and even in the Underhive, gangwars are stopped to let the children pass, in fact, many gangers will fire salutes into the air, often causing problems with boiling gas vents.

Perhaps the "serious" totem is a blank book, in which they record their lessons and their adventures for the librarians to keep. Because they never know when sleep will take them they always keep one at hand, writing in it as soon as they have time to do so. When they wake from their sleep, the first thing they do is record their dream before it fades from their memory.

But I have a solution that makes sense:

They would probably carry both or all three.

Given the duality of each marine, they would probably all carry a blindfold for when they're forced to stay awake, a dreamcatcher to guard them with the Emperor's blessing while they sleep and a journal to write their dreams in for the chapter library when they're away on assignment.

Having just one of these but not the others just makes less and less sense to me when I think about them all together. I'd say combined they are the chapter trapping. Book, catcher, blindfold, bolter. These are the holy tools of the chapter.

Only ideas I had for them were one that puts enemies to sleep (either subtlety or forcibly), and the "big power" which part of the cost is putting the Nightmares Dreamer/Psyker into the Deep Coma-Sleep so that he may attack the enemy "Beyond the Veil of Waking".

I think I just like "Beyond the Veil of Waking" as a phrase too much, even though it makes questionable sense.

    WOW!!!

    JUST WOW!!!

    OP OP here.

I'm so happy with this. So very very happy.

The Blindfolds...awesome. Book for remembering dreams...pretty awesome. (Make it some mandatory thing ingrained in them by their Librarians, maybe a way of detecting True Dreamers) Dreamcatcher...fuck all awesome! Screw purity seals!

Sleep for now. But waking up and writefagging!
    >> Anonymous 02/05/11(Sat)04:13 No.13788820
Say, why not give the librarians the ability to forcefully "wake" their brethren up, in the case when some of marines go into sleep without warning in the midst of a firefight. However this ability can only stimulate the cerebellum which controls the motor control.

Gentleman, I present to you, a sleep walking space marine.

Sounds like it'd be more the domain of the Apothecaries, toting about industrial-grade doses of hyperamphetamines.
    >> Anonymous 02/05/11(Sat)04:30 No.13788943
    >>13788871
Huh. If we start interpreting the Chapter's hyperactiveness and sleeplessness as the product of constant amphetamine injections from their power armour, that's...kinda interesting.

The Catalpsean Node mutation actually makes them perpetually prone to death-like sleep, but that's unacceptable considering what the hell they're supposed to be doing...so, instead, they are kept pumped full of powerful amphetamines etc. to force them into wakefulness. Thus their high-strung twitchiness. Their sleep-bouts are when their systems finally crash, whereupon they dream terrible and fantastical dreams (which are then faithfully recorded afterward).
    >> Anonymous 02/05/11(Sat)04:39 No.13789023
    >>13788943
Slight revision to this - fuck the injections from power armour. Instead, they are implanted with chem glands that fulfill the same purpose during the implantation of the Catalpsean Node. The days/weeks-long crashes come from a combination of the glands being strained from overuse and the general bodily health of the Marine in question being unable to take further abuse.

Just speaking out of my ass here, but they sound a bit like a naturally occurring, toned down version of an eversor. Maybe they could keep a token one in one of their battle barges, seeing as they both are either in constant twitchy alertness, or in a coma?

They could use it as a sort of cooperation between them and the Officio Assassinorum, as a sort of last resort weapon when a stealth mission goes pear shaped.

Eh, I like the idea that their wakeful state is just as extreme as their sleeping state and that the longer they stay awake the more twitchy they get. Making it as simple as "lol space meth" kind of detracts from the feel of the chapter IMO

That said, this, like the Night Owls, could certainly be some kind of special unit. I absolutely agree that the apothecaries would be forced, on occasion, to wake up a comatose marine so that he can fight for his life. This totally would happen, I just don't like it being something the entire chapter does let alone something the entire chapter does regularly.

To me though this seems more like a great counts as for Astorath the Grim. If the entire army is all methheads it loses a lot of its originality and becomes just like all the other chapters out there on combat drugs.
    >> Anonymous 02/05/11(Sat)12:34 No.13791477
If they regularly used adrenaline drugs, then it would deny their abillity to fight along the emperor in their sleep anyways. Let us not sacrifice the true battle for it's mere trappings.

Brother Adelphos of the Emperor's Nightmare chapter let out a breath as his hands worked their way with the swiftness that came with decades of experience. Though his sight was filled with only the darkness the blindfold could offer, he was not hampered in anyway.

The Emperor gifts, his augmentations, made him more than a mere man. Even now, his skin felt the slightest of breezes even through the recycled air of the Battle Barge. The papery parchment of his Purity Seal ticked at his cheeks as his movement jostled the blindfold and its attached cargo. The cured leather of his blindfold soothes He could smell the holy oils that the room had been anointed with, and the faint whines of servos told him that his fellow brothers were doing much the same as he was right now. Anyone fool enough to think him vulnerable was too stupid to breathe.

Practiced fingers lifted a hinged lid, and from it, Brother Adelphos gently lifted a small object. Seemingly made from simple twine and feathers, the Dreamcatcher was a marvel of technology. It had been created by the craftsmen of Mars, of the mysterious Machine Cult, and designed with the aid of the Scholasta Psykana to aid his chapter and him alone. The deceptive looking thing was actually made with the intention of harnessing Psychic energy. So very useful for him. The Librarians spoke of how in ancient days, before even the founding of the Imperium, they had been used to protect children, by snaring malevolent daemons of the Warp. Such records were heavily fractured and unreliable of course, but a small part of him reveled in the legend. Of course, this Dreamcather was far different. His thoughts and dreams would fuel the beacon. It was the Chapter's greatest weapon against the horrors of the Warp. And it in turn gave them a mote of protection. It was believed that the Emperor made himself known through it, and as long as the Brother gave it their protection, he too would give the Marines solace.
    >> Anonymous 02/05/11(Sat)15:31 No.13792876
    >>13792869

His idle thoughts, his rage and fury, all of it would be sharpened to a fine point with this focus. This Dreamcatcher had belonged to Sergeant Iskander himself.

He hung it above his head before sitting down, ready to start his rest cycle. The Emperor's Nightmare Chapter had been the butt of more than one joke among other Marines. Some sneered that the Nightmares were of no use considering their mutation. But Adelphos knew his own capabilities, and more than one foe had felt the teeth of his chainsword. It could not be denied however, that his brothers grabbed elusive sleep whenever possible. Any respite, any chance would be taken without a second thought. It was a small joke that for the Nightmares, their free time was rest time. Every few seconds of fervered sleep meant more seconds to fight, and more time to stave off his inevitable collapse.

He breathed in deeply before Adelphos began his prayers.

"My Emperor, I give you now my offerings, let this darkness consume me, for your light will ensure its failure. Let your glory fill my limbs, and may my wrath consume your foes," he murmured.
    >> Anonymous 02/05/11(Sat)15:32 No.13792885
    >>13792876
Other Brothers had already started their prayers, and with effort, Adelphos blocked them out to focus on his own thoughts, though now that the Dreamcatcher had started to whirl as its archaic components activated, made it difficult.

Every bit of emotion he could conjure went into the thing. It was as though the Dreamcather was an empty basin, and his mind a full pitcher. Adelphos' jittery nerves calmed as he poured all his worries and thoughts. Minutes later, Adelphos' mind was as clear as it ever got, and though surrounded by Chapter Serfs and fellow Brothers, he felt alone.

He let out one last breath, and waited for a sleep that would never come.

    ---

Not my best, but I think this is a good interpretation of the Emperor's Nightmare chapter from what I've seen you all made.

As gay as it sounds, it's all about colour science. Blue and purple go together, but don't create a statement. There's no OOMPH. You need a contrasting colour to bring it out. Gold usually works well. (See preheresy Emperor's Children) A blue Aquilla is neat, but it's also slightly heretical to the puritanical. If you made the Aquila gold, would it look any better?

If not, how about some bright blue around the eyes? They're supposed to be all about sleep, so do something neat around the eyes. A white glow or a light blue glow. See below link, for some cool eye effects.

    So about the chapter's dreadnoughts.

There are a lot of them right?

How? Why? Do they make them in-house? Did they find a huge stash of dreadnought armour on a forgotten moonbase somewhere?

Are only the psykers who are really good at doing the sleep-fighting stuff picked to be dreadnoughts? Do you think they only have librarian dreadnoughts or do they have a wide variety?

Since they don't have devastators someone said the dreadnoughts would cover this roll, I think that makes some sense. Riflemen dreads for fire support and all that. That would explain why they USE dreads so often, but we should still flesh out where they get all those machines from.

Nice. I dig the archaic gothic bling and so forth. It visually accentuates the chapter's heavy ties to the psykana and their whole librarian fetish. Plus this chap looks pretty nightmarish himself.

As to the colour scheme, the purple is quintensentially nightmarish while the yellow makes me think of sand. The whole Arabian Nights storytelling thing, not to mention Oneiros putting sand in your eyes while you sleep. I think having visual cues for that can only be a good thing.

I don't think anyone would ever go to a Psyker for Psychiatry (unless you're implying mind-probing, which could only end in tears), and in 40k Techpriests are infinitely more likely to be doctors (as scary as that seems), even if they'd have medieval level ideas concerning psychiatry -- see the most popular solution, "drill a hole in the brain to let the evil spirits out".

Besides, I really wanted to see it done with the "creepy techpriestess", as she was an old request of mine and I did want to see something else with her other than another Advice Dog macro or masturbation pic.

I've been trying to think of a new story I might use, but the relative seriousness of the Chapter makes it difficult. I have no idea how to portray what makes this Chapter unique, the use of Sleep offensively. All my brain is coming up with is a generic scenario where a squad busts through a heretic Imperial Governor's mansion, knifing people and cracking heads before making a daring escape.

Humor? That's fairly simple if you exaggerate character traits, but a serious story...

I once tried to figure out what sort of party setup would work in Inception 40k. I think Arthur would be a Dream Warriors Scout Sgt while Eams would be a Psyker or DW Librarian. Cobb would be a Radical inquisitor reluctantly working for Saito, an Inquisitor Lord.

"We envy not their sleep, the stillness of the body does not convey the battle that rages within the mind." All that while fighting off packs of demons. Doesn't have to be the dream battles themselves just the odd situations the chapter gets into because of them.

All I could come up with is something with alternating POVs, one storyline following a group of Nightmares in their assault on a cultist compound in the middle of summoning a demon, the other from the POV of a dreamer, wading through the mist of dreams, following his instincts and coming upon the warp presence of the summoned daemon just as his brothers in arms begin taking it on back in the real world.

Only a few of them could really be called "inception marines"

Most of the chapter just spends long times going crazy being awake and long times in a coma like sleep. Those who are sleeping often recieve prophetic dreams and of those who are receptive to those dreams some turn out to have latent psychic potential and it is those few who are selected by the librarians to train with them and the scholasta psykana to fight the daemons of the warp while asleep. Their ultimate goal being to slay the "after-image" of a daemon in the warp while it is manifested and distracted in the real world, thus slaying the daemon perminantly they believe, instead of merely banishing it back to the warp.

Inception ain't got shit on that.

Two threads, two needlessly rude people. Still a good average but c'mon man. We were doing so well...

Would you like to try again? What is your point?

We're nearly autosaging. We don't have the time or space for troll posts and condescention. Please contribute if you choose to post.

Since things are still in the air regarding the exact color scheme, might I suggest the following tidbit of fluff?

The council in charge of the chapter while the chapter master sleeps is called "The Wake". It is made up of the most senior marine currently awake at the Fortress-Monastery of Betten-Burgen, and usually includes at least one of the Venerable Dreamwalkers In Armor otherwise known as the chapter's dreadnoughts.

    >>13803284
I like it. Especially since wake has so many conotations. In the "wake" of the chapter master's perminant sleep, those who are "wakeful" form the council etc etc blah blah. It works very well.

Oh one thing guys: why is the chapter master asleep? He's a Raptor originally so he doesn't have the mutated catalpsean node. I submit that it was revenge from the Tzeentchian daemon he banished. One of his minions came back and cursed Randolph to eternal slumber or whatever. Sound good?

We seem to have settled on the quartered purple and yellow scheme since people are already importing it into Dawn of War and since it is sufficiently "fabulous" plus the whole dreams + sand visual motif.

    Oh snap, wait wait wait...

What if it's one of those "I stole your soouuuul" kind of things?

Like in addition to smiting daemons and whatever, part of the reason that the chapter trains dreamwalkers and that their psykers spend so much time in the warp, is that they're searching for the mind of their chapter master that was stolen from them by a daemonic servant of the prince. In over a thousand years of searching they have not managed to locate it but have accomplished many great deeds along the way.

Awesome or clichéd crap? Or both?
    >> Anonymous 02/06/11(Sun)12:28 No.13804094
I thought the reason the chapter master is asleep is because he's a dreadnought now, their whole thing being taking massive naps in between battle or story telling.

The chapter master is a dreadnought, yes. However, he never awakes. He shows vital signs, but all attempts to wake him fail.

yeah, but importantly none know why, everything else is only rumoured but can't be confirmed

Is his trapped by the daemon prince? are they both locked in combat on the astral plane? etc.

Colours can also be interpreted as that of their banners.

Stealth marines that take their banners (squad or otherwise) on whichever mission they go to?

So when its time to burst out, all guns blazing, the enemy will see who exactly it is thats buttfucking them.

Hmm. Personally, in the DoW2 engine, I like Abyss Purple and Abyss Orange colors better for the Nightmares -- simply because they look black as night until the light hits them just right, and then WHOA.

I have to say I do like the look of that, orange (gold) makes me think sun and morning whereas the purple make me think night, so work well.

That does look great. My only vague complaint would be that the chapter doesn't really have anything to do with the sun per se, and that we sorta lose out on the sand motif. But that's nitpicky and the slight tweak to the colour scheme looks great.

I understand what your saying its just that for me the golden look, especially in >>13804564 makes me think of morning sun which symbolise waking for me. Against the purple which is more dream-esque and shadowy.

anyhoo any drawfags willing to giver the chapter symbol ago, the extent of my drawfaggotry ends and mspaint unfortunately

    here, glad you like it!

I took the liberty of setting up a 1d4chan page for us, but it's far from clean and I haven't combed the threads for all the ideas yet. I'd appreciate help.

Bumping with a try to combine the recent
attempts into one. SMP doesn't have metallics, so no shiny shiny, but I think this gets close.

I made your metallic scheme with the new beta painter, so we get to see a tactical marine instead of MISTA HAIRESY. What do you think?
