    265 KB Design a mech Anonymous 03/05/11(Sat)22:10 No.14142497
Your task mechwarriors of /tg/ is to submit designs for review to a remote system of the Inner Sphere around the mid 3060s.

They have issued the following requirements:
Contract 1: A light mech, suitable for fighting battle armours and regular infantry, as well as recon duty for the system's mechanised forces.
Contract 2: A medium main battle mech, capable of engaging other mechs and tanks.
Contract 3: A heavy mech for providing support and assault capabilities against defended locations.

Ideally these mechs should work well together.
Now for the limitations: 3060 tech is the maximum, No PPCs other than the basic type, no Streak SRMs, no XL fusion engines, no FF armour, no Omnimechs.
Budget limitations: 4 Million C-Bills maximum per unit for the light mech, 6 million for the Medium, 10 million for the heavy. Bonus points on getting beneath those costs by a significant margin (a million or two). Surviveability is also valued, as is ease of repair.

Gentlemen, start your copies of skunkwerks.
    >> Anonymous 03/05/11(Sat)22:18 No.14142591
    Additional limitations:

    No endosteel.
Gauss only on the heavy at a limitation of one weapon only.

ER mediums and small lasers are comparatively recent developments, and are available, but only half the total lasers (not counting PPCs) may be ER.

Alright, I chose to do a 3025-era trio of 'Mechs for the savvy Merc, as well as the cash-strapped Successor State.

Firstly, these 'Mechs save you cash. How? Well they all use the same parts! Most of them anyway. For starters, the reliable 240 Fusion Engine. Comes standard on all three models. That means one power plant, one order, one spot in your stockyard. Saves space, time, and money as well.

Next, weapons. The tried-and-true Medium Laser, 5-rack Long Range Missile, and the Large Laser. What's not t love? Reliable systems proven their worth in weight. And now, because all three chassis use the same model weapons, they are easily interchanged or replaced in case of battlefield damage. This would be an IMMENSE help to your logistical corp, since there are far fewer parts to keep track of or order, and as a result, less of your precious Dropship space is wasted!

The best part is the cost. We're completely flexible as to how you order. Need a Recon Lance? No problem, 4 Ibex, coming your way. Need a mixed lance to do patrol work or defend a complex? We offer package deals on a lance of 2 Ibex, one Implala, and one Aurochs, with a discount that keeps money in your pockets.

Now... what can I put you down for?

You know, it's kinda hard to do survivability when most of the crit-saving things like XL Gyros were found after 3060. Just saying.

Empty side torsos mean that any crits there will automatically transfer to the CT. That gives you some of the fragility of an XL engine without the weight savings. This is the reason why the Battle Cobra isn't actually as good as it seems to be at first glance.

Putting the jump jets in the side torsos would remedy this, with the added bonus of allowing you to jump even if you're waist deep in water.

The Jackknife is the scout mech of the force. Affordable, reliable, and while it may not be the fastest scout mech out there it's highly maneuverable with six rugged jump jets that allow for pursuit or retreat through te4rrain that would be difficult or downright hazardous to planet-bound mechs. A pair of flamers and machine guns make short work of infantry, while an ER Medium Laser takes care of any battle armor at safe ranges. Lastly, the Jacknife is equipped with target Acquisition Gear, allowing it to work with the Jack-A-Nape, discussed further below.

The Jackrabbit is our medium mech. Falling on the heavy side of mediums, it is not a very fast mech, capable of only 64 k/ph. However, it makes up for this deficiency with the maximum possible armor coverage for a mech of its weight. The basic factory loadout is an MRM 30 and a PPC, providing a strong punch which coupled with its high armor makes the Jackrabbit a rock in the ever-ferocious sea of battle.

Lastly comes the Jack-A-Nape. A heavy mech, the Jack is designed specifically to work with the Jackknife. A slow, plodding mech only five tons short of being an Assault mech, the Jack-A-Nape is capable of providing heavy firepower at all ranges and functioning as an artillery platform. Armed with a potent Arrow IV missile system, the Jack is able to fire either standard explosive missiles or special guided munitions at targets acquired by the Jackknife. An Ultra AC/10 provides more medium-range firepower which is backed up by two SRM 4s. CASE protects the ammunition of Jack-A-Nape, ensuring that ammo explosions do not destroy it outright.

Here's your light mech for all your harassing and reconnaissance needs.

The Freikorp is a light, 30 ton Mech with a speed of 120 km/h. As a light Mech, armor was not the focus. Instead, the pure speed of the Mech will turn it into a difficult target, especially when using the terrain to its advantage. Enemies will be further frustrated by the Freikorp's Guardian ECM suite, which will not only prevent enemy electronic guided weapons from homing in on itself but also all nearby allies.

The speed of the Mech along with its elusiveness will naturally lend it well to reconnaissance. Along with your standard issue Mech sensor arrays, the Freikorp houses a Beagle Active Probe which will deliver precise specifications on enemy units and even seek out hidden units running passive. A clean sweep of an area can be assured with effective use of the Freikorp.

For armament, our designers sought for the ability to stand off with enemy while also being able to engage lesser targets with maximum firepower. Every weapon on a light Mech is crucial, and the inclusion of the "Fire Sprayer" Medium Range Missile 10 System allows the Freikorp to engage enemies both at long range and point blank with a serious punch. Three "Solar Flare" Small Lasers mounted on the Left Arm allow the Freikorp to close onto targets of opportunity and lend additional firepower along with its ample missile firepower. A "Xiao Du" Targeting Computer negatives the innate inaccuracy of MRM systems, and allows the Tri-Small Laser array to hone in on elusive targets such as enemy Battle Armor.

Some pilots complain about the compactness of the Cockpit on the Freikorp, but piloting the machine is not overly difficult as it can still cruise at a brisk 70 km/h, which is a sizable distance itself.

This package of well rounded intelligence gathering abilities, versatile firepower, and speed can all be yours for the low price of 2,400,000 C-bills! Our factories are standing by!

I want to design a mech, but I have no idea of what game this is…

The “David” M110: General Army Mech

Main armament is a ‘chest’ mounted M110 203 mm howitzer crew loaded cannon with barrel compensator, effective range. This will bust tanks, infantry, mechs and buildings alike by direct or indirect fire. It is even capable of launching tactical nuclear shells.
Above its torso it also has a 40mm bofors autocannon on an anti aircraft mount as well as a sophisticated targeting system giving it the ability to shoot down incoming missiles with a 75% success rate. For anti personnel it mounts an XM307 heavy machine gun either side where its arms should be on a ball mount with a traverse of 180 degrees left to right, and 100 degrees up and down. These can be controlled by remote or by the commander and crew of the cannon complex.
It stands on 3 tank tracks arranged in a triangle, each tread has a cylindrical wheel in the center parallel to the direction of the track. When all three tracks are engaged this allows it to turn faster than any tank aswell as begin movement in 360 degrees in any direction without preparation. They are usually fitted with rubber tracks for urban areas. The driver is able to fire a forward mounted XM307 with HE rounds

The whole mech sealed against IR detection, it is also capable of launching smoke and can deploy a camo net by aid of pre set smoke launchers in 10 seconds. The crew of 5 are armed with P2000 9mm pistols for self defense and the M7 soft tank helmet. The power plant for the tracks and ‘hip’ turret is a Schafer X2 plasma flask.

Comparable to other medium weight main army battle mechs the “David” lives up to its name, making maximum use of existing terrain and its mobility to mount a truly versatile battle weapon. Costing about $29.1m to produce it is a cost effective peace of battle equipment.

Large Pulse Laser, 7/11/7 movement. These are my only requirements.

7 jump is the point at which you have a numerical advantage over a stationary enemy, where your penalty for jumping is 3 and their penalty for trying to lead your movement is 4.

At 7/11/7, the optimum chassis weight is 40 tons, with an XL engine, the optimum chassis is 50 tons. All the above applies to both Inner Sphere and Clan designs.

My production ready (level 2) design is an XL engine, LPL, Targeting Computer, C3 Slave, and Guardian ECM with Endo Steel Internal Structure and the maximum armor for a 50 ton mech. If there is a canon design that fits these criteria, then let me know. Otherwise, it's the Flitfire.

My field tests have provided enough information that adding a second crewman increases exponentially the effectiveness of the vehicle, the gunner and driver configuration allow optimal combat performance by allowing the vehicle to plot its path and operate its armament without distraction or over tasking the pilot and gunner, a third crew member can be added to coordinate the crew and take charge of communication and target acquisition along with the sensors.

This is what I got for a light. You want recon? You want anti-battle armor and infantry? Then check out this little devil. Packing 2 MPLs, a Flamer and an A-Pod, it can handle itself reasonably well on its own. But it really shines when it's doing recon--a BAP ensures you'll always see them coming and a TAG means you'll see them out, too. This little guy is packed tight with all the latest gadgets and gizmos too! It comes standard with C3 integration for all your long-range bombardment needs!

Very well, my design for Contract 2 is the Lesser Flitfire. It's stripped down to 40 tons, and with a standard engine. It still retains the Large Pulse Laser and 7/11/7 movement of the much more complex "greater" Flitfire, as well as the Endo Steel chassis, but the bulk of the engine was almost entirely taken out of the armor, leaving it with a pitiful 5.5 tons of standard armor, roughly the maximum amount for a 25 ton mech.

While the design is woefully under-armored, the cost does comes in just under four Million C-bills, making it fit almost into the light category contract. It would almost certainly take a suicidal or immensely cocky pilot to bring this to the field, but if we're talking Periphery, then there are no shortage of candidates to choose from.

So what you're saying is that, for each of your units you have to train and be able to support at least twice as many men as a mech? Dayum.

But seriously, yeah. In RL, mechs are inefficient and will never overcome tanks due to a lot of factors. But, and here's what you gotta remember: Battletech isn't real life.

Here we go... Now one thing to bear in mind; They're meant to work together in a 2/1/1 Lance organisation. 1 Heavy, 1 Medium, and 2 Light. If not, then the C3 is still useful for any with a connector.

The Light has 6T of armour and moves at 6/9
The medium has 8T of armour and only moves at 3/5. It's slow but long-range and hugs cover for most of the time, also peppering the enemy at a long range helps keep it alive I guess.
The Heavy has 12.5T, is obviously a Quad, and moves at 3/5 too. The C3 network makes the light mechs work in pairs while the others blast at the priority targets.

Light: IMBR-1 Imbrium. A dream of a mech, this 30-tonner packs a pair of medium pulses with enough bite to actually concern a PA squad, and backs it up with a trio of heatless MGs. Concerned pilot should be aware that a simple field refit allows us to remove a single MG for the new CASE system, although the loss of firepower may have unpleasant consequences against infantry.
The design can only run out to 97kph, but its 180m jump capacity keeps it acceptably mobile in the worst of terrain (although pilots are cautioned to avoid jumping more than 100m while firing all weapons to avoid undesirable heat buildup)
Torso-mounted jet ports, and leg-mounted single heatsinks allow this design to quickly douse fires and cool off from rapid strikes.
Finally, the design lacks hand and lower arm actuators, allowing a hard-pressed pilot to cover his rear with a minimum of twisting - easing distractions on him during what is no doubt a trying time, and especially important against those pesky Elemental headhunters. On a related note, the rear armor of the torso is reinforced to take a pair of MG or Small Laser hits in any location (although this means the forward armor on the sides can be stripped with a PPC or heavy autocannon hit)

All this can be yours for only 2.4 mCb: more than twice the firepower and nearly twice the armor of the eternally-popular Locust at only a 50% markup!

    >>No endo-steel brah.

    >>Now for the limitations: 3060 tech is the maximum, No PPCs other than the basic type, no Streak SRMs, no XL fusion engines, no FF armour, no Omnimechs.

Fuck off. You're wrong. To continue.

    Medium: Nubium INBM-3A
This little number is the solution to all your vehicle and mech problems. A cool-running LBX autocannon provides the hitting power of a PPC, and the cluster ammunition it can bring to the party will savage any non-tracked vehicle in seconds. A pair of Sphere-renowned Martell mediums and a new Extended-range model round out the primary firepower: a 10-tube rocket launcher adds a budget bite in close quarters.
Triple-strength Myomers increase the admittedly slightly lethargic speed of the mech, and allow a pilot to expand his heat envelope without fearing sudden paralysis: the mean kick they add is only icing on the cake.
Your future won't be cloudy with the protection technology on display here - almost 9 tonnes of armor and the new CASE system guard your pilots! (More than a ton faces the side torsos, adding even more protection to the vulnerable ammo bins). The rear armor is slightly lower than its Light companion, but then it's not hunting the Headhunters..

    Reliability? This baby has it in spades. a standard 180 is interchangable with its lighter cousin;

At 4.3 mCb, the design compares favorably in price with many NewTech lights, yet with far more survivability and hitting power. A slightly lower-tech variant (one of our initial market offerings) keeps the triple myomers, and downgrades the autocannon. The single ER laser is replaced with another standard Martell.

Gah, idiot pissed me off and I flubbed half the sales pitch. How unprofessional of me.

Reliability? This baby has it in spades. Its standard 180 is interchangable with its lighter cousin's. The Martell needs no introduction, and can be quickly replaced should the need arise. Fully functional hand actuators allow the mech to assist in repair and loading operations, and the rocket launcher module can be quickly snapped out and replaced - a field reload with trained pilots is a matter of only a few minutes, and can be accomplished in the rudest of ammo dumps.
Note: We would like to remind you that attaching another weapon in this position or inserting machine gun ammo for any reason voids the factory warranty.

At 4.3 mCb, the design compares favorably in price with many NewTech lights, yet with far more survivability and hitting power. A slightly lower-tech variant (one of our initial market offerings) keeps the triple myomers, and downgrades the autocannon. The single ER laser is replaced with another standard Martell; this design is retained as a budget option, with a staggeringly low 3.9 million price tag.

I had a dream the night before last that I was piloting a Javelin LAM. The SRM racks were moved to being missile pods that came up over the shoulders and in air mode they were under delta-wings. Also in air mode it looked like a MiG-21. Being a dream that's about as far as detail went into the mechanics of the thing, and I was never the biggest Javelin fan but I'd take it.

I thought there were more LAM choices than just the Stinger, Wasp, and Phoenix Hawk LAM but after looking I can't find any evidence of it. So my anti-mech choice would be to build one of those.

Very well: with the emendations to the contract, we could produce an "export" version of the Imbrium for your contract. This version would remove a heat sink and a jet port: slightly slower, but with none of the bite lost, this proposed version would ratchet down the cost by almost a quarter-million Cb.

Other possibilities include replacing the machine guns whole-cloth with a pair of RLs, although this would degrade the original anti-infantry firepower, or substituting an Active Probe (although sourcing the items locally would substantially increase our production costs, a shipment of the devices would be met with open arms and substantial factory credit)

Finally, the Commander of your wave of mechs - the Undulum.

We've used many of the same systems here as on our other mechs, to aid both logisitics and training. A Lord's Light PPC and LBX-10 provide a hard bite at ranges of up to nearly 600m, while a pair of Martell mediums add a significant kick to deal with those pesky recon units. A Diverse Optics extended-range laser joins the PPC in the left arm for midrange work, back-shooting, and short-range coverage. 3 tons of ammo for the heavy auto ensure both flexibility and endurance.
It's not all roses on the maintenance front, unfortunately: this 60-ton design does require a Vox 240 instead of the 180s of its kin, and the ravenous appetite of the PPC and secondary weapons necessitated an upgrade to Freezers.

Without a significant missile armament, we chose to focus instead on a solid armor layout : 12t of standard armor will allow the pilot to weather even the firepower of many equivalent Clan designs long enough to land a few solid hits, and every portion of the mech but the head can withstand a super-heavy autocannon hit without damaging the internals. All sections of the rear torso are Large Laser rated, and offer a close to 50% survival rate after a full minute of combat with a Headhunter point!

We offer the contract at an initial 5.5m Cbills per unit, with volume discounts.

We also offer a refit (field-grade) which swaps the arm-mounted AC and feed bins for an LRM-20, 3t of ammo, and a second Diverse Optics laser. What it lacks in the raw flexibility of its sister design, it makes up in reach and hitting power. The 150,000 Cb discount it offers merely sweetens the pot.

For our more discerning customers, we offer the -M1 design packaged with the -M2 arm and bins, together with conversion schematics, for a mere 500,000 Cb: a competent technical crew can accomplish the refit in a matter of days, adding a tactical flexibility to your purchase!

To conclude our series, we would like to point out several important considerations.
First is the ease you will find in sourcing components: the only weapons not tried and proven on thousands of battlefields are the LBX and the ER mediums, both currently easily acquired: replacing or downgrading the weapons if access is lost is a simple matter, although a small amount of combat endurance and flexibility is lost if the LBX must be replaced. Ammo regulation is simple - class-10 autocannon and MG ammunition, with a possible side of standard LRM Sixpack will be all your stressed logistics chain need handle. Most of the equipment is both cheap and serviceable, rendering it ideal for rookies and veterans alike.

Furthermore, the similar loadouts of our Medium and Heavy designs allow our customers to use the former as a trainer for the heavier design without diverting critical - and expensive - resources away from the places they're needed most.

Finally, all our designs come in at less than 60% of the contract budget: twice the mech for the same money's never a bad deal..

We eagerly await your response, and invite you to examine our available BattleROM footage (courtesy of the generous test pilots of Outreach)

fortunately, we came prepared for just such an eventuality; all our proposals clearly list the available armor.

Incidentally, if the issuer is willing to splurge, we can also place TSMs on the Undulum heavy at a bargain price of only .9m Cb, raising the design to 6.3 million and greatly increasing its utility. This is a test design, of course, building off our earlier Medium, but I think we will both find it a profitable venture.

First up we have the Zzapman, a light 30 ton mech, amply armoured for it's task, it comes with 2 small pulse lasers which will see it mowing down conventional infantry like a combine harvester mows wheat. Supporting this for heavier targets such as battle armours, 4 medium lasers provide ample firepower with no need for ammunition and easily available parts.

And to round off we have the 70 ton Blinding man. Blinding? It certainly is with the firepower it packs at an affordable price!

A pair of arm mounted PPCs give it long range striking ability with massive force to punch those holes needed.

And who needs cluster hit weaponry like SRMs or LBX Autocannon (bah, supply trains) to exploit those gouges you carve out of targets with the PPCs when you pack 8 Medium lasers. Damage spread? You betcha, and with a whole lot more force than conventional weaponry allows.

All that wrapped in a respectable 4/6 speed and 17 tons of armour.

Well if you have salvage rights and the time/ability to recover salvage from the battlefield the biggest thing to not is that:
    1) If a mech has any internals left in its center torso, it can be rebuilt. Mechs with the center torso destroyed are cored and cannot be repaired.
    2) Vehicles missing a side cannot usually be repaired.
    3) Gyros of different weights have parts that are not interchangeable.

Bit off-topic here, but when I heard "Light Mech/Medium Mech/Heavy Mech", my mind went in another direction entirely.

First Mech, lightweight, designed for aerial recon and combat, optimized for maneuverability and long-distance capabilities. Really more of a glorified jet fighter then anything else. Colored with red highlights and based on some sort of bird in overall design.

Second mech, medium sized, a five car land-train packing as much weaponry as possible. Easily applied sand or jungle camouflage as the situation dictates. The front end has a snake motif for no particularly good reason.

Third mech, large and huge, a glorified tank with a deep blue color scheme and a heavy duty ramming shield on the front end, sporting a rhinoceros beetle horn, along with a heavy gun (perhaps a missile platform, or a railgun, or whatever else is necessary) attached to the top. Tank treads underneath are attached to actuating arms, allowing it to raise up to give the gun even more range.

...and then they come with the option to combine and form a megazord.
    >> Anonymous 03/06/11(Sun)15:42 No.14150814
For a second I found myself clever for coming up with a thematically appropriate mech to be named "Mantis Shrimp", with only 2 ultra ac20s for weapons. The second hit from that cavitation bubble is a bitch.

...But then I remembered that there's already a mech whose gimmic is two ultra autocannon 20s.

Gentlemen, gentlemen. I think we've all been forgetting a little something. And that something is is that if you want to save money, then there's few better alternatives than good ol' fashioned, tried and true vehicles!

This hoverin' baby's got more speedn' darn near anything that's been brought forward to you so far! And it's armored with a full nine, you heard me right, NINE TONS of Starslab armor! What thirty ton mech can match that? For weapons, the Balthazar comes with a Medium Pulse Laser and an ER Small Laser for mowin' down any infantry or them Clan Battle Armors that it comes across. Next up fer your viewin' pleasure I present to you, the Diablos! Fresh off the production lines, the Diablos combines a high-powered engine capable of pulling up to 86 kay-pee-ache with twelve and a half tons of armor to transport its Plasma Rifle and Medium Pulse Laser to wherever on the battlefield it's needed Said plasma rifle, may I add is capable of increasing heat in any battlemechs the Diablos may come across, possibly forcing it to shut itself down if the pilot ain't good enough!. All for the low price of two and a half million!

Last but far from the least, lay-dies and gentlemen, is the Baal heavy tank. Now, don't you go laughing at the name, there's a rich bit o' Irish mythology behind the name, but that can wait for another time. The Baal is specifically meant as a tank-of-the-line. While it maintains god speed for its weight, the Baal has no turret, with all its weapons fixed to the front of the hull. Now, this means that unless you're savvy enough to provide it with some escorts, like perhaps a Diablos or a pair of Balthazars, a fast enemy could flank around and give a thumpin' to the rear of a Ball. But in that at least, the Ball can stand up for itself. Seventeen and a half tons of armor! Most concentrated at the front, yes, but even the rear has enough armor to shrug off a full salvo from a Demolisher! As for its armament? Why, no less than a Hextes Gauss Rifle! The front of the tank also contains see-ae-ess-ee, in case of an unlucky hit by an enemy, and in the event that its primary weapon should be so compromised, the Baal does has an ER Small Laser to fall back on while it makes its way back to base for repairs. All for less than three and a half million cee-bills.

Thank yeh kindly for your time.

You do realize that even on single shot, it's gonna run out of ammo after 8 rounds of firing, 4 if they're both doing Ultra, right?

    >>14151439
As a suggestion, try putting the ACs in the torso instead of the arms. The torso is better armored and they won't be destroyed by limb destruction. Also, it lets you punch after shooting. That and lack of ammo seems to be the biggest problem I can see.

Pushed the ACs into the torso, but I had to squash the fusion engine. The punching arm servos are coming out of armor tonnage, but what can you do. I jiggered the armor around to reflect that the right arm is basically useless except for punching. The design is really starved for crits, as you can see. Storing ammo in the left arm seems silly to me, but now I wonder why no one has ever tried making exploding fists before. Give it some armor-piercing, punch into some poor hit location and do direct internal damage with EXPLODING PALM STRIKE -- I guess it's sorta like a retractable blade but explosive and automatically blows up your hand actuator.

A lot of the mediums are surprisingly towards the lighter end of the scale, this nets them a speed bonus but many designs lack firepower.

Same with the heavies, a lot of 60-65 ton designs. The Storm series are pretty beefy for their tonnage though I'm wary of the armament of the light.

The Agile is a 35 ton light mech, with anemic armor for a mech of its size. However, the anti-infantry armaments are considerable enough - sporting three SRM-2 launchers armed with inferno ammo, and four flamethrowers. Few infantry, even battle armor, would enjoy being within the Agile's sights.

A unique feature of the Agile is the small cockpit, allowing all three SRM-2 launchers plus ammo, to fit within the main body and head of the mech. As well, the entire right torso is a dedicated cooling unit, giving the mech an odd hunchbacked and spiky appearance; When firing weapons, the spines, spikes, and vanes of the torso heatsink will glow a dull red.

The Agile also sports a complete recce suite - with both a TAG and Active Probe stuffed into the left torso.

The total pricetag, excluding pilot, is around 3.1 million c-bills.

The Valiant is a 45 ton medium mech, designed foremost as an anti-clan asset. It sports a fairly hefty engine for a medium mech, allowing it to maintain distance with faster Clan units, while its suite of close range weapons give it a punch that is hard to beat in this weight category. Additionally, the torso-mounted plasma cannon allows the Valiant to heat up and slow its canister born prey, while also providing adequate anti-vehicle and battle armor capability.

Perhaps the strangest design consideration of the Valiant was to forego all arm mounted weapons entirely, leaving the mech extremely vulnerable to flanking attackers. However, this same drawback allowed the arms to be down-sized and streamlined, providing additional tonnage to other areas of the mech.

The unit as a whole, comes in at a relatively cheap 3.9 million c-bills.

I might as well throw in a few custom mechs I've retooled to meet OP's specs.

First up, Delta Technologies is proud to present the 85-ton Ballista. The first and last word in explosive-ordinance delivery systems. 15.5 tons of armor protect the Ballista's 12 LRM racks, guaranteeing a wide dispersal of its two tons of Thunder munitions. Four tons of conventional munitions extend its battlefield usefulness and help it hammer units large and small. Its quartet of conventional medium lasers provide ample discouragement from closing too quickly, and its fully articulated hands make it a mercenary's dream, easily laboring when not firmly securing its owner's mastery of the terrain. Using a Torso Mounted cockpit further helps protect the pilot from the pittance of return fire any survivor may offer, shielding him from the bulk of incoming fire and making 'lucky headshots' a mere annoyance, at worst.

    Here, I present the Purgatory.

The Purgatory is a monstrous 75 ton heavy mech, the top of the scale for its weight class, and designed to be a brute of a fighter.

The primary armament of the Purgatory are a pair of PPC's designed for putting the hurt down-range, followed up by an expensive Artemis IV linked LRM15 launcher. While the heatsinks of the Purgatory are unable to keep up with prolonged use of all three weapons, let alone the entire armament, they do provide adequate cooling for the mech.

A pair of ER Medium and medium lasers round out the firepower of the Purgatory, giving it additional deterrence against anything that gets uncomfortably close.

However, the considerable firepower of this unit comes at a price - it is slow. For the stated goal of assaulting fortified positions, any speed is enough speed, but engagements against maneuvering forces and elements may strain the capabilities of this design.

    Pricetag: 7.3 million c-bills

Alright, moving on to some other things, I've always wanted to see more Star League Clan designs.

So, with that in mind, I'm porting a bunch of the Royal SLDF units to Clan IIC versions. Just straight ports to Clan tech, more or less. Whatever weight savings are made go straight towards keeping the mech in line with the Star League version. [e.g. the Mongoose IIC here has an added heatsink to keep the heat curve, and a Light Tag because, well, there's not really much else to do with 0.5 tons, and it's a scout mech anyhow.]

I'm porting the Royal SLDF units simply because the bulk of the Royal units left on the Exodus. It just makes sense for the Clans to have tons of these things laying around. [Upgraded, and un-upgraded, I suppose]. I've always found it odd how none of the Clans make much of any use of all the old Star League tech they've got, especially after the invasion and Jihad, when they needed to rebuild their forces.

In the picture, Mongoose IIC, based on the Mongoose 66b. It has an extra double heatsink and light TAG.

I'm not familiar with battletech all that much. When I was younger I always liked looking at the books, but never really took the time to learn the rules. I really don't know where that falls in terms of relative armor, or even how many shots the mech has. I just put guns on a mech and decided to post it.

Incidentally, where do I learn of battletech? Is there a wiki that explains it, or do I need to find some books?
    >> снайпер 03/07/11(Mon)05:44 No.14158876
    >>14158833
Well, you've actually given the mech a decent amount of firepower, but the machinegun and AC/10 are kinda black sheep to the LRM20 and gauss. Once you learn more about the game it becomes a lot easier to know what weapons you want to pair up together. For instance, a Gauss for long range, and then some energy weapons for short range.

Your Gauss rifle also only has enough ammo for 8 shots, which is good for about half your standard match length. 12-16 shots is the sweet spot for typical games, although it's a bit min-maxed since there's no consideration for long drawn out campaigns like you'd actually see in the Inner Sphere.

As for armor - there's two types. Speed armor, where you keep moving fast enough that you are never hit, and actual armor, which prevents shots from getting into your internals and wrecking your mech.

Your mech has no speed, and very little actual armor. It's basically a walking deathtrap. A single Gauss to the CT would core it and do internal damage.

Love your Hussar IIC... hell, love the Hussar in general (much the annoyance of most people) as a standard issue campaign raider.

Decided to toss around the idea of a late war WoB variant of the Hussar meant to harass the supply lines and logistical assets of the coalition forces that were bearing down on them as the war closed.

Crammed with the most space saving equipment imaginable, the HSR-980-W pushed the small design to it's breaking point. A 300 XL engine and a compact Gyro system were put into it, affording it phenomenal speed. The protect the pilot, a center torso cockpit was install and it's traditional ER Large laser was moved into the head, which now acted as a turret for the next generation raider. It's endosteel frame was sheathed in stealth armor and tied to its required ECM suite. The armor, while heavier than the original Hussar, fell below the Royal incarnation with only 4 tons to protect it. It was hoped the stealth system would be enough to protect the speedy raider.

The few relative few produced served the Blakist forces well in their intended roles, leading to dedicated hunter killer teams having to be organized to hunt them down long after a planet was secured. Most would be destroyed though due to being pressed into direct combat in the desperate last days of the war.

Few would survive the post war years and those that did would be converted back to more traditional models as time progressed and access to stealth armor repair materials grew slim.

Well, if we're going to ignore OP's silly restrictions, then:

Delta Technologies is happy to present the Apache! Designed to replace the aging yet reliable Panther with a faster, sturdier 'mech that will surely stand the test of time as well as that venerable war machine. The Apache's 25-ton design is powered by a 125XL fusion engine. While that may be a bit slow for many recon mechs, the Apache's long-range fire support role makes it a non-issue. A single LB-2X Autocannon allows this efficient little mech to snipe away at any and all foes. It sports two tons of ammunition, one cluster and one slug, fore extended combat and situational versatility. The cockpit has been reduced in size to make room for a cutting edge Targeting Computer, sure to reliably place every shot where it's needed. A pair of ERSmall lasers round out the light mech's compliment of weapons, discouraging infantry and other light mechs from closing. Seven and a half tons of reinforced armor shield the mech from harm, making it sturdier than most other designs of similar weight. All this can be yours for the low, low, LOW price of 2,812,517 C-Bills. A frugal merc is a wise merc, and three of these beautiful mechs can easily provide excellent fire support for a fourth mech, ideally the Ballista area-denial mech mentioned in >>14156910.
Once again providing the discerning mercenary with superior firepower at a superior price, we pride ourselves on our record of efficiency, and on the technical expertise our engineers put into every mech that walks out of our factory. Delta technologies. Changing technology, for a changing galaxy.

For those who prefer a more heavy hitting option, rather than relying on the vagaries of chance, I present the Apache 4a. Replacing the autocannon with an ERPPC, upgrading all the heat sinks to Double-strength, and sporting an extra ton of Hardened Armor. The 4a completely removes the apache's reliance on ammunition, making it ideal for extended deployments, though the range is significantly shortened. It maintains its accuracy and protective qualities, however. Delta Technologies is, after all, committed to keeping it's customers alive and happy. How much would you pay for this mech? It can be yours for a mere 3,164,167 C-Bills! More expensive than the base model Apache, but still worth every bill!

I'm not a fan of the LBX2, the LBX5 on the other hand...

2 ERPPC's/ERLL/LPL's plus 2 LBX5's are one of my favourite weapon configurations.

The LBX5 is cheap, and Clan tech usually has *plenty* of room for two of them. The two of them together act like an LBX10 with greater range and more consistent damage, and paired up with long-range hole punchers like ER Large Lasers makes a really nice weapon combo.

Especially the ERLL. The ERLL and LBX5 have almost exactly the same range bracket, which is simply fantastic. It's like the two guns were made to work together.

Of course, there are times when 'affordable' and 'efficient' just aren't enough to do the job, whatever it may be. As politicians and generals have found out time and again over the centuries, sometimes the only thing that actually gets your point across is having the bigger stick, and using it.

To that end, Delta Technologies presents the TL-3s TESLA. Aptly named, this 100 ton beast sports four light PPCs, allowing you to call down the fury of man-made lightning on anything foolish enough to stand before you. But that's not the only use of electromagnetism in this mech. A pair of light Gauss Rifles allow the pilot to reach out and crush anyone foolish enough to stand against him. Once again, Delta Technologies reaffirms its commitment to keeping its customers alive by mounting the cockpit of the Tesla in its torso, and protecting it with twenty five and a half tons of hardened armor! Further shielding this mech from catastrophic damage are the reinforced internals , making even penetrating hits mere scratches in the pilot's armored shell. The mech's 300XXL engine may superficially seem sluggish to those accustomed to greater speed in their mechs, but with so many particle cannons firing, the mech's triple-strength myomer muscles can easily speed its bulk along. Deploying a full lance of these mechs sends a clear and unmistakable message to any force in the galaxy. That this territory is yours, and that none may pass!

This titan of the battlefield can be yours for 91,662,000 C-Bills. But can you really put a price on peace of mind? Or invulnerability?

Case in point, here's a new loadout for the 3085 Bruin I went and made, using a pair of ERLL's, and LBX5's. [Plus an Artemis enabled LRM10]

Not as much sheer damage output as the original, but oh boy, the range brackets are niiiice.

From 3-7, it's short range for all weapons.
From 9-14, it's medium range for all weapons.

To top it off, it's 3089 BV with a 3/4 pilot. For a Clan assault mech, that can do 40 odd damage out to 21 hexes, that is really nice.

Easily heat up on 22 heat on 26 heat dissipation? No, that just isn't going to work.

That's how it usually is. People sit around on the channel without playing. Or maybe it somehow fails to log people out when they close Hamachi or something... ah, well.

It's full because when someone disconnects, it doesn't automatically boot them from the network. It just shows that they're disconnected. In order for there to be enough space for everyone, I have to manually evict people off the network to make room, and it's a pain in the ass. I'm not always around 24/7 to make sure there's room.

There's a hard limit of 15 people for the free version of hamachi, hence the creation of the "Traditional Games" network in case the first one is full.

Anyways, hamachi is only necessary if the host is using a router. Megamek otherwise works fine if the host is connected through just his modem.

I like torso mounted cockpits only for the reason that in some of the bigger mechs, a Clan PPC, ER Large Laser, or a Gauss Rifle round doesn't mean auto death. Yeah, I run the chance of getting golden BB to the head... but the added strength of up to 40+ pts of armor and tons of internals between me and the bullets out to kill me feels so much better than having a mere 9 and 3 internals. Hell, even on non-assaults... it is something secure in the feeling. Really, anything to reduce the head chopper effect is okay with me.

It and the dual cockpit are always interesting and fun to toy with.

Commando Quest? I think it collapsed under it's own weight. MechCommander was having hard time coming up with material off the seat of his pants, while the threads kept slipping to page 15 and beyond. I think the last one fell through without archiving, and after that there hasn't been a peep.

Smaller scenarios could be workable, I think, but campaigns are hard. I enjoyed both immensely, though.

as opposed to killing the mech by wasting the engine, or crippling it with gyro-hits? Torso mounted cockpits are just as vulnerable as these vital components, and significantly more secure than head-mounted cockpits which can be easily pulped by a well lucky Gauss rifle or well-aimed Death from Above. Coupled with Reinforced Internals and Hardened Armor, they're as secure as a mechwarrior can be on the battlefield.

Due to popular demand, Delta Technologies is now releasing one of its proprietary designs to the public. Formerly used exclusively as security for our factories and occasionally licensed to reputable and loyal mercenaries protecting Delta interests, the Shiv is now yours for 22,935,815 C-Bills. This fast medium mech weighs in at 55 tons, yet its XL330 engine propels it along at a swift run, made swifter by the combination of Triple Strength Myomer and Supercharger installed in its center torso. A pair of jump jets round out the Shiv's movement suite and virtually guarantee a swift close with any enemy. In addition to making the battlefield a smaller place, the Shiv also makes it a far more dangerous place. A pair of light PPCs grant it medium-range firepower to challenge its targets as it closes, but the Battlemech Lance provides a killing blow that makes the immediate area around the Shiv a No-Man's-Land that any mechwarrior would think twice before entering. A pair of ER-Flamers round out the Shiv's arsenal, granting short-range firepower and infantry-control to this fearsome mech. All the savage firepower in the world is meaningless if it cannot be brought to bear against a foe, and to that end the Shiv is equipped with nine and a half tons of light Ferro-Fibrous Armor, and a Void Signature system. That's right, this fearsome phantom is difficult to shoot and harder to hurt. But please don't think the Shiv is all about independently taking on every foe by itself. On the modern battlefield, nobody fights alone. The addition of a TAG system in the Shiv's head allows it to summon in artillery fire from allied units. Whether besieging a city or defending the same, the Shiv has the speed, power, and tactical capabilities to ensure victory. Every crook and hoodlum knows that in the back alleys and mean streets, everyone needs a Shiv. Now, you can have one too.
