538 KB The Sutra of Forgotten Characters Anonymous 08/22/11(Mon)20:55 No.16029771
    Thus I have heard.

Once when the Games Master was on the Sacred Mountain of Origins
In the City of Unrealised Characters,
Preaching the Word of the Unwritten Campaign,
There gathered a multitude of undefined characters and class templates and aspiring players yet to create a character, both male and female,
All the people of all the ethereal planes, races, Gods and Demons,
    To hear the Sacred Law.
Around the jeweled throne they gathered
    And gazed, with unwavering eyes,
At the holy face of the GM.
At this time the Games Master
    Preached the Law as follows:
‘All ye good men, women and beings of other planes of existence,
Acknowledge the debt for your first character’s compassion,
Acknowledge you debt for your first template’s mercy.
For the life of a player in this world
Has destiny as its basic cause,
But character and template as its immediate means of origin.’
Without a character, the player’s idea is not realized.
Without a template, the player’s ideas are not nourished.
    The spirit comes from the character’s core;
The form grows from the template.
    >> Anonymous 08/22/11(Mon)20:56 No.16029783
    >>16029771

From the time when she is called upon,
During the whole character creation process,
Being analyzed, cross-referenced and rearranged to suit,
The template is visited by suffering.
She ceases to have her customary love for lore and fluff of all descriptions,
And worries solely about providing adequately for the Player who depends upon her.
The hours are full of activity, and the minutes sufficient.
At the time of the character’s unveiling, the winds of destiny hasten it on,
    Her limits are pushed.
The character, too, trembles and is afraid.
Other characters already established to other players become worried and are distressed.
When the player realizes itself and is thrust into the world,
The boundless joy of character and template
Match that of a penurious woman
Who has found a magic jewel.

When the player utters its first action,
    The template feels born anew.
    Her character class becomes the Player’s place of rest;
    Her lore, its playground,
Her stats, its source of food.
    Her love, its very life.
Without it’s template, the player is as if naked.
Though the template seeks validation through adherence to lore,
She readily sullies her own ideals to accommodate the player.
Without the template, the player lacks direction...
    >> Anonymous 08/22/11(Mon)20:57 No.16029799
    >>16029783

The template goes to the expansion books.
She looks up new skills, gives new choices.
The character goes too, providing new weapons and items to choose.
The player needs them more than ever. It works it’s brain, shakes it’s head,
    And cries out for help.
The template and character soothe the player,
laying their worries away with their words and guidance.
For character and template, there is no greater love than this.
    When level two arrives,
The player stops clinging to the template.
But without her, he would not know that fire can burn horribly.
Without her, he would not know that a knife can cut fingers off.
    When level three arrives,
He needs not rely upon her stat readings for nourishment.
The character helps the player grow.
Without the character, he would not know that poison can kill.
Without the character, he would not know that medicine cures.
When the character goes on mission
And is presented with wondrous items,
He claims them not but puts them in his pockets
And takes it home for the player, to make him rejoice...
    >> Anonymous 08/22/11(Mon)20:58 No.16029811
    >>16029799

    The player grows.
The character gives him adventures, and is proud.
The template moulds him with her love.
They give every beautiful thing they possess to him,
Keeping for themselves only that which is old and worn or embarrassing.
The player takes a second character
And brings this stranger into the house.
    They become more distant.
The new character and the player have no time.
They go off on their own adventures.
    >> Anonymous 08/22/11(Mon)20:59 No.16029826
    >>16029811

The character and template grow old.
Their spirits weaken, their strength diminishes.
They only have their player to depend on,
Only the player to do things for them.
But the player no longer comes to them,
Neither at night nor in the daytime.
    Their room is cold.
There is no more pleasant talk.
They are like lonely guests at an inn.
A new campaign arises, and they call for their player.
Nine times in ten, he comes not,
    Nor does he consider them.
    He grows irate with them,
Saying it would be better for them to die
Than to linger on unwanted in this world.
They listen, and their hearts are filled with rage.
    Weeping, they say,
“Without us, you would not have come to be,
Without us, you could not have grown.
Is this our reward, to raise you only for you to leave us?”
    The player hates them.
In the dead of night, he leaves with his new characters,
Cursing them as he passes through the front gates.
The character and the template are heartbroken,
    And they weep bitter tears.
But they can do no more, but forlornly await the inevitable.
    They are forgotten and unloved,
What is left but to die?

    **********
If you are reading this, ask yourself: Is this me?

Who was your first character? What was their name? Class? Appearance? What was their personality? Alignment? Did they die? Did you even finish the final campaign with them?

    Can you remember at all?

But you can still make things right. Dust the character sheet. Fire up the new expansion .pdfs, and give them another go. You’ve learned so much since then. I know you could make them proud, and be the sons they always hoped you were.

    The sons they deserved.

Look deep, Anon. It’s not too late. Even if only in some small way, you can still save them.

    Please. Find your way home.

    The first character...

I guess when you've played many games with many characters, it is always left quiet in your heart.

This makes me want to ask our DM to run a game where everyone plays a revised version of their first character.

    Thank you OP.

My first character ever was a D&D 3.5 fighter, that was suppose to be a Cavalier later on. We only played two adventures, and all together, for some misterious reasons, 30% of my rolls where 1's or 2's. Klaus was supposed to be a chilvaric gentlemen, but he ended up being the comic-relief. Also tragically innefective.

One part Dwarf one part beast. Cursed with the rage of a tiger. He was never to bright but he was good in a fight. Died to a crushing trap, letting others pass.

Real first character not of childhood was a luckless Cleric. Never did to well in combat but would throw the heal that would let the hero save the day or make sure evil was held at bay.

I remember explicitly. I remember being new to the GM thing and untried and untested. With a group of friends just as new. I remember making a Character to play as well so that the three of us could have fun together. He was a Sorcerer whose only desire was to burn things and run full fledged toward his draconian heritage. He was left aside when I was able to acquire the core books but I still have what little there was of his character sheet. I've made many characters but they are never left behind I use them for the campaigns I run so that New players may meet them and get to know them. But you have reminded me that I have not yet done so for him. Thank you

i remember simon, Simon D. Wolfgang. he was a talkative, affable cleric, tall, black hair, hazel eyes. a self extention of my innerself. bad stats, i had no idea what a build was or how to make a good character. looking back at it he sucked. but he was something else. a real friend, a hero, a true paragon. first session he woke up chained up in a ship being sold into slavery, but what did he do? he broke free released the party and other slaves and led them to victory. he died saving a party member from the bbeg. gave him his ring of feather fall after pushing him out the window. didnt even bitch about the dm using his bbeg on low levels. the party didnt care either. the guy he saved became a douche. but i still love simon. still have his sheet, and the first dice i used with him; its rarely failed me since that one bad roll that made him die. i think its sad too. been meaning to frame that sheet

I remember. I remember all of them

I remeber my stupid little hythril in a stupid kids fantasy platemail niftysuit that was little more than storytales with my awesome bearded babysitter.

I remember my (if someone from the adventure company, adventure education company or reniassance adventures reads this, <3 u man) first generic elf wizard, and how he grew into a marvelous diplomat adventurer able to reach out and bridge the gap between cultures and conflicts because he was so eccentric that nobody cared where he was from. This one's to you, Zephyr. Because a kids camp with foam swords when you're, like, 9 is the best. thing. EVER.

And his later incarnation, in a new system, half trying something new, half trying to keep the good bits, after real life and company strife reared its ugly head. Badass Elf paladin. Who ended up retiring when I was older, and mentally breaking up when he realized the futility of good in the ultimate struggle of good vs evil - and fell not to evil, but to Law, and became an an Uber-lawful asshole who realized that Serious Changes needed to be made for good to win - and went out to use his long lifespan to make them with his two fists. Imirael, heart goes out to you.

Op: thank you. Everyone else, its your duty to share the tidbits you recall.

My first character was named Takar. He was a chaotic good half orc barbarian. Suited in nothing more than hide and a tarnished great sword. He fought along side a haphazard group of adventures. Takar was brave and strong rushing headlong into battle with a unsurpassed recklessness. Saving the lives of his fellow party members Takar was encased withing a bladed wall as hell fires burned his flesh, flying into a maddening rage he fell to the magical prowess of a wicked Lich. Dealing the final blow Takar fell into shock and passed into the realms a kin to Valhalla.

I honor his death; with the valor and honor I carried with him. I carry those and many more traits into the new templates and new characters. Because Takar was the DM and the Player which now sits before this screen admiring and acknowledging this post.

Aramil, Elf Wizard, who traveled the world and planes in search of as many arcane secrets as he could find so he could combat the forces of evil wherever and whenever they might show their monstrous faces. His zeal for the fight gave life to my most memorable character, Asgard Endymion, who was an ethical knight who wished to become a god so that he could lead humanity to greatness.

Aramil, you will see the light once more. You never finished your fight, and as you live, there is no evil that will stand. With your allies or alone, you will fight.

Dude, I saw them at BitGen in Baltimore while I was at Otakon. Everyone's testing their instruments normally, but when it's time for them, I hear "Danger Zone" for their test. Then they started playing.

I'm too intellectual. I think too much. There has not been one time in my entire life that I can remember where I let my emotions take hold of me fully. At least, until that night. I determined right then and there that I needed no religion. I found my gods there. Can't wait to see them and The Megas at MAGfest. But I'm taking this topic off track.

On a related note, I'd love to play a game in the setting The Protomen portray. Ever since my father passed away, I've felt that someone needs to rise to the occasion, no matter what. Even if hope must ride alone, their must be hope.

Also, YES. The world they set up is so perfectly bleak, blending the ideal amounts of dystopia, apocalyptica, western, cyberpunk, and hot blooded 80s future. It's like everything I love in one slick package.

I have not forgotten his name or face.

For I followed in the footsteps of many before me.

His name was Regdar. He was a Human Fighter. He wielded a Bastard Sword, and he was there so that there was a meatshield in the party while I DMed for my 8 year old brother.

I remember him most for cleaving a hobgoblin down. after my brother had poisoned him.

Sadly, I do NOT remember the first character I made, rather than played. He was from a free-form. I remember he traveled with a Stone Golem, and a Half-gold dragon, but he, as the straight man, has dwindled to dust.

My... I just remembered him. It feels like yesterday i player my first session of CoC, corbits house for anyone who cares.

His name was... Well i don't honestly remember. His name, and sheet, has been lost in the many transitions in my life but i remember him clear as day.
All his stats were rolled as i wasn't that creative back then. I remember in the end he ended up being a relatively strong and nimble man with dwarfism, kleptomania and osteoporosis (7hp or so), and a POW worthy a mage, but that didn't stop him.
They went to Corbit's house on request and started cheking it out. He unlocked the door to the house with his lockpick, and searched the house along with the others like a boss.
Untill they reached the basement. He failed his Dex check and fell down the stairs, sending him in a coma instantly...

Later after medical treatment and corbit long dead we got into more trouble, as it usually happens in CoC.
They survived a cultist attack, encountered a fishman and was hunted by bloodthirsty dog-like beings in a desert.
The campaign ended with the players trapped in an old prison cell, "Dorf" the only one not beaten to a pulp for once, now klaustrophobic and paranoid, and with another player in the same cell having seperation anxiety.
But he fought for their freedom. Stripping of all unnecessary clothing and rubbed him self in soap, he succeeded in squeezing him self out between the bars. A guard was half asleep in a chair at the end of the hall.
"Dorf" grapped some object lying around, and started sneaking up on the guard who had a shotgun at his side. He only had one shot at this.
And then the player with seperation anxiety shouted out in despair and agony, waking up the guard just before i was able to beat him to a pult. He managed to get a single hit at the guard which hurt him badly, but not enough to stop him from firing his shotgun.
And there he died, not more than 28 years old, haunted by eldrich horrors, killed by a shot to the chest with no bones strong enough to support the pressure. The campaign ended there...

I Honor you "Dorf", and i will do my best to remember your name

I remember you Sorgan, half orc with no class in AD&D2e. You were a clumsy brute of a man who carried your bestest friend ever and therefor your master, the gnome with no name on your shoulders as you charged at people with reckless abandon. You had only 5 intelligence but you were at least an honest fellow. I remember your noble sacrifice, your last words. "If you fellas and gals don't make it out of this place alive, what was the point of bringing me along anyways?" You died a commoner, but you live on in our memories as a champion. Those Goblins never knew just how devoted you were to your master Gnome.

I have never forgotten a single charecter I have ever made, im happy to say. But for the sake of the thread, I will detail.

Dovan was a dwarf, quietly competent and skilled in the ways of war. Gruff as many of his kind, his courage and blunt nature was enduring to his friends and infuriating to his foes. Yet though his arm was strong and his eyes were keen, he worn not by the strength of his weapon but rather by the thickness of his skin. I labored long and hard, making him as invulnerable as possible. His con was high enough to take roll with it (or an early version of it) and stacked adamantine fullplate and a fey shirt for extra DR. He had our geomancers (yes, plural, one was a druid/sorc and the other was a wizard/druid) craft him items specifically tailored to make him resistant or outright immune to magical threats.

He would take on dragons single highhandedly, and intentionally get swallowed just so they couldn't attack him directly (while he ignored the effects of their stomach thanks to DR and acid resistance). One ancient black worm was so frustrated by this tactic that he literally tore his own stomach open to get hearty Dovan out of his body, like some angry bearded tumor. The dogged fighter then won the grapple check to climb back INSIDE the dragon and stab it in the heart.

He was forced to bathe afterwards. In lava.

Musashi the Half-Elf Bard. I made him for a diceless version of D&D 3.5 that a couple of friends were running while we were wandering around during P.E. in Middle School.

He didn't get to do much - the DM was starting out, and tended to focus on the only other player. I was a new player too, so things worked out that way more or less.

He was a blank slate that never got to do anything. Later on I was forced into the GM chair for a later game we played, and found myself loving it.

Oddly enough, he's the character I'm rolling up for a friend's Pathfinder game. Only making one change - he's going to be a Gnome instead of a Half-Elf (it seems to fit the character better).

My first RP character was Pratz Strike. I wear his name to this day and I know all his stories by heart. My first pen and paper character was Kami Danshir. I still use his name from time to time and I know all his stories by heart.

First character... do video games count? Because I remember my guy from Baldur's Gate II. Technically he was my third or fourth characters, but the others were just test runs and don't count. He was a Chaotic Neutral Sorcerer named Mordred. He was a mercenary type who did things for money and glory, rather than altruism, so the alignment probably didn't fit, but I wanted the cat familiar.

All other RPGs I have played have been forum based play by posts. My first "character" was the Mekidar Republic, a nation of monogendered cyborg lizardmen in a space empires type game. I made lots of characters for the various interactions with the other player's nations. My favourite one was a Grand Admiral in the Space Force, a member of the small population of human refugees existing in the Republic. He was a gay, blond pretty boy with a fully cybernetic body.

My first true and independent character was Inquisitor Kutuzov in a WH40k game. I don't remember the system, but it wasn't any of the official ones. It was very rules light, and you got extra dice for describing your actions. A wushu variant, maybe? It was just me and the GM, so I actually stated out an entire retinue:
-Kutuzov was a former Imperial Guard Colonel. He got recruited into the Inquisition after a botched daemonic possession turned him into a beta level psyker. In reality he was still possessed, but the daemon was dormant and Kutuzov is "stealing" its powers. The daemon would only ever fully awaken if he died, but on the edge of death the guy could tap into its powers enough to turn into localized warp storm at the cost of a lot of chaos taint. Non-canon as fuck, but we didn't care.
-The Interrogator was a former Arbites guy with a sniper rifle, also the GMPC.
-Kutuzov's girlfriend was another psyker, a former death cultist recruited into his retinue. I think she used double pistols.
-Finally, there was the pet Ogryn functioning as the heavy. He had a machinegun and a big machete.

Ah I remember my first Character. He was a dwarf by the name of Olaf. There was no finer Cleric in all of Flatmeet and it's surroundings. He was a nice fellow even though he was addicted to quite a few substances. He wasn't very smart, but he was wise. I remember when every one else from the party went on to live out their epic destinies he decided to open up a tavern. I miss him dearly, I really do.

I know all their stories by heart.
Daniel Shame, the blond shootfighter who rose to prominence in the Japanese Regional MMA circuit. Gloria Mayburn ess'Ryoki, the brown haired tabledancing hapkido fighter who married an oni. Raijin Moto, the Unicorn bushidokan master. Lt. Tammy Chandlers, Special Forces Combat instructor and close combat specialist. X'iang Tsun Wei Han. Ja'keel Barneau and Chali Yardness, best friends and the next great rap act. Harold Stevens, cowboy and motorcycle aficianado. Orchard Alixandir, prettyboy with weak self esteem, natural bright pink hair, and the ability to take more damage than most reinforced underground bunkers. Trance Strike, Pratz's cloned and slightly psychotic brother, built like a slab of meat, who wields a maul and has a connection to nature. Rosetta, the ice kitsune, mentally broken and twisted because the discovery of her powers lead to her world becoming a ball of ice. Puce the Succubus, retired mass murderer mousegirl villain, Frederick de Palma, mayor of Pagoda City, Savate enthusiast, and bound to a devil that has an interest in keeping him young (as much as he hates it).

I don't remember his name, but he was a half-elf druid.

Wound up other-half-dragon before the GM quit and I had to sit in the Big Chair. Was pretty cool.

Clesion, the illumian factotum, who lived for knowledge and trying to keep her crazy group alive while keeping the secret that she was a he. Binary Rain, the rocket launcher carrying blue haired android girl, who was abandoned on a space station. Will Asheville, the 11th generation Ventrue who, despite fighting the Sabbat armed only with a pistol, was the only one of his coterie not to die. Lu Everett, the telekinetic ex-rifleman who had his death faked so the Black Ops boys could kidnap him, but he escaped before they could ferret him away and lived on the lam for years. Shurry Laker, the maid-dating, red trenchcoat wearing, sniper rifle carrying human amongst a team of mutants and misfits. Almond Bryson, the result of a one-night stand between the greatest thief in the world and an American girl in Europe, later discovered and tagged by his father's compatriots to take his dad's place. Dr. Richard Beltway, Doctor of Explosives (With Signed And Notarized Will And Last Testament) And Firearms. Notable for romancing one of the few remaining necromancers in the world before they left to create their army to take over.

A little more about Mordred. I did really well with picking my spells, so by the end game the guy was a walking murder machine of murder. I think he accounted for more kills than the other five party members combined. Early on the party was: Minsc, Korgan, Viconia, Yoshimo, Edwin, my character, and his cat. Later I replaced Yoshimo with Imoen. In Throne of Bhaal I pretended Minsc went home and replaced him with Sarevok. There was a certain satisfaction about having my siblings around to muderate everything that got in our way, though I was doing the most of the killing: Amulet of Power+Robe of Vecna+Improved Aclarity+Time Stop = I Win Forever. That has always been the best BGII playthrough, and Mordred has always been my favourite character in that game. There's just a certain magic about the first time you get to see and do all the cool shit.

3.5ed NE level 2 human ranger. A mercenary who doubled as a seeker of knowledge, for knowledge is power.

Harley Kettlebound, halfling factotum and involuntary pit explorer. ("PULL ME UP! PULL ME UP!") Lawrence Norlic, the God of Revenge worshipping alchemist. Mason, the warblade, and the only sword-swinger in a group of diplomats. Sierra, the soulknife, bitten and scared in a medieval zombie apocalypse in a miles-long megacity. Felix Raeford, gnomish illusionist, who scared off an entire pack of orcs by thinking they were flanked and under assault. Zina, the undead warrior under the goddess of love, who followed the heroes around to protect them and eat a brain or two. Lien, the panda martial artist, who tried her best to save the paladin before he leapt into the oncoming drow below the group. Nohea Makaiwi ("Handsome Eyes of the Bones"), a.k.a. Me'e, the Hawaiian superhero born at the opening of World War II. Zoose the peasant, driven by a need to kill as many of the oncoming army as he can to make up for the loss of his wife and child. Lodi Resonin, hacker extraordinaire, one-time killer for the Mob and trying to keep as far away from them as he can.

And this isn't even thinking about the mass of freeform characters I've had. I remember them all. I log them all. I note them all. I make a point to remember every. goddamn. one. So yes, I remember my characters. Don't you DARE try to insinuate I don't remember my characters, if I can't remember anything else. I honor them, and none of them are left alone and wanting.

My first character was called Lord Cats (don't ask how I chose the name), a sorcerer-knight who was a member of this organization loyal to the warlord Abraham Lincoln. The campaign was a mix of real-world and fantasy elements, with time travel and nearly anything being possible (to the point where there was an underwater Nazi city with jedi-style assassins and robots). The players were divided into two groups, Group A whose goal was to dominate anything and everything, and Group B whose goal was to fuck up Group A's plans and stop them from messing up shit.

My character decided to join Group A since they had less numbers. He was a megalomaniac kinda-evil son of a bitch who was ambitious as hell yet still loyal to his friends. In the first couple of sessions he managed to help crush a steampunk army and seized some space empire's flagship, shortly gaining the loyalty of the remaining crew/soldiers.

However Lord Cats eventually got betrayed by a major NPC within his former organization, who had Group A captured and murdered my character with an energy blade.

So he died and went to hell, where he met with Satan. Being the power hungry bastard he was, my character made a deal with Satan; he gets brought back to life and he will act as the Dark Prince's vanguard in the mortal realm. He agreed and brought Cats back to life.

My character got some awesome abilities including being able to summon hellfire, which he almost immediately used to burn down his former organization's base. He then tracked down the traitor and beat the NPC so hard all of his limbs were broken and his face unrecognizable.

The character eventually turned from ambitious asshole to fucking psychopath. Lord Cats utilized his unholy Satanic powers to the fullest, murdering anyone who got in his way and corrupting any who could survive fighting him. And he was a tough motherfucker. He was an awesome swordsman, had sorcerer spells and could now call forth the powers of hell itself.

He formed his own faction by confronting groups of mooks and telling them they served him now, then butchering anyone who disagreed. A small army of mercenaries, scum and generic enemies by his side he proceeded to carve out a kingdom from him and Group A. Group B would always try and go for Lord Cats first in battles, most of the time he was fighting of two or three PCs at a time.

So Cats soon made a name for himself as "Most Powerful Warrior in the Realm" after managing to kill Hades. Yes, my character killed FUCKING HADES. He also did some other awesome shit, like taking on an army battalion by himself, slaying a few giant space monsters and personal killing at least two of the campaign's BBEGs.

    T'was an awesome character.

Blackthorne, a Dwarven Rogue with one eye and a penchant for daggers. He died while crawling across a room to save the party wizard that had been surprised by a Dark Naga. Even though he didn't have to do it, he stood up and took the lightning bolt meant for the Cleric.

Blackthorne you died a hero, you shall be born anew and given proper respect.
