Or, hey, what's this roaring sound, whooshing past what I'm suddenly gonna call my head?

    PREVIOUSLY, ON METAHUMAN RENAISSANCE:
Continuing his battle in the Dream World, Dan figured out that to leave, he needed to somehow neutralize or awaken Red in order to leave. Attempting to do so, he engaged in fisticuffs with her, ultimately winning their impromptu martial arts match. However, Dan was disabled by the Red Star's mind-lightning, and would have been removed if not for the timely mental intervention of Doctor Moreau, who proceeded to kick ass. Upon awakening, Dan was once again besieged by a teleporting Syrpent, with her acting stranger than usual before yanking him out of a window and dragging him down in the general direction of his doom.

To your surprise, you find yourself falling, tumbling into a space which is best described as "the air", which is not where you were about a second ago, which was best described as "standing on a surface". Very shortly, you get the idea that you will meet something best described as "the ground".

"Red" unhooks from you, leaps away and to the side of the building both of you just vacated. She sticks out a palm, lighting first, into the wall and starts grinding down it, leaving a trail of crimson sparks and hunks of debris in her wake. But she'll also probably make it to the ground. Besides, she can just portal out. You, on the other hand, are currently plummeting to the ground through the empty air between two high-rise buildings, with an alley composed almost, but not quite, entirely of asphalt. Your brain, in a very detached fashion, notes that this would be bad, and you should probably do something about it. Sooner, rather than later.

    Barrier Up.
Air evocation to slow our descent.
Try to follow Red if she's beneath us.

First, spread out your body to get more wind resistance - then try to spread out your barrier as wide as you can, this'll slow you down.

After that, start running down the side of the building, this is for you ParkourAnon! IT'S YOUR TIME!

Barrier does not spread. It is a field which envelops you.

Deploying it would, however, decrease damage.

Instead of running down the building, shouldn't we run up it?
So that we don't accelerate our fall?

    >> Anonymous 03/11/12(Sun)17:28 No.18290016
    >>18289967
Doesn't work that way, we'd just start falling again, only backwards.. By running down we can control the fall and redirect it into forward momentum when we reach the ground.

    >>18289843
As an addendum, see if we can't use a Psibolt directly beneath us to offset our downward flight and slow us down, if not generate some extra height. Use energy to propel us and keep us from hitting more lethal velocities.

    >>18290016
I mean run up the wall as in gain traction.
We wouldn't be able to actually move up it physically, we'd just fall more slowly.
    >> Anonymous 03/11/12(Sun)17:31 No.18290058
    >>18290027
At best, we'd lose the current momentum we have, and then be left hanging on the side of the building way the fuck up. What then?

No, I think it's better if we do a controlled fall.

REALLY wish we had the SERAPH module right now, we really need to look into getting that once we go into space.

So the agreed move is pop barrier and then Evocation to slow your fall? (Keeping in mind you are entitled to a reflexive Agility, Athletics or Endurance test to reduce damage anyway)

I don't think Psibolt is going to do anything but soften the ground. Since it's pure friction created by psionic energy, it probably doesn't push us back when we fire it any - meaning it'd be useless to slow our descent.

She's slowing her descent to, so unless she portals out (which you can't stop anyway), she'll end up at ground level with you eventually.

    >>18290130

We haven't really discussed this a whole lot, but the psibolts aren't like throwing matter around. I seriously doubt throwing a couple of them, or however many you can get off would slow you down any more than flapping your arms.

(2x1 on Barrier, so all Falling damage is reduced by two)
(3x9 and 3x10 on Evocation, so you slow your descent down so that you can land on your feet and take no damage anyway, no Agility required)

First, you snap your barrier on, and rotate around, feet first. This is what Cyreans experiencing unplanned freefall are supposed to do. Of course, most of them are encased head to toe in heavy, power-assised armor and tend to have potent psychic implants. Sail past Red, who looks at you as you go by, and her eyes seem to be glowing red. Not just the irises, the whole eye.

But, no time to dwell on that, you're falling a very long distance to your death. Luckily, you're prepared for this kind of eventuality, in away. You were already considering this spell, since you were planning on putting it on a permanent enchantment to your shoes. It only goes to show this was a good idea. "Ximocahua nihuetzi!" You put as much effort as you can into the spell. Air wraps around you in an invisible bubble, distorting your view of the world. Your ears hurt as the air pressure around you shoots up, your blob of heavy air basically breaking itself up to slow your descent. You smack into the asphalt feet first, but catch yourself and are able to stand up as the bubble pops, sending a torrent of wind around the alley, blowing around debris and knocking over small objects.

A burning red meteor smacks into the alleyway a number of yards from you, sending up a plume of dust and debris, forcing you to shield your eyes as a couple of the larger chunks 'ping' off your barrier.

Despite those hours you spent watching Dragonball Z, you lob a couple psibolts in to the debris cloud and hear them smash into some inanimate objects. Red steps out of the cloud, all eye-glow and not quite right. Her implacable nature reminds you of someone else, but you don't have time to place it as she draws a glyph in the air, and then hurls an invisible ball of force at you, warping space as it passes. You shoulder roll, and the dumpster behind you is struck. Its surface warps and deforms inward, like it was struck with a giant spinning ball.

You stand there, squared off, as glass and other shrapnel from above comes down in a rain, all dramatic like.

What are we good at? Parkour.

I say we fire up the air evocations and bait Syrpent across town, taking side streets to minimize casualties if possible. The Ashwoods will either send in their private resources or understand we're baiting Syrpent across town in the hopes of attracting someone strong enough to help out.

Throwing a damaging attack doesn't leave you with a bad taste, but throwing a damaging attack which also heals us in the process does? I think your logic is flawed. This is the way necromantic healing works - you take life force from someone else and bring it to you. If we have to heal, we either have to use a willing person or an enemy, in which case we're killing two birds with one stone, so to speak.

This might be true, but Syrpent is clearly beyond our ability to subdue on our own. We need police help. Calling Philips to warn the police while we fucking book it seems like a good idea.

Throwing an attack that simultaneously heals us, I have no issue with, mechanically. It's just the nature of the spell -- stealing the essence of others -- that leaves me wary. Fortesque is a defender of his friends and humanity, not a leech. It's a weapon in our arsenal, but it should be used sparingly, considering its design.

I would sooner take essence from someone else for ourselves than just simply wound them. Doing anything else is simply wasteful. It's like throwing something away instead of recycling it because you don't like the idea of something made out of something that's used. The context in which we shouldn't use necromancy is when we aren't wounded and/or don't want to make mages startled by us. If we're wounded, though, it should be one of our primary offensive tools.

    >>18291350
That's fair. It's like not liking recycling because you know that your friends don't like it and you've heard that only bad people do it even though it leaves no noteworthy pollution. In this setting, necromancy could easily be called vitacation, because it's the manpulation of life energy.
    >>18291363
Except he said in the last thread, literally the only way to use this to heal someone is to move life force from one person to another. We can take damage to ourselves in order to heal others, or heal ourselves by draining someone else. Unless you're suggesting we try to use our friends as batteries of life force, shunting our wounds onto an enemy is the ideal way to magically heal.
    >>18291380

(2x3 and 3x6 on fresh Barrier)
(Red goes on 2x9 with an Agility test)
    (Option gets no matches)

You need back-up, clearly. Thus, you must back the fuck up. You cycle your barrier, this time trying to impart some more force to it, while you start retreating. Option snaps off a shot, but it fails to track her as she runs up along the wall, over some objects, then back around in front of you. Shit.

You get ready to defend yourself, but like a striking snake, she latches a hand around your throat and picks you up off the ground and slams you into the wall, cracking the concrete. Then it speaks. You call it 'it' because, while Anna's voice can also be heard, the voice it speaks in is the Voice. "The spirit was weak, but the vessel is strong! I have assumed direct control!" Your vision is getting a little dark around the edges as the possessed Syrpent is pressing your own barrier into your throat. Which totally blows.

You lob a psibolt enhanced punch at "her" head, but she catches you at the goddamn wrist and pins your hand against the wall. Shit. She is, however out of hands. You try and press your palm bolt first into her face with your left hand. When she maneuvers out of clawing range, you settle for grabbing her wrist. The handwraps she's wearing boil away instantly, and showers of purple sparks fall to the alley floor as you directly apply the force. You use this opportunity to leverage yourself, pressing your feet against the wall and leaning up, giving you sufficient freedom to at least say something cool. Then you're beaten to the punch. "Stop!" Someone says over an external speaker.

"Hammertime!" You find yourself hanging off the floor of the alley unassisted for a second, then drop back down, as the armored "foot" of a suit of Mk 1 Power armor connects with Red's chest and flings her about six feet back into the side of the dumpster. You're pretty sure you heard some ribs crack.

Johnny leans the armor back with the other leg, allowing Syrpent to make like her name sake and wiggle free, jumping back several yards into the alley. "Hey, get back here!" He shouts, and tries to follow, but the zapped leg just teeters forward and smacks into the spot where it was before. "Aw, fuck. She boiled out all the hydraulics in the leg!" No, we shouldn't. Especially since our psibolt does way more damage than our knife. We have a much bigger dice pool with the psibolt. We've been over this in previous threads. Our psibolt is better than any melee weapon or Cyrean firearm that we've used. Better than the shard rifle, better than the ghostglaive.

Bro, the first thing they teach you in any martial arts class is to dodge and that, while you should always block and parry, you're only supposed to be doing that in case you didn't dodge far enough. Dodging is always more effective than parrying - it's just that parrying often supplements dodging.

    >Dodging is always more effective than parrying - it's just that parrying often supplements dodging
Yes, because dodging is harder. You have to move your whole body instead of just an arm. I was expecting to need to supplement with parrying, hence asking about a weapon, but according to the game mechanics, you never need to supplement with parrying because if we can parry it you can dodge it much easier. That doesn't make sense. Maybe effective was the wrong word but that's what I was saying. We shouldn't be able to just dodge everything with normal human reflexes.

We have better than normal human reflexes. The real issue is that trying to dodge and parry at the same time uses the lower dice pool -1, just like all combined actions. If we were better at parrying, we would be trying to parry instead of dodge. And dodging is definitely easier than parrying. I've taken a fair number of contact martial arts, and you always, ALWAYS try to move out of the way. A block or a parry is a last resort, not a first one.

You step away from the side of the alley, and rap your fist against the outside chassis of The Hammer. "I'll take it from here, chief." You hurl a couple psibolts down the alley. Voice/Red responds with another of her "warp" bolts, which your attacks smack into, which sounds roughly like to unstoppable forces smacking into the same immovable object, which is made of chalkboards. Clearly, the possession aspect is improving Red's performance above and beyond human norms. If it wasn't clear before when she was tossing you around like a doll, it is now. You sigh. You need to see what is up. Option takes a pot shot, but she deflects the bolt with her scythe.

    (2x5, 2x7 and 2x9 on Magesight)

You open your perception on the alley. Surprisingly, its less terrifying than you'd think. You can see the vestiges of the evocations you used earlier, wafting around, along with whatever weird form of space-altering magic Anna has. You can also see the possessed Syrpent. Oddly enough, it looks like how you'd expect, you can see Anna beneath, but with the Voice overlaid her as kind of a mist shape, like it appeared in the dream world. Underneath it, you can see Anna's face. Her eyes are closed, like she's asleep. Given that you're magical, you can accurately process this to mean that she's still in a way asleep, and that the Voice has decided to take a joyride.

Then you hear a small explosion, and blink your Sight away. "Tally ho!" someone shouts. Ashwood lands on is feet in a crouch, katana drawn. There's a silvery box on his chest which smokes faintly. You recognize it as a one-use anti-gravity harness from the W&U catalog. Voicepent takes a sweep at him with the war scythe, but Ashwood blocks, then the two proceed to trade blows back and forth.

Says Ashwood a little strained as the Possessed Anna swings around her weapon with a lot more strength and speed than a normal person. You take some careful steps forward, trying to to draw attention to yourself. Your current plan is to use the scythe as a medium to pull the Voice out, employing your necromancy to counter-act possession, which is totally something you can do, probably.

The plan becomes a little moot as Red opens up Ashwood's guard with a powerful swing, then elbows him in the gut, and casually backhands him, sending him flipping up into the air, smacking into the lid of a dumpster on the opposite side of the alley, which slams down behind him as he falls into it. You're beginning to doubt you'll be able to hold on to the scythe long enough to cast your mojo.

You need to make your move, but given the fact Roxy just parasoled down 30 stories and is now engaging in hand-to-hand with a dangerous metahuman, you're not sure you want to just toss her stuff aside. You decide to compromise, and toss the coat and umbrella behind you at Johnny, saying; "Hold these." The Hammer's arms flail wildly for a second, and manage to catch the coat and parasol.

Roxane is actually holding her own pretty well, by virtue of standing inside of the scythe's reach, thus preventing it from being used as appropriately. While Red under possession is quick enough to dodge most of the blows, Roxane is sufficiently shielded. She's also standing directly between you and Anna's body, so you can't do much to help.

Then Roxane manages to get a blow in, and sweep the scythe away from Red. Score! You rush over to the spot where it landed, reach out to pick it up and... it dissipates into a burst of mist then vanishes, since the Voice is no longer actively keeping it solid. "Well. Shit." You look over your shoulder. You'll probably have to get up close and personal now.

You shift around, needing a change in action. You'll cast your speed boosting evocation, dash over and grab Red while Roxane is distracting her. You breathe deep, and prepare to cast a spell. While you do it, Roxy blocks Voicpent's punch with an arm, and gives her two quick jabs to the chest. Red twitches with each blow, and lets out a pained grunt. You'd guess the stun-knuckles are working. Or Roxy is punching her in the cracked ribs. You remember you wanted to cast an evocation.

(3x3 on Air evocation. If there was another 'round' to this combat, you'd totally get +3d on an Athletics check)

"Ehecatl." You say. Air wraps around your limbs, making you feel much lighter. You brace yourself for a run, ready to take off, and see Roxane give Red a resounding hook to the head, and the latter goes down. You're in motion. Roxy moves up a little, intent on making sure she's down for the count, but you interrupt. "Wait!" You say, the distance about half closed, Roxy shifts over to you for a second. Red gets up into a crouch, and you can see the light in her eyes fading. She grabs Roxane's hand in a crushing grip and says, "This will not be forgotten." Then her eyes roll up in her head, and she falls to the ground. Then the red mist envelops her unconscious form and scoots off down the alley. Roxane is holding her left hand, which appears to be smoking, but otherwise unharmed.

"Are you alright?" You ask. She clutches her hand so you can't really see, but when she looks up at you, she doesn't seem to be in a lot of pain. "I'll be fine. No real damage, done." You nod. "Sorry about the distraction. I was going to try and depossess her." You look at the alley where the mist disappeared. "Though I think that last one might of gotten her guest to leave anyway."

You hear a sound like a sawblade on sheet metal, and look over at the dumpster on your side of the street, and find Ashwood literally slicing his way out of it. He clambers out, a little dirtier, but not much worse for the wear. "Got away, did she?" He asks. You just nod in response. Then you look over at the Hammer, as Roxy picks her coat off one of the forklift prongs, and puts it back on. "Let's see about getting this thing towed out of here. Then I think we need to talk to the police." Ashwood sheathes his sword. "The constabulary should be on their way as we speak. This is downtown, too, shouldn't be long."

Or, you know, use some pruning shears. Using necromancy in that situation is like bringing a hand grenade to a slap fight.

Awesome? Hey, if necromancy is just transfering life energy why does it need to be transfered into skeletons? Could we make golems? GOLEMS POWERED BY PRUNING KUDZU.

And if it can't be used to power golems, can it if we combine it with Evocation?

I think we'd need to combine it with a school of magic other than evocation.

    Maybe conjuration or transmutation.

No, he's asking if it has to be undead specifically. He wonder whether it has to be specific inert matter, like bones, or if we could use a bunch of rocks to achieve the same effect.

If those schools exist. The only schools we don't currently have that we've had confirmation of are Restoration and Divination.

Piles of guns lack life too. I want to animate piles of guns. It's cooler and less morally ambiguous. Why does everyone raise skeletons? That shit is just asking to get you mobbed.

I would rather animate a small, carefully-crafted metal manikin with a large-caliber gun for a head, if we make armed constructs. Ideally, I would rather have the constructs not have any built-in weapons, to keep from scaring people, and just arm them if the situation arises. This is, of course, presuming that we are even capable of making constructs without some serious practice.

In the case of necromancy, yes. Basically dead thing is out of life, you convert some juju back into life, dead thing walks around for a while.

Transmutation is probably the proper school of Golem-making. You could ask Miles, he seems to be pretty good at it, but since he tried to dream-assassinate you, you're probably not inclined to chat with him.

Omega seems to be following Dresden Files magic rules for most things (excluding reality warping outsiders for obvious reasons).

This means that, while you can do some impossible things with magic, those things still have to do business with the laws of reality to function. You can conjure fire out of nothing, but it still acts like real fire.
    >> Omega !Q7t.srvWZ6 03/12/12(Mon)01:56 No.18295408
    >>18295379

Correct. There is actually an extra called "No Physics" which means your Miracles do not act under normal physics. Red has this extra, you do not.
    >> Anonymous 03/12/12(Mon)02:01 No.18295455
    >>18295408
Out of curiosity, is there a way to obtain that extra without fucking around with Outsiders?
    >> Omega !Q7t.srvWZ6 03/12/12(Mon)02:04 No.18295483
    >>18295455

Depends on the nature of the power. All of Dan's powers operate within conventional physical bounds. He'd just need to find something that defied normal physics operating procedures. Like Captain Skinner, who has "No Physics" on her Firearms skill and can curve bullets with her robot arm.

Outsiders, since they originate from universes other than our own, with different rules, tend to automatically have this distinction. They don't play by the same rules as us.

Good to know. Something else I've been wondering, what are the possible options for us to push our six base stats beyond 5? If I understand correctly, that's the normal human limit, yes?
    >> Anonymous 03/12/12(Mon)02:12 No.18295555

We can't push them beyond five. We can just start upgrading one die to a hard die, then a wiggle die. Like our Command? That's one tick away from our own personal maximum. The highest it can get is 4+wd.

I understand that normally we can't do that, but I'm wondering if there are any supernatural/superscience ways to push beyond those limits?
    >> Omega !Q7t.srvWZ6 03/12/12(Mon)02:23 No.18295637
    >>18295525

You would have to gain a new Permission (Basically get a new source for powers) that either gives you Inhuman Stats or a permission called Prime Specimen, which allows to you buy Hyperstats. The hyperstat pool is separate from your regular stats, but you add them together (Along with Skill dice and hyperskill dice) when you roll.

To do this, Dan would need to either have some external source, like tech, or fundamentally alter himself through further genetic modification, or with cybernetics or something.

    >>18295555

Actually, technically Dan can have as many of his native stat or skill dice hd or wd as he likes. Peak Performer doesn't allow you to have more total dice than the human norm, but you can have as many of those "native" dice be any kind of dice. I just gave to the hd because Dan hit his cap, so he needed some manner of improvement to show for being defiant to the end.
