Don't worry though, it doesn't make you dote on cats. It only does that to mice, by making them attracted to cat urine (does not turn out well for the mouse, let me tell you). In humans, infection with T.gondii is just associated with lower IQ, decreased motor performance, and increased rates of schizophrenia. In men, it also makes them more suspicious, guilt-prone, and socially dependent than their peers while women become more warm-hearted, trusting, and self-sufficient. These traits become more pronounced the longer the person has been infected.
Don't have a cat? Don't worry, that's not actually how it spreads! It's often found in undercooked meat or just free in the environment where you can breathe it in. It's estimated anywhere from 20-30% of people all over the world are infected, though rates in some countries are MUCH higher. |
