26 KB TG Quest 39: The Mountains of Metaness. MetaQuest OP 12/19/11(Mon)20:24 No.17273710
    ODIN'S BEARD!!! IT'S TG QUEST!!!

You are the command crew of the Transpace Guard vessel The Oncoming Storm. You are currently trapped within a world going mad, tormented and tortured into becoming a new Ravenloft by an escaped Dark Power calling itself, "The Ebon Night." You've managed to take out Strahd and Dracula along with Vampire Wesker and Claudia Gillespie, the new Darklords of emerging domains. With the lords slain, most of the globe has returned to normal, even as Azalin Rex managed to flee before you could face him.

However, now two more challenges await. A reality distortion has been detected under the alien city built on the Mountains of Madness. A probe droid sent there, VP-99, managed to discover a secret network of tunnels that the shoggoths shunned for some reason. There you discovered much Old One loot and a chamber with some sort of world pillar in it.

In Japan, another probe droid managing to learn that Griffith and his Apostles managed to take central Tokyo, and were turning it into a medieval domain of terror. The droid even managed to locate Griffith's new base, a skyscraper being converted into a castle-like tower named, "Hawk's Perch."

As always, it is up to YOU to command the Transpace Guard to victory here.

Okay, it's been a bit. Have our science-y crew members made any headway on the translations of the writings?

VP-98 (Japan Drone) is to ensure it's lost all pursuit, then continue it's search for those monster summoners. All stealth protocols are to be followed. Do not reveal self until otherwise ordered, and stick with current cover story.

Team deployed near the pillar is to hold position and await orders.

A little progress has been made. Some of the passages seem to indicate that the pillar is linked to some sort of energy framework that holds the world together. So it is not holding up the world physically, but rather mystically.

The probe droid begins another round of patrols...

Haha. Stealth protocols for the win. At this rate, we're gonna have two epic probe droids! These two definitely get upgrades when things get done here. First on the list: integrated Reality Emitters, and maybe some energy shields.. Obviously better power sources, too!

Maybe sacrifice an Observer for parts to upgrade them.
Observers are just simple drones, while those guys are droids, which have some personality to hero-up with.

The probe droid detects the sounds of a fight breaking out near it during its patrol and accelerates to intercept the disturbance. Hiding in the shadows, it sees before it a grotesque monster that looks like an incredibly obese giant man, with flesh so fat and layers it almost looks like he's melting. What marks him clearly as inhuman though, are the huge eyes set in his chest, with a fanged maw bisecting the bloated stomach. Three other strange monsters battle it, one appears to be a tall masked man with bladed shoes and a large pole-arm, the second appears to be another masked figure with inhuman lanky proportions and an odd fanged-smile-like crest on his chest. The third looks like a lean female warrior with a cone-shaped helmet and double headed naginata.

The three masked monsters are tearing the fat one apart as he repeatedly tries in vain to break past them to get at the three teenagers apparently controlling their actions.

Also, do not harm the pillar in the city. Have VP-99 CAREFULLY search the pillar room's perimeter. Stealth protocols, etc.

Alright. We've located the Persona 4 protagonists. (Still need to locate Guts). They're pretty badass... for kids.

I saw we send in Darius and his battle brothers with a Steel Rain assault, preferably straight unto the monster's head. Alternatively, we contact them with the Probe Droid after their fight's done. Offer intel, support, etc.

Either way, they'll probably appreciate not having to risk their necks anymore once we send in the Astartes.

    >Izanagi is a Japanese creation deity born of the seven divine generations in Japanese mythology. He is also known as Izanagi-no-mikoto, the "male who invites". He and Izanami created many of the islands and deities of Japan. When Izanami died, Izanagi tried to retrieve her from the underworld, but failed. He mistakenly looks at her while she in a rotting, monstrous state in the underworld, which shames her. She attempts to kill him, and swears to kill a thousand of his men a day. If, and only if, Griffith/Femto can summon and control Shadows here, could the Astartes be slightly out of their depth... except Shadows can be fought with brute force anyway.

    Right, it's going on.
Correct me if this is wrong, we have:
    1 Probe droid in Japan
SCP team, UNIT team, Prawns, MI, in Antarctica
Mouse checking the internets at various intact and mist-cleared cities, to see which native world is canon.
Have Mouse see if he can find a way to allow us to spy on any news broadcasts without revealing our presence. No doubt the folks in Europe and North America are scrambling to figure out wtf's going on, and they might give us useful info.
Have the Farseers skein to see if:
    A. What Cheryl's role in vanquishing the dark presence is, and
    B. If the World Pillar needs to stay intact, or get wrecked.
Egon and Data should be brainstorming ways to stop the Ebon Night.
Since we have weaker mists, see if the Aurors can scry into OTHER parts of Japan, other than Tokyo. E.g. Kyoto. Also see if they can spot any wacky Magic activities going on in Tokyo proper.

There, that's got everything settled. Onwards!

Somehow VP-98 is ALSO approaching hero-hood at this rate.

The probe droid gets a lock on a headshot and emerges from behind cover, a ruby bolt of blaster energy boring into the monster's head. Surprisingly, this alone does not kill it, but as it swings its ponderous body around to investigate the sneak attack, the three Personas take advantage of the opening to finish the job but plunging their blades through his back. The fat monster screams and collapses, the excess flesh bubbling away until he is no more than an extremely fat man with a stubbly beard and acne.

"OK, it's done! Hey, thanks for the help... uh, robot-guy," one of the teenagers, a young man with messy brown hair says. He waves. "But we've got to get going! They'll be showing up here any moment! Run and hit!"

"That's hit and run, you idiot! Come on!" a girl with short brown hair says as she grabs his wrist and drags him, following their gray-haired fellow who is already dashing down an alley.

This might be a silly question, but have we tried doing any more traditional techniques?

Ultrasonic imaging within the chamber comes to mind. I don't know how sensitive the shoggoths are to ultrasonic frequencies, but it would be one way for figuring out what the hell is underneath the damn pillar.

Alternately, did we try radar mapping yet? They used that to map the mountains under the antarctic ice not long ago. Might be a bit low tech for us, but it is worth a shot.

Going full-retard scifi? Nano-machines programmed to melt/burrow through the ice until they find something. They transmit data as they go, giving us information continuously until they find something or stop working due to the distortion. Either way, data is data. I don't know what nanomachines we can make on the fly, but we might be able to have a sandman remote operate very small chunks of his body remotely. It all depends on the cannon limitations of the tech.

    In any case, MORE DRONES

Indeed. We'll need to locate a LZ for the Astartes, once the assault starts. Unless we go for the Overlord Drop unto Meiji Shrine? Would allow us to also deploy our Assault Mechs alongside the Knights Inductors, giving them even greater firepower superiority.

I think that, with UNIT troops occupied in Antarctica, we can't really expect to keep up the cover-up subtly. We'll have to use Obliviate spells in a fairly long clean up, but it'll allow us to utterly dominate Griffith's forces during the fight.

As for the World Pillar... I'd say that, once Cheryl is fully trained in Psychics, we send her in to try interacting with it. As the resident "Goddess", she might be able to undo the Reality Distortion set up by Ebon Night without destroying the world. We should also send in the Farseer Council to support and advise her during the endeavour.

Your point about putting mechs in an urban environment is valid, however we're mostly going to use them in the Meiji Shrine area, which by satellite photos is large enough to allow our mech forces the room they need to maneuver. There would be the same collateral as if we'd send in tanks. Considering the "point and click" nature of laser weapons, we'd be dealing with slightly less collateral so long as our Mechwarriors keep their distance and fire discipline.

Keep in mind, I don't plan to send in Hellstars, by all accounts long range Line of Sight BattleMechs, through the streets. They'd be acting as fire support for the Knights Inductors. If there's any Apostle too tough for Space Marines to handle quickly, odds are good it'll be big enough for the Hellstars to be able to shoot it from a distance.

If you guys also want to deploy the Gundams and assorted Mobile Suits we may have (haven't kept track of them), then you guys will have to figure out how we'll use them.

I agree with this. The issue is not whether we CAN field the mechs, but whether we SHOULD. While there is probably enough room to maneuver, we really aren't going to be able to use them to their full abilities. It is very likely that the Apostles that aren't killed at a distance will wreak havoc on the mechs once they get inside the minimum safe firing distance of the mechs. Even if we have ground troops supporting them (KI, DG, Sandmen, TG recruits, ect), we essentially have turned the mechs into giant walking tanks with lasers. Awesome? Yes. Effective in a relatively cramped area with close ranged enemies and required infantry support? Less awesome. They will be huge magnets for aggro and the grunts providing close range support are going to suffer for it. We want to hit fast and hard, and keep moving. Armored personnel carriers and air support would be better suited. If we can keep the enemy off balance we can do much more damage with much less losses. Snipers are a must. If you absolutely insist on mechs, we should use them more as artillery than front row forces. And make sure they have some support for any unwanted close range shenanigans.

I agree with this guy. Our 'mechs aren't really well-suited for anti-infantry operations anyhow, and we can safely assume that all of the apostles are as strong or stronger than Elemental Battle Suits. If they get up close, it's not going to end well for our clanners. While the zone we're going to be fighting has relatively wide-open spaces, Griffith's forces may opt to swarm from all sides.

We might be better off with having the Leopard(s) do strafing runs and generally providing fire support to keep distant apostles off of our away teams' backs.

We have the MLRS, and we might finally be able to use them.
We can have both the VF-25 and TIE Defender squadrons doing air support, but I don't know if the Gunstar is suited for atmospheric combat. I know it's capable of independent re-entry and liftoff, however.

What I'm interested in is focusing the attentions of Griffith and the Apostles on the mech forces we land at the shrine grounds. With dedicated air support from the two squadrons, the Gunstar, and the two Leopards, we should be able to keep the Apostles from entering close range.
This distraction would give Guts, and our assault teams, the breathing room they need to infiltrate Griffith's lair and take him out.

We'll have to keep White Mages very close at hand for Guts. We've seen what the Brand does when close to one of the Godhand.

I am willing to concede Mech support if we can guarantee the presence of air support instead. Less vulnerable and more angles of attack. My primary concern is ensuring that our ground troops have heavy firepower on hand to deal with the tougher apostles without trouble.

The Tomahawk Destroids do appear to have a fair number of anti-infantry weapons. According to the Macross wiki, they have three machineguns (12.7 mm in the head, two 25mm mounted in the torsos), and two flamethrowers (also in the torsos) each. In Battletech terms, that's quite an almost excessive array of anti-infantry stuff to mount on a 'mech.

I forget whether we have two or four Tomahawk destroids, though.

We'll want Cheryl to be fully trained and prepared, which will take about another 2-4 days.
Since they can't leave, we're out 1 Leopard, the Prawns Combat Suits, the Mobile Infantry, the SCP team, and the UNIT team. Also the Observer and VP-99.

They can still fly with the armor packs. It's just that I want the armor packs for the beam cannons and extra protection.

The plan is to fire the missiles early to free up the weight, and then go with the 2 beam guns and the 2 beam cannons. We need extra supplies of gunpods for them -- the default ones for the VF-25 aren't made for reloading by themselves.

Ideally, what I want to do is to make the VFs kite the apostles over to the park into the Hellstar and Tomahawks' range, and have the squadron kill or take down any larger Apostles.

If possible, the /tg/ officer as the tactical controller for the squad should maintain a video link from their cameras.

Japan: We get the resistance set up, tell them that the UN is going to be airdropping aid and trying to rescue any survivors. Include encrypted "for your eyes only and don't tell anyone about this you dumb shit" messages for any protagonists - Guts, P4 folks, etc. - that we'll be landing at the Meiji shrine area, at (time), that we'll be bringing aircraft and soldiers, and that backup from the local forces is appreciated.

Should have room for either a mech or some KI left over, quick vote on which we take with? Either one will have to say on the Al'kesh or inside the hideout.

Bring it in along the water line to the missed drop zone and where we lost contact for recovery, then set up the 'offical' hideout, while the real hideout and the observer watch over the town.

The Al'Kesh doesn't have room for a mech. You're probably thinking of the Hatak.
We have room for 20 more troops. We can probably fit in 20 KI as heavy support in the Al'Kesh in case something happens.

We go in under cloak, go to where VP-98 fell, and we recover if everything looks clear.

Also, before they leave, the Sandmen need to be given plainclothes, and UN Task Force credentials. Same with everyone else.

Also make sure that the Delta Greens have the anti-material rifles with them.

The current load of DG, Sandmen, BLU, Psions, and Abjurers totals 30 people out of the Al'Kesh's total capacity for 50.

Even though we won't be starting operation today, we should have Tosh load up now, so that he can be of immediate use tomorrow on Day 9.

No, the Al'kesh certainly have room for mechs. At least shorter ones. Remember, there's quite a lot of vertical space in those things.. which seems to serve no purpose in Stargate other than the command area to have a balcony view of what it in the bay area.

I agree on the 20 KI number, I was also roughly equating the amount of floor space they take up to what some of the mechs do.

In either event, it sounds like we have more vote for KI than mech, so we are go!

The 15m height given for the Al'Kesh is from the bottom to the top, which is tapered. There' is significantly less room than that.

Also, how do you expect to load and unload mechs into it? I don't recall a cargo door being shown, as everything was loaded and unloaded via rings. Can you point to an episode that shows the cargo doors open?

You know, we say that it has a troop capacity of 50, but it is also optimally crewed by 12, even if just two can pilot it. There's room on that command deck to fit two White Mages and Tosh. If we're sending KI, we should send Darius along up there too.

We don't have rings, we have Asgard Teleporters.
Doors could be an issue though, 'cause we don't want to use the 'porters. They're Death Glider sized doors from what we've seen. A few feet taller than a Stargate, but fairly wide. Yeah, other than a battloid crawling in, or being rolled in on it's back, that won't work out for us here.
Al'kesh is only suitable for mechs when we can use the teleportation system.

The rings comment was to reinforce that the original Al'Kesh design assumed that the rings would be the primary method of loading and unloading.
I am well aware that the Al'Kesh we have uses Asgard transporters.

Honestly, the rings always seemed like a terrible deployment style for serious troop movements. 6 people at a time in a slow-ass way to unass 50 people in combat.

Though it does seem that their mode of operation was to have air superiority and just unload at their leisure.

Well, it's a Go'auld design, what do you expect?

I would say go with this deployment:
    Sandmen (11)
    Delta Green (12)
    Abjurers (4)
    Psions (3)
    BLU Team (9)
    Tosh
    Knights Inductor (19)

Double-check that the Delta Greens have all of the sniper rifles we picked up back in the Shadowrun world, including the anti-material rifles rated for anti-tank duty. If we have them, or can replicate them easily, some LAW's and Stingers as well.

Also fabricated UN Task Force credentials for everyone.

While true that we could take out some of the 12-person crew in order to carry more troops, the atmospheric conditions around Tokyo are still pretty treacherous. I'd rather have a full flight crew, rather than deal with any penalties a smaller crew would incur.
The drop-pod got 53 and still went off-course.

So, plans for this stealth team:

Get Delta Green to observation positions.
Sandmen and BLU Spy mingle lightly and gather word-of-mouth intel.

BLU Engineer sets up dispenser, sentry, and teleporters at base. Then we can take the entrance pad with us for quick exits. At least those still seemed to work in Raccoon City.
    BLU Sniper covers the roof.
The rest of BLU just chills until we can plan some raids.
With their blue outfits and international accents, we claim BLU team is UN team.

White Mages and BLU Medic treat injured freedom fighters.

Abjurors and Psions support operations. Invisiblity, clairvoyance, whathaveyou.

Tosh is now our strategic planner for this operation, he's been on a lot of sabotage and assassination ops in his time.

Darius and KI chill on the Al'kesh, along with at least one White Mage, watching things and waiting for the time that the heavy drop is needed.

Al'kesh and Observer provide aerial recon. Let the Delta Green folk have the cheap UAVs for quick glances around.

We don't have an Observer; the only one we have left is at Antarctica.

Also, the first job that the team will have once they arrive in Tokyo is to find VP-98's memory core, and attempt recover.
Then they need to test the limits of the transporter from within the mist.

Also, I'm voting against bringing the White Mages on the Al'Kesh. Medic will be enough for this, especially since this is still getting recon. Darius should stay up in orbit as well. He can come down when the rest of our forces land.

As for when they get there, yes, gathering the remains of the droid and the drop pod are their entry goals, the rest are the plans after that.

I tend to favor sending Darius and the White Mages down because, when it comes down to it, that KI force is there in the event that everything goes to shit before we're ready and we need a sturdy group to fight for the lives of our team there until backup can arrive.

Either way, I should get to sleep a couple hours ago.

I leave you with this thought: Incursion Technology.
It is thing we should be having.
Also, Data should be familiar with the technology as well. Perhaps we don't need to steal the tech so much as get Commander Data the resources to set it up.

Though the USS Incursion was decommissioned when it was complained that it broke the Federation's agreement not to develop cloaking tech, so we could very well get that ship as well.

The important part here is that it could make a defiant-class vessel successfully impersonate a warbird in orbit of Romulus itself (the most paranoid of the major powers) and even following Species 8472 and traveling with them to discover hidden installations.
Very useful ability to have when we want to pretend to be something from a local canon.

Though honestly I want to put it on a probe droid just to have it pretend to be a police box.

So the main contention right now seems to be whether we include the White Mages and Darius with the infiltration team, or if we keep them with the assault team.

Given the composition and loadout, the infiltration team is meant to acquire recon data, recover VP-98's memory core, and when the fighting starts, use snipers to kill Apostles from far enough away that they don't even hear the gunshots before they're dead.

I don't believe that Darius and the White Mages should go with the Infiltration Team, because they'll be more useful with the Assault Team and they'll be better rested if they stay up on the Oncoming Storm.

Guys, we've got exographic scanners and micro-transporters for all of the Delta Greens, and probably some of the KI's by now.
This allows them to shoot through walls.
We are in a cloaked transport/bomber.

Instead of deploying on a rooftop that could be attacked, why not just shoot at Apostles from inside the comfort and cloaking field of the Al'Kesh? We just fly around, find an Apostle, and fire at him with the micro-transporters teleporting the bullets to outside the hull. Even if they could see the bullets, it would be them just materializing in mid-air. They have no defense against this "magic".

Of course, we need to test that the micro-transporters will work within the mist, first.

I fully support keeping Darius and the White Mages in the Assault Team. Sending Darius in with the Infiltration team is just asking for trouble, no matter how stealthy the Knights Inductors are compared to other Astartes (not of the Raven Guard/Alpha Legion). Sending the White Mages would encourage the Infiltration Team to take unnecessary risks, trusting the White Mages to heal them, while ideally they won't have to risk taking damage at all. Not to mention that the White Mages might not be familiar with a modern city or Japanese society (not that the Infiltration Team is, they're just more so than the White Mages).

Let's keep our cool and act like Spec Ops. That's what Delta Green does best. I can't guarantee the same for BLU team, but they'll have to restrain themselves.

We don't know exactly how many apostles Griffith has with him. From what the weather scientist said, it would seem that Griffith has a considerable amount of lesser-rank apostles to fill out his army. There are few, if any, regular humans in there. A *very* rough estimate would be more than 100 rank-and-file apostles in Griffith's army.

We can probably assume that there are a smaller group of more powerful apostles that Griffith has as an elite team or personal guard.

We neither want, nor have the means, to do a full invasion. We're looking at hundreds, possibly thousands, of these monster knights, over a landscape of skyscrapers and millions of people.
Infiltration/Resistance team is to work on mapping out enemy movements, linking up with local resistance, planting explosives, and scouting out sniper positions. All with the ultimate goal of keeping the rest of Griffith's men disorganized and cut off while our assault team sweeps/drops in to 'corner' Griffith in the open area around the shrine where we can bring the most force against him.

If it works, then the Delta Green snipers won't need to leave the protection of the Al'Kesh to hit their targets.

I agree that our goal is not a full-scale invasion; we don't have the manpower for it.
But we do need to be able to bring as much firepower to bear on Griffith's guards as possible, in order to deplete his forces enough that we can attack him directly without getting bogged down fighting his minions.

The rest of that force function as described here: >>17278764 with Al'kesh and cheap UAVs providing aerial recon when possible.
Task 5: As in >>17282956 - Gather intel, prepare to disrupt Griffith's forces when the attack comes.
Task 6: We need to either find a time in Griffith's routine when he is in the open to initiate the attack, or lure him into the open at our choosing with fake Guts sightings near the shrine (or real Guts if we happen to find him).
Task 7: Initiate disruptions and guerrilla strikes around the city. If we are luring Griffith out in Task 6, Task 7 should occur at the same time or just before.
Task 8: We drop the hammer. Al'kesh team, Leopard team, and Overlord team smash in and surround Griffith while he's in the relatively open area and let him and all with him have it with both barrels.

Leopard: Other half of KI, lead by Darius. 3 White Mages (one is Kyla). TG Recruits. X-COM Squad. 3 Tomahawks.
Overloard: Every other mech unit we have except the VF-25s.
VF-25s: Can enter/exit orbit on their own. They are to provide mobile support. To assault and infiltration teams as needed. Suggest trying to stick to fighter mode over the city proper, but all weapons and transformations are game at the Shrine against Griffith.

This could get hairy, so I want to suggest bringing the Indefatigable down over the Shrine as well, it's small and packs a punch with pin point accuracy. More importantly we might need to pull some technobabble solutions out of our butts, and Federation craft are great for technobabble excuses. Also- I want to have a Capital Ship scale reality emitter parked over this fight. Besides Griffith himself, I'm concerned about whatever he's cooking up at that shrine. The Hyaku Shiki is useless in Tokyo unless we fight giant monsters --- but the Brasta is more suited to fighting those better.

The Hyaku Shiki is basically around the performance level of the Delta Plus in mobile suit form, but since it can't transform, it's only somewhat better than the Gundam mk-II.

The other thing is that we can give the mobile suit-sized bazookas with buckshot ammo (hopefully for anti-infantry and to counter any gargoyle swarms) to the VF-25's and the Brasta, but the complication there are the hand plugs in the handles and the hands of the mechs.

I disagree. We should use them to head off enemies and kite them into the killzones.

We have 12 VF-25's, spare parts/spare plans disregarded. This means we have three flights of four planes each.

The plan is basically to enter the area of operations in fighter mode, and have the first flight use up all their missiles to wipe as much of Griffith's forces from maximum range (hopefully we can nail almost all the fliers this way). They then jettison ONLY the leg armor and switch to Gerwalk mode and basically begin the kiting and use the two beam guns and the two beam cannons to save on solid ammo.

The second flight is to play conservatively with their missile ammo and receive cover from the third flight.

The third flight will not come in with the Armored Pack and will basically use their increased speed and mobility to give cover.

On a side note, we need to stock extra gunpods on the Overlord because the VF-25's default gunpods cannot be opened up and have ammo replaced in the middle of a fight.

We can't wipe Griffith's forces. Period. There are too many spread across a dense city, and they aren't the prime objective. We just need to keep them tied up while the real fighting is going down.

I agree with having them operate in flights of four.
And using them to head off enemies is one of the things I mean by having them support the other teams.
Cutting off reinforcements to the assault area, taking out clusters of enemy for the infiltration teams, unloading missiles on Griffith, particularly when he takes flight, and otherwise being a mobile pain in the ass, filling in as needed.
Hell, if Griffith chooses to go airborne primarily, the VF-25s will be his primary opponents with the ground teams trying to support them instead.

    Infiltration team:
BLU, Sandmen, Delta Greens, Tosh, Abjurers, Psions, Finga... whatever his elfy name is.
    Heavy Metal team:
All the Mechs, and all the VFs.

    Still on Namek team:
    UNIT, SCPs, MIs, Prawns.
    Stays in orbit team:
Aurors, Seer Council, Egon, Data, Scientists

    Plan:
Infiltration team sets up positions, gets recon going, links up with any resistance forces and talks to them.
    Heavy Metal team waits.
    Ass Kickers team waits.
Still on Namek team is still in Antarctica.
Stays in orbit team Stays in orbit and tries to figure out how to Antarctica, how to Cheryl, and how to Ebon Night.

Idea is to get all the resistance forces working together, catch Griffith in the open, and then shove Heavy Metal and Ass Kickers teams up his ass.

Stay low, don't get spotted, move shit indoors, preferably in a nondescript warehouse, don't make too much noise, keep a low profile, and for the love of fuck don't piss off the horde.

The DGs, Sandmen, and Tosh should already be dispersing around Tokyo to get into a sniper position. They may well find something interesting, such as protagonists.

BLU should have the Engineer set up a teleport exit in some area at least 100 metres away, ideally 250 meters away or more. That will let our forces move out of our base, without leading any hostiles back to us. The Spy, Scout, Sniper, and anyone else who wants to go with them can help find potential good or bad guys.

I have no idea what the Abjurers and Psions could do. Read minds, detect magic, get wards against evil and anti-detection stuff up, I guess.
