A modern city is shunted off to Faerun. It doesn't matter which city, American, Canadian, British, Russian, ect.

How long would it take for a pandemic plague to spread across the continent due to the differences in viral and bacterial immunities? What may be a simple day to day experience such as the common cold to herpes to us be an untreatable nightmare, spreading faster then clerics can treat it.
    >> Anonymous 03/21/11(Mon)02:46 No.14312980
Not as quickly as you might think. The sheer volume of other races emans that their immune systems HAVE to be stronger to resist varieties of biological infections that have so many varieties of incubators to deal with. If anything, the chances are good that the city folk will be whiped out by strains of alien diseases that developed from elves, orcs, and dwarves.

I'd be more worried about the modern city starving to death. Most cities have only 2-3 days supply of food for their population. No power, limited gasoline, and very little possibility of transport past where the asphalt runs out. Not many skilled farmers, what few there are have no experience with medieval dirt-farming, and no way even fucking Waterdeep would have enough surplus food to feed several million people.
    >> Anonymous 03/21/11(Mon)02:55 No.14313089
The matter in our cosmos is different from the matter in their cosmos. Sure, your simply molecules will work together, and we could probably breathe their air, but it would take a long time for something as complex as viruses to work.

    >How long would it take for a pandemic plague to spread across the continent due to the differences in viral and bacterial immunities?

This is like thinking that if we found alien life on Mars, it'd be dangerous to us because who knows what alien virus would kill everyone.

Sorry, but pathogens and your immune system don't work that way. Even assuming some opportunistic pathogen gets into you, it's not like your body goes "oh shit I've never seen this before, I'm just going to ignore it".

Your body is vicious, anything that isn't clearly a part of you is going to get raped by your immune system - and more importantly, any alien pathogen isn't going to have evolved to infect you or deal with your immune system. It's no good for an alien microbe to get into you if it can't even find food and survive, let alone avoid your immune response.

This is precisely the reason why interspecies infectious diseases are so uncommon. These pathogens evolve themselves into a niche, and they cannot easily attack other hosts that they aren't evolved to deal with.

You gonna get 80% to 90% of the population to go from burger-flippers, cab drivers, and accountants to peasants? Not likely. You gonna get the people running that clusterfuck to actually listen to the locals, so they can actually learn medieval agriculture? Doubt it. You gonna find enough unclaimed land to support a few million new people within a few weeks travel of wherever the city appeared? Maybe, but don't count on it.

Shit would be cash if they went to Dragonlance and arrived near Mt. Nevermind.

The gnomes would never get enough of them.

Eberon would probably be an easier transition too; magitech from techno-tech should be easily enough done.

But Faerun? They might manage to get out of town and to a more operable civlized area, but over all the local populus is looking at a 50% decrease inside the first week, and that's optimistic unless some one like Elminster or such steps in and magics the problem away.

pathogens in the developed world, thanks to antibiotics and natural selection, tend to expend a greater proportion of metabolic energy on their resistances, which makes them vulnerable to the host's natural immune systems. Diseases today wouldn't be a great calamity to a medieval society that generally needs to deal with more sicknesses.

Personally, I'd be more worried about magical diseases infecting the modern-day people, since they'd have no ability to defend against them.

It works both ways. By that reasoning, the diseases would also have 0 natural ability so survive in a faerûnian (faerûnite?), simply due to the physiological differences. As another anon pointed out, pathogens can't just infect people willy-nilly, they have to specifically evolve for it.

So wrong, the sheer rate that pathogens mutate/reproduce means resistance genes will disappear along with the metabolic strain of production if their is no selection pressure. Where did you get the idea that pathogen resistance causes better visibility to the immune system, that's not necessarily so bro.

The only way past that will be magic, and you know once we see the first spell go off some dumbass is going to start shooting (Since it's not like they could tell us what they're casting until after it goes off). Now it's the "mysterious city that dropped out of the sky" and is full of humans in strange clothes speaking a strange language and with strange weapons that appear to be handheld magic cannons of some sort.

The people saying the city becomes an adventurer magnet are right, and once the first hostile wizards show up it's game over. Almost no one ever says, "first, we get everyone together to check for wounded, clear debris so people can travel to provide help, check for wounded, and survey our collective skills and assets." Even the cheap post-apocalypse-inspire reality shows like "survivorman" stress keeping the fuck away from other people, whom you know nothing about but almost assuredly have developed a desire to rape you and eat you. Nobody considers strength through community, and that kind of worries me that community is what gets humanity through all the _real_ disasters every other week.

Old testament: thousands of years of establishing a race, purging the race once it falls into idolatry, establishing a Chosen People when the race AGAIN falls into idolatry, leading the chosen race out of "bondage" (which some archaeologists was just a military treaty with a mightier that the Hebrews got sick of dealing with), establishing a Holy Land (by slaughtering all the people who already lived there), purging the Chosen People of the Holy Land after they fell again, and miscellaneous prophecies.

New Testament: 60 years tops of Jesus ministering, apostles taking up the cause after, and only occasional maulings, stonings, blindings, and so on.

    >American culture is fucking PARANOID. Why do you think zombie films, a genre about survivalists having a reason to hate, run from, and kill their neighbors, is so popular?
It's actually the reverse. Almost all monster movies involved heroes rallying the community to action, or teh army saving the day to protect grateful citizens. Until the zombie movie, in which the monsters were us, they didn't just kill, them recruited, and the living humans were still a greater threat. At the time, it was a new
vein. Now it's tapped out. The nature-based and alien-based cataclysm movies still tend towards pro-community messages, but the zombie flick is unique in that it's a more "quiet cataclysm." That is, a disaster in which every physical thing man would want remains intact to be used by survivors. Buildings, guns, cars. Anything you can claim while running from the dead is yours. That's a lot more convenient for these sort of discussions than "what's your plan when the air outside your house is too radioactive to breath" or "what do you do when meteors destroy your city."

Ok, the people end up there. Iehova/Yahweh comes into existence, since between Jews, Chrstians, and Muslims, it's all the same god.

He/It gives mana from heaven to the people, providing them with food to help last until they get set up.

He sends one guy a vision and sends him to a city nearby that has a farming community. Prophet tells them that their god demands that the people there leave and give them the land. They refuse, and Yahweh sends some plagues after them. Repeat a few times until they have some new land.

People of the land figure these newcomers are dicks and decide to take them out. War occurs. Some locals see the power that Yahweh has and what his paladins and clerics can do, turn to the new church.

Overall, the people have a bloody entrance, and for several decades, fight a continuing war for survival until they're too well entrenched to be forced out. A lot of people will die, but their numbers will be reinforced somewhat by locals.

Except they didn't. There was relatively little shooting (less than a day in un-destroyed NO, actually), and tales of mass hysteria were mostly (reprehensible) reporters pushing the notion that "surely there is mass hysteria". Drowing is to be expected when your city goes underwater. But starving, angry people didn't start until after more than a day of no supplies, because the state authorities dragged their feet, and FEMA is incompetent.

As a side note, I find it odd that American values stress so much the limited role of the military, so that things like coups are much less likely... and yet the military is usually the only government body capable of actually doing anything, because they're the ones who do it all the time in other people's countries where we don't worry about losing control of our own people.

    >"Oh my gods! They're all a little bit evil, but also a little bit good. I DONT KNOW WHAT I AM DOING HERE!"
One of the best contributions ever to the alignment system was a brief write up (I think for Eberron) in which a Paladin uses detect evil on the guy serving him a drink.

"What do you do, barkeep? Water down the drinks? Charge a few extra coppers to the men too drunk to count? Or do you covet something of your neighbors?"
    "I- I mean..."
"No, nevermind. I don't need to know. Repent your ways. It is not too late for you."
And with that, the paladin leaves the bar

Why the best thing for the alignment system?
    1) There's such a thing as "a little evil"
    2) Yes, a little evil, detects as "evil"
    3) a paladin can distinguish between a little evil and pure EVIL.
    4) perfectly nice, ordinary people can still be evil (and good) without being very near extremes
    5) A paladin doesn't just kill everything that detects as evil, because that would be insane (and evil)

Nobody's arguing that everyone in the city would immediately say "OH GOD I CAN'T HANDLE THE WILD" and keel over. But consider a few things:
A city of 1 million people requires 5000 square kilometers of farmland to support them. Foraging in the wild yields a lot less food than that. This means that, before too long, most people would have to trek 50 kilometers or more just to feed themselves, and stores keep maybe 5 days of food on hand, tops. 30% or so of americans are obese, and I suspect a similar proportion are not fit enough to walk 10 kilometers in a day. This means people are going to starve. En masse. Then of course there are the monsters; in the long term those are probably not going to be a problem given human's history with monsters, but not everyone is going to survive there. Then there are the people who absolutely depend on modern society: the elderly, the diabetics, people on life support; this isn't a great number, granted, but it is significant. If you add those all together, you'd end up with 10-50% dead.

Try to pay attention to the line of argument. It isn't that conflict breaks out due to lack of language, it's that conflict breaks out due to introduction of something that's going to scare the shit out of a lot of people (spellcasting) when many of those people will be armed and there is no possible way to communicate what is about to happen.

Also, learning a new language takes time. All of the "plans" here seem to believe that these people are going to somehow find the time to pull all of this off before running into serious problems. This is Faerun, a place where monsters that can easily plow through a crowd of commoners and experts are just wandering around in the wild. There are so many opportunities for a negative encounter when dealing with this many people and an area this large (Plus the surrounding area, since they do need to go out and look for things).

that's a really complicated question. 'Enough' would be the right answer.

Not even counting military grade weapons, a KPV has enough energy to punch through a sloped armored hull from a kilometer, and pumps out 550 rounds per minute.

Pic kinda related - that's the result of a much smaller .50 BMG detonating, and thus directing much less energy to the victim.

Exactly, I have a vision in my mind of an aspie neckbeard god freaking shit when modern guns come in to the picture and when someone gets shot they just bleed out and die in short order. That when they are shot in the head... they just die.. no hp... no anything... their organs get shredded by hollow point ammunition and they just die....

I mean really, plate armor.... real plate armor is what D&D is supposed to be based off of and a standard modern 9mm round will punch through it and not even slow down noticeably.

Yeah we can bring in magic and all that sure... but also think about modern battle doctrine compared to medieval/fantasy. Assuming that there is a military base anywhere within city limits, we might not be the dominant power... but we would be a force to be reckoned with. Even a single artillery piece would be like god's pinki finger death comes and you never get to know from whom, from where, or why.

Also Librarys... university library's, assuming we don't get overrun within a week we'll have all the info we need to get back on our feet.

Lastly most D&D setting have something of the idea tha a god is more powerful from the amount of worshipers he has and the worshipers impression of their god. Even just take the Abrahamic religions, god isn't a powerful god, god is God, the only one, the alpha and the omega, etc... Waterdeep... 130,000 people... plus other cities, and with all of them split between a plethora of other dieties. Grab a 3 million city where a vast majority of them worship a single god... and throw them in a desperate situation (i.e. the kind of situation where people "find god" in their time of need) and I think Faerun would be developing a problem with pillars of salt showing up all over the place.

Modern rounds travel so much faster than antiquated rounds it really isn't a competition. Modern ballistic armors are designed slow the round down and cause it to mushroom and disperse the force metal armor is designed to deflect and stop impacts.

Couldn't find 9mm conveniently but this is .223 through 1/4" steel plate, most armor would be 1/8" at most, it would just be too damn heavy otherwise.

This. Slow, weak rounds are easy to catch with metal plates.

Hence why metal armour was used up to WW2 ( where Soviet commandos used metal armour for raiding German command posts. Since German officers usually just carried pistols.)

    >I don't think standard 9mm would go through plate (at least more advanced plates).
Russian overpressure 9mm rounds can go through an engine block and THEN defeat Class II body armor. Standard 9mm doesn't care much about thin layers of steel either, the best you'll accomplish is that you'll be hit with an already torn/fragmenting bullet, which means a much nastier wound. Still, ballistics are very complicated, and a lot depends on the round itself.

    >I mean, isn't a type of bulletproof vest basically plate on your abdomen inside cloth?
The plate is either titanium or ceramic, and it's there to slow the projectile and make it change mediums through which it travels. And it's not inside cloth - it's inside many layers of kevlar. A ceramic trauma plate is 12-13mm thick, plate in its thickest point is about 3mm.

True, not going to deny that, what I'm saying is though that the bast idea of what +8 ac amounts to is completely worthless compared to modern tech. Quite frankly I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that a M1 Abrams probably has a higher raw AC than an elder dragon. And that a SABOT round can still punch right through with a good hit.

...Wait... what about us nerds? Wouldn't we have fucking TOMES that describe everything in their world? Just carry the Monster Manuals everywhere and I'm sure you could survive rather well in the Realms.

I've been thinking about this from a different angle. Take a random city from the Northern States. Not a big one, but any state that has severe snow fall. Lets got with a simple one, someplace like Buffalo. Buffalo is way too big and would have massive problems. Now, lets go a hundred miles or so to it's east and find Oswego. Tiny city, has a huge port on Lake Ontario. A city this size has a pretty HIGH chance of survival, despite being in AMERIKUH, as most of its inhabitants are hunters of some sort. Camping is a pretty big thing there, as there's pretty much forests all around the city. Not only do they know how to camp, they have to deal with crazy snow in the winter. The fact that this isn't a huge city means that its sense of community would actually factor in. I imagine any city like this to turn into a hunting tribe of some sort/ have a whole bunch of people who turn into Rangers. Rangers with hunting rifles.

Oh, another thing I wanted to mention was that the average human (ie, not obese) can live without food for a ridiculous amount of time. Like, upwards of a week with minimal food. Water on the other hand is what will kill you. That amount of people would NEED water supplies. If you have water, but no food, you have a few days before you're REALLY in trouble. You may wish you were dead, but you'll still live. Just remember, pets are a great emergency food source!

TLDR; Small city could probably appear in Faerun without murdering itself to survive, but shit would still hit the fan.

Answering the OP's question. I don't think it'll be a problem, as once someone learns to become a paladin, he'll be immune to diseases. Once the city wills Yahweh into existance, crazy religious fanatics become paladins/clerics. They heal themselves/their flock as it grows exponentially as people migrate to the non-dieing group.

...As for Faerun, I assume all the other gods have paladins/clerics that will take care of the most of any virus/sickness with magic. Sure some people would die, but it's nothing worse than a warband of orcs would cause.

Dude, a proper hit from an axe is just as damaging, if not more. The deal is our modern weapons were to be shunted off into faerun or any other D&D setting then we'd have barbarians shrugging off those just like they shrug off other things that would kill a normal man in one hit.

Hence the reason why I always insisted on HP being a measure of fatigue, stress, and plot armor and when it goes down enough you take that one hit that kills you. Also makes healing surges and the like make more sense too.

The difference is that unlike your axe our modern firearms don't do HP damage, they pretty much do 1d50 con damage. They don't make you feel tired when they hit you, and you don't get to parry them away, they go inside you and tear things apart. Also they more or less completely ignore armor, every attack is a touch attack. Also they always have a bleed status effect combined with neutralization of whatever location they hit.

Ok, gun people, look. There are two choices:

    1) HP represents actual health, damage represents actual damage. You can shoot a high level human multiple times in the face and they're still going to be totally alright in terms of being able to keep running at full speed and attacking like crazy.

    2) HP represents fatigue and minor scratches. You can shoot all you want at a high level character but your bullets are simply going to miss a supernatural number of times before that actual hit lands (Or those that do hit will only chip armor or clip an ear), for whatever reason.

Pick one. You cannot have the choice you all seem to rely on, which is that you can expect to land a timely shot and it's going to shut them down fast. Welcome to Faerun.

Or... we can consider the fact that modern weapons are better than medieval ones... The skill involved in making a 100 yard shot with a bow and hitting a 3" circle is near impossible for anyone short of an absolute master archer. I can take my rifle and do it over and over and over all day long.
Science creates handicaps that artificially make people much more capable than they otherwise would be, that is what technology does. Think of it like an AK47 = a +50 +50repeating crossbow with heavily enchanted bolts.

I may be a lvl 3 reservist or whatever the fuck class you want to design, but I'm holding the equivalent of an epic beyond epic item and as long as I know how to operate it; it levels the playing field.

And yet you are unable to accept that something in the makeup/background of this universe makes projectile weaponry less effective. IN A SETTING WHERE "A wizard did it" IS THE EXPLANATION FOR HALF OF FUCKING EVERYTHING EVER, AND MOST OF THE REST IS "A god did it."

The roll vs. ac represents my skill with the weapon vs. your skill at defending yourself. If I'm using a +5 bow it gets 5 units easier for me to hit you. Guns just happen to have a lot of pluses you know all that stuff about sights, dependable ballistics, ergonomic designs, and the fact that the projectile travels faster than the human eye can register.
It won't aim itself, but a lot of the challenges that say an archer might have are eliminated via technology.

Dude all this weaponry you guys are talking just exists. Heck a single PC can survive a dragon breathing a huge cone of fire/acid/cold blasted into him. They fight Tarrasques that can do attaks with much more force than a lot of heavy weaponry and all kinds of magic shit like meteor shower (shit meteors make CRATERS when they hit they ground), disintegrate and a whatnot.

I can't see how a shotgun is less powerful than say, Melf's Minute Meteor.

Technically haven't populations from Earth already popped into Faerun before? I seem to remember some of the pseudo Egyptian societies in the setting were actually magicked there from Earth several thousand years ago.

For fucks sake, we've been over this. If hitting someone with a greatsword doesn't do any significant damage why would you expect a bullet to follow more realistic rules? That means that clearly HP doesn't represent attacks hitting, but the target getting tired out from parrying and dodging until you finally land a killing blow.

So clearly high level characters in this world are supremely gifted in the art of dodging, therefore it makes sense (by Faerun logic) that they will be dodging most of those bullets.

Deal with it, or propose an alternative other than stating the obvious "durr but guns are like crazy better than swords." We know that guns fuck shit up, that isn't in question.

They were distroyed during the spellplague events. Their country was also taken by the returned Imaskari (pseudo-Mayan magocracy?) and is not called "High Imaskari".

And these egiptian were brought to Faerun as slaves by the same Imaskari, but in ancient times when they were a lot more powerful and kinda evil. High Imaskar is quite ok now and forbids slavery.

Using logic is not the right idea here. Embrace the madness, release the clerics and paladins of Jesus and cience, turn the chemists into transmutation mages, soldiers into warriors and fuck those tanks and jets that consume fuel... CAPTURE WYVERNS!

Amusing bit to consider. An intermediate deity has hundreds of thousands of worshipers, a greater may have millions. Lets say this is an American city with a population of just a million. Just going by statistics, the Christian/Islamic/Jewish God just popped up as an intermediate deity.

An alchemical substance called 'smokepowder', however, does work, and has the same properties as gunpowder. Not that that'll help when one of the millions of citizens rolls a random encounter with some fucking giants or something.

Gunpowder Does Not Work. Neither does a lot of other technological devices.

Maybe it's the intense magical field that envelops and permeats D&D worlds.

It's just how it is, and why there will never be an industrial revolution not based on magic devices.

No, Smokepowder works because of magic. It's not a chemical thing.

The Lantanese made, and have had, bombards. They're ridiculously unreliable, and they use a magical substance that's a lot like gunpowder. All the gunpowder and electronics in Teleport City still won't work.

No. It's fueled by magic. Trust me. It's been written out in detail in the FR sourcebooks. Technology the way we understand it just Does Not Work in most D&D worlds.

Here's the question in my mind... the soil of the city itself... that specific place is still from our earth... What if the rules are still ours there and theirs everywhere else. Magic does not exist within our city. We would have an independant city state with force enough to hold back nearly any number of attackers without their magic while still able to produce basic technology and learn about the outer world, and from there produce and arm allies.

If it was a larger portion of land (say a continent), that could make for some interesting shit. Unfortunately a city runs out of ammo within a week and is fucked over by the next band o' beasties (ignoring the starvation/anarchy before that). An army of nominally equipped orcs vs a city of commoners with sticks at that point.
