103 KB Pirates of the Warp Anonymous 07/30/11(Sat)16:59 No.15759678
Ahoy landlubbers are any of the people from last nights pirates of the warp spawning thread here?
If so I'll tell you how my play test went.

Heres the original thread so you can get informed if you are interested.

To expand the idea is basically making a game centered around various factions of pirates in the 40k universe using a mix of small BFG skirmishes to represent ship combat and small 40k skirmishes to represent boarding actions and raids within the greater fleet fights.
I'll just be bumping with images.

    Well, certainly interesting.
I made a very winding set-up terrain wise so it took the attackers forever to get through. By turn 6 they had only gotten halfway so we will either need to increase turn limit or increase the space infantry can move per turn. I recommend the second.

If we had to increase movement speed, what if we gave everyone fleet of <movement method> and models who already had it get like +3 to their roll, or an additional roll or something?

Captain Razor Beard and his misfit crew of renegade Necrons.

They regained enough of their minds to RAGE AGAINST THE FALSE GODS.

The legendary Retvayn was the first. He had been frozen in a glacier since gods know when and so had a long time to regain his faculties with the absence of dying. Then he had ample time to be driven slightly mad by the isolation.

As soon as the glacier shat him out he walked back to the Vault and murdered the local incarnation of the Deceiver. Then he hi-jacked a ship and set sail for the open skies.

they are not as immortal as their mundane counterparts any more. Complete vaporization for instance will kill them as they severed their connection to the Node Network.

Their only real motivation is the prospect of killing C'tan.

    Captain Marv the Mutilated.

He was part of the Imperial Merchant Navy back in the day. Took a melta-weapon blast. Just far enough away to not be vaporized but close enough to be royally fucked up.

He was placed in a sterile nutri-goop tank with a mind impulse unit plugged into what was left of his spine and brain. He enslaved the Machine Spirits of the ship to his mind and then bound the minds of the serivtor members of the crew to the ship. Over the next 300 years as the human members of the ship retired they were replaced by servitors bound to his ship.

The only non-servitor members of the crew are the tech-adepts in exile from the Mechanicus. Outcast Mechanicus.

The servitors are notably brighter than their more mundane counterparts and can even survive on their own to an extent, but they will crave the company of the ship. As they are fond of saying 'Part of the Crew, part of the Ship'.

There was once a story of a ship. A ship that may well have been one of the fabled Black Ships, but is now something darker still.

They say the Navigator went mad. Became convinced that the shimmering lights 'below' was the glare of the Astronomican 'above' and so plunged the vessel 'down' to find it.

For forty days and forty nights the vessel sank into the heights of the deep warp. Past sirens and furies and strange impossible things.

They say the prisoners escaped and raped and mutilated and murdered the crew again and again and again. And maybe that was bad for them but no as bad for us should they have been trapped for ever in that otherworldly hell.

But the warp is a hateful mistress that cares not for the pleasures of us mortal folk.

She spat that vessel back out, it's crew knowing that the only escape from the horrors they have endured is to inflict them upon another so that an innocent soul can take their place.

Should you see a ship belched into the void of maggot ridden architecture and fused bone and rotten flesh then by all that is merciful slit your own throat and blow the Fusion Reactor for mercies sake. If all failing that take a space walk without a helmet as a death in the embrace of Mother Void is better that having to see what I saw on that ship, better to die.

    ok playtester back.

I found that flamers were awesome against hordes of crew, great for clearing entire hallways full of goons.
Terminators, even though you can only get 3 in a kill team just wreck at what they were invented for (ship clearing actions) and will slaughter down anything with lightening claws. Bonus points if you can use berzerkers or something as meatshields.
Warp spiders were also decent at jumping into a corridor and jumping back out before retaliation could hit.
Definitely think limits of 1 squad that isn't a troops choice outside killteam is way to go.

What if we made movement variable from game to game? you get the default 6 inches, plus an additional d6 inches. the total becomes the standard movement for the game.

    Do it by save maybe?

where total movement=base + armor save

    So a termie gets 8 inches (6+2) while a scout gets 10 (6+4).

So you'd have to balance it between protection VS speed.

I know someone is going to complain about how race X would get ludicrous movement speed, but come on! these are pirates, hardly the most cautious when moving about.

Sisters are renegade(but not enough for chaos to be obvious)/ on a mission to cleanse a sector of pirates and have adopted similar tactics (the sisterhood of calypso?)

Grey knights are stranded away from the imperium and have to use piratical methods to get back

Well, technically the rules represent the tactics more than the attitude.

Tyranids? Rading imperial shipping to sow chaos to make things easier for the hive

Sisters: again, fallen/fought pirates/raiders so much they have adopted speddier tactics to accomodate the speed of a battle within the bowels of a ship

Grey Knights have been mentioned as being too honor-driven and sober to be pirates. And I agree.

But what if there was an obsessed Grey Knight Captain who obsessively led his crew from warp storm to warp storm looking for the Great White Daemon, a Leviathan that could consume whole planets if it ever left the Warp?

The idea is that that the Grey Knights in the area have such a mad-on for whatever it is they're hunting that pretty much every pirate ship will actively try to avoid being anywhere near them if they can help it, either because they're xenos or heretics or regular humans who would likely be press-ganged.

Captain Ahab arrives in system as a wild card and the general pirate reaction is NOPE.

Guys guys, to qualify as one of the great pirate lords of the 41st millennium you have to be able to hold a seat at the Brethren Court, working WITH the other lords at times of crisis. Honor amongst thieves and all.

There was strong emphasis in the first thread about pirates working together. The idea is to limit a single pirate lord to a cruiser sized flagship with some escorts, so as not to have the ability to take on an Imperial battleship and her escorts, thus giving credibility to Imperial navy. You want to take on a treasure fleet? Hope you got friends because it's escorted by the navy. The navy running a pirate sweeping campaign? Better band together if you wan to survive.

Kaptin Bluddflagg is a bit different because he's the one lord with a ship big enough to go toe to toe with a battleship, but he doesn't have any other ships at all so he still needs to work with others if he wants escorts.

Infact a gargantuan Daemon Engine that acts as a host for Grand Daemon Flulln'nul Q'akssksao.
Captained by Arch-magus Mehdi Farzan who also acts an a astropath, has a throne in the bridge which he uses to link his mind with the ship.
Crewed by Rubric marines, slaves and Tzeentchian daemons.
Great arcane furnace fueled with psykers used to power the ship.
Have been known to work with other factions in the pursuit of a further goal such as finding an inquisition black ship or on one occasion - a pair of blue horrors that took the form of a pair of shoes owned by the wife of a back-water planetary governor.

Standard procedure is to find ships via their astropath's position in the warp, cripple, board, steal arcane goods plus the astropath for the furnace. Has unintended side effect of stranding ship with no way of communicating long distance. Inevitably causes desperate crew to turn to chaos. Just as planned.

Ecclesiarchy ships "His Merciless Judgement" and the "Infuria" sent to hunt down the "Ray of Deceit", found 3 years later drifting into imperium space; the entire crew a gibbering, delusional mess. Astropath and attached Sororitas missing. Both ships redirected by Space Marines from the Minotaurs chapter into nearby star with crew as to keep situation secret.

You know, I was in that thread, and I do not recall ANY of that.

'sides, you think pirates had exclusive tactics that no one else knew? hell, their tactics came from the king/queen's navy!

Here's a rationale for grey knights using similar tactics: Theis group specializes in hunting down and purging demon ships.

Sisters: Possibly went renegade, could specialize in/ used by an inquisitor for ship-to-ship actions and have adopted tactics that work for that

Tyranids: Hive fleet is sending out commerce raiders to sow chaos and restrict spplies reaching planets it wants to nom

NOTICE: at no point did I say these are PIRATES. I gave rationales as to why they would use a similar command/army structure.

Sisters and GK Aren't pirates (unless sisters are renegades of course) but are hunting them and use tactics that work.

Nids adapted a splinter fleet to serve a purpose similar to pirates, but more focused on the chaos/mayhem rather than the loot.

No there was, there was a debate over what kind of ship Wolf of Fenris is. Some people argued that it's a battle barge where as others argue it's a strike cruiser. Turns out it was a strike cruiser and we had a look at the other flagships and thought it made good sense to limit pirate fleet flagships to cruisers. Battleships needs 3 cruisers before you can even field them, and if each lord owns a battleship then if you want to run a "Battle of Maelstrom" type campaign you'll need an impossibly large Imperial fleet to pose a threat when the pirate lords band together.

And in any case battleships are slow and lumbering, so pirate lords probably wouldn't want them as flagships anyway.

Yeah but fluff-wise you need to come up with a reason to justify why a given faction should count as one of the great pirate lords (if you are playing pirates). Remember this is a pirate themed game not just "Age of Sail in SPESS".

Hell the original OP post was explicitly entertaining the theory that the known pirate lords in canon know of each other and have some kind of organization among them.

Tyranids: play an insectiod race as counts-as. NEXT!

GK: Yes, I agree these do pose a problem. all else fails, its marines who stole/modified their wargear.

    BOOM. Problem. Solved.

I'm all for including as many race as possible but look at the thread title, it's "Pirates of the Warp". You got to fluff your stuff properly to fit in with the pirate theme man. Someone suggested a "sea monster" angle for Tyranids and I see that as perfectly reasonable (although it may call for modified rules compared to normal pirate fleets). But if you want to put in GK and sisters then you need to come up with some good reason how they fit into this whole pirate thing. Are the sisters/GK pirate lords? Nemesis of pirate lords? What's their reason for fighting with/against the pirates?

If you're going to say "well there's these Grey Knights, they hunt a daemon Moby Dick", how does that fit into the larger picture? It seems like if that was the setup they will never have a run in with the other pirates as they're too busy doing their own thing?
    >> Shiver your timbers 07/30/11(Sat)20:23 No.15761657
    >>15761612
Did you read that comment your responding to? They makes sense to me.

Renegade sisters happen, and acts of faith could represent the powers of the warp beginning to take hold. So a group of sisters went rogue and became pirates (wasn't a former sister pirate even featured in the previous thread?)

For the grey knights: the first company of a chapter came across some really old tech, mechanicus demanded they hand it over. Marines tell machanicus to shove it up their ass, the company gets declared and attacked, they make it out with the tech and turn to piracy.

It would be awkward with that thousand sons captain someone mentioned earlier though.
    >> Anonymous 07/30/11(Sat)20:31 No.15761723
hell, what if the GK are hunting down an artifact, but it keeps being traded around the sector. After a while, they decided that intercepting shipping would be the easier way to find it. They use pirate tactics because if all the evidence points to pirates as being responsible for the raids, who would suspect them? They also work with human pirates that haven't fallen to chaos to assist them in their search.

But, I do believe >>15761672 has the crux of it. we should get the rules fun and very nearly balanced before we do the fluff or just not worry too much about the fluff. Even IF we disallow certain races people would still use em in games with their friends.

The idea with Captain Ahab GKs is to work in a way for them to be available in small numbers within the system.

Thinking of it from a Mordheim perspective, they can serve as a kind of "random event" that shows up in the middle of a pirate fight.

    >Wasn't a former sister pirate even featured in the previous thread?
Yes, her angle was "normal human pirate". We needed another representative for human pirates other than Huron Blackheart (he's the "pirate space marine" guy). Personally I would've preferred a rogue trader but apparently Jan van Yastobaal is a few millennial too old/dead.

Miriael Sabathiel is ex-sister now serving Slaanesh. We tried very hard to avoid the "hookers and blow" thing so she's all about perfection and stuff. Her second in command is her lover or something.

Seems quite reasonable to me, but it's probably not "fallen sister" thing that you're looking for because she's about normal human as pirates. If you're going to fluff sisters and GK as pirates then fine, but you need to come up with captain's name, flagship, and most importantly why they would turn to piracy while still thematically being sisters and GK. Otherwise why not just play Miriael or Huron?

Here's what I got for campaign rules so far:

Campaign 1 (Working title: hunt for the treasure)
Goal: find treasure located on one of the worlds in the system

an impartial outsider picks a random system on a map to hold the treasure (pic is an example from a similar, non 40k game I did a while ago)

each player picks one outlying system to be their "base"

Both sides have an initial fleet bridge, and crew.

    250pts for your fleet

    100Pts for the bridge

    200 points for crew
campaign is taken in turns. each turn, player rolls a d6 and may travel up to that many systems away. one their they may choose to either:

    A) raid shipping. gain (2d6)*10 points that may be added to fleet, bridge, or army lists or

    B) search they system for the treasure. if the treasure is not present, the impartial outsider may choose to give a warmer/colder hint to the player that searched the system, out of earshot of the other player(s)

Once treasure has been found, a player must get their fleet back to their base. the player who has the treasure may only make d3 jumps.

if two opposing fleets occupy the same system, a battle is initiated.

Fleet/bridge/crew lists may not be changed between battles

Mirieael believes in freedom for humanity through Chaos, the Sister believes in freedom through Imperial Salvation. They are more alike than they would think, and in another life could have been friends.

Yes, I think it was more talking about the original characters personality than the actual name.

As he is a just, honourable man who became a pirate to continue fighting the foes of humanity and for justice.

Wasn't criticizing, more pointing it out, since it amuses me that Harlock is seemingly exempt from accusations of 'weaboo' on /tg/.

Actually...they may have been. St Praxedes is Order of Our Martyred Lady, which has Black Armour and Red Cloth. Miriael Sabathiel has Black Armour and Red Cloth. I think they came from the same order.

    An Ogyrn Pirate.

    Gentleman Jared.

A Bone 'Ed that went a little wrong.

Has a crew of Ogyrn, the descendants of his old regiment. They all have some degree of the Bone 'Ed enhancements. Gentleman Jared's enhancements are probably the most severe. Some just have the most basic type of the extra storage space variety but others, the captain being the most obvious example, suffer a compulsion to gradually and sequentially replace more and more pieces of their brain to make them smarter.

The Captain, it is said, has only a machine inside his skull now. To the Mechanicus he is an Artificial Intellect and should be hunted down regardless of his piratical crimes.

The ship was a Rogue Trader vessel that went traitor and came to the attention of the Navy. It captured when the Ogyrn Regiment was sent on board with the instructions of detonating it's reactor.

Instead of a bright flash the Navy were expecting it translated into the Warp.

Deamons who have run away from their respective patrons and crafted new bodies for themselves in the Soul Forge.

They sought to usurp the Realm of Chaos and topple the gods from their thrones. the leader of them the Deamon King Ghul was slain and the fled to broken worlds and buried him with the Devils Chariot. They took the nearest systems for their own to stand vigil over the Kings Grave.

But the Eldar, at the height of their Empire, drove them out and cast most of the into the Warp where things were still waiting for them after all the eons.

But not all of them were driven out.

Some still sail the stary seas in a ship of broken bones fused to black and red iron.

ok so, I've found a way to overcome the difficulties I'd encountered with pirate necrons (well that I'd encountered before we started having all this pirate game fun)

    Empire handgunners/other Empire weaponry.

do you think this would work?

Didn't mean to do that. anyways here's the comments from the battle (full report is available on the forum (http://piofthwa.forumotion.com/t4-play-test-marines-vs-marines) but here's the other player's comments summed up:

Thought that the pacing was a little bit too fast

Most of his guys died the turn they entered play due to losing assaults and being forced off the board

Overall he thought it was very enjoyable

    Captain: Praxedes of Ophelia VII
    Ship: The Avalon
Crew: Adepta Sororitas and freed slaves.

A woman believed dead by the Imperium, Praxedes of Ophelia VII is anything but. Her and her sisters waded deep into the Tyranid forces on Okassis, buying time for the civilians to escape.

Here, fact and fiction separate. Praxedes and her troops escaped the planet and made it back to the Navy. She argued long and hard for the Imperium to send out fleets to hunt each splinter that broke off but they considered it unworthy of attention. Praxedes believed that unless the Imperium acted, the splinter fleets would be their undoing. Enraged by the Navies refusal to act she did something that few Sisters dared contemplate. She rebelled.

Under her command, a ship was taken in a daring raid of Seraphim and Celestians. By the time the navy realized what had been done, the ship had jumped into the warp and was gone.

Her name, along with a missions worth of others was struck from the records of living Sisters that day. The fuel of the Imperium is the blood of Martyrs and better a Martyr to the cause than a traitor. For a traitor may never be forgiven.

Praxedes of Ophelia is a tall woman, with the power to match. Her armour is still kept mirror bright, though her hair has grown long. A dueling scar, given by another pirate captain is a new additon since her start as a pirate.

She is beloved by her crew both the Sisters who would believe to this day that the Emperor stands with her decision and the crewmen who adore her for her charisma and willingness to stand beside them.

She desires to hunt down the Splinter fleets of the tyranids whereever they go, though she is not beyond matching arms with any raiders or heretics that cross her path, raiding them in turn. She has earned the esteem of many of the greater pirate captains for her ability to cut the chaff of piracy from a sector.

The Avalon is a wonder of a ship, gleaming like polished silver in the void. Her hallways are brightly lit and smell of faintly burning incence. It is clear that the crew of this ship hold great pride. While she may lack the unique technologies of the Eldar or the vile tricks of the Fallen, you will be hard pressed to find a ship as efficiant and devoted as that of the Avalon. Her crew of Sisters seems to mysteriously regain numbers whenever she loses them, not all from the same order but all currently listed as 'On Exercises' officially.

There we go, my attempt to fluff up a SOB who went pirate.

Hell yes. A female Captain Harlock for the Sisters. Playing very loose with canon but then, I don't think anyone really cares.
