You look at him, through red eyes, and mutter "Very Well"

he looks at you with a wierd expression on his face then claps his hands together and says "Excellent! i will await the coming wedding day with abated breath!"

Have a cot moved to Calum's chambers so that Herla can stay by his side day and night until he pulls through.

Also, instruct the maester to write down Calum's ravings. Our son is an intellectual, he might find it interesting to review them later.

    >>16542595
Put Karyn (left out of the opening household list for some reason) in charge of wedding arrangements, and let Durian know we'd be honored to provide the food and entertainment for the ceremony, but wouldn't dream of serving anything less than the finest Dornish red, which is more his department to supply.

Bertrand is supposed to be handling the bandits, so let's give him a month or two and see how that goes.

Regarding the Freys... just keep smiling and wait for them to make a move. If he tries anything, Winterfell will be on our side.

a week passes and construction is coming along nicely on the market, you've already got a very interested man in setting up a trade route between here and white harbour for your woods and iron.

your new recruits are shaping up nicely, the clanging of training weapons and the barking of Kelor and his Sergeants fill the courtyard with the sound of activity, and Herla has reported that Calum has a good chance of living if he fights off this dementia.

the plans for the weddings are going somewhat smoothly Durian wants a southron wedding but your wife is wanting a Northern wedding and you can constantly hear them arguing about it.

You walk up to the rookery, to get away from the noise and as you look out over your small fiefdom a raven flies in with a note, quorks at you in gretting and goes to eat some grain left out by Herla. you retrieve the note and it inviting you to a marriage between Criin's Eldest Daughter and a Frey Boy, the odd thing is, it was sent by Ned...

Let's get a road mapped out so that we can send people to and from White Harbor with ease. This market is going to make us rich.
However, I would advise mapping the road to avoid any contact with Criin territory. Make sure the lords of the land it passes through are friendly or neutral to us.

Speaking of Criin, I say we attend the wedding. Walder Frey is famously douchey and crass, but it's his own (grand?)son's wedding. Even Lord Frey wouldn't *snerk*
Couldn't get through that one with a straight face.
Still, we should be safe enough. Let's go to the wedding.

Oh, on weddings, we need to stay far away from the wedding planning process. One wrong word and Durian/Karyn/both will hate us forever.

how on earth do you plan to disguise soldiers as your bodyguard? disguising them as servants won't work unless everyone at criins place are blind. i reckon dont bother disguising it, use the excuse of rampant banditry to justify their presense.

I'll give you a basic overview: our dad was an insane dick and gave our family a bad rap. More recently: we've been attacked by the previous lord criin, who was sent to the wall for his actions, we've sent our oldest son to the south to find a husband for our recently widowed daughter and to set up alliances/trading deals, also our middle son was grieviously wounded in a hunting accident and is currently recovering from his injuries. If anyone would like to add to this feel free

You decide to attend the wedding, you bring along Kelor and a small guard of five of your toughest men to protect the wedding gift of 50 dragons.

upon cresting a small hill you see Criin castle its outlying village, its a small motte and bailey, and the town around it looks like its seen better days, spurring on your horses you reach the motte before sunfall.

as you walk in you are greeted by icy stares by the bride to be and the groom. As you approach to present your gift the bride spits at you, which causes gasps of astonishment from other attending lords, her husband quickly excuses his wife to be as having too much to drink and still have problems about her father being on the wall. he accepts the gift but with covered hostility.

sensing you're not welcomed from them you find a nearby lord to the south of you, he introduces himself as Lord Werth of Spur Castle you find out that he too has had problems with Criin, and over the course of the feast you two talk about affairs in both of your kingdoms and have a jovial time, despite getting drunken glares from the bride, afterwards you retire for the night

day comes and you wake with a throbbing headache, and as you start to ride out you see several hung roosters hung from the gate...

We are Lord Skylar of Strongcock, redeemer of our House.

Our wife is Karyn of Greyjoy, and our marriage kept us out of the fighting during Balon's Rebellion. Ned had a grudge against our father for that, but we've mended bridges somewhat.

Our eldest son, Ian, has gone to Dorne to seek business opportunities. While his silver tongue worked on arranging shipments of produce, he found Lord Durian Calik, who has come north to marry:

Edyth, our eldest daughter. Her first husband died in a fishing accident, though some suspect foul play. She's beautiful, but cold.

Calum is the middle child, and he's a scholar with a curious mind. He lost his legs in a hunting accident last week, and has become delirious/prophetic while fighting the infection.

Our youngest son Zachary has gone to the Eyrie to squire under the Arryns, as a favor from Lord Stark. We haven't heard from him recently.

Our youngest daughter is Dina, who, though not a tomboy, doesn't exactly excel at the womanly arts. Her skills and talents have yet to come to light.

A ranger named Bertrand, a former bandit, is charged with cleaning up the woods on our land.

His brother, Kelor, is our castellan and watch commander. He was wounded during the Cliin attack, but remains loyal.

Maester Herla has a library and a nice singing voice.

The Day of the wedding arrives, and guests have been pouring in all day giving there well wishes, outside of town Balon and Ned have set camps as far away as possible from each other yet close enough to keep an eye on each other, but luckily they are ignoring old blood between them...for now.

Luckily Zachary was able to come and even better Ser Weynwood and his wife accompanied him to meet you and your wife,Your wife greets Balon with open arms with a squeal of happiness and Balons weathered face lights up a moment as he sees her and embraces her with a hug, he sees you and gives you a knowledgeable nod, he then sees edyth walks over to her and gives her a kiss on the forehead.

Next Came Ned, his wife, Bran, and Robb who greets you with formality, and Ned shaking your hand in a friendly handshake.

Slowly the procession starts to die down, as you're about to start the ceremonies A fat balding man comes up to you struggling for breath

"i am sorry my lord, for beign tardy" he gasps" I am Wylis Manderly, my father sent me here in his stead, he would come if he could make it but well...you know" he blushes trying to avoid talking about his fathers weight "House Manderly eagerly awaits for your Trade, and may both our houses prosper!'

several hours pass and your guests feast on your wifes sausages (none more so then Ned) as Bran grills Zachary and Ser Weynwood about being a knight, dropping not so subtle hints about wanting to become one himself, much to the amusement to Zachary and Weynwood.

As dinner progresses even further you can start to tell that Balon is slowly drinking a bit too much, and is starting to stare at Ned with more and more hostility. you motion for your wife to defuse him before it ends in a disaster.

    Maester Herla's quote:

"well milord" Maester Herla starts, "a good starting market would cost us close to 300 dragons, and a good forge would cost us about 200, and probably and another 100 for us to bring a blacksmith here." he clears his throat "now for strengthening the wall unless we find a good source of Granite, or a strong stone nearby it'll cost around 2000 dragons to bring the stone here and then maybe another 100 for labor, watch towers, using our wood we have now would be cheaper around 100 per tower. Surveying would only cost us 50 for a good skilled crew to come from White Harbor and if we want a really extravagent meeting for Durian i've calculated it at around 150."

So we should be able to build a Forge, after this wedding is over.

Hang on. I've done medieval economics.

650 people is barely enough to ensure genetic diversity with a rigorous tradition of outbreeding.

We are, quite frankly, fucked. At 650 people we may as well just burn ourselves alive in Autumn.

I can only suggest permanently granting lands at a bearing rate, and granting additional lands on the basis of owned oxen, dropping the tax rate to zero, and clearing out those "deserts" or forests as moderns would call them.

650 will barely support a single mounted warrior, non-Knight. 650 is enough to support a very very very small manor.

Add to this the fact that we're running 150 military individuals, that means we've got a non-productive ratio of at least 200:650, or 1:3, this isn't good at all.

Settlement, freedom from feodal dues, land grants in perpetuity. (Sort them out three generations from now through usury during Winter.)
