The last few days before you set sail pass uneventfully. Degrians weapons are affixed to nearly two thirds of the DragonBone fleet, only the smallest of ships left unmodified. As the Debauched City begins to slip away into the distance, you begin to feel... queasy. Not terribly so, but uncomfortable to say the very least. A tick in the back of your mind tells you taht at least two of your wives are about to come see to that. Before they arrive, however, a gruff, male voice resounds from behind you "You'll get used to it." the admiral assures, blowing out a stream of smoke from his pipe as he stands next to you.

You nod shakily "I will take your word for it, Admiral."

The old sailor chuckles for a bit. After a while, he breaks the silence "As good a dwarf as Captain Doran is, I loathe docking in this city. His safe area is not quite what my sailors need after so long away from land."

    IT BEGINS

"On the plus side, I was able to wipe some of the grime off of that city while there, though now that I've been there, I can understand the feeling some have that the place should be de-annexed."

"I have to admit, I was a little surprised at how bad this city was. I am glad to see though that even in a place like that, there are people like Captain Doran who still do the right thing."

I forgot, did we scan the crew of the ships? I'm sure any air and water elementalists we find amongst them would be a huge boon for the admiral.

You suppress a shudder as you reply "Yes, I had heard the stories of that city but... to think, one of my captains grew up there."

The Admiral raises an eyebrow "Oh?" he intones, pulling his pipe from his mouth.

You nod "Aurelius, the Deadeye captain, blond hair, has a domineering kharynchek woman on his arm. It is thanks to him that I lost no men in that city. And I agree that it is no place fit for loyal servants of Degnar."

YOu hear Vi's voice emanate from behind you "Are you allright, Justinian?" you acknowledge her, and allow the woman to affix herself to your arm, as she looks out over the water, away from Flumenos. "There was much death in that dity, death decay and illness. We are glad to be away from it."

The admiral inhales from his pipe, before he asks "And which of your lovely wives might this be?" you hardly notice him though, as your gaze catches Vi's become affixed to the vessel you are on, and most intrigued.

Before battle is joined, i'd suggest perhaps Kyria and her small team of apprentices should smith explosive runes for the ballistas of the flagship.

Rapid fire + Explosive = death.

Was thinking more that those ballistas have much greater range than our own archers.

If enough of them strike an enemy ship, we might not even have to board it as it might have already be in flames or sunk.

Also, bigger bolts = more space on them = can put larger runes = bigger boom? (Maybe?)

You grin "This is Vi'Nlya'k'Ranaha, though we call her Vi. And she seems to be most intrigued by your ship, would you mind showing us around?"

The admiral takes one last puff from his pipe, before he snuffs it out, and replies "But of course, Commander, I am most proud of the Wrath." And so, you spend the next few hours walking about the massive ship. The roomy barracks for the marines stationed on-board, the arcane stones that allow chefs to cook hot meals for the crew. The officers quarters, spare sail and sundry storage. Even in the heart of the vessel, the passageways are roomy, exquisitely carved, where not notched or scraped by battle and pristine white. "Shes an old ship, as old as the Empire, and been proudly fighting in her service every day of her life. Never once captured, never once beaten. The greatest ship on the ocean."

After a while, Vi begins to worry away at a small chip in one of the alcoves around the egress holes in the rear of the massive ship through which the sailors relieve themselves. "Are there any shards from the ship that We could have?" she asks, frowning and giving up on the shard of bone she had been tugging at.

The admiral glances about nervously as he finishes using one of the latrine chutes. As his excrement tumbles to the sea, he turns and asks "TO what end do you wish to see the shard? We have not lost a single shard from the ships interior, and only a few from her exterior, and are loathe to part with them."

She pauses, before replying "We... wish to try something that could prove, useful."

You note the admirals aprehensive expresion, and decide to allay his fears "I do not know what my wife has planned, but I trust that nothing untowards will come of it. In fact, I look forward to the results of her efforts."

The admiral nods, slowly "Very well, I will show you to the storeroom we keep shards of our vessel in." nearly half an hour later, you are standing with Vi and the Admiral in a dark room, lined with shelves, each of them covered in small fragments of bone.

Vi respectfully makes her way into the room, and selects a small shard, no larger than her smallest finger. "Such a strong growth." she mumbles "Could never grow something like this on our own." Wasting no time, your wife drops down into a meditative pose, the small shard of bone resting in her open hands... and sets to work.

After the first hour, she is drenched in sweat, and the shard is barely the size of one of her palms. After three, the shard just barely spills out of her cupped hands. After a quarter of a day, she has what looks to be a finger-bone the size of your forearm. Gasping, barely able to keep from collapsing back, despite your supporting her, she wheezes out "If Laelith and Kyria could see this as We do, they would... both... agree." she finishes, before fainting into your arms.

The Admiral, who had been watching with you, is stunned in shock. You lift Vi with one hand, intending to take her back to your cabin to rest. When you go to lift the bone, you realize just how heavy it is, as it pulls down on your shoulder-joint.

I think that we should tell Vi that she shouldn't push herself so hard. Well, unless she likes pushing herself like weight-training for her powers or something. But a kiss and a firm "Don't do that to yourself just to be useful, you already do enough for us all." would be warranted I think.

Then run giggling to Laelith and Kyria to show them. Don't let Kyria touch it until the gleam in her eye dies back down to levels that we can be confident she won't begin making parts out of it immediately and catch Laelith when she creams herself in delight of the potential research.

Sighing as you reach your cabin, you deposit the spent woman on your oversized cot. Then, after planting a kiss on her forehead, you chide her "Dont push yourself so hard love, you have no need to prove yourself useful, especially to me." At that, the young woman finally fully surrenders to sleep, smiling.

The next thing you do is to grab the bone, and sprint through the ship, until you find Laelith, Kyria, and Catalina all sitting along the ships ram, watching the sun set below the ocean. Laelith is the first to notice you "What is it, love?" she asks, curiosity filling her eyes.

You grin, widely "Vi... made, something. Something she said both you and Kyria would call perfect."

The dwarf and elf glance at each other, shrug, and make their way over to you. After a short while, Catalina rises to do the same. "Its dragonbone, on a ship made of..." she trails off

"Not a simgle bone went uncarved, unused, after they died." Kyria breathes "YOu mean that she?"

You nod, beaming, as Laelith eyes the bone longingly "I wonder what she hopes to do with that much dragonbone. If properly used, that could go a long, long way."

Catlina nods "I... I can barely force it to twitch... to maeks something from this."

Kyria nods "It may even be strong enough to serve the same purpose Kextraeita does for runes... Hoiw long did it take her to... grow, this?"

See if Laelith can do any research into ways to alleviate the strain on Vi when she does these kinds of things too.

Then uh... well, I guess have dinner with the ladies and chat? Ask them what their thoughts are on the dragonbone and what we might be able to do with it. It's about dinnertime now I assume. We can pick up with the godtalking after Vi's recovery, hopefully the next day.

When he and his temples start offering 'Good Weather Insurance', then we'll buy. At least then, the contract can be properly signed, notarized, and if he fails to keep up his end of the bargain, adjudicated in a court of law.

You're missing the entire point of the temples and such.

The theme is equality, not subservience. Building temples and all that is well and good, they need followers to survive. But we don't kowtow to them and expect to be treated as an equal. Not a worshiper who sacrifices to gain favor. We do our thing and are bros with the gods because the gods like us and we see eye to eye on issues rather than them helping us because we crawl in supplication and give offerings.

Don't forget that we also treat them as arms merchants from a potentially hostile neutral nation.
Never accept anything for free; always pay for the services we purchase. Keep usage of their services to a minimum, because to do otherwise means to grow dependent on a cartel that is in direct competition with our own services (arcanists and elementalists).

The difference is that we do not give them offerings and beg them for miracles; we pay them in the currency of their choice and expect our products/services to be delivered on-time and without damage.

To be completely honest I think we've run all over this one but it's a good principle to TRY and uphold. An ideal, if you will. It won't happen in practice since we're basically constantly fueling a few gods (Raynha, Nyetini, Neshai, Garagush, probably Baashek) massively just by being us and can expect some favors from that just because, especially considering our plans for Nyetini.

Also because as equals we also have the potential to become friends with them, and friends do help each other sometimes just because. Also mutually coincidental objectives, such as when Eago protected Wulf.

    >To be completely honest I think we've run all over this one but it's a good principle to TRY and uphold
Well, there was that one time that Garagush offered a boon, and we turned it down.
On the other hand, Raynha did send down a miracle to aid us in Northmont. We did make sure to ask her how much it would cost, however, which I think was an important point that was made.
I'm not sure what the balance is between Nyetini and us, considering that she freed Vi for us. I think we owe her a temple.
As you mentioned, we have an agreement with Eago since our interests coincided.
Same with Neshai; since our intermediate goals coincide, we get small bits of important lore in exchange for pushing for her goals.

I think we balanced things out with all of the gods, for now, by rebuilding the Temple of the Ten, giving priority repairs to Raynha and Garagush, building up temples for Lamynus, and generally acting as a talent headhunter for priests and priestesses.

Laelith grimaces "Is it safe for her to push herself that hard?"

Not having a good answer, you allow the silence to hand, until Kyria asks "What do you intend to do with it?"

You shrug, sighing "Vi made it, so I will allow her to decide what is to be done with it. Catalina, does this feel any different from the natural bone surrounding us?"

The necromancer shakes her head, silver hair shifting back and forth "No... it feels exactly the same. And just as hard to force my will upon. Not impossible, but..."

You nod, understanding. As the conversation gives way to silent contemplation as to what will be done with the bone you make your way back to your cabin. Already, word of your wives feat has traveled the ship. So it is, that by the time you reach your cabin, Jayne is already waiting there. "How did she do it?" your wife ponders, looking at the bone as you enter. "When I move to re-grow bone, it is all I can do to have it be close to what it came from. How about training our mind some? Do some mental acrobatics with Laelith. I believe we learned the ancient tongue Lena uses for her spells a long time ago, do something like that again. Perhaps the history of the Guild Lands? We're going to be dealing with elves at some point, be it for the war or to reconcile Laelith's family. Might as well learn customs and history for that.

You spend the next few days honing your mind, both against mental attacks, and expanding your knowledge. While you make very little, if any progress as far as mental resistance is concerned. However, in your studies, you learn a decent amount about the Guilds. As far as the warrior guilds, the one that holds in your mind the most is the Steel Oath. By far the most severe of the warrior guilds, they are the second most influential. However, as is often the case with the Guilds, internal squabbling and power plays ensure that their perfectly disciplined medium infanty is never fully gathered on one field.

Delving into the Guild Arcane, which you assume will be resurfacing soon, you find that it is the origin of the 'school' and 'college' terminology common to magic, as they taught every possible way to harness the arcane mists to their members. Easily the most influential of the Guilds before the arcane disappeared, and most likely to be amongst the greatest when the arcane is fully returned.

So it is that you find yourself floating on the plane between the gods domains, Vi floating beside you, curious and apprehensive, from what you can tell. "Justinian, do you wish to visit Nyetini immediately, then go about your business, or would you like us to accompany you on your business in this realm?" she asks you, showing no preference either way.

Before long you find yourself in the familiar glade, Nyetini laid out on a stone, basking in warm sunlight, barely covered by a few vines, as usual.

"Ah, Justinian, I see that you have come to visit me again, and brought sweet Vi'Nlya'k'Ranaha with you." the goddess smiles warmly and rises to walk towards you.

    "Justinian?" Vi asks, somewhat confused.

You chuckle "Taht is quite normal for Nyetini, in fact, I would be more worried were she not so garbed."

The goddess laughs lightly as she reaches you, trailing a hand across your shoulders as she moves to circle Vi. She eyes the woman up and down, as if inspecting for something, before smiling, planting a kiss on her forehead, and asking "I trust all is going well with your family?"

Tell Vi that the decision is hers and that we won't influence her either way, though we will offer our advice if she asks, and thought that she should be aware of all the options open to her. All I truly want for now is a high priestess, or priest, to lead my folowers on the mortal plain. A strong mortal, capable of loving all she meets, and easy to love back." the goddess purrs, looking at Vi.

Vi tilts her head, confused "We... we think that would be a rare person indeed. It is hard enough to love five others, we think."

Nyetini smiles, slowly leading the two of you towards the pool in her glade "You would be surprised how easy it can be to love, when you look at another in the proper light." she pauses to drop a few petals into the pool, their scent filling the glade, making it more relaxing than usual. "Come, relax in my spring, for I see trying times ahead of you." she adds, sadly, as she slides into the pool, her meager coverings returning to the trees as she does so.

You grin, disrobe, and slide into the water. You pause just long enough for Vi to sit in the pool before you, and then drop down between your wife and the goddess, an arm around both of them. "My, forward today, aren't we, Justinian?" and at that, she brushes her impossibly smooth-skinned hand against the inside of your thigh, as she scoots closer too you. Vi, clearly feeling jealous, threatened, or having merely been conditioned by your more depraved... why lie to yourself, from the moment you included her in your family she was doomed to become as debauched as the others. She moves in, doing her best to ape the goddess of love and beauties temptations, or even compete. Before long, you leap from between the two of them, determined to keep your self-control.

You clear your throat as Vi and Nyetini giggle back and forth too each other "You, you said that there were dark times ahead, could you elaborate? Please?"

Nyetini sighs "Perhaps, if you would come back to us. We wont tease, we promise." the goddess teases, as she plants a kiss on Vis cheek, instantly turning the fomrer loukys hive a deep shade of shocked red. As you settle back between the two, Nyetini continues "No matter how my following grows, the source of the darkness remains clouded from me. All I know is that you will be at the center of the fight against it. And... one does not battle the dark without feeling pain. That is why my following grows in times of war as much as Raynhas and... Garagush' followings." she intones sadly.
