I think it's an unfortunate cop-out of the developers to go for the 'lol all the protagonists from the 2nd game went insane' for Diablo 3

In the upcoming content for the game, they've hinted that this place, Caldeum, is a hive of corrupt nobility who secretly make demonic pacts or some such.

A much Better way of acknowleding the paladin imho would be to have depicted him as having investigated the city, and leaving a trail of notes or somesuch that players would follow to the end, where they meet his killers... or even meet him in the flesh where he makes a last stand or something

It's really less of a cop-out and more of acknowledging the depressingly grimdark nature everything must be these days. Everything must always end badly for everybody: it's the law.

They did that for Diablo 2 as well: Bloodraven was the Rogue, The Summoner was the Sorcerer and Diablo was the Warrior.

It fits fairly well tbh, I just think the disconnection between playing and what happens afterwards is that you spend your time being 110% badass, killing millions of monsters with a (mostly) silent protagonist, rather than revealing some traits hinting at insanity along the way.

One forum post made them realize the Male barbarian having this backstory, and the female not having it was sexist.

So now they're both GENERIC EVERYBARBARIAN

This makes me want to reinstall D2 again.

It'll be a cold day in hell before I buy D3.
