    Mission: Downtime

Back up and running aftter a storm killed power to my ISP last week.

You are Sonia Reynard, Rookie Corvette Pilot for House Jarik-Dremine and you are recovering after having completed your second combat mission.

After your squadron responded to a luxury liner in distress you volunteered to help get troops aboard the vessel which had been captured by pirates and slavers. Despite having the option to stay on your ship you chose to follow your Chief Petty officer into the thick of things getting into your first firefights. Despite some close calls you and the Marines from your CO's ship helped secure most of the passengers before making a high speed assault on the ship's engine room.
Despite nearly being catured by pirates you were able to secure the FTL system and prevent the escape of the Pirates with their captives.

In the process you managed to get shot up by a sentry gun, but thankfully your armored vacuum suit held leaving you with bruises down your left side and potentially a cracked rib. Upon returning to your ship a medic assures you it isnt life threatening but to take it easy. Still, you should check in with a doctor back at base.

With the Luxury Liner secured the Marines from Lt Daytons ship were shuttled back while the remaining damage control personel returned to your ship. It was a good thing so many were aboard as the hull had been breached in the inital boarding operation.

It is just past 1700 hours when the squadron returns to base. All crew are ordered off the ship for debriefings to the displeasure of all. By the time you make your way past the crowd of crewmen disembarking and exit the ship local Engineers and dock workers have already begun moving repair equipment into place.

Chief Kavos catches up with you. "Pilot Sonia, you should get to your squardon briefing room, I have to attend to the rest of the crew."

It doesnt take long for you to run into Mike and Alex who were looking for you. Alex having been left behind because his ship was under repair and Mike being the only one in your flight who knows where the briefing room is.

The amphitheatre isnt hard to find, and is larger than you expected. Big enough to hold seventy people if all of the seating was occupied. Mike leads you over to some empty seats with '3rd flight' scrawled on them. This is the first time you've actually seen all of the other pilots from the squadron at once. A mix of men and women, mostly human but a couple of Dro'all, everyone in clothing that looks disheveled, be it jumpsuit or duty uniform. You meanwhile are still wearing the same vac-suit armor you'd worn while fighting, worried that some of the patched hull breaches might pop.

Knight Lt Dayton is the last to arrive, wearing a comparatively pristine looking jumpsuit with a jacket uniform overtop.

"First I'd like to congratulate everyone on a job well done." The LT starts off without preamble. "Because of what happened today I've been informed we're to recieve a unit commendation. Additional decorations may be forthcoming at a later time, but the important thing is that we stopped the ship from escaping with its high value passengers. Casulties among the Middle class passengers was light and only the Security personel took serious casulties among the crew."

Dayton walked over to the podium and began to tap away at the integrated console.
"In future engagements I want everyone to be aware that your commanding officers may ask for volunteers for dangerous assignments. While Pilot Sonia here may have come up with an acceptable boarding plan she was by no means obligated to carry it out herself. In the event of no one volunteering commanders may select someone at random for the job, or they could pick someone who screwed up recentry and needs to redeem themselves."

Everyone glanced over in the direction of Jarik, who had started the bar fight the night previous.

"Moving on, because of this incident and the current levels of pirates coming out of hiding there's talk of switching all commerce over to convoy travel. Most of the training squadrons are going to be diverted to escort duties, which includes us. Thankfully, we've got a good two or three days before this goes into effect so until then we're on stand down. Talk to your NCO's and make sure your ships and crews are in order. You'll all recieve a message with what time to report here for your next briefing."

After a few more minutes or explaining that no new ships were currently available for the squadron the Knight ordered everyone out.

"Not you Reynard." He stated as you were starting to drag yourself to your feet. Your wingmen glanced back curiously but left as they'd been ordered.

"Now you're going to tell me what the hell happened over there. You look beat up enough to pass for a police patrol sent down to ground level on a city world."

You briefly summarize what happened on the cruise liner. From the intial boarding to the firefights, rescuing the majority of the passengers and then finally the assault on engineering.

"You took a lot of risks compared to most officer candidates. Hell, looking at your record you hardly have any combat training outside of starship simulators. You're either some kind of insane thrillseeker, a Glory hog, or a damn fine officer in the making. Make sure you figure out which one you are before it kills you."
You tell him you'll think about it.

"Now I want your assessment of how you think you did out there. Do you think you massively screwed things up or that you did well. Be honest."

    Dayton winced.
"Yeah those are pritty nasty. He was likely dead before he knew what hit him. I have to agree with you. There's not much better you could have done. If you'd gone for the bridge you would have been dealing with a standoff with the pirate leader, and he had a human shield."

He looks away to think for a moment then turns back to you.

"One last thing before I send you on your way. Maybe I'm just being paranoid since this is my first squadron to command but I have to wonder who you really are, what do you want. Were you sent to infiltrate my command? Undermine my authority by showing up my inexperience? You're not black ops obviously, not with the way you nearly flubbed that checkpoint attack near engineering."

At your questioning glance he taps his temple.
"Helmet recorder. Officers and NCO's are equipped with them. I watched yours in the downtime before we returned to base but I wanted to see what you would tell me."
    "Oh." you reply
"So back to my previous question; are you really just a pilot and what is it you're really after here? Fame, riches, glory?"

He shakes his head, a smirk on his face. "You're dismissed."

"Aye sir." You answer and head for the door.

    "Oh wait! I almost forgot!"
    "Sir?"
"Please make sure your armor is put back on your ship. They're easier to repair than to replace, your techs will get to it eventually."
    "Yes sir."

You decide its time to head down to medical. The facilities on the station should have plenty of space even with the wounded crewmen back from the mission. You pass a couple of Marines just leaving, one with a large patch covering his abdomen.
"I hope that grenade I gave you was enough help." The wounded one says to you.
You tell him it was but you still need more practice with them. Then thank him again.

"Hey I was glad we had somebody with us who could fast talk those guys, they only pay us to shoot stuff."

Upon entering the ward you see its quite a bit different than you expected. Most of it is made up of one giant open area with the only division between each bed space being walls that retract into the floor. Machinery blocks with specialised medical gear traverse the room using tracks on the ceiling, able to descend to assist work on individual patients.

A medical scanner extends up from the floor just after you enter and takes readings. A holographic assistant then directs you through the room to an empty bed in the 'walking wounded' section.

Walls extend up on either side of the bed providing some seperation from the other patients. A timer is counting down from just over 5 minutes with the words 'estimated wait time' next to it.

A few seconds before it expires a man in a lab coat appears.
"Pilot rating, minor wounds, hairline fracture to one of your ribs, bruising along left side. Please remove your armor and the automated treatment system will look after you. Recovery time is expected to be about 4 days for the rib, 36 hous for the bruising with fast heal meds."

You mention you have a boxing tournament coming up.

The doctor sighs. "Its always something. Look I can get you completely fixed up within 12 hours but it'll cost extra since the meds for that are normally restricted to active battlefield use. We're talking 3 weeks salary."

"I'm going to have to put you out for an hour to be sure you dont move and screw up the procedure."

You wake up an hour and twenty minutes later according to the wall display. A computerized voice speaks to you.
"Medical procedure complete, slightly behind schedule. Your doctor has requested that you avoid strenuous activities for the next 8 to12 hours. Nano bone knitting has repaired damage but will require additional time to set properly. Bruising has been repaired, but will remain visually unchanged for up to 24 hours. A bill has been forwarded to your military account. Please have a nice day."

It feels like someone stuck thermite or something else on fire inside your chest where it was cracked but the pain is lessening. Slowly. Oh well, time to get that armor back to the ship!

Dicide to take your time getting back to the ship, breathing too hard hurts like a motherfucker for the moment. As you approack the dock you have to weave your way past mechanics and dock workers setting up repair systems for your ship before reaching the airlock. Bundles of power cables snake through the airlock doors, some hooked to the bulkheads on either side. The areas adjacent to the bridge are quiet, with work concentrating on the outer hull and power systems.

It's a simple task to find the locker the suit was from and put it back inside. Some of the other you check are still empty while others already have their suits back in them. Testing the doors you find you cant open the ones with suits still inside them.

"Access denied. Insuficient clearance level." The ship's computer informs you. Oh well. Onward to find the rest of the squad.

"I really need to check out that boxing ring..." you decide.
Whipping out your communicator you look up Mike and Alex asking them to meet you in the station central hub.
"I want to check out that boxing arena before we have to do any fighting." You inform them.
"Good idea. Maybe we can get some practice in?" Sugggests Alex.
You're not sure about that just yet.

It turns out to be a good thing you met up with the others, Mike knows his way around the station and the areas the arenas are in can be a bit difficult to get to. You see why when you get there. Everything has a new look to it, as though it might have been installed earlier that year and most of those present seem to either be higher ranking NCO's or officers.

"Suddenly I feel a little out of place." Remarks Alex.
"Whatever." Is Mike's response heading straight for the empty boxing ring. "I'm more concerned with how we're going to get a good size audience to make money off of, not just bets."

Catching up you see that there isnt much room around the ring itself, just room for benches, water and med stations and doors leading to change rooms.

"Hey are you guys the ones that reserved this ring?" Someone behind you asks.

Before you can speak up Mike does so. "Yeah we're going to be fighting some mechanics and taking some bets."

The man's eyes almost seem to light up upon hearing that. "Have you picked a time and date yet? Its part of my job to ensure games and matches are televised across the station. Why if its popular enough you could even make some money from it."

The three of you give him a less than amused look.
"Had to try. The station runs open betting pools for live broadcast events and we keep a cut of the proceeds. You and whoever else was competing would also get *some* of the money."

"What about our own private bets with the mechanics?" Asks Mike.
"You can still make private bets, that's perfectly legal, but the public bets offer the chance at a much larger pool of winnings. Think it over, and let me know when that fight is."

You spend some time looking through the station directories trying to find the mechanics you ran into the previous night. They all appear to be away or busy at the moment but you leave a message that the fight is on for tomorrow night. They can still reschedule though as long as it's before midnight tomorrow.
You also make sure to mention the broadcast. You're not certain what to think of it though your initial instinct is to say no.
"First rule about fight club is dont talk about fight club." Mentions Mike. What the hell does that even mean? One of your siblings that watches movies all the time might know.

Finally you resolve to try and get hold of one of the Marines you were fighting along side today. Maybe they know a thing or two about hand to hand they'd be other to teaching you. Fater some looking around in the station database you find a listing of some of the Marines assigned to your CO's ship. Uncertain about which ones are still in medical or even KIA you decide not to leave messages just seeing if you can find one who will respond to a call.

You and Alex tour around the station for a few hours with Mike leading the way. You're starting to get a better idea of the layout now that you're not in a rush to go someplace. Most of the turbolifts and trams are reserved for priority use, the design of the station seems to be based around giving crews enough excercise in a day by making them walk. That's annoying. Maybe its to make the lower classes walk more?
In any case it should be harder for you to get lost now. The only really difficult place is the central hub where everything is packed together.

After getting something to eat you part ways and head back to your temporary quarters. With the ship under repair your move will be delayed again.

Before turning in for the night you write up another letter to your parents. You dont give exact details of what happened today, worried it might compromise security, but you do let them know you were getting shot at. You let your Dad know you understand now why he didnt want you in the infantry. As much as you thought his old stories were over the top you can see now just how bad things must have been. You end the letter reasuring them you dont plan on getting into any more gunfights for a good long while.

When you wake up in the morning you find a message from Linda. You'd left one for her the night before in the hopes she might show up today.

Playing it back she sounds a bit upset.
"What? You want me to hang out and do some Fighting?! I didnt sign up for that, I was supposed to be the navigator on a freighter but my scores were too weak. I got kicked down to a combat training squadron. I'm doing everything I can right now to get better at navigation so I can get a transfer. Helping out with the boarding was one thing, those people were in trouble, but I'm not letting anything but my duties distract me right now Ms Reynard."

    Oh. Oh well.

Your ribs are no longer as sore when you show up at the arena. A few of the pilots from First and second flight are already milling around, none of them seeming that familiar with boxing.

"What are you guys doing here?" You ask.
"What do you think?" Replies one of the guys. "We got dragged into this by Windsor over there because he started the fight and we were nearby. We have to fight too."

The noise of metal tapping the floor approaches from behind and you turn to see a human Marine wearing fatigues with an exoskeleton encasing his lower half.

"I thought I was just helping one person out not a whole crew of clueless pilots. Name's Jing Ki. I got hit in one of the inner courtyards on the Liner yesterday."

You introduce yourself and ask if he's okay.
"I'll be fine, I didnt want the cybernetics and the problems that go with them so they're cloning the leg that I'm missing. The rest of my legs have to stay in neuro-isolation using the exoskeleton so I dont freak out from the pain."

You give Jing a rundown on what happened with the barfight and the boxing match scheduled for later today.
"That's not a lot of time. You all have to be careful not to wear yourselves out on training before the fight but I can tell you the basics. Get into the ring, somebody else get in there with her. Where are the boxing gloves?"

Mike and Alex thankfully chose that moment to arrive.

"Please god tell me one of you has boxed before!" Jing shouts as he and one of the pilots throw some gloves into the ring.

    "I have." Says Alex.
"I can fight but I've never boxed." Replies Mike.
"Okay you three first then you can help the others."

Training starts off slow, with the marine demonstrating different stances and you trying to mimic them. Then on into defense and attack, and the importance of keeping in the move. Alex doesnt seem that good at first but he's more experienced than you, able to fend off your blows with increasing speed. Maybe he's just out of practice.

"Alright you two, lets have a light match. Hits landed count as knockouts, that way we dont have anyone getting too hurt."

    Roll 3d20 for boxing.

Your initial attack catches Alex by surprise, using as much speed as you can to dance around him and land a hit. You take the first 'round' if it can be called that easily. The second round lasts all of three seconds as Alex gets a punch through your defenses almost immediately. Round three goes a bit better but it's clear to you that your wingman has gotten back into the swing of boxing and after half a minute ha lands another hit.

    Well so much for that.
"What do you think? Jing asks you.
"I think I need more practice." you admit.
"Well I hate to break it to you but you shouldnt be doing much more training before the fight or you could risk premature injury or wearing yourself out."

[ ] Keep doing training for yourself anyways
    [ ] Take it easy
[ ] Only help the inexperienced ones train

You spend the rest of the morning helping the other pilots learn how to box, though weather their ability could be called something approaching skill might be a stretch. Mike meanwhile has to be reminded not to use his feet or legs when fighting. You wont know for sure how everyone will fare until the fight...

Jing wishes you luck and encourages everyone to take it easy for the rest of the day and to avoid alcohol.

You check your messages after lunch and find that the mechanics have accepted. They'll arrive just before 2000 hours. A refree has been notified of the match.

The Mechanics also say they wouldnt mind having it televised so as to further humiliate you all.

"Thank you all for attending, it has been some time since I've refereed a good boxing match. The rules are simple. One on one with Rounds to be of three minute duration, and one minute's time between rounds. Use of your Fists with Gloves are the only acceptable weapon.
    No wrestling or hugging.
If a combatant goes down they have 10 seconds to be allowed get back up.
No hanging on the ropes, and keep it clean!

First match will be Pilot rating Sonia Reynard versus Chief Mechanic Ahani Daska!
    Combatants enter the ring!

As you enter you get your first real idea of how big the Chief Mechanic is. She's wearing a thin jumpsuit but that does little to hide that the other woman must mass close to double your own. So much for a fair fight.

Navy regulations only cover on duty activities, but previously called and scheduled out fights are permitted even with officers. Most officers of Knight rank or higher would refuse a challenge by an enlisted man.
Striking a superior officer outside of a pre arranged challenge is possible grounds for execution.

Well you were worried this might happen, and here it is, you're in over your head. On the bright side this isnt likely to get you killed the same way shooting at things might.

The big mechanic starts off slow, like a freight train might, and fends off your attempts at attacking. You dodge a few good swings but one finally connexts sending you sprawling. You get back on your feet but it's not good enough to win this round and soon you're down again. The bell rings before you can get up.

    Round one to Ahani Daska!

After a minute's rest the both of you go back at it. You're getting better at this you can tell but the larger woman is like the proverbial rape train with no breaks. You're knocked down twice but roll to your feet quickly. The second round ends in a draw but it's clear who was winning the whole time.

In the third round you at last hit your stride, keeping on the move and staying out of reach you land your first real hits of the fight. You keep up the pressure until one of your punches staggers Daska forcing her down. She's about to stand back up when the bell rings.
"WHAT!?" Shouts the mechanic at the noise. "You've gota be kidding me, a draw with this little fairy? I call for a tie breaker!"

    Tie Breaker Y/N ?

When the two of you set up to fight again you see the Dro'all Mechanic is breathing hard despite the rest break, her cheeks are even turning a darker shade of yellow.

"Are you okay?" You ask before the match starts.

"Shut up and fight!" She yells at you before charging. You barely get out of the way, taking a rough hit to your arm. You do what you can to duplicate your last fight, trying to get in on the flanks and stay away from the heavy swings. One of the other woman's punches connects and stuns you for a second or two bouncing you off the ropes, then you're back into it. In the last minute things devolve into Daska continuiously trying to charge you to put her entire weight into each hit. All it does though is slow her down more. Just as well since just one of those hits might have finished you for the night.

You land a final one-two punch before your opponent is forced off her feet.

"Round over!" Shouts the Refree. "Round four goes to Sonia Reynard!"

"Bah!" Complains the Mechanic, still breathing hard. "You'd have never beaten me a week ago. The rest of you better take down the other pilots hear me?!" She shouts at the rest of the crew before climbing down from the ring and heading for one of the change rooms.

"What the hell happened?" You ask your wingmen. "I though I was screwed after that second fight, she just slowed right down."

"Must be that time of the year." Replies Mike grinning. "I dont suppose you could spare some cash I kinda bet against you."

"No Mike I dont have any money right now I spent it all on medical treatments. What do you mean 'that time of the year'?"
"Didnt you pay attention in biology class? Most Dro'all go through a sex change every one of their standard years."

In total the other Pilots manage to rack up
4 more wins 2 ties and 2 losses against the mechanics. Jarik Windsor who instigated the whole disaster walks away happy with a tie, while Mike is angry in general after losing because of having to 'fight fair.'

Put together you all made a little bit of money off of bets but in your case it doesnt come anywhere near putting a dent in your lack of money for the short term. Kell Oba from First flight was thrashed the worst and has sworn off boxing. You recieve a message from Chief mechanic Ahani Daska later that night.
"I want a rematch in six months. Dont get killed until then. Also quit getting holes shot through your ship they're a bitch to fix."
