What are some simple, fun (see: not game breaking) items I can give my players early on?

    Fantasy setting.

Stuff like a coil of rope that never wears down, a lantern that requires no oil, etc.

Pic unrelated. I am sparse on /tg/ images.

I've been pondering this same thing. There are very few things you can give a player that they won't find a way to break (portable hole/bag of holding arrows, for instance)

However, there are really standard needs that you can satiate. Stuff like magic torches that never burn out. A bag of rations that always makes enough food for the group. A large bottle that purifies any water or drink put into it. A portable cabin or shelter that conveniently folds into a super light and easy to transport box (Dragon Ball capsule style)

Stuff like that is always awesome.

For the mirrors, remove your downside, and have it so each one has a openable lid. The one that's open first will show a black screen, while the second one opened will show whatever is reflected off the first one. A circlet which generates a cloth cowl (A cowl will form within the circlet given space.)

Anyone who wears the cowl will *record* 5 (maybe 7) minutes of either: Thoughts, Images or Sounds; the cowl will dissipate afterwards. The cowl-user will promptly forget what transpired until the stored memory is used up.

Putting on the circlet will allow the wearer to experience the 5 minutes of memories, although he won't have access to the stored sense while doing so. The memory is stored as long as no new cowl is formed (or maybe it dissapears after one use, whatever you'd like.)

Any item that creates an infinite amount of anything what so ever will result in PCs breaking the local economy if they're clever enough.

A friend of mine once told me the story of how his old group derailed a game with a magical fish hat. Every time someone took the hat from their head, it left a fresh fish there, effectively giving them a never ending supply of fish.
The party used it to start a fish stall and sold the fish for a third of the normal price for fish. They then built a commercial empire by investing the money earned.
Perhaps the players exploited the economy-major GM who insisted on running a realistic world and diligently stuck with his free trade capitalism in a fantasy setting, but the threat of 'infinite X spawning items' to the stability of any GMs campaign is obvious...

Don't know if these fit absolutely all the critieria, but these are mostly low powered.

An ioun stone with absolutely no benefits other than the normal ioun stone ability to be set swirling in orbit around someone's head.

An enchanted bell that, if strung between two objects, will ring whenever something passes beneath it. Great alarm.

Whistling arrows/bolts/throwing weapons. Give off a shrill whistling shriek as they fly through the air. Obvious use would be as a signal, or drawing attention.

A silver axehead that purifies water. In drinkable water it will float. In non-potable or poisoned water it will sink. If left in the water for an hour, the silver on the axehead will tarnish but the water will be purified. The tarnish must be removed before.
If strapped to a haft and the wielder speaks the true name of the weapon it becomes a +1 silver axe, +3 vs. water elementals/oozes.

If the music box is fully wound and the song is allowed to play through, any creature capable of hearing the song (not deaf, no earplugs, etc.) will be fascinated by it for the duration of the song, which is approximately 2 minutes.

    Other great items include consumables:

-An actually working magical love potion. The effect wears off after twenty-four hours, but the imbiber will be able to recall everything experienced during that period.

-Potion of Stat Tradeoff (provide appropriate name). Boosts one attribute at the cost of two other attributes.

-A cursed mirror, which, if shattered, calls down minor bad luck for seven days on the breaker.

-A tiny heart exquisitely crafted from clay. When placed on the tongue, it will dissolve and the imbiber will instantly have all his wounds clot and stop bleeding. (what this actually means in health terms is up to the GM)

-A copper ring that, upon speaking the appropriate command phrase, expands to a copper hoop two feet in diameter. This transformation is one-way only.

-A finely wrought silver ladder in miniature. Speaking the appropriate command word will make the ladder expand to full size. This transformation is one-way only.

-A rune-inscribed viper's fang. When fitted to a tooth, the user's canines will turn into poisonous viper's fangs for the next hour (the user is immune to his own poison). The fang is single use only.

-A glass eye that temporarily replaces one of the user's own and increases the sight range of the user by 10% for one hour.

Kitten statue of Cocoa. Kitten statue crafted from pewter or some cheap rock or something. The cat has huge eyes and an human like smile about it. If you stroke its head it makes a purring noise, and if you tap its head twice it begins meowing like so:
    "Mew Mew Mew
    [pause]
    Mew Mew Mew"
Infinitely until it is tapped twice more. *Special* Whom so ever breaks this statue is cursed by Cocoa the cat god. They have what can only be called bad luck, and get -2 to all skill checks until the curse is removed.

It will always roll towards an option that would give a result of 'weal', even if this would be uphill. If there are no 'weal' options, it rolls away from 'woe' options.

OP you want an item that is extremely cool, powerful and useful at all levels, but requires a skilled hand to use it? I have an item for you!

    The Demon Bell.

At first glance this seems to be nothing more than an ordinary hand bell with odd runic markings on it and a demon head for the inner part of the bell. Once used however a Balor is summoned from hell! For one purpose. To open a jar. That is right. The only thing the demon can do is open a jar. It doesn't seem like much, but trust me it is a really powerful item.

This can only be used once per day.

Another good idea for low level items are ones with a random number of charges.

A string of beads made from a material that looks like crystallized amber (or alternately, sunstones).
Removing a single bead causes it to flare with a bright light for a single minute. If multiple beads are removed simultaneously (keeping them together on the string), the light will burn for a number of minutes equivalent to the number of beads removed.
The bead necklace can also be forcibly hurled at a target, it which case all the remaining beads will erupt in a bright flash, the intensity of which is based on the number of beads remaining.

Each sunstone necklace found contains 4+1d10 beads.

    A chalice with d4 gems encrusted in it. Roll a d3 for each gem - 1= ruby, 2=sapphire, 3=emerald.
When water is poured into the chalice, one of the gems from the chalice can be removed to release its magical effect. The gem will instantly turn to dust (the gems cannot be removed in any other way). The effects are as follows:

Ruby = turns the water in the chalice into holy water
Sapphire = turns the water into a cure light wounds potion
Emerald = turns the water into an antidote for all poisons

Removing the fluid from the chalice will cause a reversion back to ordinary water (ie you can't bottle it and save it, you must use it from the chalice). The chalice comes with no cover, so the fluid can spill.

An enchanted incense burner that comes with d3+1 sticks of incense. By burning a stick of incense in the burner and concentrating for one minute, the character may make a single Turn Undead check as a cleric of equivalent level, though the meditating character does not need to use this ability immediately. (he may, for example, lift and carry the incense burner around, then use the Turn Undead attempt when he actually encounters undead).
Each stick of incense burns for 10 minutes. (if the character has not meditated or expended his single Turn Undead attempt in this time, then it is lost).

Limited charge items like this can scale very well. You can award them to characters early on and then control it's potency by the availability of the charges and their price. You can easily use them as a gold sink as well; players definitely will find them more interesting items to spend gold on than mundane equipment.

For example, you might find additional charges that do different or more potent effects, with a commensurate increase in gp price to either obtain or install.

A magical box with a lens built to peer inside it. If you look inside, you'll see a beautiful person of the opposite gender of your species bellydancing.
What they don't know is that breaking the box results in freeing a one-wish genie with the usual wish limitations. That genie would take the form of the last beautiful person and go to (insert major city here) to become a bard when it has fulfilled a wish, however small that would be.

A small gold coin which mysteriously attracts lint whenever it's stored in clothing or cloth items of some kind.

A beautiful golden necklace which, when worn, temporarily phases a person's underwear. If they're not wearing underwear, the innermost clothing that shields their privates is phased instead.

I dare ya, /tg/, to make use of those three items. Can you break the game with them?

If it's just run of the mill items I would suggest things like:

    * A magic bauble that emits soft, far-reaching light on a certain event trigger. Nice to have when spelunking.
    * Small, sealed bottles that upon breaking the seal will provide a magical bubble of breathable air for 3 minutes.
    * A faggot of sticks no longer than 10 cm that if used together to make fire, will be able sustain the fire for three days.
    * Charms of Warding that create a spherical zone around the ward that stops precipitation such as rain or snow but nothing else.
    * Enchanted Armor & Weapon Oils that ward against blood and water as well as keeping the edge and strength of the item it's applied on.

One ornate Fabrege Egg, 3" tall, with 3 legs in a tripod arangement bringing the total height up to 4 inches.

The egg opens on a hinge at it's widest point, and when a precious metal is inserted inside and the egg closed, a 1.5 inch tall copy of the egg's user in the clothing and equipment they are using will be created from it. It is completely obedient to the creator, will follow simple orders and cooperate with copies made of a different metal by the same person, although it cannot speak or read, and can only lift twice it's weight (Determined by the weight of the metal used to create it). Metal copies will crumble to dust if they ever touch the same metal they were made from or if they or the egg is destroyed or enters an antimagic field.

Opon closer inspection, the metal copy is extremely detailed and it's movement very realistic, completely accurate while not being acted upon by outside forces. for the purposes of damage, they are effectively destroyed if they are deformed, melted or cut in such a way that they lose the image of their creator or can no longer move in a way that their creator is capable of moving.
