'So... not vampires.'
'You're sitting in the sun. And so am I.'
'They really don't like the sun?'
'It's an established belief, so, yes.' Lena lies back on the bench, stretching herself out. She's the slender sort, long and slim - you can see her ribs through her t-shirt. 'See. People have beliefs, and they have thoughts. And while there are certain things can't really be contravened - that's what science is about, right? - some other things there's some leeway. You know. Markets. Or... sports. Things people do.'
'Not following you.'
'Some people gain influence over others through these things, right? Politics, you know. Or... singing, art, writing. You and I and some others, we're slightly luckier. We get - well, I got, and you just got - given some keys to influence people. I mean, consider how many thoughts a person has in a lifetime, or even in a day, right? How much energy and force goes into those thoughts? But of course people rarely ever act on them all the time. But we can use that energy, a bit of it at least. You're at the bottom rung. But there you are. You can see some thoughts, and nudge them around a little. With some discipline, you can do more things.'
'Like what?'
'I'm here to tell you what's gone on, not tell you what you're going to do,' she says, sitting up again.
