In America, and in strongly american-influenced countries (when it comes to nerd media) such as england and ireland, tabletop gaming is the standard and LARPing is extreme nerdery. But in Europe, LARPing is more normal, and often tabletop gaming is actually considered worse!

I think it has something to do with the increased prevalence of medieval festivals over history, making it more acceptable in the public eye (it's educational!), combined with the increased availability of attractive people who are willing to do it.
