The main issue iss the interaction with the giants and the people has not been clearly decided on. So the inhabitants act like helpful parasites or do they interact with their home giants in some manner as I see both ways as plausible, I'm leaning towards the latter personally but a combination of both would be great to

A bit of both. Giant dwellers fight off the massive parasites, and they send out "Boogie Knights" to help the giants find mates. Some cities would obviously be a bit more dickish, seeking to abuse or control their giants somehow.

Yes, I like it. For example, I think when there are two paths and the creauture doesn't feel strongly about either, then a suggestion should be effective, but if you try to tell it to turn back, it probably won't.

    >I think the proposal was that there is some form of communication, buts its more subliminal than anything. Ideas and images rather than actual conversation.

Yeah, my impression was that the giant doesn't know it's getting its information from the humans (it may be unable to fathom something that small and insignificant), while the humans are never sure if it's their efforts that found the giant a mate or if he just knows where he's going. But they hope it helps, and it's institutionalized ritual by this point. It's good for the community to think you're helping your nation-world out.
    >> Anonymous 02/06/12(Mon)20:27 No.17835687
    >>17835641
true, but I think that both could feasibly work. subliminal messaging could work well especially for the majority of the quadrupedal giants while some form of actual communication for the bipedal ones. Of course this could be switched around from giant to giant, but it adds a layer of depth to how the different giant cultures would develop.

I am vehemently against this sort of thing being possible to manage. These things are basically forces of nature, to humans. Unless the humans are somehow at a level to perform tidal shifts or something, they shouldn't be able to meaningfully harm their host.

If this is the case, it had better be really small. And the fact that they can communicate meaningfully with it should make the humans wonder if it's even the same type of being as the rest.

Probably less "communication" and more "offerings, prayers, and sacrifices"? Something where it's not clear that they're getting through, and they have to figure out whether their cries have been answered by what ends up happening.

Think omens and rituals, like the Romans? Even in their myths they didn't have the gods coming down and directly interacting with humans.

I said "seeking", not doing. But the giants aren't invincible, they mate, give birth, and die like any other creature. Some psychotic king might try and succeed at lobotomizing one, but since he doesn't know how to brain it would just tip over, leaving the city destroyed and everyone at the mercy of the ground's endless horrors.

Big trade-meeting happening over the next few months. Ol' Imrisa has been eyeing the World Walker to the north for a while now, and we're reckoning she's building up the courage to say hello. We were thinking of putting out a few lines, sending some people over and negotiating for some supplies. Been ages since she's had children, so far as the records go. We're hoping the ol' girl is still fertile enough. She's a tough old broad, and I'm proud to live on her. I just want somewhere for my grandchildren to live on.

I don't like that one quite as much (and here's why): "World Walkers" keeps the ambiguity of whether that's meant to imply that the Walkers themselves are the world, or is an acknowledgment of the fact that these massive beings are the only things that cam comfortably walk the world.

You know, because they step on everything else. And also the ground might be toxic. It's their world, you're just living in it.

Imagine it, giant winged snakes with cities along their spine, the only inhabitants of these World-devourers are Marauders and Savages.

    Quetzalcoatl.

Even trees would be a bit of a problem starting out, I'm sure because of roots a tree would only be able to grow to a certain point before having to be cut down, to prevent the roots from growing too deep into the City's back.

For years the nightmares persist, for ever creature, every mortal and giant, even the greatest of the walking worlds feel ill at ease. At the height of the madness when all the land is in panic, it stirs.

A long slumbering nightmare that lives beneath the earth, maybe below the waves as well, slowly giving birth to an army of demonic creatures on it's dark and dire carapace. Then it emerges amongst earthquakes and tidal waves to feed on lesser beings, which is everything, and grow ever stronger, only resting again if it is beaten down by the combined might of the world. Or after it and it's children has consumed all.

    A tarrasque among tarrasques.

One thing to note, if the titans/colossi are worshipped, then some people are going to worship the nightmare.

I propose the cult of the nightmare below.
A cult that is dedicated to awakening the nightmare.
    The exact reasons for doing this vary from sect to sect however they can normally be split into two groups;
Those who seek to awaken the nightmare so as to colonise it.
And those who seek to use the nightmare to eradicate the walkers.

You have minerals. Some places have a "Catcher" in place, which is sort of like a giant diaper of sorts. Other Titans tend to stick around for a bit after eating and such, in sort of "Rest period".

In this "Rest period" Works in the feet are able to fly down and gather the minerals in the feces, thus making a Titan a completely self sufficient thing.

Different diets would give different minerals, so trade is the main form of interaction between nations.

Arachnotopians spin their clothes from spiderwebs. The webs of the colossus is far too big, howeever, but it's not the only spider around. Arachnotopia has large herds of regular giant spiders, which they use for meat and clothing.
    What do they wear? Spidersilk.
    What do they eat? Spidermeat.
What is their armor made of? Spider chitin.
What are their arrows coated with? Venom.
What do they ride on? What drags their plows? What drags their carriages and wagons? Spiders. Giant spiders.

They even invented the spider net thrower. It is a throwing mechanism that throws spiderwebs. "Sure, it works with spidersilk and tangles the target up," said the general to the engineer. "But what if we add tiny spiders to the net?"
"Sir," replied the engineer. "Isn't that enough spider already? Don't you think we're overdoing it with the spiders?"

The answer was no, there can never be enough spiders.

well, it's a bit rushed but heres what i've got. i decided to make it fly the same way squid and deep sea eels do, rather than straight up wings. it keeps the momentum and shape of the snake intact. also the membrane on the bottom side of the snake acts like ratlines to it's inhabitants.

I know that a lot of our work has been based on the walkers ignoring the people on them, but some of the art depicts cities that would surely be burdensome to them. Eventually they'll take notice.

I imagine some city becoming too great for the walker to handle, so it shakes some of it off, or gets another walker to smash a few blocks off or something.

Unless all the buildings are made of balsa wood.

So it's like, the Titan grows stronger every time the city grows larger. Just like a human get's used to getting fatter over the years, or you get used to lugging around a fucking massive back-pack in Highschool.

My main issue with "necessary part of the world" is, if we DO want to make this a setting, killing the World Walker-Eater seems like a great final quest. Unless finding a way to keep the world sustainable without World Walkers having to be devoured is also a part of the quest?

Also, is anyone going to update the wiki page with all the new stuff we've got? The official name World Walkers and the different classifications of fuckhueg beings, how the inhabitants communicate with their Walker (i.e. via ritual where they're still not actually completely sure it's having any real effect, but it's a community-building thing anyway), the Nightmare, the extra writefaggotry and drawfaggotry we've gotten...

I'd do it, but I'm already doing a terrible job of going to bed and I don't want to make it worse. Mostly I just want to make sure this shit gets put in there before we steamroll right along to a new thread and forget to add in the old stuff we've decided on.

Well, I always thought it would be an interesting twist.

Imagine it, after tearing the Great Devourer from the skies and slaying it, saving all of the World Walkers for all time. It could open up to a second campaign. Decades, maybe centuries later, long after the original heroes have died. People see that there are more Titans, far more than there ever were before. Hardly a week goes by without seeing another Titan, another city.

Then it occurs to them once the food for the Titans starts to dwindle, or more Titan bodies are seen, caused by violence between the Titans due to the decreased Territory.

Then they hear rumors, legends? Myths? that the Great Devourer, the World Shaper and the End Bringer was actually needed for the world, and that there have been whisperings among the Kings and nobles of ancient texts found, thought to belong to the End Riders. Of an ancient egg that never broke, that never grew warm or could be broken.

The Death of the One Devourer opens up a second campaign millenia later, the quest for the World Shaper's egg.

There are rumors of few Titans that are so massive they have their own climates, plantlife, and wildlife. Even its people have developed their own culture that cannot be found anywhere else.

Also while we're establishing the dietary/biological differences between Colossi and Titans, they do need to be capable of interbreeding. Or at least have the same desire to mate with each other as they do with their more similar brethren. Blame OP picture.

This is perfect. Huge and strong enough to support its own climate and ecosystem, and a civilization wouldn't add much weight if they made their homes in the mountains.

A question: A lot of these seem like unique individuals. If we're calling them "parts of the world" then that doesn't matter, but how would they reproduce, precisely?

Colossi are inorganic constructs, they are more like the creature in the opening post, they may or may not be humanoid.

Giants are just giants, they are noway near as large and are not world walkers.

World Walkers are anything big enough to build a city/small nation on. They're so big that they don't even register the existence of humans, and are subdivided into Colossi (made of rock or some other inanimate material - can still be roughly humanoid in shape) and Titans (big and made of flesh. Tend to wear their cities rather than have them built into them). Humans living on World Walkers "communicate" them via the performance of communal, religious rituals (e.g. to help their WW find a mate or food), though no-one's sure if it has any real effect (if it does, it's subconscious), or if the WW runs across food or a suitable mate afterward of his own doing. They do it anyway because it helps strengthen the community and they like to think it helps.

Giants are significantly smaller, capable of supporting maybe one family of humans. They'll communicate with humans and are not related to World Walkers, but they choose to carry humans around to imitate World Walkers as a gesture of awe/respect/etc.

    Clear enough?

This stuff is supposed to be getting on the wiki at some point.

How big would you say the World Shaper is?

I think that it should be seemingly impossibly long, if only slightly thicker than an "average" Humanoid World Walker's arm.

It's hard to imagine what it would be MADE of, a Fleshy World Shaper doesn't sound right, and having it be purely rock doesn't seem right either.

Something compels me to say "solid" quicksilver.

Last term, which you probably haven't seen, is the Nightmare. There's only one of this guy, and he's the only thing with a decent chance of taking a given World Walker without going down himself. He's the apex predator - a huge flying dragon thing who basically keeps the World Walkers' numbers in check. This guy is naturally an absolute horror to anyone who lives on a World Walker (read: most of humanity). The total number of WWs is anywhere from 24-48, from what we've figured out so far.

We've had the idea of the protagonist from Shadow of the Colossus as basically a BBEG of the setting. "Mortal who can kill World Walkers" is good with us, as long as there's only one of 'em. After all, most people LIVE on the things. You'd have to be pretty fucking evil to start killing them deliberately.

    Personally I'm against it.
Having an item that lets a single person kill a world walker seems a bit anti-climactic to me.
Killing a world walker in my mind would involve a large number of people and an awful lot of effort not to mention luck. That's assuming that it is even possible.

    No.

These creatures should be beyond humans in every way. The only thing that can kill a world-walker is another world-walker, or the Nightmare.

Having a human-sized sword that can kill a titan is like having a bacteria-sized sword that can kill a human. Can you imagine a single bacteria, without reproducing itself or causing infection, killing a human being? Impossible.

Titans carry humans in their clothes (on the insides of jewelery, in very elaborate hats like the second image posted in this thread, in crevices in clothing...) Someone from the last thread mentioned humans building rope ladders and whatnot to get from "village" to "village" across various garments and adornments.

People living on Titans tend to have it harder. Colossi tend to house the really big metropoli. People on Titans are generally spread out into more, smaller settlements.

David shivered at a gust of biting wind, crossing his arms tightly beneath his woolen jacket. Leaning in to the wind, he quickened his pace, eager to escape the open air and bitter cold. The morning was clear and bright, save for a few errant wisps of fog that still clung to the craggy upper reaches. Distant dirigibles scudded through the blue sky, sunlight glinting off their steel frames.

Turning a corner in the rough-hewn road, a grin spread across David's face as the city of Redmount spread across his view. Built right into the stone sides of their Walker, the cities ancient buildings seemed to crawl up the sides of mountain, stacked endlessly atop one another. Bright banners and flags snapped smartly, advertising noble breweries, general stores, renowned gunsmiths, and the myriad other businesses that had sprung up. The narrow streets were packed with innumerable crowds, flowing up and down and inwards and outwards. The noise of their movement was clear even from the bottom of the city, where David stood.

With a spring to his step, the boy skipped into the city, one hand firmly over his coat pocket. It wasn't often that he had coin to spare, and he was determined to make the most of what he had. Hopefully, if he had more delivery jobs like this one, he would get to make more trips into the city. Maybe he would even be able to buy some sweets from the confectioner, if he had money to spare at the end of the day!

A rumble filled the earth then, and a great grinding sound, as though a boulder where being smashed against a cliff face. With a colossal thunder, the city lurched forward, sending unwary pedestrians stumbling to their knees. Loose furniture and goods were thrown into the air, pelting unfortunates with leftover lunches and silverware.

I did have a setting colossi. They didn't breed mind you, but with magic having returned, the planes of Africa simply stood up and started walking around in circles.

With new magic related storms/natural disasters claiming the entire land(s), people noticed how the collosi were never caught in them, constantly wandering around and in between them.
So the people adjusted to a nomad lifestyle, carefully following the colossi, without getting caught up and destroyed by a colossus directly, but also naturally not being left behind or getting caught up in a storm.
The capital, lead by a former Earthdawn character, built the capital right on top of the largest collosus. And to be frank, a safe haven to anyone hunted by Dragons, not that the people are very keen on accepting outsiders.

The giants do whatever their inscrutable god-minds decide they want to do. All we know is that sometimes this involves eating or mating.

People live on them because life on the surface is hostile. Having one of these things tromping around near you is not good for your settlements, and building on World Walkers allows for more permanent homes.

Also something about the ground-based flora maybe being toxic.

David weathered the lurching movement with the ease of long practice, one hand latched onto a steel rail, his stance wide. Within seconds of their commencement, the great rumbling stopped, allowing the grumbling of the crowd to be heard once more.
"That's 'is third step today," A wiry old dock worker said admiringly, "He mus' be feelin' sprightly."
David nodded wisely at the statement, then promptly forgot the whole occasion. He had an important job to do, after all.

Glancing at the burden he carried once more, David cast about the street, searching for a building marked with the same insignia. Although he could not read the signs that marked every street corner, David had wandered the cities streets many times, and had come to navigate more by instinct than conscious thought. It was the work of mere minutes before the boy discovered his target.

A sharp rap on the door summoned a portly, well attired servant, who regarded the scruffy boy with an expression of distaste.
"Evenin' sir," David began, drawing himself up self-consciously. "I's been hired to deliver this package to yer' home. ' Was told I'd be paid for me services."
The last part was lie, David had been paid in advance. But it was always worth trying for a few extra coins. Holding the package out hopefully, David smiled in what he hoped was an endearing manner.

The butler gingerly accepted the package, wiping his fingers as he set it aside.
"Here, boy," He said brusquely, holding out a pair of half-dollars. "A bit of payment for your troubles. Now get yourself gone."
David quickly snatched the pair of coins from the servants hands, scampering off before the man could think twice about it.

Chuckling, the boy ran back into the city, eager to spend his newly acquired wealth.

Huh. Kinda had a different idea.

In every generation, there are humans or other sapient mortals who are said to be born with Giant Spirits. They, in turn can forge a mental imprint with a giant, becoming a sort of hybrid creature, the human (elf, gnoll, kobold, whatever) is the Guide, who provides the alien intelligence of a giant with the goals and ambitions of an intelligent being, rather than somewhat alien-beast intelligence.

The giant however provides the Body. The Body has needs. Absorbing and relinquishing magic, living around comfortable leylines and manapools, fucking, and so on.

Cities are founded on the back of these Titans because they tend to be safe, as well as the trade nexuses of Kingdoms, the giants being a kind of citadel unto themselves, often enough, brought to a vaguely controllable level with Guides. "Vaguely", mind you, since even as Bodies become more human with the exchange, Guides become more alien, and in then end Guide/Bodies have more in common with other giant-symbionts than the respective races they came from, especially when a Body wants to and eventually does fuck and the other way around.

So, you know. A lot of adventure hooks there. Helping a Guide tame a Body, kingdoms trying to keep a hold of things when their Guide takes a city off to do some unknowable giant thing or something. Wars between different kingdoms on the backs of giants.

Oh yeah, and different types of giants doing different things and whatnot. Rocky giants digging and building mountains and passes, humanoid giants leading flocks and herds of beasts, hybrids doing other stuff, and Guides bonding with all different kinds of giants...

I was writing before it hit auto-sage.

    I'm kinda slow.

I suppose I'll continue this next thread. Maybe I'll actually get past the build up and get to some action.

Next thread probably isn't for several hours yet. Most of us have gone/are going to bed.

That's what I meant. It's getting late here too.

Well, feel free to re-archive this, then, since it's got new writefaggotry since I did it and I'm still on a timer. See http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html for the appropriate tags and whatnot.

    . . . I'm not sure what you mean by re-archive.
    >> Anonymous 02/07/12(Tue)00:42 No.17839049
    >>17839020
Same as when you try to archive it in the first place, except it updates the archive of the thread
    >> sirbriggz 02/07/12(Tue)00:45 No.17839090
    We are archived.

And we do this because, while Sup/tg/ DOES auto-update, it does so very slowly. many times when new stuff is posted after bump limit, it gets lost because sup/tg/ doesn't get a chance to auto-update before the thread 404s.
