    16 KB Good Mastermind Anonymous 02/11/11(Fri)20:14 No.13868183
We all know and love the Evil Mastermind. He's a classic figure in his black cape, with his small goatee and large evil laugh. He always explains his plans to the hero first and may occasionally be prone to turning into a giant snake.

It occurs to me, however, that most of this is just window dressing. Although it's all a sign someone is evil, what stops a GOOD guy from having the goatee, wearing the cape, and having an evil laugh?

What if we have a man who displays every single facet of being an evil overlord - except being evil? His schemes are to create charities and help people, or run bake sales. And when someone takes him for a sucker or turns on him, he is just as ruthless as an evil overlord - in a good way. He'll loudly shout, "YOU HAVE FAILED ME FOR THE LAST TIME!" And then fire a crappy henchman. He turns thieves into the police, tax evaders into the FBI, and fights villains one on one in duels to determine the victory of good and evil.

He's unhesitatingly, unrepentantly good, but looks and acts just like an evil overlord.

    What do you think, /tg/?

I don't think the Shadow really counts. He's just a prototypical antihero, really.

The good mastermind would actually be a good guy who looks and acts just like a stereotypical evil mastermind, except that he's always doing good.

    Cool original character, bro.

Would probably work best in an intentionally humorous game, but you could put him in something more serious and pass him off as an eccentric.

I just don't see him that way. He's an armed vigilante with the power to evade mens sight.

He's more a prototype Batman than an inverted Ming the Merciless type. (Yes, I'm aware early Batman was a direct rip off of The Shadow)

No, Ozymandias was clearly a Neutral alignment, although he's coming closer.

I honestly think Vetinari is the closest fictional example that actually exists, although he's not quite so good or quite so stereotypical.

I think that the most important part is that he IS ruthless, but that he uses ethical and legal means to punish people who oppose and/or fail him. Docking pay, firing people, turning them into the police, etc.

As a note, I think he'd also be a great BBEG for an evil campaign.

I remember some story from some fa/tg/uy's game where the party came to a town in the middle of BFE with a large tower outside town. In the town lived a lich who basically made the town awesome. Education for all the residents, free health care, better economy, basically using all his powers for good, yet every time they cast Detect Evil, the lich lights up like a lightbulb. Eventually the party storms the tower and kills the lich, cause he is in fact evil; just because they can't figure out how doesn't mean he isn't evil. After the deed is done the townspeople kick them out angry-mob style for killing their protector. Turns out he was just a kindly old wizard who wanted to protect the village for eternity, but the lich ritual is so unholy it makes the user evil regardless of their intentions.

    Shit sucks.

So let me think. We shouldn't stop here. An Evil Mastermind has an entire evil organization.

A Good Mastermind would too. It would be extra hilarious if they looked just like their evil counterparts too.

For instance, a "good" lieutenant who is always trying to force his boss to retire and become the new Good mastermind so he can support the charities HE likes and run the bake sales with HIS favorite cookies.

The hulking big brute who loves fighting and is an MMA champion, wears spikes and leather and looks like something out of Mad Max, but who gives violent beatdown on criminals and impolite people, and always tips 20%.

The sexy femme fatale who wears black leather and tries to seduce the evil into joining team good, who also pays for women's shelters and occasionally works at a rape crisis center.

    Who am I forgetting here?

Lord Blackforest looked through his window briefly, enjoying the sight of his dark fortress of doom. The sharp angles and bladelike insignia on every corner reminded him of his unchallenged dominion over his privately owned property, respected by the government for his charitable works.

He stroked his goatee, small and neat, lightly as he thought. After a few moments, he turned to face his Henchmen.

“So now we will find if our plans are coming to fruition. Baroness Von Wolf, how is your portion of the plan proceeding?”

His eyes never strayed from hers, although many a lesser man could not have kept themselves from running their eyes over her incredible and voluptuous figure, clad in dark leather and sleek as water over velvet. She responded with a sultry smile. “Just as planned, my lord. I have seduced the Mafia's head accountant as ordered, and he is willing to testify in court against them. The mob will not stand to impede your plans.”

“Very good.” He said, simply, “And the photoshoot? That is raising sufficient money?”

    “Yes, my lord.”

He turned suddenly, bladelike, to face the large leather clad man in rough attire. “And how about your work, Thresher? How are things proceeding with the Biker gangs in the area?”

“Already under our control, Lord.” Responded the man with a rough voice. “They were being unkind to an old lady, so I beat up their leader and now they follow me. They're ready to aid in the construction.”

A thin ghost of a smile appeared momentarily on Lord Blackforest's face.

Finally, he turned to the tall, thin, spindly man with a wild head of white hair and an air of permanent distraction.

“My Lord,” He said, not waiting to be addressed, “I have already begun the construction of the giant scorpionbots. They are uniquely suited to the task. They can haul vast loads and fight off any who oppose us. They will also be perfectly adapted to tear down the orphanage.”

“Excellent!” Shouted Lord Blackforest. “No no one can oppose my good scheme to tear down the orphanage – and build a BIGGER, BETTER ORPHANAGE! There will be teddy bears on every shelf, and everything will be up to code! NOW NO ONE CAN STOP US! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

“No one can oppose our plan to destroy the Earth, Pitiful human.” The unfeeling vision of the dark insectoid leader of the Teeknak looked down on Lord Blackforest, truly unrepentant. “We have already sent the astroid on its course to destroy your pitiful planet. There is no escaping your inevitable doom.”

A thin smile appeared on Blackforests face. “Is that truly what you believe? That we are so primitive that a mere meteor can defeat us? You knew nothing of my scheme to oppose you.”

“A scheme?” The insectoid being stated. “What scheme could your primitive human mind possibly conceive that could oppose our righteous might? We have been traveling the stars since long before you pathetic humans climbed out of the trees.”

“This one, you fool!” He said, turning to the thin figure standing behind him and turning away from the monitor. “DOCTOR SPELZGOOD! ACTIVATE THE GIANT MOON CANNON OF DOOM!”

“Yes, My Lord!” The scientist replied, glee on his face as he pressed the red button.

Suddenly, the normally pristine surface of the moon erupted as ground undisturbed for eons shifted and moved, and a massive construction of pristine metal appeared, a giant parabolic dish with multiple rings.

It moved slowly to face the giant asteroid the invaders had sent toward Earth, and through the walls of his dome on the moon, Lord Blackforest could feel the vibrations in the surface of the moon as the weapon charged. Red light built up in the bottom of it's dish, and the entire moon ached with effort to contain so much energy. “Now!” he yelled, “TASTE TRUE POWER!” The weapon suddenly erupting in a giant beam of brilliant technicolor lightning, blasting from the Moons surface with overwhelming power. The Asteroid sailing on, unaware of its impending doom. Unable to change its direction, the beams raked across its surface. Thousands of small fragments erupted from it, only to be dissolved at the atomic level.

    Cotd.

Dr. Madevilbad sat in the high-backed throne of golden skulls, carefully examining his visitors.
"I trust your stay has been .. comfortable?" he said, a wicked gleam in his eye, the other a patch of bright red leather held in place with silver staples.

"We have enjoyed our stay quite well, Dr. Madevilbad, but we have but one question.." the leader of his opposition, a sneak-thief from the night before, leading his ragtag band of miscreants deep into the heart of the empire they so violently opposed.

"What might that be, Goodman Dogooder?"

"Could we get more of those mints on the pillows? They're addictive. Is there some nefarious plot involved in their creation?"

Dr. Madevilbad gave no sign of acknowledgment, merely stared deep into Goodman's eyes. "Those mints," he explained, one finger tapping on his desk rhythmically. "... were made by my aunt Claire, who puts in a special ingredient into each and every mint she makes."

"And what diabolical ingredient might that be?"

    "Love."

    Later, they had coffee cake.

“That's because,” Doctor Spelzgood yelled loudly, “I AM A GENIUS!”

“Your scheme is foiled, fool!” Lord Blackforest snapped. “None will oppose the forces of Lord Blackforest!”

“It is irrelevant.” The Alien replied, the dispassionate calm returned to its voice. “Your weapon does not have the range to engage us while we are in orbit of Pluto! We will simply return with greater forces, and destroy you!”

“I'm afraid not.” The Good Lord replied. “I believe you will find that your ship is not where you believe it to be.”

“What sort of nonsens- WHAT!?!” The alien shouted. “How can this be? We are nearly in orbit of the Moon!”

“While you were blustering your threats,” Blackforest stated, “The baroness infiltrated your ship and reprogrammed your navigation controls. This fight was over before it ever began. By the way, Baroness, you deserve an extra large Christmas bonus this year.”

“Thank you, my lord.” The alien turned, startled, to find the lithe woman already behind him.

“Thresher, bring the Earth fleet next to the Teeknak ship.”

From his high tower overlooking the poorest portion of the city, He pressed the button on the microphone mounted on his desk.
    "Bring me Chubs."
Heavy footsteps echoed through the halls growing ever closer until a heavy knock was heard at the iron double doors.
    "Bring him in!"
The doors swung open and two men drug a sniveling fat faced man in by his arms. He was bound and writing against the gargantuan guards. Now, under the unflinching stare of the Baron of Blades a terrified shriek was torn from Chub's mouth and he broke down in an uncontrollable sobbing fit. The Baron smiled grimly, and stood behind his desk.
"Do you know why you're here, Chubs? Do you know?"
Chubs made animal sounds of fear and struggled against his captors to no avail. The Baron motioned for the guards to bring him to the wide windows behind the desk. They forced the frenzied chubs to stare out as the city was swarmed with henchmen in dark clothes bursting in to home after home after home The city was awash with black ants.
"This is what happens when you deny ~"

“I see.” Stated Lord Blackforest. “And there are no issues?”

    “No, my lord.”

The Dark Lord of good stepped quickly over to the table of finger foods, picking up one of the ham-rollups.

    “Lieutenant...”

    “Yes, My Lord?”

“This was supposed to be Dr. Spelzgood's ethical vat-grown ham. I am aware you went out and purchased regular ham for the chef, and sold the vat grown ham to a few excessively rich individuals.”

The tall, gray haired Lieutenant looked momentarily stunned. “I... I was just thinking of the finances for the organization!” He cried. “The excess would go to the charity to provide shelters for the homeless! Truly!”

“And how are we supposed to promote tastier, ethically created ham if it is sold to the rich, Lieutenant? No, I am not displeased you thought of the charity, but only that you lied to me. Moreover, you have undermined my plans with inferior ham.

'YOU HAVE FAILED ME FOR THE LAST TIME, LIEUTENANT!”

"This is what you get when you deny a boy like Tim a heart transplant because of a pre-existing condition. Take him to the free clinic, those med students will find a use for him I'm sure."
Chubs gave one last wail and was escorted out of the room.

Grand Vizier Al-Ahmed gasped for breath as blood bubbled out of his mouth. He stared down at the sword embedded in his chest, in shock. Had it really come to this? Had all his plans been for naught?
    "Taste justice, evildoer!"
Al-Ahmed's gaze travelled upwards to the triumphant adventurers who stood before him, weapons and armour gleaming in the torchlight of his chambers. This battle had been hard-fought and their victory well-earned. Al-Ahmed was no pushover. But there was breath left in him yet, and he would not allow their assumptions and taunts to go unchallenged.
"Do you... have any idea... what you have done?" he coughed, blood spraying into the air. "So much time... so much effort..."
"We know all about your plot against the rightful ruler of this realm," the foremost adventurer said, leaning forward to grasp the hilt of the sword embedded in Al-Ahmed's chest. "About how you planned to cast him from his throne!"
"The Sultan is a FOOL!" Al-Ahmed snarled, through clenched teeth. "A pitiful manchild with no understanding of what it takes to rule! He did not DESERVE the throne he sat upon!"
"And are we to suppose that you do, traitorous cur? A man who has no understanding of loyalty has no place as a leader!" the adventurer shouted, his face mere inches from Al-Ahmed's.
Al-Ahmed began to chuckle, and then to laugh, and then to laugh uproariously, thoroughly unnerving his foes even as his clothes ran red with his blood. The adventurers all stepped back, standing at the ready, anticipating some new threat to be revealed.

"You believed... I wanted the throne for myself? HAH! The only thing... I wish to do with that accursed thing... is to destroy it!" Al-Ahmed cackled, his eyes manic and wide. "And to speak of loyalty... I serve a greater master than that fool Sultan!"
"Then truly you are even more foul and vile than we believed," the adventurers' leader reasoned. "Not acting to control this country, but to destroy it! And now we know there is another, darker force that we must again seek out and destroy before this land will be safe..."
"You know NOTHING!" shouted Al-Ahmed, with his dying breaths. "You may have killed me... but there are others like me. You cannot stop all of us..." He suddenly lunged forward, the sword still embedded deep in his chest, grabbing the adventurer's arm in a vice-like grip, and said his final words.
"I serve FREEDOM... and one day, this land will be a REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY! POWER TO... the people..."
Al-Ahmed fell down to the ground, dead. His plans lay in ruins, his accomplices all slain or imprisoned, and his scheme to depose the Sultan foiled. The adventurers looked sheepishly at one another for some time.
"Well... shit," one of them finally volunteered. The leader sighed, and the despondent adventurers sheathed their weapons.
    "Not again."

There's a great example of that too. It's called, "The entire Legend of the Galactic Heroes Series".

Both Yang Wenli are opposed to one another and are purely good; but one represents a corrupt representative democracy, and the other represents a golden age monarchy.

Both are good, but different good. Both are brilliant, but differently so. Both have good plans and intentions, but those plans and intentions are opposed.

The troops swarmed the fields, moving towards the lights of the city; all wore black and various shades of gray, their equipment muffled by silken rags and darkened by cosmetic alterations. Like a pool of shadows, they crept around the perimeter of the walled city, carrying crates, cases, lengthy boxes.

Stealthily, they constructed the first of the siege engines, the dirigibles inflated by covertly-built steam plants and the framework for a full five thousand fifty-foot ladders were created from the trees of the forest, felled in total silence.

Over the course of the next six hours, they worked in unrelenting haste, the few mistakes corrected by the watchful eyes of engineer-sergeants. Eventually, it came to pass that a full two hours before dawn, they were finished, ready to move.

Over the center of the city, in the downtown pavilion, a flare was fired straight up, the dirigibles now dark clouds hanging over the city.

On cue, the entirety of the massed swarm moved up the ladders around the city's wall, standing atop them and holding aloft lengthy boxes, pointing them at the city's heart.

    >Happy birthday, Morgorvia!

The speakers blasted the first message as the dirigibles released glitter, confetti and streamers by the ton.

    >Just as planned.

I want to give an example of how brilliant schemes of good work, and I honestly can't think of a better example than Liar Game.

It's basically a manga about two good masterminds that go up against an underground pyramid scheme organization ripping people off for millions and winning purely by being good and brilliant enough to manipulate both the game and their opponents to their own ends.

I'm going to post a few pages to show you what it's all about.

There's basically an early chapter where an evil mastermind will declare the particular game they're playing to be something evil like domination, and where they turn it around and show that the stronger option (but harder) is something like friendship. But far from being contrived, it's always brilliant because they have to manipulate people to do good, and to act in spite of overwhelming fear and greed.

By the way, this may well be your next Paladin.

Also, since I mentioned Paladins, the best example of a "good mastermind" paladin is undoubtedly Paksenarrion from the Deed of Paksenarrion series. Warning, spoilers below.

The forces of evil have the good heir to the throne trapped. Paks allows them to take her for three days where she will be undoubtedly tortured and then killed, in return for freeing the King. She is taken to the thieves guild, which had been completely infiltrated by the god of torture.

Over three days, she is relentlessly tortured, beaten, and raped. At one point, she is given the option to save the life of a young girl or watch her be killed by her torturers. She states she cannot renounce her allegiance to her god, and that the evil being committed is by the torturers. She prays to her god to save the girl's soul and give her an easy death. The scene continues until the time is finished.

Finally, they prepare to throw out her body, only to find that the time has expired. Most of the thieves guild, having seen the terrible acts of the god of torture's priests, turn their back on it. Once the time is up, her god heals her wounds and smites the dark priests, restoring her to life.

She's asked later by a member of the thieves guild why she would let herself be tortured like that, and she responds simply.

She could have stormed in and killed the priests, but her suffering was the only way to save the Thieves guild.

Paksenarrion is the best paladin ever.

One manga had an evil organisation dedicated to world peace, helping the sick, the poor, etc and ensuring more humans could live long healthy lives. Their mutated thugs would steal proprietary technology that could be used to help people.

The end goal? To cause the extinction of humanity by causing it to overpopulate the Earth leading to their inevitable death.

Two Kamen Rider like heroes set out to stop them. A funny scene was where one had gotten to the big evil boss and discovered the plan. The big boss pointed out he couldn't stop them and just said he should leave. But the families of all the goons he'd killed had other ideas and attacked the hero while the big boss pleaded for an end to the violence. The hero just started tearing his way through an army of women, children and old men.
    Shit was hilarious.

It was then that the Paladin Blacksteel felt the divine power left him. He had committed the final, irredeemable act. He had broken his oath to his god and aided the Devil in his scheme.

“There is no longer a reason to fight, EX-Paladin. You have given me the weapons I will use to kill the villagers. You have given me the spells to destroy their families. And you have done it all to save the life of one stupid girl.” The devil smiled, full of sinister intent. “There is nothing left for you on the side of good, stupid little Paladin.”

“Perhaps you are right... but we had a deal. I have provided your weapons and the plans to attack the town. Now release the girl, as we had agreed.”

“Very well.” The devil replied. “A deal is a deal.” The young girl scampered past the Paladin, now as afraid of him as the demon. “It isn't like it matters. She'll just run back to her village and get killed with the rest of them.”

“That was not the deal.” The Fallen Paladin said, furious.

“Then perhaps you should have worded it better, you fool! The vow to let her live was only until you had finished aiding me!” The Devil hissed, triumphant. “But we can strike a new deal. You can still save the girl, and I might not even drag the whole village back to the Nine Hells with me. There is only one thing you must do. You have already lost the patronage of your god. Simply swear allegiance to the Dark God of Death, and you will save them.”

For a moment, the Fallen Paladin shook as though afraid, hanging his head. It was only then that the demon realized that he was not shaking with fear – he was laughing. The laughter increased as he threw his head back and roared with mirth.

“Do you think this is funny, you fool?” The Devil snarled. “My Half-Fiend goblin army is ready to attack the town!”

“You are the one to make the mistake, Hellspawn. Look at your weapons.”

As the demon turned to find the blades he had previously approved of, he recoiled in fear. Each one now glowed with a previously hidden holy mark.

“These weapons are useless to you, and a shipment of blades just like them will have just arrived at the local Militia hall, along with the location of your army. I think you'll also find that the plans I've given you will lead your forces directly into a trap.”

“But...” The demon sputtered, “You aided me! You have fallen! Why would you still aid the villagers?”

“You fool.” The Ex-Paladin said calmly. “It was always my plan to fall. In return for one paladin falling, the souls and lives of a thousand villagers are saved, and your plans decimated. Better, I can still atone. And the girl is safely out of your reach, now.” He put his hand down into one of the boxes and drew a holy blade.

“And holy powers or no, this blade will still smite evil just fine. All of your schemes, all of your plans. All is undone. TODAY, GOOD WILL TRIUMPH!”

The ex-Paladin raise his blade, ready to purge and smite.

Well that's really not an issue. They don't even have to fight them, they just have to encourage the proliferation of technologies that feed people, help people colonize other worlds, and reduce the effects of poverty caused by overpopulation.

Using good for evil ends is an interesting inversion of the Good Mastermind, but it fails easily if you realize what they're doing and help them - with the proviso that you simply fill in the gaps of what they're doing.

I've read it a few times. It's technically a book for "kids", but it's still Pratchett, and still utterly brilliant.

As a note, Granny Weatherwax is another excellent example of brilliant good that looks evil on the surface. She manages to play off practically everybody and ultimately emerge victorious while never actually being evil. She's ruthless, prideful, and mean, but she's also undeniably right practically all of the time, fundamentally good, and will NOT tolerate anyone messing with the people of Lancre.

Another example of a Good character that appears to be evil (although she can be argued to be Chaotic Neutral, at times).

    Lina Inverse.

Greedy, self centered, obsessed with power and money, she's also a person who has fought and defeated demons and gods, often selflessly, to save the world and her friends. She bears intense responsibility for her actions, occasionally going well beyond what any truly "selfish" character should to do good.

Despite all of this, people of her world think of her as the coming of the apocalypse.

"People say that if you run into a storm then you should pray to god for salvation, but if you run into Lina Inverse you should curse him, because there is no hope for you."

Someone actually said that about someone who has saved the world multiple times and killed a shard of the DEVIL HIMSELF.

(Mildly justified. She's like a walking nuclear arsenal.)

Unless you count grounding his daughter FOR ETERNITY (it didn't take, she got out of it the very next chapter) repeatedly for offenses like tardiness, not doing her homework, not doing her chores, talking back to her dad, and hanging out with a bunch of delinquents pretending to be do-gooders.

Damn if I can remember the title.

It's important to remember that a proper good overlord is NOT harmless, even if they seem very silly. Not to evil, anyway. They go after evil with the same zeal that evil goes after good.

It's just that their methods differ. A Good Overlord is concerned with redemption and legal punishment, and an evil overlord is concerned with corruption and torture.

A good overlord won't hesitate to bring a criminal to justice, or to manipulate them into a position where they are forced to do good, starting them down the path to redemption.

A good overlord is just that - a LORD of all that is good, a master of mental gymnastics, who is just as excellent at manipulation of other people as his evil counterpart, but never stops being fundamentally good.

They are always the one to find a third option. They are the Good equivalent of David Xanatos; always doing good even in defeat, and rarely tasting that bitter situation.
