You are a slave trader based out of Narleen, a great harbour city on the east coast of the Gand Country, a flourishing new land of fuedal barons and mercantile courts, where intrigue abounds. Slave trading is a highly sort after commission, only licensed individuals approved by the Monarch of Nova Leon can enter such a trade, and has just begun the slow but certain process of falling into fixed dynastic lines.

Your father was a slave trader, as was his father, and the one before that, who had been born ironically to a slave woman of Old Nubia. The black thread of your great grand mother still runs strong in you, your skin has a dusky appearance and your hair sits in tight curls, with a broad nose everything about your appearance proclaims your mixed heritage.

You are Estavo Zahak. Slave Trader, third class. Licensed in the procurement and sale of cheap labour both foreign and domestic. You have ambition untested, contacts in the ancient realms beyond the Bitter Sea, and a crew of slave hunters eager to work.

You are licensed to raid foreign settlements, though you understand failure will not be excused. You are licensed to convert debts owed to years spent in servitude.

You are not yet licensed to deal in pleasure slaves or gladiators, not yet. You are not yet allowed to sit on the Trader Council, a small name for such a fearsome group of slave traders and politicians. You are still required to serve at the disposition of your local Captain and elder brother, Esteban Zahak, but you find the leash has loosened in recent years.

The rules are quick and simple. 1d100 to decide an action, highest number of first three rolls takes priority, then 1d100 to decide how that action plays out, the lower the better.

You have a steady income from overseas trade, but domestic trade is wanning. A new group has muscled into your territory, calling themselves The Just Brothers Of Heavenly Delight. They have been raiding the native tribes more often than your father ever advised, and press ganging the drunken riff-rff of the docks, or so you have been told, and whisking them back to the Old Nations of Uropa to serve in the decadent courts of the inbred Imperials.

Your slave hunters have also brought word of the semi-legendary Jericho, a haven for run-away slaves far to the north, hidden in the swamps of Sin-Louis. Any man who could crack that nut would strike a powerful blow against the growing resistance in the north to the slave trading south.

With challenges aplenty you check your rapier in its scabbard, correct the chain of office around your neck, and head out into the busy streets of Narleen to start the day.

First order of business, will you focus on the Just Brothers, or look into this information your hunters have brought you?

You head to the office of your elder brother Esteban. As a second class merchant he has the right to procure pleasure slaves, and that is evident from the line of chained men and women that lounge in the courtyard of his building. Of all different races they have only one unifying theme, stuning beauty. A literal fortune surrounds you as you wind your way through the clamour. A fortune you know is wasted, as Esteban rarely sends the cream of the crop on, instead greedily keeping them at his country manse for personal use.

You spot your brother Captain talking with the commander of his slave-hunters, a giant Nubian who looked very much like a pirate. Of course, the polite term in Narleen was 'procurer'.

"Second group hit this week, left poor Coolie with a shattered skull and Juan with out the use of his feet. That's two good men that won't be replaced easily," the large Nubian growled, "we need to hit back hard, or there will be trouble."

"Trouble?" you inquire, "Just the trouble I was looking to solve, leave this riff-raff to me brother."

Esteban gives you a mocking look. "If the young peacock thinks he's ready to be a tiger, go right ahead. But don't think father will approve of blood on the streets."

He walks off, leaving you in the company of the Giant Nubian.

He seizes you up and gives a dismissive snort. "Master Zahak, I'll be waiting for you at the Mermaid's Cunny. The Just Brothers are said to be making a move on it tonight. Bring your men, we'll need them."

From the stories you've heard the Just Brothers are little better than pirates raiding the alley ways of Narleen. They export to Old Uropa, and import cheap war captives, half starved war orphans and unlucky travellers.

What local trade they do is considered poor quality even by the meanest of standards, but they provide in large bulk cheaply, for plantation work. Unskilled labour is the bread and butter of all the local families, and it isn't just your family that has been taking a hit.

    >>16266407
Slave licenses are given out by the Royal Court of Nova Leon. As a novice of the Zahak family you have been granted the lowest of the licenses, only time, money and a display of skill (or brown nosing the politicios of Leon) will get you the next level of licensing.

The men under your commander is a force of slave-hunters thirty strong. Commanded by an ex-gladiator named Orion, he has been a trusted family officer for decades. While you know your men to be competent, you also know there is safety in numbers.

Heading to your own office, you give the one-eyed old man a purse of thirty Leonine stars (half your weekly allowance) and disposition to hire on new, but temporary, fighters.

Considering the reputation of the Just Brothers it does not take him long or cost him much to procure an extra thirteen street toughs and dock workers, most carrying axe handles and tanning sticks in place of proper weapons. It only cost you about ten stars, and Orion retrns the purse promptly.

You now have a force of some forty-three men, both toughened regulars and eager hire-ons. The temporary commisions will last a month. Documents are signed as best as the toughs are able. A badge, the red star of Zahak, is handed out.

You are very familiar with the 'stock' Esteban trades in. They are usually young men and women, some almost too young. The prettiest is a Nubian girl, a tall, graceful figure with a fearful but determined cast to her expression. No doubt she would be spirited away to your brother's manse, perhaps with the young, wide hipped, honey blond Nord-lander girl and the youthful, dark curled Leonine boy. His tastes change often, and he likes a broad range to sample from.

The youngest of the group, a pair of starved identical twins no more than nine, marked with the curse of albinism, would be sent for training before being put up for sale. You would judge them to be too young to be put on the market, and expect purchase from none but the most depraved.

Those sort were only worth dealing with when they paid very well, and 'very' discreetly.

    Back.
    -

There are three other Slave Trading families in Narleen. The Samhainn are a Nordern bunch, recently established with a line in gladiators. They are often in competition with the older, more established Lupin family, an old Leonine line of great pedigree and political power. Both provide fighters for the Grand Arena, a spectacular dome at the heart of Narleen that sees great tournaments and events year round, often drawing tourists from all over the Gand Country, even visiting dignitaries from Old Uropa. They also supply the pit fighters who entertain the bordering communities and more low scale fighting dens.

In short, they don't get along.

The other family, and the one yours most directly competes with in terms of pleasure slaves and menial labour, are the Ricatti. Not so much a family as a band of Independents or a Union, they have been holding a grudge against the Zahak family ever since your grandfather, Charlemagne Zahak, split off to form his own dynasty. To them you are viewed as a line of traitors and sell outs. They are easily the politically weakest of the four families, but they make up for it by dipping their toes in more illegal means, such as ransoming hostages and illegal narcotics. Of course, no body can prove it.

They all deal in plantation workers however, and as much as they hate each other they hate the new comers even more.

    Which will you approach first?

    Perhaps.

The Nordern bunch are, predictably, established in the northern part of town. The Flower District is called so because of its many perfumers, the streets are linned and the air choked with the smell of them. It helps mask the smell of shit coming from the sewers, a stench that permeates the rest of the city. Dandies with slender blades escorted young women of high birth around the district, keeping one arm around the girls' shoulder, the other on the hilt of their rapiers. Some others escorted veiled courtesans, highly paid slaves with a great deal of autonomy. There was little horse traffic in this district, and very little sign of the Narleen City Watch, a hired band of mercenaries that oversaw the enforcement of the Aristocratic Courts' laws.

The Saimhann offices were easy to spot. The building was walled, and a pair of massive Nord-lander guards stood at attention in the sweltering summer heat. They carried long hafted battle axes and wore a grade of armour rarely seen outside the Royal Court, tightly knitted maille with half helms with masks that hid their faces.

You are allowed to enter with a cursoury nod, and the inner courtyard reveals someone you are quite happy to see.

Johann Wolfsburg is a man close to your own age, if a little older. He is short, squat, and ugly as sin, with a scar along his face that twisted his lips into a permanent rictus. A slave stood at his side, a tall dusky skinned native women with a collar around her neck. He spoke quickly in the Nordic tongue, a language completely beyond you, while overseeing the stock.

Those slaves that lounged about who were not warriors yet, would be soon, or become fodder for the gory spectacle of the Arena.

    Johann beckons you over.

"What brings you here Zahak?" he asks, cold blue eyes measuring you up and down.

"A proposition," you reply, "The Just Brothers have attacked our people, and stolen trade from all of us. I mean to deal with them, and my Captain has given me leave to do so."

johann considers the offer, but not long. "If its blood they want, its blood they will get. But I cannot get my hands dirty without speaking with my Jarl first. Take Ulrik however, the man needs the exercise." He clicked his fingers and the dusky woman left, soon returning with what you at first took to be a giant golden bear.

"Go with our friend kill his enemies," Johann commanded. Ulrik nodded, and moves beside you obediently. you note the collar around his neck, and the brace of throwing axes at his hip, the bear hide wrapped around his shoulders, and the dull look in his eyes.

When you leave he comes with you, like a well trained dog.

A shrewd idea. Your first stop before heading to te Mermaid's Cunny is the local Watch-house. You know where it is from many a youthful transgression, and are intimately familiar with its cold stone cells. A young man on watch, a hook nosed mixed native wearing the blue livery and pot helm of the Watch, gives you a respectful nod as you enter.

The current force of the local constabulary mostly is composed of foreigners from the outlying regions of Narleen. Not to keep out corruption, but to keep it under the domain of Phillipe Atois, the current benefactor the Watch and lord of the lands most of its members come from.

Phillipe was in that day, a rare occurence. Even rarer that he is wearing the livery of his office, the blue tunic and silver anchor of the Narleen Watch. He is a grey haired gentleman and sometime poker opponent of your father.

His smile seems warm when he spots you, but it soon slips away as you inform him of your plans.

"If any damage to local business is done, repayment will be coming from Zahak coffers. That includes paying for funeray arrangements and the like."

You agree on terms for non-inteferance and payment for damages, desperately hoping very little of collateral damage is incurred. Taking your leave, you make a line for the Cunny, where you find Orion and his men waiting with Esteban's giant Nubian.

You know the Just Brothers are established out of the docks, keeping headquarters on the ship 'God's Caress'. You know they have men running the streets at all hours, and a psuedo-office set up in the 'Pearl Plucker', a third rate pleasure house not too far from the Cunny.

Proceed to the shit kicking, or make one last check for preperations?

Thirty-Nine men, counting the Nubian and Ulrik, you proceed to the Plucker with a determined stride. Its only three doors down and a man sitting outfront ducks inside with a terrified expression. Its the middle of the day, and the dock is busy, but the sight of a large gang of armed men soon clears the path and brings most activity to a screeching halt.

You enter the Plucker to find it abandoned of all but a few whores, who were in the corner trying not to shit themselves. You demand to know where the Brothers are, and one of the whores points a quivering finger up the flight of stairs.

Before you can get up the stairs a thunderclap rings out, the loud burst of gunshot from above stairs. A nervous trigger finger has alerted you to the fact they have muskets, a rare thing in the Gand Country that had only just begun to see regular use in the Royal Army.

Its unexpected, but you hear the fearsome reputation of the weapon is greatly exagerated. Before you can make any orders however, the street toughs charge up the flight. More of the loud bursts of gun fire rang out, and screams of pain and the sound of battle began, you draw your rapier and head up the stairs, your men with you.

One has half his skull missing, your fine dark boots squealching as you step in his brain matter, slopped across the floor boards like spilled wine.

The Brothers have the corridor well blocked, three men abreast with buckler and rapier holding back the force of ruffians as men behind them reload their long, cumbersome muskets.

The Brothers are all dressed in white tunics with a green serpent on the breast, a uniform more fitting a Temple Order than a band of slavers.

you point and your men move, charging down the corridor to reinforce the ruffians, the large Nordern ulrik leading the way, a throwing axe in either hand.

He sends one of with an almost casual over-hand through. One of the rapier armed Brothers fall, axe lodged into his collar bone. his head is crushed with the blow of an axe handle, and the line is broken. Ulrik pushes through, squaring off against one of the rapier armed gentlemen. His axes moving blinding fast, and wear the head once was, now a messy stump gushing blood.

The rest are over run in quick order, and Orion presents you with a captured musket, grinning proudly.

One of the musket men groans in pain, not yet dead as he tries to hold in his intestines.

Instead he's stuck tending to the battle-scratches and saddle-sore complaints of a bunch of slave-hunters. He's never too far from the fighting, and he comes up quickly when summoned.

"Guts are out, nothing I can do but ease yer pain brother," he said, producing from his pouch a muddy looking crystal. "Eat this and you'll have pleasant dreams all the way to paradise, but only if you tell the master here what he wants."

"Tell me where you got these muskets?" You ask, putting your hand on Ben's shoulder.

"Fuck your whore mother," was the only thing the musketeer said as he spits in your face.

While you are questioning the musketeer you send your men to search the rooms. They return shortly with some ledgers and a map or two, but not as much as you hoped. You can see from the notes that an expidition had ventured into the swamplands a week ago and should be back in several days, but there is no recording of where the arrival point is or the holdings for their captured stock.

You decide to make your argument a bit more forceful. Clamping down on your nausea, you grab his spilled guts and grip them firmly in hand, pulling them further out of his stomach by the fraction of an inch. He shudders and almost passes out, but Ben rouses him.

"Tell me what I want to know dog, or we will find out how far I can stretch these gut."

It was too much, he threw up violently and began babbling all he knew, from the number of muskets they had aboard the Caress (a dozen and two, as he phrased it) to the number of men, some twenty warriors and as many slave crew.

The muskets had been a gift from Duke Jean of Ancient Leon in Old Uropa, and the Brothers had been given the task of seeing to his interests covertly in Gand Country, to what purpose he couldn't say.

They had a ship in every port city, with more headed over. The Caress had just been the first to arrive, and the Grand Master of the Ship, Gerard, had been keen to make their presence known.

He claims that is all he knows, and you can tell he is being honest. Ben hands him the crystal, which he swallows gratefully. It did not take long for the narcotic to put him to sleep, and help him pass away.

The man you spotted remains, looking almost sulky. Esteban is in the courtyard speaking with a dignified looking older man in a well cut ensemble that included a fashionable half-cape thrown over one shoulder.

Your brother takes one look at your blood spattered figure and almost faints. When he manages to regain some composure you inform him of the day's deeds. By the end he is spitting in rage.

"We are not gangsters, brother!" he spits, "Our grandfather was a gangster, we are not! The amount of damage this has done. We will have to send gifts to every merchant on the docks, and to all the Houses. Even those Union cunts will be expecting payment after you turned their fucking brothel into a charnel house!"

"Easy Esteban, easy." the elder man said, putting a hand to your Captain's shoulder. "The mistakes of an overeager youth. I shall see the Council does nothing but sing his praises, as a patriot perhaps, or civil defender."

The giant Nubian moves from your group back to Esteban's, thumbing his nose in respect to you as he passes, a large grin splitting his face.

    Well about that....

I should also point out that slave traders aren't necessarily slave owners, and while they do own some other businesses that use slaves, they don't own too many for fear of alienating their customer base.

The slave traders are the middle man, and they want to stay the middle man and make a lot of cash rather than risk having their licenses revoked and drawing the ire and jealousy of other merchant families.

The Brothel Keepers and Gladiator Leagues wouldn't want it, and they have a lot of pull amongst the aristocracy. Ship Captains, who are otherwise hired to ship livestock and aren't always licensed Slavers would fear for their livelihood as well.

However, some Slavers think this is rubbish, and there are a number who believe they should take over as full time operators of the Brothels and Leagues, amongst other areas of interest. The Ricatti Union is the only one to actively fight these strictures, and only because the brothel owning members of the Union, technically speaking, aren't involved in the slave trading aspect of the Union. Its a loop hole that might be closed soon, if your grand pappy gets his way.

Buying a brothel would be fine, though it would need to be made a personal investment on your part and not a 'family' run establishment. If you catch my drift.

Duke Jean of Ancient Leon is the brother to Emperor Constantine of The Uropa League and King of Ancient Leon, and a 'cousin' to King Louis of Nova Leon. Narleen is the largest Port City in Nova Leon, to clarify, which is just one of many nations in the Gand Country. Narleen is given greater independence than most other cities, and is allowed the home rule of an Aristocratic Council. Mostly because King Louis is very fond of the city.

The relationship between the two countries used to be much more hostile, but over the last fifty years have become much friendlier due to close cultural ties and treaties of mutual protection.

Leonine stars are the main currency of Gand Country. They break down into silver stars and gold stars. Silver stars are nicknamed pennies or tins, because little actual silver goes into them. Fifteen silver stars make one gold star. You'd spend silvers on most common things, food, inexpensive lodging, and the foulest of whores. Gold stars, which are usually just called 'leonine stars' is the money of the upper classes.

You are entitled to sixty gold stars a week from the family account. This is a lot of money for even nobles to carry, a mark of your wealth and status as a scion of House Zahak. Your family is considered extravagant, mostly as a consequence of the youth of the line.

Total income of the entire family stretches into the tens of thousands, possibly hundreds, but that barely puts you on an even footing when it comes to the other major Slave Traders like the Lupin and Saimhann families.

The truely powerful juggle millions of stars and thousands of men annually, and spend thousands of both every month.

But I'm not an economist or good with money, so I won't go into detail.

Suffice to say, most of the working class are paid in terms of fifteen tin every month, with soldiers and highly prized slaves earning much more.

A professional soldier might make five gold stars a week, if he's lucky.

You arrange for the men to recieve a small bonus of a leonine star. It does not take you long to return home and change into evening wear more suitable for the gathering. You send a servant to bring the carriage around while your bloody garments are disposed of.

You note the presence of your sister, who is in the parlour reading one of her many books about emancipation. It is rare for you to see each other despite sharing an apartment. She is as dusky skinned as the rest of your family, and wears her black hair shorter than is fashionable, close enough to the scalp it was almost mere fuzz. She is wearing a loose night gown of white silk and lace, glasses perched on the bridge of her delicate nose.

She doesn't acknowledge your presence, a fact that wounds you. Before stepping into the family trade you had both been very close, close enough you were assumed to be twins by outsiders. She had encouraged you to talk up fencing, while you had encouraged her to study and be more than an object for your father to trade.

"Good evening sister," you say, taking a seat beside her. She gives you a dismissive glance and turns back to her book. "Now what's brought me the cold shoulder this time?" you give her a grin as you lace up your cuffs.

"You buy and sell people like cattle," she replies, continuing to read, "You could have been anything else, but you decided to be an evil man like father, granpapa and Esteban. You could have been like Emilio, and joined the Royal rmy. Or taken up farming. Anything."

This is an old, sore point between the two of you. Theresa was a convert to an idealogy that preached universal emancipation of slaves. It was not popular in cities like Narleen or in Nova Leon as a whole, and outright forbidden on pain of slavery in Old Uropa, but it had its converts and its preachers.

It was said to come from fabled Jericho, a land where all men are free. But who can say where it started? Whether in the swamps of the Sin-Louis or the streets of Old Uropa, it was only popular amongst the left-wing academia, and then only as a theory. Perhaps the slaves loved it, who knew?

The only universal slaves' rights are the right to housing, clothing, protection and food. Some are granted an allowance, most are not. It really comes down to the individual master. They aren't allowed to be casually killed or brutalized, but doing so is only punished with a fine. Most people get around the legality of killing unruly slaves by selling them to the gladiator leagues, who use them as entertainment fodder.

The most dangerous time for a slave is the inteim period, when they haven't yet been bought. Before being sold a slave trader can do whatever they like with the slaves they have under their protection.

Its possible for a slave to be freed in his or her master's will, and debtor slaves are freed after a certain number of years corresponding to the debt owned. Some poor debtors choose to remain slaves if they find themselves in comfortable positions. Bankrupt teachers rarely leave slavery voluntarily if they have landed a cushy gig teaching a bunch of noble brats.

You bid your sister a good evening and depart to your waiting carriage. It takes you a short time to reach your destination, a large town house that had a few later arrivals such as yourself. You pass the invitation to the doorman, who nods and lets you through. It has been a year or more since you were last in the Brannagh town-house. It was much as you remember it. Sparse, but what decoration there was spoke of an old and rich legacy, older than Gand Country, far older than House Zahak.

Estelle you spot immedietly, a slim young woman of seventeen. She wore a silvery dress that matched her platinum blonde hair. The lamp light caught on the silver hair net she wore, casting a brief halo around her head. Tall, long legged, and blue eyes with gold flecks, her eyes brows dart along with a lively, animated face.

She is easily the most beautiful woman in the room. Which was saying something, as Estaban had brought both the tall Nubian girl and the Nord-one, and dressed them almost to the point of immodesty.

he stood scowling in the corner as Estelle chatted with a handsome young soldier, whom you took ti be the eponymous Rikard.

You know a number of people, mostly by reputation and family trade secrets. You spot the host of the party, Kingsley Brannagh, an elderly man who still wears the tartan of the now destroyed nation of Alba, who is deep in conversation with Phillipe Atois, who had changed from his soldierly costume to a simple but still refined copy of a woodsman's outfit.

The family had once sold Kingsley a young boy as his 'cup-bearer' and that boy had grown older until he had become a handsome young man. He still stood beside his master dutifully, dressed as well as any aristocrat present.

You spot Lord Paravel, a tall man of a similar cast to his son Rikard. A greying lion compared to his son, he had a full mane of silver-streaked blond hair. He had a charisma to him that had won him many admirers. Grand-papa had sold him a number of children that had later turned up dead, corpses mutilated.

Zahak did not deal with the Paravel family much any more.

When you feel it is appropriate you move in to greet Lord Brannagh. Phillipe gives you a hard look, but it eventually twitches into a small smile.

Branagh clapped his large, rough hands on your shoulder, and pinches your cheek the way he did when you were a child. "Good to see you Estavo! How is your father?"

"In Gran-Bordeaux, visiting my brother Emilio. They no doubt send their warmest regards."

    "And I them."

"If you will excuse me. He ducks aside, leaving you alone with your brother, who you see now is a sweating wreck. His glass is empty, the cuffs of his shirt are stained with wine, and his face is haggard as if he had just been hit with a severe hang over.

"That man will need a few slaves in the future," he tells you, "But I won't be dealing with him again. Take these bitches over to his manse tomorrow. They can stay with you the night."

He stalks off without saying another word to you, and the two girls fall on either shoulder nervously. Its clear they were frightened as well, but they had kept better composure than poor Esteban.

Your next target for the evening was Estelle herself. Its in a moment of calm that you find her, seperated from her fiance and the gaggle of young aristocracy that seemed to swarm about her like flies.

She drains a glass of whiskey like a seasoned slave-hunter, and gives you a friendly smile.

"Been a long time," she said, face still plastered with a wide grin. "A very, very long time. You've gotten taller, put on muscle." she runs her hands down the front of her dress. "I like it."

"I didn't bring you a gift," you tell her.

"There's only one gift I want from you," she says, very softly, with that same broad grin. "Escort me to my chambers? I think I've had too much to drink. You can bring the slave girls too, if you want."

She is Estelle of house Brannagh, daughter of Kingsley Brannagh and the fiancee of Rikard Paravel, son of the High Judge Jean Paravel. She's an old aquaintance and one of your sister's childhood friends, but after your sister's conversion to Emancipation they had a falling out. You're a few years older than her. (you are twenty, she's seventeen) She's also a knowledge broker despite her youth, who specializes in gathering aristocratic secrets and selling them to interested parties.

Her family and your family are quite close, and her father is aware of her affections for you. (and not entirely disapproving of that affection, the old queer)

She is willing to have a drunken four-way with you and the two slave girls on the night her engagement was announced.

Rikard would most certainly challenge you to a duel if he found out. His father won't touch you because of the dirt your grandfather has on him i.e he's a pedophile that killed some slave children.

Orion is at the Mermaid's Cunny downing drinks with Ben Cohen. You're tired when you find them, and Orion informs you there's no information to be had that night. He offers you a drink instead, and the service of the nastiest whore you've ever clapped eyes on.

You take the drink, but instruct them to accompany you to the Arena. Orion's face hardens. He used to be a gladiator, and had lost his eye fighting in the pits. They follow without argument.

The evening is winding down all over the city. eEvery where except here, The Arena!

It was a dome larger than an Old Uropa castle, made from a strange white marbel. A vomitorium admitted people and spat them out in a long, choking stream. Cheers so loud they rocked you to your very bones rang out. The rich, the poor, the ugly and the inhumanely beautiful, fee or slave they marched in step for the excitement of the bloody games.

Men juggle swords at the entrance while others make bears dance. Children run freely, and you keep a tight hand on your purse as they do. Whores advertise. A woman had a booth advertising fortune reading. Two men fenced with loaves of bread in mock seriousness, dressed in a motley parody of gladiator garb.

you are finally admitted into the Arena.

you've seen it before, but it still awes you. The broad sand pit, the jagged spiked walls, the great pump that could create artificial lakes on command. Caged entrances hid snarling beasts and snarling men. The whole room was lit up by a great chandelier that hung from the cieling, a sun in miniature.

No one knows who built it, it was here long before Narleen, but everyone knew what it was for now, a Wonder of the World.

You can start a business out of your own pocket, but you'll need a permit from the Council.

You have an allowance of sixty leonine stars, that's not counting personal income. Your slave deals rakes in a thousand stars monthly, but you only get ten percent. Your junior station means the bulk is split between your elder brother and the family coffers.

The only person you know who might deal in such things is Nualla the Witch. You know her only a little bit, from a crazy adventure of your youth. She operates out of the swamps, and it is well known how often rich young men turn up dead after wandering the swamps alone at night.

Magic is not natural. You have to learn it, and the learning is exceedingly dangerous with a good teacher, suicide with anyone else or on your own; should you stumble into it.

Firearms are young at this moment and are not really reliable and efficient but we know they will grow stronger and become better.
We need to find some bright people (slaves perhaps), hire someone and set them to design and develop new weapons.

Gamblers are watching the sand pit eagerly as bookmakers are taking bets. You've arrived just in time for the main attraction, the famed and much promoted duel between the foreign champion Tauro and local hero Tommo Hawk. You spot them down below, the slight, pale form and bright red hair of Tommo. The large, heavy frame of Tauro. It looks like a battle between a man and a boy, not two famous warriors.

A bookmaker, a brown skinned woman with rotting brown teeth, asks if you have a bet you would like to place. Odds are on Tauro to win. Three-to-one odds on Tommo.

A good idea. There are two ways for getting permits, a petition or buying one. Buying one is expensive, but realistic. For what you're talking about how ever it might cost a couple of thousand stars. A petition needs to be signed by a majority of the council. Seven men usually sit on the Council, the arrival of Artur raises that number to eight. Which means you'll need five signatories to get it off the ground.

Start up capital of that nature would still run into the thousands of stars either way, but a number shrewd backers might be able to put up the cash.

You place ten stars on Tommo, got to support the local champion after all. Orion scowls and Ben just sighs.

"Its a long shot boss," Ben says, "Very long shot."

"That boy is a cocky fool." Orion said. "I taught him right before Ramon freed me. Maybe he's wisened up, maybe not, but I've fought Tauro. He ripped me eye out."

The match starts. The crowds that had come expecting a grand show were soon disappointed. Tommo threw the axe thatlent him his nickname. It caught on the guard of Tauro's lone pauldron and went flying away. He threw the second little hatchet he had in hi belt, right as Tauro stepped forward.

The big man shifted his weight and it went whistling passed. A throw and a miss, a throw and a miss. Tauro kept coming on with slow deliberation, always just dodging the spining hatchets. Until Tommo was out of tomahawks. He was down to his spiked gloves. Taros carried a heavy bladed glaive.

A swipe so fast but Tommo leapt back grinning.

Guts sloped out of his open belly and splattered on the dusty floor. He looked down in horrified surprise. Tauro looked on impassively.

A second swipe of his glaive sent Tommo's bright red head flying across the Arena floor.

    It was already over.

You haven't made a habit of saving money, but you would judge there to be roughly two hundred stars in your personal account.

You know a great deal of the Council members. Kingsley D'Brannagh, Phillipe Atois, Jacques Lupin (leader of the Lupin family), Carlos Esetevez, Seamus Columbo, Jean Paravel and your Great Uncle, step-brother to your grandfather Dustin Russo (who is also the head of the Ricatti Union, though that is a secret amongst the aristocracy and you only know it because your grandfather and he started out together as dockside gangsters)

Inside you find your sister eating with the two slave girls, sharing what looked like one of her terrible home cooked meals. Part of her guilt no doubt, and a way to give back, she was lecturing them on the importance of freedom and sensible civil action as they picked unappetisingly at the badly burned ensemble of greens and chicken.

"With you as a cook they aren't likely to put on excess weight," you remark as you unclasp your half-cape, drapping it across a hook on the door.

"I am instructing these poor things on how to best go about attaining freedom. If not from their oppressers, then from within themselves. If you were a decent human being you would at least try to save their minds from the slave-state indoctrination, if not their actual bodies!"

Would you like to go into business with me, an honest business, developing muskets and cannons?"

Having won your sister over to your cause and seeing her off to bed, you retire as well. After the trials of the day you find sleep comes quickly to you. As soon as your head hits the pillow, you're snoring. You don't even have the strength to fondle one of the slave girls.

You awake to find a terribly cooked meal waiting for you. The dish was presented by your sister, who was dressed more sensibly than she had ever been in years. A low cut brown dress with a tight corset, it showed off her well built, statuesque figure. She had a wide smile on her face, her warm brown eyes glittering.

She had even gone without cutting back her hair this morning.

Once her hair had grown out you would judge her a match for any of the other pretty young things in Narleen. Your slavers instincts calculated how much she'd make in the Pleasure Quarter and it was so much you probably wouldn't feel guilty for selling her.

She waits for you to eat as you think on what you should be about first thing this morning.

Esteban instructed you to take the slave girls, who awoke slowly on either side of you, over to Artur's. Orion was watching the Just Brothers. You were curious about investigating magic with Nualla the Witch. And you had the new business you had proposed to your sister to deal with.

He even jested about making 'me' a pleasure slave when I told him off for his behaviour. You know as well as I do that he has the biggest shipping company on the coast, and wreckers besides that, possibly pirates on his payroll too. Imports and exports from Old Uropa and Old Nubia."

"Jean is a handsome man. I heard he had quit dealing with father over the moral quandry of slavery. I truly believe he is the light and hope of a better tomorrow. If we go into business with anyone, make it him."

"Estevez is the drunken idiot who inherited a fortune in land from his brilliant father. Ramon Estevez might have been a cruel bastard, but there's no denying how brilliant he was with money. Father was named for him you know. Now his son is pissing the legacy away. Talk has it he'll be stripped of his council seat if he goes any more into debt, or sells any more land to foreigners."

"We are to be 'given' to him master, once we step foot in there we won't ever be coming out."

Her words ringed ominously as the manse came into view. It was old, decrepit and slowly falling apart. The roof looked ready to collapse inward. It sat like a fat old goblin, sinister to the eye. You heart climbs into your throat at the sight of it.

"Y-you won't have to stay long," you say, "Just observe as much as you can until I send for you. Trust me, I won't leave you in there."

The door to the manse swings open and a familiar figure stomps out. He wasn't wearing gladiator garb, in fact he was dressed quite fashionable, in half cape with broad rimmed feather hat. But the glaive in his hands destroyed any sign of civility to the picture.

    Tauro.

"My name is Hildi, please remember me," the Nord girl cried.

"M-my name is Silty, please, remember me," the Nubian added, tears finally beginning to spill from her eyes.

Tauro strode over to the carriage. He shoved his heavy, pig like head through the window.

"Master Artur wants them. Wants them now." he demanded.

You turn them over and he takes them both in one massive paw. The man was so large up close, he dwarfed the giant Ulrik by a foot and a half. He scooped them both up and swung them over a single shoulder, opposite his glaive. They cried hysterically all the way.

"Get me the fuck out of here," you instruct the carriage driver

    The Witch it is!

Nualla is said to be an old crone of a fearful reputation living in the swamp. She is also an old phoney, or so they say. Half-crime boss, half-mystic, her lodge is said to be a walking house that moves from day to day. A living entity, an extension of the forest. Really its just a big ol' floating boathouse, the likes of which the Natives used to make their homes all the time before the settlers came.

It isn't hard for you to find. You met her once as a youth, dared to find the witch and give her a kiss by your old friend Rolando. You had kissed her, and done more. She had showed a boy the first steps in the game of love, and spat you out the other side. A wiser, more enthusiastic man.

It was exactly where it had been that hot summer afternoon, and so was she, sitting on her porch smoking a long stemmed pipe. Her hair was greyer now, a few more wrinkles, but she still looked good for her age. Her body was wound tightly with tree bark for clothing, swamp reeds for a skirt, and laced roots for sandals.

Her skin was so dark it was like ink, age had not faded it, or the light in her eyes.

Nor had it dulled the machete on her lap.

"Been expecting you boy," she drawled, "Ye best be comin' in."

Was that innuendo? If it was, it still made you smile. You followed her into the hut.

Inside you find it much as you rember. The Tarot table set up in the corner. The Mughal orb that can communicate with spirits. The old tattered banner depicting the supposed blood lines of the Living God.

And the bed, that low pallet that had overseen your transformation into manhood. The same multicoloured quilt that had taken your seed. The same hard pillows that your sweaty head had rested on, when it hadn't been buried in her busom.

    Pleasant nostalgia washes over you.

"I know why yer here," she said, "And it t'aint for another go. Yer swimming in dangerous waters, need a charm to keep the gators from pulling you under." By a bench she drew her machete and brought it down hard on a large cantilope, splitting it in two. Plucked water fowl hanged from the ceilling, and a bowl of nuts sat on the tarot table. Meagre fair, all salvaged by her no doubt.

    "How much?" you ask.

"How much? More than even your kind can afford, and nothing at all," she said with an old tired smile. "Some would ask you to kill a virgin and carry a vial of their blood. But the spirits I truck with aren't up to that nonsense. Five gold pieces and a promise is all I want. And if that promise t'aint kept, yer life is fortfeit."

Evil what killed the Living God. Evil what set yer kind on mine. Evil of the dark places in the human mind, and dark corners of this creaking old world. Jericho fell once, its gotta fall again. The World-Killer will call it paradise, but paradise is full of serpents. You gotta fight him and all like him. Can you do that young man, with yer greedy slaver heart? Can ye be the crusader?"

"What does it mean to be a crusader?" you ask.

"It dunt mean much. Its not the same as it used to be. No waving swords and sayin' prayers. You just gotta abide by the spirits, fight their enemies when the time comes. And the time will come child, tho even the spirits don't know when. Maybe you won't ever be called to fight, maybe all you'll do is say 'no' at the right place and right time. The spirits are vague as to what your part is to be, Master Slaver. The idea of heroes and villains is a human thing, they don't speak in such terms."

She offers you half her cantilope.

"You'll know the World-Killer when you see him, if you see through a spirit's eyes. But remember, you can always so no." Her eyes twinkle as she gives you another grin.

Orion is waiting for you outside Esteban's office. He gives you a funny look as you walk up to him. "You get some honey last night?" he asks before dismissing the question immediately, "Never mind. The Just Brothers have been exploring the city last night. Took two noble girls out of the Flower District. They were kids, one was the daughter of a Manny Cortez named Maria. He's a small time tabacco farmer, even if you have to bow when he walks by in the scheme of things he doesn't warrant a second look. But the other was someone else entirely. Fuckin' Madeline Lupin. Maybe they figured it was the Lupin family that hit 'em yesterday. They haven't made any demands yet, haven't said a fucking word."

Ben Cohen is nearby and he gives a friendly wave, and further down you spot a few other members of the crew. "Got most of the boys up in the Cunny. Said to hold tight until you sent word. No fucking clue if Lupin knows yet, but when he does shit is going to flood the streets."

Esteban makes his presence known before you can react to Orion's information. All of the pants-pissing terror you had seen on his face the other night was gone, replaced with an indignant fury.

"You little shit," he fumes, "Did you tell our sister you were quitting the fucking trade? For some fucking reason Grandfather is threatening to cut me off if you fucking are." He seems ready to draw the sword at his hip, a skinny thing meant for decoration rather than fighting.

you make your inquires quick and to the point. Orion fills you in on everything learned by the beggars last night, and he means everything. From the layout of the guard posts, to how many times they went to piss over the side of the ship. There numbers don't seem to line up to what the dying brother said, but you can't be sure what that means. They didn't spot anyone leave the boat, or return to it in the morning. The only evidence they have against the Just Brothers being behind the kidnapping was the green snake emblem on the tunic of one of the snatchers. It could be they are holed up elsewhere awaiting word, or they have a means of getting on and off the boat without being seen.

You turn to your brother, who is watching you with a confused wrinkle in his brow.

"You think we can contact the families?" you ask

"Er, the Lupins should be easy enough to approach. I can do it for you, got a cart of boys going over there in half an hour." his voice is stuffy from the broken nose, and blood was dripping on his shirt. "The other man, Cortez, is staying with the Paravels' while in town. He manages one of their farms."

Its just artistic decoration to represent one of the Old Language of the settlers. Just wanted to see if it added anything to the character's voice. Not sure yet.

Right, let's send word to the Lupins, give them the information we've gleaned in good faith and offer our help (we'll need allies and favours later, after all), post some reliable fellows to keep watch on the Just Bros, and go to find this Cortez fellow.

Sweet, go for both. Get our brother to drum up a posse whilst we prepare arms and get word to the Lupins and Cortez. Perhaps we can get one of our men to try to buy some of the Just Bros men at the docks, too.

You work quickly firing out instructions. In this climate Orion is not willing to let you go unguarded, and requests you take Ben Cohen with you everywhere for now. He salutes, gathers the remaining men, and leads them back towards the dock.

With only one goal in your mind you take to the streets with Ben, trusting the task of informing the Lupins to your brother. The Paravel residence isn't far. Its water front property, right by the docks. A three story building with guards posted on the main gate, you are admitted without much trouble.

"Mornin' sir," one of the soldiers says, giving you a short salute, "Yer sister is inside speakin' with his lordship."

The door is opened by a valet and soon you are in the very heart of the Paravel mansion. Velvet carpets, gold gilded railings, diamond statues of half naked winged boys. It was a looter's paradise.

Rikard comes bounding down the stairs humming loudly. "Ho there stranger! What brings you to our fine domain?" he is loud and boisterous. He had his leather jerkin unlaced and a bound cut on his arm, basket-hilt rapier scabbarded at his hip, knocking joyously on the back of his leg.

You have also instructed Orion to gather a posse together, as he did yesterday. That hate should still be strong enough to draw fresh recruits, and the previous hire ons still owe a month's service for their pay.

Oh I like the beggar spy-network, we should keep with this up even after we deal with Just Bros.

Anyway, I think it is a good idea to contact Lupin.... though we must be careful for them not to blame us for the incident, it was us who agitated them.

    Not the Lupin family.

    Indeed.

You rattle off everything important relating to the kidnappings, immediately spurring the young Paravel into action. He brandishes his sword and cries to the heavens. He is clearly a bored young man with too much time on his hands.

"Your sister is ensconced with my father, I know not what they speak of, but come friend. Let us see justice prevail and villainy punished!"

We should inquire about this. Try to find out what he knows without giving away too much.

This was one big-ass glorious thread.

Also, OP, I implore you not to use rolls when determining hte course of action at all. AND DEFINITELY do not use them to determine the outcome of each and every action.

Because if you go that way, you basically say a giant "FUCK YOU" to any long-term plans.

It is okay to use rolls for some situations, but please don't do it all the time.
