    Last Time, on Con-Quest!

You had been accepted as an apprentice by the greatly esteemed Mr. Serkei, a german-despising merchant Con-Maker. You have also been pursuing his terrifying daughter as a paramour, and she has of late spurned your failed and poetic advances. You've built yourself a small con-man as an assistant, and gotten the parts and trinkets necessary to begin work on the next one. You've soaked the vocal cords of a small artificial bird in Aqua Vitae, and are ready to animate it.

It is late at night. What will you do?
    RULES AND THINGS TO KNOW

To do strenuous actions with a good chance of failure, or to propose any course of action in opposition of others, roll a d10. The lower, the better, aiming to roll under any relevant stats.

The world is a hellish place, made more so by the morbid business of Con-Making. Centuries ago the method for animating flesh, inanimate objects, and symbolic items into powerful golems was discovered, and it changed the very face of the world. Those who understand the art of creating Constructed Men, or "Con-Men", are of a social class all to their own. The poorest of them can make a good living creating and selling minor magical trinkets. The greatest can shape countries through the force of their unnatural armies.

You travel downstairs, the Maid-Con holding a lantern in one hand as she assists you in the workings. She's rather strong, and easily gets the corpses up on the workbench. You begin stitching and cutting the flesh, and, off to the side, gathering the best parts for your secret, creepy, project.

The hours are long, and the work tiring, and the stares of the maid disconcerting, but within reasonable time, you construct a helper. He only needs a name...

But he's in no shape to be your final work! You only spent a day on him, interrupted only for sandwiches with the maid.

    Watching her eat was...an experience. Her jaws...like a snakes...agh!

Creating a frame from some odd, clear and glistening material, you attach the organs and put it in a human shaped cast that the maid constructed. After mixing and heating the clay to liquid properties, you pour it in the hole in the top.

Now, all you have to do is wait for it to thicken so that you may animate it.

What do you do for the remainder of the day while that happens?

The project is still drying, but should be ready tomorrow. The workshop lacks truly exotic parts, but is healthily stocked. As a general rule, nothing costing more than what the average man makes in a month can be found there.

The morn' is spent eating bacon and eggs with the maid, who you find out has quite the healthy appetite. Checking in on your project, you find that it's drying quite nicely. You had to adjust the seal, but it's still in tip top shape. Researching into fire is mostly leading you to books warning you on how difficult it is to work with in con-making.

A lunch out in the gardens as you teach her more letters, and, as she utterly DEVOURS the knowledge you are giving her, she begins to write and read simple, one syllable words.

Ms Serkei responds amiably to your advances, but turns you down politely. That doesn't stop you from having a pleasant conversation in which she tells you a story about how her grandfather killed 10 men with a kitchen knife and a wad of goat cheese.

As Ms. Serkei has to spend dinner talking to some foreign merchant, the only flirting is directed at Bella, who receives it...rather confusedly. It seems you'll have to teach her the art of love as well as the magic of reading.

Night is spent drawing up plans for a writing spider.

The next morning, Bella asks you a question over breakfast.

She nods, giving you a broad, toothy grin.

And as towards improving grit, you need to do something noteworthy to earn another point of it, relating to Grit. In your case, something extraordinary would be actually succeeding at something difficult relating to grit. Like, say, winning a fist-fight.

Heading down to the workshop, you prepare yourself to animate your assassin. Is there anything special you'd like to do before so?

With little trepidation, you walk down to the workshop and prepare yourself to animate your first truly large project (Even if most of the work was waiting impatiently).

Edward waits by the door, half your height and nodding at you almost imperceptibly. Bella opens the hole in the top of the cast and hands you a knife. Cutting open the skin of your thumb, you dribble a little into the open hole after climbing up on a stepladder held steady by the maid.

After a few moments, a gurgling moan can be heard from within the cast...

Quick, a name to bind it to you!

Not big on pleasantries is it, I suspect it's going to be a problem if we leave it without something to do for a while.

"First, how do you feel, are you working correctly? Secondly, I have designed you to assume other forms, so test that function if you would."

Glance over at the other cons, and back to Henry. "Assume the form of Bella, if you would." and gesture to Bella so he knows who we're talking about.

I had considered him taking our form, but I'd rather not give him any ideas until we're sure how reliable he is. I'm still not sure on the limits of loyalty from cons, are there (reputable) stories of cons turning on their masters, disobeying orders, stuff like that?

It puts you down, and pokes and prods at itself, fingers sinking into it's flesh.

    "I feel...workable." It says.

Looking at Bella, its flesh ripples and compacts on itself, taking her form exactly, if not her tone.

    It works! Sort of!

And with that, I need to leave for the night, I have work tomorrow.

If you are all on, I can continue it tomorrow if you like.
