I think elements of Pathfinder's Magus class need some serious retooling. A player from my group built a Magus, and I believe he's broken the system thoroughly. His presence in a CR appropriate encounter renders other players moot, even in a serious knockdown drag-out. I let him play a Magus, because he'd just lost a beloved Rogue to a stone golem - he NEVER should have gone toe to toe.

Also, we were lacking in solid DPS , as the other players had built a diplomacy Cleric of Cayden Cailean, a defend the party and counterattack Paladin, and blocker summoning Lore-Master Wizard (fuck yeah, celestial Ankylosaurus!) They're pretty rad. It was really beginning to show, because the party was spending most of their time healing.

Magus player selected the Bladebound Archtype, which gives you an intelligent sword as a class feature, all good and well. He picked a scimitar. Improved Critical is appropriate to the character, as the weapon is kind of his shtick. The Magus feature Spell Strike seemed cool (I stab the guy, I cast a spell simultaneously) and I really had no trouble with him selecting the Magus Maximize Spell ability at 12th level. Need I continue, or can you see where this is going?

Pathfinder has the same problem as 3.5. If you're a fighter, all you have to do is make strength checks to throw people/pit fiends/dragons through stone walls whenever they disagree with you; none of the other classes does anything worthwhile. Some idiots like to play casters because they think being able to resurrect someone at the cost of buttloads of XP is a good idea, when, if they'd gone fighter instead, they could just pick up a boulder and use it to block meteor swarms dodge-ball style.

Fucking fighters are too powerful in 3.5.

Yes, but they're ultimately the same. Hell, in 3.x/PF/4e, just divide your average Damage Per Round (DPR) by 6, and that's technically your DPS.

I don't give a fuck about the term, but thinking about organized class rolls in that way just irks me. Fuck it, I'll discuss it with you.

Your problem isn't the Magus, it's a combination of the player and your over-permissiveness as a DM. Pathfinder is still rooted in 3.5, and despite some efforts, can still be broken. Paladins, Clerics, Wizards, Sorcerers, Druids, and the Magus can all be as much if not more ridiculous in terms of the damage they can dish out and general durability/utility. Magus doesn't need retooling IMO. I like Pathfinder, but it suffers some of the same problems 3.5 does - namely, vastly different power levels between classes and different characters. This is mostly something that is best handled between DM and player. If you're set on being permissive - design challenges to let the other players shine.

    >stop liking what I don't like

Pathfinder does, to a lesser extent, use certain mechanics that mirror MMO combat. Damage mitigation, taunting to pull an enemy's attention from an ally, etc.

Rounds are, static, 6 seconds. The term applies. You want to call it damage per round? Fine. But DPS communicates the idea adequately in three characters.

That said, I had the party setting up an ambush for an Umbral Dragon. They had time to prep, a squad of crack-shots concealed in an elevated position, wards, the works. And the cleric crafted a superb letter to taunt the dragon - brilliant rolls, combined effort, the player wrote it all out on paper.

And lest you get the idea the paladin was being underhanded, he's a Paladin of Sarenrae, and the dragon is a known servant of Rovagug who fought DIRTY, killing defenseless family members and friends of the PCs to demoralize and intimidate them. The oath the player took reads, "The best battle is a battle I win. If I die, I can no longer fight. I will fight fairly when the fight is fair, and I will strike quickly and without mercy when it is not."

Assuming attack rolls 1-20 out of 20 attack rolls, and consistent damage rolls across the board, a scimitar deals 69 expected damage, while a bastard sword deals 110. These assume slightly below-average (i.e., 3 out of 6 for a scimitar and 5 out of 10 for a bastard sword) damage rolls. Scimitars have thusly only 63% the damage output of bastard swords.

So the party steals the Dragon's most prized possession, leaves the "thanks for macguffin, schmuck" letter with a silk rose, a small box of chocolates, and a small stuffed doll tailored to look like the dragon, but with an idiotic expression on his face. The letter also details where to find them.

Blind with rage and not too terribly wise, the dragon hastes and teleports himself and two allies to the ambush location to fuck them up.

Magus with the initiative takes a five foot step, full attack, Maximized spell, and uses an ability for two points of his arcane pool that drops the dragon to it's touch AC for a short while. I realize the dragon's touch AC is 5.

The Magus crits, and deals 147 damage with the first hit, bypassing DR because his damage counts as magic. Subsequent attacks total to 128 damage, and the Paladin has thrown down two uses of smite evil to grant the ability to adjacent allies.

Ancient wyrm. Supposed to be a knockdown dragout, a test of skilled players with a tactical advantage against a vastly superior foe. The combat literally lasted three rounds, and the main combatant was dead during round one before other players could even act.

I respectfully asked the player to turn the sheet in, make a new character, and banned his particular character build from the game. Player didn't seem surprised. Is this a reasonable adjudication?

what spell did he maximize? I can imagine a few choices, but the real issue is the paladin's aura of justice - +2 damage to enemy for every level for first hit, +1 on all others and bypass DR +crit is already doing a shitload of damage, the spellstrike just makes it crazy. the synergy on that is dangerous as hell, but paladins with keen or improved crit on 17-20 weapons are monsters in combat against that sort of enemy anyways.

Assuming a Strength of 0 and no magic or feats.

Yes, at nothing but dice, the bastard sword looks bigger, but if we add a static number behind it, like, say, +12, it becomes the scimitar dealing 15X20, or 300, versus the b-sword's 17X20, or 340. Scimitar gets 3 crits for an extra 35, or 335, b-sword gets 2 for 357. Oh, and improved crit adds 3 crits to scimitar, 2 to b-sword, changing gap to 380 and 391.

This gap steadily decreases as the static number goes up, until at high levels *the scimitar outdamages the bastard sword*.

    >>16103338
I ran the same math, and wound up with different numbers: 85 expected on the scimitar, 110 on the bastard sword. And ok, that would imply still only a 77% efficiency-- but if you actually pare down the damage expected per attack, you're looking at approximately 4.25 to 5.5.

So yes, the expected damage is about 1 higher per attack. But... who cares?

Wait, why is this an issue again?

I figured that would be the spell, since it's the backbone of the class - I'm sure he intensified it so it went to 10d6 instead of 5d6, but that's just 66 damage from a 4th or 5th level spell slot, which isn't crazy impressive - it's just the method of delivery that made it awesome. I think you're judging him unfairly, especially since it can't have been an easy roll to overcome the dragon's SR.

Dragons have spell resistance. Assuming ancient umbral dragon and 12th level party, the shocking grasp would've had 15% chance of working. Even with Greater spell penetration it would be 35% chance. That can be boosted some more, but it's a reasonable assumption that it had a high chance of not working.

147 first hit + 126 subsequent hits + 44 from Smite Evil = OP by my standards. The Magus get access to heavy armor, uses the second most powerful base attack bonus progression, and becomes more ludicrous with every level. It allows a gish to one-round-rape a monster with a 38 AC and CR 19.

Mt group has a level 6 Magus and he is quiet the clever player.
When I have a fight ready to go, if I think he'll just mow over the big baddy there, I normally plan for it. If the fight is kinda rough on the party, I let it play out. But if the enemies get wiped in the first turn from some nonsense. (Not just lucky rolls, mind you.) I head with Plan B. The group gets more xp and I have some more fun.

Also this is random, but if someone were to use Stone Shape to cover a 10ft wide hole that was made with Create Pit. When Create Pit's time is up, would the creatures inside just be crushed to death?

Not at all, but that would have been a much less astonishing WTF kind of victory. Also, Coup de Gras
is not as simple in Pathfinder - you autohit and crit on a Coup de Gras, and if the defender survives the damage, he makes a fort save of 10 + deamage dealt or dies. Precision damage applies to this check, though, so a rogue / witch would be an effect team at this tactic.

We play with other systems. Deadlands, Shadowrun, GURPs, L5R. I'm more familiar with d20 mechanics, and enjoy Paizo's adjustments and additions to the existing system. Also, my game has been the longest running in our group, because the players really feel involved.

I may be thinking about this the wrong way - not all problems can be solved by slaying the shit out of someone, and the Magus does have significant weaknesses.

These are friends, and we play for the social value of the game. They're not all very experienced, and they're not all sound tactical thinkers, but they're good friends and they're engaged by the storyline. That's good enough for me.

I'm torn between a "kick people into a huge fucking pit" judge-dredd shield-fighter who tanks and battlefield-controls (I AM THE LAW), or some sort of intimidator-dude who uses those intimidation feats to scare the piss out of people.

Either build has a backup weapon in the form of a +2 Merciful Spiked Gauntlet, that crackles with black lightning when active. For those rare situations when someone needs to be taken in alive.

Um. Wow, guys. I can't see how any of what you've said is fulfilling or meaningful. Trolling is, by definition, only satisfying for sociopaths. You must lead lives that are, in whichever way, unbearably painful and lonely. I'm very, very sorry for the hand you've been dealt.

I'm of the opinion that every system can be broken when the GM is not at least cognizant of his player's true capabilities. Accordingly, I'm going to copy my players character sheets, study their capabilities, and adjust encounters accordingly to give them a cinematic, engaging challenge. Which will simply require a LOT of time.

I'm still relatively new to Pathfinder myself, but I'm learning, and I enjoy the system. Wish me luck. Thanks for your input, and goodnight.

Darth, I know this means practically nothing, and you've probably already left the thread, but my answer to how Pathfinder can be broken:

I can make a 15th level sorceror, using basic, no-brainer feats, that has a 17.5% chance of "killing" a Neothelid in a single turn. He has a 15.4% chance to do the same to a phoenix. And a 32% chance to do it to the party fighter (neither character has any items, I gave the Fighter great fort AND iron will, as well as both 22 Con and 16 wis)

He can cast the spell to do this 6 times a day, and it's not his best spell.

So, if he led each fight he got into with a CR 15 creature with (Stilled Baleful Polymorph), he's likely to win every 6th fight or so with a single move.

    I miss that mod.

I don't have anything against namefags, samefags, or people who don't like the same edition I like. But I really, really want this to remain a blue board in more than just color.

I could go elsewhere, sure. But other boards just don't stack up. Character art, considerate system analysis, useful advice for GMs and players, the best copypasta on the internet, i don't even need other boards anymore: intelligen/tg/entlemen get shit done.

And that also applies to porn.

Sorceror with the Arcane background representing his family's patriarch "modifying" his lineage with transmutation.

Specializes in transmutation spells, has Spell Focus, Greater Spell Focus, Spell Pen, and Greater Spell Pen.

Gave him a Charisma of 22 by level 15.

His Stilled Baleful Polymorph has a save DC of 26.
The rest is simple math: odds he'll beat SR, times Odds it will fail Fort, times odds it will fail Will.

    >>16104446
I hate to point out to someone so civil that that is just a further argument FOR Pathfinder being broken.

A monster of your CR is supposed to tax your abilities at least a little. This guy is using his second-best level of spells to attack a creature of his level.

Also, this character is practically nude, so it's entirely possible the odds are better.

I played 3rd edition & 3.5 for ten years. They were my first roleplaying games. And I loved them.

Now I look back and can see that the mechanics involved are so easily exploited. I'm not here to say you shouldn't play PF, or that your group will have problems, but just to point out.

    >> Anonymous 08/29/11(Mon)05:12 No.16104687
    >>16104614
Civil was perhaps a strong word. I chose to read his post in a British accent, so it seemed polite to me, other than the dig at you.

He casts it stilled A) to prevent bindings stopping him, B) to get a +1 to save DC, and C) So that all he does is snap "That's enough out of you!" and the enemy is a mouse.

It's worth noting that this ISN'T his most optimized choice for this, since he'd be more effective just casting Flesh to Stone, which doesn't have a second saving throw, so his odds are ( 60% chance of connection times 55% chance of failed Fort = ) 33% on neothelid, and (60% chance of connection times 45% failed fort = ) 27% on the phoenix.

Alas, I must to bed now, but that's the kind of thing you can find if you look hard enough.

    No.
It was an ambush, not a stand up fight.
If the dm ambushes the party with a CR encounter of their level you can wipe the floor with them in a round or two, fighting in water comes to mind, If the party is ready and waiting with spells cast and an attack plan an equal or even somewhat higher CR should be fairly easy. An ancient dragon should not have been lured into a fight so easy.

Player insta-kills my carefully crafted boss, WAH.
I see a DM that forgot one of the greatest rules. Don't ever assume the run of a fight, players will find a way around you. A good SR check for him, a bad Fort roll for you, and a disintegrate spell could have done the same thing. Would you ban spellcasters for it?

Anyone who cares about the enjoyment of other places in their party does not fully optimise their character unless everyone is fully optimising their characters.

To answer your second question, no clue who Jim was until I googled him a week or so ago. Not sure what the problem was, but then again I lurk 95% of the time and ignore anything that doesn't look interesting. I'm mostly here for the pictures and potential character/plot seeds for me to work with as a DM.

To answer your first question, also a no, but I don't even notice someone's tripfaging until huge quantities of buttfrustrated pop up like this one. TBH, it looks to me like you just decided to troll Darth's ass hard and succeeded beyond your wildest dreams.
