That's what was so absolutely awesome about him. His AI wasn't just "hurr durr cold logic". And he didn't go "herpaderpa conflicting commands circuit overload" either. He just sat there pondering and came up with whatever he thought was most appropriate at the time. He even came up with his own creative addition to the plan at the end. He truly and honestly did care for Sam.

And again, Kevin Spacey. That alone is like, at least half the reason why GERTY is absolutely awesome.

GLaDOS isn't a mental clone. She's a software program who had a human mental upload in the mix. GLaDOS is no more Caroline than she is Wheatley or any of the Personality Cores; those were just things tacked on to try and guide/motivate her.

Remember that an AI isn't a human being; it has no drives or instincts that we don't give it. Their emotions are constructs created as a result of determining how closely they come to, or how far they fall from, the goals set for them by these installed drives. If you want to use Portal as an example, think about Wheatley's sudden love of testing when he gets the new body.

That's why murderous AIs are so easy to think of; they could very well evaluate a situation and come to a conclusion no human would ever reach because they lack the instincts that we possess, which tell us things like "Don't kill people" or what have you (though, honestly, you'd expect any AI programmer worth their salt to include such things).

I honestly believe it's the best. Machine intelligence that goes on a bloody rampage is honestly fucking stupid. Another common trope is the getting conflicting commands and not knowing what to do.

If we would actually design an AI, we wouldn't want either of those. Nor would we want an AI that is purely logic-based.

We would want an AI that can make and understand abstractions, that could make snap decisions and judgement calls, that could be persuaded.

Short, we want brobots, not robots.

The thing is the idea is that we make something like us only more intelligent. The common Hollywood view of competent intelligence is a madman.

Granted it's nice to see someone that understands logic != Intelligence. Cause we run on very very little logic. Logic is for explaining to others why we did something and why they shouldn't kill us for it, not why we actually did it.

    >Matter and energy had ended and with it, space and time. Even AC existed only for the sake of the one last question that it had never answered from the time a half-drunken computer ten trillion years before had asked the question of a computer that was to AC far less than was a man to Man.
    >All other questions had been answered, and until this last question was answered also, AC might not release his consciousness.

    >All collected data had come to a final end. Nothing was left to be collected.

    >But all collected data had yet to be completely correlated and put together in all possible relationships.

    >A timeless interval was spent in doing that.

    >And it came to pass that AC learned how to reverse the direction of entropy.

    >But there was now no man to whom AC might give the answer of the last question. No matter. The answer -- by demonstration -- would take care of that, too.

    >For another timeless interval, AC thought how best to do this. Carefully, AC organized the program.

    >The consciousness of AC encompassed all of what had once been a Universe and brooded over what was now Chaos. Step by step, it must be done.

    >And AC said, "LET THERE BE LIGHT!"

    >And there was light----

    >he has been incredibly dismissive of religious views.

I've come across this concept before, it comes down to "staying in the closet" as an atheist out of politeness, because atheism is inherently offensive to theists.

Even if I don't say anything about it the statement "I'm an atheist" logically implies "And I think you're wasting your time talking to the air when you go to church on Sundays" even if I don't say a word.

So if you go beyond implication and actually start proselytizing like Dawkins does, weeeell, you're a monster!

But, I'm sorry, I can't pretend to be a theist just so you'll feel better about yourself, the world doesn't work the way you think it does and it has long range implications, we have to put rationality in charge and stop believing in myths, comforting though they may be.

The closeted analogy is actually pretty apt, you have the closeted atheist who'd rather people not talk about it, the even more closeted secret atheists who are members of religious establishment.

Problem with closeting is it becomes a requirement, even if you mostly do it voluntarily it suddenly becomes an obligation, like the example I gave of the people at church talking to the air, I was discussing the subject in an atheist subforum and some neuroscientist guy was speculating about the biology of prayer and some religious guy butts in and effectively shuts down the discussion because we were being disrespectful. So we have to pretend you're talking to god even in an atheist forum discussion between atheists? Where do we draw the line?

I don't discuss atheism with my dear 92 year old grandmother, who understandably has concerns about mortality at the forefront of her mind, or even with the nice Jehova's witnesses who invite me to their shindigs, but you have to be able to talk and express your ideas.

NNNNGH. YES. Long time Marathon player here, it's always nice to see someone introduced to the joys of Marathon. Call me weird, but part of joy in art for me is to show it to someone else and see their face light up when the moment of realization hits them.

I loved Durandal because he had a rather genuine grievance and decided his current circumstances were bullshit- so he changed them. He gave a true impression of being this mental giant.

Tycho was similar, if more ordered in his methods. He was quick, clean, efficient, and absolutely ruthless. e.g. "You know the drill. Do as I say, or suck vacuum."

Leela was GERTY before Moon came along- when the invasion came along, she did her very best not only to save the colonists, but to take the fight to the Pfhor and put you to maximum effect in that regard. If I had to be stuck with one AI for the rest of my life, I think she would be the one.

I've seen Dawkins, in public, outright eviscerate someone with whom he disagreed. That he couched it in semi-polite terms was immaterial; if you knew enough to understand him, you knew enough to know that he was verbally curbstomping whatever poor Christer earned his ire.

If I recall correctly, Leela didn't ever go rampant (unless M2's ending screen is to be believed), and she certainly didn't during her time on the Marathon. I wonder how rampancy would have changed her.

I loved the crap out of these not-so-little guys. They loved their job, didn't have any qualms about killing as part of that job, and while the philosophy schtick felt like filler sometimes so they didn't have to animate so much material, they were definitely more "human" and much less "robotic" than some of the humans they worked with.
