6 KB TG Quest 22: Silent Hell OP 11/12/11(Sat)19:42 No.16930200
BY THE HOARY HOSTS OF HOGGOTH, IT'S TG QUEST!!!!!

    Last thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/16923441/

When last we left the crew of the Oncoming Storm and their attendant fleet, they had the misfortune of being trapped over a world consumed by mists and horror. Initial recon efforts yielded survivors from the I.S.S. that recounted a tale of impenetrable mists blooming up from points in Maine, Pennsylvania, Transylvania, and the South Pole. Reality Distortion scans confirmed these as distort points. An attempt to scry on the South Pole revealed the Mountains of Madness and their abandoned alien city, while the Eldar Farseers predicted that the team only had two weeks to save this world, and could not flee the planet lest they fall victim to some unknown calamity.

A probe droid was sent down to the Maine distortion and swiftly found Heather Mason. She stands now in front of it, blinking with surprise, a bloody pipe in hand.

    Fuck yeah, /tg/ Meta Quest!

Alright, can we patch in an audio channel to the probe droid?

"This is the cruiser Oncoming Storm! If you're hearing this message then this probe has found a human survivor and is playing this. Please respond and the robot will let us know there's a survivor!"

While that distracts the girl, try to get better readings; see if she's SUE contaminated.
ANON, run her face through our databanks, I want confirmation that it's Heather.

All hail /tg/ quest. I really like this shit, ya know? Only one thing: at times, I think we as a group are veering dangerously close to SUE territory with our troops and heroes. We need to keep this in check. Hammer home our isignificance, our un-importance. "We are nothing; the Canon is everything" should be our motto.

    >I think we as a group are veering dangerously close to SUE territory with our troops and heroes
    That's the point, though.
We fight SUE's, and in fighting them, become like them. Even worse for us, since we're supposed to clean out major infestations and need the weapons, technology, and magic in order to survive.

Not only that, but our job isn't just killing SUE's; it's to deal with crossovers that are in danger of altering Canon and causing reality distortions. Things that CAN'T be handled by the subtle black ops methodology that keeps most field agents safe from the temptation of getting one more piece of tech, one more magical artifact.

I don't know why I'm surprised anymore. Sure, robots. Talking robots, why not. Waitasec..." Heather tilts her head. "Cruiser from where?"

It is difficult to get a reading with the mist interference, but the reality distortion does seem to be centered on her.

Except not really. Sure we managed to beat Sauron's forces, but Ahriman played us for a sucker. And our lack of preparation turned our encounter with the Sandmen into an abject failure.
And even when we fought the world, that was mainly because we were smarter than them, not stronger. If you were paying attention, near the end both MechaGodzilla and Pellaeon spent the last ten minutes or so in more or less abject retreat.
When we do win, it's thanks to planning and luck, not all the cool stuff we have.

Now, according to our instruments, you are the centre of one of these reality distortions. We are not accusing you of being responsible, Miss, but you are the locus of a distortion and we must know what caused it in order to fix it. >Right. So we're doomed to fail, is that what you say?
No, that's not what I'm saying at all.
What I'm saying is that the we are tempted to get into Mary-Sue-ish territory because of how we can dip into an pull out what we need from many different Canons.
But simply getting better tech and weapons doesn't make us Sue-ish; it's when we put our faith into our own infallibility, rather than working for our victories.

So I'm saying that, as long as we make sure to plan things properly, and not blindly go into a situation sure of our own success, that we won't fall to becoming a SUE.

No, it's still too early to be sending people down.
We should keep it to droids until we have better information about the Canons that are involved, and what factions have made the transition and are operating here.

We are the main characters of our story. The world is affected primarily by what we do by virtue of us being the protagonists. It's not SUEdom, it's a natural consequence of being the focus of the story.

However, there is a very fine line between simply being important to the story and being an outright SUE. But the distinction between us and them is that we attempt to preserve canon continuity, not warp it to our own standards. As long as we keep that goal first and foremost, we are not SUEs.

As I recall, Heather Mason is supposed to be either a vessel or the reincarnation of some dark deity in the Silent Hill series. Or something along those lines. These might be responsible for the reality distortions.

I only played SH3 once like 5 or so years ago and didn't finish it. A plot synopsis online would probably be a better source of information.

But a general warning if we send down troops: Silent Hill may change drastically to "suit itself" better for the group sent there. Especially moreso if the group is composed of troubled or dark people. Keep this in mind if we send people with troubled or dark pasts.

But the reverse is true as well. In Silent Hill 2, the only child there was in no danger at all as she was, for all intents and purposes, innocent. As such, androids and/or machines sent down there may not elicit much a response from the darkness.

    Not yet.
We have the probe droid to keep an eye on her, and there are other probe droids that we sent down that we need to check in on.

Also, remember that Tosh is psi-active, and could be open to telepathy based attacks.
And depending on the type of mists we're dealing with, the mist itself might affect him psychically.

For now, we're waiting on the Drones to investigate reality disturbances in the 4 areas. We've found Heather Mason at one of them, the Mountains of Madness at another, and we haven't investigated Pennsylvania or Transylvania yet.

Send Heather up to our fleet, have the Psions and the Aurors probe her mind, have the Farseers see if, in the future, we would be best served by having Heather live, or having Heather die.

    >>16930373
True. We must be very wary of staring too long into the Abyss.
    >>16930378
I'd rather send Heather up before sending Tosh down. Silent Hill takes a person's mental traumas and makes them real. Tosh has seen the zerg eat half of his race, and he was also subject to SEVERE mental trauma as part of his Ghost and Spectre training, enacted upon him by his handlers.
Send Tosh to the mist, we might get Zerg and Confederate Specops showing up.
In case you're not aware: Zerg >>> Zombies, and Confederate Specops are basically a COMPETENT version of the Umbrella corp.

A bit of both, as some people have posited.

There was one fat guy in SH2 who managed to survive for a long time. But that may have been because he slowly gave into the urge to kill all the Silent Hill Town-Constructs that represented the people making fun of his obesity and stupidity. He eventually got killed off by James (the main char. of SH2) out of self-defense.

    >Is Silent Hill based on what characters have done, or merely what they regret doing?

Mostly what they regret. It forces them to confront parts of themselves that they try to hide and repress. In Silent Hill (most notably in SH2), the monsters usually are symbolic of the character's inner demons.

It's pretty much impossible to find people in this field of work with NO dark sides or regrets, but we can at least find people who acknowledge those issues and know how to address them in healthy ways so confronting them won't be such a violent shock down there.

Beaming up a reality distortion emitter up to our ship may be a bad idea. ANON may want to confirm this.

Heather was shown to be capable of handling her own inner demons in SH3 without getting killed. We, on the other hand, do not have much collective experience in dealing with extradimensional horrors.

    GENTELMEN.
Given the grave and terrible power of the puzzle of horror before us, I see only one viable solution to undercut the evils here:
The Hammer Solution Set for the Rubik Cube.

We need to go completely out of the box here.

Many of the gravest threats before us rely on the Stars Being Right and the Planets Being In Alignment.

So there we are. We are a sci-fi battlefleet with an extremely strong Science team:
We have to knock those worlds and stars out of alignment.

Then smash Cthulhu over the head with a steamboat.

Then we enact the Revenge ending for Silent Hill 3.

And so on until we cut the legs out from under the Mythos and the other freaky horror eldritch abominations that have over taken

    this world.

Silent Hill's problems I think are just due to the inhabitants at one time fucking around with demon cults and black magic, and tainted the surrounding area with it. I may be completely off-base though.

Ordinarily I'd scoff at the idea of defeating a Lovecraftian entity or influence that is encroaching on this reality, but fuck it, we're from outside this reality too, neither of us are necessarily playing by its rules.

A few people suggested possible influence from an SMT big bad, which, being from a JRPG, is definitely capable of being killed by a sufficient show of force.

But right now, we don't know what precisely is the underlying cause of all this. Once we're able to talk to Heather and gather more information, we'll have a better hold on what's going on and how we can fix it or fight against it.

The Left 4 Dead zombies are also virus-based zombies, which don't display this phenomenon.
The easiest way to check a Viral zombie instead of a Magic zombie is to see whether the zombie's blood has coagulated in its veins or not.
    Not coagulated = it's still alive but psychotic = it's been virus'd.
Coagulated = It's obviously nothing in the blood that could make it a zombie = not virus'd.

    >> Anonymous 11/12/11(Sat)21:51 No.16931459
    Given the necessity of Heather:

My guess is that this is originally the Silent Hill world, and that the others are visitors. Remember what Heather has inside her?

    A God.

Problem: Getting the God to be born may allow it to enforce canon and repair this universe. However, the God may also be malevolent and decide to trash shit. I may also be wrong and this ISN'T Silent Hill, in which case the God would completely destroy this universe.

So until we acquire further information, we must keep Heather save from ALL things that might cause the death of the unborn god, or it's birth.

One note: We don't need to worry about top-tier fiends like Pyramid Head. Silent Hill monsters are projections from a person's subconscious. Since Harry isn't here, no Pyramid head.

Additionally, we might try to make contact with Valtiel. He guards the God, and might be able and even willing to work with us.

Getting an Elder Thing to recognize us and ally with us might be one of our better options.
The Elder Things specifically were at war with the Star Spawn of Cthulhu, and showing ourselves as fellow masters of science might get them to work with us, especially if we destroy some shoggoths for them.

The problem will be communication; we need to show them that we can communicate.
If we have another probe droid available, we should have it go down to the Mountains, and look for evidence of Peabody's expedition.

Explain that the government is regaining control over areas lost to... dimensional instabilities and that we'll be fixing things soon. Keep Heather as unaware of her PROTAGONISM as possible. The Silent Hill people are unlikely to know much, possibly because they were in the Otherworld when the Event occurred, so we don't need to interrogate them. Pretty much.

It looks like we're asking Heather what happened after she and Cartland left Silent Hill the first time, and what was going on as the Mist started appearing.

Also waiting to see if the mist is also preventing transporter use elsewhere on the planet (Transylvania), and seeing when the EMH and Data will be ready to go to Pennsylvania to research the zombies there.
