29 KB ARMORED CORE QUEST: THE MAKING OF PART THE FOURTH. AC-Guy 05/01/12(Tue)00:22 No.18929465
Hey guys. This thread will be like the others: One parts the quest discussion, three parts the crunch.

Since it's still early in the development, I thought I'd take the chance to ask /tg/'s opinion on certain things.

Like sub systems: How does /tg/ feel about the ability to craft custom parts/items? Should that be something I try to work into core, or leave it for a splat or something? On the one hand, I hate the idea of putting a bunch of splats out there. On the other, Nothing like base construction rules, rules for building arms forts, etc. is needed for a player to play. Maybe it'd work better in the GM's Guide or something?
    >> !UdzMmUq0Oc 05/01/12(Tue)00:29 No.18929569
I'd say a secondary book for the stuff. GM's Guide would probably cover it, yeah.

Did you get the link for the pastebin of the opener from the previous thread?

Can't say I'm surprised, the thread was pretty busy when I posted it last night.

    http://pastebin.com/Uz0QxnxP

I fixed "Elise" to "Elsie" despite very nearly forgetting to, and couldn't stop myself from capitalizing the skill ranks titles. There are dashed section breaks for subject shifts, and that's about it.
    >> AC-Guy 05/01/12(Tue)00:51 No.18929798
I'll take a second to explain this further: I would put all the core rules into one book. Everything you need to play the game would be in that one book.

But then there would be another book with rules and idea for making custom weapons, vehicles, Arms Forts, etc.

If I put that into the core rules, it would be the slightly striped down version, but it would be there. If I said 'fuck it' and made it a splat book, I would put the sort of custom awesome shit to make it WORTH spending the extra 20 bucks or so for the other rule book. In addition to that, I would add a lot of shit in like 'examples' and such.

Basically, it would be a book of resources. It would be like Shadowrun: rules you NEED are all right there in the main book, but then the splats would take one aspect of the game, and dedicate the entire book to fleshing it out, adding options, and making it better.

    Seems reasonable to me.

One Idea as to make spears useful is that they give you a bonus against charging enemies. I don't know enough about AC to know if boosting works that way though.

Spears should be EN weapons, like laser swords. They are harder to wield but have more range, more damage when applied properly.

A few other possibilities for them. Swords/knives are pretty limited to what ranges they occupy, I doubt we're going to see any ACs half-swording.

Spears changing the range would be easy, you can get really long thrusts where only one hand is on the end, medium range maneuvers with the hands around the middle bit and shorter stuff would be a bit awkward but still doable. Also every part of it is a weapon, you can still bash things in with bits that aren't the point.

A range advantage in melee could give you a higher chance of getting the first hit in and you could brace yourself for a charge much more effectively than a sword could.

Given the two handed grip and it's straight profile the damage from charges or falling on someone with the spear pointed towards them would hit with serious force.

If you stick wings on the spear end you could also use it to prevent an enemy from running through your spear though that might seriously stress the materials, not sure if it'd work.

They are also much more throwable than swords, though if you're in a situation where you're throwing it life isn't good.

Also ours needs a tassel at the spear end, they look cool and do serve some tactical purpose by making the it harder to see the haft behind the tip.
    >> AC-Guy 05/01/12(Tue)02:02 No.18930544
    >>18930507

There is a major problem with this line of thought:

You are not flying a Gundam.

Your hands can't even clap if you wanted to, half the mobility is in the torso shifting and using the Core's weight, not articulated limbs. Because the more moving bits you have, the easier it is to break the fucking thing. If you're going to be having your shit slapped around constantly you need it to be durable.

This man has a good point.
Polearms are a total weapon. A true master spearman uses ALL of the weapon, blade, haft, and butt. Dirty tricks like sweeping an opponents legs out from under them with the butt end (or with the business end if it has wings, a hook, or anything else you could grab their ankle with) are par for the course. So in theory they could just sacrifice raw killing power for versatility. They may still not be as objectively "good" by game rules, but they'd probably be feasible enough to exist in setting (although they could be rather rare) and to make them worth using from both RP (character likes the flexibility, also polearms are usually used in fiction as the weapon of the intellectual, although this isn't really accurate to reality) and meta (options, options everywhere, and is cool) perspectives.

I dunno about bucket 'o javelins/whatevers when we have perfectly good missiles.

Really the whole melee thing in general should be kinda iffy from a herp derp realism standpoint though so it's cool I guess.
    >> Asukafag 05/01/12(Tue)02:16 No.18930665
    >>18930578
Admittedly, achieving that level of mastery would really rely that your entire build focus around the spear and using it, so you'd gain a versatile weapon at the cost of personal versatility.
Okay yeah, thinking about that factor, spears really AREN'T all that viable for Armored Core style mecha.
    Ah well.
    >> ClericMan 05/01/12(Tue)02:22 No.18930712
    >>18930657
I also suggested that they have a heat rod type effect though, so you skewer someone they explode you move on, you never really get within melee range, and frankly have you played an armored core game? if you speck for speed missiles couldn't touch you, just speed past or dodge last second, i mean sure they have power but fuck if you could hit more than half the time.
    >> Throne 05/01/12(Tue)02:22 No.18930720
Ok, how about a pneumatic lance? A trigger on the end of the shaft triggers the pointy bit at the tip. Sort of a pressure triggered switch blade.

Or just have it be a heat rod lance. More range than vanilla HR; lighter, narrower rods (spikes?).
    >> Anonymous 05/01/12(Tue)02:24 No.18930732
    >>18930544
Hmm, given that they'd probably work best with fast chargers whose goal is to impale the other AC, preferably before they shoot you and to beat out the swords a bit in range so you hurt them before they hurt you. For something like this wings would be useful if the materials can take it. It means they're stuck on a pole if the hit doesn't take them out, if you continue to charge they can't go left or right without making the hole larger, pushing forward would not get them off it and if they head backwards you keep them on it by heading forward. I could see a Spear and Shotgun build being interesting though extremely specialized.

It might not be the most viable but I could see it working in some situations.

Also you have more room in the haft for stuff, extra heat rod charges if you go that route, maybe a pneumo-shock thingy that goes off after you stab them to blow them off of it. Discardable explosive tips that you leave inside whoever you stab and then go boom, though that might be expensive as hell.
    >> Asukafag 05/01/12(Tue)05:55 No.18932271
Okay, so it turns out that lances rape in a charge.
That probably needs toned down a bit, but it proves they're not completely useless, just highly specialized.
    >> AC-Guy 05/01/12(Tue)06:00 No.18932298
    >>18932271

Thing is, if it gets toned down much more, they're going to be useless.

Yeah the charge is a bit MUCH, but it was rolled absurdly well for, twice in a row..

You also have to consider that the charge is ALL THEY HAVE. Other weapons get some cool bonus shit to play with.

I'm thinking the lance that was in the thread today is going to be the lance equivalent to the Moonlight or the Karasawa and just keep it as is, and bring a toned down version in for you guys to play with.

Maybe add a chance that they can break from a charge?
if you get a bad hit or some such, to stop you from charging over and over and over until there's nothing left to charge.
    >> Asukafag 05/01/12(Tue)06:07 No.18932342
    >>18932322
And maybe make them more likely to break against opponents with heavy armor.
So for example, charging Aris BOOMFORTHEBOOMGOD rig would be more likely to break your lance than charging an assassin build.
    >> Anonymous 05/01/12(Tue)07:50 No.18932810
Why not make them explosive tipped? With a normal melee weapon you're just injuring the part you hit. Charge with a Lance and leave behind a present so that you get the initial damage and a large after effect

    >>18932835
Not necessarily; you probably can't put too much explosives into the hit, but it really turns up the threat factor of any single hit. You'd still have to penetrate pretty much straight on, so it's riskier but with greater reward. Just thinking of a way to make them worthwhile
    >> Anonymous 05/01/12(Tue)13:12 No.18935395
I was wondering, AC-Guy, why you decided to have the damage ratings as d8-2, for example instead of just 2d8. Is it so the potential d8/2 fits the system better?
    >> AC-Guy 05/01/12(Tue)16:13 No.18937172
    >>18935395

    Actually, There's a pretty simple reason for that: the DR isn't 2d8, it's d8-2.

That's more of an answer than it sounds like. The DR is still d8, the '-2' is a modifier. Effectively what it's doing is halving the threshold, so instead of getting a bonus damage die with 10 under, you're getting it at five (And so on). Theoretically, having a weapon feat that doubled damage would affect the DR directly, instead of the modifier. So say, with certain feats/traits a weapon with a DR of d8, could be a 2d8 or a d12 or whatever.

So while it doesn't LOOK like there's any difference between a d12-4, 2d12-2 and a 3d12-1.5, there actually is a mathematical difference if you sit down and run numbers.

It's actually simpler than it looks, I'm just avoided going into the details because it both looks confusing at first glance, and because I haven't actually made the rules for that bit yet.
    >> !UdzMmUq0Oc 05/01/12(Tue)16:15 No.18937188
I gotta be honest, I keep reading the "-X" as a minus, rather than a rating mod. I know you're using it a mod, but the hyphen keeps reading as a minus symbol.
    >> AC-Guy 05/01/12(Tue)16:18 No.18937216
    >>18937188

I can see why that would be an issue, but it actually scans better as d8-2 than d8x2, d8:2 or d8*2. Plus those can also fuck with reading to to double meanings, or in the case of the ':' being overlooked entirely, and having somebody request a d82.

I'm certainly not saying don't use the -, just, yeah. How about a bullet, for DR8•2? It's at least as noticeable as the - and doesn't have potential for being a minus.

Suppose I have a suggestion. The simplest of melee weapons, blunt objects! Heavier than other melee weapons, but damn can they smack around cores if they aren't careful. Can come in several flavors such as normal, spiked, electrified, anything else that may be thought up of, so on and so forth.

Can range from hammers, to simple clubs, to maces, to morning stars, etc. I'd imagine that the more expensive and dangerous ones would be the electrified ones, as in ones that have a built up charge that is released when it smashes into another core. Dangerous in that it can release its charge in anything metal however, so watch where you swing it. More typical ones would just be normal. Thick enough that it probably won't need a force sheath, heavy enough that you probably won't see a light mech prance around with one, and very effective in really just wrecking anything inside of whatever you're hitting.

Only thing is, I don't see this as an energy weapon. Closest you could get would be the electrified ones, which are dangerous to tote around if you don't know what you're doing.

Rail Weapons? Weapons that use magnetic forces to propel ammunition?

Depleted Uranium Rounds? Sure to fuck something up, although probably illegal in the arena.

Weapons capable of being mounted into things other than arms and shoulders? Like as in Battletech, with a missile pod being worked into the body, or weapons built into certain parts. Could just have a generalized slot in the body/leg/arm/head part that can house specific weapons, most likely only secondary unless heavy, missile specific slots and so forth.

I don't know, he has kind of a point. At the very least, the typical story presentation for an Armored Core game completely eschews the use of human figures and faces - sure, you could argue they're just being lazy, but looking at other From games in the same vein (Metal Wolf Chaos, Another Century's Episode) and especially the story advancements of Last Raven, 4, and For Answer, all of which had identifiable characters (relatively speaking), it's clearly a deliberate decision.

Mind you, the official Armored Core manga, Tower City Blade, has plenty of human-focused elements, as does the cancelled OVA and that light novel which formed the basis of some of the PSP remake exclusive parts. Still, this isn't the kind of story From would tell, and to be honest I'm starting to feel like the action and plot is getting a bit too infrequent compared to our character moments.

I mean, I *like* our characters, I like having a team and people we can rely on, but sometimes it gets to be too much, you know? Hopefully AC-Guy's promised plot revelations will change things up a bit and bring back the darkness and intensity of the early moments of the quest.
    >> AC-Guy 05/04/12(Fri)05:26 No.18972645
    >>18972584

I prefer a different method of storytelling. Honestly, I'm a bit surprised how much the character aspects have taken center stage.

There are several good reasons to let you get to know the characters: Firstly something that always bugged me about AC is that in more than a few games they don't really bother to explain some shit. Like why we should hate that guy, or why Josh just attacked our Colony in a huge-ass super core. Secondly, remember those two friends of Liz's that died before they got any face time? People cared more about losing that fucking spear. Contrast this to how people would react if, say, Dave got gibbed. It's the Joss Wedon school of character development: Let them like the character before you give them the pointless horrible death.
    >> AC-Guy 05/04/12(Fri)05:26 No.18972648
    >>18972645
    >>18972584

I fully intend to put more action in, but some stuff is easier/better outside the core. As much as I rag on it for the stupid shit that's been going on lately, I really like how Gundam goes and shows the characters and their relation to giant robots in the warzone. It's not just constant mech battles, it's also people fighting on foot, sometimes in the shadow of these monsters, and political drama and the cut to the little girl crying because Daddy isn't going to be coming home.

That said, this Quest is basically structured in the form of a classic play (In terms of action and such, since you guys have a lot of freedom over how the story goes) in that there's three acts: Act 1 sets the scene, builds the world, introduces the characters, and the main conflict for the piece comes up towards the end. Act 2 is the conflict, and how people react to it. It's the real MEAT of it, and generally comprises between half and two thirds of the story. Then Act 3 Climaxes, resolves the conflict, and returns the place to an equilibrium.

You guys are most of the way through act one. When it hits act two I'm going to probably do something new in every thread, even if it's going to probably be spaced out a bit more that every day.

    >Also, you should totally post whatever insane theories you've come up with in the crunch thread.

The creepy voices are either some form of Editors or other employees of the G-Man who are working to make sure that the events in the quest do not unfold in such a way to allow Strayed to become the SS-Ranked Alpha-Omega BBEG he becomes at the end of the Old King route in Armored Core 4A. That being the one where he kills all the Arms Forts, all the people in the Cradles, and then everyone else, after taking down 5 top ranked NEXT pilots at once, practically by himself. The catch is, Strayed has to be active during these events, so they cannot kill, or detain and mimic him, and thus must let him roam freely. The forces at work against him are agents of a Rogue Editor taken by The Grim, who are looking to make the world be consumed by rampant Kojima contamination and Corporate rule. Their[The Grims] current midterm goal is the destruction of "Free" colonies like Hope, and kicking off the National Dismantlement War.

I S Ranked that last mission in 4A, by the way. Assault Armor Jousting is fun AND effective, more so with stable perma-Overboost.

This could be a looting world that is having a "Change in management" so to speak, that needs to be kept something other than a radioactive ball of dust and metal corpses, canon radioactive ball of dust and metal corpses or not, since there are other possible routes. And the "voices" are pretty damn Meta so far, so even if you shout and scream denials, I can't help but still think they are Meta in some way.

Continued, MC is working to keep the survivors of Hope alive, and thus keep the hope of freedom from Corporate Rule alive in people across the country, nay, the world. He is doing this fairly well, so far. FeMC, on the other hand, is stuck in a mire of politics that will very easily lead to an international incident. Canada or whoever already poked at taking over Alaska, and now FeMC has taken valuable defense assets away from Alaska and into Canada to hunt down the international conspirators. This incident can easily destroy what little peace there is between nations, and usher in the National Dismantlement war. The Editors, or otherwise Meta employees of the G-Man, are displeased that she took this route due to the sheer volatility of her new political situation. Discretion is highly advised for her, as I doubt Hope II, as it is, could survive the National Dismantlement War any longer than a snowball would stay unmelted in Hell.

Having seen some translated scripts of Project Phantasma and a few English opening cutscenes from the Japanese versions, I can tell you that most AC localizations don't actually remove shit for that kind of reason. PP's script was basically identical.

The usual problem is when plot elements are added or changed, which really only happened with Agetec to my memory. The first one was the 'Nine-Ball' boss from Armored Core Nexus, which was really just a Pulverizer as would be seen in Last Raven.

The second, and MUCH worse change, was in the opening narration for Silent Line. In the Japanese version, it is explicitly stated that the corporations have already discovered Another Layered, whereas in the new opening Another Layered isn't mentioned at all and you only find out about it fairly late into the game.

...thing IS, that opening cutscene was ALREADY IN ENGLISH. Proper, grammatical English. So Agetec actually SPENT MORE MONEY to fuck up the plot of the game.

This isn't well-known, I only know it because I was experimenting with a Japanese ISO of Silent Line Portable. I assume the fandom doesn't know, doesn't have anyone who speaks Japanese to check, and/or doesn't give a shit. They seem to be getting more organized, though, given some new info on the AC Wikia and some art assets too.

One thing that I always though of was why you never see much in the way of EMP devices used. I mean if you could fry at least some of the systems in a mech that would give you a good advantage, like in AC5 jammers, but something that would either stick, or permanently damage them.

I don't know about Canon 'Core, but in my thing they're heavily shielded from radiation and such as a side effect of keeping a small nuclear reactor running and stable.

So because of that they've become mostly immune to an EMP. Running enough raw voltage into a core will still fuck it up pretty good though, like that lightning shotgun that guy who tried to take out Mooch had.

I've been going on the assumption that this world is based somewhat on the pre-AC4 world. Not an actual prequel, what with Hustler One being around and Joshua O'Brien being active and famous, but definitely taking most of its inspiration from there.

I'm saying this mostly because the world is 'our' world and recognizably so - which is only the case in AC4 and For Answer - and the corps are all AC4-based. Plus the 'colony' bit. Obviously some of the tech's incompatible, and the events are different, but you can see where I'm going with this, right?

See, this is what I was talking about when I said I disliked bumping without actual content, but nooo, you had to convince me it was okay. Many of those contentless are my own!
But more seriously, since that isn't really important. By all means, give us something more to work with.

And amazingly, I seem to have found some questions. So, on a scale from 1 to Gundam, how bullshit are Kojima particles considered, if you're using them in the world?

Got another one, but I'm gonna save it so I feel better when I next bump the thread.
    >> !UdzMmUq0Oc 05/07/12(Mon)17:23 No.19014877
Well, as I'm still the only one here, this feels kinda dumb, but whatever.

The other question was inspired by something an anon asked about railguns and was never answered, but I'm now curious about:
Do the solid slug weapons, such as the assault rifles and Deagles, use a solid propellant, or do they use an EM rail/coil system? Or some other third thing, whatever that might be?
    >> AC-Guy 05/07/12(Mon)18:34 No.19015853
    >>19012474

Firstly, 'from 1 to Gundam' is the best 'robo-bullshit' scale ever, and I'm stealing it.

Secondly, I'm going to be using something OTHER than Kojima particles for two reasons: Because they clock a solid 8 on the scale, and because if the thing I use too closely resembles Kojima particles in the system it's going to get me sued. I don't want to create two VERY SIMILAR things that are fundamentally different, only to never use one of them again.

That said, the Kojima equivalent in the system is going to be less insane in terms of versatility, but also won't end the fucking planet by merely existing. Yeah, yeah, grim-derp magic particles, but I want to leave the setting open-ish for future expansions.

And to be fair, back when I said 'it be cool to bump the thread' I was actively preparing content dumps for you guys. If this again becomes the case I'll let you know.

    >>19014877

The projectile guns you currently have are regular guns, just really big.

There ARE rail-guns, kinda. Thing is, the setting in the rule books and shit is going to be set 5 years or so AFTER the events of this quest, so IT will have all of this. The prequel set-up allows me to ease into the new mechanics and shit.

Anyway, core-mounted rail guns have a propellent system to kick-start them, and then use an electric rail to accelerate them further. They just aren't big enough for a 'proper' rail system. They're going to be a bigger, heavier gun with some EN draw, for more damage.

There are a few corporate projects going to try and exploit resources and improve lives, but they aren't really going to relevant for a while in game.

Going by Region, we have Asia, India, The Middle East, North America, South America, Europe, and Australia. Everywhere else isn't really important enough to catch global attention at the time frame you're currently sitting in.

There's also the major factions: The Corps, the Raven's Nest, and Independent groups. National governments and armed forces would be under the regional stuff.

It's decent, but it's also not really like any of the other games before it.

You know how Old AC you had to think about things like cover because you couldn't always dodge bullets? And then AC4 you got really fast cores? Imagine smaller faster cores, in an environment that allows for constant movement, AND lots of cover, thanks to smaller cores.

The thing that makes this possible is the complete redesign of how radar works: Which is a lot more vague, and requires you to deploy beacons.

Personally, I love the hell out of it, especially since from actually made it GOOD for multi-player, and you can even play the entire game in Co-op mode. But I can also see how other 'long time fans' could dislike it.

Oh yeah. It's got about as many options as prior games. And just doing all the story/order missions will keep you busy for about as long as 4 probably did.

One thing though, is that since they made the multiplayer SO GOOD, the entire game has a multiplayer focus. Technically you have to join/form a team for multiplayer to even TOUCH the rest of the game.

This leads to certain design decisions like having your team rank (Which you level up by doing missions and PVP) be what lets you unlock new parts for purchase.

I think one of the other guys set up a group for the PS3 version with an open invite to whoever if you want to join that. Just tell them I sent you.

Mexico had financial problems during the run up to the world getting fucked, and consolidated then nationalized the various technological groups and manufacturing companies.

When the disaster hit, Mexico's greatest minds, shortly after getting the shaft, had access to half the nations financial resources and most of the weapons production facilities.

The Coup was swift and brutal. Currently the Economy is about 80% the corp, and about 10% the government, which primarily exists to add an air of legitimacy to the whole affair.

    >>19018593

    >Crest

Crest is interestingly in the field of conventional forces, with a focus high tech prototype weaponry that won't exist for several more years.

They got into the mega-corp field just in time to miss everyone getting on the Core bandwagon. Seeing that a lot of companies were shifting their focus, the decided to start filling in the gaps left by the march of technology while devoting a chunk of their resources to getting ahead of the curve on the next wave.

They don't have much in the way of cores, but if you have a engine that burns fuel instead of running a small reactor or any type of conventional firearm (Up to and including tanks) there's a decent chance they helped to build it.

Vegas is sort of Corporate Neutral Ground, due to the amount of money flowing through, and the sort of bullshit that's going down there 24/7. Pretty much everyone on the list other than the Technocrat has a stake there, and nobody lets their share get too big lest it's seen as a sign of aggression.

Oregon is sort of the Core equivalent to Silicon Valley. As far as politics go it's like a more civil Vegas, but Rayleonard and G.A. have noticeably larger stakes than everyone else, at least half again as big as the next guy down the ladder.

On the list of Mega-Corps, only three semi qualify as 'Non-AC'.

Rio Macro does computers and works on the cutting edge of A.I. research and computer manufacturing. They also produce some of the better A.I. mech cores, and FCS computers.

Crest is sort of working AROUND ACs, but are also trying to develop anti-AC tech and trying to get ahead of the curve on the next generation of AC parts.

The Technocrat don't SELL anything physical, they're the second largest mercenary network outside the Raven's Nest, and they pretty much OWN Russia. Pretty much everything there not dedicated to making better cores for the Technocrat and them ALONE is all things related to networking for more Merc work, or based around the needs of the locals: food production, cloths, etc. They're trying to make their nation totally self sufficient as a way of both giving the finger to the Corps and to prove a point.

Also, based on AC-Guy's comments that the corps, broadly, aren't particularly different from their game incarnations. So, pulling from http://armoredcore.wikia.com/wiki/Rayleonard Rayleonard does energy stuff, primarily. Theoretically they are/will be the group to come up with the Kojima Particle analog.

Rayleonard was formed shortly after the world properly went to hell. Branson got the hell out of England with as many people as he could possibly save as the storms started up. He ended up in Canada, which had less horrible things happening to them, and plenty of room to put up some refuges from a country they used to worship.

When he got there, he started to see the destruction not just of society, but of the infrastructure that would be desperately needed to rebuild when/if the world started tearing itself apart. He started to direct his efforts into creating a company dedicated to that when word reached him that Donald Trump, who had moved a solid chunk of his holding to Toronto from New York after some sweeping changes in American Tax Law he disagreed with, was plotting something similar.

Trump had more capital to work with, but Branson had lots of fairly solid research data, and the two of them consolidated their assets formed Rayleonard about 4 years ago game time.

Trump was the one who suggested branching out into weapons tech, and Branson helped to exploit the new Core technology. They agreed that if they made good products, they could try and steer the development of the tech to something other than the possible WMDs that the world can't handle right now.

It was mentioned briefly in the first thread: The original cores were invented about Eight years ago, and about 4 years later the first weaponized ones happened.

The original plan was to try and make an A.I. that could recognize brain patterns and respond to them, as a sort of system for prosthetic limbs. While they worked well, people realized that people hooked to more impressive ones could accomplish more. Then they had walker/loaders like the ones seen in the Alien movies followed by things like a couple of people plugged into a grid running the train systems. When it was realized that people responded better to ones that were vaguely human shaped, scientists started to push and see what else could be accomplished with that knowledge. The original 'weaponized' core was a very detailed/mobile unit designed to mimic a human as closely as possible. When some bandit guy tried to attack to steal it, they picked up a car and used it as a club to fight them off.

That was when they discovered the downsides of a high synch score (the test pilot lost the ability to walk due to neurological problems), the advantages to such a machine in a military context, and the fact that they needed to be built slightly less articulated otherwise making them durable enough to be practical would mean making them at least 60 feet tall. Which would make them a huge fucking target on the battlefield.

And every single one of them would be brutally raped by a small fast guy with a Karasawa.

Like Dervish for instance. Hell, they wouldn't even have to be on his skill level, just be less of a target with a big gun. Or someone like Ari with an Over-Weapon like that could insta gib them well outside the range of any targeting computer, because they'll be the size of the fucking buildings she uses for cover.

    >>19030856

Basically, building The Gundam is possible: but in a world where magic particles that fuck targeting computers and shitty tanks don't exist, they're so unbelievably useless that nobody WANTS to build them.

If you're going to go the route of building a giant-ass war machine, you wouldn't make it human shaped with human weaknesses. You'd make something the size of a small city and covered in guns. But that's HILARIOUSLY impractical for 99% of situations, considering how many Cores and traditional weapons you could build for/with the same price/resources.

Hello AC guy I read through the archives of your quest, and let me say it is very good and you should keep doing what you are doing!. With that said I have a couple of suggestions when it comes to running the thread.

1). The first thing is fate points, they are an awesome mechanic but its kind of a clusterfuck figuring out how many we have/when they refresh. I would suggest stating at the start of the thread, how many fate points we have and how long they refresh. It could be arbitrary such as "after two more threads" or it could be plot specific "after this encounter". This will help us, the players, plan and organize our usage of these points.

2). One thing I have noticed was that we can split the quest up into two parts the "conversation phase" and the "action phase". The thing most of /tg feels that they should be able to make more then one conversation. It is sometimes unclear how many options we have before the next wave of plot hits us. One such example is in your 29'th thread we were allowed to talk to damn near everyone before we were given the option to relax with Elsie. Now most of the time we are only allowed to talk to one person, before all the options are closed off and we can't talk to anyone else. I suggest saying at the bottom of each post, how many of the options we can take before the next wave of plot hits.

Thank you very much for the awesome quest and keep up the great work!

1: I generally give people a count when they ask for it, or when it become relevant. I refresh when they have down-time or some sort of event happens to give them a new one. I don't go out of my way to bring it up, because people tend to get unnecessarily paranoid when you talk rules or roll dice for no reason.

2: I have events on a timer, and since this quest is run from a first-person limited viewpoint and none of the characters are omniscient, I can't exactly tell you that in three dialogue options the cops are going to kick in the door. I mean, if you are working with a time-limit I can tell you, but some things you aren't going to see coming in character. So I don't tell you about them.

Currently the big news in South America is Rio. Almost half the city was lost during the global shitstorms (I really need to come up with a name for that), but surprisingly was rebuilt rather quickly. Groups within Rio basically told the Brazilian government to go fuck themselves when they demanded glorious Brasilla be rebuilt FIRST. Even though the city was useless and really only had the government, their support, and nothing else since it was built based on anti-logic.

So the government sent the troops in to.... nobody really Rio? Occupy the city? They never really bothered to explain to anybody why the tanks were coming, and when people saw the tanks coming, everybody called in every favor owed and declared war on the Brazilian government. Due to the Army not really liking their orders, the massive amounts of support Rio's private citizenry got, and the various mercenaries and private security groups getting involved, the army basically doubled in size, went back north and leveled the Capital.

Shortly after this, Rio Macro was founded by several wealthy citizens to try and help financially support the country with more jobs and global income.

Currently Rio Macro is helping fund and support the creation of a new government/constitution, and is generally informally ruling the country in the meantime.

    >> AC-Guy 05/09/12(Wed)19:18 No.19044833
    >>19044701

FHI is Fuji Heavy Industries, their main thing is transportation technology. While a lot of people jumped on Cores as their big thing, FHI realized that nobody thought of the logistics side of things and began developing things like the mobile bases the Alex's Team has. Later other corporations got in on it and started making them 'bigger and better' (like the one being used by Liz's team) to the point where some of the biggest ones are amphibious battle-ships that straddle the line between an arms fort and a heavy transport with guns.

With their foot in the door there they started focusing mostly on things like more efficient booster systems. Some of their best 'low draw' parts are good enough that when paired with a high-end Rayleonard reactor and some coolers out of Rio Macro, they can stay airborne damn near all day.

(In case you're wondering about early corporate history, FHI is a real company in today's world based out of Japan. You can find out more by googleing the name, or going to Wikipedia, since this world is ours up until X years ago in game)

I'll do a quick over-view of the others in a minute.

    >Algebra

Pretty much controls the southern part of Asia (mostly India/Pakistan).

Their big thing is high mobility core designs, and close range combat. they aren't big on durability, but they've got speed enough that it doesn't matter most of the time.

Most of Dervish's Core is made from Algebra derived parts. Apparently he had to have them custom made, since he would routinely get the stock parts to go so far past their engineering tolerances that the machine started trying to tear itself apart.

Apparently they've taken this fact as something of a challenge, and are currently testing to see how far performance parts can be pushed. Currently they haven't got much to show for their research (OOC? Wait until the NEXTs happen. Both versions of White Glint had Algebra parts, and for a GOOD REASON.)

    >Aldra

Pretty much the guys who designed the original core synch protocols.

They don't sell a whole lot of their work directly, but they have so much cutting edge A.I. and Core Synch tech that pretty much everyone works with them to further their research in the field. It's a note of how well known/respected/good they are that they've reached mega-corp status entirely on research grants, donations from the scientific community, and contracts from other mega-corps.
    >> AC-Guy 05/09/12(Wed)19:40 No.19045130
    >Aka Vit

They're the second biggest/most respected corporation in terms of energy behind Rayleonard. While Rayleonard seems to mass produce technology for everyone, Aka Vit's main draw is the fact that their tech is simply a step ahead of everyone else. By the time people have finished reverse engineering their cool new thing they built, they already invented two more down the line and sold the rights to manufacturing to Rayleonard.

They work so closely with the Canadian corp that sometimes they're jokingly referred to as their European branch. They're arguably the smallest of the Mega-Corps, but their presence and brands are strong enough that nobody even thinks twice about their position in the world.

About the same time they come out, there's going to be New Type cores running around with energy shields and stuff. These are actually closer to the traditional 'NEXT' than my version of NEXTs. The NEXTs of this quest are going to be trading power or some sort of cool ability for versatility. So like a NEXT might only be as good as a normal core.... but it can also turn into a jet-plane Robotech style and suddenly quadruple it's movement speed. Or get a Primal Armor so thick you have to drop a building on it to make it crash. Or the ability to turn invisible.

So depending on your point of view, they're either going to be gimmicky or absolutely fucking bat-shit.

    >How far out are they?

Currently they're sailing in between [spoilers] and [not even going to hint at it].

Well there's Duke who runs the place. Ravens get to decide for themselves how much they want known about them, but the numbers of ranking pilots is out in the open.

Speaking of which, does anybody happen to know what thread I did the rank breakdown in? Apparently I lost the piece of paper I had all this shit written down on.

Why am I now picturing Liz with a psychotically OP NEXT built around charging so fast that reacting in time is basically impossible? And why is my mental image of it red?
    >> AC-Guy 05/09/12(Wed)22:27 No.19047279
    >>19046762

The problem with that is there's a point where the core is simply too fast to control.

Take Dervish for instance, he's EXTREMELY good at what he does. He is arguably the only person you've met thus far who might be able to take Nine-Ball in a straight fight. He's easily in the top ten pilots in Vegas.

Josh has commented that Dervish's core is 'stupid fast' to the point of 'completely absurd' and Dervish himself has to be pushing 90 to control it properly. When you fought him in the Arena he had limiters on because at the 70 mark he was cruising at, he would have been ricocheting off the fucking buildings trying to control it at full power.

He wants to see if he can build it FASTER. He can and has hit the 100% synch mark, so he could, in fact, fly something faster. And when/if he builds a NEXT with that in mind, he might be the only one who would be willing to TRY and fly something like that, as opposed to running away screaming, arms flailing comically behind them.

A core like what you're talking about would go at LEAST double the speed of said hypothetical next. It would self destruct if it hit a pigeon at that speed, and Liz you be in serious danger of having her brain pushed out the back of her head by the G-forces.

Religious types might call it the Rapture or something like that. Or the Day of Judgement.

Most people might just call it the Event, or try to avoid specifically giving it a name and only talk about it in vague non-descriptive terms.

    The Day of Reckoning, Armageddon.

Well yeah, there's going to be shit like that.

I need an 'official' name, the one that would go in the history books.

I mean, at the point in the timeline nobody knows what to think about the events, but it's not like modern people refer to WW2 as 'the time everyone started shooting everyone else and then we blew up Japan'.

That's what I was referencing. Though technically it was TSR at the time, but what ever. Whimiscal as it is, it's still more serious than the other three I was pointing at in the post.

What events occured, aside from the storms in the UK, and the San Andreas dropping SoCal(?) into the Pacific?

Anyway, there's all kinds of shit going on: Like the North American plate getting split in two, introducing Earthquakes to the Midwest. I mean, ask a region specific question and I'll do my best to give you the rundown.

Don't expect me to answer immediately though, since I'll be running the quest for the next few hours.

I know we have metal on our ribs currently which would have some nasty drawbacks if it was permanent and I'm wondering what else is available. I'm not sure anyone on Alex's team (don't know about Liz's) would mess around with stuff like that, but our enemies might and I'd like to be prepared for whatever we might run into.
