We are deeply sorry for you loss. But you might as well make the best of your current situation.

You may not be able to move or communicate, but that doesn't mean you need to be bored for an eternity. You still have all your senses to observe your surroundings, and you still have your mind to think about things.

Well, you're a smart guy, I'm sure you'll figure it all out.

Oh, if only it were that easy.

Unfortunately you were a... less-than-good person in life. So some of your enemies made certain that after you died, you cannot ever pass on. I suppose you could call this karma for a life full of ill deeds. Your consciousness is trapped inside your body (which is technically now just a skull), for all eternity.

You've spent the last few centuries trying to figure a way out of this predicament, but it's just not happening. But hey, it's not that bad though, you get used to it after a while.

I'm way ahead of you on that one, brother.

At first you were disgusted by wriggling and squirming feeling that emanated throughout your decomposing body, as countless slimy things feasted on you. But soon you came to not only accept, but enjoy the company. As your body shrunk and liquified, you slowly realized that you were starting to miss your saprotrophic friends. Now that you have been gnawed down to polished bone, you only attract the occasional nibble, but you are always sure to cherish the feeling as though it were a careful massage.

    Ah, yes.

It's a bit unpleasant, but you've come to terms with it. You were actually in Javikre when it happened. You had fled after your army was defeated in Arnongol two years prior and were in hiding at a small inn. You had done everything you could to not draw attention to yourself, and assumed that they would never find you there. But, they burst into the room while you were bathing and tied you up. Ultimately it was some minor governor who caught you and punished you for allowing your men to defile his daughters, burning his lands, tearing down his temples. You know the drill.

He had hired a priest to perform this weird ritual on you before you were killed, and voila. Eternal non-death. Your body was thrown into a garbage pit and has been through all sorts of misadventures since.

So, once we've got our basic mechanical setup, we'll need to decide what sort of parameters there are; we can always add more objects, so let's start small. I'm thinking spherical; stay with the familiar and all that, and we'll work with about 100 of them to start with to get all the calculations figured out in terms of how they'll interact. We're operating off of an infinate space, so some sort of effect that brings the objects back together seems sound. Other suggestions?

He talked about how you deserved this, his daughters, about how it was justice and blah blah blah. Some people just won't let shit go.

make our world inverted. Sun in the middle, livable surface surrounding it. Make it a bubbleverse so if one digs through the ground they find other worlds.of similar setup. The suns repel everything else and that is what creates gravity on the surroundling land. The equations should balance out so that the land perimiter around the sun is always the livable zone of orbit.

Yeah, you tried comping up with a few different accounts of your life at various points: epics, ballads, historicals accounts. But without any way to write them down... and without any knowledge of basic literary structure, they were all doomed to failure. You still remember the title of one of them though:

"THE MAN WHO SURPASSED ALL OTHER GODS AND KINGS: The Grand Epic of the Assent, Fall, and redemption of Geyr the God-King of the land of Mojur"

Okay, you have quieted the noise of everything around you. You're imagining a world around you. Just your immediate surroundings for now.

But you want it to be original...

A curved, hollow-world setting. Hanging between the ground and the sun is an unmoving layer of rainbow-colored clouds. It is always daytime, but depending on where you move to around the world, it might be colored differently.

There is no soil at all, the ground is made entirely of rock. There is also no wood. The only "plantlife" are bizarre alien-looking giant fungi and lichens that cling to the rocks.

Before you melted down it's sacred statues for the silver and enslaved it's priests you took note of the god's name, because it was so silly-sounding: Koioukoi. Okay, let's try praying to this "demon".

Oh, great Koioukoi! Although your puny people crumbled under the might of my army, and although you are only a tiny, insignificant god, whom some would say is not worthy of worship by such a great God-King, we beseech you! I have an idea to keep us entertained in the interim period between now and when we're picked up or noticed or something:
Let's create multiple personalities. Lots of them, maybe even dozens of them. I mean, we're not crazy, we know who we are, and we know that those other personalities are just purposeful extensions of ourselves, but it's important to have extra personalities for step two of the plan.
See, we're going to create these personalities, so that we have other...'sort of' people around so that we can get differing opinions on the same topics. I mean, we know they're all our own opinions, but it's more fun to do them in different voices or something, y'know?
So, we put these personalities in reserve, right? Then we use our dominant personality to create a sort of...adventure for the others. Like, we create a premise and boundaries and an objective and we give our other personalities certain roles to play and influences to take into account.
And then we, the dominant personality talk to the lesser personalities and ask them what they do in this premise. Sort of like...a quest of some kind. And we see how long it takes before they achieve the objective that we assigned.

And it is said that in the oldest of times, an ancient race walked through the worlds. They were giant and powerful, but proud. For they thought themselves greater that the many-tentancled gods whose wrath they incurred. And so this ancient race was wiped from the planet in a mighty flood. All perished, except one man, who was most pious of the gods: Richard Thionsi. The gods made his body into rock so that it would not drown, and he survived the deluge.

Firstly, let's make it out of stone instead of wood. And put some columns on it. Bitches love columns. And instead of the shabby open-frame windows, let's cut in narrow slits to allow light to pour in. And a dome. And some flying buttresses at the end.

She's in the tent, at the potter's wheel, like always. Earlier she was nervously looking over her shoulder at the argument between her father and Morsen, but now she's focused on her work. Hetur makes her do almost all of the work, while he just sits around and sells the pots. She's twelve years old, has light brown hair, and is fairly tall for a girl. She's in the same pose she is for pose of the day, hunched over the wheel, hair wrapped up, squeezing the clay, and pumping the spinning wheel with her foot.

Okay, it's mid-day so there's only the saddest assortment of prostitutes outside. Through the open window you can see Sturk, the bartender. He's young and charismatic, everyone likes him. There's a few people sitting at the bar. It looks like they're together: A short man and a butch woman. Both wearing mostly leather. I can hear music inside, but can't see the musician. Upstairs I hear a discussion in one of the rooms. It sounds like three men.

On the third floor is Naljis's suite, he's the owner. He's probably in, but I don't hear anything. He might be doing some paperwork.

Well, the idea being that if you can't physically interact with the world or communicate or anything, then you would just have to be a fly on the wall and watch all the cool stories unraveling around you. Which, I assumed, would sound really cool.

And that brings up some cool issues about interactivity, because deciding what to focus would change the stories drastically, so it actually is effecting the world, despite claiming not to.

    >And that brings up some cool issues about interactivity, because deciding what to focus would change the stories drastically, so it actually is effecting the world, despite claiming not to.
    How?

The real reason people did not get it is because lacking interactivity is pretty much the one thing Quest Threads do not do, and your thread proclaims Quest in the header. I'd bet anything the guy saying 'Listen' did not think 'Listen' was and would be the only option available.

What's funny is, Omnipotence quest was constantly pushed to be similar to this. People just wanted to watch stuff happen with minimal interference. The difference between that and this is that in Omnipotence quest we could interact and change things beyond just who we watched if we wanted to. There are plenty of people on /tg/ who would be happy to participate in Writequest: The Authoring provided you're a decent writer, but it would be nice to have at least a small ability to influence events.

But you are influencing events. I mean... here, a quest doesn't work like real life. Let's take, for example, that fight described earlier between Hetur and Morsen. The events that follow that aren't written in stone at all, there's just a bunch of vague. So if /tg/ starts following one character, it might lead to a brutal and blood feud between the two of them, or if may lead to a character subtly poisoning another, or it may lead to all sorts of weird shit depending on what's focused on.

Yeah, it LEADS to things happening, but it's not like we know what's going to happen, we have no idea what our focusing could cause. It's not like we're going ">push boulder down mountain and see who it hits" or something along those lines, it's just, ">stay a while and see what happens". We're not ACTUALLY influencing it in terms of our actual character, at least not consciously.

Despite all that, it's a very interesting concept, and the setting seems fun enough. We just need to be able to stretch our legs a little, if you'll excuse the joke. It's just good game design!

This world, as far as anyone can tell, is a flat plane that expands infinitely in all directions. There is no "sun", only a haze in the sky that is seemingly locked in place. So in other words, every location has it's own unique weather that never changes.

Most of the world has rock as the ground and intensely hot or cold temperatures. The few stable areas are usually in bizarre, highly isolated places: enormous floating boulders, deep pit cities with sheer edges, high flat-top mesas, completely enclosed caves with glowing rock, small areas surrounded entirely by fog, etc. Each area has it's own form of government and means of commerce.

Transportation is done by weird linking-pebbles. It's impossible to tell them from a normal pebble, but when you touch them, you are instantly teleported to the linked-pebble. These are extremely valuable and carefully regulated by each city as they are found.

    And so forth.

God fucking damnit, now I am a skeleton. I thought of having those "second chance" artifacts were a bad a idea, now here I am. Took my fucking years to get my soul back from the very hands of kelemvor then back to the fucking maze.

And I tell you, it's much harder impress ladies when one is all bone, polished or not. Some clerics come back trying to shoo the evil negative energy.

Is it so fucking hard that some stay alive through sheer force of will? That and artifacts, fruits. Whatever.

Yes. He also has an elder daughter named Berga. She doesnt live with them anymore, and sends fairly large amounts of money every now and then. From some gossip around town, I've heard that she's a kept-woman, a courtesan, for a rich businessman across the river. As for Hetur's wife, she died from an illness a few years back. Shortly afterward he married Unne, Morsen's daughter.

    Well, I'll probably stop soon.

But this has given some valuable lessons in the world of skull-based storytelling. I'll try to try this again eventually, with some revamps. New background player info, new introduction, new title, new setting, new characters, etc.

For those of you who are interested, parts of the story were vaguely inspired by Njal's Saga, and likewise the names were bastardized from Icelandic names. Also, an interesting, but not-too-good text adventure game called ( http://www.illuminatedlantern.com/?page_id=21 )

Well, in case we don't meet these characters again:

Part of the story which wasn't revealed is that she was previously semi-engaged to Karis, one of Morsen's sons. Although he loves her, Hetur has set up an exorbitant bridal fee. So in order to gain the money, he's been working for the city watch at night.

One potential sub-plot involves him stumbling across Luret during his night watch activities, and finding him in the middle of one of his hard gay exploits. He would then blackmail Hetur into fixing all these problems, allowing he and Flosi would live happily ever after.

But then again, other possible outcomes were bad, and some were mixed, like Karis semi-kidnapping / semi-eloping with Flosi.

You know what really would have helped? Some (extremely limited) psychic abilities. Nothing like mind control or telekinesis, but just enough to put a passing thought into someone's head, make them notice something they might have otherwise missed, or give them a mild headache.

Don't listen to any of these assholes telling you to change the way your quests work.
    This is gold; pure gold.
It completely demonstrates the futility of quest threads and recreates a truly palpable sense of frustration that would come with being the character that your quest created.
    This is an absolute treasure.
I can only hope that dozens more quests are created along this vein.

That's a pretty good idea. The revised background I'm thinking of would make the main character some kind of magician or something who screwed up and is now stuck like this.

And, you know what? Maybe even just have it be a spirit. Like a ghost or something, I dunno.

    >> Anonymous 07/29/11(Fri)04:55 No.15742193
I do like this idea quite a bit, but I do agree with some of the other comments.

While reading through the thread, I was indeed drawn in by the surroundings, but as soon as I learned more about our own character, I was most interested in him, I mean... dead god-king? Sheesh!

If we were simply a skull, alive for reasons it could not discern, with a memory that had faded with the ages until it had no identity, THEN it might be easier to be less self-centered. As-is, it is just far too tempting to learn about this one character, even knowing there is nothing he can do. You just want to get picked up so badly, you know?

Exactly what I said. A dead god king who is still present in the world is "Dead God-King quest", wherein the objective is to regain power and surpass that baby-eater king to once again become the most evil king in the world. And with our soul bound to our bones, we would be immortal and therefore even closer to being a god-king than before.

implied that we were supposed to figure out a way to get back into the game of life, or unlife.

A very peculiar series of events unfolds right in front of a you.

Under your watchful gaze, a man pulling a cart passes by. On the cart there are a number of fruits, probably destined to be sold on the market. However, a single orange seems to be rejecting its fate.

The cart is thrown a bit by a rock that happens to be in its path (was it there before? You could've sworn that the road was smooth), throwing off a single fruit.

The fruit bounces on the ground a few times, rolling away from you, until a young kid acrossthe street tries to grab it. He misses for the first time and the orange rolls away, but unavailed by the failure, he tries again.

As he runs after the rolling fruit, he skips on something, falling face forward to the ground... or he would have, if there wasn't a small tree growing in the way. As it is, the kid headbutts the tree with considerable force, even knocking few of the loose leaves free. He is alright though, and he got the orange!

One of the leaves falls towards you and lands on your skull. And you hear a voice.

    "Hey. How's it going?"

"Uh, hello. Nice weather, isn't it?"
    "Yeah, pretty good."
"I just love laying here feeling the wind carass my bones. Though, a bit more humidity would be good. I'm really tired of this dry dust in my mouth. Say, do you know what happened to Flossi?"
"Flossi? I don't know anyone named like that. I just arrived on that cart you know. Hanging around, helping out people, trying to change history so my death doesn't happen..."
