    'sup /tg/?

So what will it be tonight. Skaven Warlord or an Iron Warriors lord? I know some of the regulars to my threads asked for no marines, but I thought an exception could be made for a chaos marine conversion.
    >> Anonymous 04/25/11(Mon)00:35 No.14711748
Iron Warriors. I've been wanting to paint some for a little while, but with all my paints at home, I'll settle for seeing someone else do it.

    Iron Warriors it is!

First up let's have a look at the model. The best thing you can do before starting work on a model, apart from cleaning and assembly and stuff, is actually have a good detailed look at the whole and try to get an image for what you want it to look like at the end.

The base model is Huron Blackheart. I've painted him before and it's a very nice model, and the mass of cybernetics inspired me to turn the spare into an Iron Warrior. He was originally just going to be a random sergeant, but he just came together so well I decided he would be my Chaos Lord until I get around to doing Daemon Princes.

Both arms are from the plastic Chaos Space Marine kit, the left shoulder is from the Possessed kit and the right shoulder from the Iron Warriors shoulder sprue. Backpack is from an older Chaos Lord model, and largely just there to make him look less like Huron (I also like the twin-pole).

Base is some wire from a USB cable to make pipes, some dirt and 2 pieces of brass etch on a small rock to add height. The razorwire is from Secret Weapon and is very nice (I prefer the style of this compared to the 2-curled-wires of GW wire) and the metal he's standing on is from the 40k basing kit.
    >> Anonymous 04/25/11(Mon)01:00 No.14711982
This is cool. I was going to vote Skaven because I'd be interested in how all that fur would come out, but I play Iron Warriors, so this is good too.

Question: What Iron Warriors shoulder sprue had plastic shoulders? Is it from Forge World? Curious because the GW ones that I've seen have always been metal.

Sprue may have been a poor choice of word, it's a blister of metal shoulders with the Iron Warriors icon, haha.

If time permits, may do the Skaven after, or tomorrow, or the day after. Australia is enjoying a 5-6 day weekend at the moment.

Mithril Silver basecoat, with a tiny drop of Hawk Turquoise into the mix to tint it just that little bit. The GW style of doing metals seems to be starting dark and working your way up, but I find that starting bright and a series of washes and glazes tends to give a lot more control over colour and look that little bit more natural. I've been trying to teach myself TMM (doing NMM techniques with metal paints), but it's a slow challenge.
    >> Anonymous 04/25/11(Mon)01:17 No.14712155
Cool, TPG thread with Iron warriors. I've always hated doing metallics for some reason, it'll be cool to see what techniques you use for what's pretty much an all metallics scheme.

What do you mean by TMM? Like fairly extreme shading gradients but done with metallics?

Ahh. Okay, I can tell that it's metal better in that picture. In the earlier picture it all looked like the same material.

Forgot to mention, when I started painting my Iron Warriors I wanted them darker then normal, aged or something. So I went with the black basecoat and drybrushed Tin Bitz onto the trim pieces. My friend did a couple of my models and he went with Burnished Gold and then put a Gryphon Sepia wash over it. His technique came out very nicely. I thought the gold would be too blinging, but that wash really brought things down to a good level.

I stay away from washes because I tried using them when I was 12 or so and fucked everything up royally. lol He's got me rethinking them.

I know that feel bro. When I first started with the hobby GW didn't have washes, only inks, and the inks were absolute shit. So when they put out the washes recently, at first I thought 'fuck that' because of how shitty the inks were, but I gave them a try and I found out the washes are a fucking godsend for doing quick metallics.

Left and mid are normal shots, right is there with the light closer to the model to show the reflection post-wash.

I made up a wash of a bit of brown ink, a bit of flesh ink and shaded with a touch of Asurman Blue and Black Ink (I was using the blue to darken it without making it black, but it just wasn't going as dark as I wanted).

I like to use inks on metallics as they tend to keep the polish and shine much better than the washes GW makes at the moment. Washes themselves are wonderful things, but as I've said in both previous theads, there are tools and there are techniques, and the best painters are those that try everything.

You may be able to see that I've focused the wash on the lower right pieces, as I want a light source of above and slightly to the right (also, that's where my lamp is).

All in all, it came out far more brown then I was intending, but we can work with this. Once it's dry, I'm actually going to go back over with Mithril Silver and re-enforce the light source and highlights before any further shading or blending.

    >>14712155
Technically, there are 2 techniques for metal painting. TMM and NMM. Most companies will encourage metal paint, wash or glaze, highlight and call it a day. This is TMM, but at the very basic form. NMM I'm not very fond of (it can be excellent, but I simply love the look of true metals more), but I study the technique when I can to help learn the lighting for improving my metals. Had I started with Boltgun, there would be a TON less shine then I have already.

As for the previous image, well, that was just primed grey (black, then dusted white, as I do 90% of my models these days).

    IRON WITHIN IRON WITHOUT!

    >>14712223
They both sound like pretty cool techniques and results. Would you have pictures on hand that we can have a look at? Sepia is one of my favorite wash colours (favorite colour hands-down is Hawk Turquoise, Scorpion Green coming in second).

I don't have any pics of the models on hand except for this one for now. I spend more time on my characters so for this one I didn't focus on getting the color to the edges of the trim. Just wanted to crank out numbers. :P

The color of the skull was done by starting with leather and working up to Bleached Bone in about 4 stages with just the slightest touches of skull white on the studs. The rest of the model is Boltgun Metal over black so it's not really as bright as it looks here, and the weapons are Shadow Grey dry brushed on the black. I wanted them to have an archaic stone look for some reason.

I do a LOT of dry brushing. Also, I have a camera that takes macro pics now, so I'll take some photos of my minis later this week and post them up for you to see better examples.

That's still quite nice man, a the extra red in the gold parts push it a little towards bronze, but I like that. I may try for similar since this guy is already proving to be pretty brown and weathered (who has time to clean your armor when it's an extension of your body and has served you unwavering for 10,000 years? I mean, if you had to constantly repair and clean it then you didn't build it right in the first place!)

Update coming shortly, been blending back and forth with silver and did some more shading.

Thanks for the compliments. That was kind of the way I was looking at it too plus the fact that these guys would probably look at their armor as mere tools whereas codex marines keep everything pristine as a symbol of what they represent.

I'm about to turn in for the night, but I'll check back tomorrow on how things went. I'm really interested because even from the priming your technique is so different from what my friends and I do.

Credit given where it's due man, I make these threads maybe only a little for attention, but mostly to give all those people who want to take a stab at painting but don't want to dive in the deep end something to read, look at how models appear from start to finish and try to encourage more painters to post their stuff on /tg/. Also, I just love to paint, and love to talk, so this suits me perfectly.

Armour had some mithril/turquoise blending again to pick out the light sources some more, had a tiny bit of the wash thrown into the shadows again to darken them some more (metal is always HARD transition from shadow to light, not soft blending like with skin or fabric or stuff). Started to pick out the dirt with Bestial Brown and the rusted metal on the base with Dark Flesh (going to need a few coats as my paint is pretty thin). Bone was picked out with Khemri Brown as I want to try something different from my normal Charadon style, and the skin saw 2 thinned coats of Tallarn to give a base flesh colour.

    >>14712631
I would love to do something like that man, but really I just made this guy with what I had on-hand for some fun. There's something cool about building and painting a model from start to finish in a single session like this.

Anybody have some thoughts on what I can paint the cloth as? I'm thinking of a blue with cream freehand, or cream with blue freehand, with the plasma coils and robot eye being blue as a spot colour to all the red and brown.

Blue on the plasma pistol coils would look cool, on the banner I'm not too sure how it would look with the rest of the traditional Iron warriors scheme, but I guess the only way to find out is to try.

Ok, flesh had a wash of thinned Dark Flesh, the base and bone portions all had a quick splash of brown ink and the gold was applied.

For the gold I took Mithril Silver (a bright base), mixed in a bit of Bestial Brown until it was a bronze colour and then some Shining Gold to give it that tiny bit of a yellow tint. It went on nicely, and I cleaned up any mistakes and re-enforced the shadows with thinned brown ink in small amounts.

I am feeling the temptation to make myself a Kill Team of Iron Warriors now, but I have the battleforce for Chaos with the legs assembled, I could put together a small force without much trouble...

I need to clean my desk so bad at the moment, the paint pots are just piling up around the models.

Tinted the shadows with a bit of scorched brown and dark flesh to trick the eye into thinking they were reflecting the earth, last blending of the highlighted metal areas to mithril and ice blue to trick the eye into thinking he's standing under a blue sky. Bone was raised up to bleached bone, then some white in the mix. I tried the flag as khaki and it looked terrible, so I just did it with the same skin as the lord himself, the skin was all then given a thinned scorched brown wash. Eye, gems and plasma were done turquoise, ice blue then space wolf grey, final dots in white. I stippled bestial brown then bestial mixed with orange onto the metal plate and barbed wire, I like the wire but I'm not 100% on the sheet of metal.

I still have a couple of details to pick out, like some flasks and bags on his belt, and then I'm going to weather him a little and apply a little gloss to the metal to make it really shine in the light.

    And....done!

Well that was surprisingly fun to paint, even if it got super quiet towards the end there. Red and Brown ink mixed and blown over the model, largely on the powerclaw (I know that technically the powerfield would stop any splatter from hitting it, but I just love bloodsoaked weapons). Thinned Water Effects on over the shinier armour pieces and all of the splatter, and gave the dirt a final wash of Devlan Mud, just for the hell of it (I'll probably go back and touch up the base later, there's something off about it).

I haven't had good results from painting them, and didn't feel the model needed them (or had much space for them). Were I to apply Chevrons to Iron Warriors, they would largely be to hazard zones on vehicles (ie. around moving parts of spiked pieces) or special weapons. Both would be used entirely for the fluff reason of allowing soldiers to easily see the more dangerous things on the battlefield, friendly side, and not get in the way of them.

It's what I always thought Chevrons were for, not for going on any flat surface.

Metal panels in seas of brown are the soapbox of choice for generals in the 41st millennium. But in all serious, it looks amazing and has inspired me to buy a model of anything and get painting, even if I probably won't find a game where I'll ever use it because of the general lack of interest in such things in my area.

Oh hey, this thread is still alive. I'm not doing anything until bed so lets see how far I can get with BONUS CONTENT: SKAVEN EDITION.

Metal is done identical to the Iron Warrior above, Mithril with a touch of Turquoise. Flesh is just Tallarn, all of the brown is Scorched Brown (the leather and the fur will be highlighted differently), the base is Charadon Granite and the fabric is a combination of Scorpion Green, Space Wolves Grey and Snot Green (I find it easiest to mix it in that order, or you could get too much snot in it).

The model is nice, but it's very love and hate at the moment. I love the more assassin or warrior themed Skaven, and picked this guy up for his awesome two-weapon-fighting style and nice armor, but now that I start to paint him notice the insane number of pustules and gut hanging out.
