    We are LIVE, everybody!

For those of you not in the know, this is FIST OF SHADOW QUEST, a martial arts/magical assassin quest to find your master in a strange world you know nothing about. You are Shun, apprentice of Sifu Tong, master of the ancient art of assassination – The Fist of Shadow. It’s a style that emphasizes quick, focused movements to quickly eliminate an enemy and use his force against him.

The old threads are here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Fist%20of%20Shadow
It’s getting a little longer, but it shouldn’t take too long to read if you’re interested!

Last time, we went full TOURNAMENT ARC and progressed to the final round, beating a juggernaut of a guard, an asshole wizard, and a strange alchemist girl who dual wielded greatswords. After a long and intense battle, we barely lost to our rival, Khan, since he apparently has the resilience of a freight train. Despite losing, High Master Richards has still asked us to join him and Khan for dinner at his home.
UPDATED! Here’s a list of techniques that you know and can learn later on: http://pastebin.com/8VHvnub0
Feel free to reference it whenever.
Inventory: 5 wooden shurikens, 1 dose of Heaven Berries, 385 gp (9914 in the bank), a pendant of Ward Fear, 1 emerald gem, two medical kits, about ten feet of rope, 3 healing potions, a watch, and a compass, 5 masterwork throwing daggers, belt of GO FAST (+1 to attack and defense).

SPECIAL NOTE: I do have to work tonight, so there will be a break at some point in the quest, which I will resume when I come home. Fortunately, we close early tonight, so I won’t be too long.

You sit in your spartan waiting room, thinking. What business does High Master Richards have with you? Did he enjoy your performance with Khan? Does he just do this for some runner ups? Or… you don’t want to think about it, but your mind wanders anyway. What if it has to do with your powers? What if he’s delivering you to Master Richards? It makes sense, but…. Well, you don’t seem to have a choice in the matter. A bald, grizzled head stick out from the doorway. “It’s time, Shun.” Time to face the music…

You follow Hank outside of the marble arena, into the dim blue light of the city night. Khan is waiting, fully healed and grinning at you. It would be reassuring… if he weren’t flanked by 4 men in obsidian armor, inky cloaks shrouding them. One of them nods at Hank, who retreats into the arena. Ignorant- or oblivious- to the mildly threatening men around him, Khan claps you on the shoulder.

“Shun, my friend! That was a most excellent battle, don’t you agree?” He laughs heartily. “It looks like our score is 1 to 1, is it not?” Well, maybe his boisterousness is a little reassuring…

"It was a great test of our skills and abilities. We'll have to do it again sometime."

"How are you doing my friend? I see that your travels have been useful to you. You are much more powerful than you were the last time."

"They want us to meet Master Richards. You know what this is about?"

    Bitter? Frustrated?

A real martial artist shouldn't feel bad about losing. It can be a learning experience like none other and should be treasured.

Speaking of which, are we going to "level up" after this tournament? Even if we lost the whole thing, we still won against powerful fores.

This was our FIRST real loss.
Shun doesn't know what it's like to lose. After a match that close, he'd probably feel impotent and frustrated, like "Why couldn't I finish it? Why couldn't I beat him?"
Watch how Ippo acted after his first ever loss (against the champion Eiji Date) in Hajime no Ippo. Ippo tried to play it off, but he realized it was aggravating as hell.

Yes, he'll understand it as a learning experience later, but for now, I'd say Shun is peeved that after a match as close as that, he couldn't finish.

    What?
Shun had failures before this one. I haven't watched Hakime Ippo but I do not think that the protagonist of that manga/anime was raised for 12 years being tutored by a grandmaster martial artist. Pretty sure that the philosophy of martial arts is so ingrained in Shun's mind that a near loss against stronger foe like this wouldn't bother him. Especially when he won the last time.

I'd imagine Shun real frustration would be that he felt the tournament was a waste of time and effort. He didn't get the money he needed for the fee, so now we hafta go back and do more bounty hunting.

It's still his first official loss in any major capacity. Every other encounter before this point was a fight for survival. If we failed at those, WE'D BE DEAD.
Ippo's one and only loss was his first bid for the Japanese featherweight title in professional boxing. He got destroyed, and it aggravated him after a while when the weight of it finally settled in. He got over it and became inspired and stronger overall, but not at first.
It was a match as close as that will all the marbles on the line, I should emphasize. Shun will eventually appreciate that even though he lost, two things happened:
    1. He lost to Khan of all people.
    2. He, at the very least, made Khan WORK for that victory.
    >> Martial Arts Artist 05/07/12(Mon)13:07 No.19012308
    >>19012256
I'd say losing the prize itself isn't the main motivator, but yeah, coming as close as he did only to lose it all to an ox like Khan probably wouldn't sit well at first.

So I'd say, we work on those sapping and weakining strikes, for battle. I imagine they would be the best bet for fighting Khan. Also we may want to learn a way to snuff out fire. We can start with candles, then small cooking fires, larger flames, etc etc

"Something like that. Losing is...rather bitter, now that I've tasted it. I don't see how you can remain so jovial when I beat you the first time. And now, after a bout so close as that first one, I feel frustrated.”

Khan chuckles at your disappointment. “My friend, experience is the greatest teacher, the greatest motivator! Even in failure, we find a way to keep going, stronger than before, constantly pushing ourselves to greater heights.” You nod as the two of you start walking, following the dark guards. Logically, Khan makes sense. Your frustration stops you from really letting it sink in. It’s something you’ll have to think about later.

You decide to change the subject. "What have you been doing all this time?"

He laughs, robust chest heaving up and down. “Not much! I headed here as quickly as I could when I heard about the tournament. I composed a few songs on my way, but you’ll never believe what I found!” You curiously raise your eyebrow. “I stumbled across a cave, and I adventurously investigated. When I went in deep enough, I found an old village and this cloak on a skeleton, surrounded by over a hundred bodies! I thought, ‘what a twist of fate!’ and I took it!” You don’t have as much experience wandering as Khan, but isn’t it a bad idea to just take the clothes off of dead bodies like that? “When I tried it on, I could see why the man I took it from killed so many people- I feel… resilient! Almost invincible! I call it the Cloak of the Lord!” Khan, it’s just a cloak, it doesn’t need a name. “So, naturally, I composed a poem about it!”

“Oh well. Anyway, now I feel a little more assured that your fantastic stamina didn't just appear out of nowhere. Well, technically it did, but you get my point. Sooner or later, we'll have to have a proper bout. No enchanted gear, no armor." You and Khan have grins spreading across your faces. “THEN we'll see who is really stronger."

Khan sticks out his fist at you, which you bump in return. “Of course, my rival! May we feud until time herself ends! I noticed that you’ve learned a few new tricks since we last met!” You grin and nod.

"What about you? Did you learn anything new during your travels?”

He laughs. “Only the teleportation, I’m afraid. I didn’t have enough time to show you more of my moves in our previous fight!” Oh goodness, you’re a little glad for that.

“So what did you think of the music that the bard was playing during our bout?” What? Khan, we were fighting, who has time to listen to music when someone’s trying to bash your face in?

Khan already had inhuman stamina before he found this godly cloak in the middle of nowhere. Shun isn't famed for his stamina so much as his precision and inventiveness. Even with our endurance potion, it didn't change that Khan still hits like a semi truck.

Khan has raw strength and stamina to barrel through everything in his way.
Shun prefers being clever and precise and getting things right the first time.

You and Khan stand in front of the intimidating tower, a great obsidian door the only way in. Opening the door, you step inside.

You’re not sure what you expected from High Master Blaine’s tower. Skeletons hanging from the wall? The screams of tormented victims? The metallic stench of blood and flesh? Horrific abominations ready to eat you? Instead… it’s just a platform with a chain heading up for a long, long time. No paintings, no experimentation, no receptionists, just… the platform. One of the guards, in a deadpan voice, asks you to get on the elevator. He pulls a level when you and Khan are on it, and the chain contracts, pulling you up.

You turn to Khan, breaking the silence. "The ferry rate was hiked because one of the ships they used was wrecked, right? Maybe if you're any good with a hammer like you are with an instrument, you could help get that boat fixed so the price comes down. Then lots more people could travel with you across the Starry Seas."

A sparkle enters Khan’s green eyes. “A fantastic idea! Surely, with my work ethic, we could build a fleet of ships to travel the world!” Once again, you shake your head as Khan gets carried away. The elevator ascends, and the black walls of the tower blend into a mass of darkness, chains clinking as you travel. A minute later, you clear the hole at the top of the ascent. The room you’re in is deceptively simple for the leader of such an opulent city. There’s a red velvet couch on one side of the room, a tall bookcase next to it, with a small table in front of it. On the other side is a set of stairs heading upwards. An ebony dining table and three charmingly wooden cushioned chairs is nearby. And in one of the chairs… sitting dignified is him. High Master Blaine.

He looks the same as ever, clad in his armor and cloak, his oppressive metal mask still on. His scholarly, yet commanding voice calls out to you.

    “Greetings.”

To your surprise, Khan bows down next to you, politely saying, “Good evening, High Master Blaine. It is an honor to meet you.” Maybe the buffoon does have a bit of tact.

You bow, following suit. "It is a pleasure to finally meet you, High Master Blaine."He waves his arm to the chairs opposite him, and you both take your seats. It’s even more comfortable than the chairs over at the Golden Dragon. A shame the atmosphere is far more… intimidating. “To what do we have this occasion?"

The mask glares at you. “Every year, gentlemen, the winner of the Gold Tournament is honored with dinner at the abode of the High Master. It is a tradition from before my reign, one that I do not see in doing away with.” That doesn’t explain why you’re here. “But I do not wish to be anything less than a gracious host. Is there anything I can get you to drink? Tea, coffee, water, wine, even?” Next to you, you feel Khan squirm a bit at the mention of alcohol. “Our beverage reserves are vast. You’ll stick with the classics, thank you very much. “Hot tea, please.” He nods. Khan’s surprisingly reserved voice next to you asks for coffee. Even his beverage preference is unrefined. Nodding, High Master Blaine waves a hand, sparkling with magical energy, and your drinks appear in front of you. You and Khan are a little taken aback. Glancing around, you notice that nothing else in the room is changed, so that rules out alchemy as the cause. Interesting.

His calm voice says, “So, gentlemen, I take it that you are travelers, given your garb. How do you feel about Terec?” You’re tense, very tense. Did he invite you here to make small talk?

Is he trying to revolutionize magic and technology? "Are you trying to make a new field of science? I can clearly see how much good can be gained from combining arcane and machines.” You sup the sweet tea, “I thought that was just common sense. It'd be better if I could've gotten the armor itself enchanted, but...you know."”

High Master Blaine dryly says, “Saying that I am trying would be incorrect. I have succeeded. While you may have added enchanted clothes to your armor, I have taken the next step and combined not only the arcane and technology, I also create my leather with alchemical secrets. For example, my gloves.” To demonstrate, he lifts his arm up, showing his leathery hands. “Leather, tanned and boiled in the blood of the glass scorpions of the Gateway to Hell. Underneath, interlocking scales allow me comfort and resilience. Over that, a number of enchantments. As a result, these gloves are invulnerable, can handle any toxic materials, and allow me to channel magic more easily than all but the most experienced of mages.” Wow…. WOW. That’s utterly brilliant.

“I see the research is going well.”

“Splendedly.” Blaine notices that Khan has been silently drinking his coffee. Snapping his fingers, a man with a trim beard and a funny hat descends from the stairs. “I suppose it is time to eat, is it not? What would you gentlemen prefer? Exquisite and nutritious, as well.” You nod and ask for that. “Thank you, Earl.” He turns back to the two of you. “I hope you do not mind that I won’t be eating. Acquiring wealth through your merits is a fine path to walk, especially if the end flies in the face of the gods.” Well, this just got weird. Anyone who wanted him dead would have known that he is a master in combat, and can never be ambushed.” He props his dark hand under that horrible rusty mask of his, lost in thought. “No, they would have done so to find him, under the guise of an assassination. Bring him out of hiding. Hm.” His head comes back up. “Do you have any leads?”

Wait a second. “Why is that convenient?”

“I summoned you to speak about Master Richards. I have reason to believe that he is conducting illicit experiments in his tower, human experiments.” Doesn’t everything get tested on humans, though? You voice your question. “Experimentation is done with animals, and when we are sure that it is safe, we move on to testing with humans. Richards, on the other hand, skips the animal phase. I cannot allow that. I also believe that he is attempting to undermine my authority my leaking these experiments to the public in an attempt to incite a revolt, an unneeded one.” He pauses for a second, and the only sound in the room is Khan’s chewing. “I want you to kill him, heir to the Fist of Shadow.”

After all, a master assassin has fallen into my lap, one with no ties to me or anyone here. No greetings, no goodbyes. Nothing.” That’s even more creepy than the man in front of you. “If that is all, then please leave your armor with one of my guard at the bottom floor, child of shadow. As for you, Khan, I wish you the best of luck in your travels, and may I say that your victory was well earned.” Black tattered cloak trailing behind him, the mysterious man heads upstairs, off to do mysterious things in his mysterious tower.

The elevator ride down is mostly silent until Khan breaks it. “Did he terrify you, too?”

"Well, uh, don't let me keep you, then. I'll be seeing you around." Stepping off the elevator, you take off your armor and give it to a guard and swap back into your old gi. Khan, just about to leave, stops when he hears you. “By the way, for making more money here, for you I'd suggest bodyguarding or something like that rather than bounty hunting. You're a good friend and rival, but you have no subtlety at all and most of the targets would know you were coming and go to ground.”

He nods and grins widely. “Thank you my friend! I’ll see you soon!” Waving, he heads into the dead of night.

You follow shortly afterwards and check the time. It’s one in the morning. You had hoped to look for Erin, but damn, it’s late. You look into the sky, contemplating the stars when something very, very strange catches your eye. A dark, pale orb lies in the sky ominously. You’d ask yourself if you’ve seen that before, but you already know that you haven’t. You don’t like the look of it. Not at all.

Rushing to the edge of the roof, you quickly swing over and latch onto the wall, trying to cover yourself in shadow, but unable to do so while climbing. You just can’t manipulate it multiple ways like that. Dammit! Yells come from below you. Sweat streams down your face as bolt after bolt lands in the walls around you. One hit and you’re done for…

But you keep going and look into your room. Two guards are there. Shit. They look out at the commotion outside and see your shadow streaking into the room, grabbing your back and hoisting it outside. You grab it with one hand and hoist it up on your arm. Beneath you, more guards show up while others reload their crossbows. Shouts come from above you.

In a haze, you realize that it would be a good idea to climb the guards. Brute-forcing them wouldn’t work here, not now.

Shadows around you dispersing, you grab the nearest guard and heave yourself over the crowd. The alley’s not too far away now… running over the guards, you’re stopped dead when a blade slices into your side. Fuck… it went in deep. You felt it cut… half of your intestines and bisect a kidney. Fuck. A cold hand grabs your slowing leg and slams you into the ground as you black out from the pain and gas.

    Fuck.

You awaken to the taste of a bitter liquid being poured down your throat. Groggily, you cough, your torso in pain as you feel it stitch itself back together.

A voice… you’re in too much pain to make it out… speaks, “Ah, so you’re awake.” You blink. Blackness. Slowly, your vision returns, blurry. The room you’re in is brightly lit. Extremely bright. That’s the first thing you notice. The second thing you notice is that you’re laying down on a cold table. The third is that your arms and legs are being held down by cold, unyielding steel. The fourth is that it’s extremely hard to move even your head, which is completely unhindered. You blink as light continues to fill your vision and things come into focus. Moving your head, you check out the room. There’s various tables with strange, pointy instruments on them. A man in a white coat turn to you. Other white forms are stationed around the room. “I thought we’d almost lost you there, Shun.”

You blink, as everything clears up. The smiling face of Victor Richards looks down on your contained body.

Brightly lit or not, there are shadows. Shadows everywhere. The table has a shadow, the people around us have shadows, Victor has a shadow.
Time to put our skills to use, time to develop something new. This is a life or death situation, a moment where legends are separated from mere men. Would Sifu be held by this? Hell No! Would Khan be held by this? Again, fuck no!
Call out to them, to the shadows, they are lonely in this bright room, they need a link, a guidance. Connect to them and turn your opponents shadows against them, for they do not care about them, they take them for granted and forget them. Make them remember the thing that always follows them.

You look around. There are 5 guards in here, each armed to the teeth and standing at least seven feet tall. One wall has a cabinet with a large number of colored vials in it. Potions, perhaps? Reagents? “Hey, Victor, can I call you Vic?” He chuckles at how nonchalant you are. "Could have just asked me to come, you know. So then. Are you going to torture me? Experiment on me?” You pause. “Thanks for patching me up. Not very smart of me to go running on their heads like that. Must have been something I ate. Or breathed in."

There’s… a lot of tools in here. A few magical runes, maybe? You’re not really versed enough to say. You thought it was just the gash in your side that gave you a headache, but it’s definitely this room. Richards chuckles. “Yes, that was my doing. I wish I didn’t have to be so direct, but sometimes such measures need to be taken, don’t you think?” Well, it’s what you’d do in his situation, you suppose.

"So, I guess we should get to the point. You want my master dead for killing family, am I right? Figure you can draw him out by getting me. I’ll tell you something Dick: My master isn't here, your goons saw to that."

He blinks at you while he idly plays with his needles. “What on earth are you talking about, boy?”
