    Here we are again!

    previous threads:

    The rules are simple:
    1) evolve a creature by modifying their picture and giving a plausible reason.
    2) only a single modification/upgrade may be made per 'update'.
    3) you can choose different species to upgrade.
    4) I'll be plopping some events which you can adapt your creatures to, and decide if any updates are invalid.

We take a break from the increasingly complex tribal life, and focus on the evolution of life in the Great Central Desert. Different continent, and set just after the Black Dawn extinction event.

First we have the Burrog, a descendant of the Glund. They burrow through the sand, omnivores they are.

And then we have the Sandoni. Descendants of the hive adoni, they have adapted to a solitary life and sucks plant sap or blood for a living.

Oh yeah, they also have those markings on their front legs to lure herbivores, like this sap over here.

The Usmal. Descendants of land flatworems. Yes, that's right, they're like fish living in the desert. Moving through the sand using their legs. Herbivores.

They have long tongues to rasp plants and drink their sap.

Next we have the fearsome predator Wespar, descendant of Wescks. They tend to fly at breakneck speeds and strike with uncanny percision and speed. Thank god they're solitary loners.

Next up we have the plants.

And lastly, we have the Kaskus, a descendant of Evola. It has hard spiky leaves at the bottom, and grow to great height to absorb enough sun from their skin. They also have gnarly, deep roots to tap into the underground water, and hard enough so they don't get chewed up by Usmals and Burrogs.

    Alright, time to get evolving!

Some of the Usmal diverge into a group that secretes a watery mucus which seeps into the sand and then quickly dries into a hard material. Tall stalks of this stuff can be found where they dig into the sand to make their homes.
They are nocturnal. Basic variety is still around.

The fast Wespar developed a secondary pressurization organ. It is called an Augmenter, this allows the wesper to reach much higher speeds then previously available. The speeds proved too much for the bugs, and anything that wasn't streamlined to their bodies was frequently ripped off during aerobatic manoeuvrings. Current Fast Wespar live off of an extremely high caloric diet, as such they have become omnivorous. Their digestive tracks are not suited to this yet and they have become rather "gassy", their digestive track terminates at their augmenter where waste is rapidly, sometimes explosively flung out behind them.

Their tail spike develops to sensory organ, that they hold against the sand.
This alerts them to the presence of worm burrogs, as their movement causes vibrations trough sand.

They rasp plants with those tounge, they're abrasive.
So how they eat is like rubbing sandpaper on an uncut cucumber, so the sap bleeds out. The sap, and any plant matter caught in their tounge's rough surface, is then eaten/drunk.
It's more plausible this way because the land flatworem's mouths are six vertical slits, and I find it difficult for them to bite into plants that way.

The Fast Wespar's digestive system finally caught up to their energetic needs. A byproduct of this is excessive gas. The gas vented out of their augmenters is now ignited and controlled by chitinous plates attached to specialized muscles. The Fast Wespar are now capable of incredible speed, and thanks to the plates they can even control velocity, pitch, yaw, and roll during an ignition. They have begun preying more frequently on things flying or in the air momentarily.

The sand worms continue to adapt to the desert.
They have developed specialized muscles right underneath their armor plates, which are constantly undergoing micro contractions. This causes the armor plates to vibrate, which in turn causes the around the worm to turn in to more "fluid" like. This helps the worm to move more swiftly trough the sand.
The pressure sensitive organs on their sides have developed to cancel out this self caused vibration from the sensory feed of the worm.

This has curiously caused the worm to become vulnerable to vibrations that are near it's own frequency. They quickly confuse the worm, as their brains try to figure out which vibration is coming from the worm itself, and which is coming from the outside.

Because of this, the worms have started to avoid each other, as they would quickly confuse each other, as the frequencies of their vibrations are so close to each other.

But the worms still need to mate however.
To circumvent the problem of meeting each other, the worms have developed a strange reproductive tactic. The males lay a slowly pulsating "egg" that contains their sperm. These eggs pulsate with a certain frequency, causing vibrations that draw the females near them. When they find these eggs burrowed deep in the sand, they devour them, and thus the sperms within them are absorbed to the female, and she is inseminated.

Eventually, the female lays proper eggs, from which burst out young sand worms.

The flying wespar have undergone significant evolutionary changes. Their lifespan is only 20% of what it was, but due to the need to have breeding partners and proliferate the now MachWespar travel in swarms. dozens of blades now slash and cut, allowing the wespar to bring down larger prey. Internally they have changed as well. Their blood is a potent oxidizer and corrosive agent, as well as being highly flammable. Food is passed directly into a chamber filled with their blood where it is quickly broken down and converted to energy for their hungry bodies. The waste is passed directly to the augmenters to be burned. When a MachWespar nears the end of its natural life it will signal the swarm to begin a hunt for something big to gorge themselves on. The Dieing Wespar will then begin a "Terminal Burn" violently ejecting its own life blood thru the augmenter it reaches speeds too fast to track with the naked eye. Indeed, its victim has no warning as the Hate filled Wespar impacts its body into it at super sonic speeds. The kinetic force itself is significant enough to kill, the remaining blood explodes on impact.

The massive sand worms still roam the sand ocean, but in areas where the ground is more solid, they were unable to effectively move about.
The soil was too hard, and they were too big, and thus, they could not burrow through it.
Some of them adapted to these rockier environments however.

They became smaller, and developed hard bumbs containing metal on their shells, while also becoming able to vibrate in even higher frequencies.

These land worms burrow trough rock, not very fast, but they can do it. In looser soil, such as plains and similar areas, they can be almost as deadly as their sand worm ancestors, who still rule the deserts.

The Cho Sadoni evolves a set of auditory sensors on it's head and with them develops a deeper communication system with members of it's group. Also some of the huge Leaf sadonis and groups of the Cho Sadoni have formed somewhat of a symbiotic relationship with the Cho sadoni keeping a wary eye out for predators and the larger Leaf Sadoni scaring away some of the other herbivores and the smaller predators.

The Sandcoral Usmal were naturally attracted to these oases. Around them, numerous intertwined sand tube rose from the desert sands.

The now almost colonial shooting sandoni groups began to actively move in search of food. They used their acid sprayers to bring down prey, which they then feasted on, or drive away predators. These rowing bands of sandoni hunt effectively in smaller groups, and sometimes, these groups gather together, and form massive armies that migrate from oasis to oasis.

Their eyesight developed further, and thus did their accuracy increase. Their mouth parts changed to suit their now omnivorous diet.

The ravenous Wespar swarms go through the generations with hardly any external changes.

Their females however have adapted a new method for reproduction. In order to lay their eggs they seek out large creatures and crash into their bodies releasing the eggs and a cloud of pheromones that prevents other Wespar from devouring the pray..
A female's speed at that time is lower than the 'terminal velocity' of a dying specimen so even several hits might not be enough to kill a very large creature. Those unlucky enough to survive soon die devoured from the inside bu thousands of hungry Wespar larvae.

The sandworms haven't changed much over the ages. There have been few offshoots, but it seems that the mighty sandworm has reached near perfection for it's ecological niche. The only major change in body structure is the development of fangs in the secondary set of jaws, which were originally their front legs.

The sandworms can grow into immense size, easily weighting many tons. These creatures are very old however. Eventually, the worms will starve to death, as moving around becomes more and more inefficient as they grow in size.
They grow their whole lives, the young ones are extremely active, constantly swimming trough sand, and attacking other creatures.
They gorge themselves on everything they can kill, they feast and grow, storing away massive amounts of fat under their armored skins.
As the grow, and gain size, their activity lowers. They begin to mainly just lay eggs, only occasionally attempting to feed.
The truly massive worms may weight tens of tons. These creatures manly just wait for their death. They may move once in a year to a better location, and then resume their inactivity.
If something edible passes too close to their resting place, their long tongue will burst out and attempt to grab the creature. Actually moving their bodies would usually consume more energy than the potential prey would even grant them.

If that thing tilts down to look or attack it's going to take a ton of energy to get back up as it would be effectively countering it's own burst and gravity.

Its a little more extravagant when it beings a final burn. Most of the time they are subsonic, there are no flames and they get by like a squid does thru the water. Their "jets" just specialized lungs that compress and expell the air out behind them, the augmenter is attached to their lungs and does the same thing but at a much greater level. When combustable material is injected into the airstream (via waste or blood) it tends to ignite due to the extreme pressure and this...GO FAST. Their "jets" have about 130 degrees of swivel to them in any direction, so at low speed, they can hover and are highly maneuverable, they are also much more vulnerable to the other flyers then. It takes a moment to get back up to speed.. By the way, i didnt do the parasitic larvae thing, but i do love it. so thank you mystery poster.
    ---------
p.s. new evolution: sac under chin holds reserve amount of highly processed blood to be sprayed out mouth. Upon contact with air it ignites. Not too much, so not that long of a stream, but when an entire swarm can do it, it sucks for whoever.

    I kinda agree.
It is feasible if they move with the thrusters mostly when they attempt to attack, but otherwise they either stay immobile, or slither on the sand.
They could relocate themselves during nights, and then just wait for suitable prey to come by during the day.

The Sand devil shows an enterprising young burrog who hopped on its back how its extremely flexible body allows it to open its mouth very wide. An interesting thing of note about the biology that the Burrog is experiencing first hand is that its "tongue" is actually part of its digestive track, its intestines to be specific. Its mouth is actually a stomach, food is torn to bits, sits inside the maw and is bathed in acid while the intestinal tongue slurps up the delicious slurry.

just to give an idea of what the Wespar look like when they aren't going full fucking turbo. They are sorta chill. Like dragon flies, if dragon flies lived for about 3 weeks. Fun fact, they emit a shit ton of heat, so at night when they sleep....(yep they are daytime predators) they are very vulnerable to attack from anything that sees/ detects heat.

The Wespar has lost its blade tail, the swarm now relying more heavily on fire breathing to bring down prey, this requires more hovering and low speed maneuverability. A pair of fleshy stubby wings appears on its side, and the tail becomes more of a rudder then a stinger, as well as loosing some of its flexibility. To conserve energy the Wesper slither along the ground for about 80% of their waking day. Elder tribe members are more frequently seen flying about at mach speeds and periodically beginning a final burn.

ok, so the wespar have now adapted a row of spined, streamlined plates along their neck, which they can open and close at will. They open them to expense heat, so other predators with thermal vision or any other naimal that is good at detecting heat can no longer spot them. So to clarrify, the plates can be opened to epense heat to cool them down, as their fire bellies will be making a great amount of heat this evolutional theme was key to their survival. They also act as good defence for the neck, which is the easiest thing to bite on the wespar. The fact there is a spine running down the plates, can harm animals when biting them and maybe even deflect spines, as it is a lot harder to penetrate a sloped surface.

to avoid the tail from burning from the immense heat expended from their glorious flight packs, a bony, heat reflecting plate has developed over their tail. In tandem, it has also developed a pair of short, muscular arms with three digit claws (one acting as an opposable thumb). This helps it greatly for mobility and climbing in heavy, dense, wooded areas and also for cutting its prey open to reach the places that are most nutritious. In addition, i do not know whether it has been explained, but their fuel for their flight packs is wasted products (such as urea) and also fat, in the most dire situations.

The desert stalkers grow in size. They move during the night, slowly walking over the sand.
Their proboscis has developed into a sharp multi-jointed needle like appendage, that they use to pierce the bodies of their prey. They have also developed long feelers that they use to detect potential prey.

They hunt by stalking their prey during the day, and when the night comes they move over it, and kill it by piercing it's vital organs, such as spine or brains with it's proboscis.

Their walking style produces minimal vibrations, thus the ever present sandworms rarely attack them.

Kaskus plants in large oaisi have remained partially immersed in water and have developed central water storage. Their externally exposed elements have developed a strong fiberous external skin. Below the earth the plants have been extending their reach into the soil, utilizing small root tendrils to crack the ground, exploring deep for resources. Once a resourse is detected the tendrils surround the resource and engorge. The distended tendrils act as a super-highway bringing the resource quickly to the main body of the plant for utilization. The Kaskus has shifted their fruit bearing roots closer to the surface, to discourage herbavores from digging the entire plant up.
