So, I did some crunching of numbers this evening as I was making a Deathwatch techpriest.

I got him a Master-Craft bionic heart as part of his background, which gave him Sprint. Curious, I looked it up, then realized that my starting character, in power armor, could run flat out a rate of 60 meters for one round (12 meters a second) without using the solo mode ability to boost his speed. That's an eight foot dude running at about 27 miles an hour. Conversely, the world's fastest time for the 100 meter dash is 9.58 seconds by Usain Bolt, meaning he can run at 10.4 meters per second.

A relatively green space marine with average for space marines agility can outrun the fastest man on Earth with a little effort. Makes sense. But now, I decided to see how fast the Fastest Space Marine Alive could go.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/11(Fri)00:41 No.15141253
Giving him a starting Agility of 50 (the best possible), make him a Blood Angel for +5 Agility, and A Fury Like Lightning for his armor for +5 more Agility. Then, we give him +20 more Agility from maxing out his advances. Making him Rank 5, Burst of Speed gives him +4 to his Agility Bonus for the purposes of movement, making +5 combined with his armor. We now have an effective agility bonus of 13 for one round per session. This means a Run speed of 78, or 156 meters per round with Run, which translates to 31.2 meters a second (nearly 70 miles an hour), which, kinda scarily, is EXACTLY 3 times faster than Usain Bolt.

And then I saw the thing that can give you Unnatural Speed (Double Agility bonus for speed) and Unnatural Agility (double Agility bonus) for 1d10 rounds.

Since I absolutely hate messing with Unnatural stuff due to questions of which bonuses go where and when, I came up with four different numbers of how fast he could go with this. I'm assuming Unnatural Speed doesn't multiply the multiplication of UA because that would get completely stupid really quickly (as if it wasn't already.)

If Unnatural Speed + Agility is an effective x3 to Agility bonus for speed, and bonuses come after, he runs at 145 miles an hour.

If Unnatural Speed + Agility is an effective x4 to Agility bonus for speed, and bonuses come after it, he runs at 193 miles an hour.

If Unnatural Speed + Agility is an effective x3 to Agility bonus for speed, including bonuses, he runs at 209 miles an hour.

Finally, if Unnatural Speed + Agility is an effective x4 to Agility bonus for speed, including bonuses, he runs at a mind-boggling 279 miles an hour.

Imagine a two ton man in power armor powerfisting you in the face at 279 miles an hour. That is what it is like to be a citizen of the Imperium in the 41st millennium.

If my math is right, after some conversions to make the numbers work with some online calculators, the final force of the marine impacting something is:

    226,295.65 Newtons.

By comparison, an average (spacecraft) rocket engine produces 28,913 Newtons of thrust. Your space marine is roughly eight rockets strapped together. Congratulations.

All I remember is a blur.

We were surrounded by servants of the False Gods, men were dropping left and right. Our orders were to hold and we would at all costs, but it seemed as though it wouldn't be enough. The cultists were easy enough, but there were a half dozen Dark Astartes amongst their number.

And then the blur came. Three of the fallen marines dropped dead before anyone knew what was happening. One had his chainsword raised over his head, getting ready to decapitate my Sergeant. The next instant, he was flattened against a wall a solid hundred meters away. The other two were killed while running away, as though they had seem something that could strike fear into a ten thousand year old traitor.

The rest of the culists, 3 score strong, fell apart. The blur moved around them like a gory tornado, setting heads to roll.

    And then it was over.

Five loyal Astartes eventually found us, panting as though they had sprinted a great distance. When we told them what had happened, the leader laughed and said that "he was up to it again."

Who "he" was I shall never know, but I thank that glorious bolt of lightening from the Emperor's fist.

I mean... thinking about it, all I can see is him having some kind of freaking cricket jumping legs or something. One super hard launch, but no actual acceleration past that. Wouldn't his launching have a force of 200k newtons?

Unnatural agility doesn't give extra speed, only unnatural speed does that. So essentially it's only a x2 modifier. Sorry to disappoint, but you're going to have to find more unnatural speed, not unnatural agility.

To fully elaborate on the process involved:

Run lets you go six times your agility bonus in speed. The marine's base agility is 70 in the example, and boosted up to 130 via armor, trait increases, and Burst of Speed. This means his agility bonus is 13 for a single round for Running at speed of 156 (9 at all other times, Running at a speed of 108).

Sprint gives you this: "when taking the Run action, you may double your movement speed for one round."

This means that, without the dilation field or the burst of speed, he can run at about 48 miles an hour, and gains a level of fatigue if he sprints at this speed for two turns in a row (presumably more levels accrue if you keep going.)

It's the Dilation Field (Unnatural Speed + Unnatural Agility for 1d10 rounds, recharge = 1 hour) that catapults this from standard Space Marine goofiness to fucking Speed Force levels.

    >TVTROPES, Required Secondary Powers

Super Speed - These characters are somehow immune to the effects of friction - specifically, the chafing that would naturally occur from using extremely rapid speed for extended periods of time, especially while wearing spandex. Again, this is only for characters that aren't explicitly described as Nigh Invulnerable; presumably, that would also cover friction damage. The same applies to the materials in contact with speedster, especially clothes (that should be bent to move): either invulnerability is extended to them or they are going to be damaged and possibly disintegrated/incinerated*

For instance, the various speedsters of the The DCU related to The Flash each have a thin invisible aura that protects their bodies from air friction (and, presumably, the impact of their feet hitting the ground at several hundred miles per hour several hundred times per second).
And they face a problem the other direction, of having too little friction. Feet coming down at superspeed would presumably have super impact, and push them off the ground and at least a few feet in the air. Even once that's explained, someone going at superspeed over the slightest hill, or up stairs, or just random dips in the ground, would lose contact with the ground, they would keep going in the 'same direction' as before, into the air. *

The faster ones would be launched into orbit, especially while doing the 'run around the world' trick. They have to have something that holds them in contact with the ground better than gravity if they don't want to end up hurtling comically though the air every other step like a Wuxia character.

Speedsters also must possess a very powerful and efficient metabolism, which keeps them from needing to drink several times their weight in pure nectar every day (In recent years, this element has been often used to justify faster healing). Sometimes, this is partly averted - more than one character like this has been shown to be a Big Eater to power their abilities - though not even spending 24/7 in front of an all-you-can-eat ice cream and candy buffet could provide enough calories to power more than a second or two of supersonic running speeds. Which means that every Speedster really is a Perpetuum Mobile. Also, they have to have a very high stamina, as running from New York to Los Angeles all at once should be impossible no matter how fast they do it. They also have to have super friction powers (again with the friction), so that they can actually keep their footing when turning on surfaces that aren't specially constructed for high-speed travel. Cars turn easily at sixty miles per hour on (properly angled) asphalt, but they'd have a much harder time on tile.
And if their speed is too high for a given viscosity, there's no time for collisions to be resolved quietly, so normally soft substances (like water or plastics) are going to behave like hard ones: literal blades of grass, glass puddles, buckshot raindrops, shrapnel snow, fragile clothes, that sort of thing. Speedsters who pick up or put down anything while speeding also have to have some power that cushions the impact. Otherwise, attempting to grab a person when you're running at a hundred miles an hour wouldn't pick them up, it would snap them in half.

If these characters approach the speed of light, they would experience time dilation. Furthermore, speedsters never get specks of dust caught in their eyes...
They would also need some type of super-concentration. Given that they must have some form of Super Reflexes so they can react normally to things at super-speed, they should perceive normal speed to be horrifyingly slow. Imagine trying to hold a conversation with people who take several hours to speak a single word. Similarly, if a speedster does something like typing millions of password combinations into a computer, he must somehow avoid getting bored after the first few hundred. Or they may have nervous systems that can multitask at different speeds, allowing them to perform (for example) simple manual tasks at superspeed while only being consciously aware of a few seconds passing.

279 mph (or whatever the exact number is in meters per second) would be his average velocity - total distance divided by total time. Assuming he's at a dead stop at both the beginning and end of his lightning-fast sprint, his maximum velocity at the midpoint would be quite a bit higher.

Characters with super speed must also be able to withstand massive g-forces caused by rapid acceleration/deceleration, since most of them are shown to be able to start/stop instantly (rarely applies to those who lack this talent, but they may end up going Too Fast To Stop as a result and find that Inertia Is A Harsh Mistress). This must make the character somehow able to anchor to the ground while stopping too, since friction with the ground can only go so far - but often they just instantly stop. More than likely this uses some form of Inertial Dampening rather than actual friction, as it normally fails to tear up the roadway or set it on fire.

You know, I find it's best not to apply the Laws of Thermodynamics to RPGs.

Once, the party I was DMing for tried the whole "Peasant Railgun" trick (3000 peasants, readied actions, one spear, RAILGUN). They even paid to hire 3000 peasants and everything.

So I allowed it... but I also fucked it up by ruling that the spear had grown so hot from the amount of energy it was picking up and from the friction it was experencing that it literally melted the hands off the peasants after #1000. Also, it shot straight towards the castle they were aiming at, went through it, then continued at a tangent off the planet in the direction they had thrown it... and hit the moon, causing it to explode and rain down bits of moon rock on the planet the size of castles.

    OP here again. EVEN BETTER.

There is a relic in rites of battle for Blood Angels.

    It's a jump pack.

    It TRIPLES base movement.

Now, somebody figure out how this works with Unnatural Speed, because I think we're looking at anywhere between 4x and 6x base speed, rules-legal. Depending on if bonuses are counted first or after, we could be breaking the sound barrier.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/11(Fri)02:13 No.15141902
Even with all that, there's really no rules in game for adding bonus damage die to damage rolls for adding additional momentum to your attack.

Sprint and Run are only movements, unless Deadwatch somehow incorporates them into the attack phase, all you can do is run right next to a guy, and stand there for a round, then hit him for 2d10.

Even Charging doesn't add bonus damage die.

"I charge (However fast you can charge with your set-up) and punch the guy."

    "Roll your hit."

    "I hit."

    "Congrats. Now roll 2d10."

    Woooooooooo.

    Unnatural Speed = Multiplying AB

Jump Pack = Multiplying Base Movement
    >> Anonymous 06/03/11(Fri)02:23 No.15141997
    MATH FOR THE MATH GOD

    SPEED FOR THE SPEED THRONE

Unnatural Speed doubles your base movement by doubling your Agility bonus.

Wings of Saronathis is a jump pack that lets you move at triple your base speed.

So, if I did this all right:

If Unnatural Speed + Wings of Saronathis an effective x4 to base speed (following Unnatural stacking rules), and bonuses come after (following precedent in the books), he runs at 187 miles an hour. If the bonuses are included, he's running at 300 miles an hour.

If they combine to multiply base speed by six (double speed, tripled), and bonuses come after it, he runs at 263 miles an hour. If bonuses are included, he runs at 488 miles an hour.

    For perspective:

This guy can run a quarter of a mile (four and a half football fields) in five seconds. In the time it takes you to say "One one thousand" he's grabbed the ball in the other guy's endzone, plowed through the entire team, and is about to score a touchdown.

At his highest estimated speed, he can go a kilometer (about two thirds of a mile, nearly twelve football fields) in five seconds. In the football example, he made it back to his endzone, and then doubled back and scored a touchdown in their endzone to humiliate them, and then went about halfway back to his own endzone.

    In five seconds.

    THIS DUDE IS FAST.

The beak acts like an aerospike to cut down on the overall air resistance.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag-resistant_aerospike

    >Further development of this concept has resulted in the air-spike. This is formed by concentrated energy, either from an electric arc torch or a pulsed laser, projected forwards from the body, which produces a region of low density hot air ahead of the body. This has the advantage over a structural aerospike that the air density is lower than that behind a shock wave providing increased drag reduction.

...40k's big on head mounted weapons and stuff, right? Maybe there's a way to pull this off with a mandiblaster or something. If not, we could always just try using some tech heresy to fit a beaky helmet with a power field.

I just feel compelled to tell you that, while there are no rules for speeds effect on impact, there are rules for ramming.

1d10 + AP damage if it moved tactical speed. If it moved twice tactical speed, that goes up to 2d10 + AP. This is based on vehicles like Rhinos, with 24 AP and a Tactical Speed of 15m p/round. If we assume the AP to Tactical Speed ratio holds true, than a Marine with AP 8 should have a tactical speed of 5m p/round.

Which would mean that for every 5m per round a Space Marine was moving before impact, he would do 1d10 + AP damage on impact.

Which, for our speedy friend (assume he has this horrific jetpack on), is somewhere in the vicinity of 155d10 + AP damage. And the target gets knocked back 1m for every point of damage.

Unless that bitch has 163 combined points of armour, toughness and wounds, she's dead.

But if they did the math right, that would lead open the door to figuring out how much energy would have to be expended by the Marine to move that much mass at that speed for any duration. And then we'd get bogged down in shit like metabolism and growth cycles as we realised this speedy son-of-a-bitch would have to eat an elephant-a-day to keep his power levels up, and that his bones would be riddled with micro-fractures from the constant stress of de/acceleration.

Shame that Unnatural Agility doesn't actually apply to running speed.

    However, for bonus points:

-'Slaught from Dark Heresy increases the user's agility bonus by 3 for 2d10 minutes. It's not unnatural agility, so I assume it increases running speed.

    - Find a way to give him the Quadraped trait. Somehow.
It multiplies your AB by 2 for the purposes of speed.
    If you get 6 legs, that's x3, 8 is x4.

In the Grim Darkness of the far future, centipedes can run faster than sound.

    >>15141253
It's none of your opinions. Unnatural agility doesn't change speed at all. So you only have a x2 to the bonus for the purposes of speed. Further bonuses (Burst of speed, etc) are added after unnatural bonuses.

If I haven't missed anything in your post, he would have an effective Ag bonus of 21.

A flying marine with rockets strapped to his back can travel at several hundred miles per hour.

    we take a horse . . . . right?

we take a horse, mutate an extra pair of legs on it

    ready guys?

then we strap 2 jetpacks in it's ass

then we put our speed marine in the saddle, with his own jetpack

then we give him a power lance
And watch as he gets medieval on Chaos ass

If we want to truly rearrange a solar system we need an entire chapter of these marines. With how much force they generate they can throw each other into orbit, then super run back down into the planet.

Men, I believe we have created a marine powered planetary engine!

Since the dilation field thingy has a 1 hour cooldown, lets assume that half the chapter hits the planet (or ship, or whatever) every half hour. That's 500 marines doing minimum 150ish damage, and pushing it that many meters every half hour. that's 75000 meters, or 75km every half hour, which is 150km/hr.

Alright, not the fastest, but still, they can do that to anything that can survive the impact.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/11(Fri)15:35 No.15146846
    >>15146812

waitaminute, if we go to average damage/push distance. Average roll on a d10 is 5.5, multiply that by 144 thats 792 per marine per hour.

So an entire chapter would do 792000 meters per hour, or 792 km/hour

    ....

    can someone check that math/
    >> Anonymous 06/03/11(Fri)15:49 No.15146960

That's the idea of a slam attack and not a "charge headfirst as to crunch your neck" attack. They assume you're going to slam into someone in such a way that you won't injure yourself intentionally. They didn't plan on this kind of speed factored in, of course, as it's not really the spirit. BUT WHO NEEDS SPIRIT WHEN YOU'RE GOING TOE-TO-TOE WITH THE ONE AND ONLY!?
